Description

DEVICES AND METHODS OF COMMUNICATIONTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of telecommunication, and in particular, to methods, devices and computer storage media of communication for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) .BACKGROUND

[0002] Frequency range (FR) 3 of 7.125 GHz -24.25 GHz may become a spectrum for future communication. FR3 is between FR1 and FR2, and channel characteristic of FR3 may be in-between a FR1 channel (e.g., a rich channel) and a FR2 channel (e.g., a sparse channel) . For the same size of an antenna panel, number of antennas for FR3 may be much higher than number of antennas for FR1. Frequency selectivity may be less significant with many antennas in certain channel condition. Thus, related communication schemes may need to be improved.SUMMARY

[0032] For a channel status information (CSI) report, a set of measurement results may be derived based on various signals and / or channels, including at least one of the following: a synchronization signal and physical broadcast channel (PBCH) block (SSB) for intra-cell and inter-cell, and periodic CSI-RS for beam management; semi-persistent CSI-RS and aperiodic CSI-RS; if L1-SINR measurement is applied, it is assumed that existing RS or RS combination (e.g., channel measurement resource (CMR) only, CMR + zero-power (ZP)  / non-zero-power (NZP) -interference measurement resource (IMR) ) for SINR is reused; a transmission configuration indication (TCI) state, comprising a unified TCI state, a downlink (DL) or joint TCI state, an uplink (UL) TCI state, a spatial relation, or a RS associated with the TCI state (including quasi co-location (QCL) reference RS configured in the TCI states, or QCL type D RS) ; a SSB, comprising a SSB from a serving TRP, a SSB from a serving cell, a SSB from other cells, or a SSB from other cells with different physical cell identities (PCIs) ; a CSI-RS, comprising a CSI-RS for beam management (e.g., configured for L1-RSRP / SINR report) , a CSI-RS for channel acquisition (e.g., configured for RI / PMI / CQI report) , a CSI-RS for mobility, a CSI-RS from other cell, a CSI-RS for tracking, a CSI-RS for candidate beams for beam failure recovery, or a CSI-RS for radio link monitoring or for beam failure detection; or a sounding reference signal (SRS) , a positioning reference signal (PRS) , a phase tracking reference signal (PTRS) , a demodulation reference signal (DMRS) , a pathloss reference signal (PL-RS) , etc.

[0033] It has been proved that frequency selectivity of a wireless channel may be vanished by increasing antenna number to be infinite. The same happens in time domain. This phenomenon may be called as channel hardening.

[0034] Due to very large number of antennas in FR3, frequency selectivity and time variation of a wireless channel may become less obvious (e.g., within coherent bandwidth / time) . Thus, related communication schemes, such as a channel measurement and report, and / or a transmission of a data / control channel may need to be improved.

[0035] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide solutions of communication for MIMO so as to overcome the above and other potential issues. In one aspect, a terminal device may determine first information comprising at least one of number of antennas, an operation frequency, or channel hardening information. Based on the first information, the terminal device may perform an operation comprising at least one of the following: transmitting, to a network device, a report of a difference between measurement results of a first set of resources and a second set of resources; or performing a partition of resources. Correspondingly, a network device may determine the first information, and perform, based on the first information, an operation comprising at least one of the following: receiving, from the terminal device, the report of the difference between measurement results of the first set of resources and the second set of resources, or determining the partition of resources.

[0036] In this way, overhead of communication such as channel measurement and report and resource scheduling may be reduced.

[0037] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.EXAMPLE OF COMMUNICATION NETWORK

[0038] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication network 100 in which embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. As shown in Fig. 1, the communication network 100 includes a terminal device 110 and a network device 120 served by the terminal device 110.

[0039] Although not shown, the terminal device 110 may have a plurality of antennas, and the network device 120 may have a plurality of antennas. The terminal device 110 may transmit information to the network device 120 or receive information from the network device 120 via one or more of the plurality of antennas. The plurality of antennas of the terminal device 110 may comprise one or more transmit antennas and one or more receive antennas. The plurality of antennas of the network device 120 may also comprise one or more transmit antennas and one or more receive antennas.

[0040] It is to be understood that the communication network 100 may include any suitable number of network devices and / or terminal devices and / or antennas adapted for implementing implementations of the present disclosure.

[0041] The communications in the communication network 100 may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, global system for mobile communications (GSM) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-evolution, LTE-advanced (LTE-A) , new radio (NR) , wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) , code division multiple access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE radio access network (GERAN) , machine type communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0042] Communication in a direction from the terminal device 110 towards the network device 120 is referred to as UL communication, while communication in a reverse direction from the network device 120 towards the terminal device 110 is referred to as DL communication. A wireless communication channel may comprise a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) , a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) , a physical random-access channel (PRACH) , a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) , a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) and a PBCH.

[0043] Due to very large number of antennas in FR3, frequency selectivity and time variation of a wireless channel may become less obvious (e.g., within coherent bandwidth / time) . In terms of frequency domain, a difference between wideband and subband becomes smaller. If reusing current quantization for subband reporting, overhead of report may become unnecessary. Further, a size of subband needs to be larger. If reusing current frequency partition, overhead of indications / reports may become unnecessary.

[0044] Thus, embodiments of the present disclosure provide solutions of communication for MIMO so as to enhance related communication schemes at least for FR3. The solutions will be described in detail with reference to FIG. 2 below.EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF MIMO COMMUNICATION

[0045] FIG. 2 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 200 of communication according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 200 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1. It is to be understood that steps and an order of the steps in FIG. 2 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. For example, the order of the steps may be changed. Some of the steps may be omitted or any other suitable additional steps may be added.

[0046] As shown in FIG. 2, at step 210, the terminal device 110 may determine first information comprising at least one of the following: number of antennas, an operation frequency, or channel hardening information.

[0047] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the number of antennas based on at least one of the following: number of antenna ports, number of transmit antenna ports, number of receive antenna ports, number of transceiver units (TXRUs) , number of transmit antennas of the network device 120 serving the terminal device 110, number of receive antennas of the network device 120, number of transmit antennas of the terminal device 110, or number of receive antennas of the terminal device 110. In some embodiments, the number of antennas may be indicated by the network device 120. In some embodiments, the number of antennas may be determined by the terminal device 110.

[0048] In some embodiments, the operation frequency of the terminal device 110 may be in FR3. It is to be noted that the present disclosure may also apply to the operation frequency in FR1 or FR2 or any other frequency ranges. In some embodiments, the operation frequency may be indicated by the network device 120.

[0049] In some embodiments, the channel hardening information may be a verification result regarding whether assumption of channel hardening holds (i.e., whether a channel can be assumed as flat) . In some embodiments, the channel hardening information may comprise an indication of whether the channel hardening holds. For example, the indication may be 0 or 1, or a soft value between 0 and 1. In some embodiments, the channel hardening information may comprise a channel hardening parameter which can be calculated to verify whether the assumption of the channel hardening is valid or not.

[0050] In some embodiments, the channel hardening parameter may comprise a ratio of a first arithmetic operation of a channel parameter per antenna to a second arithmetic operation of the channel parameter over all antennas. In some embodiments, in frequency domain, the channel hardening parameter may comprise a ratio of the first arithmetic operation of the channel parameter per subband to the second arithmetic operation of the channel parameter over a wideband. In some embodiments, in time domain, the channel hardening parameter may comprise a ratio of the first arithmetic operation of the channel parameter per time instance to the second arithmetic operation of the channel parameter over a time window.

[0051] In some embodiments, the channel parameter may comprise at least one of the following: a channel gain, delay spread, Doppler spread, phase, delay, Doppler shift, coherent time, or coherent bandwidth. It is to be noted that any combinations of the above channel parameters or other suitable channel parameters may also be feasible.

[0052] In some embodiments, the first arithmetic operation may be second-order statistic such as variance, standard deviation, covariance, or correlation coefficient, and the second arithmetic operation may be first-order statistic such as mean, medium, or mode. In some alternative embodiments, the first arithmetic operation may be first-order statistic such as mean, medium, or mode, and the second arithmetic operation may be second-order statistic such as variance, standard deviation, covariance, or correlation coefficient. It is to be noted that the first arithmetic operation and the second arithmetic operation may be any suitable statistic parameters.

[0053] Basically, the channel hardening parameter may reflect the second-order statistic (e.g., variance) and the first-order statistic (e.g., mean) and a relationship (e.g., the ratio) between the first-order statistic and the second-order statistic. For example, the channel hardening parameter may be a ratio of the second-order statistic to the first-order statistic (e.g., a ratio of variance to mean) . Alternatively, the channel hardening parameter may be a ratio of the first-order statistic to the second-order statistic (e.g., a ratio of mean to variance) . In some examples, if the ratio is smaller, the channel hardening phenomenon is more significant. In some examples, if the channel hardening parameter is smaller than or equal to a threshold, the channel hardening assumption holds.

[0054] It is to be noted that any combinations of the above channel hardening information may also be feasible.

[0055] It is assumed that assumption of channel hardening holds, i.e., a channel can be assumed as flat. In this case, the terminal device 110 may perform an operation (for convenience, also referred to as a first operation herein) comprising step 220 and / or 230 as described later.

[0056] Continuing to refer to FIG. 2, as shown in step 220, based on the first information, the terminal device 110 may transmit, to the network device 120, a report of a difference between measurement results of a first set of resources and a second set of resources.

[0057] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120, a configuration of measurement and report for the difference. That is, the terminal device 110 may be configured to measure and report the difference. Alternatively, the terminal device 110 may transmit, to the network device 120, a request for the report of the difference. Based on the configuration or a response to the request from the network device 120, the terminal device 110 may transmit the report for the difference.

[0058] In some embodiments, the report may be a CSI report. It is to be noted that any other reports may also be feasible. In some embodiments, the difference between measurement results may comprise RSRP difference, SINR difference, CQI difference, and / or amplitude difference. It is to be noted that any other suitable forms may also be feasible.

[0059] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine a first set of parameters associated with the first information (e.g., the number of antennas, the operation frequency, and / or the channel hardening information) , and transmit the report based on the first set of parameters.

[0060] In some embodiments, parameters in the first set of parameters may be related to quantization of the difference between measurement results of the first and second sets of resources. In other words, the quantization may be dependent on the number of antennas, the operation frequency, and / or the channel hardening information. In some embodiments, the first set of parameters may comprise a step size of the quantization. In some embodiments, the first set of parameters may comprise a quantization range of the quantization.

[0061] In some embodiments, parameters in the first set of parameters may be related to transmission of the difference between measurement results of the first and second set of resources. In some embodiments, the first set of parameters may comprise number of bits for the difference.

[0062] In some embodiments, if the number of antennas or the operation frequency is in a first range, the terminal device 110 may set a parameter in the first set of parameters to be a first value. If the number of antennas or the operation frequency is in a second range, the terminal device 110 may set the parameter in the first set of parameters to be a second value. Values in the second range are greater than values in the first range, and the second value is smaller than the first value. That is, if the number of antennas increases, the step size of quantization, the quantization range, and / or the number of bits for the difference decreases. If the operation frequency is higher, the step size of quantization, the quantization range, and / or the number of bits for the difference decreases.

[0063] In some embodiments, the first set of resources and the second set of resources may comprise frequency domain resources. In some embodiments, the first set of resources may be wideband and the second set of resources may be a subband smaller than the wideband. Alternatively, the first set of resources may be a first subband, and the second set of resources may be a second subband different from the first subband. In some embodiments, the difference between measurement results of the first set of resources and the second set of resources may be subband differential RSRP / SINR / CQI / amplitude.

[0064] For illustration, an example (for convenience, also referred to as a First Example herein) of reporting subband differential RSRP with respect to reference RSRP based on the number of antennas will be described below. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may be configured to measure and report subband RSRP. Alternatively, the terminal device 110 may send information to the network device 120 to request the report of subband RSRP.

[0065] In some embodiments, if the number of antennas increases, the difference between wideband RSRP and subband RSRP decreases, and the difference between RSRP of each subband decreases too.

[0066] To reduce overhead of the report, the subband RSRP can be represented by a differential value (i.e., subband differential RSRP) with respect to the reference RSRP. For example, the report may comprise the reference RSRP and subband differential RSRP. In some embodiments, the reference RSRP may be the wideband RSRP. In some embodiments, the reference RSRP may be the highest subband RSRP among subbands. In some embodiments, the reference RSRP may be RSRP of a certain subband (e.g., the first / last subband) .

[0067] To report the differential value, quantization is needed. In some embodiments, if the number of antennas increases, the terminal device 110 may determine a reduced quantization range. For example, if the channel gain difference in frequency domain are 16 dB with 1 antenna and 2 dB with 128 antennas, there is no need to still use 30dB quantization range as in legacy for reporting the channel gain difference with 128 antennas. For example, the terminal device 110 may determine the quantization range based on Table 1 below. Table 1 In this example, values in Range 1 is smaller than values in Range 2.

[0068] In some embodiments, if the number of antennas increases, the terminal device 110 may determine a reduced step size for the quantization. For example, if the quantization range is 7 dB, finer step size may be used. For example, the terminal device 110 may determine the step size based on Table 2 below. Table 2 In this example, values in Range 1 is smaller than values in Range 2.

[0069] In some embodiments, if the number of antennas increases, the terminal device 110 may determine a reduced number of bits to represent differential RSRP. For example, the number of bits of differential RSRP field in uplink signaling (e.g., uplink control information (UCI) or medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) ) is 4 bits for a smaller number of antennas and 3 bits for a larger number of antennas. For example, the terminal device 110 may determine the number of bits based on Table 3 below. Table 3 In this example, values in Range 1 is smaller than values in Range 2.

[0070] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the quantization autonomously. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may send a request to the network device 120 to adjust configuration of the quantization.

[0071] In some embodiments, the above three factors (the quantization range, the step size and the number of bits) are related. If two of the three factors are known, the rest one can be calculated. For example, relationship among the three factors may be represented as equation (1) below. N = ceil (log2 (Qr  / Ss + X) )                  (1) where N denotes the number of bits, Qr denotes the quantization range, Ss denotes the step  size, and X denotes a constant. X may be e.g., 0, +1, -1, +2, -2, etc., depending on whether to include out-of-range status.

[0072] In some examples, if the number of antennas is greater than a first threshold, which may be 128, 256, etc., there is no need to consider the out-of-range status, e.g., X = 0; otherwise, X = 1.

[0073] In some embodiments, only two of the three factors may be specified, and the rest one can be calculated accordingly. For example, the number of bits and the step size are specified, and the quantization range can be calculated accordingly.

[0074] It is to be noted that an exact combination can be chosen to achieve different design goals, to further reduce a payload size of the report (e.g., by reducing the number of bits) , to have a finer resolution (e.g., by reducing the step size) , or both.

[0075] It is also to be noted that the exact values in the above Tables 1 to 3 are merely for illustration, and are not for limitation. For example, Range 1 may be smaller than or equal to 64, and Range 2 may be larger than 64. It is to be noted that 64 is merely an example, and any other threshold values may also be feasible. In some examples, different or additional ranges of the number of antennas may be considered, e.g., (0, 64] , (64, 128] , (128, 256] , (256, 512] , etc.

[0076] For illustration, an example procedure may be described as below. -If UE is configured to report subband L1-RSRP, the UE shall use differential  L1-RSRP based reporting, where the reference L1-RSRP is quantized to a 7-bit value in the range [-140, -44] dBm with 1dB step size, and the differential L1-RSRP is quantized to a 4-bit value or a 3-bit value based on the number of antennas. The differential L1-RSRP value is computed with 2 dB step size or 1 dB step size based on the number of antennas. with a reference to the wideband L1-RSRP value which is part of the same L1-RSRP reporting instance.

[0077] The previous example is described in connection with RSRP, but the same method applies to other quantities. For example, the same method may apply to signal power such as RSSI or channel gain. The same method may also apply to interference power, noise power, or interference plus noise power. Further, the same method may apply to a ratio between signal power and inference / noise power such as SINR, signal noise ratio (SNR) or RSRQ. In addition, the same method may apply to amplitude, amplitude of correlation of channel, or amplitude of frequency-domain correlation of channel.

[0078] In some examples, the same method may apply to other quantities like CQI. Unlike power or amplitude, which is a measure, CQI-like quantity is an index, e.g., 0-15, to reflect channel quality.

[0079] Subband differential CQI is not uniformly quantized in legacy, as shown in Table 4 below. Table 4

[0080] In some embodiments, for each subband index s, a 2-bit subband differential CQI value is defined as: Subband Offset level (s) = subband CQI index (s) -wideband CQI index. And the mapping from the 2-bit sub-band differential CQI value to the offset level is shown in the Table 4. Alternatively, for each sub-band index s, a 4-bit sub-band CQI value may be reported.

[0081] In some examples, if the number of antennas is greater than the first threshold, the difference between wideband and subband may not be large enough to support different CQI or MCS, thus subband differential CQI may not be supported. Additionally, subband CQI may not be supported too. In some examples, the terminal device 110 does not expect to be configured with subband CQI reporting and / or subband differential CQI reporting if the number of antennas is greater than the first threshold.

[0082] In some examples, if the number of antennas is greater than the first threshold, a different mapping table (e.g., Table 5 below) can be used for subband differential CQI. Table 5

[0083] Compared to Table 4, Table 5 has a smaller offset level, and / or, has less values. With Table 5, an effective subband CQI index is either (wideband CQI index + 1) or (wideband CQI index –1) . In addition, the terminal device 110 may not report subband CQI or subband differential CQI for those subbands which have the same CQI as the wideband CQI, e.g., offset level equals 0. Instead, the terminal device 110 may report those subbands which have the same CQI as the wideband CQI via explicit indication, bitmap, etc. For example, for 4 subbands, the terminal device 110 may report a bit map ‘1010’ to indicate that subband CQI or subband differential CQI for the first subband and the third subband will be reported.

[0084] Alternatively, for each subband index s, a subband CQI may be reported, instead of subband differential CQI. Table 6 shows an example of 4-bit wideband CQI in legacy. For subband CQI, a further table different from Table 6 may be used if the number of antennas is greater than the first threshold. Table 6

[0085] For example, the further table may have less values of CQI index, and / or have a smaller offset between modulation, code rate or efficiency for each CQI index. ‘Smaller’ means that comparing to the legacy Table 6 (e.g., the offset between efficiency corresponding to CQI index 14 and 15 is (5.5547 –5.1152) ) , for the further table used for subband CQI, the offset between efficiency corresponding to CQI index 14 and 15 may be smaller than (5.5547 –5.1152) .

[0086] In some embodiments, the same modulation can be assumed. If the further table can be used when the number of antennas is greater than the first threshold, then the terminal device 110 may only report indication of modulation for wideband, and indication of code rate for subband. In some embodiments, if the further table can be used when the number of antennas is greater than the first threshold, then the terminal device 110 may only report indication of modulation for one subband, and indication of code rate for each subband. In some embodiments, indication of modulation and indication of code rate may be separate indications or be represented by the CQI index or group of CQI index.

[0087] In some embodiments, the first set of resources and the second set of resources may comprise time domain resources. In some embodiments, the first set of resources may be a first set of time instances, and the second set of resources may be a second set of time instances. A time length occupied by the second set of time instances is less than a time length occupied by the first set of time instances. Alternatively, the first set of resources may be a third set of time instances, and the second set of resources may be a fourth set of time instances earlier than or later than or not overlapped with the third set of time instances. In some embodiments, the difference between measurement results of the first set of resources and the second set of resources may be differential RSRP / SINR / CQI / amplitude across multiple time instances.

[0088] In some embodiments, the first set of resources and the second set of resources may comprise antenna domain resources, for example, antennas, antenna elements, antenna ports, TXRUs. In some embodiments, the first set of resources may be a first set of antennas, and the second set of resources may be a second set of antennas. The number of antennas in the second set is less than the number of antennas in the first set. Alternatively, the first set of antennas and the second set of antennas are not overlapping. In some embodiments, the difference between measurement results of the first set of antennas and the second set of antennas may be differential RSRP / SINR / CQI / amplitude across multiple antennas.

[0089] For illustration, an example (for convenience, also referred to as a Second Example herein) of reporting differential RSRP across multiple time instances based on the number of antennas will be described. In some embodiments, if the number of antennas increases, the difference between RSRP measured at different time instances decreases. If the number of antennas increases, the difference between RSRP measured at one time instance and reference RSRP across a time window decreases.

[0090] To reduce the report overhead, the RSRP at one time instance can be represented by a differential value with respect to the reference RSRP across the time window. In some embodiments, the report may comprise the reference RSRP and differential RSRP of one time instance. In some embodiments, the report may comprise the reference RSRP and instantaneous differential RSRP. In some embodiments, the reference RSRP may be averaged RSRP over the time window. In some embodiments, the reference RSRP may be the highest RSRP among all time instances.

[0091] To report the differential value, quantization is needed. In some embodiments, if the number of antennas increases, the terminal device 110 may determine a reduced quantization range, a reduced step size for the quantization, and / or a reduced number of bits to represent differential RSRP across time instances. Other details of the quantization in the Second Example are similar as that described for the subband differential RSRP in the First Example and thus are not repeated here for conciseness.

[0092] The same method may apply to other quantities besides RSRP: signal power such as RSSI, channel gain, interference power, noise power, interference plus noise power, ratio between signal power and inference / noise power such as SINR, SNR, RSRQ, amplitude, amplitude of correlation of channel, amplitude of time-domain correlation of channel, or amplitude in time-domain channel property (TDCP) report.

[0093] Similar as the Tables 1 to 6, a mapping table may be used for the relationship between the quantization and the channel hardening parameter, including threshold values, ranges, and applied values and so on.

[0094] It is to be noted that the first set of resources and the second set of resources may also comprise both frequency domain resources and time domain resources. In some embodiments, the first set of resources and the second set of resources may be represented by configured resources of RSs.

[0095] In summary, a measurement report transmission may be carried out based on the number of antennas, operation frequency and / or channel hardening information. Thus, overhead of report and indication may be saved.

[0096] Continuing to refer to FIG. 2, as shown in step 230, based on the first information, the terminal device 110 may perform a partition of resources. In other words, the partition of resources may be associated with the number of antennas, operation frequency and / or channel hardening information.

[0097] In some embodiments, the partition of resources may be used for channel measurement and report by the terminal device 110, e.g., CSI report. In some embodiments, the partition of resources may be used for channel measurement by the network device 120, e.g., SRS transmission. In some embodiments, the partition of resources may be used for precoding. In some embodiments, the partition of resources may be used for resource allocation.

[0098] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine a second set of parameters associated with the first information, and perform the partition of resources based on the second set of parameters. In some embodiments, the second set of parameters may comprise at least one of the following: number of partitions, a partition size, or a payload size.

[0099] In some embodiments, if the number of antennas or the operation frequency is in a third range, the terminal device 110 may set the number of partitions to be a third value. If the number of antennas or the operation frequency is in a fourth range, the terminal device 110 may set the number of partitions to be a fourth value. Values in the fourth range are greater than values in the third range, and the fourth value is smaller than the third value. That is, if the number of antennas increases, the number of partitions decreases. If the operation frequency is higher, the number of partitions decreases.

[0100] In some embodiments, if the number of antennas or the operation frequency is in a fifth range, the terminal device 110 may set the partition size to be a fifth value. If the number of antennas or the operation frequency is in a sixth range, the terminal device 110 may set the partition size to be a sixth value. Values in the sixth range are greater than values in the fifth range, and the sixth value is greater than the fifth value. That is, if the number of antennas increases, the partition size increases. If the operation frequency is higher, the partition size increases.

[0101] In some embodiments, the partition of resources may be used for frequency domain resources. In this case, the partition size may comprise a subband size for a CSI report. In DL, a subband size is usually defined for CSI report per subband, which reflects difference of channel status between frequencies. Currently, a subband size is based on a size of bandwidth part (BWP) , i.e., based on a bandwidth. According to embodiments of the present disclosure, a subband size may be based on the number of antennas, operation frequency and / or channel hardening information.

[0102] In some embodiments, the partition size may comprise a subband size for an SRS transmission. In UL, a subband may refer to a subband of SRS transmission, which helps the network device 120 to measure a channel per subband.

[0103] In some embodiments, the partition size may comprise a precoding resource block group (PRG) size. For DL and / or UL, the terminal device 110 may assume that the same precoding is applied for any downlink and / or uplink contiguous allocation of physical resource blocks in a PRG.

[0104] In some embodiments, the partition size may comprise an RBG size. For both DL and UL, RBGs are allocated to a scheduled terminal device where a RBG is a set of consecutive virtual or physical resource blocks.

[0105] It is to be noted that, the operation frequency is also equivalent to a frequency range an operation band belongs to, or the operation band. ‘higher / lower’ means higher / lower carrier frequency, e.g., 3.5GHz (FR1) is lower than 7.5 GHz (FR3) , which is lower than 28 GHz (FR2) .

[0106] In some embodiments, the partition of resources may be used for time domain resources. In this case, the partition size may comprise at least one of the following: a periodicity or time interval or number of time units for channel measurement and report; a periodicity or time interval or number of time units for transmission; or a periodicity or time interval or number of time units for resource allocation.

[0107] A larger subband / PRG / RBG size means less number of subbands / PRGs / RBGs. In some embodiments, the payload size may comprise at least one of the following: a payload size of a subband CSI report; a payload size of a subband indication for an SRS transmission; or a payload size of a resource allocation indication in terms of PRGs or RBGs.

[0108] In some embodiments, if the number of antennas or the operation frequency is in a seventh range, the terminal device 110 may set the payload size to be a seventh value. If the number of antennas or the operation frequency is in an eighth range, the terminal device 110 may set the payload size to be an eighth value. Values in the eighth range are greater than values in the seventh range, and the eighth value is smaller than the seventh value. That is, if the number of antennas increases, the payload size decreases. If the operation frequency is higher, the payload size decreases.

[0109] For illustration, an example (for convenience, also referred to as a Third Example herein) of determining a subband size for CSI report based on the number of antennas will be described below.

[0110] The subband size may depend on the number of antennas. The more the antennas are, the larger the subband size would be. It is assumed that M denotes the number of antennas. A subband size may also depend on a BWP size (counted in number of physical resource blocks (PRBs) ) , and may be configured (e.g., a value is chosen from two configurable values) as shown in Table 7 below. Table 7

[0111] In some embodiments, wideband CSI report is assumed if M > the first threshold, which may be 128, 256, etc. In other words, the terminal device 110 expects that wideband CSI report is configured if M > the first threshold, or the terminal device 110 does not expect to be configured with subband CSI report.

[0112] In some embodiments, the subband size can be larger, when the number of antennas increases. It is to be noted that ‘larger’ means larger than a legacy size. If a determined subband size is larger than the BWP size, or BWP size / subband size < 2, wideband CSI report is assumed. Some example embodiments will be described below.

[0113] In some embodiments, if M > a second threshold, which may be 32, 64, etc., the terminal device 110 may apply the larger subband size value if multiple subband sizes are available. For example, in Table 7, for BWP size 145-275, if M > the second threshold, the subband size is 32 PRBs, and if M ≤ the second threshold, the subband size is 16 PRBs.

[0114] In some embodiments, Table 8 below may be additionally defined for M > a second threshold. Compared to Table 7, Table 8 may have a larger subband size than that for FR1, when the BWP size is the same or in the same range. If M > the second threshold, which may be 32, 64, etc., the terminal device 110 may apply Table 8 to determine the subband size. If M ≤ the second threshold, the terminal device 110 may apply Table 7 to determine the subband size. Table 8

[0115] It is to be noted that, Table 8 is merely an example, and there may also be more than one subband size per BWP size range.

[0116] In some embodiments, the subband size may be a function of the number of antennas, e.g., as shown in Table 9 for BWP size 145-275. Table 9

[0117] Considering both the impact of the BWP size and the configurable subband size, Table 10 may be considered, e.g., subband size is a function of the number of antennas and the BWP size. Table 10

[0118] In above examples, current BWP size is assumed, e.g., 24-72, 73-144, 145-275. It is to be noted that the range of BWP size may also be any other suitable ranges.

[0119] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the subband size autonomously based on one or more of the Tables 7-10 defined. Alternatively, the terminal device 110 may transmit a request to the network device 120 to adjust the subband size.

[0120] For illustration, an example (for convenience, also referred to as a Fourth Example herein) of determining a subband size for CSI report based on the operation frequency will be described below.

[0121] The subband size may depend on the operation frequency. The higher the operation frequency is, the larger the subband size would be. The lower the operation frequency is, the smaller the subband size would be. In some embodiments, subband size in FR1 ≤ subband size in FR3, and / or subband size in FR3 ≤ subband size in FR2. Currently, wideband is commonly assumed in FR2. Thus, FR1 and FR3 may be mainly considered here.

[0122] There may be several methods to support a larger subband size in FR3 than FR1. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may apply the larger value in Table 7 defined for FR1 so that an effective table in FR3 is defined as shown in Table 11 below. That is, the terminal device 110 may determine the subband size based on Table 11. Table 11

[0123] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may define a different table for FR3, which has a larger subband size than that for FR1, when the BWP size is the same or in the same range, e.g., as shown in Table 12 below. That is, the terminal device 110 may determine the subband size based on Table 12. Table 12

[0124] In above examples, current BWP size is assumed, e.g., 24-72, 73-144, 145-275. It is to be noted that the range of BWP size may also be any other suitable ranges.

[0125] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the subband size autonomously based on one or more of the Tables 11-12 defined. Alternatively, the terminal device 110 may transmit a request to the network device 120 to adjust the subband size.

[0126] In some embodiments, the subband size may depend on both the number of antennas and the operation frequency (FR1 or FR3) . Table 13 below shows a subband size as a function of the number of antennas and the BWP size for FR1 and FR3. Table 13

[0127] It is to be noted that the FR1 / FR3 difference herein may refer to different subband sizes, or different ranges of number of antennas, or different ranges of BWP size, or different threshold values to determine the subband size.

[0128] For illustration, an example (for convenience, also referred to as a Fifth Example herein) of determining a PRG size based on the number of antennas and / or the operation frequency will be described below.

[0129] In some embodiments, the PRG size may depend on the number of antennas. The more the antennas are, the larger the PRG size would be. Table 14 below shows a PRG size as a function of the number of antennas. Table 14

[0130] In some embodiments, the PRG size may depend on the operation frequency. The higher the operation frequency are, the larger the PRG size would be. Table 15 below shows a PRG size as a function of the operation frequency. Table 15

[0131] The terminal device 110 may assume that precoding granularity is P′BWP, i consecutive resource blocks in the frequency domain. In some embodiments, P′BWP, i may be equal to one of the values among {2, 4, wideband} . In some embodiments, a value of P′BWP, i may be based on the number of antennas and operation frequency.

[0132] In some embodiments, P′BWP, i may be equal to one of the values among {4, 8, 16, wideband} if the number of antennas is larger than a threshold. It is to be noted that {4, 8, 16, wideband} is just for example, and other values larger than 4 may be included. In some embodiments, P′BWP, i may be equal to a larger value than 4 if the number of antennas is larger than a threshold. Alternatively, if the number of antennas is larger than the threshold, wideband is assumed, i.e., there is no frequency partition.

[0133] In some embodiments, P′BWP, i may be equal to one of the values among {4, 8, 16, wideband} if the operation frequency is higher. In some embodiments, P′BWP, i may be equal to a larger value than 4 if the operation frequency is larger. Alternatively, if the operation frequency is larger than a threshold, a wideband is assumed.

[0134] In some embodiments, if P′BWP, i is determined as ‘wideband’ , the terminal device 110 is not expected to be scheduled with non-contiguous PRBs and the terminal device 110 may assume that the same precoding is applied to the allocated resource associated with a same TCI state or a same QCL assumption.

[0135] In some embodiments, if P′BWP, i is determined as one of the values among {2, 4, 8, 16} , i.e., not wideband, PRGs partition the bandwidth part i with P′BWP, i consecutive PRBs. Actual number of consecutive PRBs in each PRG may be one or more.

[0136] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may assume that the same precoding is applied for any downlink contiguous allocation of PRBs in a PRG.

[0137] In some embodiments, the first PRG size is given by and the last PRG size is given by if and the last PRG size is P′BWP, i if where denotes a starting PRB of common frequency resource (CFR) , and denotes the CFR.

[0138] Similar as the Tables 7 to 15, a mapping table may be used for the relationship between the partition size / number of partitions / payload size and the channel hardening parameter, including threshold values, ranges, and applied values and so on.

[0139] So far, the partition of resources may be carried out based on the number of antennas, operation frequency and / or channel hardening information. Thus, overhead of report and indication may be reduced, and complexity of measurement may also be reduced.

[0140] Continuing to refer to FIG. 2, as shown in step 240, the network device 120 may similarly determine the first information, and perform, based on the first information, an operation comprising: receiving the report of the difference between measurement results of the first and second sets of resources, and / or determining the partition of resources. The above embodiments described for the terminal device 110 may also apply to the network device 120, and thus other details are not repeated here for conciseness.

[0141] Generally, whether channel hardening holds is not only related to the number of antennas, but also based on other factors such as the correlation among antennas, channel conditions like number of dominant paths, etc. Thus, it is better to verify whether the assumption of channel hardening holds by real measurement and the verification results should be aware at the network device 120 and / or the terminal device 110. The verification results may be the above channel hardening information.

[0142] In some embodiments, the assumption of channel hardening does not hold by default. In some embodiments, the assumption of channel hardening does not hold if the number of antennas is smaller than a first threshold. In some embodiments, the network device 120 may configure a larger quantitation and / or a smaller partition and then update with a smaller quantitation and / or a larger partition if the measurements validate the assumption of channel hardening.

[0143] Alternatively, the assumption of channel hardening holds by default. In some embodiments, the assumption of channel hardening holds if the number of antennas is greater than a second threshold. In some embodiments, the network device 120 may configure a smaller quantitation and / or a larger partition and then update with a larger quantitation and / or a smaller partition if the measurements disprove the assumption of channel hardening.

[0144] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may configure transmission of UL reference signals to check whether the assumption of channel hardening holds. Detailed description will be given in connection with FIG. 3.

[0145] FIG. 3 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 300 of checking assumption of channel hardening according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 300 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 300 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1. It is to be understood that steps and an order of the steps in FIG. 3 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. For example, the order of the steps may be changed. Some of the steps may be omitted or any other suitable additional steps may be added.

[0146] As shown in FIG. 3, at step 310, the network device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device 110, a configuration of a transmission of a set of UL reference signals (e.g., SRS) for checking channel hardening.

[0147] At step 320, the terminal device 110 may transmit the set of uplink reference signals to the network device 120 based on the configuration.

[0148] At step 330, the network device 120 may perform measurement to get the channel hardening information. In some embodiments, the network device 120 may compare the measurement of a first set of antennas, and measurement of a second set of antennas. Alternatively, to check the frequency selectivity, the network device 120 may compare the measurement of a first set of frequency resources and the measurement of a second set of frequency resources. Alternatively, to check the time-domain variation, the network device 120 may compare the measurement of a first set of time resources and the measurement of a second set of time resources.

[0149] At step 340, the network device 120 may provide, to the terminal device 110, a configuration for the first operation based on whether the assumption of channel hardening holds. In some embodiments, the network device 120 may indicate whether the assumption of channel hardening holds to the terminal device 110, and the terminal device 110 may perform selection of quantization of report and partition of time / frequency resources as described in FIG. 2.

[0150] In some embodiments, the configuration of the first operation may comprise at least one of the following: the channel hardening information; a configuration of the quantization; a configuration of the partition of resources; or a configuration of the channel measurement and report. In some embodiments, the configuration of channel measurement and report may comprise at least one of the following: periodicity of a DL reference signal, periodicity of a measurement of the DL reference signal, periodicity of a reporting of the measurement, or density of the DL reference signal. In some embodiments, the configuration of the first operation may comprise a configuration of UL signals. In some embodiments, the configuration of the UL signals may comprise at least one of the following: periodicity of a UL reference signal, or density of the UL reference signal.

[0151] In other words, the configuration of the first operation may comprise quantization of reported differences among resources (e.g., the First and Second Examples) , partition of resources (e.g., the Third to Fifth Examples) , or their updates. For example, if the channel hardening coefficient becomes higher, compared to a previous configuration, the network device 120 may reduce the quantization range / step size / number of bits in the related filed for reported differential value (e.g., for the First and Second Examples) , or increase the subband / PRG / RBG size (e.g., for the Third to Fifth Examples) .

[0152] Additionally, configurations of the RS, measurement, and / or reporting may also be adaptive. For example, the configuration of the first operation may comprise periodicity of RS, measurement and / or report. The periodicity of RS, measurement and / or report may be larger if the first assumption holds, or if the channel hardening parameter becomes higher. In another example, the configuration of the first operation may comprise density of RS, including frequency domain density, and / or time domain density. The density of RS may be lower if the first assumption holds, or if the channel hardening parameter becomes higher. It is to be noted that ‘channel hardening parameter becomes higher’ means the ratio of variance to mean decreases.

[0153] So far, a procedure to check the assumption of channel hardening by UL transmission and NW measurement is described. It is to be understood that operations described in the process 300 may be carried out separately or in any suitable combinations.

[0154] In some alternative embodiments, the network device 120 may configure a measurement and report to check whether the assumption of channel hardening holds. Detailed description will be given in connection with FIG. 4.

[0155] FIG. 4 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating another example process 400 of checking assumption of channel hardening according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 400 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 400 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1. It is to be noted that steps and an order of the steps in FIG. 4 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. For example, the order of the steps may be changed. Some of the steps may be omitted or any other suitable additional steps may be added.

[0156] As shown in FIG. 4, at step 410, the network device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device 110, a configuration indicating a report of at least one of: the channel hardening information, or a recommendation on a configuration of the first operation (i.e., adjustment recommendation of configurations) . In some embodiments, the configuration may be a configuration of measurement and report. The measurement may be based on DL RS. The report quantity may be configured as the channel hardening information, and / or adjustment recommendation of configurations.

[0157] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may configure RS transmission from different antennas. In some embodiments, the network device 120 may configure a first subband size of RS transmission. In some embodiments, the network device 120 may configure a time period of RS transmission.

[0158] At step 420, the terminal device 110 may perform the measurement. Based on the configuration of measurement and report, the terminal device 110 may compare the measurement of a first set of antennas and measurement of a second set of antennas, and calculate the channel hardening parameter. Alternatively, to check the frequency selectivity, the terminal device 110 may compare the measurement of a first set of frequency resources and the measurement of a second set of frequency resources. Alternatively, to check the time-domain variation, the terminal device 110 may compare the measurement of a first set of time resources and the measurement of a second set of time resources.

[0159] At step 430, the terminal device 110 may report the at least one of the channel hardening information or the recommendation on configuration of the first operation.

[0160] At step 440, the network device 120 may update the configuration of the first operation based on the reporting from the terminal device 110. The details about the configuration are the same as that described in the step 340, and thus are not repeated here for conciseness.

[0161] So far, a procedure to check the assumption of channel hardening by DL RS measurement and report is described. It is to be noted that operations described in the process 400 may be carried out separately or in any suitable combinations.

[0162] It is also to be noted that operations described in the processes 200, 300 and 400 may be carried out in any suitable combinations.EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF METHODS

[0163] Corresponding to the above processes, embodiments of the present disclosure provide methods of communication implemented at a terminal device and at a network device. These methods will be described below with reference to FIGs. 5 and 6.

[0164] FIG. 5 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 500 of communication implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, the method 500 may be performed at the terminal device 110 as shown in FIG. 1. For the purpose of discussion, in the following, the method 500 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. It is to be understood that the method 500 may include additional blocks not shown and / or may omit some blocks as shown, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0165] At block 510, the terminal device 110 may determine first information comprising at least one of number of antennas, an operation frequency, or channel hardening information.

[0166] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the number of antennas based on at least one of the following: number of antenna ports, number of transmit antenna ports, number of receive antenna ports, number of TXRUs, number of transmit antennas of a network device serving the terminal device, number of receive antennas of the network device, number of transmit antennas of the terminal device, or number of receive antennas of the terminal device.

[0168] At block 520, the terminal device 110 may perform, based on the first information, an operation comprising at least one of the following: transmitting, to a network device, a report of a difference between measurement results of a first set of resources and a second set of resources, or performing a partition of resources.

[0169] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may transmit the report by: determining a first set of parameters associated with the first information, the first set of parameters comprising at least one of the following: a step size for quantization of the difference, a quantization range of the quantization, or number of bits for the difference; and transmitting the report based on the first set of parameters.

[0170] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the first set of parameters by: in accordance with a determination that the number of antennas or the operation frequency is in a first range, setting a parameter in the first set of parameters to be a first value; and in accordance with a determination that the number of antennas or the operation frequency is in a second range, setting the parameter to be a second value, wherein values in the second range are greater than values in the first range, and the second value is smaller than the first value.

[0171] In some embodiments, the difference between measurement results may comprise at least one of the following: a RSRP difference; a SINR difference; a CQI difference; or an amplitude difference.

[0183] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120, a configuration of a transmission of a set of uplink reference signals for checking channel hardening; transmit the set of uplink reference signals to the network device 120 based on the configuration; and receive, from the network device 120, a configuration of the operation comprising at least one of the following: the channel hardening information, a configuration of the quantization, a configuration of the partition of resources, or a configuration of channel measurement and report.
