[0021] Various aspects are now described with reference to the drawings. In the following description, for purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of one or more aspects. It may be evident, however, that such aspect (s) may be practiced without these specific details.

[0022] The described features generally relate to user-equipment (UE) -initiated beam reporting. In wireless communication technologies, such as fifth generation (5G) new radio (NR) or other wireless communication technologies, UEs can communicate with network nodes (e.g., a base station, gNB, etc. ) using a transmit and / or receive beam by which to use antenna resources to generate a beam in a spatial direction for communicating with the network nodes. In an example, a UE can perform UE-initiated beam reporting by transmitting a beam report to a network node under certain conditions or based on detecting certain events. This can cause the network node to configure a different beam for the UE to use in communicating with the network node. For example, the UE can measure signals that are transmitted by the network node using one or more transmit beams (e.g., in one or more spatial directions) . For example, the UE can use one or more different receive beams (e.g., in one or more spatial directions) to receive and measure the transmit beams at the UE. The UE can transmit the beam report to the network node to indicate measurements of the transmit beams, an identification of the transmit beam (s) being reported, and / or an identification of the receive beam (s) used to measure the transmit beams.

[0023] In 5G NR, for example, enhancements can be provided to facilitate UE-initiated beam reporting (also referred to herein as UE-initiated beam management, event-driven beam reporting, or event-driven beam management) for reducing overhead and / or latency. For example, UE-initiated beam reporting can be performed assuming unified transmission configuration indicator (TCI) states between the UE and network node while leveraging legacy channel state information (CSI) measurement and reporting configuration frameworks. This can be useful for frequency range 2 (FR2) and / or single transmission / reception point (sTRP) with intra-cell and / or inter-cell beam management  in 5G NR. Aspects described herein relate to uplink (UL) signaling content (s) (and / or procedure (s) ) for UE-initiated / event-driven beam reporting facilitating fast beam switching and / or UL signaling medium / container considering the UE-initiated / event-driven nature of the UL transmission, designed for beam reporting.

[0024] In 5G NR, beam report transmission procedure for UE-initiated / event-driven beam reporting can support one or more modes. One example of a mode includes Mode A (dynamically scheduling uplink control information (UCI) by gNB) . In Mode A, for example, the UE can transmit a first physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) (e.g., as one bit or multiple bits) to request a resource for a second UL channel to carry beam report, where the request format may include scheduling request (SR) , a new UCI type, etc. The UE can then detect the downlink control information (DCI) format to indicate a resource for a second UL channel to carry beam report. The UE can then transmit the beam report in second UL channel. In an example, the second UL channel may include PUCCH, physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) , a combination thereof, etc. In an example, this Mode A can be supported by UEs (e.g., as a default configuration) supporting UE-initiated / event-driven beam reporting. Mode A may not use a new DCI format. Another example mode includes Mode B (UCI in configured resource (s) for second UL channel. In Mode B, the UE can transmit a first PUCCH (e.g., as one bit or multiple bits) notifying a second UL channel to carry beam report. For example, the notification format can include SR, a new UCI type, etc. The UE can transmit the beam report in the second UL channel. In an example, the second UL channel can include PUCCH, PUSCH, a combination thereof, etc. For example, the notification in the first PUCCH can be a separate reporting instance from the beam report. For Mode A or B, in an example, the UE may receive acknowledgement information with each response. In addition, for Mode A or Mode B, for example, cross-component carrier (CC) beam reporting can be supported.

[0025] In an example, a UE can perform UE-initiated beam reporting based on detecting occurrence of certain events (e.g., triggering event determination) , such as Event 2, which can be detected based on a new beam having an associated signal measurement (e.g., layer 1 (L1) -reference signal received power (RSRP) ) that is greater than a signal measurement of a current beam by at least a threshold value. For example, if within a time window (which may be configurable) , the number of Event 2 instance (s) for at least one same new beam is greater than or equal to a configurable number M, the  UE can perform UE-initiated beam reporting. This may be based on a UE capability for detecting Event 2 and / or performing the UE-initiated beam reporting. In one example, M can be equal to one (or the UE can have a basic feature) such that once the L1-RSRP of the new beam becomes a threshold value better than the current beam, the UE can perform the UE-initiated beam reporting.

[0026] In an example, other events for UE-initiated / event-driven beam reporting (in addition or alternatively to Event 2) can be supported, such as Event 1 where the quality (e.g., L1-RSRP) of the current beam is worse than a certain threshold, or Event 7 where the quality (e.g., L1-RSRP) of at least one new beam becomes a threshold value better than the RS derived from the activated TCI state with the M-th best quality. For Event 7, in an example, M can be configured using RRC signaling from the network node to the UE and / or may be subjective to UE capability signaling. In addition, in an example, the UE may only indicate a single candidate value or not support Event 7.

[0027] Aspects described herein relate to configuring resource setting (e.g., the measurement resources) and / or the report setting (e.g., the reporting resources) to use for detecting and / or performing UE-initiated beam reporting for Event 1. In an example, the network node can configure the UE with a measurement resource set indicating one or more resources to use for measuring one or more reference signals associated with one or more beams, which may include the current beam. In another example, the UE can measure a reference signal associated with the current beam. The UE can measure the current beam and perform UE-initiated beam reporting based on detecting Event 1 (e.g., based on a measurement value of the reference signal associated with the current beam being less than a threshold for Event 1) . Based on detecting Event 1, for example, the UE can perform UE-initiated beam reporting to report the occurrence of Event 1, the measurement value of the reference signal associated with the current beam, one or more measurement values of other reference signals associated with other beams, etc. Based on the UE-initiated beam report, the network node can configure the UE with a different beam to use in communicating with the network node.

[0028] In accordance with aspects described herein, UE-initiated beam reporting can be improved by supporting additional events for cause beam reporting, such as Event 1 when the current beam (or the associated reference signal) has a received power or quality below a certain threshold. Reporting this event can enable the network node to configure a new beam for the UE to use in communicating with the network node (e.g., a new beam  for receiving communications from and / or transmitting communications to the network node) . This can improve wireless communications with the current network node while mitigating loss of connection or without requiring handover, which can result in more seamless wireless communications between the UE and the network node. This can improve performance and / or throughput of the UE, which can improve user experience when using the UE.

[0029] The described features will be presented in more detail below with reference to FIGS. 1-8.

[0046] Deployment of communication systems, such as 5G new radio (NR) systems, may be arranged in multiple manners with various components or constituent parts. In a 5G NR system, or network, a network node, a network entity, a mobility element of a network, a radio access network (RAN) node, a core network node, a network element,  or a network equipment, such as a base station (BS, e.g., BS 102) , or one or more units (or one or more components) performing base station functionality, may be implemented in an aggregated or disaggregated architecture. For example, a BS (such as a Node B (NB) , evolved NB (eNB) , NR BS, 5G NB, access point (AP) , a transmit receive point (TRP) , or a cell, etc. ) may be implemented as an aggregated base station (also known as a standalone BS or a monolithic BS) or a disaggregated base station.

[0047] An aggregated base station may be configured to utilize a radio protocol stack that is physically or logically integrated within a single RAN node. A disaggregated base station may be configured to utilize a protocol stack that is physically or logically distributed among two or more units (such as one or more central or centralized units (CUs) , one or more distributed units (DUs) , or one or more radio units (RUs) ) . In some aspects, a CU may be implemented within a RAN node, and one or more DUs may be co-located with the CU, or alternatively, may be geographically or virtually distributed throughout one or multiple other RAN nodes. The DUs may be implemented to communicate with one or more RUs. Each of the CU, DU and RU also can be implemented as virtual units, i.e., a virtual central unit (VCU) , a virtual distributed unit (VDU) , or a virtual radio unit (VRU) .

[0048] Base station-type operation or network design may consider aggregation characteristics of base station functionality. For example, disaggregated base stations may be utilized in an integrated access backhaul (IAB) network, an open radio access network (O-RAN (such as the network configuration sponsored by the O-RAN Alliance) ) , or a virtualized radio access network (vRAN, also known as a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) ) . Disaggregation may include distributing functionality across two or more units at various physical locations, as well as distributing functionality for at least one unit virtually, which can enable flexibility in network design. The various units of the disaggregated base station, or disaggregated RAN architecture, can be configured for wired or wireless communication with at least one other unit.

[0049] In an example, UE communicating component 342 of a UE 104 can measure one or more reference signals associated with one or more beams, including a current beam configured for communicating with a network node (e.g., base station 102, gNB 180, etc. ) , and can detect an event related to the current beam. For example, the event can correspond to Event 1 where the signal strength or quality of a reference signal transmitted using the current beam does not meet a threshold. Based at least on detecting  such an event, UE communicating component 342 can perform a UE-initiated transmission of a beam report to the network node. In an example, BS communicating component 442 can receive a UE-initiated beam report from a UE 104, which may be based on Event 1, and can configure a new beam for the UE 104 and / or base station 102 / gNB 180 to use in communicating with one another.

[0050] FIG. 2 shows a diagram illustrating an example of disaggregated base station 200 architecture. The disaggregated base station 200 architecture may include one or more central units (CUs) 210 that can communicate directly with a core network 220 via a backhaul link, or indirectly with the core network 220 through one or more disaggregated base station units (such as a Near-Real Time (Near-RT) RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) 225 via an E2 link, or a Non-Real Time (Non-RT) RIC 215 associated with a Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) Framework 205, or both) . A CU 210 may communicate with one or more distributed units (DUs) 230 via respective midhaul links, such as an F1 interface. The DUs 230 may communicate with one or more radio units (RUs) 240 via respective fronthaul links. The RUs 240 may communicate with respective UEs 104 via one or more radio frequency (RF) access links. In some implementations, the UE 104 may be simultaneously served by multiple RUs 240.

[0051] Each of the units, e.g., the CUs 210, the DUs 230, the RUs 240, as well as the Near-RT RICs 225, the Non-RT RICs 215 and the SMO Framework 205, may include one or more interfaces or be coupled to one or more interfaces configured to receive or transmit signals, data, or information (collectively, signals) via a wired or wireless transmission medium. Each of the units, or an associated processor or controller providing instructions to the communication interfaces of the units, can be configured to communicate with one or more of the other units via the transmission medium. For example, the units can include a wired interface configured to receive or transmit signals over a wired transmission medium to one or more of the other units. Additionally, the units can include a wireless interface, which may include a receiver, a transmitter or transceiver (such as a radio frequency (RF) transceiver) , configured to receive or transmit signals, or both, over a wireless transmission medium to one or more of the other units.

[0052] In some aspects, the CU 210 may host one or more higher layer control functions. Such control functions can include radio resource control (RRC) , packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) , service data adaptation protocol (SDAP) , or the like. Each control function can be implemented with an interface configured to communicate signals  with other control functions hosted by the CU 210. The CU 210 may be configured to handle user plane functionality (i.e., Central Unit –User Plane (CU-UP) ) , control plane functionality (i.e., Central Unit –Control Plane (CU-CP) ) , or a combination thereof. In some implementations, the CU 210 can be logically split into one or more CU-UP units and one or more CU-CP units. The CU-UP unit can communicate bidirectionally with the CU-CP unit via an interface, such as the E1 interface when implemented in an O-RAN configuration. The CU 210 can be implemented to communicate with the DU 230, as necessary, for network control and signaling.

[0053] The DU 230 may correspond to a logical unit that includes one or more base station functions to control the operation of one or more RUs 240. In some aspects, the DU 230 may host one or more of a radio link control (RLC) layer, a medium access control (MAC) layer, and one or more high physical (PHY) layers (such as modules for forward error correction (FEC) encoding and decoding, scrambling, modulation and demodulation, or the like) depending, at least in part, on a functional split, such as those defined by the third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) . In some aspects, the DU 230 may further host one or more low PHY layers. Each layer (or module) can be implemented with an interface configured to communicate signals with other layers (and modules) hosted by the DU 230, or with the control functions hosted by the CU 210.

[0054] Lower-layer functionality can be implemented by one or more RUs 240. In some deployments, an RU 240, controlled by a DU 230, may correspond to a logical node that hosts RF processing functions, or low-PHY layer functions (such as performing fast Fourier transform (FFT) , inverse FFT (iFFT) , digital beamforming, physical random access channel (PRACH) extraction and filtering, or the like) , or both, based at least in part on the functional split, such as a lower layer functional split. In such an architecture, the RU (s) 240 can be implemented to handle over the air (OTA) communication with one or more UEs 104. In some implementations, real-time and non-real-time aspects of control and user plane communication with the RU (s) 240 can be controlled by the corresponding DU 230. In some scenarios, this configuration can enable the DU (s) 230 and the CU 210 to be implemented in a cloud-based RAN architecture, such as a vRAN architecture.

[0055] The SMO Framework 205 may be configured to support RAN deployment and provisioning of non-virtualized and virtualized network elements. For non-virtualized network elements, the SMO Framework 205 may be configured to support the  deployment of dedicated physical resources for RAN coverage requirements which may be managed via an operations and maintenance interface (such as an O1 interface) . For virtualized network elements, the SMO Framework 205 may be configured to interact with a cloud computing platform (such as an open cloud (O-Cloud) 290) to perform network element life cycle management (such as to instantiate virtualized network elements) via a cloud computing platform interface (such as an O2 interface) . Such virtualized network elements can include, but are not limited to, CUs 210, DUs 230, RUs 240 and Near-RT RICs 225. In some implementations, the SMO Framework 205 can communicate with a hardware aspect of a 4G RAN, such as an open eNB (O-eNB) 211, via an O1 interface. Additionally, in some implementations, the SMO Framework 205 can communicate directly with one or more RUs 240 via an O1 interface. The SMO Framework 205 also may include a Non-RT RIC 215 configured to support functionality of the SMO Framework 205.

[0056] The Non-RT RIC 215 may be configured to include a logical function that enables non-real-time control and optimization of RAN elements and resources, Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI / ML) workflows including model training and updates, or policy-based guidance of applications / features in the Near-RT RIC 225. The Non-RT RIC 215 may be coupled to or communicate with (such as via an A1 interface) the Near-RT RIC 225. The Near-RT RIC 225 may be configured to include a logical function that enables near-real-time control and optimization of RAN elements and resources via data collection and actions over an interface (such as via an E2 interface) connecting one or more CUs 210, one or more DUs 230, or both, as well as an O-eNB, with the Near-RT RIC 225.

[0057] In some implementations, to generate AI / ML models to be deployed in the Near-RT RIC 225, the Non-RT RIC 215 may receive parameters or external enrichment information from external servers. Such information may be utilized by the Near-RT RIC 225 and may be received at the SMO Framework 205 or the Non-RT RIC 215 from non-network data sources or from network functions. In some examples, the Non-RT RIC 215 or the Near-RT RIC 225 may be configured to tune RAN behavior or performance. For example, the Non-RT RIC 215 may monitor long-term trends and patterns for performance and employ AI / ML models to perform corrective actions through the SMO Framework 205 (such as reconfiguration via O1) or via creation of RAN management policies (such as A1 policies) .

[0058] Turning now to FIGS. 3-8, aspects are depicted with reference to one or more components and one or more methods that may perform the actions or operations described herein, where aspects in dashed line may be optional. Although the operations described below in FIGS. 5 and 6 are presented in a particular order and / or as being performed by an example component, it should be understood that the ordering of the actions and the components performing the actions may be varied, depending on the implementation. Moreover, it should be understood that the following actions, functions, and / or described components may be performed by a specially programmed processor, a processor executing specially programmed software or computer-readable media, or by any other combination of a hardware component and / or a software component capable of performing the described actions or functions.

[0059] Referring to FIG. 3, one example of an implementation of UE 104 may include a variety of components, some of which have already been described above and are described further herein, including components such as one or more processors 312 and one or more memories 316 and one or more transceivers 302 in communication via one or more buses 344. For example, the one or more processors 312 can include a single processor or multiple processors configured to perform one or more functions described herein. For example, the multiple processors can be configured to perform a certain subset of a set of functions described herein, such that the multiple processors together can perform the set of functions. Similarly, for example, the one or more memories 316 can include a single memory device or multiple memory devices configured to store instructions or parameters for performing one or more functions described herein. For example, the multiple memory devices can be configured to store the instructions or parameters for performing a certain subset of a set of functions described herein, such that the multiple memory devices together can store the instructions or parameters for the set of functions. The one or more processors 312, one or more memories 316, and one or more transceivers 302 may operate in conjunction with modem 340 and / or UE communicating component 342 for performing UE-initiated transmission of a beam report based on detecting an event, in accordance with aspects described herein.

[0072] The transceiver 402, receiver 406, transmitter 408, one or more processors 412, memory / memories 416, applications 475, buses 444, RF front end 488, LNAs 490, switches 492, filters 496, PAs 498, and one or more antennas 465 may be the same as or similar to the corresponding components of UE 104, as described above, but configured or otherwise programmed for base station operations as opposed to UE operations.

[0073] In an aspect, BS communicating component 442 can optionally include a configuring component 452 for generating and / or transmitting one or more configurations for a UE 104, such as a measurement resource configuration, a beam reporting configuration, etc., and / or a report processing component 454 for processing a UE-initiated beam report received from a UE, in accordance with aspects described herein.

[0074] In an aspect, the processor (s) 412 may correspond to one or more of the processors described in connection with the base station in FIG. 8. Similarly, the memory / memories 416 may correspond to the one or more memories described in connection with the base station in FIG. 8.

[0075] FIG. 5 illustrates a flow chart of an example of a method 500 for transmitting a UE-initiated beam report, in accordance with aspects described herein. In an example, a UE 104 can perform the functions described in method 500 shown in FIG. 5 using one or more of the components described in FIGS. 1 and / or 3.

[0076] In method 500, at Block 502, a signal measurement of a reference signal corresponding to a current beam configured for communicating with a network node can be obtained. In an aspect, signal measuring component 354, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 312, memory / memories 316, transceiver 302, UE communicating component 342, etc., can obtain the signal measurement of the reference signal corresponding to the current beam configured for communicating with the network node. For example, the UE 104 can communicate with the network node using a current beam.  The signal measuring component 354 can determine resources over which a reference signal representative of the current beam (e.g., the current transmit beam as used by the network node to transmit communications to the UE) is transmitted by the network node. For example, the signal measurement can include one or more of a RSRP (e.g., L1-RSRP) , RSRQ, RSSI, SNR, etc. performed on the reference signal as received. In one example, the UE 104 can receive the reference signal using the current receive beam configured at the UE 104. In an example, signal measuring component 354 can perform the signal measurement periodically, aperiodically, based on configured measurement resources, and / or the like.

[0077] In one example, signal measuring component 354 can measure a reference signal over an implicit resource known to be transmitted using (or quasi-colocated (QCLed) with) the current beam, such as a channel state information (CSI) -reference signal (RS) , a synchronization signal block (SSB) , etc. transmitted by the network node. In one example, signal measuring component 354 can use an implicit beam failure detection (BFD) RS rule defined in 5G NR used for measuring RSs to potentially detect beam failure. In an example, signal measuring component 354 can measure the CSI-RS, SSB, etc. based on not receiving a separate measurement resource configuration, as described further herein. For example, signal measuring component 354 can determine resources associated with the network node transmitting CSI-RS, SSB, etc., which can be based on one or more configurations received from the network node. In this example, signal measuring component 354 can measure the CSI-RS, SSB, etc., to obtain the signal measurement.

[0078] In method 500, optionally at Block 504, a measurement resource configuration can be received from the network node indicating a single resource that corresponds to the reference signal. In an aspect, configuration processing component 352, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 312, memory / memories 316, transceiver 302, UE communicating component 342, etc., can receive, from the network node, and / or process the measurement resource configuration indicating a single resource that corresponds to the reference signal. In an example, the measurement resource configuration may include a measurement resource set with only one resource indicated –the resource for the reference signal that corresponds to the current beam. For example, the reference signal can include a reference signal derived from the current TCI state configured for the UE 104. In addition, for example, receiving the measurement resource configuration can  include configuration processing component 352 receiving the measurement resource configuration in dynamic signaling, such as media access control (MAC) -control element (CE) or DCI signaling, updating the resource set as the current beam changes. In any case, for example, signal measuring component 354 can measure the reference signal corresponding to the current beam based on the resource indicated by the measurement resource set in the measurement resource configuration. For example, the measurement resource configuration may indicate the resource as a set of time or frequency resources (e.g., one or more subcarriers, resource elements, resource blocks, OFDM symbols, slots of multiple OFDM symbols, etc. ) over which the network node transmits the reference signal. In addition, in an example, the measurement resource configuration can indicate the resources as periodic resource over which the UE 104 can measure the reference signal, aperiodic resources, semi-persistently scheduled resources, etc.

[0079] In method 500, optionally at Block 506, a measurement resource configuration indicating multiple resources, including a resource that corresponds to the reference signal, can be obtained. In an aspect, configuration processing component 352, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 312, memory / memories 316, transceiver 302, UE communicating component 342, etc., can obtain the measurement resource configuration indicating the multiple resources, including the resource that corresponds to the reference signal. For example, the measurement resource set can include a set of multiple resources corresponding to multiple reference signals transmitted using different beams, which may include the current beam and / or one or more other beams that the network node may use to transmit communications to the UE 104.

[0080] In one example, in obtaining the measurement resource configuration at Block 506, optionally at Block 508, the measurement resource configuration can be derived based on one or more activated or configured TCI states. In an aspect, configuration processing component 352, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 312, memory / memories 316, transceiver 302, UE communicating component 342, etc., can derive the measurement resource configuration based on the one or more activated or configured TCI states. For example, configuration processing component 352 can receive, from the network node, first signaling indicating a set of configured TCI states that may be activated, second signaling indicating a portion of the set of configured TCI states to activate for communicating with the network node, and / or third signaling (e.g., dynamic signaling) indicating one TCI state of the set of activated TCI states to use in  communicating with the network node, as described above. In this example, configuration processing component 352 can implicitly derive the set of multiple resources for the multiple reference signals based on the activated TCI states if there are multiple activated TCI states, or based on the configured TCI states if there is only one activated TCI state.

[0081] In one example, in obtaining the measurement resource configuration at Block 506, optionally at Block 510, an RRC signal that indicates the measurement resource configuration can be received from the network node. In an aspect, configuration processing component 352, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 312, memory / memories 316, transceiver 302, UE communicating component 342, etc., can receive, from the network node, an RRC signal that indicates the measurement resource configuration. In this example, the measurement resource configuration received in RRC signaling can indicate a resource set of multiple resources to measure for obtaining measurements for a beam report.

[0082] In method 500, optionally at Block 512, the resource can be determined from the multiple resources as QCLed with the current beam. In an aspect, signal measuring component 354, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 312, memory / memories 316, transceiver 302, UE communicating component 342, etc., can determine the resource from the multiple resources as QCLed with the current beam. For example, signal measuring component 354 can determined which of the resources in the measurement resource configuration correspond to the current beam, which may be based on the TCI state associated with the resources and the TCI state of the current beam (e.g., based on a TCI state identifier in the measurement resource configuration) . In an example, signal measuring component 354 can measure only one resource within the resource set, where the one resource is the resource for the reference signal that is QCLed with the current beam, and the signal measuring component 354 may not measure other resources indicated in the resource set in the measurement resource configuration.

[0083] In method 500, at Block 514, based on the signal measurement being below a threshold, a UE-initiated transmission of a beam report to the network node can be performed. In an aspect, beam reporting component 356, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 312, memory / memories 316, transceiver 302, UE communicating component 342, etc., can, based on the signal measurement being below the threshold, perform the UE-initiated transmission of the beam report to the network node. For  example, the beam report may include an indication that Event 1 is detected (e.g., based on the signal measurement of the reference signal associated with the current beam being below threshold) . In another example, the beam report may include an indication of the signal measurement, such as a signal measurement value (e.g., the RSRP, RSRQ, RSSI, SNR, etc. of the reference signal) , as measured by the signal measuring component 354. As described above, beam reporting component 356 can transmit the UE-initiated beam report using Mode A (where the UE transmits a PUCCH to request a resource for transmitting the beam report) or Mode B (where the UE transmits the PUCCH notifying of the resource for transmitting the beam report) .

[0084] In method 500, optionally at Block 516, a beam reporting configuration indicating beam reporting resources over which to transmit the beam report for UE-initiated beamforming can be received from the network node. In an aspect, configuration processing component 352, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 312, memory / memories 316, transceiver 302, UE communicating component 342, etc., can receive, from the network node, and / or process the beam reporting configuration indicating beam reporting resources over which to transmit the beam report for UE-initiated beam reporting. For example, the beam reporting configuration can indicate the beam reporting resources based on a request from the UE 104 (e.g., in Mode A, as described above) . The beam reporting resources can indicate upcoming time or frequency resources for the UE 104 to use in transmitting a UE-initiated beam report, periodic resources that the UE 104 can use to transmit UE-initiated beam reports, aperiodic resource, semi-persistently scheduled resources, etc. In addition, in an example, configuration processing component 352 can transmit the beam reporting configuration in RRC signaling or dynamic signaling (e.g., MAC-CE or DCI) , etc.

[0085] In method 500, optionally at Block 518, an indication of a new beam to configure for communicating with the network node can be received from the network node and based on the beam report. In an aspect, configuration processing component 352, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 312, memory / memories 316, transceiver 302, UE communicating component 342, etc., can receive, from the network node, and / or process, and based on the beam report, the indication of the new beam to configure for communicating with the network node. For example, the new beam can be different from the current beam, and may be indicated in DCI, as an index to activated TCI states, etc.  In an example, configuration processing component 352 can activate the new beam for subsequent communications with the network node.

[0086] In one example, beam reporting component 356 can detect occurrence of the event (e.g., Event 1) for transmitting the UE-initiated beam report based on the signal measurement of the current beam and may report measurements of other beams in the beam report. In this regard, as described, signal measuring component 354 can measure other resources corresponding to other reference signals along with the resource corresponding to the reference signal associated with the current beam. In an example, in performing the UE-initiated transmission of the beam report at Block 514, optionally at Block 520, based on one of the other signal measurements of the other reference signals achieving the second threshold, the UE-initiated transmission of the beam report can be performed to indicate the one or more other signal measurements. In an aspect, beam reporting component 356, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 312, memory / memories 316, transceiver 302, UE communicating component 342, etc., can, based on one of the other signal measurements of the other reference signals achieving the second threshold, perform the UE-initiated transmission of the beam report to indicate the one or more other signal measurements. In this regard, for example, the beam report can include the other measurements as well. This can occur, for example, where the measurement resource configuration indicates multiple resources in the resource set. In this example, for event detection, signal measuring component 354 can measure only the resource within the resource set that is QCLed with the current beam for determining whether Event 1 is detected, and the beam reporting component 356 can report, in the UE-initiated beam report, the top-N number of beams measured in the resource set.

[0087] In another example, a resource setting can be shared for Event 1 and for other events, such as Event 2. For example, Event 1 may be configured in association with another Event 2. In this example, if there is no new beam better than the current beam (e.g., Event 2 not triggered) , but the current beam is worse than the threshold, Event 1 can be is triggered. Event 1 and Event 2 may share the same resource setting (e.g., the same set of resources configured in the measurement resource configuration) . In this example, beam reporting component 356 can use the current beam measurement (e.g., the reference signal in the resource set that is QCLed with the current beam) to detect Event 1, and / or can use all beam measurements (e.g., both current and new candidate beams) to detect Event 2. In this example, in method 500, optionally at Block 522, it can be determined  whether the signal measurement is below the threshold to detect the first event and whether one of other signal measurements of the other reference signals achieve a second threshold to detect a second event. In an aspect, beam reporting component 356, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 312, memory / memories 316, transceiver 302, UE communicating component 342, etc., can determine whether the signal measurement (e.g., of the reference signal corresponding to the current beam) is below the threshold to detect the first event (e.g., Event 1) and / or may determine whether one of other signal measurements of the other reference signals (e.g., corresponding to other beams) achieve the second threshold to detect the second event (e.g., Event 2) .

[0088] In an example, Event 1 and Event 2 can share the same reporting channel (as Event 1 and Event 2 may not be simultaneously triggered) . In one example, in the differential L1-RSRP reporting for Event 2, a specific value may be reserved for Event 1 indication, such that beam reporting component 356 can transmit the UE-initiated beam report for Event 2, but may indicate a value reserved for Event 1 indication. For example, if beam reporting component 356 indicates, in the beam report, the current beam CSI-RS resource indicator (CRI) or SSB resource indicator (SSBRI) as the strongest beam, then this may indicate Event 1 reporting. In another example, if beam reporting component 356 indicates, in the beam report, all reported L1-RSRP values as out-of-range or infinity, then this may indicate Event 1 reporting.

[0089] In another example, for a UE-initiated beam report transmitted based on beam reporting component 356 detecting Event 1, if UE 104 is configured to measure multiple reference signals in addition to the reference signal for the current beam, configuration processing component 352 can receive, from the network node, a flag (e.g., in RRC signaling in a CSI report configuration) indicating whether to include a report information for the current beam in beam reports. If enabled by the flag, beam reporting component 356 can report the beam metric for the current beam (without reporting the beam index for the current beam) . In this example, in transmitting the beam report, beam reporting component 356 can indicate the signal measurement for the current beam as one of an absolute value of the signal measurement (e.g., of beam report for current beam) , a differential value of the signal measurement (e.g., of beam report for current beam) to the strongest reported beam, or a differential value of the signal measurement (e.g., of beam report for current beam) to a configured threshold (e.g., the threshold for detecting Event 1) .

[0090] FIG. 6 illustrates a flow chart of an example of a method 600 for receiving and / or processing a UE-initiated beam report, in accordance with aspects described herein. In an example, a base station 102 or gNB 180, a monolithic base station or gNB, a portion of a disaggregated base station or gNB, a UE in sidelink communication, etc., can perform the functions described in method 600 shown in FIG. 6 using one or more of the components described in FIGS. 1 and / or 4.

[0091] In method 600, at Block 602, a UE-initiated transmission of a beam report can be received, from a UE, based on a signal measurement of a reference signal corresponding to a current beam configured for communicating with the network node being below a threshold. In an aspect, report processing component 454, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 412, memory / memories 416, transceiver 402, BS communicating component 442, etc., can receive, from the UE (e.g., UE 104) , the UE-initiated beam report based on the signal measurement of the reference signal corresponding to the current beam configured for communicating with the network node being below the threshold. For example, report processing component 454 can receive the beam report from the UE over resources (e.g., PUCCH resources, PUSCH resources, etc. ) granted to the UE (e.g., in Mode A) or resources indicated by the UE (e.g., in Mode B) . Moreover, as described above for example, the UE can transmit the UE-initiated beam report based at least on detecting Event 1, and the beam report may include at least a signal measurement of the current beam used in communicating with the network node. In some examples, as described above, the beam report may include signal measurements of other beams as well (e.g., where the UE-initiated beam report is also based on Event 2, where the beam report is over resources granted for Event 2 reporting, or otherwise) .

[0092] In method 600, at Block 604, an indication of a new beam to configure for communicating with the network node can be transmitted for the UE and based on the beam report. In an aspect, report processing component 454, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 412, memory / memories 416, transceiver 402, BS communicating component 442, etc., can transmit, for the UE (e.g., UE 104) and based on the beam report, the indication of the new beam to configure for communicating with the network node. For example, report processing component 454 can determine the new beam for the UE based on the report (e.g., based on a beam having a reported signal strength that achieves a threshold or has a higher value than the measurement of the current beam, based on selecting a beam other than the current beam, etc. ) . In any case, for example, report  processing component 454 can transmit the indication of the new beam to the UE, where the indication can be in a configuration or other signaling from the network node, a DCI indicating the new beam as an index of activated (or configured) TCI states, etc.

[0093] In method 600, optionally at Block 606, a beam reporting configuration indicating resources for performing the UE-initiated transmission of a beam report can be transmitted for the UE. In an aspect, configuring component 452, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 412, memory / memories 416, transceiver 402, BS communicating component 442, etc., can transmit, for the UE (e.g., UE 104) , the beam reporting configuration indicating resources for performing a UE-initiated transmission of a beam report. For example, configuring component 452 can configure the UE with the beam reporting resources based on a request from the UE (e.g., in Mode A, described above) , or can configure the UE with periodic reporting resources, etc. using semi-static signaling (e.g., RRC) , dynamic signaling (e.g., MAC-CE or DCI) , etc. In any case, the UE can transmit UE-initiated beam reports over the indicated resources (e.g., when certain events are detected) .

[0094] In one example, the beam report may include the signal measurement of a reference signal corresponding to the current beam (as a single measurement or along with measurements of other beams corresponding to other reference signals) , and report processing component 454 can select a new beam based on determining that the signal measurement value does not meet a threshold (or meets or is below a minimum threshold) . In method 600, optionally at Block 608, a measurement resource configuration indicated a single resource that corresponds to the reference signal can be transmitted for the UE. In an aspect, configuring component 452, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 412, memory / memories 416, transceiver 402, BS communicating component 442, etc., can transmit, for the UE (e.g., UE 104) , the measurement resource configuration indicating the single resource that corresponds to the reference signal. In this regard, for example, the UE can measure the reference signal over the single resource for analysis in an Event 1 detection. For example, configuring component 452 can transmit the measurement resource configuration using dynamic signaling (e.g., MAC-CE or DCI) to dynamically update the resource set as the current beam changes.

[0095] In another example, in method 600, optionally at Block 610, a measurement resource configuration indicating multiple resource for measuring that correspond to multiple reference signals, including a resource that corresponds to the reference signal,  can be transmitted for the UE. In an aspect, configuring component 452, e.g., in conjunction with processor (s) 412, memory / memories 416, transceiver 402, BS communicating component 442, etc., can transmit, for the UE (e.g., UE 104) , the measurement resource configuration indicating multiple resources for measuring that correspond to multiple reference signals, including the resource that corresponds to the reference signal. For example, configuring component 452 can configure multiple resources in a resource set for reporting signal measurements, but may configure one resource for measuring to detect Event 1 (the resource corresponding to the reference signal that uses the current beam) . For example, configuring component 452 can transmit the configuration having the resource set with multiple resources using RRC signaling or implicitly as the TCI state configuration (e.g., where the resource set can correspond to the activated TCI states or configured TCI states if there is only one activated TCI state) .

[0096] Moreover, as described in some examples, configuring component 452 can configure the resource set to be shared for Event 1 and / or Event 2 reporting such that the UE can report Event 1 and / or Event 2 using the same resource setting. In this example, as described, the UE can use the current beam measurement for Event 1 detection and / or reporting, and / or the UE can use all beam measurements for Event 2 detection and / or reporting. In one example, report processing component 454 can receive the UE-initiated beam report that uses shared resource set for Event 1 and Event 2 reporting, and can interpret certain Event 2 measurement values as indicating Event 1, as described above. In an example, the UE can use a specific value for the measurement values for Event 2 to indicate Event 1. In another example, if the current beam CRI / SSBRI reported in Event 2 is the strongest beam, this may indicate Event 1. In yet another example, if the reported measurement values are out-of-range or infinity, this may indicated Event 1. In any case, for example, report processing component 454 can detect Event 1 for the UE in certain cases.

[0097] In yet another example, configuring component 452 can configure the UE to include information for a current beam in UE-initiated beam reports. In one example, configuring component 452 can configure the UE in this regard by setting a flag in CSI reporting configuration. In this example, where the flag is set, the UE can report, and report processing component 454 can receive and process, the current beam measurement in UE-initiated beam reports (which may not be reported with a current beam index) . In an example, the UE-initiated beam report may include the absolute value for the current  beam, a differential value of the current beam from a strongest reported beam in the beam report, a differential value of the current beam from a threshold for detecting Event 1, etc. In this example, report processing component 454 can determine the measurement value for Event 1 based on the reported value or computing the value from the differential value for detecting Event 1 and / or configuring a new beam for the UE.

[0098] FIG. 7 illustrates an example of a wireless communication system 700 including a UE 104 transmitting a UE-initiated beam report to a network node 702, in accordance with aspects described herein. The network node 702 can include a base station 102 or gNB 180, a monolithic base station or gNB, a portion of a disaggregated base station or gNB, a UE in sidelink communication, etc. The network node 702 can optionally configure the UE 104 with measurement resources of reference signals to measure for detecting Event 1 (and / or Event 2) . The measurement resource configuration can be a separate configuration transmitted to the UE 104 indicating a single resource (e.g., as dynamic signaling updated as the current beam changes) , indicating multiple resources (e.g., as semi-static signaling or based on TCI state configuration (s) ) , etc. The network node 702 can also optionally configure the UE 104 with beam reporting resources 706 over which to transmit the UE-initiated beam report. This configuration of resources may occur based on the UE 104 requesting resources for transmitting UE-initiated beam reports or otherwise as an indication of periodic resources, etc.

[0099] At 708, the UE 104 can measure a current beam and / or other beams by measuring one or more reference signals associated with the one or more beams over corresponding resources, which may be indicated by the measurement resources 704 or otherwise determined (e.g., the UE 104 may implicitly determine a resource corresponding to the current beam for measuring to detect Event 1) . At 710, the UE 104 can detect Event 1 and / or Event 2 based on the signal measurements, and at 712, the UE 104 can transmit, to the network node, a UE-initiated beam report. An example of the UE-initiated beam report contents is shown at 714, and may optionally include an event indication (e.g., an indication of Event 1 or Event 2) , where the UE 104 detects the event, a current beam measurement value, and / or one or more other beam measurement values, as described herein. Based on the measurement values, network node 702 may configure a new beam for the UE 104 by transmitting a beam indication at 716. For example, where the current beam measurement value does not achieve a threshold and / or where other  beam measurement values achieve a threshold, the network node 702 may determine to configure a new beam for the UE 104, as described herein.

[0100] FIG. 8 is a block diagram of a MIMO communication system 800 including a base station 102 and a UE 104. The MIMO communication system 800 may illustrate aspects of the wireless communication access network 100 described with reference to FIG. 1. The base station 102 may be an example of aspects of the base station 102 described with reference to FIG. 1. The base station 102 may be equipped with antennas 834 and 835, and the UE 104 may be equipped with antennas 852 and 853. In the MIMO communication system 800, the base station 102 may be able to send data over multiple communication links at the same time. Each communication link may be called a “layer” and the “rank” of the communication link may indicate the number of layers used for communication. For example, in a 2x2 MIMO communication system where base station 102 transmits two “layers, ” the rank of the communication link between the base station 102 and the UE 104 is two.
