Description
Description:
[0001] The invention relates to a crimp connector for connecting a cable having a cable shield to an electronic assembly, which is in particular a printed circuit board.
[0002] In the current state of the art, it is usually intended that the cable shield of a cable is soldered directly to the electronic assembly or to solder pads provided for this purpose when connecting the cable or its conductors to an electronic assembly.
[0003] The problem here, however, is that soldering the cable shielding separately, with all the associated preparatory work, is very time-consuming and usually has to be done directly on the electronic assembly. Especially when manufacturing a large number of electronic assemblies or connecting numerous cables with cable shields to the electronic assembly(s), soldering the cable shields individually does not guarantee a high level of process reliability, as errors can and will occur due to the high proportion of manual and intricate work involved.
[0004] Crimp connectors which can be connected to an electronic assembly via screw connections are known, for example, from the documents EP 0 428 424 A2, JP S50 116093 U, US 6 087 584 A and US 4 755 152 A.
[0005] The invention is therefore based on the objective of overcoming the aforementioned disadvantages and providing a crimp connector for connecting a cable having a cable shield to an electronic assembly or to a printed circuit board, by which the cable and in particular the cable shield can be connected to the electronic assembly or to contacts provided for this purpose in a simple, process-reliable and quick manner.
[0006] This problem is solved by the combination of features according to claim 1.
[0007] According to the invention, a crimp connector for connecting a cable with a cable shield to an electronic assembly with the features of the main claim is proposed. The crimp connector can also be referred to as a crimp terminal or cable shield crimp terminal. The electronic assembly is preferably a printed circuit board, wherein the electronic assembly or printed circuit board can provide a shield terminal for connecting the cable shield, so that the crimp connector is preferably suitable for connecting the cable shield to this terminal or for conductively connecting it. According to the invention, the crimp connector also has a hollow cylindrical inner sleeve with a longitudinally extending interior forming a cable entry and a hollow cylindrical outer sleeve circumferentially surrounding the inner sleeve. The longitudinal direction preferably refers to a longitudinal direction or longitudinal axis of the inner or outer sleeve. The outer sleeves are essentially coaxial when assembled. Similarly, the circumferential direction refers to a circumferential direction around the longitudinal axis of the inner and outer sleeves, respectively. During assembly of the crimp connector or the cable set described later, the inner sleeve can be positioned inside the outer sleeve, or vice versa. To allow a cable to pass through the interior space forming the cable entry point, this space extends along the entire longitudinal axis of the inner sleeve, such that the interior space has an opening at each of its longitudinally opposite ends and is circumferentially surrounded or bounded by the inner sleeve. Furthermore, a radial clearance is provided between the inner and outer sleeves, which is preferably also cylindrical, defined by the inner and outer sleeves. The clearance is therefore determined in particular by the outer diameter of the inner sleeve and the inner diameter of the outer sleeve. Furthermore, the clearance is designed to accommodate the cable shield when the cable passes through the interior of the inner sleeve, so that the cable shield can be arranged within the clearance. Preferably, the cable shield can be arranged within the clearance, essentially completely surrounding the inner sleeve in the circumferential direction. The outer sleeve and the inner sleeve are designed to be fixed together by plastic deformation, at least of the outer sleeve, in particular by crimping or, more generally, by squeezing. Only the outer sleeve or both the outer and inner sleeves can be deformed. The plastic deformation clamps a cable shield, which is held in the free space between the outer and inner sleeves, pressing it flat against the inner sleeve and fixing it to the inner sleeve or between the outer and inner sleeves. To connect the crimp connector, particularly with a cable shield attached to it, to the electronic assembly, the inner sleeve and / or the outer sleeve is further provided with a connection section on a longitudinally end insertion side, with which the crimp connector, or preferably the inner sleeve, can be fixed to the electronic assembly.
[0008] The proposed basic design offers several advantages over the prior art. First, a cable can be pre-assembled with a crimp connector, allowing a cable and crimp connector unit, also known as a cable set, to be prepared at the factory or before connection to the electronic assembly. Furthermore, the cable shield does not need to be cut section by section and crimped or rolled for soldering, thus eliminating the need for complex mechanical adjustments to the shield. The cable shield is also not connected to the electronic assembly on only one side and therefore asymmetrically, but rather is uniformly connected to the crimp connector by its continuous, flat contact with the inner sleeve. The crimp connector, in turn, can be connected to the electronic assembly over a large area.
[0009] Provided that cable strain relief via the cable shielding and the electronic assembly is permissible, a cable strain relief that distributes the force symmetrically can be achieved at the same time.
[0010] If the opposite section of the electronic assembly corresponds to a hole through the assembly or circuit board into which the crimp connector can be inserted, this simultaneously creates a cable passage through the assembly or circuit board, so that the wires of the cable can be connected on one side of the assembly or circuit board and the cable extends through the crimp connector to an opposite side of the assembly or circuit board.
[0011] Although the inner sleeve and the outer sleeve are each hollow cylindrical, they may in principle also have openings or slots, as long as a proper connection of the cable shield and a proper plastic deformation for connecting the cable shield remain possible.
[0012] It is further assumed that the connection section is formed on the inner sleeve. However, as provided for in the main claim, the connection section can be provided on the inner sleeve and / or the outer sleeve, as long as the crimp connector can be fixed to the electronic assembly via the connection section to establish an electrical connection between the cable shield and the shielding terminal of the assembly.
[0013] To facilitate the electrical connection of the cable shield to a shielding terminal of the electronic assembly, another possible embodiment of the crimp connector provides that the inner sleeve is electrically conductive and can be fixed in contact with a shielding terminal of the electronic assembly via the connection section, so that the cable shield fixed between the outer sleeve and the inner sleeve can be electrically connected to the shielding terminal.
[0014] For connecting the crimp connector to the electronic assembly, it is preferably provided that the inner sleeve protrudes beyond the outer sleeve on the insertion side with the connection section, so that the inner sleeve is free radially outwards on the insertion side and can be inserted or plugged into the electronic assembly with the insertion side or the exposed section of the inner sleeve on the insertion side.
[0015] To simplify the process of pulling the cable shield onto the inner sleeve, an advantageous embodiment of the crimp connector further provides that the inner sleeve has an expanding aid on an insertion side opposite the insertion side in the longitudinal direction, where the cable can be inserted into the interior of the inner sleeve forming the cable entry point. This expanding aid is formed by a chamfer that surrounds an outer edge of the inner sleeve on the insertion side and can therefore also be referred to as an outer chamfer.
[0016] In the following, both the inner and outer sleeves are referred to as having an insertion side and an insertion side, which are opposite each other along the essentially coaxial longitudinal axis. The insertion side corresponds to an arrangement facing the insertion side, and the insertion side to an arrangement facing the insertion side.
[0017] In order to further facilitate the insertion of the cable's conductors, surrounded by the cable shield, into and through the cable entry formed by the inner sleeve, the inner sleeve can also have a chamfer on the insertion side as an insertion aid, which surrounds an inner edge of the inner sleeve and can accordingly be referred to as the inner chamfer of the inner sleeve.
[0018] According to the assembly procedure described in detail later, it may be provided that the outer sleeve is first slid over the cable shielding during assembly. To simplify sliding or pulling the outer sleeve over the cable shielding, the outer sleeve may have a chamfer running around its inner edge on the insertion side.
[0019] Since, according to an advantageous procedure for assembling the crimp connector, the outer sleeve is pulled or pushed over the inner sleeve and, in particular, also over the cable shielding already arranged over the inner sleeve, an advantageous further development provides that the outer sleeve has a pulling aid at an insertion-side end section to facilitate pulling the outer sleeve over the inner sleeve and, in particular, also over the cable shield, which is spread onto the inner sleeve and preferably rests circumferentially against the inner sleeve. This pulling aid is formed by a chamfer that surrounds an insertion-side inner edge of the outer sleeve. The chamfer is thus an insertion-side inner chamfer of the outer sleeve.
[0020] For particularly easy connection of the crimp connector to the electronic assembly, the connection section is a snap-fit section with which the crimp connector can be snapped into a counterpart section or counter-snap section provided on the electronic assembly.
[0021] It can be particularly advantageous to provide that the locking section is formed by a locking lug that runs circumferentially and points radially outwards.
[0022] Furthermore, the inner sleeve can have at least one slot at the connection section, or be slotted, so that the connection section, and in particular the locking section or the locking lug of the locking section, are resilient and can be deflected resiliently during a locking operation. Particularly advantageous for this purpose are at least two opposing slots extending to the insertion-side end or to an insertion-side end face of the inner sleeve.
[0023] When the crimp connector is inserted into the electronic assembly, a certain amount of play between the crimp connector and the assembly can lead to an undefined electrical connection between the cable shield and the electronic assembly or its shielding connection.
[0024] To further improve the electrical connection between the cable shielding and a shielding connection of the electronic assembly, it is also provided that the connection section forms a solder connection and is designed to be solderable to the electronic assembly or the shielding connection provided for this purpose.
[0025] Furthermore, the inner sleeve can also have a soldering section where the inner sleeve is heated and solder can be introduced into the free space with the cable shield arranged therein, so that in addition to plastic deformation, soldering of the cable shield is possible.
[0026] Alternatively or additionally to soldering the crimp connector to the electronic assembly, a spring element can also be provided on the connection section to improve the electrical connection. This spring element exerts a spring force on the electronic assembly, clamping the crimp connector against it. Thus, when the crimp connector is inserted into the electronic assembly, it locks into place. Preferably, any longitudinal play of the inner sleeve relative to the assembly, which would otherwise allow movement of the crimp connector, is compensated for by the spring force exerted by the spring element.
[0027] To define the position of the outer sleeve relative to the inner sleeve and the inner sleeve relative to the electronic assembly, the inner sleeve, according to a further advantageous embodiment, has a projection on the insertion side that extends longitudinally beyond the outer sleeve and points radially outwards. The projection is preferably circumferential and forms a transition or boundary between the insertion-side section of the inner sleeve, which is surrounded by the outer sleeve in the assembled state and can also be referred to as the crimp section, and the insertion-side connection section of the inner sleeve. The outer sleeve can be brought into contact with the projection or an insertion-side surface of the projection with an insertion-side end section. Furthermore, the crimp connector can be brought into contact with the electronic assembly with the projection or an insertion-side surface of the crimp connector.A spring element can also be provided between the projection or its insertion-side surface and the electronic assembly; this element can be designed, for example, as a spring ring, which can be supported on one side on the projection or its insertion-side surface and on the other side against the electronic assembly.
[0028] Furthermore, the projection can also serve as a stop for the cable shield, so that the cable shield rests against the inner sleeve at a predetermined length or can be brought into position.
[0029] A further aspect of the invention relates to a set comprising an electronic assembly, preferably a printed circuit board, and a crimp connector according to the invention. The electronic assembly has a corresponding counterpart to the connection section. The counterpart is preferably designed as a round hole into which, or through which, the connection section of the crimp connector can be inserted, thus simultaneously providing a cable entry point through the electronic assembly. Furthermore, a shielding connection is preferably provided on the electronic assembly, which is particularly advantageously designed as a solder pad or an electrically conductive contact surface that surrounds the round hole-shaped counterpart in a ring-like manner and can also extend into the hole.
[0030] Furthermore, one aspect of the invention relates to a set consisting of a cable and a crimp connector according to the invention, which can also be referred to as a cable set. The cable has a sheath, a cable shield, and a cable core, wherein the cable core is understood to be the area of the cable surrounded by the cable shield and is formed, in particular, by at least one conductor. The cable shield is further arranged section by section between the inner sleeve and the outer sleeve, which are plastically deformed, i.e., crimped, and thereby fixed to one another, so that the crimp connector is firmly connected to the cable shield and / or the cable.
[0031] In particular, the cable set can be pre-assembled, meaning that the cable with the attached crimp connector is ready for subsequent assembly on an electronic component. The cable set can also include a protective sleeve, such as heat-shrink tubing, which extends from the cable jacket to the crimp connector and preferably covers the outer sleeve of the crimp connector, thus ensuring that the crimp connector and the cable shield are protected against accidental contact.
[0032] Furthermore, one aspect of the invention relates to a method for assembling a cable set consisting of a cable and a crimp connector according to the invention, or of the cable set described above. The cable has a sheath, a cable shield, and a cable core with at least one conductor. The sheath encloses the cable shield and the cable core circumferentially. The proposed method comprises at least the following steps: a) Stripping the cable at a longitudinal end section by removing the sheath over a predetermined length; b) Inserting the cable core into an insertion-side end of the interior of the inner sleeve, whereby the cable shield is spread open and slides over an outer surface of the inner sleeve until the at least one conductor at the insertion side of the inner sleeve emerges from the interior and preferably protrudes from the insertion-side end of the inner sleeve by a predetermined length, wherein the cable shield can also be pre-spread or opened open at least at the end beforehand; c) Pulling the outer sleeve over the inner sleeve and the cable shield arranged around the inner sleeve; d) Crimping or crushing or plastically deforming at least the outer sleeve with the cable shield and the inner sleeve, so that the outer sleeve with the cable shield is fixed to the inner sleeve.
[0033] The removal of the outer sheath, or the length over which the sheath is removed, can be specified as required. Furthermore, the shield can be shortened at the end, so that, starting from the end of the cable where it is inserted into the crimp connector, there is a first section of the cable consisting only of the cable core, an adjacent second section consisting of the cable core and the surrounding cable shield, and an adjacent third section consisting of the cable core, the surrounding cable shield, and the surrounding cable sheath.
[0034] Preferably, the cable is stripped or sheathed to such an extent and inserted or pushed through the inner sleeve that the conductors of the cable core protrude from the inner sleeve to a predetermined length on the insertion side, so that the conductors can be connected to the electronic assembly in the intended manner during assembly of the cable set.
[0035] Furthermore, one aspect of the invention relates to a method for mounting the cable set to the electronic assembly or the printed circuit board. According to this method, the crimp connector with its connection section is inserted into the electronic assembly and thereby fixed to it. To ensure a permanent electrical connection between the cable shielding and the shielding terminal of the electronic assembly via the crimp connector, it is further provided that the crimp connector is soldered to the shielding section in the area of the connection section, or that a spring element is provided on the connection section of the crimp connector. Subsequently, the conductors of the cable protruding from the insertion side of the crimp connector can be connected to the electronic assembly, and in particular by soldering.
[0036] The features disclosed above can be combined in any way, provided that this is technically possible and they do not contradict each other.
[0037] Other advantageous embodiments of the invention are characterized in the dependent claims or are described in more detail below together with the description of the preferred embodiment of the invention with reference to the figures. The figures show: Fig. 1 a side view of a crimp connector; Fig. 2 a sectional view through the crimp connector according to Fig. 1 ; Fig. 3 a perspective view of an inner sleeve; Fig. 4 a perspective view of a crimp connector; Fig. 5 assembly steps in the assembly of a cable set.
[0038] The figures are schematic examples. Identical reference symbols in the figures indicate identical functional and / or structural features.
[0039] In Figure 1Figure 1 shows a crimp connector 1, which essentially consists of the inner sleeve 11 and the outer sleeve 12 that radially encloses it. On a first side, which can be referred to as the insertion side S1, since the crimp connector 1 can be inserted into an electronic assembly 3 with this side, the inner sleeve 11 forms a connection section 112, which serves to fix the crimp connector 1 to the electronic assembly 3. Along the longitudinal axis L, opposite the first side, lies a second side of the crimp connector 1, which can be referred to as the insertion side S2, since a cable 2, or rather its core 23, can be inserted into or guided through the inner sleeve 11 on this side.
[0040] Figure 2 This represents a sectional view of the crimp connector 1, which is shown along the section path AA, as shown in Figure 1The diagram is shown in longitudinal section. It is particularly evident that both the inner sleeve 11 and the outer sleeve 12 are hollow cylindrical and each has an interior space 111, 121, which extends longitudinally L or along the longitudinal axis L through the respective sleeve 11, 12. The inner diameter of the outer sleeve 12 and its interior space 121 is shown in the figure. Fig. 5 b) ) with reference to the outer diameter of the inner sleeve 11 such that a free space 13 is formed between the inner sleeve 11 and the outer sleeve 12, in which a cable shield 22 of the cable 2 can be arranged during assembly.
[0041] In the perspective view according to Figure 3 An inner sleeve 11 is shown, which in this case is essentially the inner sleeve 11 according to the Figures 1 and 2This corresponds to the perspective view. It is particularly evident that the spreading aid 113, designed as an outer chamfer, which facilitates the insertion of the cable shield 22 onto the inner sleeve 11, completely encircles the insertion-side outer edge of the inner sleeve 11 in the circumferential direction around the longitudinal axis L. Furthermore, the insertion-side inner chamfer, running along the inner edge of the inner sleeve 11, provides an insertion aid 116, which facilitates the insertion of the core 23 of the cable 2 or the conductors 24 that form the core 23.
[0042] Furthermore, in Figure 3The connection section 112, in particular, is clearly visible and is designed as a locking section. For this purpose, a locking lug 114 extending radially outwards is provided on the insertion side, which is formed circumferentially around the inner sleeve 11 with respect to the longitudinal axis L. The locking lug 114 is formed by a projection that increases in a ramp-like manner in the radial direction from the insertion side S1 to the insertion side S2. In order to allow the locking lug 114 to spring inwards and subsequently spring back outwards, thereby engaging the locking lug 114 or the locking section into the electronic assembly 3, two [missing information - likely referring to the connection section 112] are provided in the longitudinal direction.Slots 117 running along the longitudinal axis L and opposite each other are provided, which extend from the insertion-side end face of the inner sleeve to over the projection 115, so that the locking lug 114 can spring back radially inwards when the connecting section 112 is inserted into the electronic assembly 3 and then spring back out again to lock into the assembly 3.
[0043] To enable the outer sleeve 12 to be positioned at a defined location on the inner sleeve 11, and the crimp connector 1 to be positioned at a defined location on the electronic assembly 3, the inner sleeve 11 further provides a projection 115, which forms a transition between the connection section 112 and a section surrounded by the outer sleeve 12, which can also be referred to as the crimp section. When the outer sleeve 12 is slid onto the inner sleeve 11 from the insertion side S2, it can be brought into contact with the insertion-side surface of the projection 115, thus defining the position of the outer sleeve 12 along the longitudinal axis L relative to the inner sleeve 11.When the crimp connector 1 is inserted, it can rest with the insertion-side surface of the projection 115 against the electronic assembly 3, so that the positioning of the crimp connector 1 relative to the assembly 3 is also determined, wherein an intermediate part and in particular also a spring element 14 can be arranged between the projection 115 and the assembly 3, as shown in . Figure 5 is shown.
[0044] Figure 4 shows again the entire crimp connector 1 with an inner sleeve 11 according to Figure 3 , which is therefore essentially analogous to crimp connector 1 according to the Figures 1 and 2The outer sleeve 12 is plastically deformed at the crimp points 4, and the inner sleeve 11 may also be deformed in the area of the crimp points 4 due to the plastic deformation of the outer sleeve 12. This plastic deformation fixes the outer sleeve 12 and a cable shield 13 arranged in the space 13 during assembly to the inner sleeve 11, so that the crimp connector 1 forms a unit, and the crimp connector 1 also forms a unit with a cable 2 arranged on it during assembly.
[0045] Such assembly of a cable set consisting of cable 2 and crimp connector 1, as well as subsequent assembly of the cable set on the electronic assembly 3, is simplified by the Figure 5 illustrated. Since the crimp connector 1 in Figure 5 to create a crimp connector 1 according to the Figures 1 to 4 For the sake of clarity, not all reference symbols are shown.
[0046] Figure 5 is divided into steps or sections a) to f).
[0047] Section a) shows a crimp connector 1 as it is used in Figures 1 and 2 The diagram shows a side view. During assembly, if necessary, the outer sleeve 12 is first removed from the inner sleeve 11 so that they are separated, as shown in section b), where sections b) to f) show the crimp connector 1 in longitudinal section.
[0048] Next, a cable 2 is stripped at one end section, i.e., the sheath 2 of the cable 2 is removed in this section. Then, the cable shield 22 is cut or shortened to a predetermined length, so that the cable core 23 with the conductors 24 is exposed.
[0049] The outer sleeve 12 is slid over the cable 2. Subsequently, as shown in section c), the core 23 of the cable is inserted into the interior 111 of the inner sleeve 11 and through the inner sleeve 11.
[0050] The cable shield 22 then comes into contact with the spreading aid 113 and can be spread open by it, so that the cable shield 22 slides over the inner sleeve 11, as shown in section d). Subsequently or simultaneously, the outer sleeve 12 is slid over the inner sleeve 11 with the cable shield 22 arranged on or around it, until the insertion end of the outer sleeve 12 rests against the projection 115 of the inner sleeve 11, as shown in section d). Figure 5 as shown. It may also be stipulated that the cable shield 22 must also be in contact with the projection 115 at its end.
[0051] If the outer sleeve 12 is in the position determined according to section d), the crimp connector 1 or the outer sleeve 12 is plastically deformed, so that the outer sleeve 12 is pressed radially inwards, particularly at the crimp points 4, and squeezes the cable shield 22 between the outer sleeve 12 and the inner sleeve 11, as shown in section e), so that the cable shield 22 lies flat and all around against the inner sleeve 11 and is in electrical contact with it.
[0052] The crimp connector 1 now forms a single unit with the cable 2, which can only be separated destructively.
[0053] The cable unit or cable set formed thereby and shown in section e) can then be connected to an electronic assembly 3, which in this case is a printed circuit board 3.
[0054] The circuit board 3 forms a counterpart section 31 corresponding to the connection section 112 of the crimp connector 1, which in this case is a round hole surrounded by an annular contact surface serving as a shielding connection 32. The contact surface can also extend into the hole forming the counterpart section 31.
[0055] The crimp connector 1 is inserted with its plug-in-side connection section 112 into the mating section 31 of the circuit board 3, so that the locking lug 114 locks into the mating section formed by the mating section 31.
[0056] To ensure good electrical contact between the inner sleeve 11 and the shielding terminal 32, a spring element 14, which may be a spring washer, can be slid onto the connecting section 112 of the inner sleeve 11 before the crimp connector 1 is inserted into the circuit board 3. As shown in section f), this spring element creates or exerts a spring force between the projection 115 and the circuit board 3, so that the locking lug 114 rests flat on the contact surface forming the shielding terminal 32. Subsequently, and alternatively or additionally to the use of a spring element 14, the crimp connector 1 can be soldered to the contact surface of the shielding terminal 32, forming a solder joint 33 and further improving the electrical contact between the cable shield 22 and the shielding terminal 32 via the inner sleeve 11.
[0057] During assembly, a transition area 5 is formed between the cable sheath 21 and the crimp connector 1. If protection against contact or bending is required, a cover, for example made of heat shrink tubing, can be attached during or after assembly of the cable set, extending from the sheath 21 to the crimp connector 1 and, in particular, covering the transition 5 in a touch-proof manner.
