Description

[0001] Cross-reference to related applications

[0002] This application claims the benefit of priority to U.S. Patent Application No. 63 / 493,448, filed March 31, 2023, entitled “Personal Care Compositions,” the contents of which are incorporated herein in their entirety for all purposes. Background Technology

[0003] Personal care compositions, such as antiperspirant or deodorant compositions, can be used to reduce body odor. Antiperspirant or deodorant compositions can be applied to the armpit (underarm) area to stop or treat sweating, limit the growth of odor-causing bacteria, or apply fragrance. Antiperspirant or deodorant compositions can be delivered topically as roll-on, gel, cream, stick, or aerosol formulations.

[0004] Underarm deodorants and antiperspirants typically control odor by eliminating odor-causing bacteria. Conventional antiperspirant salts, such as aluminum and / or zirconium salts, tend to be acidic in aqueous solutions, a property that makes them effective bactericides, thus providing deodorizing benefits. Furthermore, long-lasting antiperspirant compositions often contain increased amounts of active ingredients as a means of achieving sustained effectiveness. However, skin sensitivity and vulnerability to various compounds may limit the practically maximum concentration in personal care compositions.

[0005] Aluminum salts are typically the active ingredient in antiperspirant products. In recent years, there has been increasing consumer pressure to reduce or remove aluminum salts from antiperspirant or deodorant products. However, replacing aluminum salts in antiperspirant and deodorant products while maintaining the same sweat-blocking properties that consumers value is a challenge in the personal care compositions industry. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

[0049] Figure 1is a histogram depicting sweat reduction achieved by the non-limiting exemplary personal care composition according to one aspect of the present application. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0050] The principles of the application are described by reference to various exemplary embodiments of the application for purposes of illustration only. While certain embodiments of the application are specifically adapted to other compositions and methods, and can be used therein, as will be apparent to one of ordinary skill in the art, having the benefit of this disclosure. Before the present compositions and methods are disclosed and described, it is to be understood that the application is not limited to the specific embodiments

[0051] As used herein and in the appended claims, the singular forms "a," "an," and "the" include plural reference unless the context dictates otherwise. The singular form of any of the ingredients of any class refers not only to one chemical substance in that class, but also to mixtures of these chemical substances. The terms "a," "an," "one or more," and "at least one" are used interchangeably herein. The terms "comprising," "including," and "having" can be used interchangeably. The term "comprising" is to be construed as "including, but not limited to." The term "comprising" is to be construed as "including, but not limited to."

[0052] As used throughout, ranges are used as shorthand for describing each and every value and sub-range within the range. Any value within the range can be selected as the terminus of the range. Thus, 1 to 5 specifically includes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as sub-ranges such as 2 to 5, 3 to 5, 2 to 3, 2 to 4, 1 to 4, etc.

[0053] The term "about" when referring to a number means any number that is within 10% of that number. For example, the phrase "about 2% by weight" means a number that is between 1.8% and 2.2% by weight and includes 1.8% and 2.2% by weight.

[0054] All references cited herein are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety. In the event of a conflict in terminology between definitions in the present disclosure and those set forth in the cited references, the definitions set forth in the present disclosure control.

[0055] Abbreviations and symbols as used herein take their ordinary meaning unless otherwise stated. The abbreviation "wt%" means weight percent relative to the weight of the personal care composition. The symbol "°" means degrees, for example, degrees of temperature or degrees of an angle. The symbols "h", "min", "mL", "nm", and "pm" mean hours, minutes, milliliters, nanometers, and micrometers, respectively. The abbreviation "UV-VIS" in reference to a spectrometer or spectroscopy means ultraviolet-visible. The abbreviation "rpm" means revolutions per minute.

[0056] In reference to chemical structures and names, the symbols "C", "H", and "O" mean carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, respectively. The symbols "-", "=", and "≡" mean single, double, and triple bonds, respectively.

[0057] "Volatile" as used herein means a flash point below about 100 °C. "Non-volatile" as used herein means a flash point above about 100 °C.

[0058] Any member of a list of species used to exemplify or define a genus can be mutually exclusive from, overlapping with, a subset of, identical to, nearly identical to, or the same as any other member of the list of species. Furthermore, unless explicitly stated, a list of species defining or exemplifying a genus is open, and gives rise to the possibility that other species defining or exemplifying the genus as good as or better than any other species listed can exist, for example when a Markush group is recited.

[0059] The phrase "mixtures thereof", "combinations thereof", or "combinations of two or more thereof" does not require that the mixture contain all of A, B, C, D, E, and F (although it can contain all of A, B, C, D, E, and F). Rather, it indicates that a mixture can contain any two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F. In other words, it is equivalent to the phrase "one or more members selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, and mixtures of any two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F". Likewise, the term "salts thereof" also refers to "salts of the same". Thus, where the disclosure refers to "a member selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, salts thereof, and mixtures thereof", it indicates that it can include one or more of A, B, C, D, and F, it can include one or more of a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F, or it can include a mixture of any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F.

[0060] All components and elements set forth affirmatively in the disclosure can be excluded negatively from the claims. In other words, the personal care compositions of the present disclosure can be free or substantially free of all components and elements recited affirmatively throughout the disclosure. In some cases, the personal care compositions of the present disclosure can be substantially free of non-incidental amounts of the ingredients or compounds described herein. A non-incidental amount of an ingredient or compound is the amount of that ingredient or compound added individually to the personal care composition. For example, a personal care composition can be substantially free of non-incidental amounts of an ingredient or compound, although such ingredient or compound can be present as part of a raw material included as a blend of two or more compounds.

[0061] Some of the various classes of components identified can overlap. In such cases where overlap can exist and the personal care composition includes two components (or the composition includes more than two overlapping components), the overlapping compound does not represent more than one component. For example, certain compounds can be referred to as both emulsifiers and surfactants. If a particular personal care includes both emulsifiers and surfactants, the compound that can be referred to as both an emulsifier and a surfactant would only act as one or the other - not both.

[0062] For purposes of readability, chemical functional groups are in their adjective form; for each adjective, the word "group" is assumed. For example, the adjective "alkyl" without a noun following it should be interpreted as "alkyl group."

[0063] As used herein, the term "antiperspirant" refers to a product that is applied topically to reduce the production of sweat (perspiration) at the site. As used herein, "reduce" in the context of the term "reduce perspiration" means to lower or lessen the moisture, sweat, or perspiration of the area to which it is applied. As used herein, the term "deodorant" refers to an agent that inhibits odor-causing bacteria that make perspiration odor.

[0065] The personal care composition can provide a reduction in perspiration of about 40% or more. For example, the personal care composition can provide a reduction in perspiration of about 40% or more as compared to a personal care composition having the same formulation except that it comprises an additional carrier (e.g., water) in place of the gluconolactone, lactobionic acid, maltobionic acid, galacturonolactone, glucuronolactone, galacturonolactone, gulonicolactone, ribonolactone, glucarolactone, panduratinolactone, glucoheptonolactone, mannuronolactone, galactoheptonolactone, an acid thereof, a salt thereof, or a combination of two or more thereof. In certain embodiments, the personal care composition provides a reduction in perspiration of about 45% or more, about 50% or more, about 53% or more, about 59% or more, about 62% or more, about 64% or more, about 66% or more, or about 68% or more. For example, the personal care composition can provide a reduction in perspiration of about 50% to about 68%, about 53% to about 68%, about 56% to about 68%, about 59% to about 68%, about 62% to about 68%; about 50% to about 65%, about 53% to about 65%, about 56% to about 65%, about 59% to about 65%, about 62% to about 65%; about 50% to about 62%, about 53% to about 62%, about 56% to about 62%, about 59% to about 62%, or any range or sub-range thereof. The reduction in perspiration disclosed above can be achieved over a 24 hour period of application.

[0066] The personal care composition can achieve reduction in perspiration while being substantially free or free of certain conventional antiperspirant compositions, such as aluminum-based antiperspirant actives, zirconium-based antiperspirant actives, zinc-based antiperspirant actives, titanium-based antiperspirant actives, iron-based antiperspirant actives, and / or magnesium-based antiperspirant actives. [0112]

[0113] Example 2

[0114] A personal care composition having a gum base backbone (Composition B) was prepared according to aspects of the present application. Composition B contained 2 wt% gluconolactone. A comparative composition (Comparative Composition 1) was prepared that had the same formulation as Composition B except that Comparative Composition 1 had an additional 2 wt% water in place of the gluconolactone. The formulation of Composition B and Comparative Composition 1 is shown in Table 2 (below).

[0115]

[0116] Composition B and Comparative Composition 1 were evaluated to assess sweat reduction. Specifically, a thermal imaging study was conducted to evaluate the performance and efficacy of Composition B. The thermal imaging study simulated the performance of Composition B and Comparative Composition 1 under real life conditions. Baseline was collected by having a human subject wear a 100% cotton T-shirt while performing an aerobic exercise. Immediately thereafter, the T-shirt was collected and the retained sweat was recorded using a thermal imager. On the following day, at least 2 hours prior to exercise, Composition B was applied to one of the subject's underarms while Comparative Composition 1 was applied to the other of the subject's underarms. Thermal imaging was then performed.

[0117] The thermal imaging results indicated that Composition B provided about a 62% reduction in sweat relative to Comparative Composition 1.
