[0037] As used herein, the term “communication network” refers to a network following any suitable communication technology, such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) , Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) and so on. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network device in the communication network may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols, including, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the future fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, and / or any other protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Embodiments of this disclosure may be applied in various communication systems. Given the rapid development in communications, there will also be future communication technologies and systems with which the various embodiments of this disclosure may be implemented. Stated differently, the aforementioned communication technologies, protocols and systems are not intended to limit the scope of this disclosure.

[0038] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network from which a terminal device can access the communication network and receive services therefrom. The network device may refer to a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) . For example, a network device may comprise a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , an NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, and so forth, depending on the applicable use case (s) and technology.

[0039] As used herein, the term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example –rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a subscriber station, a portable subscriber station, a mobile station (MS) , or an access terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include –but is not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, a voice over IP (VoIP) phone, a wireless local loop phone, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , a portable computer, a desktop computer, an image capture terminal device, such as a digital camera, a gaming terminal device, a music storage and playback appliance, a vehicle-mounted wireless terminal device, a wireless endpoint, a mobile station, a laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , a laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , a USB dongle, a smart device, a wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (loT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and application (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and application (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless device operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. As used herein, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0040] A reduced capability (RedCap) device is introduced from 3GPP Release 17 (Rel-17) to address new use cases with Internet of Things (IoT) requirements. The RedCap device is simpler, with lower complexity and cost, thanks to reduced bandwidth and fewer antennas than a NR capability UE device. Building on Rel-17, Rel-18 introduces an enhanced RedCap (eRedCap) device which supports lower terminal complexity and further power consumption by reducing service bandwidth to 5MHz and / or peak rates up to 10Mbps. In conjunction with existing Rel-17 RedCap, Rel-18 eRedCap, 3GPP Rel-19 has launched research and being planning for Rel-20 onward 6G on official supporting ultra-low complexity devices with ultra-low power consumption for very-low end IoT applications for new ambient IoT devices including pure battery less with no energy storage capability at all and devices with limited energy storage capability that do not need to be replaced or recharged manually.

[0041] Reducing the number of receiver (RX) branches is a large complexity reduction as each radio frequency (RF) chain constitutes a large percentage of RF cost, beside of UE bandwidth reduction. Compared to native NR UE which is typically equipped with a minimum of 4 RX branches in frequency range 1 (FR1) time division duplex (TDD) and minimum of 2 RX branches in FR1 frequency division duplex (FDD) , 3GPP Rel-17 RedCap and Rel-18 eRedCap supports only two and single RX chain (1Rx) and reduces device complexity up to 31%compared to four RX chain (4Rx) native NR UE. Single receiver chain (1Rx) UE eliminates the support of spatial multiplexing MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) and further reduces the UE complexity by up to 26%~31%compared to two RX chain (2Rx) UE, which is envisioned the dominated support for Rel-20 and 6G ambient IoT devices.

[0042] Reducing the number of RX branches also significantly reduces the physical size. The two RX chain (2Rx) UE has been supported for “glasses-type” non-RedCap XR UE in Rel-18 that physically cannot support 4RX for full-fledged XR device.

[0043] It is to be understood that terminal device with reduced number of RX branch may be applied for RedCap, eRedCap, XR glass devices, ambient IoT devices, or other devices.

[0044] Reference is made to Fig. 1, which illustrates an example communication system 100 in which some embodiments may be implemented. As shown in Fig. 1, the communication system 100 may comprise a network device 110. The network device 110 serves area 130 (also called as cell 130) . The communication system 100 may also comprise one or more terminal devices, such as terminal devices 120, and 121. The terminal devices 120, 121 are capable of connecting and communicating in an UL and DL with the network device 110. In communication systems, an UL refers to a link in a direction from a terminal device to a network device, and a DL refers to a link in a direction from the network device to the terminal device. In some embodiments, the terminal devices 120 and 121 may have a reduced number of RX branch.

[0045] It is to be understood that the number of network device and terminal devices is only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The system 100 may include any suitable number of network device and terminal devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0046] Communications in the communication system 100 may be implemented according to any suitable communication protocol (s) , including –but not limited to: cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) and on the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, such communications may utilize any suitable wireless communication technology, including –but not limited to: code division multiple access (CDMA) , frequency division multiple access (FDMA) , time division multiple access (TDMA) , frequency division duplex (FDD) , time division duplex (TDD) , multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) , orthogonal frequency division multiple (OFDM) , discrete fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0047] Devices with reduced number of receiver branches suffer a major degradation in downlink coverage due to a reduction in combining gain and receive diversity gain, especially common channels for those devices including PDCCH common channel, message 2, and message 4 during random access procedure. In contrast, there is no downlink coverage impact for dedicated control and data channels since the performance is tracked by a measurement-based channel state information (CSI) report and radio link adaption. For example, as shown in Fig. 2, which illustrates an example of downlink coverage for devices with different number of RX branches, there is more coverage loss (dB) for 1Rx UE dependent on frequency bands and an assumption of DL power spectral density (PSD) . For example, at FR1 TDD with 24 dBm / MHz PSD there is about 1dB loss for PDCCH common channel search space, 2~3dB loss for message 4 (msg4) , and up to 6dB loss for message 2 (msg2) . For FDD, there is no coverage loss in representative value but still have different observation of 0.4dB~3.9dB loss for msg2. In contrast, the downlink coverage loss for 2Rx UE has about 1dB loss for msg2 in FR1 TDD.

[0048] A network is unable to know the number of receiver chain of device until receiving a “maxNumberMIMO-LayersPDSCH” of “UE radio capability” from UE or access management function (AMF) after the competition of radio resource control (RRC) connection setup. Existing 3GPP supports an earlier indication for a RedCap and eRedCap UE to the network via message 3 (msg 3)  / message A (msgA) from specific logical channel IDs (LCIDs) or via message 1 (msg 1)  / msgA (PRACH occasion or PRACH preamble during initial access, but it is still unable to differentiate a RedCap and eRedCap UE of single receiver chain (1Rx) from the one of two-receiver chain (2Rx) . If network always perform downlink coverage compensation based on two receiver chain (2Rx) , there would be still coverage loss for devices with single receiver chain (1Rx) , otherwise it leads to random access capacity degradation if network always performs the coverage compensation based on single receiver chain (1Rx) .

[0049] Existing standards are not able to address the downlink coverage loss due to different RX branch number from TX branch number and also max transmission power. It is unable to identify the different downlink receiver chain under the same UL coverage as shown in Fig. 3. For example, RedCap and eRedCap UE supports same single uplink transmission antenna branch and same transmission power, but the downlink coverage loss for single receiver chain (1Rx) is different from the one of two-receiver chain (2Rx) . In case of UL coverage enhancement for 1TX UE has been supported, if no DL enhancements to address the gap, then it is not only loss coverage, waste of RACH resource but PRACH re-attempt with increasing power could deteriorate the cell RACH capacity to serve other UEs.

[0050] Legacy LTE Cat-M and NB-IoT have supported multiple coverage levels to provide deeper and extended coverage than traditional LTE UE (e.g., UE category 0) . However, those extended coverage levels are pre-defined and bounded with UL coverage extension on different repetition for PRACH, UL power header room report, etc. It also has same issue as existing NR UL coverage enhancements on msg1 and msg3 repetition which is also not able to address the different downlink coverage loss for different reduced number of RX devices under the same UL coverage. Moreover, NR doesn’t support the solution of LTE coverage levels because NR devices with reduced number of RX branches is not required to extend coverage beyond of NR native UE, but just need to meet same coverage in existing network. LTE solutions are too complicated and limits the deployment flexibility with DL / UL coverage difference.

[0051] Certain issue (s) , among other issues, addressed by some embodiments of this disclosure include how to apply dynamic downlink coverage compensation for a reduced number of receiver branch device.

[0052] According to some embodiments of this disclosure, there is provided an implementation of downlink coverage compensation. In an example of the implementation, a terminal device transmits, to a network device, a PRACH preamble indicating a type of a need of downlink coverage compensation. The terminal device receives, from the network device, a downlink channel related to a random access procedure, wherein the downlink channel is based on the type of the need of downlink coverage compensation. This implementation may support dynamic downlink coverage compensation.

[0053] Reference is now made to Fig. 4, which shows a flowchart illustrating an example process for downlink coverage compensation according to some embodiments. In some embodiments, Fig. 4 illustrates a process 400 for downlink coverage compensation. For the purpose of discussion, the process 400 will be described with reference to Fig. 1. The process 400 may involve the terminal device 120 and the network device 110 as illustrated in Fig. 1.

[0054] At 410, the terminal device 120 may transmit, to the network device 110, a PRACH preamble indicating a type of a need of downlink coverage compensation.

[0055] In some embodiments, the PRACH preamble is transmitted when random access procedure is initiated.

[0056] In some embodiments, the downlink channel related to the random access procedure may comprise at least one of a common physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) , a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) for a message 2 (msg2) , or a PDSCH for a message 4 (msg4) .

[0057] At 420, the terminal device 120 may receive, from the network device 110, a downlink channel related to a random access procedure, wherein the downlink channel is based on the type of the need of downlink coverage compensation.

[0058] In some embodiments, the downlink coverage compensation may also be referred to as downlink coverage recovery. The downlink coverage compensation may comprise applying transport block size (TBS) scaling, higher physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) aggregation level, PDSCH repetition for the common channels as bottleneck, or lower modulation and coding scheme (MCS) table technologies. With the downlink coverage compensation, full coverage for terminal device with reduced number of RX branches as same as NR native UEs may be allowed, and continuous service for the terminal device may be provided.

[0059] In some embodiments, the type of the need of downlink coverage compensation may comprise whether the downlink coverage compensation is needed. In some embodiments, the type of the need of downlink coverage compensation may comprise a need of a level of downlink coverage compensation. The level is among a set of levels of downlink coverage compensation. In some embodiments, the need of the level of downlink coverage compensation is based on or imply that the downlink coverage compensation is needed.

[0060] In some embodiments, a random access resource of the PRACH preamble indicates the type of the need of downlink coverage compensation.

[0061] In some embodiments, a set of random access resources comprising the random access resource of the PRACH preamble corresponds to the type of the need of downlink coverage compensation. It is to be understood that the set of random access resources may be shared for UEs with different number of Rx branch as long as they have a same type of downlink coverage compensation, instead of semi-static definition for each UE type.

[0062] In some embodiments, the type of the need of downlink coverage compensation is indicated by a receiver (RX) branch number of the terminal device 120.

[0063] In some embodiments, one RX branch corresponds to that the terminal device needs downlink coverage compensation, or more than one RX branches correspond to that the terminal device 120 does not need downlink coverage compensation.

[0064] In some embodiments, the RX branch number corresponds to a level of downlink coverage compensation that the terminal device 120 needs.

[0065] In some embodiments, the type of the need of downlink coverage compensation is determined based on whether at least one downlink coverage loss differentiated criterion is satisfied.

[0066] In some embodiments, each of the at least one downlink coverage loss differentiated criterion may relate to a need of a level of downlink coverage compensation. It is to be understood that criteria for different RX branch number may relate to a same level.

[0067] In some embodiments, a level of downlink coverage compensation that the terminal device 120 needs is determined based on which of the at least one downlink coverage loss differentiated criterion is satisfied.

[0068] In some embodiments, the at least one downlink coverage loss differentiated criterion may comprise reference signal received power (RSRP) of a downlink pathloss reference is less than or equal to a threshold for a corresponding RX branch number of the terminal device 120. In some embodiments, the at least one downlink coverage loss differentiated criterion may comprise a PRACH attempt number is above or equal to a threshold for a corresponding RX branch number of the terminal device 120. It is to be understood that there may be different criteria for different RX branch number.

[0069] In some embodiments, the network device 110 may perform coverage compensation for the downlink channel based on the indicated type of the need of downlink coverage compensation. In some embodiments, the downlink channel is with coverage compensation based on the indicated type of the need of downlink coverage compensation.

[0070] In some embodiments, the network device 110 may perform coverage compensation for the downlink channel, wherein a level of the coverage compensation is based on the need of the level of downlink coverage compensation. In some embodiments, the downlink channel is with the level of coverage compensation based on the need of the level of downlink coverage compensation.

[0071] In some embodiments, the terminal device 120 may receive, from the network device, a configuration indicating: a set of random access resources for the PRACH preamble related to a type of a need of downlink coverage compensation; a set of random access resources for the PRACH preamble related to a need of a level of downlink coverage compensation; at least one downlink coverage loss differentiated criterion; at least one downlink coverage loss differentiated criterion related to a need of a level of downlink coverage compensation; or any combination thereof.

[0072] For example, as shown in Fig. 5, for a 1RX UE, it has a small downlink coverage range compared to UE with more RX branches. For a 2RX UE, it has a downlink coverage range bigger than the 1RX UE but smaller than a 4RX UE. If the 1RX UE is in its downlink coverage range, no criterion has been satisfied, the 1RX UE may not need downlink coverage recovery, and may transmit a PRACH preamble indicating the downlink coverage compensation is not needed. A gNB may transmit a downlink channel without downlink coverage compensation to the 1RX UE. If the 1RX UE is out of its downlink coverage range, at least one criterion may be satisfied, the 1RX UE may need downlink coverage recovery, and may transmit a PRACH preamble indicating the downlink coverage compensation is needed. Further, a level of the downlink coverage compensation may be level #1. A gNB may transmit a downlink channel with downlink coverage compensation to the 1RX UE. However, a 2RX UE collocated with the 1RX UE may still in its downlink coverage range, no criterion has been satisfied, the 2RX UE may not need downlink coverage compensation, and may transmit a PRACH preamble indicating the downlink coverage compensation is not needed. A gNB may transmit a downlink channel without downlink coverage compensation to the 2RX UE. If the 2RX UE is out of its downlink coverage range, at least one criterion may be satisfied, the 2RX UE may need downlink coverage recovery, and may transmit a PRACH preamble indicating the downlink coverage compensation is needed. Further, a level of the downlink coverage compensation may be level #1. However, the 1RX UE collocated with the 2RX UE may need level #2 downlink coverage compensation, and a 4RX UE collocated with the 2RX UE may still in its downlink coverage range and may not need downlink coverage compensation.

[0073] In some embodiments, the type of the need of downlink coverage compensation indicated by the PRACH preamble may be referred to as an earlier MSG1 identification, for example, a “singleRx” for 1RX UE. The UE may include RedCap, eRedCap, XR glass device, ambient IoT device, or other devices. It may be combined with the RACH feature set associated to existing UE category definition to further differentiate single RX branch UE from other branches of the same category. For example, a combination of “singleRx” and “redcap” or “eRedCap” allows to differentiate Rel-17 RedCap 1RX UE and Rel-18 eRedCap 1RX UE separately.

[0074] If both set of Random Access resources combined with existing “redcap” or “eRedCap” and “singleRx” indication and the set of Random Access resources for existing “redcap” or “eRedCap” without “singleRx” indication are configured in a bandwidth part (BWP) , the set of Random Access resources for “redcap” or “eRedCap” without combination with new “singleRx” is identified as Rel-17 RedCap 2RX UE or Rel-18 eRedCap 2RX UE.

[0075] If there is no set of Random Access resources combined with existing “redcap” or “eRedCap” and new “singleRx” indication configured in a BWP, the existing set of Random Access resources combined with existing “redcap” or “eRedCap” just earlier identify as legacy that mixed both 1RX and 2RX redcap or eRedCap UE.

[0076] In some embodiments, the RX branch number may be configured in a feature combination information element (e.g. FeatureCombination) . If an indication of single RX (e.g. singleRx) is presented, it may indicate that signaling of UE with single RX branch is part of this feature combination, and indicate that the set of random access resources is not available for the random access procedure if it is not for UE with single RX branch. If the indication is not presented, it may indicate that signaling of UE with multiple RX branches is part of this feature combination, and indicate that the set of random access resources is available for the random access procedure for UE with multiple RX branch. This embodiment may be implemented into 3GPP TS 38.331, an example is shown as below. Table 1

[0077] This embodiment may be implemented into 3GPP TS 38.321, an example is shown as below. Table 2

[0078] It is dynamic downlink coverage compensation for different number of RX branch devices based on random-access feature set conditioned on single or multiple criteria in term of RX branch number differentiated of DL coverage loss criteria. It allows DL coverage compensation using same random-access resource corresponding to equivalent DL coverage compensation in different condition for different number of RX branches devices.

[0079] In some embodiments, the at least one downlink coverage loss differentiated criterion comprises: RSRP of a downlink pathloss reference is less than or equal to a threshold for a corresponding RX branch number of the terminal device 120. Each RX branch number may correspond to a threshold. For example, there may be a threshold for one RX branch (e.g. rsrp-ThesholdDl1RxCoveragRecovery) , and / or a threshold for two RX branch (e.g. rsrp-ThesholdDl2RxCoveragRecovery) .

[0080] In some embodiments, the at least one downlink coverage loss differentiated criterion may comprise a PRACH attempt number is above or equal to a threshold for a corresponding RX branch number of the terminal device 120. For example, the threshold may be preambleTransNumThreshold.

[0081] In some embodiments, whether the set of random access resources supports downlink coverage compensation level may be configured in a feature combination information element (e.g. FeatureCombination) . If an indication of downlink coverage compensation (e.g. dl-Coverage-RecoveryLevel) is presented, it may indicate that signaling of DL coverage compensation is part of this feature combination. If the indication is not presented, it may indicate that signaling of DL coverage compensation is not part of this feature combination.

[0082] If there is at least one set of random access resources with the indication of downlink coverage compensation set to true and at least one downlink coverage loss differentiated criterion is satisfied (e.g. the RSRP for 1RX UE of the downlink pathloss reference is less than rsrp-ThesholdDl1RxCoverageRecoveryLevel, or the RSRP for 2RX UE of the downlink pathloss reference is less than rsrp-ThesholdDl2RxCoverageRecoveryLevel) , DL coverage compensation is applicable for the current random access procedure. The PRACH preamble may be transmitted on the random access resource with the indication of downlink coverage compensation level set to true.

[0083] The indication of downlink coverage compensation level may be combined with the RACH feature set associated to the ones associated with UE category definition. For example, a combination of “dl-Coverage-Recovery-Level1” and “redcap” or “eRedCap” allows to identify for the needs of downlink coverage compensation for both Rel-17 RedCap UE and Rel-18 eRedCap UEs without additional RACH resources reservation..

[0084] The indication of downlink coverage compensation level may be combined with the RACH feature set associated to UL coverage enhancement including msg3 repetition and / or msg1 repetition, which allows to use same RACH resource set to identify the needs of both downlink and uplink coverage compensation in the overlapping region of downlink and uplink coverage.

[0085] There may be more than one RACH feature set combinations associated to different downlink coverage compensation level but to same UL coverage enhancement, for example, same msg1 repetition number, which allows to identify the needs of different downlink compensation level for different downlink loss for devices under the same uplink coverage.

[0086] This embodiment may be implemented into 3GPP TS 38.331, an example is shown as below. Table 3

[0087] This embodiment may be implemented into 3GPP TS 38.321, an example is shown as below. Table 4

[0088] With the process 400, dynamic identification for the needs of downlink coverage recovery for different number of RX branches UE when suffering different downlink coverage loss is supported, which allows network to perform corresponding coverage compensation for those devices specifically for wider and continuous service in existing network deployments as same as NR native UEs and avoids the down-gradation of random access capacity to serve all UEs in the whole cell based on the worse link budget for those reduced number of RX branch devices.

[0089] In some embodiments, the downlink coverage recovery is only performed when the RACH procedure using the associated PRACH feature set is initiated from UE when its corresponding DL coverage is out. It avoids RACH capacity loss due to semi-static RACH resources reservation for new msg1 identification even those UE are good downlink coverage. It is not defined for single Rx antenna device. It can be not limited to RedCap or eRedCap 1RX and 2RX UE devices, but is extensible for other UEs (e.g., XR glasses, or Ambient IoT devices) which has DL coverage loss compared to native UEs.

[0090] In contrast to existing NR UL coverage enhancements supported by Rel-18 MSG1 repetition, the process 400 may address the different downlink coverage loss for different reduced number of RX devices under the same UL coverage because those devices having same number of UL Tx branch and max UL Tx power. It supports PRACH preambles sharing different number of Rx devices with multiple different DL coverage region as long as it requires the same coverage recovery handling in different condition. By such, it avoids further RACH resource partitioning for different number of RX devices.

[0091] In contrast to legacy LTE Cat-M and NB-IoT coverage level which is bounded with UL coverage extension and not consider the downlink coverage difference compared to uplink and coverage difference for different number of RX branch, the process 400 may address the different downlink coverage loss for different reduced number of RX devices under the same UL coverage because those device having same number of UL Tx branch and max UL Tx power. Moreover, it avoids RACH capacity loss for RACH resource partition for different coverage level. It allows different RX branches. It can be independently configured or combined with existing feature set of UL coverage enhancement including msg3 repetition and msg1 repetition, which allows for independent or joint downlink and uplink coverage enhancement with flexibility based on real network DL / UL coverage difference.

[0092] The process 400 has no new Layer-1 UE feature and procedure impact, which minimizes the specification impact and UE changes.
