AI Technical Summary
Conventional disc brakes, especially those with fixed calipers, face challenges in space efficiency and weight due to the need for additional space for electromechanical actuators, which restricts the turning circle and design freedom of the wheel.
The arrangement involves a wheel with a rim, hub section, and spoke, and a caliper brake with a brake disc, caliper housing, and brake piston device. The brake piston device and electromechanical actuator are positioned on the side of the caliper housing facing the vehicle interior, allowing the brake disc's friction ring to be closer to the wheel's spoke, thus optimizing space usage.
This configuration enhances space efficiency within the wheel, allows for a larger turning circle, and provides greater design freedom for the wheel's mechanical properties, including reduced weight and improved attachment mechanics.

Abstract
Description
[0001] The invention relates to an arrangement with a wheel of a vehicle and a caliper brake according to the preamble of claim 1, a floating caliper brake according to the independent claim 7 and a vehicle according to the independent claim 10. For the prior art, reference is made, for example, to DE 10 2019 134 424 A1.
[0002] There are several different types of disc brakes. These include, for example, the so-called fixed-caliper brake, which is characterized by the fact that the brake caliper carrying the brake pistons is fixed, i.e. essentially immobile, to the wheel suspension. This requires brake pistons on both sides of the brake disc, which act on the brake disc directly or, in particular via the respective brake pads, indirectly by means of contact force. In the so-called floating-caliper brake, the inner brake pad is pressed against the brake disc by a piston and the outer pad by a movable caliper. This means that the brake fluid does not have to be guided past the possibly hot brake disc to a piston on the other side, as is the case with a fixed-caliper brake.
[0003] In conventional disc brakes, the force is typically transferred to the brake piston(s) hydraulically. A pressure-generating device, such as a brake pedal or a coupled brake booster, is used to pressurize a hydraulic fluid in a hydraulic channel running through the brake caliper during braking. This hydraulic fluid, in turn, exerts a contact force on the brake pistons coupled to this hydraulic channel. This contact force is transferred to the brake disc via the brake pistons and, if present, a brake pad connected to them, thereby decelerating the disc.
[0004] Purely electromechanical brake types are also known, primarily for use as parking brakes, in which either the braking impulse, the transmission of the required energy, or the actuation of the braking elements (e.g., brake shoes) is carried out electrically and without the use of a hydraulic circuit. Due to many advantages over conventional hydraulic or pneumatic braking systems, such as better controllability, the elimination of a braking device, the avoidance of brake fluid, and simplified diagnostics and maintenance, there is currently a clear trend in the automotive industry toward electric motor-operated braking systems, and in particular electric motor-operated friction brakes. However, if an electromechanical actuator is used to drive the brake piston(s) instead of a hydraulic system, the design requirements for the entire brake caliper also generally change. This often results in the problem that at least one electromechanical actuator must be installed to move the brake piston(s). This requires additional installation space (which is not always available) and increases the weight of the brake caliper. Compared to other brake caliper designs (such as floating calipers or floating calipers), the fixed caliper also offers aesthetic advantages. DE 10 2019 134 424 A1 describes a solution to this problem for a fixed caliper.
[0005] Due to the thermal stress on the brake disc and the resulting temperature gradient, it fundamentally deforms when heat is applied. The disc geometry, including the brake disc chamber, creates a force balance in the axial direction to counteract the shielding effect of the brake disc. The brake caliper position is fundamentally limited to the outside of the vehicle by these boundary conditions. In particular, the brake caliper concept, which is built in the axial direction of the brake disc, particularly in the case of the electromechanical brake mentioned above, significantly limits the vehicle's turning circle to avoid a collision with chassis components when turning the wheel.
[0006] The present invention is based on the object of providing an improved arrangement with a wheel and a caliper brake.
[0007] The solution to the problem is provided by an arrangement with a wheel of a vehicle and a caliper brake having the features of claim 1, a floating caliper brake for forming such an arrangement according to the independent claim 7, and a vehicle comprising such an arrangement according to the independent claim 10. Advantageous embodiments and further developments are the subject of the subclaims.
[0008] An arrangement of a wheel of a vehicle and a caliper brake is proposed.
[0009] The wheel comprises a rim, a hub section, and a spoke connecting the hub section to the rim.
[0010] The caliper brake comprises a brake disc with a curved brake disc chamber, a brake caliper with a caliper-like housing surrounding the brake disc, and at least one brake piston device arranged in the housing of the brake caliper, which is designed to transmit a contact force to a side surface of the brake disc by means of at least one brake piston.
[0011] A "brake piston device" within the meaning of the invention is understood to mean a device that has one or more brake pistons configured to exert a force directly or indirectly (in particular via one or more associated brake pads) on a brake disc. The brake piston device can, in particular, be designed as a structural unit or assembly and thus be manageable as a whole and, in particular, replaceable.
[0012] To attach the brake to the wheel of the vehicle, the brake disc chamber is connected to the wheel hub of the wheel.
[0013] When the brake is installed in the vehicle, the at least one brake piston device is arranged in that side of the caliper-like housing of the brake caliper which faces the interior of the vehicle.
[0014] In other words, it is provided that the part of the caliper-like housing of the brake caliper that takes up the most installation space, when installed in the vehicle, faces the interior of the vehicle and is also arranged on that side of the brake disc that faces the interior of the vehicle.
[0015] It is further provided that the curvature of the brake disc chamber, when the vehicle is installed and viewed in the axial direction of the wheel, is also oriented towards the interior of the vehicle.
[0016] Thus, both the brake disc chamber or its curvature, as well as the part of the saddle-like housing of the brake caliper that takes up the most space, face the interior of the vehicle when installed in the vehicle.
[0017] The caliper brake is, in particular, an electromechanically actuated caliper brake. The electromechanically actuated brake comprises an electromechanical actuator arranged on or in the brake caliper, which, when actuated, is configured to exert a force on the brake piston device, which is then transmitted by the brake piston device as a contact force to the side surface of the brake disc.
[0018] Particularly preferably, the electromechanical actuator is arranged on or in that side of the caliper-like housing of the brake caliper which faces the vehicle interior.
[0019] Thus, preferably, both the curvature of the brake disc chamber, the side of the caliper-like housing of the brake caliper comprising a brake piston device, and the electromechanical actuator of the electromechanically actuated brake are arranged on that side of the brake disc (when installed in the vehicle) which faces the vehicle interior.
[0020] An "electromechanical actuator (or equivalently "actuator")" within the meaning of the invention is understood to mean a drive device that converts an electrical signal into mechanical movements or changes in physical quantities, such as pressure in particular, and can thus actively intervene in a controlled process. In particular, electrically controlled actuators, such as spindle or worm drives, piezoelectric transducers, and pumps, are each electromechanical actuators within the meaning of the invention. The actuator can in particular be designed as a structural unit or assembly and thus be handled as a whole and, in particular, replaceable. The electrical signal can in particular also be generated in the actuator itself, for example by converting a received optically or wirelessly transmitted control signal into a corresponding electrical control signal.
[0021] It should be noted, however, that the invention is not limited to an electromechanically actuated brake and that it is also applicable to other braking concepts, such as a hydraulic brake.
[0022] The arrangement according to the invention makes it possible for the friction ring of the brake disc to be arranged closer to the spoke of the wheel, viewed in the axial direction of the wheel or brake disc, i.e., further towards the outside of the vehicle when installed in the vehicle. This allows for more efficient use of the installation space within the wheel, particularly in combination with an electromechanical brake. The caliper position can be selected significantly further towards the outside of the vehicle, which, for example, allows for a larger turning circle when steering the vehicle. A further significant advantage of this invention is the guarantee of a comparatively large solution space for designing the wheel contour with regard to the wheel's dishing, as well as the guarantee of the wheel's mechanical properties.
[0023] Furthermore, it is preferably provided that a friction ring of the brake disc is arranged closer to a spoke of the wheel, viewed in the axial direction of the wheel, than a flange forming the connecting surface between the wheel and the brake disc hub. The flange is in particular assigned to the wheel of the vehicle.
[0024] Such an arrangement allows for lower geometric and functional requirements for the flange. For example, the flange can be made longer in the axial direction of the wheel, allowing longer bolt connections to be used to attach the brake disc. This allows for simpler bolt design and improves the mechanical properties of the wheel connection, for example, with regard to technical design flexibility and the response to acoustic noise (e.g., cracking or creaking).
[0025] It is further preferred that the wheel offset be between -5 mm and +20 mm. The wheel offset is particularly preferably 0 mm.
[0026] The offset of a wheel describes the distance from the wheel center to the inner contact surface of the rim or the flange on the wheel hub.
[0027] This arrangement allows for a low offset, which in turn has the advantage of ensuring a high degree of freedom in wheel design with regard to the spoke's indentation toward the wheel center. Furthermore, such a low offset allows for a high degree of design flexibility in the mechanical properties of the wheel-hub connection in terms of strength, stiffness, and acoustics.
[0028] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the caliper brake is designed in the manner of a brake-by-wire braking system.
[0029] Particularly preferably, the brake caliper is a so-called floating caliper. The piston device is then arranged on the side of the caliper-like housing of the brake caliper (as viewed in the installed state of the vehicle) that faces the vehicle interior.
[0030] Furthermore, a floating caliper brake for forming an arrangement according to one of claims 1 to 6 is proposed.
[0031] The floating calliper brake comprises a brake disc with a curved brake disc chamber, a brake calliper with a calliper-like housing that surrounds the brake disc, the calliper-like housing surrounding the brake disc on a first side and a second side.
[0032] Furthermore, the floating calliper brake comprises at least one brake piston device arranged in the housing of the brake calliper, which is designed to transmit a contact force to a side surface of the brake disc by means of at least one brake piston.
[0033] The brake piston device is arranged in a first saddle side of the saddle-like housing, which is assigned to a first brake disc side.
[0034] It is intended that the brake disc chamber, viewed in the axial direction of the brake disc, is curved in the direction of the first caliper side.
[0035] Preferably, the brake is an electromechanically actuated brake, comprising an electromechanical actuator arranged on or in the floating caliper, which is configured, when actuated, to exert a force on the brake piston device, which force is further transmitted by the brake piston device as a contact force to a side surface of the brake disc.
[0036] Furthermore, the electromechanical actuator is preferably arranged on or in the first caliper side of the caliper-like housing of the brake caliper.
[0037] Furthermore, a vehicle comprising at least one arrangement configured according to one of claims 1 to 6 is proposed. The vehicle comprises at least two, preferably four wheels configured according to claim 1. The arrangement is particularly preferably arranged on a front axle of a two-axle vehicle.
[0038] These and other features are apparent from the claims and the description as well as from the drawing.
[0039] The invention is further explained below using an exemplary embodiment, wherein the attached single figure schematically shows a cross-section of an arrangement according to the invention. All of the features described in detail may be essential to the invention.
[0040] The figure shows a schematic sectional view of an exemplary arrangement. The arrangement comprises a wheel 1 of a vehicle, with a floating caliper brake 2 attached to this wheel. The figure shows the arrangement as it is mounted in a vehicle, with wheel 1 facing the vehicle exterior A and the floating caliper brake 2 facing the vehicle interior I. The vehicle and the attachment of the arrangement to it are not depicted.
[0041] The wheel 1 comprises a rim 1.1, a hub section 1.3, by which the wheel is connected to the floating caliper brake 1, and two spokes 1.2 connecting the hub section 1.3 to the rim 1.1. The floating caliper brake 2 comprises a brake disc 2.2 with a curved brake disc housing 2.3, a brake caliper 2.1 with a caliper-like housing surrounding the brake disc 2.2, at least one brake piston device (not visible) arranged in the housing of the brake caliper 2.1, which is designed to transmit a contact pressure to a side surface of the brake disc 2.2 by means of at least one brake piston (not visible).
[0042] When the brake 2 is installed in the vehicle, the brake piston device is arranged on that side of the caliper-like housing of the brake caliper 2.1 which faces the vehicle interior I. As can be seen in the figure, the part of the brake caliper 2.1 which occupies the largest installation space, viewed in the installed state of the vehicle, is arranged on the side of the brake disc 2.2 which faces the vehicle interior I.
[0043] The brake disc chamber 2.3 is connected to the wheel hub 1.3 via the flange 1.4 of the wheel 1.
[0044] The curvature of the brake disc chamber 2.3 is oriented towards the interior of the vehicle I when the vehicle is installed and viewed in the axial direction M of the wheel or brake disc 2.2.
[0045] Thus, both the part of the brake calliper 2.1 that takes up the largest installation space and the curvature of the brake disc chamber 2.3 are arranged on the side of the brake disc 2.2 that faces the vehicle interior I.
[0046] It is further provided that the recess 2.2.1 of the brake disc 2.2 is connected to the outer friction ring (i.e. the one facing the outer side A of the vehicle) of the brake disc 2.2 in order not to impair the cooling performance of the disc.
[0047] Such an arrangement allows the friction ring of the brake disc 2.2 to be arranged closer to the spoke 1.2 of the wheel 1, i.e., further toward the vehicle exterior A, when viewed in the axial direction M of the wheel 1 or the brake disc 2.2. This allows more installation space to be created in the wheel housing or interior of the wheel 1, which, for example, allows for the accommodation of additional components, such as parts of an electromechanical braking system or the like, without compromising steering.
[0048] The dishing of wheel 1 and the offset can also be freely designed geometrically using such an arrangement. QUOTES CONTAINED IN THE DESCRIPTION
