[0002] According to the prior art, electro-pneumatic massage systems, e.g. for vehicle seats, are known. Such a device comprises at least one air cushion, an air supply system, which in particular comprises a pneumatic pump, as well as a valve and a valve control unit to control the supply of air to and the discharge of air from the air cushion. Such a massage system is known e.g. from DE 100 63 478 A1. Such a massage system may be combined with a lumbar support system.

[0003] Furthermore, DE 10 2011 079 712 A1 discloses a pneumatic device for generating and transmitting pressure vibrations to the human body via an air cushion. It is provided with a pressure generator, a pressure line between the pressure generator and the air cushion, and a control unit. US 5 155 685 A describes a seat with a seat-shaping device that is controlled based on an assessment of the occupant's build. JP 2005-168 953 A discloses a device that enables the cyclical pressurization of air cushions for the treatment of an occupant.

[0004] A massage device for a seat, in particular for a vehicle seat, is known from DE 10 2019 113 629 A1, which comprises at least one air cushion, wherein the at least one air cushion has an air inlet to be individually filled with air via an air supply system, wherein a vibration generator is arranged between the air supply system and the air cushion and is fluidically connected to the air cushion in order to apply a pressure vibration to the air cushion. Another massage device is known from WO 2020 / 233 868 A1.

[0005] In the known systems, the muscles of the user (occupant) of the seat are stimulated by stretching, pulling and pressing in order to increase the physical comfort of the user and counteract the development of tensions during long periods of seat use.

[0006] It is the object of the present invention to provide an alternative solution for generating a massage. In particular, the device is intended to be suitable for generating a tapping massage with an intermediate frequency.

[0007] It is a further object of the present invention to provide a method for such a massage.

[0008] The object of the present invention is achieved by the features of claim 1 with respect to the massage device, and by the features of claim 15 with respect to the seat and by the features of claim 18 with respect to the method. Expedient embodiments result from the respective dependent claims.

[0009] The massage device according to the present invention usable for a seat, in particular a vehicle seat, comprises at least one air cushion, wherein the at least one air cushion has an air inlet so as to allow individual filling thereof with air via an air supply system,

[0010] wherein the air supply system comprises a first valve and at least one second valve as well as a supply line, wherein the first valve and the second valve are switched in series in the supply line, wherein each second valve is connected to a respective air inlet of an air cushion,

[0011] wherein the first valve is configured for a first switching frequency and the second valve is configured for a second switching frequency which is lower than the first switching frequency.

[0012] The massage device might be provided with a plurality of second valves, wherein each of the second valves is associated with one individual air cushion, such that the filling of the individual air cushion can be controlled by the switching of the respective second valve.

[0013] The first valve is provided with a first inlet and a first outlet, wherein for filling the air cushions compressed air flows through the first valve from the first inlet to the first outlet. If air can flow through the first valve from the first inlet to the first outlet, the first valve is called open.

[0014] The second valve is provided with a first inlet and a first outlet, wherein for filling the air cushion compressed air flows through the second valve from the first inlet to the first outlet. If air can flow through the second valve from the first inlet to the first outlet, the second valve is called open.

[0015] According to one embodiment, the first valve is an electromagnetic valve. The first valve might be provided with a first valve control unit.

[0016] According to one embodiment, the first valve is a 3 / 2-way valve, in particular electromagnetic 3 / 2-way valve, having a first inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet, wherein the first inlet and the first outlet are connected to in a first switching position and the first outlet and the second outlet are connected in a second switching position, wherein the first switching position is an open position. The first inlet may be connected to the pump or a compressed air supply, the first outlet may be connected with the one or more second valves and the second outlet may be an outlet of the device, thus to ambient air, or may be connected to an outlet of the device, thus to ambient air. Thus, the 3 / 2-way valve does not have a pressure holding position. If the valve is in the first switching position, it is called open.

[0017] According to one embodiment, the first valve is a normally open valve. A normally open valve is open, if the valve is unpowered, and closed, if the valve is switched ON, thus powered. Such a normally open valve allows for filling the air cushions. In the case of the 3 / 2-way valve as described above, the first valve is in particular in the first switching position, if the valve is switched OFF and in the second switching position, if the valve is switched ON.

[0018] According to one embodiment, the second valve is a shape memory alloy (SMA) valve. If a plurality of air cushions is provided, each of the air cushions is in particular connected to an individual second valve for inflating and deflating the air cushion. Through such in inflation and deflation a massage can be provided, which has typically a frequency of 1 Hz or less. The present massage device may be additionally configured as a lumbar support device, or may be configured for individual contour adaptation of the seat. However, the pressure level in each air cushion might be either kept by constant or pulsed supply of compressed air, in particular if providing a massage using the first valve or the second valve may be provided additionally by a pressure holding function.

[0019] According to one embodiment, the massage device further comprises a pump. Alternatively, the massage device can be provided with an inlet for compressed air. If the massage device comprises a pump, the pump and the first valve may form a supply unit, in particular the supply unit may be provided with a casing, in which the pump and the first valve are accommodated.

[0020] According to one embodiment, the massage device comprises only one first valve which is connected to a plurality of second valves, the second valves being switched in parallel, wherein each of the second valves being connected to the air inlet of one of the air cushions. Such an embodiment allows for a cost efficient implementation of the massage device.

[0028] According to a further aspect of the invention a seat is provided, comprising a massage device as described above.

[0029] According to one embodiment, the massage device is integrated in a backrest and / or a seating surface of the seat.

[0030] According to one embodiment, at least the air cushions are arranged in at least one, in particular at least two, in particular at least four rows.

[0031] According to a further aspect of the invention a massage method is provided in particular using the massage device or the seat as described above. The method comprises:

[0032] -Inflating the at least one air cushion through the first valve and the second valve assigned to the at least one air cushion,

[0050] The massage device further comprises a supply unit 22 comprising a pump 18 and a first valve 12, wherein the first valve 12 and the pump 18 are arranged in a casing 24.The first valve 12 is connected via a supply line 16 to the valve system 15. The first valve 12 is further connected to a silencer 20 being connected to a different outlet of the first valve 12.

[0051] The massage device 2 can be used as follows: The individual air cushions 6 are inflated with the pump 18 through the first valve 12 to the same or individually different filling levels. For some or all the air cushions the air supply is kept in general open through the second valves 14 and the first valve 12 is switched at a first frequency. The switching induces a vibration to the air cushions by the vibration air current through the second valves 14 and the supply lines 16. Some or all of the second valves 14 may be switched additionally at a common second frequency or individually distinct second frequencies, which applies an intermitting vibration on the respective air cushion. Air might be discharged either via an other switching position of the first valve 12 and / or the second valve (s) 14. To reduce the noise of the system the outlet of the first valve 12 to the atmosphere is provided with a silencer 20.

[0052] The present invention has been described herein in an illustrative manner, and it is to be understood that the terminology which has been used is intended to be in the nature of words of description rather than of limitation. Many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in light of the above teachings. The present invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described within the scope of the appended claims. The subject matter of all combinations of independent and dependent claims, both single and multiple dependent, is herein expressly contemplated.
