[0043] As used herein, “at least one of the following: <a list of two or more elements>” and “at least one of <a list of two or more elements>” and similar wording, where the list of two or more elements are joined by “and” or “or” , mean at least any one of the elements, or at least any two or more of the elements, or at least all the elements.

[0044] As used herein, unless stated explicitly, performing a step “in response to A” does not indicate that the step is performed immediately after “A” occurs and one or more intervening steps may be included.

[0045] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of example embodiments. As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It will be further understood that the terms “comprises” , “comprising” , “has” , “having” , “includes” and / or “including” , when used herein, specify the presence of stated features, elements, and / or components etc., but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof.

[0046] As used in this application, the term “circuitry” may refer to one or more or all of the following: (a) hardware-only circuit implementations (such as implementations in only  analog and / or digital circuitry) and (b) combinations of hardware circuits and software, such as (as applicable) : (i) a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuit (s) with  software / firmware and (ii) any portions of hardware processor (s) with software (including digital  signal processor (s) ) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a mobile phone or server, to perform various functions) and (c) hardware circuit (s) and or processor (s) , such as a microprocessor (s) or a  portion of a microprocessor (s) , that requires software (e.g., firmware) for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation.

[0047] This definition of circuitry applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term circuitry also covers, for example and if applicable to the particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0048] As used herein, the term “communication network” refers to a network following any suitable communication standards, such as New Radio (NR) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) , Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) and so on. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network device in the communication network may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols, including, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) , 5G Advanced, 5.5G, the sixth generation (6G) communication protocols, and / or any other protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Embodiments of the present disclosure may be applied in various communication systems. Given the rapid development in communications, there will of course also be future type communication technologies and systems with which the present disclosure may be embodied. It should not be seen as limiting the scope of the present disclosure to only the aforementioned system.

[0049] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses the network and receives services therefrom. The network device may refer to a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) , for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , an NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a Remote Radio Unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, an Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) node, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, a non-terrestrial network (NTN) or non-ground network device such as a satellite network device, a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite and a geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) satellite, an aircraft network device, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology. In some example embodiments, radio access network (RAN) split architecture comprises a Centralized Unit (CU) and a Distributed Unit (DU) . Such architecture can be applied to an IAB donor node. An IAB node comprises a Mobile Terminal (IAB-MT) part that behaves like a UE toward the parent node, and a DU part of an IAB node behaves like a base station toward the next-hop IAB node.

[0050] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. The terminal device may also correspond to a Mobile Termination (MT) part of an IAB node (e.g., a relay node) . In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0051] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “resource block, ” “physical resource block” (PRB) , “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, for example, a communication between a terminal device and a network device, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other combination of the time, frequency, space and / or code domain resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, unless explicitly stated, a resource in both frequency domain and time domain will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0052] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. In the communication environment 100, a plurality of communication devices, including a first apparatus 110, a second apparatus 120, and terminal devices 150 and 160, can communicate with each other. For example, the terminal device 150 communicates with the first apparatus 110, and the terminal device 160 communicates with the second apparatus 120.

[0053] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 may be two network devices or network nodes associated with a radio unit (RU) 115. For example, the first apparatus 110 may include or be implemented as a first access network device supporting a first radio access technology (RAT) . For example, the first apparatus 110 may be a 6G radio access network (RAN) node. The second apparatus 120 may include or be implemented as a second access network device supporting a second RAT difference from the first RAT. For example, the second apparatus 120 may be a 5G RAN node. The RU 115 (such as the first apparatus 110 or the second apparatus 120) may provide a serving area or a cell for the terminal devices 150 and 160. Specifically, the first apparatus 110 provides a cell 101 for the terminal device 150, and the second apparatus 120 provides a cell 102 for the terminal device 160. That is, the terminal device 150 may be connected to the first apparatus 110 via a 6G connection, and the terminal device 160 may be connected to the second apparatus 120 via a 5G connection. In some example embodiments, the cell 101 and the cell 102 may have similar coverage areas.

[0054] Alternatively, in some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 may be two network devices or network nodes supporting a same RAT. That is, two network devices of the same RAT may provide network services for the terminal devices 150 and 160. For the purpose of discussion, some example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described with the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 supporting different RATs, but it is to be understood that the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 may support the same RAT in some embodiments.

[0055] As used herein, a transmission direction from the first apparatus 110 to the terminal device 150 or from the second apparatus 120 to the terminal device 160 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a transmission direction from the terminal device 150 to the first apparatus 110 or from the terminal device 160 to the second apparatus 120 is referred to as uplink (UL) .

[0056] In some example embodiments, the communication environment 100 may further include a third apparatus 130. In an example embodiment, the third apparatus 130 may be a core network (CN) device or CN node associated with the first apparatus 110 and / or the second apparatus 120. The first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 may communicate with each other via the CN, for example, in case there is no direct interface between them. An example direct interface between two RAN access nodes is the Xn interface. For example, the first apparatus 110 communicates with a 6G CN node, and the second apparatus 120 communicates with a 5G CN node. The 6G CN node and the 5G CN node may communicate with each other. 6G core network (6GC) may be an evolution of 5G core network (5GC) , where there may be dedicated network functions, shared network functions, and / or combo network functions. The communication between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 may be via the 6G CN node and the 5G CN node.

[0057] Alternatively, or in addition, the third apparatus 130 may include or be implemented as a mediator between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120. The resource allocation for the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 may be performed by the mediator. The resource allocation for the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 may be supported by the mediator. The third apparatus 130 may alternatively include resource schedulers for the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120, respectively, which may schedule resources for the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120.

[0058] In some example embodiments, the communication environment 100 may further include a fourth apparatus 140. The fourth apparatus 140 may communicate with the first apparatus 110, the second apparatus 120, and / or the third apparatus 130. The fourth apparatus 140 may include an operations, administration, and maintenance (OAM) and / or a policy control function (PCF) .

[0059] As used herein, a core network function may be implemented as a core network entity that includes a combination of hardware processing circuit and software and / or firmware comprising machine-readable instructions, or software comprising machine-readable instructions that are executable by at least one processor of hardware processing circuit of an apparatus. A hardware processing circuit includes at least one processor and at least one memory storing machine-readable instructions that are executable by the at least one processor of the hardware processing circuit. A processor includes any or some combination of an accelerator, a microprocessor, a core of a multi-core microprocessor, a microcontroller, a programmable integrated circuit, a programmable gate array, a digital signal processor, a central processing unit, a graphic processing unit, a tensor processing unit. Memory includes any or some combination of volatile or non-volatile memory (e.g., a flash memory, cache, a random-access memory (RAM) , and / or a read-only memory (ROM) ) . The memory stores the machine-readable instructions of the software and / or firmware for execution by the at least one processor of the hardware processing circuit. The machine-readable instructions are executable by the at least one processor of the hardware processing circuit cause the hardware processing circuit to perform the actions or operations of the methods described herein. For example, the session management function described herein may be implemented as a session management entity and the session management policy control function described herein may be implemented as a session management policy control entity, respectively.

[0060] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 support network slicing. The network slicing supports different services using the same underlying mobile network infrastructure. The network slice of the first apparatus 110 and the network slice of the second apparatus 120 may share network resources. For example, 5G / 6G multi-radio spectrum sharing (MRSS, also referred to as multi-RAT spectrum sharing) may be supported by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120. 5G / 6G MRSS is deemed to be a key feature for a migration from 5G to 6G as it allows NR and 6G cells to share the same carrier (s) , dynamically, or semi-dynamically adapting to traffic requirements, for example. MRSS can thus provide dynamic spectrum sharing between 5G and 6G.

[0061] In an example MRSS scenario, it is assumed that the 5G MRSS cell (the coverage area of the second apparatus 120) and the 6G MRSS cell (the coverage area of the first apparatus 110) are sharing the same RU. As shown in FIG. 1, the cell 101 and the cell 102 may be similar. That is, the coverage areas may be similar for both the 5G MRSS cell and the 6G MRSS cell.

[0062] It is to be understood that the number of apparatuses, devices and their connections shown in FIG. 1 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of devices configured to implementing example embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more additional devices may be located in the cell 101 or the cell 102, and one or more additional cells may be deployed in the communication environment 100. For example, in FIG. 1, two terminal devices are depicted; however, it is to be understood that the communication environment 100 may include additional terminal devices beyond the two shown.

[0063] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future. For example, via artificial intelligence / machine learning (AI / ML) techniques, new waveforms may be developed and employed during the run time.

[0064] In recent years, with the rapid development of 5G technology, network slicing has emerged as a key pillar in the industry, which can enable the deployment of logical networks in the same infrastructure. A network slice may be tailored to specific business needs, which may be captured by service level agreements (SLAs) . Network slicing is expected to be supported by the 6G system, which implies that network slicing may be used in both 5G and 6G. Simultaneously, 5G / 6G MRSS is deemed to be a key feature for the migration from 5G to 6G as it allows NR and 6G cells to share the same carrier (s) dynamically or semi-dynamically adapting to traffic requirements, for example. MRSS has been considered as an important candidate to be the enabler for 5G to 6G migration.

[0065] A key enabler of MRSS efficiency is the smart resource splitting between 5G and 6G RATs. This resource splitting can reflect the traffic load per RAT, avoiding congestion in one RAT while the other RAT does not fully use all allocated resources.

[0066] To fully exploit dynamic sharing, a fast and reliable coordination between 5G RAN and 6G RAN needs to be implemented. Different deployments may be expected for 6G RAN, reflected by the different exchange rates between a 5G L2 scheduler and a 6G L2 scheduler. For example, an MRSS system with a cloud-native RAN deployment for 6G and a classical deployment for 5G (where CU / DU, and RU are logically co-located) may result in considerable delay between the 5G scheduler and the 6G scheduler. In this case, the exchange rate may be limited due to the non-collocated 5G and 6G RAN deployments.

[0067] Dynamic sharing of resources within each time slot can become a challenging problem and would require a new design. For non-collocated schedulers or dual schedulers, resource coordination may be handled by means of a mediator or through direct or indirect interaction between 5G RAN and 6G RAN.

[0068] Network slicing plays a critical role in 5G by supporting different services using the same underlying mobile network infrastructure. Network slices, simply slices, may differ either in their service requirements, like Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) and enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) , or the tenant providing those services.

[0069] A certain slice may be deployed in or have access to MRSS spectrum as part of the radio resource management (RRM) policies. Due to coverage and / or slice / service requirements, a large number of 6G slices may need to utilize MRSS spectrum. Furthermore, as 5G is also utilizing slicing, there is a need to determine the resource allocation across both 5G slices and 6G slices once MRSS is utilized. Currently, there is no known mechanism that enables cross-RAT slicing in MRSS-based deployments, where MRSS is considered the main migration path.

[0070] The present disclosure captures the problem of cross-RAT slicing in the context of MRSS and provides a method to solve the cross-RAT prioritization, which requires coordination between 5G RAN and 6G RAN.

[0071] In accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for network slice resource sharing. In a solution, a 6G RAN node transmits a MRSS resource request for at least one network slice of the 6G RAN node to a 5G RAN node, a 6GC node, a 5GC node and / or a mediator. The MRSS resource request indicates at least one MRSS resource requested for the slice in a set of MRSS resources shared by the 6G RAN node and the 5G RAN node. Then, the 6G RAN node receives, from the 5G RAN node, the 6GC node, the 5GC node and / or the mediator, a response to the request. The response indicates at least one granted resource for the slice. As such, there is provided an effective and flexible approach for enabling cross-RAT slicing in the existence of MRSS.

[0072] Example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0073] FIG. 2 illustrates an example signaling flow 200 for network slice resource allocation according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow may occur in the communication environment 100 as shown in FIG. 1. For the purpose of discussion, it is assumed that the first apparatus 110 is implemented as a node supporting a first RAT such as a 6G node, and the second apparatus 120 is implemented as a node supporting a second RAT such as a 5G node. It is to be understood that embodiments described with respect to the 6G node may be performed by a 5G node or any other suitable network device or node, and embodiments described with respect to the 5G node may be performed by a 6G node or any other suitable network device or node. The operations of the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 may be interchangeable in some example embodiments.

[0074] In operation, the first apparatus 110 transmits (2011) a resource request for at least one network slice of the first apparatus 110 to the second apparatus 120. Correspondingly, the second apparatus 120 receives (2012) the resource request from the first apparatus 110. The resource request indicates at least one resource requested for the at least one network slice in a set of resources shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120. The set of resources shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 may be MRSS resources. Thus, the resource request may be a MRSS resource request.

[0075] Alternatively, or in addition, the first apparatus 110 transmits (2013) the resource request to the third apparatus 130. Correspondingly, the third apparatus 130 receives (2014) the resource request from the first apparatus 110. If the resource request is transmitted (2013) from the first apparatus 110 to the third apparatus 130, the third apparatus 130 may transmit (2015) the resource request to the second apparatus 120. Thus, the second apparatus 120 may receive (2016) the resource request from the third apparatus 130.

[0076] In some example embodiments, the at least one network slice includes a set of network slices. The set of network slices may be referred to as a network slice list. The response indicates the at least one granted resource for at least a subset of the set of network slices.

[0077] In some example embodiments, the resource request may indicate at least one network slice ID, for example, single-network slice selection assistance information (S-NSSAI) of the at least one network slice, the at least one requested resource, at least one time duration requested for the at least one network slice, and / or at least one priority associated with each of the at least one S-NSSAI.

[0078] In some example embodiments, the resource request may indicate at least one network slice access group (NSAG) .

[0079] A network slice may be uniquely identified via the S-NSSAI. FIG. 3 illustrates an example format of S-NSSAI 310. As shown, the S-NSSAI 310 may include a slice service type (SST) field 320 and a slice differentiator (SD) filed 330. In some example embodiments, the S-NSSAI may include a total length of 32 bits with the SST field 320 being 8 bits and the SD field 330 being 24 bits. In some example embodiments, the S-NSSAI may only include the SST field.

[0080] In some example embodiments, a terminal device may be allowed to be simultaneously connected and served by at most eight slices corresponding to eight network slices. That is, there may be eight S-NSSAIs for the eight network slices. Each cell may support tens or even hundreds of slices, e.g., a Tracking Area (TA) may have a support up to 1024 network slices which can be, for example, further increased by supporting additional slice support information field. The SST field 320 may have standardized and non-standardized values. Values 0 to 127 belong to the standardized SST range. For instance, SST value of 1 may indicate that the slice is suitable for handling of 5G eMBB, 2 for handling of URLLC, etc. SD is operator-defined only. It is to be understood that the format, the number of bits, and the number of slices described with respect to FIG. 3 are only for the purpose of illustration, without suggesting any limitation. Embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited here.

[0081] Referring back to FIG. 2, in the case that the resource request is received (2012 / 2016) by the second apparatus 120, the second apparatus 120 transmits a response to the resource request to the first apparatus 110 and / or the third apparatus 130. The response indicates at least one granted resource for the at least one network slice. Specifically, the second apparatus 120 transmits (2021) the response to the first apparatus 110. Correspondingly, the first apparatus 110 receives (2022) the response. Alternatively, or additionally, the second apparatus 120 transmits (2023) the response to the third apparatus 130. The third apparatus 130 may then receive (2024) the response from the second apparatus 120.

[0082] In the case that the resource request is received (2014) by the third apparatus 130 and / or the response is received (2024) by third apparatus 130, the third apparatus 130 transmits (2025) the response to the first apparatus 110. The first apparatus receives (2026) the response correspondingly.

[0083] In some example embodiments, the at least one granted resource may include: a number of physical resource blocks (PRBs) granted for the at least one network slice, a list of radio frequencies granted for the at least one network slice, and / or at least one time duration such as timeslot granted for the granted resource for the at least one network slice.

[0084] In some example embodiments, the resource response may indicate at least one NSAG or at least one network slice list or at least one network slice set.

[0085] As such, an effective and flexible approach for enabling cross-RAT slicing in the existence of MRSS can be provided, where a 6G RAN node can directly communicate with a 5G RAN node or communicate with the 5G RAN node via a mediator, a core network node or a resource scheduler for resource allocation for slicing.

[0086] In some example embodiments, the resource request may be determined based on one or more factors, such as a resource availability status of the set of resources shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120, at least one policy indicating first priority information of a first set of network slices at the first apparatus 110, or a usage of the set of resources at the first apparatus 110, and / or a local admission control of the first apparatus 110. The local admission control may be based on the resource request and at least one policy indicating first priority information of a first set of network slices at the first apparatus 110. The at least one granted resource for the network slice of the first apparatus 110 may be based on one or more factors, such as the at least one requested resource, a resource availability status of resources at the second apparatus 120, at least one policy for network slices at the second apparatus 120, a usage of the set of resources at the second apparatus 120, and / or a further usage of the set of resources at the first apparatus 110. Further example embodiments regarding the resource request determination and transmission and the granted resource determination and transmission will be described with respect to FIG. 4 to FIG. 10.

[0087] FIG. 4 illustrates another example signalling flow 400 for enabling slicing in MRSS according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 400 may occur in the communication environment 100 as shown in FIG. 1. The signaling flow 400 involves direct interaction and a direct connection between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120, without the inclusion of a mediator or a core network node in the process. In this MRSS scenario, a set of a set of resources may be shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120.

[0088] In operation, the fourth apparatus 140 may allocate (4010) priority values for a first set of network slices at the first apparatus 110 and a second set of network slices at the second apparatus 120. The fourth apparatus 140 may determine a first policy and a second policy based on the allocation. The first policy may indicate first priority information of the first set of network slices, and the second policy may indicate second priority information of the second set of network slices. As used herein, the term “policy” may be referred to as a radio resource management (RRM) policy, which may be used for managing the resources for network slicing.

[0089] The first policy may include but not be limited to: at least one type of resources for the first set of network slices, an identifier of the first apparatus 110, at least one priority of the first set of network slices, and / or at least one resource usage quota for the at least one type of resources. Likewise, the second policy may include but not be limited to: at least one type of resources for the second set of network slices, an identifier of the second apparatus 120, at least one priority of the second set of network slices, and / or at least one resource usage quota for the at least one type of resources. The at least one type of resources may include: a first type of MRSS resources, a second type of uplink MRSS resources, and / or a third type of downlink MRSS resources.

[0090] As mentioned, the at least one policy may include at least one resource usage quota for at least one type of resources. FIG. 5 illustrates an example RRMPolicyRatio structure 500 indicating policies including the at least one resource usage quota. The RRMPolicyRatio may indicate the resource allocation for slices for an apparatus such as the second apparatus 120. In FIG. 5, rRMPolicyMaxRatio may define the maximum resource usage quota for the associated slices, including shared, prioritized and dedicated resources. The rRMPolicyMinRatio may define the minimum resource usage quota for the associated slices, including prioritized and dedicated resources. The rRMPolicyDedicatedRatio may define the dedicated resource usage quota for the slices, including dedicated resources. Shared resources may represent the resources that are shared with other slices. The shared resources are not guaranteed for use by the associated slices. Prioritized resources may represent the resources that are preferentially used by the associated slices. These resources may be guaranteed for use by the associated slices when it needs. When not used, these resources may be used by other slices. Dedicated resources may represent the resources that are dedicated for use by the associated slices. These resources cannot be shared even if the associated slices do not use them.

[0091] The first priority for the first apparatus 110 and the second priority for the second apparatus 120 may be with a similar or same structure as the RRMPolicyRatio structure 500. As such, the fourth apparatus 140 may provide consistent allocation of slice priorities across 5G and 6G. It is to be understood that the structure and the parameters in FIG. 5 are only for the purpose of illustration, without suggesting any limitation.

[0092] In some example embodiments, the structure or format of the policy may be modified. In an example embodiment, the policy may include at least one type of resources for a set of network slices, an identifier of the first apparatus 110 or the second apparatus 120 associated with the set of network slices, and / or at least one priority of the set of network slices. Table 1 and Table 2 illustrate examples of the RRM policy, respectively. In the examples of Table 1 and Table 2, the MRSS resource may be in the form of MRSS PRSs. It is to be understood that the attributes or values in Table 1 and Table 2 are only for the purpose of illustration, without suggesting any limitation. The RRM policy may include more or fewer attributes. Table 1 Table 2

[0093] In the example of Table 1, if the resourceType is PRB_MRSS, PRB_UL_MRSS and / or PRB_DL_MRSS, the rRMPolicyMaxRatio and rRMPolicyMinRatio refer to maximum resource quota and minimum resource quota for the PRB resources of MRSS, MRSS UL and / or MRSS DL. In the example of Table 2, the rRMPolicyMaxRatioMRSS and rRMPolicyMinRatioMRSS refer to maximum resource quota and minimum resource quota for the PRB resources of MRSS, MRSS UL and / or MRSS DL. With these examples, RRM policies for MRSS resource can be configured. In a further embodiment, the MRSS spectrum resources across 5G and 6G may also have RRM policy ratios, i.e. dedicated resources, prioritized resources, and shared resources, similar to those in FIG. 5.

[0094] Referring back to FIG. 4, the fourth apparatus 140 may transmit (4011) the first policy to the first apparatus 110. The first apparatus 110 may receive (4012) the first policy. As such, 6G RRM policy ratios and list of 6G slices with priorities, which are 6G RAN specific, may be configured at the first apparatus 110. Likewise, the fourth apparatus 140 may transmit (4013) the second policy to the second apparatus 120. The second apparatus 120 may receive (4014) the second policy. As such, 5G RRM policy ratios and list of 5G slices with priorities, which are 5G RAN specific, may be configured at the second apparatus 120. That is, each RAT may be configured with the priorities of its own slices.

[0095] In some example embodiments, the first and second policies may be transmitted at different time points. In an example embodiment, the fourth apparatus 140 may be implemented as an OAM, and the first and second policies may be transmitted at a time point for slice deployment for the first apparatus 110 and / or the second apparatus 120. That is, the slice policy may be provided across the network. For example, 6G RAN may request for a set of resources, for a certain amount of time, with a priority. The mediator or a 5G RAN node may evaluate this request with its own priorities and may accept or reject the request. In another example embodiment, the fourth apparatus 140 may be implemented as a PCF, and the first and second policies may be transmitted at a time point for setup or update a network associated with the first apparatus 110 and / or the second apparatus 120, and / or at a time point of a session establishment for the first apparatus 110 and / or the second apparatus 120.

[0096] In some example embodiments, the signalling flow 400 may further involve an update process of MRSS resource availability status. The first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 may update the resource availability status with each other at regular intervals. The MRSS resource availability may be exchanged between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 on a regular basis or on-demand. The available resource may be number of PRBs, or list of radio frequency, or timeslots excluding what have been admitted or scheduled for the slices subjected to the RRM policies.

[0097] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may transmit (4015) a message to the second apparatus 120. The message may indicate a resource availability status at the first apparatus 110 of the set of resources shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 and associated with at least one slice of the first apparatus 110. The second apparatus 120 may receive (4016) the message. The second apparatus 120 may transmit (4017) a message to the first apparatus 110. The message may indicate a resource availability status at the second apparatus 120 of a set of resources shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 and associated with the at least one slice. The message may indicate at least one available resource shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 at the second apparatus 120. The at least one available resource may include: a number of physical resource blocks (PRBs) available at the second apparatus 120, a list of radio frequencies available at the second apparatus 120, and / or at least one timeslot based on at least one policy for network slices at the second apparatus 120. The first apparatus 110 may receive (4018) the message.

[0098] Further, the first apparatus 110 transmits (4019) a MRSS resource request for at least one network slice of the first apparatus 110 to the second apparatus 410. The request may include at least one S-NSSAI, the associated priority, the requested resource, and the duration. The requested resource may be number of PRBs or list of radio frequencies (RFs) . The duration may be list of timeslots. Other details of the resource request may be the same or similar to those of the resource request described with the signaling flow 200, which will not be repeated herein. The second apparatus receives (4020) the resource request.

[0099] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may determine the resource request based on: a resource availability status of the set of resources shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120, or a usage of the set of resources at the first apparatus 110, and / or a local admission control of the first apparatus 110.

[0100] Correspondingly, the second apparatus 120 may transmit (4021) a MRSS resource response to the first apparatus 110. The resource response may include the granted resources for a subset of the slices or for the same set of slices. The granted resource may be number of PRBs or list of RFs. The duration may be list of timeslots. Other details of the resource response may be the same or similar to those of the resource response described with the signaling flow 200, which will not be repeated herein. The first apparatus may receive (4022) the resource response.

[0101] In some example embodiments, the second apparatus 120 may determine the granted resources based on: the requested resource, the resource availability status, at least one policy for network slices at the second apparatus 120, a usage of the set of resources at the second apparatus 120, and / or a further usage of the set of resources at the first apparatus 420.

[0102] As such, the first apparatus 110 may provide the MRSS spectrum request for a slice with slice priority. Accordingly, the second apparatus may satisfy the request according to indicated slice priority. This has the advantage of avoiding the usage of MRSS spectrum by lower priority 6G slices. Priorities of 5G and 6G slices may be consistent. Priority differentiation between 5G and 6G slices may be configured at the second apparatus.

[0103] In addition, the first apparatus 110 may provide the MRSS spectrum request for a slice based on local admission control and MRSS usage. Accordingly, the second apparatus 120 may admit the request according to slice resource requirement, RRM policy, MRSS resource status, slice resource usage, and probably MRSS usage by the requesting 6G RAN.

[0104] Moreover, in some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may transmit a resource release indication for at least one network slice of the first apparatus 110 to the second apparatus 120. The resource release indication may indicate at least one resource released for the at least one network slice in a set of resources shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120. The second apparatus 120 may receive the resource release indication. Likewise, the second apparatus 120 may transmit a resource release indication for at least one network slice of the second apparatus 120 to the first apparatus 110. The resource release indication may indicate at least one resource released for the at least one network slice in a set of resources shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120. In this manner, if a resource is to be released at an apparatus, the apparatus may inform another apparatus of the release of the resource. The resource availability at different apparatuses may thus be updated. Thus, the released resource may be allocated for future network slicing. The resource allocation can thus be optimized.

[0105] FIG. 6 illustrates yet another example signalling flow 600 for enabling slicing in MRSS according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 600 may occur in the communication environment 100 as shown in FIG. 1. The signaling flow 600 involves direct interaction and a direct connection between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120, without the inclusion of a mediator or a core network node in the process. In this MRSS scenario, a set of a set of resources may be shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120.

[0106] Most operations of the signaling flow 600 are the same or similar to the signaling flow 400. For example, operations 6010 and 6015-6022 may be the same or the similar to the operations 4010 and 4015-4022 in the signaling flow 400, respectively, which will not be repeated herein. The difference lies in that the each of the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 may be configured with both 5G and 6G slice priorities. For example, inter-RRM policy ratios and list of slices with priorities, which are for eligible 5G and 6G slices, may be configured at the both the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120.

[0107] In some example embodiments, the fourth apparatus 140 may transmit (6011) the first policy and the second policy to the first apparatus 110. The first apparatus 110 may receive (6012) the first and second policies. The fourth apparatus 140 may transmit (6013) the first and second policies to the second apparatus 120. The second apparatus 120 may receive (6014) the first and second policies. The first and second policies may be referred to as an inter-policy or inter-RRM policy.

[0108] By configuring the inter-RRM policies for the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120, each apparatus may be informed of policies of the apparatus and policies of the other apparatus. In this manner, the resource request may be determined further based on the policies of the other apparatus. The granted resource may be determined further based on the policies of the first apparatus 110. For example, 6G RAN provides the MRSS spectrum request for a slice. Accordingly, 5G RAN satisfies the request according to the priority configured for the requested slice. Such embodiments may have the advantage of avoiding the usage of MRSS spectrum by lower priority 6G slices.

[0109] FIG. 7 illustrates yet another example signalling flow 700 for enabling slicing in MRSS according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 700 may occur in the communication environment 100 as shown in FIG. 1. The signaling flow 700 involves indirect interaction and an indirect connection between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120, with the inclusion of a 6GC node 730-1 and a 5GC node 730-2 in the process. The 6GC node 730-1 and the 5GC node 730-2 may include and / or be implemented as the third apparatus 130 as shown in FIG. 1. In this MRSS scenario, a set of a set of resources may be shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120.

[0110] Operations 7010-7014 may be the same or the similar to the operations 6010-6014 in the signaling flow 600, respectively, which will not be repeated herein. Alternatively, in some example embodiments, the operations 7010-7014 may be replaced with the operations 4014-4014 in FIG. 4.

[0111] In the signaling flow 700, MRSS resource availability may be sent to the 5GC node 730-2 and the 6GC node 730-1 by the second apparatus 120 and the first apparatus 110, respectively, on a regular basis or on-demand. The available resource may be number of PRBs, or list of radio frequency, or timeslots excluding what have been admitted or scheduled for the slices subjected to the RRM policies.

[0112] In some example embodiments, the second apparatus 120 may transmit (7015) a message indicating a resource availability to the 5GC node 730-2. The 5GC node 730-2 may receive (7016) the message. The first apparatus 110 may transmit (7017) a message indicating a resource availability to the 6GC node 730-1. The 6GC node 730-1 may receive (7018) the message. The messages indicating resource availabilities may be similar to the same to those described with respect to the signaling flow 400, which will not be repeated herein. The 6GC node 730-1 and the 5GC node 730-2 may exchange (7019, 7020, 7221 and 7022) the messages, and then transmit (7023, 7025) the messages to the first apparatus 110 and the second messages 720, respectively. The first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 may receive (7024, 7026) the messages, respectively.

[0113] Further, the first apparatus 110 transmits (7027) a MRSS resource request for at least one network slice of the first apparatus 110 to the 6GC node 730-1. The request may the same or similar to that described with respect to the signaling flow 400, which will not be repeated herein. The 6GC node 730-1 receives (7028) the request and then may transmit (7029) the request to the 5GC node 730-2. The 5GC node 730-2 may receive (7030) the request and then transmits (7031) the request to the second apparatus 120. The second apparatus 120 receives (7032) the request.

[0114] Correspondingly, the second apparatus 120 transmits (7033) a MRSS resource response to the 5GC node 730-2. The 5GC node 730-2 may receive (7034) the response and then transmit (7035) the response to the 6GC node 730-1. The 6GC node may receive (7036) the response and then transmit (7037) the response to the first apparatus 110. The first apparatus 110 thus receives (7038) the response. The response may be the same or similar to the response as described with respect to the signaling flow 400, which will not be repeated herein.

[0115] As such, 6G RAN provides the MRSS spectrum request for at least one slice over 6GC and 5G RAN replies over 5GC. An effective approach for enabling cross-RAT slicing in the existence of MRSS can thus be provided, which is especially useful when there is no direct interface between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120.

[0116] In the communication environment 100, there may be a mediator for the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120, or not. FIG. 8 illustrates still another example signalling flow 800 for enabling slicing in MRSS according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 800 may occur in the communication environment 100 as shown in FIG. 1. It is assumed that in the example of FIG. 8, there is a mediator 830. The signaling flow 800 involves indirect interaction and an indirect connection between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120, with the inclusion of mediator 830 in the process. The mediator 830 may include and / or be implemented as the third apparatus 130 as shown in FIG. 1. In this MRSS scenario, a set of resources may be shared by the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120. The mediator 830 may be part of 6G RAN, 5G RAN, or OAM, or it may be provided by a 3rd party. The mediator may be part of near-realtime RAN intelligent controller (near-RT RIC) or non-realtime RAN intelligent controller (non-RT RIC) as in an open RAN architecture.

[0117] An operation 8010 may be the same or similar to the operation 6010 as described with respect to the signaling flow 600, which will not be repeated herein. The fourth apparatus 140 may transmit (8012) the first and second policies to the mediator 830. The mediator may receive (8012) the first and second policies. Therefore, inter-RRM policy ratios and list of slices with priorities, which are for eligible 5G and 6G slices, may be configured at the mediator. In this manner, the OAM or PCF may provide the slice priorities and inter-RRM policy ratios to the mediator 830.

[0118] The second apparatus 120 may transmit (8013) a message indicating a resource availability to the mediator 830. The mediator may receive (8014) the message. The message indicating resource availability may be similar to the same to that described with respect to the signaling flow 400, which will not be repeated herein. In this manner, the 5G RAN may update the mediator about available resources at regular intervals.

[0119] The first apparatus 110 transmits (8015) a MRSS resource request for at least one network slice of the first apparatus 110 to the mediator 830. The request may be same or similar to that described with respect to the signaling flow 400, which will not be repeated herein. In response to receiving (8016) the request, the mediator 830 may determine the granted resources that may be allocated to the first apparatus 110. The determination of the granted resource has been described with respect to FIG. 4, which will not be repeated here. The mediator 830 then transmits (8017) a MRSS resource response to the first apparatus 110. The first apparatus 110 receives (8018) the response. The response may be same or similar to the response as described with respect to the signaling flow 400, which will not be repeated herein. In this way, the mediator 830 may determine the resources that may be allocated to the 6G RAN and / or resources that may be allocated to 5G RAN.

[0120] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may provide the MRSS spectrum request for a slice based on local admission control and MRSS usage. Accordingly, the mediator 830 may admit the request according to slice resource requirement, inter-RRM policy, MRSS resource status, slice resource usage, and probably MRSS usage by the requesting 6G RAN.

[0121] The mediator 830 may provide (8019) the MRSS resource update to the second apparatus 120 on demand and / or periodic. The second apparatus may receive (8020) the MRSS resource update. Likewise, the mediator may provide the MRSS resource update to the first apparatus 110.

[0122] In some example embodiments, if a resource is to be released at the first apparatus 110 and / or the second apparatus 120, the first apparatus 110 and / or the second apparatus 120 may transmit to the mediator 830, a request for the resource release. In this way, the resource allocation status and the resource availability status can be updated at the mediator.

[0123] As such, an effective approach for enabling cross-RAT slicing in the existence of MRSS can be provided, which is especially useful when there is no direct interface between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120.

[0124] In some example embodiments, distinct per-RAT resource allocation may be performed by a plurality of schedulers. For example, semipersistent resource split may be updated time to time, for example, in regular intervals. As described in example embodiments of FIG. 4 to FIG. 8, 6G RAN may ask 5G RAN for availability of resources. Simi-dynamic resource split may be performed, where interactions may be needed in the setup phase. Alternatively, in some example embodiments, a joint resource allocation may be performed by a single scheduler. A single scheduler is a joint scheduler that can allocate resources for both 5G RAN and 6G RAN.

[0125] As mentioned, in some example embodiments, the fourth apparatus 140 may configure the RRM policies for the first apparatus 110 and / or the second apparatus 120. FIG. 9 illustrates an example signalling flow 900 for resource management policy adoption according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 900 may occur in the communication environment 100 as shown in FIG. 1. For example, the signaling flow may involve a terminal device 901 such as the terminal device 150 or the terminal device 160, a single 6G or 5G scheduler 902 (which may be implemented as the third apparatus 130) , a 6G DU-radio admission control (RAC) 903 which may be implemented at the first apparatus 110, a 6G and 5G CU 904, a 6GC 905 and an OAM 906 (such as the fourth apparatus 140) .

[0126] In operation, the OAM 906 may transmit (9011) to the scheduler 902, the 6G DU-RAC 903, and / or the 6G and 65G CU 904, a configuration of RRM policy ratio on PRB and / or data radio bearer (DRB) for 6G network slice. The 6G and 5G CU 904 may receive (9012) the configuration. The 6G DU-RAC 903 may receive (9013) the configuration. The scheduler 902 may receive (9014) the configuration. The RRM policies may be updated to cover MRSS spectrum. A slice priority ranking is needed across RATs. For example, the OAM 906 may consistently configure the slice priorities for 5G slices and 6G slices to avoid collision. Such cross-RAT slice priority assignment may avoid resource allocation collision among RATs.

[0127] The scheduler 902 may transmit (9021) a report of a resource usage of the 6G slices to the 6G DU-RAC 903. The 6G DU-RAC may receive (9022) the report of resource usage correspondingly. The report may include MRSS resources.

[0128] The terminal device 901 may transmit (9031) , to the 6GC 905, a PDU session request including a corresponding s-NSSAI. The 6GC 905 receives (9032) the PDU session request. The 6GC 905 may perform (9040) other PDU session procedure. The 6GC 905 may transmit (9051) , to the 6G and 5G CU 904, a PDU session request including the s-NSSAI, quality of service (QoS) , or the like. Correspondingly, the 6G and 5G CU 904 receives (9052) the PDU session request. The 6G DU-RAC 903 and the 6G and 5G CU 904 may perform (9060) an admission control based on a QoS requirement, weighted priority, PRB quota in the RRM policy, and PRB usage reported by the scheduler 902, as well as DRB quota and usage. The PRB usage may include the MRSS resource usage.

[0129] The terminal device 901, the scheduler 902, the 6G DU-RAC 903, the 6G and 5G CU 904 and the 6GC 905 may continue (9070) a PDU session establish procedure between the CU 904, the 6GC 905 and the terminal device 901. The terminal device 901 and the scheduler 902 may schedule (9080) the user plane data based on QoS, weighted priority, PRB quota in the RRM policy, PRB usage, and the like. Whether to use MRSS resource and how much MRSS resource may be used for the user plane data may be decided jointly by the scheduler 902, which may be up to implementation. The scheduler 902 may transmit (9091) , to the 6G DU-RAC 903, a report of the resource usage of 6G slices, which may include the MRSS resource. The 6G DU-RAC 903 may receive (9092) the report of resource usage. With the signaling flow 900, a single scheduler for 5G RAT and 6G RAT may be used. The MRSS resource information may be configured in the RAN.

[0130] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may perform a local admission control based on the resource request and at least one policy indicating first priority information of a first set of network slices at the first apparatus 110. In addition, the first apparatus 110 may schedule user plane data on the at least one granted resource for the at least one network slice. FIG. 10 illustrates an example signalling flow 1000 for user plane data scheduling according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 1000 may occur in the communication environment 100 as shown in FIG. 1.

[0131] In operation, the fourth apparatus 140 may transmit (1011) to the first apparatus 110, a first policy including a 6G slice RRM policy ratios and a list of S-NSSAI with priorities. The first apparatus 110 may receive (1012) the first policy. The first apparatus 110 may configure (1013) the 6G slice RRM policy ratios with the priorities. The fourth apparatus 140 may transmit (1021) to the second apparatus 120, a second policy such as a normal or legacy RRM policy. The second apparatus 120 receives (1022) the second policy and then configures (1023) the second policy for 5G slices. In this manner, 6G RAT is configured with 6G slice related RRM policies, and 5G RAT is configured with 5G slice related RRM policy.

[0132] The first apparatus 110 may perform (1030) a local admission control based on the RRM policy being triggered by a 6G slice resource request. The second apparatus 120 may follow (1040) a normal procedure such as a legacy procedure for slice admission control and scheduling. 6G RAN and 5G RAN may be pre-assigned with MRSS resource or spectrum. 5G RAN follows existing procedure to admit and schedule resources for the 5G slice. 6G RAN admits and schedules resources for 6G slice based on new RRM policy which considers MRSS ratio. The first apparatus 110 may schedule (1050) user plane data on MRSS PRB for the 6G slice and update the resource usage statistics. More statistical allocation may be based on the resource status updates.

[0133] In some example embodiments, during the resource coordination, only the dedicated and prioritized RRM policy groups may trigger the indication of S-NSSAI when requesting the resources. No slice indication would be required for the case of shared resources, where first come, first served principle may be applied.

[0134] If 5G slice and 6G slice have the same S-NSSAI (i.e., the same slice is deployed across 5G and 6G) , in case there is performance differentiation between 6G and 5G, this may be additionally considered for the resource allocation for the MRSS spectrum. For instance, more resources may be given to 6G due to superior performance or higher 6G priority. If 5G slice and 6G slice have the same S-NSSAI (i.e., the same slice is deployed across 5G and 6G) , in case there is no performance differentiation, the 5G slice behavior may be applied, i.e., slice priority and the RRM policy ratio for 5G is also applied to the MRSS spectrum / 6G RAN request. For the direct 5G RAN to 6G RAN communication, an inter-node interface, e.g., Xn or DU-DU, maybe be utilized.

[0135] It would be appreciated that some example specifications, signaling flows and embodiments are provided above, and the detailed description may be varied. It is to be understood that these signaling flows 200, 400, 600, 700, 800, 900 and / or 1000 may be used separately, or in any suitable combinations. Some example embodiments, operations or features described with respect to one of these signaling flows 200, 400, 600, 700, 800, 900 and / or 1000 may be applied to another of these signaling flows. Part of one of these signaling flows 200, 400, 600, 700, 800, 900 and / or 1000 may be applied in combination with part of another signaling flow. It is to be understood that these signaling flows 200, 400, 600, 700, 800, 900 and / or 1000 may involve any other suitable operations or signaling not shown. With these signaling flows, the resource allocation for MRSS resources for a plurality of network devices can be improved.
