AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing storage systems cannot effectively maintain the hierarchical information of data in multi-layered storage systems when taking and restoring snapshots, leading to performance degradation and wear and tear on storage devices.

Method used

By introducing tiered snapshot technology into the storage system, data is recorded and mapped and restored using tiered information. This ensures that snapshots are placed in the optimal storage tier based on the tiered information during restoration, maintaining data activity and reducing wear and tear on storage devices.

Benefits of technology

It enables the proper placement of data in a multi-tiered storage system during snapshot operations, ensuring the quality of user data services and reducing wear and tear on storage devices, thereby optimizing the performance and reliability of the storage system.

Abstract

An apparatus includes at least one processing device configured to, for a given data portion of a layered-aware snapshot to be restored to a target storage system comprising a set of two or more storage tiers, determine tiering information characterizing a given storage tier in which the given data portion was stored when the layered-aware snapshot was taken. The at least one processing device is further configured to select one of the storage tiers of the target storage system based at least in part on the determined tiering information and a storage tier mapping policy that maps the given storage tier to the set of two or more storage tiers of the target storage system. The at least one processing device is further configured to restore the layered-aware snapshot to the target storage system by storing the given data portion in the selected storage tier.
