[0007] Large engines, which can be configured as two-stroke or four-stroke engines, for example, as longitudinally scavenged two-stroke large engines or two-stroke cross-head engines, are often used as drive units for ships, particularly large ships and vessels for the transport of goods, or in stationary operations such as driving large generators for generating electrical energy. The engines usually run for considerable periods in continuous operation, which places high demands on operational safety and availability. As a consequence, particularly long maintenance intervals, low wear, and economical handling of the operating materials are central criteria for the operator. Large engines typically have cylinders with an inner diameter (bore) of at least 200 mm. Nowadays, large engines with a bore of up to 980 mm or even more are used. Within the framework of this application, the term "large engine" designates an internal combustion engine with a bore of the cylinder(s) that is at least 200 mm and preferably at least 300 mm. Engine speed is preferably below 800 RPM, especially for four-stroke engines, and more preferably below 200 RPM for two-stroke engines, which indicates the designation of low-speed engines.
[0008] Large engines are classically configured as large diesel engines, which are operated with heavy fuel oil. The engine can be a diesel or a gas engine, a dual-fuel or a multi-fuel engine. Under the aspects of economic and efficient operation, compliance with exhaust-gas limit values, sustainability, reduction of CO2emissions, and the availability of resources, alternatives to heavy fuel oil are now also being sought for large engines. In this respect, both liquid fuels, i.e., fuels that are introduced into the combustion chamber in the liquid state, and gaseous fuels, i.e., fuels that are introduced into the combustion chamber in the gaseous state, are used.
[0009] Examples of liquid fuels as known alternatives to heavy fuel oil are other heavy hydrocarbons, which are particularly left over as residues from oil refining; alcohols, in particular methanol or ethanol; ammonia; gasoline; diesel; or also emulsions or suspensions such as slurries. Biological fuels, such as oil made from algae or seaweed, HVO (hydro-treated vegetable oil), and FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) based fuels are also possible. For example, it is known to use emulsions known as MSAR (Multiphase Superfine Atomized Residue) as fuel. As gaseous fuels, natural gases such as LNG (liquefied natural gas), liquefied gases such as LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), natural gas (NG), petrol gas (PG), ethane, or hydrogen are known. Further possible fuels comprise LBG (liquefied biogas), hydrogen, ammonia, and synthetic fuels from CO2(e.g., made by Power-To-Gas or Power-To-Liquid processes).

It is also known to concurrently inject the two different fuels into the combustion chamber of the cylinder.

Depending on the fuels, these engines may be operated in a liquid mode, in which a liquid fuel is introduced into the cylinder for combustion, and / or in a gas mode, in which a gas is introduced into the cylinder as fuel.

[0014] In particular, in view of attempts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the reduction of CO2production, and sustainability goals, a reduction in the use of fossil fuels is strived for. Thus, alternatives are investigated to at least reduce or even completely avoid the use of fossil fuels in large engines. Even if this is still a long way off, a partial replacement of fossil fuels by renewable fuels is considered a significant success. One alternative to fossil fuel is, for example, methanol or ammonia. However, such renewable fuels can cause corrosion problems in the fuel distribution and injection system, in particular during standstill of the engine, when the stagnant methanol can corrosively attack the pipes or other components of the fuel injection system. Furthermore, there is the risk that these fuels escape from the engine, e.g., as vapor, into the space which is accessible to engine maintenance or operating personnel. This constitutes a health hazard requiring comprehensive mitigation measures.
[0015] The escaping of gaseous fuel into the atmosphere are usually referred to as fuel slip or fugitive emissions. When methanol or ammonia is used as a fuel in a large engine, most of the methanol or ammonia is consumed in the combustion process. However, some of the fuel remains unburned and may escape into the atmosphere, e.g., by passing through the exhaust gas system of the large engine (fuel slip). All upstream losses are summarized as fugitive emissions.. Methanol or ammonia is hazardous for the environment as well as for humans and animals. Therefore, great efforts are made to reduce the fuel slip occurring in large engines, such as those used for ship propulsion.
[0016] Use of fossil fuels and other alternative fuels in large engines contribute greatly to greenhouse gases and to the existing climate crisis. In attempts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reducing CO2 emissions in exhaust gases of power plants and industries or other sources in the environment are of utmost importance. Absorption of CO2 using a suitable solvent is one of the most prevalent and popular methods of carbon capture practised today. Physical or chemical (or a combination of both) solvents for absorption of CO2 can be adapted according to the requirements, where both the methods have advantages and disadvantages over the other. Chemical method of carbon capture is more widely practiced where the thermodynamic conditions do not favour a physical absorption process, wherein the chemical solvent has higher CO2 absorption and desorption potential.
[0017] On-board chemical absorption carbon capture requires CO2 desorption to regenerate the solvent in order to enable a cyclic, sustainable operation. This usually involves high energy demands. The process can be briefly described as follows: a suitable chemical solvent is introduced into an absorption unit, where it only reacts and dissolves CO2 from an exhaust gas, to form a temporary weak chemical structure while not reacting with any other gases. This (CO2) rich solvent can be regenerated by heating it to release the trapped CO2 molecule and thereby regenerating the (CO2) lean solvent that can then be used again for CO2 absorption. According to the present application, a rich solvent is therefore a CO2-containing solvent that contains more CO2 than the lean solvent. On the other hand, a lean solvent may be a solvent that is not completely C02-free but still contains a certain amount of CO2. By definition, a lean solvent contains less CO2 than the rich solvent.
[0018] Hence, the rich solvent from the absorption unit is then transferred to a desorption unit where it is stripped off the absorbed CO2 and the regenerated solvent is recycled and reused for the absorption process in the absorption unit. Although absorption of CO2 raises the temperature of this solvent, it needs to be further heated to a temperature of ~12O-13O°C. An external heating source or a reboiler is used to heat the solvent in the desorption unit. The regenerated (CO2 stripped) lean solvent is then recirculated and reused in the absorption unit. Whereas the desorbed CO2 is cooled and compressed to liquify and are stored in suitable containers.
[0019] The desorption unit may utilize the steam generated by exhaust gas to heat up the rich solvent. In large engines, the steam quality (temperatures and pressures) from the exhaust gas is not always optimum for raising the temperature of the solvent up to -120-130 °C. While such temperatures might be achieved when the engine is working at its full load capacity, at partial engine loads, the waste heat is insufficient in quantity and / or quality to raise the temperature of the solvent to enable a sufficient CO2 desorption process. Thus, other, e.g. fuel intensive (combustion) form for generating required desorption heat is usually used.

[0022] On-board chemical absorption carbon capture is an energy intense yet very crucial process to curb CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Presently known methods of on-board chemical absorption carbon capture from the exhaust gas of large engines involve a number of steps leading up to absorption and desorption of CO2 from a solvent. The known methods involve several challenges which will be addressed herein. It is an objective of the present invention to at least in part overcome the drawbacks of the prior art solutions and in particular to provide a system, a method, and a propulsion system for a marine vessel, which enable the capturing of a larger amount of CO2.
[0023] According to a first aspect of the invention, this objective is achieved by a system for separating CO2 from an exhaust gas of a large engine by means of a solvent, wherein the solvent is capable of reversibly absorbing and desorbing CO2 from the exhaust gas. The system is in particular configured for use on board of a marine vessel. The system comprises an absorption container configured to receive the exhaust gas comprising CO2 from the large engine and lean solvent, wherein the lean solvent absorbs at least a part of the CO2 from the exhaust gas, thereby producing rich solvent and exhaust gas having a reduced CO2 content. The system further comprises a desorption container configured to receive rich solvent from the absorption container, wherein the desorption container is configured to evaporate a CO2 comprising fluid from the rich solvent in the desorption container in an endothermic desorption process such that lean solvent is generated. The absorption container is connected to the desorption container by a first line configured to transfer rich solvent from the absorption container to the desorption container. The system further advantageously comprises a first apparatus for intermediate storage of rich solvent, the first apparatus comprising a solvent storage container.

A system for separating CO2 from an exhaust gas (15) of a large engine (11) by means of a solvent (3), wherein the solvent (3) is capable of reversibly absorbing and desorbing CO2 from the exhaust gas, wherein the system is in particular configured for use on board of a marine vessel, the system comprising: an absorption container (13) configured to receive the exhaust gas (15) comprising CO2 from the large engine (11) and lean solvent (3), wherein the lean solvent (3) absorbs at least a part of the CO2 from the exhaust gas (15), thereby producing rich solvent (3) and exhaust gas (15) having a reduced CO2 content, a desorption container (1) configured to receive rich solvent (3) from the absorption container (13), wherein the desorption container (1) is configured to evaporate a CO2 comprising fluid from the rich solvent (3) in the desorption container (1) in an endothermic desorption process such that lean solvent (3) is generated, wherein the absorption container (13) is connected to the desorption container (1) by a first line (14) configured to transfer rich solvent (3) from the absorption container (13) to the desorption container (1), characterized in that the system further comprises a first apparatus for intermediate storage of rich solvent (3), the first apparatus comprising a solvent storage container (39).

The system of claim 1, wherein the first apparatus is configured to• at a third time, receive rich solvent (3) from the absorption container (13) and store it in the solvent storage container (39); and• at a fourth time, supply the rich solvent (3) from the solvent storage container (39) to the desorption container (1).

The system of any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a second apparatus configured for intermediate heat energy storage from the large engine (11), the second apparatus comprising: a container (30) comprising a heat storage medium (35), wherein the heat storage medium (35) is capable of reversibly absorbing, storing, and releasing heat energy from the large engine (11); means to transfer, at a first time, a first amount (32) of heat energy from the large engine (11) to the heat storage medium (35); and means to supply, at a second time, a second amount (34) of heat energy from the heat storage medium (35) for reuse.4- The system of claim 3, wherein the second apparatus is configured to store at least too MJ of heat energy, in particular at least 500 MJ of heat energy, particularly at least 1 GJ of heat energy.

The system of any of any one of the claims 3 to 4, wherein the second apparatus is configured to transfer the first amount (32) of heat energy from at least one of the group consisting of an exhaust gas (15) of the large engine (11), a cooling fluid of the large engine (11), a lubrication fluid of the large engine (11), and a scavenge air cooler of the large engine (11).
6. The system of any one of the claims 3 to 5, wherein the second apparatus is configured to supply the second amount (34) of heat energy to the desorption container (1) to provide the second amount (34) of heat energy to the rich solvent (3) in the desorption container (1) for desorbing the CO2 comprising fluid from the rich solvent (3) in an endothermic CO2 desorption process.

The system of any one of the claims 3 to 6, wherein the heat storage medium (35) comprises a latent heat storage material configured to undergo a phase-change such that the transfer of the first amount (32) of heat energy and the supply of the second amount (34) of heat energy enable a cyclic heat absorption and release from the heat storage medium (35).
8. The system of any one of the claims 3 to 7, wherein the heat storage medium (35) comprises one or more of a group consisting of water, salt, molten salt, benzamide, concrete, oil, and basalt.
9. The system of any one of the claims 3 to 8, configured to at least one of:- transfer the first amount (32) of heat energy to the heat storage medium (35), when the temperature of the rich solvent in the desorption container (1) exceeds a first specified temperature threshold; supply the second amount (34) of heat energy from the heat storage medium (35) to the rich solvent, when the temperature of the rich solvent falls below a second specified temperature threshold;- transfer the first amount (32) of heat energy to the heat storage medium (35) at an engine load of above 50 %; and supply the second amount (34) of heat energy from the heat storage medium (35) at an engine load of below 50%, in particular below 60 %.
10. The system of any one of the claims 3 to 9, wherein the second apparatus is connected to a heat pump configured to transfer a third amount (32) of heat energy from a cooling process of the CO2 comprising fluid as desorbed from the rich solvent (3) in the desorption container (1) to the heat storage medium (35).
11. The system of any one of the claims 3 to 10, wherein a storage temperature of the heat storage medium (35) is between 340-500 K, and in particular wherein the first amount (32) of heat energy is transferred at a source temperature of above 400 K and / or wherein the second amount (34) of heat energy is supplied at a target temperature of below 400 K.
12. The system of any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a low-pressure source (5) in a fluid connection with the desorption container (1), configured such that a low-pressure generated by the low-pressure source (5) enhances the evaporation of the CO2 comprising fluid from the rich solvent (3) in the desorption container (1).
13. The system of any one of the preceding claims configured such that a time interval between the third time and the fourth time is at least 5 minutes, preferably at least 15 minutes, advantageously at least 30 minutes.
14. The system of any one of the claims 3 to 13 configured such that a time interval between the first time and the second time is at least 15 minutes, preferably at least 30 minutes, advantageously at least 60 minutes.
15. A method for storing a solvent (3) in a system for separating CO2 from an exhaust gas (15) of a large engine (11), in particular of any one of the claims 1 to 14, wherein the solvent (3) is capable of reversibly absorbing and desorbing CO2 from the exhaust gas of the large engine (11), the method comprising steps of: at a third time, receiving rich solvent (3) from an absorption container (13) of the carbon capture (OCC) device in a solvent storage container (39); storing the solvent (3) in the solvent storage container (39), preferably for at least 5 minutes, more preferably for at least 15 minutes, advantageously for at least 30 minutes; and at a fourth time, supplying the rich solvent (3) from the solvent storage container (39) to a desorption container (1) of the carbon capture (OCC) device.
16. A method for storing heat energy from a large engine (n) in a system for separating CO2 from an exhaust gas (15) of the large engine (11), in particular of any one of the claims 1 to 14, the method comprising steps of:- transferring, at a first time, a first amount (34) of heat energy from the large engine (11) to a heat storage medium (35), wherein the heat storage medium is capable of reversibly absorbing, storing, and releasing heat energy from the large engine (11); storing the heat storage medium (35) in a container (30), preferably for at least 15 minutes, more preferably for at least 30 minutes, advantageously for at least 60 minutes; and supplying, at a second time, a second amount (36) of heat energy from the heat storage medium (35) for reuse, in particular in an endothermic CO2 desorption process in a desorption container (1) of the system for desorbing a CO2 comprising fluid from rich solvent (3) such that lean solvent (3) is generated.
17. The method of claim 16, wherein at least one of- the step of transferring the first amount (34) of heat energy to the heat storage medium (35) is carried out when the temperature of the rich solvent in a desorption container (1) of the system exceeds a first specified temperature threshold;- wherein the step of supplying the second amount (36) of heat energy from the heat storage medium (35) to the rich solvent is carried out when the temperature of the rich solvent falls below a second specified temperature threshold;- wherein the step of transferring the first amount (34) of heat energy to the heat storage medium (35) is carried out at an engine load of above 50 %; and- wherein the step of supplying the second amount (36) of heat energy from the heat storage medium (35) is carried out at an engine load of below 50%, in particular below 60 %.
18. The method of any one of the claims 16 to 17, wherein transferring the first amount (34) of heat energy from the large engine (11) to the heat storage medium (35) comprises transferring heat energy from the large engine (11) to the solvent (3) and subsequently from the solvent (3) to the heat storage medium (35).
19. A propulsion system for a marine vessel comprising a large engine (11), in particular a longitudinally scavenged two-stroke engine with at least one cylinder having an inner diameter of at least 200 mm, and a system for separating CO2 from an exhaust gas (15) of the large engine (11) of any one of the claims 1 to 14.
