Description

METHOD AND ELECTRONIC DEVICE OF DETECTING FAILURE OF COMPONENTFIELD

[0001] Example embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of industrial robot, and more particularly, to a method and an electronic device of detecting a failure of a component to allow the user to timely replace a failed component.BACKGROUND

[0002] In the field of industrial robots, as the time goes, the component (s) of the industrial robot may be failed due to various reasons, such as abrasion, fatigue, or breakage, etc. The failure of the component greatly influences the operational efficiency of the industrial robot. The failed component must be replaced with a new one in time to ensure that the industrial robot runs in good condition.

[0003] Conventionally, a variety of approaches are proposed to monitor the health condition of the component to enable the user to know the condition and determine when to replace a failed component. However, these approaches are qualitative, rather than quantitative, so they cannot provide a clear indication of the aging process. Therefore, there is need to improve the approach of determining the health condition of the component.SUMMARY

[0004] In general, example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a method and an electronic device of detecting a failure of a component of industrial robot.

[0005] In a first aspect, there is provided a method of detecting failure of a component. The method comprises measuring operating data in time series at some events in an environment where the component is located; comparing the measured operating data with reference operating data; and determining the failure of the component based on the comparison.

[0006] According to example embodiments, the users are allowed to quantitatively understand the health condition of the component to timely replace the failed component if it is needed.

[0007] In some example embodiments, determining the failure of the component based on the comparison comprises: determining a difference degree of the measured operating data with respect to the reference operating data; and in response to determine that the difference degree is greater than a threshold degree, determining that the component should be replaced.

[0008] In some example embodiments, the method of claim 1, further comprises: upon determining the failure of the component based on the comparison, setting an alarm to a user.

[0009] In some example embodiments, the comparison of the measured operating data and the reference operating data is conducted by similarity calculating algorithm.

[0010] In some example embodiments, the event is a period of time, which occurs repeatedly during the operation of the component, wherein the start and the end of the period of time is triggered by one or more signals.

[0011] In some example embodiments, the reference operating data is determined under identical conditions and operational scenarios when the component is new.

[0012] In a second aspect, there is provided an electronic device detecting failure of a component. The electronic device comprises a measuring module configured to measure operating data in time series at some events in an environment where the component is located; a comparing module configured to compare the measured operating data with reference operating data; and a determining module configured to determine the failure of the component based on the comparison.

[0013] In some example embodiments, the determining module is further configured to: determine a difference degree of the measured operating data with respect to the reference operating data; and in response to determine that the difference degree is greater than a threshold degree, determine that the component should be replaced.

[0014] In some example embodiments, the electronic device further comprises: an alarm module configured to set an alarm to a user upon determining the failure of the component based on the comparison.

[0015] In some example embodiments, the comparison of the measured operating data and the reference operating data is conducted by similarity calculating algorithm.

[0016] In some example embodiments, the event is a period of time, which occurs repeatedly during the operation of the component, wherein the start and the end of the period of time is triggered by one or more signals.

[0017] In some example embodiments, the reference operating data is determined under identical conditions and operational scenarios when the component is new.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0025] Principles of the present disclosure will now be described with reference to some example embodiments. It is to be understood that these embodiments are described only for the purpose of illustration and to help those skilled in the art to understand and implement the present disclosure, without suggesting any limitation as to the scope of the disclosure. The disclosure described herein can be implemented in various manners other than the ones described below.

[0026] In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0027] References in the present disclosure to “one embodiment, ” “an embodiment, ” “an example embodiment, ” and the like indicate that the embodiment described may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, but it is not necessary that every embodiment includes the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. Moreover, such phrases are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in connection with an embodiment, it is submitted that it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to apply such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described.

[0028] It should be understood that although the terms “first” and “second” etc. may be used herein to describe various elements, these elements should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element from another. For example, a first element could be termed a second element, and similarly, a second element could be termed a first element, without departing from the scope of example embodiments. As used herein, the term “and / or” includes any and all combinations of one or more of the listed terms.

[0029] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of example embodiments. As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It will be further understood that the terms “comprises” , “comprising” , “has” , “having” , “includes” and / or “including” , when used herein, specify the presence of stated features, elements, and / or components etc., but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof.

[0030] As described above, the conventional approaches of monitoring the health condition of the component are qualitative, rather than quantitative. At least to address the problem existed in the conventional approaches, the present disclosure proposes a solution employs a method to quantitatively detect component aging or anomalies by comparing the measured operating data to reference operating data, which may allow the user to timely replace the failed component if need to improve after sales service and reduce production loss.

[0031] Example embodiments will be described in more detail hereinafter in accordance with Figs. 1-5. With reference to Fig. 1 at first, which illustrates a schematic diagram of a robotic system 10 in accordance with an example embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0032] As illustrated in Fig. 1, the robotic system 10 includes an industrial robot 110. The industrial robot 110 may be designed to control a tool 111 on a mechanical arm 112 to carry out a variety of actions, for example, a painting operation and machining operations such as a milling operation, a grinding operation, etc. Take the painting operation as an example, in some example embodiments, the tool 111 may be a painting gun which may eject painting fluid onto a surface to be decorated. It is to be understood that this is merely illustrative, rather than restrictive. The industrial robot 110 may be of any type of robot which may carry out a variety of operations, and the specific types of the operations carried out by the industrial robot 10 are not limited in this regard. As shown in Fig. 1, the robot 110 is communicatively coupled to a robot controller 120 and the robot controller 120 is configured to manipulate the movement of the mechanical arm 112 according to the predetermined instructions. With the help of the robot controller 120, the tool 111 mounted to the mechanical arm 112 may be driven to a desired position to carry out the predetermined operation.

[0033] Fig. 2 illustrates a method 200 of detecting a failure of a component in accordance with an example embodiment of the present disclosure. The component may be any component associated to the industrial robot 110, for example, the tool 111 mounted to the mechanical arm 112 or any other components not shown in Fig. 1. It is to be understood that the component is not limited to be used to the industrial robot 110, and it can also be used in other scenarios and other fields. The component may be subject to wear and tear over time, leading to a significant decline in operational efficiency of the industrial robot 110. The following steps may be described by taking a painting robot as an example.

[0034] At block 202, operating data in time series are measured at some events in an environment where the component is located. Fig. 3 illustrates a graph of the operating data in time series in accordance with an example embodiment of the present disclosure, wherein the upper figure represents the reference operating data in time series and the lower figure represents the measured operating data in time series. The measured operating data may be determined in real time by means of sensors provided in the environment with the component is located.

[0035] Take the painting robots as an example, the measured operating data may be the pressure or flow velocity of the painting fluid ejected by the painting gun. The event herein is defined as repeated and important time period during the operation of the industrial robot 110. For example, in some example embodiments, the event may be the switching on of the painting gun. Since the painting gun is switched on many times during its lifetime, the operating data may be measured each time the painting gun is switched on; therefore, the measured operating data can be acquired over time. It is to be understood that this is merely illustrative, rather than restrictive. In other possible examples, the event may be selected by the user according to the actual scenario, for example, the switching off the painting gun or other events. Owing to the fact that the aging of the component will influence the operating data in the space where the component is located, the monitoring of these operating data will be useful in determining the failure of the component.

[0036] In some example embodiments, the event is a period of time, which occurs repeatedly during the operation of the component, wherein the start and the end of the period of time is triggered by one or more signals. In some example embodiments, the start and the end of the period of time may be triggered in an active or direct manner. For example, the start of the period of time may be determined when the signal is transformed from a low level to a high level; while the end of the period of time may be determined when the signal is transformed from a high level to a low level. In other example embodiments, the start and the end of the period of time may be triggered in a passive or indirect manner. For example, the start and the end of the period of time may be determined when a monitoring parameter within the environment meets a predefined threshold.

[0037] At block 204, the measured operating data is compared with the reference operating data. The reference operating data may be determined under identical conditions and operational scenarios through early data. The early data may be obtained when the component is new so the graph of the reference operating data shown in the upper figure of Fig. 3 is relatively smooth and regular. Therefore, the reference operating data represents that the component is in good condition. In some example embodiments, the reference operating data may be determined by obtaining the average value of some events when the component is in good condition. For example, at the first several times the painting gun is switched on, the parameters in the flow field are measured, and these measured operating data are utilized (e.g., averaged) to determine reference operating data.

[0038] The comparison between the measured operating data and the reference operating data may reflect the difference of the component with respect to the component in an “ideal” condition. In some example embodiments, the measured operating data may be compared to the reference operating data by using a variety of similarity calculating algorithms such as Fast DTW, a variant of Dynamic Time Warping. This is solely one possible algorithm to determine the relations between the measured operating data and the reference operating data, other algorithms currently known or to be developed in the future are also possible.

[0039] At block 206, the failure of the component is determined based on the comparison. In some example embodiments, the comparison is conducted by calculating the difference degree between the measured operating data and the reference operating data. As components age, the difference degree increases, indicating a decrease in performance. In response to determine that the difference degree is greater than a threshold degree, it may be determined that the component should be replaced.

[0040] According to example embodiments of the present disclosure, a specific operating data in the environment where the component is located can be monitored and then compared with reference operating data every time the painting gun is turned on and off. If the component is failed, it may cause a large difference between these measured operating data and the reference operating data. Therefore, once it is determined that such a difference degree is greater than a certain threshold, it can be determined that the wear of the component is unacceptable and it needs to be replaced. Since the measured operating data is obtained at plurality of events over time and these events repeatedly appear, the changing profile of the measured operating data over time can be determined to allow the user to quantitatively understand the health condition of the component and know when to replace the failed component.

[0041] In some example embodiments, the method may further include setting an alarm upon determining the failure of the component based on the comparison. In this way, the user may be notified and the failed component can be replaced in time.

[0042] Fig. 4 illustrates a platform showing the flow chart of detecting a failure of a component in accordance with an example embodiment of the present disclosure. At 401, the operating data is determined by repeatedly collecting the time series data under identical conditions and operational scenarios as reference operating data. At 402, the real operating data are measured in time series at some events as measured operating data. At 403, these two sets of data may be compared by a variety of algorithms such as Fast DTW to determine the difference. For example, at 404, it is determined that whether the difference degree between the reference operating data and the measured operating data is greater than the threshold degree. If the result is YES, it can be determined that the component is failed and should be replaced. In this way, the failed component can be replaced in time to reduce the production losses due to equipment replacement.

[0043] In a second aspect, there is provided an electronic device detecting failure of a component. The electronic device comprises a measuring module configured to measure operating data in time series at some events in an environment where the component is located; a comparing module configured to compare the measured operating data with reference operating data; and a determining module configured to determine the failure of the component based on the comparison.

[0044] In some example embodiments, the determining module is further configured to: determine a difference degree of the measured operating data with respect to the reference operating data; and in response to determine that the difference degree is greater than a threshold degree, determine that the component should be replaced.

[0045] In some example embodiments, the electronic device further comprises: an alarm module configured to set an alarm to a user upon determining the failure of the component based on the comparison.

[0046] In some example embodiments, the comparison of the measured operating data and the reference operating data is conducted by Fast DTW.

[0047] In some example embodiments, the event is a period of time, which occurs repeatedly during the operation of the component, wherein the start and the end of the period of time is triggered by one or more signals.

[0048] In some example embodiments, the reference operating data is determined under identical conditions and operational scenarios when the component is new.

[0049] Fig. 5 is a schematic diagram illustrating a device 500 that may be used to implement embodiments of the present disclosure. As illustrated, the device 500 includes a central processing unit (CPU) 501, which may execute various appropriate actions and processing based on the computer program instructions stored in a read-only memory (ROM) 502 or the computer program instructions loaded into a random access memory (RAM) 503 from a storage unit 508. The RAM 503 also stores all kinds of programs and data required by operating the storage device 500. CPU 501, ROM 502 and RAM 503 are connected to each other via a bus 504 to which an input / output (I / O) interface 505 is also connected.

[0050] A plurality of components in the device 500 are connected to the I / O interface 505, including: an input unit 506, such as keyboard, mouse and the like; an output unit 507, such as various types of displays, loudspeakers and the like; a storage unit 508, such as the magnetic disk, optical disk and the like; and a communication unit 509, such as network card, modem, wireless communication transceiver and the like. The communication unit 509 allows the device 500 to exchange information / data with other devices through computer networks such as Internet and / or various telecommunication networks.

[0051] Each procedure and processing described above may be executed by a processing unit 501. For example, in some embodiments, the method may be implemented as computer software programs, which are tangibly included in a machine-readable medium, such as storage unit 508. In some embodiments, the computer program may be partially or completely loaded and / or installed to the device 500 via ROM 502 and / or the communication unit 509. When the computer program is loaded to RAM 503 and executed by CPU 501, one or more steps of the above described method 200 are implemented.

[0055] The computer program instructions for executing the operations of the present disclosure may be assembly instructions, instructions of instruction set architecture (ISA) , machine instructions, machine-related instructions, microcodes, firmware instructions, state setting data, or a source code or target code written by any combinations of one or more programming languages including object-oriented programming languages and conventional procedural programming languages. The computer-readable program instructions may be completely or partially executed on the user computer, or executed as an independent software package, or executed partially on the user computer and partially on the remote computer, or completely executed on the remote computer or the server. In the case where a remote computer is involved, the remote computer may be connected to the user computer by any type of networks, including local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) , or connected to an external computer (such as via Internet provided by the Internet service provider) . In some embodiments, the electronic circuit is customized by using the state information of the computer-readable program instructions. The electronic circuit may be a programmable logic circuit, a field programmable gate array (FPGA) or a programmable logic array (PLA) for example. The electronic circuit may execute computer-readable program instructions to implement various aspects of the present disclosure.

[0056] The computer-readable program instructions may be provided to the processing unit of a general purpose computer, a dedicated computer or other programmable data processing devices to generate a machine, causing the instructions, when executed by the processing unit of the computer or other programmable data processing devices, to generate a device for implementing the functions / actions specified in one or more blocks of the flow chart and / or block diagram. The computer-readable program instructions may also be stored in the computer-readable storage medium. These instructions enable the computer, the programmable data processing device and / or other devices to operate in a particular way, such that the computer-readable medium storing instructions may comprise a manufactured article that includes instructions for implementing various aspects of the functions / actions specified in one or more blocks of the flow chart and / or block diagram.

[0057] The computer-readable program instructions may also be loaded into computers, other programmable data processing devices or other devices, so as to execute a series of operational steps on the computers, other programmable data processing devices or other devices to generate a computer implemented process. Therefore, the instructions executed on the computers, other programmable data processing devices or other devices can realize the functions / actions specified in one or more blocks of the flow chart and / or block diagram.

[0058] The accompanying flow chart and block diagram present possible architecture, functions and operations realized by the system, method and computer program product according to a plurality of embodiments of the present disclosure. At this point, each block in the flow chart or block diagram may represent a module, a program segment, or a portion of the instruction. The module, the program segment or the portion of the instruction includes one or more executable instructions for implementing specified logic functions. In some alternative implementations, the function indicated in the block may also occur in an order different from the one represented in the drawings. For example, two consecutive blocks actually may be executed in parallel, and sometimes they may also be executed in a reverse order depending on the involved functions. It should also be noted that each block in the block diagram and / or flow chart, and any combinations of the blocks thereof may be implemented by a dedicated hardware-based system for implementing specified functions or actions, or a combination of the dedicated hardware and the computer instructions.

[0059] Various embodiments of the present disclosure have been described above, and the above explanation is illustrative rather than exhaustive and is not limited to the disclosed embodiments. Without departing from the scope and spirit of each explained embodiment, many alterations and modifications are obvious for those ordinary skilled in the art. The selection of terms in the text aims to best explain principle, actual application or technical improvement in the market of each embodiment or make each embodiment disclosed in the text comprehensible for those ordinary skilled in the art.

[0060] It is to be understood that although the above disclosure are described by taking the object transferring scenario as examples, this is only for illustration without suggesting any limitations as to the scope of the subject matter described here the above embodiments may be used in other scenarios.

[0061] Further, while operations are depicted in a particular order, this should not be understood as requiring that such operations be performed in the particular order shown or in sequential order, or that all illustrated operations be performed, to achieve desirable results. In certain circumstances, multitasking and parallel processing may be advantageous. Likewise, while several specific implementation details are contained in the above discussions, these should not be construed as limitations on the scope of the present disclosure, but rather as descriptions of features that may be specific to particular embodiments. Certain features that are described in the context of separate embodiments may also be implemented in combination in a single embodiment. On the other hand, various features that are described in the context of a single embodiment may also be implemented in multiple embodiments separately or in any suitable sub-combination.

[0062] Although the subject matter has been described in language specific to structural features and / or methodological acts, it is to be understood that the subject matter defined in the appended claims is not necessarily limited to the specific features or acts described above. Rather, the specific features and acts described above are disclosed as example forms of implementing the claims.
