AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Wind turbine rotor blades face structural integrity challenges at bonded joints, particularly in jointed configurations, without adding unnecessary weight or compromising structural integrity in other parts of the blade.

Method used

A modified spar cap configuration for jointed wind turbine blades, featuring opposite spar caps with a center section of high rigidity and wing members of lower rigidity, flared to accommodate a receiver box, ensuring structural integrity while minimizing weight.

Benefits of technology

Enhances structural integrity at bonded joints by distributing load support effectively, accommodating flexure, and maintaining overall blade strength without excessive weight.

Abstract

A wind turbine rotor blade comprises a first segment and a second segment extending in opposite directions from a longitudinal join line and connected along that line by an internal joining structure. The opposing spars of the first segment include a longitudinal center section with a constant cross-width up to the longitudinal join line. The wing elements are positioned against opposite longitudinal sides of the center section; each wing element has a head section with a constant cross-width and a flared tail section with a decreasing cross-width, the head section aligning with one end of the center section along the longitudinal join line. The central section is made of a first material with a first stiffness, and the wing elements are made, at least partially, of a second material with a second, lower stiffness, so that the total stiffness of the wing elements is less than the first stiffness of the central section.
