TERMINAL DEVICE, NETWORK NODE, AND METHODS THEREIN FOR ENHANCED HANDOVER OR MEASUREMENTTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to communication technology, and more particularly, to network nodes and methods therein for enhanced handover or measurement or communication.BACKGROUND

[0002] There is an on-going study item (SI) on Artificial Intelligence (AI) mobility for Release 19 (Rel-19) in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) , and the objectives of this SI include Radio Resource Management (RRM) measurement prediction, RRM measurement event prediction, Radio Link Failure (RLF) prediction, and Handover Failure (HOF) prediction via Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI / ML) , as described below.

[0003] Study and evaluate potential benefits and gains of AI / ML aided mobility for network triggered L3-based handover, considering the following aspects:

[0004] · AI / ML based RRM measurement and event prediction,

[0005] · Cell-level measurement prediction including intra and inter-frequency (User Equipment (UE) sided and Network (NW) sided model) [RAN2]

[0006] · Inter-cell Beam-level measurement prediction for L3 Mobility (UE sided and NW sided model) [RAN2]

[0007] · HO failure / RLF prediction (UE sided model) [RAN2]

[0008] · Measurement events prediction (UE sided model) [RAN2]

[0036] It shall be understood that although the terms "first" and "second" etc. may be used herein to describe various elements, these elements should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element from another. For example, a first element could be termed a second element, and similarly, a second element could be termed a first element, without departing from the scope of example embodiments. As used herein, the term "and / or" includes any and all combinations of one or more of the associated listed terms.

[0037] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of example embodiments. As used herein, the singular forms "a" , "an" and "the" are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It will be further understood that the terms "comprises" , "comprising" , "has" , "having" , "includes" and / or "including" , when used herein, specify the presence of stated features, elements, and / or components etc., but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof.

[0038] In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skills in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0040] - Event A1: Serving becomes better than threshold

[0041] - Event A2: Serving becomes worse than threshold

[0042] - Event A3 (CondEvent A3) : Neighbor (conditional reconfiguration candidate) becomes offset better than Speical Cell (SpCell)

[0043] - Event A4 (CondEvent A4) : Neighbor (conditional reconfiguration candidate) becomes better than threshold

[0044] - Event A5 (CondEvent A5) : SpCell becomes worse than threshold1 and neighbor (conditional reconfiguration candidate) becomes better than threshold2

[0047] - Event B2: Primary Cell (PCell) becomes worse than threshold1 and inter RAT neighbor becomes better than threshold2

[0048] - Event I1: Interference becomes higher than threshold

[0049] - Event D1 (CondEvent D1) : Distance between UE and referenceLocation1 is above threshold1 and distance between UE and referenceLocation2 is below threshlod2

[0050] - CondEvent D2: Distance between UE and a moving referenceLocation 1 is above threshold1 and distance between UE and a moving referenceLocation2 is blow threshold2

[0051] - CondEvent Ti: Time measured at UE becomes more than configured threshld t1-Threshld but is less than t1-Threshold + duration.

[0052] A network node may configure individual timeToTrigger for one or more measurement events, where timeToTrigger means time during which specific criteria for an event needs to be met in order to trigger a measurement report.

[0053] Conditional handover (CHO) is executed by the UE only when associated execution condition (s)  / event (s) happen. The UE starts evaluating the execution condition (s) upon receiving the CHO configuration, and stops evaluating the execution condition (s) once a handover is executed. The CHO configuration includes CHO candidate cell (s) and execution condition (s) . One execution condition may include one or two trigger conditions (e.g., CHO events A3 / A5) , based on up to single Reference Signal (RS) type and at most two different trigger quantities for the evaluation of CHO execution condition of a single candidate cell. During CHO execution, if the UE starts synchronization with the target cell, then the UE does not monitor the source cell. Additionally, the UE may be notified via Downlink Control Information (DCI) to enable CHO condition (s) configured with network energy saving event indication. The condition events may include CondEvent A3, CondEvent A4, CondEvent A5, CondEvent D 1, CondEvent D2, and / or CondEvent T1.

[0054] The procedure of CHO includes the follows steps from the perspective of control plane handling:

[0055] - Step 0: An Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) provides mobility control information to a source gNB and candidate target gNBs.

[0056] - Step 1: Measurement control and report information is exchanged between a UE and the source gNB.

[0057] - Step 2: The source gNB decides to use CHO for the UE.

[0058] - Step 3: The source gNB requests CHO for one or more candidate cells under one or more candidate gNBs. A CHO request message is sent for each candidate cell.

[0059] - Step 4: The candidate gNB (s) implements admission control procedure for the UE.

[0060] - Step 5: The candidate gNB (s) sends CHO response (HO Request Acknowledge) including configuration of CHO candidate cell (s) to the source gNB. The CHO response message is sent for each candidate cell.

[0061] - Step 6: The source gNB sends an RRCReconfiguration message to the UE, containing the configuration of CHO candidate cell (s) and CHO execution condition (s) .

[0062] - Step 7: The UE sends an RRCReconfigurationComplete message to the source gNB.

[0063] - Step 7a. The source gNB sends the EARLY STATUS TRANSFER message to the UE if early data forwarding is applied.

[0064] - Step 8: The UE maintains connection with the source gNB after receiving CHO configuration, and starts evaluating the CHO execution conditions for the candidate cell (s) . If at least one CHO candidate cell satisfies the corresponding CHO execution condition, the UE detaches from the source gNB, applies the stored corresponding configuration for that selected candidate cell, synchronizes to that candidate cell and completes the RRC handover procedure by sending RRCReconfigurationComplete message to the target gNB. The UE releases stored CHO configurations after successful completion of RRC handover procedure.

[0065] - Step 8a / b: The target gNB sends the Handover Success message to the source gNB to inform that the UE has successfully accessed the target cell. In return, the source gNB sends the Sequence Number (SN) STATUS Transfer message to the target gNB.

[0066] - Step 8c: The source gNB sends the Handover Cancel message toward the other signaling connections or other candidate target gNBs, if any, to cancel CHO for the UE.

[0067] Fig. 1 is a flowchart illustrating a method 100 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method 100 can be performed by a terminal device, e.g., a UE.

[0068] At block 110, the terminal device receives, from a first network node (e.g., gNB of a serving cell of the terminal device) , a handover or measurement configuration including at least one of: a first condition, a second condition, a first timer associated with the first condition, and a second timer associated with the second condition. Here, the handover or measurement configuration may be associated with handover or conditional handover. Any of the first condition, second condition, first timer, and second timer may be explicit or implicit information received from the first network node, or any of the first condition, second condition, first timer, and second timer, if not present in the handover or measurement configuration, may be determined according to prediction at the terminal device.

[0069] In an example, the first condition may include a first measurement event and / or a first prediction event, and / or the second condition may include a second measurement event and / or a second prediction event. The first timer may be same as the second timer, or the first timer may be different from the second timer.

[0070] For example, the first measurement event may include at least one of:

[0071] - radio link quality of a first cell served by the first network node becomes worse than a first threshold (e.g., this condition may imply that the quality of the serving cell remains below a threshold for more than a specific amount of time) ,

[0072] - radio link quality of a third cell is offset better than radio link quality of the first cell at a time instance or after a time instance or for a given time duration,

[0073] - there is no suitable target cell with radio link quality better than a threshold for the terminal device for handover purpose or for data transmission purpose (e.g., the condition may implies that the unavailability of a suitable target cell will hold for more than a specific amount of time) ,

[0074] - an RLF event,

[0075] - a Relaxed RLF event, and

[0076] - a number of consecutive indications for radio link quality of the first cell lower than a quality threshold reaches a threshold.

[0077] For example, the first prediction event may include at least one of:

[0078] - a predicted measurement event,

[0080] - a predicted Handover Failure, HOF, event,

[0081] - a predicted short time of stay handover towards a potential target cell, and

[0082] - a predicted ping-pong handover toward a potential target cell.

[0083] For example, the second measurement event may include at least one of:

[0084] - radio link quality of a second cell becomes better than a second threshold (e.g., before the first timer expires, if configured) ,

[0085] - radio link quality of the second cell becomes offset better than radio link quality of the third cell at a time instance or after a time instance or for a given time duration, and

[0086] - a number of consecutive indications for radio link quality of the second cell higher than a quality threshold reaches a threshold.

[0092] - the first timer expires (which triggers the second condition) , and

[0093] - the radio link quality of the first cell remains below the first threshold for a time longer than a specific time length (e.g., the specific time length may be configured by the first network node to the terminal device or may be pre-configured at the first network node and the terminal device) .

[0094] Here, the first cell may be same as the second cell, or the first cell may be different from the second cell. The first threshold may be same as or different from the second threshold. The radio link quality may be measured by Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) , Reference Signal Received Quality (RSRQ) , Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) , Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) , Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) , or Block Error Rate (BLER) .

[0095] In an example, the terminal device may perform a first action in response to the first condition being met, perform a second action in response to the second condition being met after the first condition is met; and / or performing a third action in response to the second condition not being met before the second timer expires.

[0108] - staying in Radio Resource Control (RRC) inactive or idle mode before the first timer expires (e.g., assuming that the first network node configures the terminal device to enter RRC inactive or idle mode, or assuming that the first network node allows the terminal device to stay in RRC inactive or idle mode for the first action) ,

[0196] - continuing connection with the first cell for data transmission,

[0197] - continuing data transmission and / or reception with the first cell, and

[0198] - stopping the first timer.

[0199] For example, the third action may include at least one of:

[0200] - transmitting an indication message (e.g. RRCReconfigurationComplete, failure, RRCReestablishment Request) to the first, second, or third network node, indicating handover complete, handover failure, or RRC reestablishment (e.g., in specific time-frequency resources) ,

[0201] - releasing a stored conditional configuration after successful completion ofRRC handover procedure from the first cell to the second cell,

[0202] - resuming suspended RRC connection re-establishment,

[0203] - resuming suspended RLF detection,

[0204] - continuing connection with the first cell for data transmission,

[0205] - continuing data transmission and / or reception with the first cell,

[0206] - receiving a paging signal from the third network node, and

[0207] - stopping the first timer.

[0208] In an example, the first network node (or e.g., a master network node of the first network node, a network server, a core network, or an OAM) may predict (e.g., using AI or ML) that the first condition is to be met at first time or within a first time window, and / or predict (e.g., using AI or ML) that the second condition is to be met at second time or within a second time window. Alternatively, the first network node may receive, from the terminal device, information on prediction that the first condition is to be met at first time or within a first time window and / or information on prediction that the second condition is to be met at second time or within a second time window.

[0209] In an example, the first time or first time window and / or the second time or second time window may be predicted based on fluctuation of radio link quality of the first cell and / or radio link quality of the second cell.

[0210] In an example, the first action may be configured or activated in response to predicting that the second condition is to be met at the second time or within the second time window or in response to receiving the information on prediction that the second condition is to be met at the second time or within the second time window.

[0211] In an example, the handover or measurement configuration may contain a first configuration for handover from the first cell to the third cell and a second configuration for handover from the third cell to the second cell.

[0212] In an example, the first network node may send paging signaling to the terminal device a time duration after sending the handover or measurement configuration to the terminal device or a time duration after the terminal device performs the first action.

[0213] In an example, the first network node may send a conditional handover request message to at least one of the second network node and the third network node for potential handover for the terminal device, and then the first network node receives a corresponding conditional handover response message (e.g. handover request acknowledge) from at least one of the second network node and the third network node. Then the first network node may send an RRCReconfiguration message to the terminal device, containing conditional configuration information (including e.g., the condition (s) , timer (s) , and / or action (s)) .

[0214] The present disclosure will be further explained with reference to some specific examples.

[0215] In one case, a UE and / or a network node may predict that there is no suitable cell for connection during a short time period. As an example, the UE may predict the occurrence of an RLF in the future assuming that the UE would be camping on the current serving cell. At the same time, the UE’s prediction and / or the network node’s prediction may reveal that there is no other suitable cell to serve the UE other than the serving cell. Namely, an RLF would be unavoidable and the UE would be out of coverage for a period of time. In a legacy solution, after the RLF the UE may trigger RRC reestablishment which will introduce connection establishment delays due to the time needed for the UE to find a suitable reestablishment cell for connection. In such case the network may retrieve the UE context from the last serving Radio Access Network (RAN) node, but it is also possible that such option is not available, hence the new serving RAN node will build the a UE context from scratch as well as establish an RRC connection with the UE. These will reduce the network performance significantly, due to the long time during which the UE will be out of service and the increased amount of signaling over the air.

[0216] In another case, a UE and / or a network node may predict that the UE, after handover to a target cell, may stay in the target cell very shortly and then may be handed over to another cell or be handed over back to the original cell served by the network node. In a legacy solution, such mobility case may be treated as ping-pong handover, or short-time-of-stay. The network may therefore take mobility actions aimed at avoiding such mobility event. However, such mobility actions may imply that the UE will be maintained on the serving cell, where coverage might be degrading and may thus cause an RLF. This will also reduce the network performance and end up in the same re-establishment procedure as discussed above.

[0217] Figs. 3A-3C are schematic diagrams each showing an example of a time window provided for solving or mitigating the above problems according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The time windows according to the present disclosure will be referred to here as “silent time window” (see Figs. 3A and 3B) and “transit time window” (see Fig. 3C) , respectively. As used herein, a time window may explicitly or implicitly represent the start time of the time window and / or the end time of the time window, where the start time and / or the end time may refer to a reference time point or may refer to a reference time point and a time duration.

[0218] Referring to Fig. 3A, a UE or a network node serving the UE predicts that, the radio link quality between a serving cell (i.e., Cell 1) and the UE will be below a first absolute threshold (i.e., th1) after time t1, and there will be no suitable target cell with good enough radio link quality for the UE for handover purpose until time t2. An additional condition could be that radio link quality between Cell 2 and the UE will be below a second absolute threshold (i.e., th2) until (and including) t2. The time period between t1 and t2 is referred to as “silent time window” .

[0219] In case of UE side prediction, the UE may report the prediction information to the network node via one or more messages at the same time instance or at different time instances. Alternatively, the prediction above may be done by the network node at the network side. The prediction here may be based on AI or non-AI or AI plus non-AI.

[0220] For example, upon deriving the above prediction, the UE may receive a conditional handover configuration (e.g., in an RRCReconfiguration message) from the network node and then sends a corresponding RRCReconfigurationComplete message to the network node no later than time t1. The conditional handover configuration includes one or more events. In an example, the conditional handover configuration may include one conditional event:

[0221] - CondEvent A5-1: PCell / PSCell (e.g., Cell 1) becomes worse than th1 (at time t1) AND Conditional reconfiguration candidate (e.g., Cell 2) becomes better than th2 (at time t2, where t1≤t2≤t1+Δt, and Δt may be a configured timer or a timer based on prediction) . Note that t1 and t2 configured by the network node may be different from t1 and t2 predicted by the UE or by the network node.

[0222] In another example, the conditional handover configuration may include two conditional events:

[0223] - CondEvent A2: Serving cell (e.g., Cell 1) becomes worse than th1, and

[0224] - CondEvent A4: Conditional reconfiguration candidate (e.g., Cell 2) becomes better than th2.

[0225] The UE may start evaluating the CHO execution condition (s) in the conditional handover configuration from the network node, and then the UE may detach from Cell 1 when the configured CHO execution condition for Cell 1 is met, and then the UE may send an RRCReconfigurationComplete message to Cell 2 when the configured CHO execution condition for Cell 2 is met. The UE releases stored CHO configurations after successful completion of the RRC handover procedure.

[0226] Additionally or alternatively, the UE may stop RLF detection when the UE detaches from Cell 1 and at least until the UE tries to send an RRCReconfigurationComplete message to Cell 2.

[0227] Additionally or alternatively, the UE may suspend RLF detection from time t1 until time t2, when good coverage from cell 2 is predicted to be available.

[0228] Additionally or alternatively, the UE may suspend UL data transmission and hold UL data in a buffer during the silent time window (i.e., from time t1 to time t2) , for example for some non-delay sensitive DRBs or for some specific DRBs or for all DRBs. The UE may notify the network of such UL transmission suspension for the affected DRBs.

[0229] Additionally or alternatively, the UE may try to send an RRCReconfiguratoinComplete message to Cell 2 after (including) time t2 even if the configured condition event for Cell 2 is not met. In another example, the UE may try to send an RRCReconfigurationComplete message to Cell 2 after the timer (e.g., Δt) expires even if the configured condition event for Cell 2 is not met.

[0230] Additionally or alternatively, the UE may try RRC Connection Reestablishment with other cells if the configured condition event for Cell 2 is not met for example after (including) time t2. In another example, the UE may try RRC Connection Reestablishment with other cells if the configured condition event for Cell 2 is not me for example after the timer (e.g., Δt) expires.

[0231] Additionally or alternatively, the network may move the UE to RRC inactive mode or RRC idle mode during the silent time window (i.e., from time t1 to time t2) , and the UE may stop RLF detection or temporally suspend RLF detection during the silent time window, and the UE may not try RRC Reestablishment during the silent time window. The UE may suspend some or all of the DRBs in use during the silent time window. That is, no UL and / or DL data / traffic may be signaled for the suspended DRBs. The UE may notify the network node of such suspension for the affected DRBs.

[0232] Additionally or alternatively, the network node, as a source gNB (i.e., gNB of Cell 1) , may send a CHO request message to a candidate target gNB of Cell 2 about potential handover after deciding to use this configuration of CHO for the UE, and then the source gNB may receive a corresponding CHO response (i.e., HO Request Acknowledge) from the candidate target gNB, and then the source gNB may send an RRCReconfiguraton message to the UE containing the CHO configuration.

[0233] In an example, the prediction of time t1 and time t2 above is based on the fluctuation of the radio link signal quality of the related cells (e.g. Cell 1, Cell 2) . For example, if the fluctuation of the radio link quality of Cell 2 is higher than one certain threshold, then another cell (e.g. Cell 3) with more stable radio link signal quality may be selected as the target cell for handover purpose. The network may send the configuration parameters regarding the cell selection, where the configuration parameters may explicitly or implicitly indicate fluctuation requirements of radio link signal quality of selected cell (s) and may explicitly or implicitly indicate relaxed parameters for cell selection for example to meet the fluctuation requirements. In another solution, the prediction of time t1 and time t2 above may be extended with the consideration of the fluctuation of the radio link signal quality of the related cell (s) , and this extension may increase the time difference between time t1 and time t2.

[0234] In an example, the time t1 and the time t2 above may be determined with an additional consideration of fluctuation of the radio link signal quality of the related cell (s) (e.g., Cell 1 and Cell 2) . For example, if the fluctuation of the radio link quality of Cell 2 is higher than a certain threshold, then another cell (e.g., Cell 3) with more stable radio link signal quality may be selected as the target cell for handover purpose. The network node may send configuration parameters regarding cell selection to the UE, where the configuration parameters may explicitly or implicitly indicate fluctuation requirements of radio link signal quality of the selected cell (s) and may explicitly or implicitly indicate relaxed parameters for cell selection, for example, to meet the fluctuation requirements. In another example, the time t1 and the time t2 above may be extended with consideration of the fluctuation of the radio link signal quality of the related cell (s) , and this extension may increase the time difference between time t1 and time t2. For example, the fluctuation of the radio link quality of a cell may be defined based on at least one of a minimum amplitude drift and a maximum amplitude drift from the mean value of a reference signal. In an example, the fluctuation of the radio link quality of a cell during a time period (or at a time instance) may be defined as the maximum amplitude drift of the radio link quality of the cell during this time period (or at a time instance) minus the minimum amplitude drift of the radio link quality of the cell during this time period (or at a time instance) . In another example, the fluctuation may be defined as an autocorrelation or Fourier transform or Sine / Cosine of the radio link quality of the cell during a time period (or at a time instance) .

[0235] Referring to Fig. 3B, a UE or a network node serving the UE predicts that, radio link quality between a serving cell (i.e., Cell 1) and the UE will be below a first absolute threshold (i.e., th1) after time t1 and the radio link quality will be below a second absolute threshold (i.e. th2) before (including) time t2 (and will be above th2 after t2) . The UE or the network node may also predict that there will be no suitable target cell with good enough radio link quality for the UE for handover purpose and / or for data transmission purpose during the time period between t1 and t2. The time period between t1 and t2 is referred to as “silent time window” .

[0236] In case of UE side prediction, the UE may report the prediction information to the network node via one or more messages at the same time instance or at different time instances. Alternatively, the prediction above may be done by the network node at the network side. The prediction here may be based on AI or non-AI or AI plus non-AI.

[0237] In an example, upon deriving the above prediction, the UE may further receive a configuration (e.g., via RRC signaling or via Medium Access Control (MAC) signaling or via DCI signaling) from the network node. The configuration may explicitly or implicitly indicate that the UE is to perform at least one of the following actions:

[0238] - suspending or stopping RLF detection during the silent time window,

[0239] - suspending UL data transmission and holding UL data in a buffer during the silent time window, for example for some non-delay sensitive applications, and possibly notifying such UL suspension to the network node,

[0240] - suspending one or more DRBs during the silent time window, i.e., not transmitting or receiving data for such DRBs, and possibly notifying such suspension to the network node for the affected DRBs,

[0241] - moving to and / or staying in RRC inactive mode or idle mode during the silent time window,

[0242] - suspending RRC Connection Reestablishment functionality during the silent time window,

[0243] - restarting RLF detection after the silent time window,

[0244] - continue on-going RLF detection after the silent time window,

[0245] - restarting RRC Connection Reestablishment functionality after the silent time window,

[0246] - sending information to the network node (e.g., serving cell) , for example in some specific time-frequency resources, after the silent time window, and

[0247] - continuing connection with the serving cell after silent time window for signal / data transmission.

[0248] Furthermore, the network node may send paging signaling to the UE after the silent time window.

[0249] The use of the silent time window can, to some extent, avoid problems such as RLF, HOF, ping-pong handover, short time of stay handover, and the like, and save UE and network resources.

[0250] Referring to Fig. 3C, a UE or a network node serving the UE predicts that at least two or more of following events will occur:

[0251] - a first event triggered at time t1, for example, the radio link quality between Cell 3 and the UE is a first offset better than the radio link quality between Cell 1 and the UE at a time instance or after a time instance or for a given time duration,

[0252] - a second event triggered at time t2, for example, the radio link quality between Cell 2 and the UE is better than a threshold, and

[0253] - a third event triggered at time t3, for example, the radio link quality between Cell 2 and the UE is a second offset better than the radio link quality between the Cell 3 and the UE at a time instance or after a time instance or for a given time duration.

[0254] In case of UE side prediction, the UE may report the prediction information to the network node via one or more messages at the same time instance or at different time instances. Alternatively, the prediction above may be done by the network node at the network side. The prediction here may be based on AI or non-AI or AI plus non-AI. The first offset may or may not be same as the second offset.

[0255] In an example, upon deriving the above prediction, the UE may receive configuration information from the network node. The configuration information may explicitly or implicitly indicate a conditional handover configuration (e.g., in RRCReconfiguration message) . Then the UE may send the corresponding RRCReconfigurationComplete message to the network node no later than time t1. The conditional handover configuration includes one or more events.

[0256] In an example, the conditional handover configuration may include one or more conditional events of:

[0257] - CondEvent X-1: The first conditional reconfiguration candidate (e.g. Cell 3) becomes offset better than the serving cell (e.g. Cell 1) , and

[0258] - CondEvent X-2: The second conditional reconfiguration candidate (e.g. Cell 2) becomes offset better than the first conditional reconfiguration candidate (e.g. Cell 3) .

[0259] The conditional handover configuration may indicate that Cell 3 is a transit cell in a transit time window (e.g., from time t1 to time t2) for handover from the serving cell (e.g., Cell 1) to the target cell (e.g., Cell 2) .

[0260] The configuration may explicitly or implicitly indicate that the UE is to perform at least one of the following actions:

[0261] - sending first information to Cell 3 via a first time-frequency resource (e.g., at time t1) , the first information explicitly or implicitly indicating transit complete;

[0262] - sending second information to Cell 2 at a second time-frequency resource (e.g., at time t2) , the second information explicitly or implicitly indicating handover complete;

[0263] - communicating data with Cell 3 during a time period (e.g., after (including) sending the first information to Cell 3 but before sending the second information to Cell 2) ;

[0264] - communicating data with Cell 2 after (including) sending the second information to Cell 2;

[0265] - if the UE is unable to transmit data to Cell 3 or receive data from Cell 3 during the transit time window, then within the transit time window:

[0266] -- switching to RRC inactive mode or RRC idle mode,

[0267] -- stopping RLF detection or temporally suspending RLF detection during the transit time window, and

[0268] -- refraining from trying RRC Reestablishment.

[0269] Accordingly, the UE may perform one or more of the actions configured from the network node.

[0270] In an example, a network node of Cell 3 may send paging signaling to the UE after the transit time window.

[0271] In an example, the network node, as a source gNB (i.e., gNB of Cell 1) , may send a CHO request message to a candidate target gNB of Cell 2 about potential handover after deciding to use this configuration of CHO for the UE, and then the source gNB may receive a corresponding CHO response (i.e., HO Request Acknowledge) from the candidate target gNB, and then the source gNB may send an RRCReconfiguraton message to the UE containing the CHO configuration.

[0272] Additionally or Alternatively, the network node, as a source gNB (i.e., gNB of Cell 1) , may send a CHO request message to the transit target gNB of Cell 3 about potential handover above after deciding to use this configuration of CHO for the UE, and then the source gNB may receive a corresponding CHO response (i.e., HO Request Acknowledge) from the transit target gNB, and then the source gNB may send an RRCReconfiguraton message to the UE containing the CHO configuration.

[0273] The use of the transit time window allows the UE to be handed over to a transit cell, which avoids e.g., RLF of the UE due to long time out-of-coverage, and also reduces signaling overhead and saves UE and network resources.

[0307] The present disclosure also provides at least one computer program product in the form of a non-volatile or volatile memory, e.g., a non-transitory computer readable storage medium, an Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) , a flash memory and a hard drive. The computer program product includes a computer program. The computer program includes: code / computer readable instructions, which when executed by the processing circuitry 420, configure the terminal device 400 to perform the actions, e.g., of the procedure described earlier in conjunction with Fig. 1, or code / computer readable instructions, which when executed by the processing circuitry 520, configure the network node 500 to perform the actions, e.g., of the procedure described earlier in conjunction with Fig. 2.

[0308] The computer program product may be configured as a computer program code structured in computer program modules. The computer program modules could essentially perform the actions of the flow illustrated in Fig. 1 or 2.

[0309] The processing circuitry may be a single CPU (Central Processing Unit) , but could also comprise two or more processing units. For example, the processing circuitry may include general purpose microprocessors; instruction set processors and / or related chips sets and / or special purpose microprocessors such as Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) . The processing circuitry may also comprise board memory for caching purposes. The computer program may be carried in a computer program product connected to the processing circuitry. The computer program product may comprise a non-transitory computer readable storage medium on which the computer program is stored. For example, the computer program product may be a flash memory, a Random Access Memory (RAM) , a Read-Only Memory (ROM) , or an EEPROM, and the computer program modules described above could in alternative embodiments be distributed on different computer program products in the form of memories.

[0310] Fig. 6 shows an example of a communication system 600 in accordance with some embodiments.

[0311] In the example, the communication system 600 includes a telecommunication network 602 that includes an access network 604, such as a radio access network (RAN) , and a core network 606, which includes one or more core network nodes 608. The access network 604 includes one or more access network nodes, such as network nodes 610a and 610b (one or more of which may be generally referred to as network nodes 610) , or any other similar 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) access nodes or non-3GPP access points. Moreover, as will be appreciated by those of skill in the art, a network node is not necessarily limited to an implementation in which a radio portion and a baseband portion are supplied and integrated by a single vendor. Thus, it will be understood that network nodes include disaggregated implementations or portions thereof. For example, in some embodiments, the telecommunication network 602 includes one or more Open-RAN (ORAN) network nodes. An ORAN network node is a node in the telecommunication network 602 that supports an ORAN specification (e.g., a specification published by the O-RAN Alliance, or any similar organization) and may operate alone or together with other nodes to implement one or more functionalities of any node in the telecommunication network 602, including one or more network nodes 610 and / or core network nodes 608.

[0312] Examples of an ORAN network node include an open radio unit (O-RU) , an open distributed unit (O-DU) , an open central unit (O-CU) , including an O-CU control plane (O-CU-CP) or an O-CU user plane (O-CU-UP) , a RAN intelligent controller (near-real time or non-real time) hosting software or software plug-ins, such as a near-real time control application (e.g., xApp) or a non-real time control application (e.g., rApp) , or any combination thereof (the adjective “open” designating support of an ORAN specification) . The network node may support a specification by, for example, supporting an interface defined by the ORAN specification, such as an A1, F1, W1, E1, E2, X2, Xn interface, an open fronthaul user plane interface, or an open fronthaul management plane interface. Moreover, an ORAN access node may be a logical node in a physical node. Furthermore, an ORAN network node may be implemented in a virtualization environment (described further below) in which one or more network functions are virtualized. For example, the virtualization environment may include an O-Cloud computing platform orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an 0-2 interface defined by the O-RAN Alliance or comparable technologies. The network nodes 610 facilitate direct or indirect connection of user equipment (UE) , such as by connecting UEs 612a, 612b, 612c, and 612d (one or more of which may be generally referred to as UEs 612) to the core network 606 over one or more wireless connections.

[0313] Example wireless communications over a wireless connection include transmitting and / or receiving wireless signals using electromagnetic waves, radio waves, infrared waves, and / or other types of signals suitable for conveying information without the use of wires, cables, or other material conductors. Moreover, in different embodiments, the communication system 600 may include any number of wired or wireless networks, network nodes, UEs, and / or any other components or systems that may facilitate or participate in the communication of data and / or signals whether via wired or wireless connections. The communication system 600 may include and / or interface with any type of communication, telecommunication, data, cellular, radio network, and / or other similar type of system.

[0314] The UEs 612 may be any of a wide variety of communication devices, including wireless devices arranged, configured, and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with the network nodes 610 and other communication devices. Similarly, the network nodes 610 are arranged, capable, configured, and / or operable to communicate directly or indirectly with the UEs 612 and / or with other network nodes or equipment in the telecommunication network 602 to enable and / or provide network access, such as wireless network access, and / or to perform other functions, such as administration in the telecommunication network 602.

[0315] In the depicted example, the core network 606 connects the network nodes 610 to one or more host computing systems, such as host 616. These connections may be direct or indirect via one or more intermediary networks or devices. In other examples, network nodes may be directly coupled to hosts. The core network 606 includes one more core network nodes (e.g., core network node 608) that are structured with hardware and software components. Features of these components may be substantially similar to those described with respect to the UEs, network nodes, and / or hosts, such that the descriptions thereof are generally applicable to the corresponding components of the core network node 608. Example core network nodes include functions of one or more of a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) , Mobility Management Entity (MME) , Home Subscriber Server (HSS) , Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) , Session Management Function (SMF) , Authentication Server Function (AUSF) , Subscription Identifier De-concealing function (SIDF) , Unified Data Management (UDM) , Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP) , Network Exposure Function (NEF) , and / or a User Plane Function (UPF) .

[0316] The host 616 may be under the ownership or control of a service provider other than an operator or provider of the access network 604 and / or the telecommunication network 602. The host 616 may host a variety of applications to provide one or more service. Examples of such applications include live and pre-recorded audio / video content, data collection services such as retrieving and compiling data on various ambient conditions detected by a plurality of UEs, analytics functionality, social media, functions for controlling or otherwise interacting with remote devices, functions for an alarm and surveillance center, or any other such function performed by a server.

[0317] As a whole, the communication system 600 of Fig. 6 enables connectivity between the UEs, network nodes, and hosts. In that sense, the communication system may be configured to operate according to predefined rules or procedures, such as specific standards that include, but are not limited to: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) ; Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) ; Long Term Evolution (LTE) , and / or other suitable 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G standards, or any applicable future generation standard (e.g., 6G) ; wireless local area network (WLAN) standards, such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standards (WiFi) ; and / or any other appropriate wireless communication standard, such as the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) , Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Near Field Communication (NFC) ZigBee, LiFi, and / or any low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) standards such as LoRa and Sigfox.

[0318] In some examples, the telecommunication network 602 is a cellular network that implements 3GPP standardized features. Accordingly, the telecommunications network 602 may support network slicing to provide different logical networks to different devices that are connected to the telecommunication network 602. For example, the telecommunications network 602 may provide Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) services to some UEs, while providing Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services to other UEs, and / or Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC)  / Massive IoT services to yet further UEs.

[0319] In some examples, the UEs 612 are configured to transmit and / or receive information without direct human interaction. For instance, a UE may be designed to transmit information to the access network 604 on a predetermined schedule, when triggered by an internal or external event, or in response to requests from the access network 604. Additionally, a UE may be configured for operating in single-or multi-RAT or multi-standard mode. For example, a UE may operate with any one or combination of Wi-Fi, NR (New Radio) and LTE, i.e. being configured for multi-radio dual connectivity (MR-DC) , such as E-UTRAN (Evolved-UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) New Radio -Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) .

[0320] In the example, the hub 614 communicates with the access network 604 to facilitate indirect communication between one or more UEs (e.g., UE 612c and / or 612d) and network nodes (e.g., network node 61 Ob) . In some examples, the hub 614 may be a controller, router, content source and analytics, or any of the other communication devices described herein regarding UEs. For example, the hub 614 may be a broadband router enabling access to the core network 606 for the UEs. As another example, the hub 614 may be a controller that sends commands or instructions to one or more actuators in the UEs. Commands or instructions may be received from the UEs, network nodes 610, or by executable code, script, process, or other instructions in the hub 614. As another example, the hub 614 may be a data collector that acts as temporary storage for UE data and, in some embodiments, may perform analysis or other processing of the data. As another example, the hub 614 may be a content source. For example, for a UE that is a VR device, display, loudspeaker, or other media delivery device, the hub 614 may retrieve VR assets, video, audio, or other media or data related to sensory information via a network node, which the hub 614 then provides to the UE either directly, after performing local processing, and / or after adding additional local content. In still another example, the hub 614 acts as a proxy server or orchestrator for the UEs, in particular if one or more of the UEs are low energy IoT devices.

[0321] The hub 614 may have a constant / persistent or intermittent connection to the network node 610b. The hub 614 may also allow for a different communication scheme and / or schedule between the hub 614 and UEs (e.g., UE 612c and / or 612d) , and between the hub 614 and the core network 606. In other examples, the hub 614 is connected to the core network 606 and / or one or more UEs via a wired connection. Moreover, the hub 614 may be configured to connect to an M2M service provider over the access network 604 and / or to another UE over a direct connection. In some scenarios, UEs may establish a wireless connection with the network nodes 610 while still connected via the hub 614 via a wired or wireless connection. In some embodiments, the hub 614 may be a dedicated hub -that is, a hub whose primary function is to route communications to / from the UEs from / to the network node 61 Ob. In other embodiments, the hub 614 may be a non-dedicated hub -that is, a device which is capable of operating to route communications between the UEs and network node 61 Ob, but which is additionally capable of operating as a communication start and / or end point for certain data channels.

[0322] Fig. 7 shows a UE 700 in accordance with some embodiments. The UE 700 presents additional details of some embodiments of the UE 612 of Fig. 6. As used herein, a UE refers to a device capable, configured, arranged and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with network nodes and / or other UEs. Examples of a UE include, but are not limited to, a smart phone, mobile phone, cell phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phone, wireless local loop phone, desktop computer, personal digital assistant (PDA) , wireless cameras, gaming console or device, music storage / playback device, wearable terminal device, wireless endpoint, mobile station, tablet, laptop, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , an Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR) device, wireless customer-premise equipment (CPE) , vehicle, vehicle-mounted or vehicle embedded / integrated wireless device, etc. Other examples include any UE identified by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) , including a narrow band internet of things (NB-IoT) UE, a machine type communication (MTC) UE, and / or an enhanced MTC (eMTC) UE.

[0333] Regardless of the type of sensor, a UE may provide an output of data captured by its sensors, through its communication interface 712, via a wireless connection to a network node. Data captured by sensors of a UE can be communicated through a wireless connection to a network node via another UE. The output may be periodic (e.g., once every 15 minutes if it reports the sensed temperature) , random (e.g., to even out the load from reporting from several sensors) , in response to a triggering event (e.g., when moisture is detected an alert is sent) , in response to a request (e.g., a user initiated request) , or a continuous stream (e.g., a live video feed of a patient) .

[0334] As another example, a UE comprises an actuator, a motor, or a switch, related to a communication interface configured to receive wireless input from a network node via a wireless connection. In response to the received wireless input the states of the actuator, the motor, or the switch may change. For example, the UE may comprise a motor that adjusts the control surfaces or rotors of a drone in flight according to the received input or to a robotic arm performing a medical procedure according to the received input.

[0335] AUE, when in the form of an Internet of Things (IoT) device, may be a device for use in one or more application domains, these domains comprising, but not limited to, city wearable technology, extended industrial application and healthcare. Non-limiting examples of such an IoT device are a device which is or which is embedded in: a connected refrigerator or freezer, a TV, a connected lighting device, an electricity meter, a robot vacuum cleaner, a voice controlled smart speaker, a home security camera, a motion detector, a thermostat, a smoke detector, a door / window sensor, a flood / moisture sensor, an electrical door lock, a connected doorbell, an air conditioning system like a heat pump, an autonomous vehicle, a surveillance system, a weather monitoring device, a vehicle parking monitoring device, an electric vehicle charging station, a smart watch, a fitness tracker, a wearable for tactile augmentation or sensory enhancement, a water sprinkler, an animal-or item-tracking device, a sensor for monitoring a plant or animal, an industrial robot, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) , and any kind of medical device, like a heart rate monitor or a remote controlled surgical robot. A UE in the form of an IoT device comprises circuitry and / or software in dependence of the intended application of the IoT device in addition to other components as described in relation to the UE 700 shown in Fig. 7.

[0336] As yet another specific example, in an IoT scenario, a UE may represent a machine or other device that performs monitoring and / or measurements, and transmits the results of such monitoring and / or measurements to another UE and / or a network node. The UE may in this case be an M2M device, which may in a 3GPP context be referred to as an MTC device. As one particular example, the UE may implement the 3GPP NB-IoT standard. In other scenarios, a UE may represent a vehicle, such as a car, a bus, a truck, a ship and an airplane, or other equipment that is capable of monitoring and / or reporting on its operational status or other functions associated with its operation.

[0337] In practice, any number of UEs may be used together with respect to a single use case. For example, a first UE might be or be integrated in a drone and provide the drone’s speed information (obtained through a speed sensor) to a second UE that is a remote controller operating the drone. When the user makes changes from the remote controller, the first UE may adjust the throttle on the drone (e.g. by controlling an actuator) to increase or decrease the drone’s speed. The first and / or the second UE can also include more than one of the functionalities described above. For example, a UE might comprise the sensor and the actuator, and handle communication of data for both the speed sensor and the actuators.

[0338] Fig. 8 shows a network node 800 in accordance with some embodiments. As used herein, network node refers to equipment capable, configured, arranged and / or operable to communicate directly or indirectly with a UE and / or with other network nodes or equipment, in a telecommunication network. Examples of network nodes include, but are not limited to, access points (APs) (e.g., radio access points) , base stations (BSs) (e.g., radio base stations, Node Bs, evolved Node Bs (eNBs) and NR NodeBs (gNBs) ) , O-RAN nodes or components of an O-RAN node (e.g., O-RU, O-DU, O-CU) .

[0339] Base stations may be categorized based on the amount of coverage they provide (or, stated differently, their transmit power level) and so, depending on the provided amount of coverage, may be referred to as femto base stations, pico base stations, micro base stations, or macro base stations. A base station may be a relay node or a relay donor node controlling a relay. A network node may also include one or more (or all) parts ora distributed radio base station such as centralized digital units, distributed units (e.g., in an O-RAN access node) and / or remote radio units (RRUs) , sometimes referred to as Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) . Such remote radio units may or may not be integrated with an antenna as an antenna integrated radio. Parts of a distributed radio base station may also be referred to as nodes in a distributed antenna system (DAS) .

[0340] Other examples of network nodes include multiple transmission point (multi-TRP) 5G access nodes, multi-standard radio (MSR) equipment such as MSR BSs, network controllers such as radio network controllers (RNCs) or base station controllers (BSCs) , base transceiver stations (BTSs) , transmission points, transmission nodes, multi-cell / multicast coordination entities (MCEs) , Operation and Maintenance (O&M) nodes, Operations Support System (OSS) nodes, Self-Organizing Network (SON) nodes, positioning nodes (e.g., Evolved Serving Mobile Location Centers (E-SMLCs) ) , and / or Minimization of Drive Tests (MDTs) .

[0341] The network node 800 includes a processing circuitry 802, a memory 804, a communication interface 806, and a power source 808. The network node 800 may be composed of multiple physically separate components (e.g., a NodeB component and a RNC component, or a BTS component and a BSC component, etc. ) , which may each have their own respective components. In certain scenarios in which the network node 800 comprises multiple separate components (e.g., BTS and BSC components) , one or more of the separate components may be shared among several network nodes. For example, a single RNC may control multiple NodeBs. In such a scenario, each unique NodeB and RNC pair, may in some instances be considered a single separate network node. In some embodiments, the network node 800 may be configured to support multiple radio access technologies (RATs) . In such embodiments, some components may be duplicated (e.g., separate memory 804 for different RATs) and some components may be reused (e.g., a same antenna 810 may be shared by different RATs) . The network node 800 may also include multiple sets of the various illustrated components for different wireless technologies integrated into network node 800, for example GSM, WCDMA, LTE, NR, WiFi, Zigbee, Z-wave, LoRaWAN, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) or Bluetooth wireless technologies. These wireless technologies may be integrated into the same or different chip or set of chips and other components within network node 800.

[0342] The processing circuitry 802 may comprise a combination of one or more of a microprocessor, controller, microcontroller, central processing unit, digital signal processor, application-specific integrated circuit, field programmable gate array, or any other suitable computing device, resource, or combination of hardware, software and / or encoded logic operable to provide, either alone or in conjunction with other network node 800 components, such as the memory 804, to provide network node 800 functionality.

[0343] In some embodiments, the processing circuitry 802 includes a system on a chip (SOC) . In some embodiments, the processing circuitry 802 includes one or more of radio frequency (RF) transceiver circuitry 812 and baseband processing circuitry 814. In some embodiments, the radio frequency (RF) transceiver circuitry 812 and the baseband processing circuitry 814 may be on separate chips (or sets of chips) , boards, or units, such as radio units and digital units. In alternative embodiments, part or all of RF transceiver circuitry 812 and baseband processing circuitry 814 may be on the same chip or set of chips, boards, or units.

[0344] The memory 804 may comprise any form of volatile or non-volatile computer-readable memory including, without limitation, persistent storage, solid-state memory, remotely mounted memory, magnetic media, optical media, random access memory (RAM) , read-only memory (ROM) , mass storage media (for example, a hard disk) , removable storage media (for example, a flash drive, a Compact Disk (CD) or a Digital Video Disk (DVD) ) , and / or any other volatile or non-volatile, non-transitory device-readable and / or computer-executable memory devices that store information, data, and / or instructions that may be used by the processing circuitry 802. The memory 804 may store any suitable instructions, data, or information, including a computer program, software, an application including one or more of logic, rules, code, tables, and / or other instructions capable of being executed by the processing circuitry 802 and utilized by the network node 800. The memory 804 may be used to store any calculations made by the processing circuitry 802 and / or any data received via the communication interface 806. In some embodiments, the processing circuitry 802 and memory 804 is integrated.

[0345] The communication interface 806 is used in wired or wireless communication of signaling and / or data between a network node, access network, and / or UE. As illustrated, the communication interface 806 comprises port (s)  / terminal (s) 816 to send and receive data, for example to and from a network over a wired connection. The communication interface 806 also includes radio front-end circuitry 818 that may be coupled to, or in certain embodiments a part of, the antenna 810. Radio front-end circuitry 818 comprises filters 820 and amplifiers 822. The radio front-end circuitry 818 may be connected to an antenna 810 and processing circuitry 802. The radio front-end circuitry may be configured to condition signals communicated between antenna 810 and processing circuitry 802. The radio front-end circuitry 818 may receive digital data that is to be sent out to other network nodes or UEs via a wireless connection. The radio front-end circuitry 818 may convert the digital data into a radio signal having the appropriate channel and bandwidth parameters using a combination of filters 820 and / or amplifiers 822. The radio signal may then be transmitted via the antenna 810. Similarly, when receiving data, the antenna 810 may collect radio signals which are then converted into digital data by the radio front-end circuitry 818. The digital data may be passed to the processing circuitry 802. In other embodiments, the communication interface may comprise different components and / or different combinations of components.

[0346] In certain alternative embodiments, the network node 800 does not include separate radio front-end circuitry 818, instead, the processing circuitry 802 includes radio front-end circuitry and is connected to the antenna 810. Similarly, in some embodiments, all or some of the RF transceiver circuitry 812 is part of the communication interface 806. In still other embodiments, the communication interface 806 includes one or more ports or terminals 816, the radio front-end circuitry 818, and the RF transceiver circuitry 812, as part of a radio unit (not shown) , and the communication interface 806 communicates with the baseband processing circuitry 814, which is part of a digital unit (not shown) .

[0347] The antenna 810 may include one or more antennas, or antenna arrays, configured to send and / or receive wireless signals. The antenna 810 may be coupled to the radio front-end circuitry 818 and may be any type of antenna capable of transmitting and receiving data and / or signals wirelessly. In certain embodiments, the antenna 810 is separate from the network node 800 and connectable to the network node 800 through an interface or port.

[0348] The antenna 810, communication interface 806, and / or the processing circuitry 802 may be configured to perform any receiving operations and / or certain obtaining operations described herein as being performed by the network node. Any information, data and / or signals may be received from a UE, another network node and / or any other network equipment. Similarly, the antenna 810, the communication interface 806, and / or the processing circuitry 802 may be configured to perform any transmitting operations described herein as being performed by the network node. Any information, data and / or signals may be transmitted to a UE, another network node and / or any other network equipment.

[0349] The power source 808 provides power to the various components of network node 800 in a form suitable for the respective components (e.g., at a voltage and current level needed for each respective component) . The power source 808 may further comprise, or be coupled to, power management circuitry to supply the components of the network node 800 with power for performing the functionality described herein. For example, the network node 800 may be connectable to an external power source (e.g., the power grid, an electricity outlet) via an input circuitry or interface such as an electrical cable, whereby the external power source supplies power to power circuitry of the power source 808. As a further example, the power source 808 may comprise a source of power in the form of a battery or battery pack which is connected to, or integrated in, power circuitry. The battery may provide backup power should the external power source fail.

[0350] Embodiments of the network node 800 may include additional components beyond those shown in Fig. 8 for providing certain aspects of the network node’s functionality, including any of the functionality described herein and / or any functionality necessary to support the subject matter described herein. For example, the network node 800 may include user interface equipment to allow input of information into the network node 800 and to allow output of information from the network node 800. This may allow a user to perform diagnostic, maintenance, repair, and other administrative functions for the network node 800. In some embodiments providing a core network node, such as core network node 108 of FIG. 6, some components, such as the radio front-end circuitry 818 and the RF transceiver circuitry 812 may be omitted.

[0351] Fig. 9 is a block diagram illustrating a virtualization environment 900 in which functions implemented by some embodiments may be virtualized. In the present context, virtualizing means creating virtual versions of apparatuses or devices which may include virtualizing hardware platforms, storage devices and networking resources. As used herein, virtualization can be applied to any device described herein, or components thereof, and relates to an implementation in which at least a portion of the functionality is implemented as one or more virtual components. Some or all of the functions described herein may be implemented as virtual components executed by one or more virtual machines (VMs) implemented in one or more virtual environments 900 hosted by one or more of hardware nodes, such as a hardware computing device that operates as a network node, UE, core network node, or host. Further, in embodiments in which the virtual node does not require radio connectivity (e.g., a core network node or host) , then the node may be entirely virtualized. In some embodiments, the virtualization environment 900 includes components defined by the O-RAN Alliance, such as an O-Cloud environment orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an 0-2 interface. Virtualization may facilitate distributed implementations of a network node, UE, core network node, or host.

[0352] Applications 902 (which may alternatively be called software instances, virtual appliances, network functions, virtual nodes, virtual network functions, etc. ) are run in the virtualization environment 900 to implement some of the features, functions, and / or benefits of some of the embodiments disclosed herein.

[0353] Hardware 904 includes processing circuitry, memory that stores software and / or instructions executable by hardware processing circuitry, and / or other hardware devices as described herein, such as a network interface, input / output interface, and so forth. Software may be executed by the processing circuitry to instantiate one or more virtualization layers 906 (also referred to as hypervisors or virtual machine monitors (VMMs) ) , provide VMs 908a and 908b (one or more of which may be generally referred to as VMs 908) , and / or perform any of the functions, features and / or benefits described in relation with some embodiments described herein. The virtualization layer 906 may present a virtual operating platform that appears like networking hardware to the VMs 908.

[0354] The VMs 908 comprise virtual processing, virtual memory, virtual networking or interface and virtual storage, and may be run by a corresponding virtualization layer 906. Different embodiments of the instance of a virtual appliance 902 may be implemented on one or more of VMs 908, and the implementations may be made in different ways. Virtualization of the hardware is in some contexts referred to as network function virtualization (NFV) . NFV may be used to consolidate many network equipment types onto industry standard high volume server hardware, physical switches, and physical storage, which can be located in data centers, and customer premise equipment.

[0355] In the context ofNFV, a VM 908 may be a software implementation of a physical machine that runs programs as if they were executing on a physical, non-virtualized machine. Each of the VMs 908, and that part of hardware 904 that executes that VM, be it hardware dedicated to that VM and / or hardware shared by that VM with others of the VMs, forms separate virtual network elements. Still in the context ofNFV, a virtual network function is responsible for handling specific network functions that run in one or more VMs 908 on top of the hardware 904 and corresponds to the application 902.

[0356] Hardware 904 may be implemented in a standalone network node with generic or specific components. Hardware 904 may implement some functions via virtualization. Alternatively, hardware 904 may be part of a larger cluster of hardware (e.g. such as in a data center or CPE) where many hardware nodes work together and are managed via management and orchestration 910, which, among others, oversees lifecycle management of applications 902. In some embodiments, hardware 904 is coupled to one or more radio units that each include one or more transmitters and one or more receivers that may be coupled to one or more antennas. Radio units may communicate directly with other hardware nodes via one or more appropriate network interfaces and may be used in combination with the virtual components to provide a virtual node with radio capabilities, such as a radio access node or a base station. In some embodiments, some signaling can be provided with the use of a control system 912 which may alternatively be used for communication between hardware nodes and radio units.

[0357] Although the computing devices described herein (e.g., UEs, network nodes) may include the illustrated combination of hardware components, other embodiments may comprise computing devices with different combinations of components. It is to be understood that these computing devices may comprise any suitable combination of hardware and / or software needed to perform the tasks, features, functions and methods disclosed herein. Determining, calculating, obtaining or similar operations described herein may be performed by processing circuitry, which may process information by, for example, converting the obtained information into other information, comparing the obtained information or converted information to information stored in the network node, and / or performing one or more operations based on the obtained information or converted information, and as a result of said processing making a determination. Moreover, while components are depicted as single boxes located within a larger box, or nested within multiple boxes, in practice, computing devices may comprise multiple different physical components that make up a single illustrated component, and functionality may be partitioned between separate components. For example, a communication interface may be configured to include any of the components described herein, and / or the functionality of the components may be partitioned between the processing circuitry and the communication interface. In another example, non-computationally intensive functions of any of such components may be implemented in software or firmware and computationally intensive functions may be implemented in hardware.

[0358] In certain embodiments, some or all of the functionality described herein may be provided by processing circuitry executing instructions stored on in memory, which in certain embodiments may be a computer program product in the form of a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium. In alternative embodiments, some or all of the functionality may be provided by the processing circuitry without executing instructions stored on a separate or discrete device-readable storage medium, such as in a hard-wired manner. In any of those particular embodiments, whether executing instructions stored on a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium or not, the processing circuitry can be configured to perform the described functionality. The benefits provided by such functionality are not limited to the processing circuitry alone or to other components of the computing device, but are enjoyed by the computing device as a whole, and / or by end users and a wireless network generally.

[0359] The disclosure has been described above with reference to embodiments thereof. It should be understood that various modifications, alternations and additions can be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirits and scope of the disclosure. Therefore, the scope of the disclosure is not limited to the above particular embodiments but only defined by the claims as attached.
