[0066] The below ASTM methods were employed for the tests in the invention.

[0067] The thin film set time (TFST) , which is a renowned indicator of thin film curing speed, was measured by following the ASTM D5895 with a BK drying time recorder. The thin film set time is categorized in 4 stages: phase 1, set to touch; phase 2, tack free; phase 3, dry hard; and phase 4, dry through. The phase 2 dry time is indicative of the tack free time of a thin film and phase 3 dry time is indicative of how fast a coating cures and dries with a 150 microns wet film thickness.

[0068] Impact resistance of coating was performed by following ASTM D2794-84 to check when the organic coating would fail with crack and adhesion loss when subject to rapid deformation.

[0069] Mandrel bend test was defined by ASTM D522 to evaluate the flexibility of the organic film.

[0070] Tensile properties, i.e. tensile strength, Young’s modulus and elongation at break were evaluated according to ASTM D412 with dumbbell shaped specimens which were prepared by mixing the resin part with curing agent part followed by curing procedure at 40℃ for 24h before tensile test. Meanwhile, the toughness of each specimen was defined by the area under the stress-strain curve.

[0071] Cross-cut test for adhesion between a coating and a coated surface of substrate was measured according to DIN EN ISO 2409.

[0072] Furthermore, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a corrosion resistance test method that measures the impedance of a coating at different frequencies. The pore resistance can deliver the barrier performance of the coating and its corrosion resistance, to moisture permeation, etc. The pore resistance was measured by following ISO 16773.

[0073] Among all tests, D.E.R. TM 331 was used as liquid epoxy resin which is a standard diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. Amine hydrogen equivalent weight in g / mol, or AHEW, was calculated as molecular weight of the amine divided by the number of amine hydrogen atoms per molecule.Examples

[0074] Examples 1-5 followed the following synthesis procedures. All comparative examples either used the reaction products synthesized in Examples 1-2 along with other commercial curing agents, additives, and solvents, or solely used commercial curing agents.Example 1

[0075] 1) . Preparation of m-xylylenediamine Mannich base 90g (0.3 mol) refined cashew nutshell liquid and 61.2g (0.45 mol) m-xylylenediamine  were firstly blended in a four neck round bottom flask at 80℃ for one hour to ensure that the reaction materials were thoroughly mixed. Subsequently, 48.6g 37wt. %formaldehyde (0.6 mol neat formaldehyde) was slowly added in the mixture from last step with a controlled feeding speed about 1 ml / min with nitrogen atmosphere followed by holding at 100℃ with refluxing for another one hour. Further reaction was done at elevated temperature at 150℃ for 2 hours to distill away water produced from the reaction.

[0076] 2) . Preparation of 3, 3’- (oxybis (2, 1-ethane-diyloxy) ) bis-1-popanamine based polyamide 33.6g dimerized fatty acid (0.58 mol) and 38.7g (1.76 mol) 3, 3’- (oxybis (2, 1-ethane- diyloxy) ) bis-1-popanamine were thoroughly mixed and heated to 210℃ in nitrogen purge followed by holding for 3 hours until theoretic amount of water was condensed and collected.

[0077] 3) . Preparation of the curing agent composition of Example 1 48g product from step 1 above, 30g product from step 2 above, 14 g 2-naphthol and  8g benzyl alcohol were thoroughly mixed at 60℃ and then ready for use with standard epoxy resin D.E.R. TM 331.

[0078] Without wishing to be bound by any theory, the inventors believe that in Example 1, the Mannich base produced in step 1 can contribute a standard curing speed due to the acceleration effect from in-build structure of phenolic group on CNSL and the remained reactive amine group from m-xylylenediamine at low temperature. Meanwhile, the polyamide achieved in step 2 can provide an excellent adhesion on metal by virtue of its polar amide group and excellent flexibility because of its polyether nature in the molecular structure. Furthermore, 2-naphthol with dual roles in the composition was added to further improve the drying speed and flexibility without compromising the corrosion resistance.

[0079] The curing agent produced in Example 1 was well mixed with standard epoxy resin D.E.R. TM 331 with a 1: 1 stoichiometry and subsequently applied on substrates for performance tests.

[0080] It can be found in Table 1 that at 5 ℃ the applied thin film could reach a surface dry in 6 hours and hard dry within 9 hours. It also demonstrated great adhesion on steel substrate with a cross-cut best rating 5. Excellent impact resistance and flexibility were achieved with value of 110 / 110 kg. cm (direct / reverse) and < 1mm mandrel test, respectively. The mechanical properties such as Young’s modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break and toughness were also measured and shown in Table 1.85.3%of elongation at break clearly exhibited the exceptional inherently flexibility of the epoxy system of this invention while traditional epoxy system can only achieve < 30%. Furthermore, the pore resistance indicating the corrosion resistance was found to be 9.8 x 109 which was also among the best level for epoxy system at 0.1Hz frequency.Example 2

[0081] 1) . Preparation of polyethyleneamine epoxy adduct 48.9g ethylene diamine was placed in a four neck round flask and then 30g epoxy  resin D.E.R. TM 331 was gradually added. The temperature was elevated to about 80℃ and nitrogen purge were applied constantly for one hour after the resin charge. Then the product was heated to 130℃ to distill the excess amount of ethylene diamine to form the final ethylene diamine-epoxy adduct with a narrow molecular weight distribution.

[0082] 2) . Preparation of the curing agent composition of Example 2 48g product from step 1, 30g product from step 2 in Example 1, 14 g 2-naphthol, and  8g benzyl alcohol were thoroughly mixed at 60℃ for one hour and ready for use with standard epoxy resin.

[0083] In Example 2, unlike the effect of Mannich base in Example 1, polyamine adduct synthesized in step 1 can provide a fast lacquer dry due to its high molecular weight along with fast dry hard.

[0084] Likewise, the curing agent produced in Example 2 was well mixed with standard epoxy resin D.E.R. TM 331 with a 1: 1 stoichiometry and subsequently applied on substrates for performance tests. It can be found in Table 1 that at 5℃the applied thin film can reach a surface dry in 5.4 hours and hard dry within 8 hours. It also demonstrated great adhesion on steel substrate with a cross-cut best rating 5. Excellent impact resistance and flexibility were achieved with value greater than 110 / 110 kg. cm (direct / reverse) and < 1mm mandrel test, respectively. The mechanical properties such as Young’s modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break and toughness were also measured and shown in Table 1.67.4 %of elongation at break with a toughness of 67.3 J·m-3 exhibited the good flexibility and ductile nature of the epoxy system of this example while traditional epoxy system was more brittle. Furthermore, the pore resistance of Example 2 with a value of 7.0 x 108 at 0.1Hz frequency also indicated a good corrosion resistance.Example 3

[0085] A curing agent of Example 3 was produced according to the same steps as those in Example 1, except that 1-naphthol was used instead of 2-naphthol. The curing agent produced in Example 3 was well mixed with standard epoxy resin D.E.R. TM 331 with a 1: 1 stoichiometry and subsequently applied on substrates for performance tests.Example 4

[0086] A curing agent of Example 4 was produced according to the same steps as those in Example 2, except that 1-naphthol was used instead of 2-naphthol. The curing agent produced in Example 4 was well mixed with standard epoxy resin D.E.R. TM 331 with a 1: 1 stoichiometry and subsequently applied on substrates for performance tests.

[0087] It can be found that all performance properties of the curing agent of Example 3 and Example 4 were in the same level as Example 1 and Example 2.Example 5 and Example 6

[0088] Likewise, Example 5 and Example 6 were two analogues to Example 1 and Example 2 respectively in order to further demonstrate the similar performance effect of both 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol in the formulation.

[0089] Example 5 carried out the same steps as those of Example 1, except that instead of using 14 g 2-naphthol, Example 5 used 7 g 1-naphthol and 7 g 2-naphthol.

[0090] Example 6 carried out the same steps as those of Example 2, except that instead of using 14 g 2-naphthol, Example 5 used 7 g 1-naphthol and 7 g 2-naphthol.Example 7 and Example 8

[0091] A curing agent of Example 7 was produced according to the same steps as those in Example 1, except that lower amount of component a1 and higher amount of component b were used while higher amount of 2-naphthol was also added in Example 7.

[0092] A curing agent of Example 8 was produced according to the same steps as those in Example 1, except that a mixture of component a1 and a2 was used in Example 8.

[0093] The curing agents produced in Examples 7 and 8 were well mixed with standard epoxy resin D.E.R. TM 331 with a 1: 1 stoichiometry and subsequently applied on substrates for performance tests.

[0094] As shown in Table 1, similarly to Example 1 and Example 2, the curing agents of Examples 5-8 achieved good performance properties.Comparative examples 1-7

[0095] In Comparative Examples 1-5, other phenolic accelerator such as bisphenol A, styrenated phenol and representative tertiary amine tris-2, 4, 6-dimethylaminomethyl phenol were included in the composition shown in Tables 1 and 2 to compare the performance. In Comparative Examples 6-7, compositions without component c were prepared.

[0096] As shown in Tables 1 and 2, 1-naphthol showed a very similar effect as 2-naphthol in the composition in every aspect which can be attributed to their similar structure. However, other phenolic additives showed stark differences in performance. Comparative Example 2 and Comparative Example 5 were respective counterparts to Example 1 and Example 2 by replacing 2-nathpthol to styrenated phenol, Novares LS500 from Rain Carbon Inc. It was found that LS500 had less effective acceleration than 2-nathpthol at low temperature and had inferior flexibility. Meanwhile, Comparative Example 3, an analogue of Example 1, used Bisphenol A, and it not only showed inferior flexibility in terms of elongation at break in the composition than 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol, it also degraded the corrosion resistance to one or two orders of magnitude in the pore resistance value delivered by EIS.

[0097] It is also clear in Comparative Example 1 and Comparative Example 4 that tertiary amine had a strong acceleration to the composition, but the flexibility was significantly reduced as shown in mandrel test, impact resistance and elongation at break. In Comparative examples 6 and 7 wherein the compositions had no component c or naphthol, the drying speed and flexibility were much worse that the inventive examples. Table 1 E1 represents Example 1, E2 to E8 represents Example 2 to Example 8, respectively Table 2

[0098] **CE1 represents Comparative Example 1, CE2 to CE7 represents Comparative Example 2 to Comparative Example 7, respectively.

[0099] Furthermore, two representative commercial products 2636 and  910 were compared to the curing agent composition of the invention under the same testing conditions. As shown in Table 3,  2636 exhibited comparable drying speed but the flexibility was far below the curing agents of Example 1 and Example 2.  910 although had good flexibility but the drying speed was way out of the scope of low temperature cure which was not feasible to be used at low temperature applications.
