Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of a Chinese invention patent application filed on May 5, 2015, with national application number 201580039136.6 and invention name “ANTENNA DEVICE AND CONNECTOR FOR ANTENNA DEVICE”. Technical Field

[0002] The invention relates to an antenna device. Background Art

[0003] With the rapid development of smart phones and other types of cellular mobile phones, the amount of data communication has increased rapidly. Antenna devices suitable for broadband radio frequency (RF) signal transmission play an important role in mobile telecommunications and are therefore widely used in cellular mobile systems. In order to cope with the increasing demand for data transmission rates, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna devices including multiple antenna radiating elements have become increasingly important.

[0004] However, antennas suitable for RF signal transmission must meet very specific design requirements in order to obtain optimal RF characteristics. For example, the shape of the antenna radiating element and its arrangement within the antenna device, as well as the way it is connected to the feeder cable, often must meet strict standards.

[0005] WO 2007048258 A1 in the name of the same applicant was published on May 3, 2007 and shows an antenna device with a broadband monopole antenna suitable for RF applications. The application discloses an antenna having two conductive base bodies adjacent to each other, which are arranged on a conductive substrate. The two conductive base bodies are connected to the substrate by means of connecting means. According to the invention, the RF power is fed via a coaxial cable, the outer conductor of which is connected to the substrate, and the inner conductor of which is connected to a feeding point arranged at one of these conductive base bodies close to the substrate.

[0006] WO 2005060048 A1 in the name of KATHREIN-WERKE KG was published on June 30, 2005 and shows a broadband antenna. The application discloses an antenna comprising a cup-shaped transmitter arranged on a substrate, which protrudes outward from the substrate. The substrate comprises a through opening arranged at the foot point of the transmitter. A rod-shaped coupling element extends through the opening and can be connected to a feeder line for the antenna. The rod-shaped coupling element is inserted into a tube-shaped coupling element arranged at the transmitter. The two coupling elements are not galvanically connected to each other and can therefore be separated by an electrical insulator.

[0007] US 8299372 B2 was published on October 30, 2012 and describes an antenna universal mounting joint connector. The document shows an angle connector that can be used to connect a coaxial cable to an antenna. The connector according to the document includes a plurality of sleeve-like parts and pins, which implies a minimum size to allow proper assembly. The document further discloses that the connector according to the invention can be connected to a mounting surface (board) using a mounting nut. In the mounted state, the first part of the connector is positioned on one side of the mounting plate, while the second part is positioned on the other side, resulting in a relatively high overall height.

[0008] EP 2175521A1 in the name of PC-TEL INC. was published on April 14, 2010. The document relates to a multi-band antenna operating in at least two non-harmonically related frequency bands. The antenna comprises a ground plane and a conical relatively high frequency antenna element having a tip of a high frequency antenna arranged adjacent to the ground plane but electrically insulated from the ground plane, and a base of the conical antenna element extending away from the ground plane. At least three relatively low frequency antenna elements are electrically connected to the base of the conical antenna element and the ground plane and extend between the base of the conical antenna element and the ground plane. Summary of the invention

[0009] In many cases, the above standards for the RF components of the antenna device may conflict with other requirements for the antenna device, for example, requirements regarding the maximum outer dimensions of the antenna device or the manner in which such an antenna device is connected to a feeder cable. This is particularly true for antenna applications on vehicles, such as trains, light rail vehicles, buses and other types of vehicles.

[0010] Such an antenna can, for example, be used as a repeater allowing passengers to use their cellular phones in the vehicle. Therefore, the antenna device is typically positioned on the roof of a road vehicle or rail vehicle and is connected to an antenna device inside the vehicle by a cable. In order to reduce air resistance and in the case of many electric rail vehicles in order to maintain a minimum distance to the overhead contact wires, such an antenna device needs to have a relatively small overall height. Furthermore, a low-profile antenna device can be advantageous for indoor use (correspondingly indoor communications), where an unobtrusive flat design may be desired. Furthermore, in order to prevent water intrusion into the vehicle, the number of ports required in the roof of the vehicle for connecting the antenna device positioned on the roof must be as small as possible.

[0011] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an antenna device suitable for MIMO applications, which antenna device has a low profile and thus a relatively small height.

[0012] It is a further object of the present invention to provide an antenna device having more than one antenna radiating element, which antenna device comprises a low number of connection ports.

[0013] Another object of the present invention is to provide a connector that can be used to connect a coaxial cable to a radiating antenna element.

[0014] According to one aspect of the present invention, an antenna device that can be used for radio frequency MIMO applications includes a substrate that is at least partially conductive. However, the antenna device according to the present invention is not limited to the type of application described. The substrate can be made of metal (e.g., aluminum alloy or steel). The substrate can also be made of a conductive non-metallic material. The substrate can also be made of an electrically insulating material or a material with low or medium conductivity including one or more conductive coatings (e.g., a metal coating of a plastic material). The substrate can be integrally formed or can be assembled from multiple parts. According to the present invention, the substrate has a top surface defining a top horizontal plane and a bottom surface defining a bottom horizontal plane. If relatively small protrusions and / or depressions arranged at the top surface are ignored, the top horizontal plane can be considered to be a horizontal plane defined by the top surface. If relatively small protrusions and / or depressions at the bottom surface are ignored, the bottom horizontal plane can be considered to be a horizontal plane defined by the bottom surface. The top surface and / or the bottom surface may include a plurality of depressions and / or protrusions, such as small holes, grooves, channels, platforms, pins, etc. The antenna device further includes a first cup-shaped antenna radiating element and a second cup-shaped antenna radiating element. It is clear that the antenna device according to the present invention is not limited to two antenna radiating elements and can therefore also include three, four, five, six or more antenna radiating elements, for example, as required for MIMO applications. The first antenna radiating element and the second antenna radiating element can be radiating elements of the same type or can be radiating elements of different types. The shape of such an antenna radiating element can also be described as conical and / or pyramidal. However, within this context, only a portion of the antenna can also be bowl-shaped and / or cup-shaped and / or conical and / or pyramidal, while other portions can be shaped differently. The antenna further has a vertex arranged near the top horizontal plane of the substrate. For some purposes, the antenna radiating element can also include more than one vertex. In contrast to the vertex, the antenna further includes an opening arranged away from the top horizontal plane of the substrate. The opening can also be covered by a cover device. If appropriate, other components can be arranged in the opening, as will be described in detail below. Alternatively or additionally, the opening can also be completely or partially filled with a filling material, such as an insulating material. The first antenna radiating element and the second antenna radiating element are both arranged above the substrate and spaced apart from each other at a distance. Both antenna radiating elements are electrically interconnected with the substrate. Such electrical interconnection can be obtained, for example, by forming the antenna radiating elements and the substrate in one piece. Alternatively or additionally, the antenna radiating elements can be mechanically or electrically connected to the substrate by at least one supporting device, which can be a bracket as will be described in more detail below. Furthermore, the first antenna radiating element is electrically interconnected in the region of its apex with the inner conductor of the first coaxial cable, which inner conductor is arranged above the bottom horizontal plane in the region of the apex.Likewise, the second antenna radiating element is electrically interconnected with the inner conductor of the second coaxial cable in the region of its vertices, the inner conductor being arranged above the bottom horizontal plane in the region of the vertices. The electrical interconnection can be established at the vertices. However, the electrical interconnection can also be established at a certain distance from the one or more vertices. The electrical interconnection can be obtained, for example, by direct mechanical contact (for example, by soldering joints and / or fusion welding joints and / or clamps) and / or capacitive coupling. The substrate according to the present invention further comprises at least one port arranged in the bottom surface of the substrate. The port can be a through hole extending from the top surface to the bottom surface and / or a recess in the bottom surface. The port can include a plurality of (sub)ports, for example, a plurality of complete openings and / or recesses.

[0015] For some purposes, the port of the antenna device can be arranged in the area between the first antenna radiating element and the second antenna radiating element, wherein at least one of these coaxial cables extends across the bottom horizontal plane of the substrate through the port. If appropriate, the first coaxial cable and the second coaxial cable pass through the same port or the same component of the same group of subports / subports. Additional coaxial cables and / or other types of cables can pass through the same port or the same group of subports. This can be applicable to antenna devices with more than two antenna radiating elements and / or auxiliary antennas or electronic devices (e.g., GPS modules). For some applications, mass transfer can also occur through the port, for example, a cooling medium can pass through the port in two directions. If appropriate, the inner conductor of the first coaxial cable and the second coaxial cable is located between the vertex and the port, which is basically arranged between the top horizontal plane and the bottom horizontal plane. Therefore, at least a portion of these coaxial cables can be arranged between the top horizontal plane and the bottom horizontal plane.

[0016] For some purposes, the substrate may include at least one channel in which at least one inner conductor is arranged. Such a channel may allow for mechanically and electrically advantageous cable routing (laying). If appropriate, at least one channel may be arranged in the top and / or bottom surfaces of the substrate. The channel may, for example, include a groove or may be a groove. For some purposes, the channel may also extend substantially within the substrate, so that the channel is invisible from the top and bottom of the substrate. Such a channel arranged within the substrate may, for example, be obtained using a substrate constructed of two or more layers. If appropriate, at least one inner conductor arranged in the at least one channel may be a part of a coaxial cable. Alternatively or additionally, the channel may also be filled with a solid insulator and / or a foam insulator supporting a coaxial cable and / or an inner conductor. If appropriate, the inner channel may also be filled with air, wherein the inner conductor is supported by a plurality of spacer elements. If desired, the boundary wall of the channel may be connected to the outer conductor of the coaxial cable or may be the outer conductor of the coaxial cable.

[0017] If appropriate, each of these antenna radiating elements is fixed to the substrate by at least one bracket. Such a bracket can be used to keep the antenna in a predetermined position relative to the substrate and to obtain a specified kind of electrical connection between the substrate and the antenna radiating element. The bracket can be, for example, a column, a cylinder or a tube and can be connected to the substrate, for example, by a soldered joint, a fusion welded joint, a screw connection or another type of connection suitable for obtaining a certain type of mechanical and / or electrical connection. A good connection can be achieved if the substrate includes protrusions and / or depressions (for example, raised platforms or small holes) at the contact area (contact area) with the bracket. For some applications, good results can be obtained using two or three brackets for each antenna radiating element. Depending on the application, at least one bracket can be arranged at a distance from the vertex of the antenna radiating element in order to increase mechanical stability and optimize the radiation characteristics.

[0018] The connector may be embedded in the substrate between the vertex and the bottom horizontal plane of at least one antenna radiating element. Such a connector may include an inner conductor that is electrically interconnected with the antenna radiating element in the installed position and with the inner conductor of the coaxial cable associated therewith. If the inner conductor is inserted into an opening arranged in the top and / or bottom surface of the substrate, good results, such as a minimum overall height of the antenna device, can be obtained. Such an opening may, for example, be a through hole or a blind hole. If appropriate, the connector may be press-fitted into an opening arranged in the top and / or bottom surface of the substrate. For some purposes, the inner conductor of the connector may include an opening in which the inner conductor of the coaxial cable associated therewith is arranged. Such an opening may, for example, be a slot or a lateral hole. If the opening is arranged at the proximal end of the inner conductor of the connector, good results may be obtained.

[0019] For some purposes, the inner conductor of the connector may be a pin that extends into a socket arranged at the antenna radiating element. Such a socket may be arranged in the region of the apex of the antenna radiating element and protrude into the opening of the antenna radiating element. The socket may be press-fit into the antenna radiating element or may be integrally formed with the antenna radiating element. If appropriate, the socket may include a plurality of spring fingers that may be in mechanical and electrical connection with the distal region of the pin. Such mechanical and electrical connection may be obtained by circumferential contact points between the distal region of the pin and these spring fingers. If desired, these contact points may also be positioned at another region of the pin.

[0020] Alternatively, the inner conductor of the connector may be a socket in which a pin arranged at the first antenna radiating element or the second antenna radiating element may be positioned in the mounted state.

[0021] If appropriate, an insulator may be arranged in the opening of the connector, thereby supporting the inner conductor. Such an insulator may be made of PTFE, PE, a ceramic material or another material with suitable dielectric and mechanical properties. Depending on the application, good results may be obtained if the insulator is separated from the antenna radiating element by a first gap.

[0022] For some purposes, the connector may include a connector body that can be electrically interconnected with the outer conductor of the first coaxial cable or the second coaxial cable. If appropriate, the connector body can be integrally formed with the substrate. The connector body can also include a connector port that is arranged on a side that turns away from the connected antenna radiator element. Such a port can be used to access an area where the inner conductor of the coaxial cable and the inner conductor of the connector may have to be connected, for example, by soldering and / or welding. When the connector is in an installed state, the port can be covered by the substrate to form a shield to avoid RF leakage.

[0023] For some applications, the antenna device may further include at least one GPS module (antenna), which may be arranged in the opening of the antenna radiating element. Such GPS module (antenna) may be interconnected with an auxiliary cable, which extends from the opening of the antenna radiating element to a passage arranged in the bracket of the antenna radiating element, leading to a channel arranged in the substrate, which may extend to the at least one port arranged in the bottom surface of the substrate.

[0024] For some purposes, the antenna device may include a radome arranged on the top surface of the substrate. Such a radome may be fastened using screws and may be sealed using corresponding radome gaskets. Depending on the application, the radome may provide protection against weather and / or air currents and / or vandalism, etc. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

The connector 50 is connected to the antenna radiating element 5 and the coaxial cable 30. For illustrative purposes, the coaxial cable 30 is not shown in cross section. Fig.11 In FIG. 1 , a portion of an embodiment of an antenna device 1 is shown, wherein the antenna radiating element 6 is partially cut away for illustrative purposes. Fig.12 It is shown in Fig.11 Details of D.

[0040] As in Figure 1 As shown in , the antenna device 1 may have a longitudinal cubic shape. The inner section of the antenna device 1 shown is covered by a radome 18 arranged on the substrate 2. The antenna device 1 as shown further includes a first coaxial cable 30 and a second coaxial cable 31 and an auxiliary cable 26, which may be a coaxial cable or a non-coaxial cable. Figure 2 As shown in the figure, the antenna device 1 may include a port 9 in its bottom surface 4 through which the cables 26, 30, 31 pass into the inner section of the antenna device 1. In addition, a substrate gasket 17 may be arranged on the bottom surface. When mounted on a vehicle, the substrate gasket may serve as a sealant between the antenna device 1 and the roof of the vehicle (not shown) in order to prevent water from intruding into the port 9 of the antenna device 1 and / or a port arranged in the roof of the vehicle.

[0041] As in Figure 3 As can be seen in , the antenna device 1 may comprise, for example, a radome gasket 19 arranged on its top surface 3. For attaching the radome 18, the base plate 2 may comprise first fastening holes 14, into which screws (not shown) can be inserted from the bottom side of the base plate 2 in order to connect the radome 18. Furthermore, the base plate 2 may also comprise second fastening holes 15, which are capable of receiving screws (not shown) in order to screw the base plate, for example, to the roof of a vehicle. If preferred, even these second fastening holes 15 may be accessible when mounting the radome 18, such as in Figure 1. The antenna device 1 may include a first antenna radiating element 5 and a second antenna radiating element 6 arranged on the top surface 3 of the substrate 2 by means of a bracket 11, as will be explained in more detail below. The antenna radiating elements 5, 6 may have a cup-like or bowl-like shape including an opening 8. In some embodiments, the antenna device 1 may include one or more additional electronic devices 25 (e.g., a GPS module) arranged in the opening 8. The first antenna radiating element 5 and the second antenna radiating element 6 are connected to a first coaxial cable 30 and a second coaxial cable 31, which extend from these antenna radiating elements 5, 6 to a port 9 positioned between the antenna radiating elements 5, 6. The coaxial cables 30, 31 pass through the substrate 2 through the port 9. A cable deflection element 40 is arranged in the port. The additional electronic device 25 is connected to an auxiliary cable 26, which may also extend to the port 9 and pass through the substrate 2.

[0042] As in Figure 4 As shown in , in some embodiments of the antenna device, the coaxial cable 31 can be at least partially arranged in the channel 10, which is arranged in the top surface 3, and the inner conductor (not shown) of the coaxial cable 31 is at least partially located between the top horizontal plane L1 defined by the top surface 3 and the bottom horizontal plane L2 defined by the bottom surface (not shown) of the substrate 2. The top and bottom horizontal planes L1, L2 are schematically indicated by virtual planes.

[0043] The antenna radiating element 6 is in electrical contact with the inner conductor of the coaxial cable 31 by means of a connector 50, which is arranged in an opening 12 arranged in the top surface 3. The connector 50 comprises an inner conductor 52 formed as a pin, which is connected at its proximal end (not shown) to the inner conductor of the coaxial cable 31 and whose distal end (in the mounted state) is inserted into the socket 13 of the antenna radiating element 6. The connection will be explained in more detail below.

[0044] As in Figure 5 As shown in , an embodiment of the connector 50 may include a connector body 51. An insulator 56 is arranged in an opening 53 extending from a top surface to a bottom surface of the connector body 51. The insulator 56 partially protrudes from the opening 53. An inner conductor 52 is arranged in the insulator 51, and the inner conductor 52 is formed similar to a pin in the embodiment shown. The connector body 51 may further include a shoulder 58, which may be beneficial for obtaining a proper press-fit connection between the connector body 51 and the opening 12 in the substrate. The connector 50 may include a small hole on one side, into which the coaxial cable 30 may be inserted. As shown, the coaxial cable 30 may include a jacket, a portion of which may be removed to expose the outer conductor 34 of the coaxial cable 30. As shown in Figure 6 As shown in FIG. 1 , the connector 50 may also include a port 63 that may be used to access the proximal region 54 of the inner conductor 52 so as to connect it to the inner conductor of the coaxial cable 30, for example. Figure 7 As shown in FIG. The inner conductor 52 of the connector 50 includes an opening 57 in the form of a slot that can receive the inner conductor 32 of the coaxial cable 30. A first electrical connection 59 between the outer conductor 34 of the coaxial cable 30 and the connector body 51 can be obtained by soldering. A second electrical connection 60 between the inner conductor 32 of the coaxial cable 30 and the inner conductor 52 of the connector can also be obtained by soldering. Fig. 9 More details are shown in .

[0045] As in Fig.10 As can be seen in the figure, the connector can be arranged in the opening 12, which in this embodiment of the antenna device 1 is arranged at the top surface 3 of the substrate 2. In the installed state, the connector body 51 is basically arranged between the top and bottom horizontal planes L1, L2. This also applies to the inner conductor 32 of the coaxial cable 30. As shown in Figure 7 and Fig. 9 As shown in , the outer conductor of the coaxial cable 30 is in electrical contact with the connector body 51. Fig.10 As shown in , the connector body 51 is press-fitted into the opening 12 and is therefore in electrical contact with the substrate 2. Thus, the outer conductor 32 is electrically connected to the substrate 2. Fig.10 The opening 12 shown in the figure is positioned close to the vertex 7 of the antenna radiating element 6. At the vertex 7, a sleeve-like socket is arranged in a through hole, which is arranged in the antenna radiating element 6. The sleeve-like socket 13 is press-fitted in the through hole, extends into the opening 8 of the antenna radiating element 6, and protrudes from the inner surface 22 of the antenna radiating element 6. The socket includes a spring clamp finger 23, which is arranged in the opening 8 and applies a radial contact force on the distal region 55 of the inner conductor 52 arranged in the sleeve 13, thereby establishing an electrical connection between the inner conductor 52 and the sleeve 13 at a predetermined contact point. A small first gap 61 is arranged between the insulator 56 and the vertex 7. Similarly, a second gap 54 is arranged between the bottom surface of the opening 12 and the bottom surface of the connector 50.

[0046] As in Fig.11 As shown in FIG. 1 , a GPS module 25 or other electronic device may be arranged in the opening 8 of the antenna radiating element 6. The GPS module 25 is connected to an auxiliary cable 26 extending from the opening 8 to a passage 20 arranged in one of the two brackets 11, to a channel 10 arranged at the top surface 3 of the substrate 2, to a port 9, as shown in FIG. Figure 3 As shown in .

[0047] As in Fig.12 As shown in FIG. 1 , the support 11 may be arranged on a raised platform 16 that protrudes from the top surface 3 of the substrate 2 .
