[0048] The communications in the environment 100 may follow any suitable communication standards or protocols, which are already in existence or to be developed in the future, such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , the fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR) , 6G, Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) standards, and employs any suitable communication technologies, including, for example, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) , time division multiplexing (TDM) , frequency division multiplexing (FDM) , code division multiplexing (CDM) , Bluetooth, ZigBee, and machine type communication (MTC) , enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) , massive machine type communication (mMTC) , ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) , Carrier Aggregation (CA) , Dual Connectivity (DC) , and New Radio Unlicensed (NR-U) technologies.

[0049] For synchronization and initial access, SSBs can be transmitted by a network device to a terminal device such as a UE. The SSB configuration, or referred to as synchronization signal burst (SS burst) configuration may be sent by a network device to a terminal device, e.g., upon Radio Resource Control (RRC) reconfiguration, for the terminal device to receive SSBs. The current configuration framework of Radio Access Network (RAN) allows configuring cell-defining (CD-SSB) and non-cell-defining SSB (NCD-SSB) . CD-SSB is provided via the DownlinkConfigCommon and the NCD-SSB was added as a bandwidth part (BWP) specific configuration.

[0050] In addition to the legacy synchronization signal block (SSB) , on-demand SSB (OD-SSB) transmission from a base station can be used by a user equipment (UE) for secondary cell (Scell) time / frequency synchronization, L1 / L3 measurements and SCell activation, etc. In some cases, the UE is expected to acquire coarse timing and frequency synchronization and AGC from a reference cell and would need to additionally monitor the tracking reference signals (TRSs) on an SSB-less SCell for acquiring fine time and frequency tracking and fine AGC. Such SSB-less SCell operation is feasible under a set of side conditions e.g., the receive time difference (RTD) between PCell (or reference cell) and SCell is within a cyclic prefix (CP) , the receive power level per RE (EPRE) of the SCell is within a threshold from the reference cell (for example PCell) etc. In other scenarios when the conditions cannot be met, the SSBs are required by the UE.

[0051] As per the RAN1#118 agreement, the on-demand SSB for SCell could be an NCD-SSB and not on synchronization raster. It is agreed to support periodicity adaptation of NCD-SSBs in the SCell. According to the 3GPP TS 38.300: “AUE may be configured with multiple SSBs provided that each BWP is configured with at most one SSB (CD-SSB or NCD-SSB) ” . This statement implies that NCD-SSBs or SSBs not on the synchronization raster can be configured to different BWPs than CD-SSB.

[0052] In order to achieve a good tradeoff between network energy saving and supporting the SSB-based operations of the UE, the network may want to dynamically change various SSB attributes such as SSB periodicity. For example, the network may benefit from dynamically controlling the presence or attributes of on-demand SSBs or dynamically varying the SSB periodicity of an always-on SSB configuration in a BWP or at a BWP switch from one BWP to another BWP.

[0053] The NCD-SSB defined in the RAN Release 17 configuration is static and configured with a fixed periodicity. The NCD-SSB also has a close association with the regular SSB defined in the FrequencyInfoDL, which also has a fixed periodicity. The signaling framework needs to be enhanced to support the configuration for on-demand SSBs or for flexible adaptation of SSBs.

[0054] Specifically, a NCD-SSB configuration is provided in a BWP-specific configuration, and therefore for OD-SSBs of the NCD-SSB type, one could consider that the OD-NCD-SSB are also provided per BWP. However, it is open what happens when there is BWP switching, meaning that it is unclear for example what SSB configuration may be used by the UE in the new activated BWP.

[0055] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for adapting an SSB configuration for a BWP. With this scheme, a terminal device receives, from a network device, at least one SSB configuration. Further, the terminal device receives from the network device an indication information for adapting an SSB configuration among the at least one SSB configuration specifically for a BWP. The indication information indicates the BWP, explicitly or implicitly.

[0056] With this indication information, the terminal device may be informed clearly which SSB configuration to be activated for a BWP. In this way, dynamic changing attribute (s) of an SSB configuration or switching between different SSB configurations for a particular BWP may be supported.

[0057] Fig. 2A illustrates a signaling flow 200A between a terminal device and a network device according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the signaling flow 200A will be described with reference to Fig. 1.

[0058] As shown in Fig. 2A, the network device 120 transmits (210) at least one synchronization signal block (SSB) configuration 205 to the terminal device 110. The terminal device 110 receives (220) the at least one SSB configuration 205 from the network device 120. For example, the at least one SSB configuration 205 may be transmitted in an RRC reconfiguration message from the network device 120 during RRC reconfiguration.

[0059] The terminal device 110 receives at least one SSB configuration 205 which is specific to a BWP. That is, an SSB configuration of the at least one SSB configuration 205 is applicable to the BWP. Such SSB configurations help UE SSB-based operations within the BWP and allow for fast network adaptation among them based on need. In some example embodiments, an SSB configuration of the at least one SSB configuration 205 is common to multiple BWPs or is specific to a cell including the BWPs. Such a SSB configuration may be activated for the particular BWP.

[0060] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration 205 comprises one SSB configuration which is an always-on SSB configuration or an on-demand SSB configuration. For example, one SSB configuration may be received by the terminal device 110, which is either the normal SSB (for example, legacy SSB) or the on-demand SSB.

[0061] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration 205 comprises multiple SSB configurations, including an always-on SSB configuration and an on-demand SSB configuration. For example, at least two SSB configurations may be received by the terminal device 110 from the network device 120, one being a normal or legacy type (i.e. always-on CD-SSB configurations) and one being an on-demand SSB type (e.g. OD-NCD-SSB) .

[0062] According to the embodiments of the present disclosure, attributes of the SSB configurations may be changed based on receiving an adaptation indication, or the SSB configurations for a BWP may be deactivated or switched to another one. Thus, herein such configurations are also generally referred to as “dynamic” SSB configurations.

[0063] Each dynamic SSB configuration can include one or more attributes, such as ARFCN, periodicity, positionInBurst, SSB-power, sub-carrier spacing, etc. An SSB Resource identifier (ID) (also referred to as SSB configuration ID) can be provided for each configuration, e.g., as a Resource-ID. An SSB configuration is identified by the corresponding SSB configuration ID.

[0064] When one regular SSB configuration (e.g., an always-on SSB configuration) is available in the BWP (e.g., NCD-SSB or CD-SSB) , the additional SSB configurations in the BWP can reuse some attributes from the existing configuration, e.g., ARFCN, sub-carrier spacing, SSB-power, etc.

[0065] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration 205 comprises an always-on SSB configuration and one or more additional SSB configurations, in which at least one attribute of the one or more additional SSB configurations is the same as the at least one attribute of the always-on SSB configuration. The terminal device 110 may determine that at least one attribute of the one or more additional SSB configurations is the same as the at least one attribute of the always-on SSB configuration.

[0066] For example, the network device 120 may transmit an additional SSB configuration without certain attribute (s) . The terminal device 110, when receives the additional SSB configuration, may determine that the missing attribute (s) of the additional SSB configuration are the same as the corresponding attribute (s) of the always-on SSB.

[0067] Similarly, when a first SSB configuration of a given type is configured in the BWP, additional SSB configurations in the BWP of the same type can reuse some attributes from the first configuration, e.g., ARFCN, sub-carrier spacing, SSB-power, etc.

[0068] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration 205 comprises a first SSB configuration and a second SSB configuration for a same SSB type, in which at least one attribute of the second SSB configuration is the same as the at least one attribute of the first SSB configuration. The terminal device 110 may determine that at least one attribute of the second SSB configuration is the same as the at least one attribute of the first SSB configuration.

[0069] For example, the network device 120 may transmit an SSB configuration for a certain SSB type without certain attribute (s) . The terminal device 110, when receiving the SSB configuration, may determine that the missing attribute (s) are the same as the corresponding attribute (s) of an existing SSB configuration for this certain SSB type. In some example embodiments, the same SSB type comprises one of a cell-defining SSB (CD SSB) or a non-cell-defining SSB (NCD SSB) .

[0070] Although multiple additional SSB configurations can be provided per BWP, only one of them can be activated at a time in a given BWP. In some example embodiments, additional SSB configuration (s) can be transmitted by the network device together with the normal (for example, legacy) SSBs. In some example embodiments, the additional SSB configuration (s) may be sent later, e.g., when an additional SSB configuration needs to be activated. For example, activation of additional SSB configuration means that normal (for example, legacy) SSB is replaced with additional / dynamically indicated SSB.

[0071] The network device 120 transmits (230) indication information 215 to the terminal device 110 for adapting an SSB configuration among the at least one SSB configuration for a bandwidth part (BWP) . The BWP for which the SSB configuration is to be adapted is indicated by the indication information, implicitly or explicitly, as will be described below. The terminal device 110 receives (240) the indication information 215 from the network device 120. For example, adapting an SSB configuration for a BWP may mean activating the SSB configuration, deactivating the SSB configuration, or modifying certain attributes of the SSB configuration, and so on, for the BWP. In some example embodiments, the indication information 215 may indicate the transmission periodicity and / or measurement periodicity that may be applied to a normal (for example, legacy) SSB configuration within a BWP.

[0072] In some example embodiments, the indication information 215 may include explicitly the SSB configuration identifier (s) to be adapted (e.g., to be activated and / or deactivated) . The configuration identifier may belong to the common set (pool) of configurations within the cell (cell-specific ones) , and / or the BWP-specific configuration (s) .

[0073] In some example embodiments, the indication information 215 may implicitly indicate the SSB configuration to be adapted. For example, the indication information 215 may indicate the transmission periodicity and / or measurement periodicity that may be applied to a normal (for example, legacy) SSB configuration within a BWP, e.g., by not including an SSB configuration ID.

[0074] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may receive further indication information from the network device, indicating at least one attribute to be applied to the SSB configuration as indicated in the further indication information explicitly or implicitly. In some example embodiments, the at least one attribute comprises a transmission periodicity, a measurement periodicity, or both of them.

[0075] The indication information 215 may be used to implicitly switch to a different BWP and use a specific SSB configuration for operation within the BWP. For example, the SSB activation MAC CE implicitly indicates the SSB configuration identifier to activate when at a BWP switch. For example, an SSB activation MAC CE can indicate to apply the same SSB configuration identifier in the activated BWP as used in the previous BWP. For example, if Resource ID#2 was used before the BWP switch, the terminal device 110 can apply Resource ID#2 corresponding to the activated BWP.

[0076] In some embodiments, the indication information 215 can also include the BWP ID for each SSB configuration ID that is included for (de) activation, so that it indicates which SSB configuration associated with the BWP is (de) activated to allow BS to control the SSB transmission within a BWP.

[0077] In some example embodiments, an SSB activation is valid only for the current activated BWP, and the activated SSB configuration is implicitly deactivated upon the BWP switch. SSB activation for the new BWP requires new indication information (e.g., sent via an SSB configuration MAC CE as described below) .

[0078] For example, the indication information 215 for activating the SSB configuration may be received by the terminal device at a BWP switch. The BWP switch is from a current BWP in which the terminal device 110 operates to a different BWP indicated by the indication information. In this case, the indication information 215 may indicate that a current active SSB for the current BWP is to be deactivated.

[0079] Based on determining that the indication information 215 for activating an SSB configuration indicates a different BWP than the currently active one, the terminal device 110 performs the BWP switch based on the indication information 215 to the different BWP, and deactivates the current active SSB configuration based on the BWP switch. Then, the terminal device 110 activates the SSB configuration indicated in the indication information 215 within the different BWP.

[0080] In some example embodiments, the indication information 215 indicates a BWP switch as described above and does not include an SSB configuration ID of a to-be-activated SSB configuration. In this case, the indication information 215 indicates that the SSB configuration which is activated in the current BWP is to be activated in the different BWP after the switch. Accordingly, the terminal device 110 may determine that the SSB configuration activated for the current BWP is to be activated in the different BWP to it will switched.

[0081] Reference is now made to Fig. 2B, which illustrates a schematic diagram 200B showing two example BWP configurations along with two SSB configurations. For the purpose of discussion, the example schematic diagram 200B will be described with reference to Fig. 1.

[0082] In the example of Fig. 2B, the terminal device 110 may operate in two different BWPs, i.e., a BWP1 201, and a BWP2 202. At least one SSB configuration sent by the network device 120 may be configured for each BWP. For example, an SSB configuration 204 (e.g., an on-demand SSB configuration) may be applicable for both the BWP1 201 and the BWP2 202. In addition, the BWP1 201 may be a wide BWP configured with an SSB configuration 203 (e.g., a legacy SSB configuration) . Each SSB configuration may be activated or deactivated for a respective BWP.

[0083] The network device 120 may send indication information to the terminal device 110. Based on the received indication information, the terminal device 110 may accordingly activate a configuration for a BWP, deactivate a configuration for a BWP, modify certain attribute (s) of an SSB configuration, switch from one BWP to another, or perform any combination thereof. For example, the terminal device 110 is currently operating in BWP1 201 with the SSB configuration 203 activated. The network device 120 may send an information indication, indicating that the SSB configuration 204 is to be activated for BWP2 202. Upon receiving the information indication, the terminal device 110 will switch to operating in BWP2 202 and activate the SSB configuration 204. The SSB configuration 204 is implicitly deactivated when switched from BWP2 202 to BWP1 201.

[0084] In some example embodiments, the network device 120 transmits the indication information 215 via a medium access control (MAC) control element (MAC CE) defined for adapting an SSB configuration, a BWP switch downlink control information (DCI) , a radio resource control (RRC) message with a BWP switch indication, or any combination of them.

[0085] For example, an SSB configuration activation MAC-CE may be used to transmit the indication information to the terminal device 110, which helps the terminal device 110 understand which dynamic SSB configuration to use while in a BWP and particularly after a BWP switch. Alternatively, the BWP-switch DCI / RRC / MAC CE can indicate the activation of a BWP-specific SSB configuration, for example implicitly (e.g. the default one of the BWP) or explicitly by including the SSB configuration ID.

[0086] In some example embodiments, the MAC CE defined for adapting an SSB configuration comprises one or more fields. For example, the MAC CE may include a first field indicating whether the SSB configuration is to be activated or deactivated; a second field indicating at least one cell associated with the SSB configuration; a third field indicating a BWP ID associated with the SSB configuration; a fourth field indicating an SSB configuration ID of the SSB configuration a fifth field indicating a measurement periodicity associated with the SSB configuration; a sixth field indicating a transmission periodicity associated with the SSB configuration; or any combination of these fields. Examples of such MAC CEs will be described in more detail in connection with Figs. 3A-3B and Figs. 4A-4B.

[0087] In some example embodiments, the indication information 115 may indicate explicitly to deactivate an SSB configuration (e.g. by setting a field indicating “deactivation” ) . For such an SSB deactivated based on the indication information 115, the terminal device 110 may act as follows. For a deactivated on-demand SSB configuration, the terminal device 110 does not measure the OD-SSBs according to this SSB configuration. If the terminal device 110 has an always-on SSB configuration, it will continue to use the always-on SSB configuration and otherwise UE will not use any SSB configuration. For the SSB attribute adaptation case, if an attribute of an SSB configuration is to be disabled, then the older value of the attribute will be used for this SSB configuration. For example, if the indication information 115 indicates that periodicity of the current active SSB configuration is to be deactivated, older periodicity (e.g., default periodicity) of this SSB configuration will be used.

[0088] Different potential implementations of the SSB resource activation MAC CE (also referred to as an SSB configuration activation MAC-CE, an SSB activation MAC CE in short) may be provided according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling is described in more detail in connection with Figs. 3A-3B and Figs. 4A-4B.

[0089] Reference is now made to Fig. 3A-3B. Figs. 3A-3B illustrate example formats of SSB resource activation MAC-CE for a BWP according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, which may be applied to a cell.

[0090] As shown in Fig. 3A, an example format 300A of an SSB resource activation MAC CE may include an “A / D” field. In a MAC CE in the format 300A, the “A / D” field indicates whether the SSB configuration indicated in the present MAC CE is to be activated or deactivated. The format 300A also includes a “Serving Cell-ID” field and a “BWP-ID” field, indicating a serving cell and a BWP to which the SSB configuration will apply, respectively.

[0091] Further, the format 300A includes an “SSB-Resource-ID” field, which indicates a Resource-Id that may belong to the common (cell-specific) configuration or BWP-specific configuration of SSBs. Other fields shown in Fig. 3A are reserved, and additional fields for the format 300A are omitted from Fig. 3A for clarity.

[0092] As shown in Fig. 3B, an example format 300B of an SSB resource activation MAC CE may include an “A / D” field. Similar to the format 300A, a MAC CE in the format 300B, the “A / D” field indicates whether the SSB configuration indicated in the present MAC CE is to be activated or deactivated. The format 300A also includes a “Serving Cell-ID” field and a “BWP-ID” field, indicating a serving cell and a BWP to which the SSB configuration will apply, respectively.

[0093] Different from format 300A, a MAC-CE in the format 300B provides the transmission periodicity and measurement periodicity to be applied to an existing SSB configuration. As shown in Fig. 3B, the transmission periodicity is indicated by a “Meas-periodicity” field, and measurement periodicity is indicated by a “SSB-periodicity” field. For example, the periodicity values can be defined to represent values corresponding to 5ms, 10ms, 20ms, 40ms, 80ms, and so on. Additional fields for the format 300B are omitted from Fig. 3B for clarity.

[0094] In an example, the terminal device 110 may first receive a first MAC CE in the format 300A from the network device 120, which indicates that an SSB configuration with the SSB-Resource-ID “#2” is to be activated. The terminal device 110 may activate the SSB configuration “#2” for the BWP as indicated in the MAC CE by the BWP-ID.

[0095] Later, the terminal device 110 may receive a second MAC CE in the format 300B with an activation indication. In the absence of the SSB-Resource-ID, the second MAC CE implicitly indicates that the currently activated SSB configuration “#2” will be applied to the BWP indicated in the BWP-ID field. During this process, the UE may also perform a BWP switch based on the BWP-ID, which is further described in connection with Fig. 5.

[0096] In addition, the UE may modify the attributes of the SSB configuration “#2” to use it for the indicated BWP, changing the measurement periodicity and the transmission periodicity of this configuration to the values as indicated in the second MAC CE.

[0097] Reference is now made to Figs. 4A-4B. Figs. 4A-4B illustrate example formats of SSB resource activation MAC-CE for a BWP according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, which may be applied to a plurality of cells.

[0098] As shown in Fig. 4A, an example format 400A of an SSB resource activation MAC CE includes an “SSB-Resource-ID” field, which indicates a Resource-Id that may belong to the common (cell-specific) configuration or BWP-specific configuration of SSBs. The format 400A also includes a “BWP-ID” field indicating a BWP to which the SSB configuration will apply. Further, the format 400A indicates multiple cells (as indicated by “C7” to “C1” ) to which the SSB configuration will apply. The number of cells in different examples may be different. Additional fields for the format 400A are omitted from Fig. 4A for clarity. In an example, the format may also have a field indicating whether the SSB configuration is to be activated or deactivated.

[0099] As shown in Fig. 4B, an example format 400B of an SSB resource activation MAC CE indicates multiple cells (as indicated by “C7” to “C1” ) to which the SSB configuration associated with the present MAC CE will apply. Similar to the format 300B, a MAC CE in the format 400B provides the transmission periodicity and measurement periodicity to be applied to an existing SSB configuration. The transmission periodicity is indicated by a “Meas-periodicity” field, and measurement periodicity is indicated by a “SSB-periodicity” field. The number of cells in different examples may be different. Additional fields for the format 400A are omitted from Fig. 4A for clarity.

[0100] In an example, the terminal device 110 may first receive a first MAC CE in the format 400A from the network device 120, which indicates a SSB configuration with the SSB-Resource-ID “#3” is to be activated. The terminal devices may activate the SSB configuration “#3” for the BWP as indicated in the MAC CE by the “BWP-ID” field.

[0101] Later, the terminal device 110 may receive a second MAC CE in the format 400B with an activation indication. In the absence of the SSB-Resource-ID, the second MAC CE may implicitly indicate that the currently activated SSB configuration “#3” will be applied. In an example, in the absence of a BWP ID indicated by a “BWP ID” field, the second MAC CE may indicate the that the terminal device 110 is to continue operating in the current BWP, for example, the BWP as indicated in the first MAC CE.

[0102] In addition, the UE may modify the attributes of the SSB configuration “#3” to use it for the currently active BWP, changing the measurement periodicity and the transmission periodicity of this configuration to the values indicated in the second MAC CE.

[0103] The network may need to indicate changes to multiple component carriers for cases in which the UE is configured with more than one serving cell. The implementations as shown in Figs. 4A-4B may be beneficial because it may be needed to change the SSB transmission properties for some or all activated serving cells. Since in this case, it is the total transmissions that impact the network energy consumption. Therefore, for example, relaxing the periodicity only on one serving cell while others continue to operate with shorter periodicity may not result in energy saving.

[0104] Reference is further made to Fig. 5, which illustrates a flowchart illustrating an example process 500 for handling SSB configuration activation MAC-CEs, according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For simplicity of illustration, only OD-SSBs are considered in this example. The process 500 may be performed by a terminal device, for example, the terminal device 110 in Fig. 1. For the purpose of discussion, the process 500 will be described with reference to Fig. 1.

[0105] At block 505, the terminal device 110 receives a Radio Resource Control (RRC) reconfiguration message from the network device 120, which indicates SCell addition with dynamic SSB configuration. At least one SSB configuration may be received at this point.

[0106] At block 510 and block 515, the terminal device 110 waits for SCell activation, and checks whether an SCell activation MAC-CE is received. The terminal device 110 continues waiting for the SCell activation if no SCell activation MAC-CE is received. Upon receiving an SCell activation MAC-CE received, the process 500 proceeds to block 520, at which the terminal device checks whether it receives an SSBConfiguration activation MAC-CE.

[0107] If it does not receive an SSBConfiguration activation MAC-CE, the process 500 proceeds to block 525, at which the terminal device 110 performs the SCell activation. If the terminal device 110 does receive an SSBConfiguration activation MAC-CE, the process 500 proceeds to block 530. At block 530, the terminal device 110 performs the OD-SSB-based SCell activation. In other words, the terminal device 110 activates an SSB configuration as indicated in the SSB configuration activation MAC-CE. Then, the terminal device uses the activated SSB configuration and measurement configuration mapped to the activated SSB to operate, and activate SCell accordingly. As discussed earlier, the terminal device 110 activates the SSB configuration for a particular BWP indicated by the SSBConfiguration activation MAC-CE

[0108] In either case, the process 500 proceeds to block 535, at which an SCell is activated. Then, at block 540, the terminal device 110 continues checking whether it receives a further SSBConfiguration activation MAC-CE. If no SSBConfiguration activation MAC-CE is received yet, the terminal device 110 continue operating in the currently activated BWP at block 545. If the terminal device 110 determines that it receives an SSBConfiguration activation MAC-CE at block 540, the process 500 proceeds to block 550. At block 550, the terminal device 110 compares the BWP ID indicated by this SSBConfiguration activation MAC-CE with the BWP ID of the currently activated BWP in which the terminal device 110 operates, to determine whether the two BWP IDs are the same or different.

[0109] If the terminal device 110 determines that the two BWP IDs are the same, indicating no BWP switch is required, the terminal device 110 continues operation in the currently activated BWP at block 555. Further, at block 555, the terminal device 110 activates the SSB configuration indicated by the SSBConfiguration activation MAC-CE received at block 540 and uses the activated SSB for L1 measurement in the activated BWP.

[0110] If the terminal device 110 determines that the two BWP IDs are different, indicating a BWP switch is required, the process 500 proceeds to block 560. At block 560, the terminal device 110 switches from operating in the currently activated BWP to the BWP indicated by the SSBConfiguration activation MAC-CE received at block 540. Further, the terminal device 110 activates the SSB configuration indicated by the SSBConfiguration activation MAC-CE received at block 540 and uses the activated SSB for L1 measurement in the activated BWP.

[0111] Conventional specifications do not support the configuration of multiple SSBs per BWP. In the embodiments of the present disclosure, an exception to that rule is introduced so that multiple SSB adaptation configurations per BWP can be configured, and one of the configurations (anormal SSB configuration or “dynamic SSB” configuration for adaptation) is activated at a time. It provides a solution to control the SSB configuration that UE may use while in a BWP and particularly after a BWP switch among the possible multiple SSB configurations configured to the UE for the activated BWP (including both OD-NCD-SSB and NCD-SSB) . Such SSB configurations may be dynamically changed to reflect various SSB attributes. The solution helps the network to achieve energy saving by controlling the SSB transmission, e.g. on-demand or by varying the SSB periodicity of existing SSB configuration.

[0112] Fig. 6 shows a flowchart of an example method 600 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 600 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to Fig. 1.

[0113] At block 610, the terminal device 110 receives, from the network device 120, at least one synchronization signal block (SSB) configuration.

[0114] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration is specific to the BWP.

[0115] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration comprises one SSB configuration which is an always-on SSB configuration or an on-demand SSB configuration; or the at least one SSB configuration comprises multiple SSB configurations including an always-on SSB configuration and an on-demand SSB configuration.

[0116] In some example embodiments, an SSB configuration among the at least one SSB configuration is identified by an SSB configuration identifier (ID) .

[0117] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration comprises an always-on SSB configuration and one or more additional SSB configurations, and the terminal device 110 determines that at least one attribute of the one or more additional SSB configurations is same as the at least one attribute of the always-on SSB configuration.

[0118] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration comprises a first SSB configuration and a second SSB configuration for a same SSB type, and the terminal device 110 determines that at least one attribute of the second SSB configuration is same as the at least one attribute of the first SSB configuration.

[0119] In some example embodiments, the same SSB type comprises one of a cell-defining SSB (CD SSB) type or a non-cell-defining SSB (NCD SSB) type.

[0120] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration is common to multiple BWPs or is specific to a cell including the BWP.

[0121] At block 620, the terminal device 110 receives, from the network device 120, indication information for adapting an SSB configuration among the at least one SSB configuration for a bandwidth part (BWP) , where the BWP is indicated by indication information.

[0122] In some example embodiments, when the terminal device 110 receives the indication information for adapting an SSB configuration, the terminal device 110 receives, from the network device 120, the indication information for activating or deactivating the SSB configuration for the BWP based on the indication information.

[0123] In some example embodiments, the BWP is a first BWP, the indication information for activating the SSB configuration is received at a BWP switch from a second BWP to the first BWP, the indication information does not include an SSB configuration ID of a to-be-activated SSB configuration, and the terminal device 110 determines, based on determining that the SSB configuration is activated in the second BWP, that the SSB configuration is to be activated in the first BWP.

[0124] In some example embodiments, the indication information for adapting the SSB configuration comprises an SSB configuration ID of the SSB configuration to be adapted.

[0125] In some example embodiments, the indication information further comprises a BWP ID associated with the SSB configuration ID.

[0126] In some example embodiments, the BWP is a first BWP, the indication information for adapting the SSB configuration is received at a BWP switch from a second BWP to the first BWP, and the terminal device 110 deactivate, based on the BWP switch, a current active SSB configuration for the second BWP.

[0127] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 receives, from the network device 120, further indication information indicating at least one attribute to be applied to the SSB configuration.

[0128] In some example embodiments, the at least one attribute comprises at least one of a transmission periodicity or a measurement periodicity.

[0129] In some example embodiments, the BWP is a first BWP, and the terminal device 110 performs a BWP switch from the second BWP to the first BWP based on determining that the received indication information indicates the first BWP which is different from a second BWP in which the terminal device 110 operates, and activates the SSB configuration within the first BWP.

[0130] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 perform a BWP switch from the second BWP to the first BWP, where the indication information for adapting the SSB configuration is received via at least one of the following: a medium access control (MAC) control element (MAC CE) defined for adapting an SSB configuration; a BWP switch downlink control information (DCI) ; or a radio resource control (RRC) message with a BWP switch indication.

[0131] In some example embodiments, the MAC CE defined for adapting an SSB configuration comprises at least one of the following fields: a first field indicating whether the SSB configuration is to be activated or deactivated; a second field indicating at least one cell associated with the SSB configuration; a third field indicating a BWP ID associated with the SSB configuration; a fourth field indicating an SSB configuration ID of the SSB configuration. a fifth field indicating a measurement periodicity associated with the SSB configuration; or a sixth field indicating a transmission periodicity associated with the SSB configuration.

[0132] Those skilled in the art can understand that all operations and features of a terminal device as described above with reference to Figs. 2-5 are likewise applicable to the method 600 and have similar effects.

[0133] In some example embodiments, an apparatus capable of performing the method 600 (for example, the terminal device 110) may comprise means for performing the respective steps of the method 600. The means may be implemented in any suitable form. For example, the means may be implemented in a circuitry or software module.

[0134] In some example embodiments, the means for receiving the indication information for adapting an SSB configuration comprises means for receiving, from the network device, the indication information for activating or deactivating the SSB configuration for the BWP based on the indication information.

[0135] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration is specific to the BWP.

[0136] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration comprises one SSB configuration which is an always-on SSB configuration or an on-demand SSB configuration; or the at least one SSB configuration comprises multiple SSB configurations including an always-on SSB configuration and an on-demand SSB configuration.

[0137] In some example embodiments, an SSB configuration among the at least one SSB configuration is identified by an SSB configuration identifier (ID) .

[0138] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration comprises an always-on SSB configuration and one or more additional SSB configurations, and the apparatus further comprises means for determining that at least one attribute of the one or more additional SSB configurations is same as the at least one attribute of the always-on SSB configuration.

[0139] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration comprises a first SSB configuration and a second SSB configuration for a same SSB type, and the apparatus further comprises means for determining that at least one attribute of the second SSB configuration is same as the at least one attribute of the first SSB configuration.

[0140] In some example embodiments, the same SSB type comprises one of a cell-defining SSB (CD SSB) type or a non-cell-defining SSB (NCD SSB) type.

[0141] In some example embodiments, the at least one SSB configuration is common to multiple BWPs or is specific to a cell including the BWP.

[0142] In some example embodiments, the BWP is a first BWP, the indication information for activating the SSB configuration is received at a BWP switch from a second BWP to the first BWP, the indication information does not include an SSB configuration ID of a to-be-activated SSB configuration, and the apparatus further comprises means for determining, based on determining that the SSB configuration is activated in the second BWP, that the SSB configuration is to be activated in the first BWP.

[0143] In some example embodiments, the indication information for adapting the SSB configuration comprises an SSB configuration ID of the SSB configuration to be adapted.

[0144] In some example embodiments, the indication information further comprises a BWP ID associated with the SSB configuration ID.
