Description

METHOD FOR HEARING PROTECTION WITH HEADPHONETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present inventive subject matter relates generally to headphone. More particularly, the present inventive subject matter relates to a method for hearing protection by measuring real-time ambient noise level and user’s perceived noise level with a headphone.BACKGROUND

[0002] Noise cancellation (NC) has become a widely used mainstream audio function in headphones. Usually, a complete NC system consists of a passive part and an active part. Passive noise cancellation (PNC) is a physical noise isolation determined by mechanical structures and materials of the headphones, while active noise cancellation (ANC) can be a software-hardware combined solution.

[0003] Usually, an ANC headphone may include feedforward (FF) microphones and feedback (FB) microphones. These microphones work in conjunction with headphone speakers to generate noise cancelling sound waves to counteract the noises inside earcups of the headphone. However, although users can feel that wearing these ANC headphones may somewhat reduce the ambient noises, they cannot determine the noise level actually reduced and the sound level perceived by users’ ears.

[0004] Therefore, it is necessary to provide a solution that presents the ANC data, including the ambient noise level and the perceived near-ear sound level, as well as the sound level difference therebetween, to the users, whereby further to provide suggestions or advices on hearing protection for them.

[0005] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIVE SUBJECT MATTER

[0006] In order to overcome the shortcomings and deficiencies in the prior art, the purpose of  the inventive subject matter is to provide a method for hearing protection by using a headphone to monitor ANC data including the ambient noise level, the near-ear sound level and the sound level difference therebetween.

[0007] In one aspect, the method comprises following steps, which may be performed in one or more processor of an ANC headphone, for generating the ANC data in it. In particular, by picking up ambient noise signals via at least one FF microphone of the headphone and picking up near-ear sound signals via at least one FB microphone of the headphone, an ambient noise level can be calculated from the ambient noise signals, and a near-ear sound level can be derived from the near-ear sound signals. Based on the above two volume levels, a sound level difference therebetween can be obtained by subtracting the near-ear sound level from the ambient noise level. The sound level difference may measure a sound power that the headphone can truly isolate. The method further comprises the step of transmitting the ANC data, namely, the ambient noise level, the near-ear sound level and the sound level difference, to a user’s host device to present to the user and to perform data analysis, and thereby to provide and present hearing health suggestions to the user through, for example, App displays on the user’s host device.

[0008] In another aspect, the method comprises steps, which may be performed in the user’s host device, for receiving the ANC data from the headphone, presenting the ANC to the user, and performing the data analysis to provide and present the hearing health suggestions to the user through the App displays thereon.

[0009] Therefore, by implementing this method, a headphone with FF microphones and FB microphones can be used as a sound level meter, to monitor the ambient noise level and the near-ear sound level, and to calculate the sound level difference between the ambient noise level and the near-ear sound level, for measuring in-ear / ear entry point sound pressure level for hearing protection assessment, thus providing hearing protection recommendations to users through host devices.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0010] The present inventive subject matter may be better understood from reading the following description of non-limiting embodiments, with reference to the attached drawings. In the figures,  like reference numeral designates corresponding parts, wherein below:

[0012] FIG. 2 illustrates an exemplary flowchart 200, in the headphone, of the method for hearing protection with a headphone, according to one or more embodiments of the present inventive subject matter; and

[0013] FIG. 3 illustrates an exemplary flowchart 300, in the user’s host device, of the method for hearing protection with a headphone, according to one or more embodiments of the present inventive subject matter.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0014] The detailed description of the one or more embodiments of the present inventive subject matter is disclosed hereinafter; however, it is understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely exemplary of the inventive subject matter that may be embodied in various and alternative forms. The figures are not necessarily to scale; some features may be exaggerated or minimized to show details of particular components. Therefore, specific structural and function details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but merely as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the present inventive subject matter.

[0015] FIG. 1 illustrates an exemplary block diagram 100 of the method for hearing protection using a headphone, according to one or more embodiments of the present inventive subject matter. Most ANC headphones are equipped with at least one FF microphone and at least one FB microphone. For each earcup of a headphone, these microphones may be used to detect the ambient noise level outside the headphone and the near-ear sound level at the user’s ear entry point, respectively. By pre-calibrating on these microphones, the headphone may act as a sound level meter for measuring sound levels inside and / or outside of the headphone.

[0016] In one or more embodiments of the present inventive subject matter, referring to FIG. 1, the headphone 110 comprises at least one FF microphone 112 and at least one FB microphone 114, both for each of its two earcups arranging for the user’s left / right ear, respectively. For example, for each earcup of the headphone 110, the FF microphone 112 usually is placed at outer  chassis, so as to pick up ambient sounds outside of the headphone 110. When the user listens to audio signals from the headphone 110, such outside sounds all belong to the ambient noise signals. And, for the earcup of the headphone 110, the FB microphone 114 usually can be placed inside thereof, such as next to the speaker at the ear entry point or inside of the ear canal of the user, to pick up near-ear sound signals that can be received by the ear, correspondingly.

[0017] One or more processor 116 equipped in the headphone 110 can be configured to calculate an ambient noise level from the ambient sounds picked up by the FF microphone 112, and the one or more processor 116 can be further configured to derive a near-ear sound level from the near-ear sound signals picked up by the FB microphone 114 inside the ear. Then a sound level difference between the ambient noise level and the near-ear sound level can be obtained by subtracting the near-ear sound level from the ambient noise level, accordingly. The obtained sound level difference characterizes a sound power that the headphone can truly isolate, that is, an actual noise reduced by the headphone.

[0018] The headphone 110 can be connected to a user’s host device 120 via a wireless connection 130, such as WIFI, BLE,  or the like. Alternatively, the connection can also be wired. The processed data, including the ambient noise level, the near-ear sound level and the sound level difference, etc., can be transmitted from the headphone to the host device 120 through the wireless connection 130. The host device 120 herein may include, but not limited to, a handset, a pad, a PDA or the like, with a suitable application (App) installed thereon, through which those ANC data can be presented to the user, and data analysis to those ANC data can be performed and the results can be presented to the user, either, via APP displays 122.

[0019] In the system as shown in FIG. 1, the host device 120 and the headphone 110 connected thereto can be considered as a conventional configuration for headphone usages. There is not any extra electronic component added for the method as provided herein for hearing protection with the headphone 110 as well as the host device 120. Both the real-time ambient noise measurement and the sound level recording can be achieved through the headphone device in such conventional configuration, which can also be possible to further calculate how much noise has been reduced by the headphone 110 and thus to evaluate the NC performance, while further tracking the user’s perceived sound level and then providing hearing health suggestions, accordingly.

[0020] FIG. 2 illustrates an exemplary flowchart 200, in the headphone, of the method for  hearing protection with a headphone, according to one or more embodiments of the present inventive subject matter. As noted, by using an ANC headphone, arranged with the FF and FB microphones, as a sound level meter, the ambient noise level outside the headphone and the near-ear sound level in each earcup of the headphone can be detected. Based on those measurement results, more information can be presented to the user of the headphone, including but not limited to: the ambient noise level, the volume of an audio can be heard and the noise level can be perceived by the user, and the actual noise reduced by the headphone, as well as other data related to hearing health and data analysis results that can help protecting the hearing. This information can be presented to users in conjunction with real-time hearing protection suggestions in variety forms via the App displays shown on the user’s host device.

[0021] In one or more embodiments of the present inventive subject matter, in step S202, when the user is wearing a headphone and the headphone is continuously working, the FF microphones arranged below the headphone chassis can continuously pick up the ambient sounds outside the earcups of the headphone. In one or more embodiments, the FF microphone may also be set outside the user’s ear canal to pick up the ambient sound when the earcups of the headphone are in-ear earbuds.

[0022] In an example, when the user is in a specific environment, such as while riding a subway with wearing the headphone, the ambient noises may include various sounds such as track noise, wind noise, roaring sound, broadcast notifications, and / or chatting from other passengers in the subway carriage. For the user who is listening to the audio played in the headphone, these sounds may all belong to the ambient noises. The FF microphones of the worn headphone pick up these ambient noise signals, and thereby the one or more processors of the headphone may, in step S204, calculate the ambient noise level in real time, accordingly.

[0023] In one or more embodiments of the present inventive subject matter, in synchronous or asynchronous with the FF microphones picking up the ambient noise signals, the FB microphones can continuously pick up the near-ear sound signals inside the earcups of the headphone, in step S206, when the user is wearing the headphone. Additionally or alternatively, for the earcups of the headphone being two in-ear earbuds, the FB microphones can be set thereon and inside of the user’s ear canal, to pick up the near-ear sound signals therein. Thus, it can be understood that the FB microphones can pick up the audio signal propagation played by the headphone at the ear enter point (or inside the ear canal) of the user, as well as the noise  signals that the headphone cannot eliminate by such as the ANC function. Those sound signals picked up by the FB microphones inside the user’s ear canal can be considered as the sounds that can be heard by the user.

[0024] In the noted instance, when the user riding the subway with the headphone on and listening to a music playing therein, the user may still hear more or less noise, besides the music playback in the headphone in this case. Such noise may come from the external environment outside the headphone or other sources, and / or it may come from the impact on the NC performance of the headphone due to not wearing the headphone properly, or it may come from the ANC setting being not high enough.

[0025] Additionally or alternative, if the user is wearing the headphone without playing any audio, he / she can still hear some noise, which may not be as loud as the actual ambient noise due to the PNC or ANC effects of the headphone. In this case, the headphone can be used purely as a sound level meter to detect the noise level in the earcups through the FB microphones.

[0026] Therefore, when the ANC headphone has been activated, the FB microphones of the headphone can pick up sounds, including the audio played in the headphone and the noise that the user can perceive after noise reduction through both the PNC and ANC. For the noted instance in the subway carriage, the subway noises, broadcast notification sounds, or voices from other passengers picked up by the FB microphones inside the headphone still can be heard by the user with the headphone on, which may have a lower volume than the actual ambient noises picked up by the FF microphones arranged outside the headphone. And then, in step S208, the one or more processors may derive the near-ear sound level in real time from these near-ear sound signals picked up by the FB microphones, accordingly, which can be heard by the user.

[0027] Next, in step S210, the sound level difference of the ambient noise level and the near-ear sound level can be obtained, in the one or more processor, therefrom, as: Xdifference=Aambient_noise-Bnear_ear          (1)

[0028] where: Aambient_noise represents the ambient noise level;

[0029] Bnear_ear represents the near-ear sound level heard by the user; and

[0030] Xdifference represents the sound level difference between the ambient noise level and the near-ear sound level.

[0031] In the following step S212, the above ANC data, referred to the ambient noise level (A) , the near-ear sound level (B) , and the sound level difference (X) therebetween, can be transmitted from the headphone to the user’s host device, where the data analysis can be performed with the ANC data, and the analysis results along with the quantitative ANC data can be presented to the user through the App displays. The App should be applicable for performing such functions, as implementing the headphone as a sound level meter, a sound-pressure level meter, or a noise-alarm device, to monitor and record the ambient noise levels and / or the near-ear sound levels. The App should be further suitable for providing the information derived from the data analysis and presenting it to the users.

[0032] FIG. 3 illustrates an exemplary flowchart 300, in the user’s host device, of the method for hearing protection with a headphone, according to one or more embodiments of the present inventive subject matter. As shown in FIG. 3, firstly in step S310, the App can be download and installed on the user’s host device, which is suitable for performing the method for hearing protection provided herein by measuring the real-time ambient noise levels and the user perceived sound levels using with headphones. Under the default settings of the installed App, the functions of allowing the App to run in the backstage, allowing historical data of the received ANC data to be recorded and stored in the backstage and allowing the OS to notify time and location information in the backstage can all be enabled. For example, the App may further allow for the system pop-up windows, etc. For example, the App may also set a security option to enable / disenable these permissions in future usages.

[0033] As previously noted in step S212 in FIG. 2, the ANC data, such as the ambient noise level (A) , the near-ear sound level (B) and the sound level difference (X) between the two, can be transmitted from the headphones to the user’s host device. In this regard, in step S320, once a headphone gets successfully paired with the user’s host device and is in a connected state, the App can be triggered to start running on the host device and continuously recording various received ANC data from the headphone in the backstage. In one and more embodiments, these ANC data (A, B and X) can be received from the headphone and recorded in the user’s host device in real-time. For example, both the headphone and the user host device may update and synchronize the ANC data (A, B and X) at a specific time interval, and the host device can support presenting these ANC data to the user at any time through displays on the user’s host device by the App, as shown in step S330.

[0034] In one example, the user’s host device can continuously receive and record the ANC data while its paired headphone remains connected therewith. The received ANC data can be stored in a storage of the host device for the App to read and call at any time necessary. For example, the user’s host device can record the ANC data received from different headphones, separately. The user’s host device can store the received ANC data and present them to the user from a different headphone, separately. Additionally or alternatively, the user’s host device can further collect and analyze the ANC data received from more than one headphones used to connect to the host device, and present them to the user, via the App displays.

[0035] In one and more embodiments, the user’s host device needs to enable the App to read time information or location information in the backstage, in order to record these ANC data received from the headphones in combination with factors of such as time or locations. In an example, the headphone may measure the volume regularly during the day when the user wears it, such as, the user may wear the headphone to record the ANC data on time while taking the subway to work every morning, while doing gyms after work, or playing games at home or others. The App may record the changes and patterns of the ANC data received and present them to the user at any time. In an example, it is known to the user’s host device that the audio stream signal played through the headphone, and thus the host device may also characterize the user’s auditory habit by recording these ANC data along with those audio stream signals for subsequent data analysis.

[0036] Regarding presenting the ANC data to the user, in step S340, the user can actively open the App on the host device to review the ANC data. The user can activate the App to check the ANC data while both using or not using the headphone, without pairing or connecting to the headphone again. In one and more embodiments, the user can check the ANC data received in real-time from the headphone by launching the App at any time when he / she needs to know the ambient noise situation. The user interface of the App enables the user to directly display the numerical values of the ANC data to the user, or to more intuitively display via various charts generated based on these ANC data. In an example, when the user intends to take off his headphone while riding the subway, he / she may like to firstly check the App on his / her handset to confirm the ambient noise level (A) surrounding, in order to get ready for taking off the headphone with an ensured safety of the noise level. In an example, when the user actively opens the App, the App can read the historical ANC data stored in the backstage from the storage and  further generate statistical results, which can be presented to the user through the App displays. Additional or alternatively, the user may personalize the displays of the App, according to his / her preferences through the options provided in the App. For example, the user can choose to display any of the ANC data when starting the App, such as the ambient noise level (A) , the near-ear sound level (B) , and / or the sound level difference (X) . For example, the user can also choose to when and how to generate and display certain historical records, statistical data, and / or data analysis results of the recorded ANC data.

[0037] Additional or alternatively, in step S350, the user may set the App through the App Performance Management (APM) on the host device, such as enabling push notifications, allowing backstage pop-up messages, or allowing floating windows. Upon these settings, the ANC data can be pushed to the user in real-time during the use of the headphone. For example, at any time during the usage of the headphone, the host device can present real-time numerical values and its changing tends of the ANC data received from the headphone connected thereto.

[0038] In an example, when the user is on moving through a highly noisy place, such as a construction site, a railway station, or a roadshow block, etc., the App should be able to automatically trigger notifications based on the ANC data, reminding the user of harmful sound. In another example, when the App detects that one or more of the received ANC data exceed certain thresholds, it can automatically prompt the user, through a pushed message or a backstage pop-up window, that the current environmental sound may affect hearing.

[0039] For example, the user can set a threshold value in the App for each of the ANC data, with the App automatically monitoring the level of the various ANC data. The sound volume is measured in weighted decibels. As an example, a critical decibel value of 100dB can be set as the threshold value for the near-ear sound level (B) of the ANC data. Any exposure to such level of volume for a few minutes may cause temporary hearing loss. In the example, once the average volume reaches or exceeds this set of 100dB for over 3 minutes, the App shall push a notification to the user to adopt noise reduction measures. Additionally or alternatively, the user may set different critical decibel value as the threshold value, for each of the ANC data, thought the App.

[0040] In yet another example, the user wearing the ANC headphone may often overlook the unconscious noise he / she encounters. For example, when the ambient noise increases, the user may subconsciously increase the volume of the audio playing in the headphone in mixing the increased noise background, so as to be able to hear the audio content more clearly. At this point,  upon the near-ear sound level (B) has been increasing over a certain threshold beyond the human tolerance, the App shall stop increasing the volume of the headphone, and automatically trigger a prompt function to remind the user of the possibility of hearing damage due to the excessive volume. For example, when the ambient noise just reaches a medium level, the App can automatically trigger the ANC function of the headphone, or automatically enhance such ANC function as the noise being increasing. For example, when the App detects a poor ANC function, which can be reflected by the poor sound level difference (X) reported of the headphone, the App can further automatically pop up a reminder, such as a prompt sound generated and played inside the earcups of the headphone to prompt the user to alter the posture of wearing the headphone, to better wrapping his / her ears, which may at least be better isolated from the external noise through the PNC function.

[0041] Several examples have been described above of presenting instantaneous ANC noise information, including various ANC data, to the user by using the App. In addition, the App may also present delayed ANC noise information to the user. As shown in step S360, In one and more embodiments, the App can perform data statistics and analysis for the ANC data recordings, periodically or for a certain period of time, according to the App settings, and then present the results to the user. For example, the App backend can calculate the ANC noise status based on weekly and daily time intervals, and report the results to the user, which can be used as the basis for analyzing the user’s impact on hearing during this period. For example, by analyzing the relationship between the energy accumulation, the loudness and the duration of the noise level recorded in the backstage of the App, the user’s hearing aging rate can be detected and evaluated based on these statistical values and analysis results. For example, the App can record a user’s lifestyle patterns with, such as, the daily commuting time by the subway in the morning and evening, as well as the noise ANC data recorded during this period. For example, the App can compare the ANC data weekly and generate corresponding prompts for the user based on the locations and times frequently visited.

[0042] The user can set various thresholds for each ANC data in the App. Exposure to a volume below 60dB may not cause damage to human hearing. On the contrary, while long-term exposure to an environment with a volume above 80 dB, the App shall prompt the user to consider taking hearing protection measures or moving to quieter areas by, such as, setting a time threshold for exposure to 80dB or above to a maximum of 5.5 hours daily, or 40 hours weekly, setting for  exposure to 90dB or above to a maximum of 0.5 hour daily, or 4 hours weekly, and as noted, as exposure to 100dB even for few minutes may cause temporary hearing loss, each exposure to this level of volume should not exceed 3 minutes, and the limit for weekly exposure is about 20 minutes. Additionally or alternatively, these various statistics and analyses can also be combined with the user’s age, environment, lifestyle and habits, and auditory preferences to provide different analysis results. The energy accumulation induced by long-term exposure to noise may have a profound impact, especially for underage people or children.

[0043] Additionally or alternatively, in steps S340, S350, and / or S360 mentioned above, when displaying these ANC data values with the APP displays, the results of the ANC data analysis can be displayed to the user in variety of forms, such as with texts, graphics and / or colors. By way of example, the corresponding sound intensity can be represented by different colors, such as, the ANC data can be presented in red for the sound pressure levels of the ambient noise level (A) and / or of the near-ear sound level (B) being higher than 80dB, or in yellow for 60-80dB, or in green for below 60dB, respectively. On the contrary, for the sound level difference (X) , the value can be presented in red when it is lower than 10dB, or in yellow for 10-25 dB, or in green for the value lower than 25dB, respectively. By way of example, it can be conceived that the specific values may be set and adjusted according to the product forms or the designed indicators.

[0044] The ANC data collected by headphones and presented via host devices may have valuable implications for users who enjoy wearing a headphone frequently for protecting their hearings. Firstly, when a user wears a headphone, the ambient noise level (A) detected indicates how noisy the outside environment is in real time. This data presented to the user can remind the user that he / she should be aware of the hearing protection when the noise is too loud or he / she usually exposes to noisy environments.

[0045] Secondly, the near-ear sound level (B) may indicate the sound volume heard by the user when he / she is wearing the headphone. When the headphone is not playing any audio, the near-ear sound level (B) can be detected as the noise level in the earcups that can be perceived by the user. When the headphone is playing an audio signal, such as a music, the near-ear sound level (B) monitored tells the user whether or not the audio volume is too loud to damage his / her hearing. Further, the user may acknowledge the level of noise that still can be perceived in the headphone by the near-ear sound level (B) with NC functions enabled, such as how many decibels displayed, in order to prevent the headphone volume from being set too high in noisy environments to hear  the audio played by the headphone clearly.

[0046] In addition, the sound level difference (X) represents a noise level actually reduced through the headphone within the overall audible frequency range. The user can compare the sound level difference (X) reported in real-time from the headphone with the initial ANC level set for the headphone to evaluate the NC performance thereof. The reason for the difference between the two may be that: the ANC function of the headphone can be set according to different frequency bands. Therefore, the user can configure the ANC performance of the headphone in a targeted manner when using it.

[0047] In another aspect, the user can obtain more useful information though the headphone and the APP, such as the usage time of the headphone, the period and volume level for the user exposure to a noise environment in daily, or weekly, subway travel, and the relationship between the energy, loudness, and time of sound during the use of the headphone. For the environment in which the user is located, the APP displays may also be used to alert whether the current headphone playback volume and noise level are harmful to hearing, thereby notifying the user to timely avoid noise pollution.

[0048] The inventive subject matter provides a hearing protection monitoring solution by measuring the ambient noise level and the user’s perceived noise level by using a headphone. The provided method may be implemented using an existing hardware architecture without any additional components, thus no extra hardware cost is required. It enables the headphone to notify the user the quantitative noise cancellation data and whether or not he / she is exposed to harmful noise or sound levels, via the headphone itself and APP displays. For a longer period of time, people can also use this feature, by checking their host devices, to see if they have experienced hearing loss and if they can only hear clearly when the perceived sound level has to be higher than before.

[0049] In the foregoing specification, the inventive subject matter has been described with reference to specific embodiments thereof. It will, however, be evident that various modifications and changes may be made thereto without departing from the broader scope of the inventive subject matter. For example, the above-described process flows are described with reference to a particular ordering of process actions. However, the ordering of many of the described process actions may be changed without affecting the scope or operation of the inventive subject matter. The specification and drawings are, accordingly, to be regarded in an illustrative rather than  restrictive sense.

[0050] Any combination of one or more computer-readable media may be used to perform the method provided in one and more embodiments of the present inventive subject matter. The computer-readable medium may be a computer-readable signal medium or a computer-readable storage medium. The computer-readable storage medium may be, for example, but not limited to, an electronic, magnetic, optical, electromagnetic, infrared, or semiconductor system, apparatus, or device, or any suitable combination of the foregoing. More specific examples (non-exhaustive list) of the computer-readable storage medium may include, for example: an electrical connection with one or more wires, portable computer floppy disks, hard disks, random access memory (RAM) , read-read-only memory (ROM) , erasable programmable read only memory (EPROM or flash memory) , optical fibers, portable compact disc read only memory (CD-ROM) , optical storage devices, magnetic storage devices, or any suitable combinations of the foregoing. In the context of the disclosure, the computer-readable storage medium may be any tangible medium that can include or store a program for use by or in connection with an instruction execution system, apparatus, or device.

[0051] As used in the disclosure, an element or step listed in the singular form and preceded by the word “one / a” should be understood as not excluding a plurality of said elements or steps, unless such exception is specifically stated. Furthermore, references to “embodiments” or “examples” of the disclosure are not intended to be construed as exclusive, also including the existence of other embodiments of the recited features. The terms “first” , “second” , “third” , etc. are used only for identification and are not intended to emphasize a numerical requirement or positioning order of their objects.
