Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of JT International Corporation's invention patent application (filing date is February 5, 2016, application number is 201680009127.7, invention name is "aerosol guiding device and aerosol generating system including the aerosol guiding device"). Technical Field

[0002] The present invention relates to an aerosol guiding device and an aerosol generating system comprising the aerosol guiding device, and more particularly to an aerosol guiding device for controlling and changing an airflow used in an aerosol generating system (such as an electronic cigarette). Background Art

[0003] Aerosol generating systems (such as electronic cigarettes) are becoming more and more well-known in the art. The working principle of these electronic cigarettes is generally focused on providing flavored vapor to the user without burning the material. Some known devices include a capillary wick and a coil heater, which the user can activate by suctioning on the mouthpiece of the device, or, for example, by actuating a button on the device. This turns on a battery power source that activates the heater, which vaporizes the liquid or solid material. The suction on the mouthpiece also causes air to be drawn into the device through one or more air inlets and toward the mouthpiece via the capillary wick, and the steam generated near the capillary wick mixes with the air from the air inlet and is sent to the mouthpiece as an aerosol.

[0004] An important factor in the design of an aerosol generating system (such as an electronic cigarette) is the regulation of the airflow within the system, which affects the quality and quantity of the aerosol delivered to the user. The particle size of the aerosol is also a major consideration, and the optimal particle size of the aerosol can determine the optimal delivery of the aerosol to the lungs; aerosol particles with a diameter greater than, for example, 1.0 microns can be trapped or obstructed before they reach the lungs, and aerosol particles with a diameter less than, for example, 1.0 microns can be more effectively delivered to the lungs.

[0005] Some attempts have been made to solve the above problems. For example, by the device of EP2319334A1, the air velocity can be controlled in the device by changing the cross-sectional area of the airflow path upstream of the capillary wick so as to utilize the Venturi effect. The speed of the airflow flowing through the contraction cross section increases, thereby satisfying the principle of continuity, and its pressure must be reduced so that the mechanical energy is conserved. Similarly, the speed of the airflow flowing through the wider cross section must be reduced on the contrary, and its pressure increases.

[0006] However, a problem with known devices that attempt to control airflow velocity is that inconsistencies within the system due to, for example, manufacturing tolerances, or due to external factors such as different puffs by users can cause the resultant airflow within the aerosol generating system to vary. For example, the pressure drop in the vaporization chamber of existing models of electronic cigarettes sometimes varies widely between 40 mmWC and 250 mmWC, more commonly between 100 mmWC and 125 mmWC. In addition, the pressure drop achieved in the vaporization chamber used by electronic cigarettes of the same model often has significant inconsistencies. Another problem is that if these inconsistencies occur in a particular design of the electronic cigarette, it is almost impossible to modify the design to further change the airflow, resulting in a lack of adaptability of the entire system.

[0007] Due to the inconsistency of the pressure drop within existing aerosol generation systems, it is possible that when a user takes a puff on the mouthpiece, no liquid material or solid material to be vaporized may be present on the wick. This results in an undesirable effect known as "dry puffing", in which the capillary wick burns through the heater and the user experiences a burnt taste. In other cases, there may be too much liquid material or solid material on the capillary wick, in which case the heater is unable to vaporize all of the material, resulting in low system efficiency. Summary of the invention

[0008] The present invention seeks to provide an aerosol generating system, such as an electronic cigarette, which overcomes the above problems and includes a flexible and improved means for varying and regulating the airflow within the aerosol generating system.

[0009] The present inventors have recognised that a greater degree of flexibility and control is needed to enhance the smoking experience of aerosol generating systems such as electronic cigarettes.

[0010] Therefore, from one aspect of the present invention, there is provided an aerosol generating system, the system comprising: an aerosol generating device; an aerosol delivery device; and an aerosol guiding device, wherein the aerosol guiding device comprises a chamber having an air inlet and an air outlet, the aerosol delivery device being configured such that, in use, aerosol is introduced into the chamber from the aerosol generating device, wherein an air flow path is defined from the air inlet to the air outlet so as to deliver the aerosol to the air outlet, and wherein the relative sizes of the air inlet and the air outlet are selected to provide a pressure control device for controlling a pressure difference between the air inlet and the air outlet.

[0011] In use, when the system is activated, the aerosol generating device vaporizes the liquid material to form supersaturated vapor (or in the case of solid material, the aerosol generating device causes sublimation to form supersaturated vapor from the solid material), the supersaturated vapor mixes with air from at least one air inlet and condenses to form aerosol, and the aerosol is delivered to the chamber of the aerosol guide device via the aerosol delivery device. The aerosol is transported toward the air outlet of the chamber of the aerosol guide device through the suction action of the user's mouth, so that the air flow path is defined from the air inlet of the chamber to the air outlet in the direction from the upstream part of the chamber to the downstream part of the chamber.

[0012] In the present invention, the term "aerosol generating device" should be understood to mean any device that can generate aerosol. For example, the aerosol generating device may include a heater, or a heater and a core assembly, which will be described below. In another example, the aerosol generating device may include: a pressure drop control device to reduce the boiling point of a liquid or the sublimation point of a solid, for example by means of the shape of the chamber. In yet another example, the aerosol generating device may include an aerosol injection system, a nebuliser, an electrospray device and / or a vibrating hole aerosol generator (to name just a few).

[0013] In the present invention, the term "aerosol delivery device" should be understood to mean any device for achieving that the aerosol generated by the aerosol generating device is delivered to the chamber when in use. For example, the aerosol delivery device may include at least one perforation, for example, through the wall of the chamber, for receiving a core so that the aerosol is generated in (and delivered to) the chamber when in use. Additionally or alternatively, the aerosol delivery device may include: a tube for guiding the aerosol from the aerosol generating device into the chamber and toward the chamber when in use, wherein the aerosol generating device is located outside the chamber. Alternatively, the aerosol delivery device may include: a guide device for guiding the aerosol to the chamber, such as a guide member, such as a guide and / or a device for arranging the orientation of the aerosol generating device, so that, for example, a positioning device is used to guide the aerosol toward the chamber.

[0014] The aerosol generating system (which may be an electronic cigarette) according to the present invention provides a number of advantages. It is apparent that the relative size of the air inlet and the air outlet is selected to provide a pressure control device for controlling the pressure difference between the air inlet and the air outlet of the chamber of the aerosol guiding device. In particular, the relative size of the air inlet and the air outlet may also affect the air flow speed and intensity in the chamber. The relative taper of the upstream and downstream parts of the chamber may also provide a pressure control device.

[0015] The air inlet and the air outlet of the chamber may have the same size. In this case, the pressure difference between the air inlet and the air outlet may be zero.

[0016] The air inlet may have a larger size than the air outlet. In this case, there may be an overall pressure drop across the chamber of the aerosol guiding device.

[0017] The air inlet may be of smaller size than the air outlet. In this case, there may be an overall pressure increase across the chamber of the aerosol guiding device.

[0018] Preferably, the chamber of the aerosol guiding device may comprise a constriction such that an upstream portion of the chamber is defined between the air inlet and the constriction and such that a downstream portion of the chamber is defined between the constriction and the air outlet. The constriction may be the narrowest part of the chamber.

[0019] In this case, the aerosol can be introduced into the aerosol guiding device at the constriction by the aerosol delivery device, which can also be the narrowest part of the chamber, where the area of low pressure exists as a result of the vacuum effect. In some preferred examples, the aerosol is generated in the narrowest part of the chamber used. In the case of the material to be vaporized is a liquid, the area of low pressure at the narrowest part of the chamber draws the liquid in and at the same time the configuration of the narrowest part of the chamber increases the air flow velocity by the Venturi effect. In the case of a solid material to be vaporized (or sublimated), the aerosol delivery device can be configured to position the solid material close to the narrowest part of the chamber and close to the aerosol generating device, so that the solid material is vaporized (or sublimated) and sent to the narrowest part of the chamber in use, where the air flow velocity is increased by the Venturi effect.

[0020] In this example, the narrowest part of the chamber is also the location where the airflow through the aerosol guiding device is fastest. By controlling the size and configuration of the narrowest part of the chamber, both the airflow speed and the airflow direction are adjusted, and the particle size in the resulting aerosol is controlled and particularly reduced relative to known devices. Moreover, the faster the air flows in the airflow path during use, the more aerosol can be delivered to the user at each puff, thus resulting in a more efficient aerosol delivery mechanism and improving both the efficiency of the system and the smoking experience of the user.

[0021] In the case where the material to be vaporized is a liquid, the liquid can be stored in a liquid reservoir located inside or outside the chamber of the aerosol guiding device. The configuration of this liquid reservoir will be described in more detail hereinafter. The liquid to be vaporized can have a physical property suitable for use in the aerosol generating system of the present invention, for example, it can have a boiling point suitable for vaporizing the liquid at the narrowest part of the chamber. If the boiling point of the liquid is very high, the aerosol generating device will not be able to vaporize the liquid. If the boiling point of the liquid is very low, the liquid may be vaporized even before the aerosol generating device is activated.

[0022] The use of liquid material to be vaporized is particularly advantageous in combination with the delivery of aerosols at the narrowest part of the chamber. For example, the area of reduced air pressure at the narrowest position makes the boiling point of such liquids drop, thereby making the device more efficient and saving electrical energy. Therefore, the narrowest part of the chamber can become an aerosol generating device due to its shape. In addition, the reduced pressure at the narrowest part of the chamber acts to draw liquid from the reservoir towards the narrowest part of the chamber, producing better consistency of spray to spray (puff-to-puff) and ensuring that there is always enough liquid to be vaporized, which eliminates the problem of dry spray. This also increases the flow rate of the aerosol flowing through the aerosol generating system, thereby improving the user experience by increasing the amount of aerosol generated at each spray.

[0023] The liquid material preferably comprises tobacco or tobacco-containing flavors. In addition, or alternatively, the liquid material can comprise tobacco-free flavors. The liquid can also comprise glycerine (glycerine, glycerine) or ethylene glycol derivatives, or their mixtures.

[0024] Preferably, the upstream portion of the chamber and the downstream portion of the chamber may taper from the air inlet and the air outlet, respectively, towards the constriction. The taper of the chamber advantageously provides improved control of the pressure difference along the airflow path. In particular, the gradual inclination of the tapered portion reduces the drag in the chamber and thereby regulates the airflow in a controlled manner.

[0025] Preferably, the tapering angle of the upstream portion of the chamber may be greater than the tapering angle of the downstream portion of the chamber and / or the length of the upstream portion of the chamber may be smaller than the length of the downstream portion of the chamber.

[0026] Alternatively, the chamber of the aerosol guiding device may comprise an upstream portion, which tapers inwardly from the air inlet. Additionally, or alternatively, the chamber of the aerosol guiding device may comprise a downstream portion, which tapers inwardly from the air outlet.

[0027] In each example of the present invention that includes taper, the angle of taper of the upstream portion of the chamber may be between 20 and 40 degrees, more preferably between 25 and 35 degrees, and even more preferably 30 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the chamber. Additionally, the angle of taper of the downstream portion of the chamber may be between 3 and 7 degrees, more preferably between 4 and 6 degrees, and even more preferably 5 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the chamber. These particular angles of taper have been determined by the present invention to provide an optimal increase in the velocity of the airflow in the chamber while maintaining an appropriate pressure differential across the chamber of the aerosol guiding device when in use.

[0028] Typical preferred dimensions of the aerosol guide device may be a length between 14 and 15 mm, a diameter at the widest part of 10 to 15 mm and a diameter at the narrowest part of 1 to 5 mm, wherein the length of the upstream part may be between 8 and 10 mm and the length of the downstream part may be between 30 and 40 mm. In a specific example, the overall length of the aerosol guide device may be 46.5 mm, the diameter at its widest part may be 13.5 mm, the diameter at its narrowest part may be 2 mm, the length of the upstream part may be 9.25 mm and the length of the downstream part may be 37.25 mm. These particular dimensions of the aerosol guide device preferably allow it to be suitably located within the aerosol guide system so that the airflow can be adjusted and optimized through the device.

[0029] In another example, the chamber of the aerosol guiding device may include at least two constrictions. The at least two constrictions may have the same size, length and / or shape. If the at least two constrictions have the same size, then two or each of the at least two constrictions may represent the narrowest part of the chamber. Alternatively, the at least two constrictions may be of different sizes, lengths and / or shapes.

[0030] Preferably, the aerosol guiding device comprises a circular cross-sectional shape. The diameter of the circular or any other shaped cross-sectional area of the chamber, viewed in a plane normal to the cross-sectional area, may decrease or increase across the length of the chamber.

[0031] The shape of the chamber of the aerosol guiding device may provide a further pressure control means. For example, the taper of the walls of the chamber may provide a further pressure control means (in addition to that provided by the relative sizes of the air inlet and air outlet of the chamber). For example, the gradual inclination of the tapered walls of the chamber may act to reduce drag and therefore even out the pressure across a particular cross-section of the chamber.

[0032] Preferably, the pressure control means may be configured to provide a pressure differential between 75 and 110 mmWC between the air inlet and outlet of the chamber when in use. The pressure differential may preferably be a pressure drop. This range of pressure drop across the chamber is the pressure drop across the length of a conventional cigarette.

[0033] The aerosol guiding device preferably comprises a heat insulating material, such as plastic. Of course, other heat insulating materials may be considered, particularly depending on the properties of the aerosol to be generated by the aerosol generating device, and such materials are known to those skilled in the art. An advantage of such a material is that heat losses in the aerosol guiding device are reduced so that the thermal efficiency of the aerosol generating system can be improved. This is particularly important when the aerosol generating device comprises a heater.

[0034] The interior of the chamber of the aerosol guiding device may be ribbed.Such a configuration may advantageously reduce the amount of sheath flow of air along the walls of the chamber, thereby improving the efficiency of the system.

[0035] The chamber of the aerosol guiding device may preferably be manufactured using 3D printing techniques. The chamber may also preferably comprise a single body element, which acts to reduce variability between components. The use of a single element also avoids the need to assemble multiple components, thereby increasing the ease of use of the device. This is particularly advantageous where, for example, the chamber is defective or has reached the end of its useful life and is no longer functional, as the invention enables it to be quickly and easily replaced.

[0036] The various positions of the aerosol guiding device in the aerosol generating system can be considered. In one example, the aerosol generating system can also include a housing to accommodate the chamber of the aerosol guiding device. The housing can be configured to receive the aerosol guiding device, which can be inserted into the aerosol generating system and can be removed from the aerosol generating system. The special advantage that this provides is that different aerosol guiding devices can be arranged for the aerosol generating system according to a variety of operating factors. The advantage of the insertable and removable nature of the aerosol guiding device is that if the operating environment of the aerosol generating system changes over time, the device may be changed. The aerosol guiding device can also include a fixture (e.g., an O-ring), which fixes the aerosol guiding device to the housing of the aerosol generating system, which prevents the aerosol guiding device from moving unexpectedly in the aerosol generating system when in use. The aerosol guiding device can also provide structural integrity to the aerosol generating system.

[0037] Preferably, the aerosol generating device of the aerosol generating system can be located outside the aerosol guiding device and / or near the narrowest part of the chamber. Alternatively, the aerosol generating device of the aerosol generating system can be located inside the aerosol guiding device. The advantage of the aerosol generating device being located outside the aerosol guiding device is that it will not affect or change the airflow in the chamber of the aerosol guiding device. However, if the aerosol generating device is located inside the aerosol guiding device, it can be constructed to further adjust the airflow in the airflow path by acting as a guide around which air must flow. In this example, the aerosol generating device can also act as a capture component in order to capture aerosol particles, wherein the above-mentioned aerosol particles have a diameter greater than about 1.0 microns. This not only removes the aerosol particles that may not reach the user in any way, but also acts to provide better uniformity by removing the aerosol particles.

[0038] Preferably, the aerosol generating device may include a heater, wherein the heater includes any one of a ceramic heating device, an acoil of wire heating device, an induction heating device, an ultrasonic heating device and / or a piezoelectric heating device.

[0039] Preferably, the aerosol generating device may further comprise a core received by the chamber of the aerosol guiding device, and the core may be in communication with the reservoir. The aerosol generating system may further comprise said reservoir. The core may be received by the chamber at the narrowest part through at least one perforation.

[0040] In one example, the aerosol generating device may further comprise a core received by the chamber of the aerosol guiding device at its narrowest part through at least one perforation, and the core may be in communication with the reservoir. In this example, the aerosol generating device may comprise a coil heater located at or substantially at the narrowest part of the chamber. The core may draw liquid to be vaporized from at least one reservoir, for example located outside the chamber of the aerosol guiding device.

[0041] From another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an aerosol guiding device for use in an aerosol generating system, the device comprising: a chamber having an air inlet and an air outlet; wherein aerosol is introduced into the chamber from the aerosol generating device in use, wherein the air flow path is defined from the air inlet to the air outlet so as to deliver the aerosol to the air outlet, and wherein the relative sizes of the air inlet and the air outlet are selected to provide a pressure control device for controlling the pressure difference between the air inlet and the air outlet. The aerosol generating system may be an electronic cigarette.

[0042] It will be appreciated that all features and advantages described above in relation to the aerosol guiding device of the aerosol generating system may also apply to the aerosol guiding device alone.

[0043] The air inlet and the air outlet of the chamber may have the same size. In this case, the pressure difference between the air inlet and the air outlet may be zero.

[0044] The air inlet may have a larger size than the air outlet. In this case, there may be an overall pressure drop across the chamber of the aerosol guiding device.

[0045] The air inlet may have a smaller size than the air outlet. In this case, there may be an overall pressure increase across the chamber of the aerosol guiding device.

[0046] Preferably, the chamber of the aerosol guiding device may comprise a constriction such that an upstream portion of the chamber is defined between the air inlet and the constriction and such that a downstream portion of the chamber is defined between the constriction and the air outlet. The constriction may be the narrowest part of the chamber.

[0047] Preferably, the upstream portion of the chamber and the downstream portion of the chamber may taper from the air inlet and the air outlet, respectively, towards the constriction. The taper of the chamber advantageously provides improved control of the pressure difference along the airflow path. In particular, the gradual inclination of the tapered portion reduces the resistance in the chamber and thereby regulates the airflow in a controlled manner.

[0048] Preferably, the tapering angle of the upstream portion of the chamber may be greater than the tapering angle of the downstream portion of the chamber and / or the length of the upstream portion of the chamber may be smaller than the length of the downstream portion of the chamber.

[0049] Alternatively, the chamber of the aerosol guiding device may comprise an upstream portion, which tapers inwardly from the air inlet. Additionally, or alternatively, the chamber of the aerosol guiding device may comprise a downstream portion, which tapers inwardly from the air outlet.

[0050] In each example of the present invention that includes taper, the angle of taper of the upstream portion of the chamber may be between 20 and 40 degrees, more preferably between 25 and 35 degrees, and even more preferably 30 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the chamber.

[0051] Typical preferred dimensions of the aerosol guide device may be a length between 14 and 15 mm, a diameter at the widest part of 10 to 15 mm and a diameter at the narrowest part of 1 to 5 mm, wherein the length of the upstream part may be between 8 and 10 mm, and the length of the downstream part may be between 30 and 40 mm. In a specific example, the overall length of the aerosol guide device may be 46.5 mm, the diameter at its widest part may be 13.5 mm, the diameter at its narrowest part may be 2 mm, the length of the upstream part may be 9.25 mm, and the length of the downstream part may be 37.25 mm. These specific dimensions of the aerosol guide device preferably allow it to be suitably located within the aerosol guide system so that the airflow can be regulated and optimized through the device.

[0052] In another example, the chamber of the aerosol guiding device may include at least two constrictions. The at least two constrictions may have the same size, length and / or shape. The at least two constrictions have the same size, so two or each of the at least two constrictions may represent the narrowest part of the chamber. Alternatively, the at least two constrictions may be of different sizes, lengths and / or shapes.

[0053] Preferably, the aerosol guiding device comprises a circular cross-sectional shape. The diameter of the circular or any other shaped cross-sectional area of the chamber, viewed in a plane normal to the cross-sectional area, may decrease or increase across the length of the chamber.

[0054] The shape of the chamber of the aerosol guiding device may provide a further pressure control means.

[0055] Preferably, the pressure control means may be configured to provide a pressure differential between 75 and 110 mmWC between the air inlet and outlet of the chamber when in use. The pressure differential may preferably be a pressure drop. This range of pressure drop across the chamber is the pressure drop across the length of a conventional cigarette.

[0056] The aerosol guiding device preferably comprises a heat insulating material, such as plastic.

[0057] The interior of the chamber of the aerosol guiding device may be ribbed. Such a configuration may advantageously reduce the sheath flow of air along the walls of the chamber, thereby improving the efficiency of the system.

[0058] The chamber of the aerosol guiding device may preferably be manufactured using 3D printing techniques.

[0059] Preferably, the aerosol guiding device can be inserted into the aerosol generating system and can be removed from the aerosol generating system. The special advantage provided by this is that different aerosol guiding devices can be arranged for the aerosol generating system according to a variety of operating factors. The advantage of the insertable and removable nature of the aerosol guiding device is that if the operating environment of the aerosol generating system changes over time, the device may be changed. The aerosol guiding device may also include a fixing device (e.g., an O-ring) that fixes it to the housing of the aerosol generating system, which prevents the aerosol guiding device from moving unexpectedly in the aerosol generating system when in use. The aerosol guiding device can also provide structural integrity to the aerosol generating system. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0060] Certain preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

[0061] Figures 1A to 1CA schematic diagram showing an aerosol guiding device according to an embodiment of the present invention;

[0062] FIG. 2A to FIG. 2C A schematic diagram showing an aerosol guiding device according to another embodiment of the present invention; FIG. 3A to FIG. 3C A schematic diagram showing an aerosol generating system according to an embodiment of the present invention; and

[0063] FIG. 4A to FIG. 4C A schematic diagram showing an aerosol generating system according to another embodiment of the present invention is shown. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0064] Fig. 1 shows an example of an aerosol guiding device 1 according to the invention. Figure 1A A schematic diagram showing such an aerosol guiding device 1 is shown, Figure 1B A side view showing an aerosol guiding device 1 and Figure 1C An end view of an aerosol guiding device 1 is shown. Figures 1A to 1C In each of the figures, it can be seen that the aerosol guiding device 1 comprises an air inlet 11 and an air outlet 12 of a chamber 10. The aerosol delivery device of the aerosol generating system can be configured such that, when in use, the aerosol is introduced into the chamber 10 from the aerosol generating device of the aerosol generating system, and an air flow path is defined from the air inlet 11 to the air outlet 12 so as to deliver the aerosol to the air outlet 12.

[0065] It will be appreciated that any description of the dimensions of a chamber of the aerosol guiding device in the examples of any of the figures, such as the dimensions of the "narrowest part", "constriction", "cross-sectional area", "air inlet" and "air outlet", are made with reference to the internal dimensions of the chamber.

[0066] 1 , the relative sizes of the air inlet 11 and the air outlet 12 (as well as the relative tapers of the upstream and downstream portions 14, 15 of the chamber 10) may be selected to provide a pressure control arrangement for controlling the pressure differential between the air inlet 11 and the air outlet 12 of the chamber 10 of the aerosol guiding device 1. In particular, the relative sizes of the air inlet 11 and the air outlet 12 may also affect the air flow velocity and strength within the chamber 10.

[0067] Figure 1B The air inlet 11 and the air outlet 12 shown in FIG. 1 have the same size. In this case, the pressure difference between the air inlet and the air outlet is substantially zero. The pressure control means may also be provided by the shape of the chamber 10 of the aerosol guiding device 1. Figure 1B, a chamber 10 is shown, which includes a contraction 13 of the chamber 10, which is also the narrowest portion 13 of the chamber 10. An upstream portion 14 of the chamber 10 is defined between the air inlet 11 and the contraction 13, and a downstream portion 15 of the chamber 10 is defined between the contraction 13 and the air outlet 12. Between the air inlet 11 and the narrowest portion 13, the size of the cross-sectional area of the chamber 10 decreases, so there is a pressure drop therebetween. Between the narrowest portion 13 and the air outlet 12, the size of the cross-sectional area of the chamber 10 increases, so there is a pressure increase therebetween. Therefore, there is an area of low pressure at the narrowest portion 13. In addition, as Figure 1B The tapering of the walls of the chamber 10 shown provides a pressure control means, through the gradual inclination of the tapered walls, which acts to reduce drag and therefore even out pressure across a particular cross-section of the chamber 10. In use, the pressure drop across the air inlet 11 and the narrowest portion 13 of the chamber 10 of the aerosol guiding device 1 may preferably be between 75 and 110 mmWC, which is the range of pressure drop across the length of a conventional cigarette.

[0068] In alternative embodiments, the air inlet 11 and the air outlet 12 may alternatively have different sizes, the effect of which will be described below with reference to FIG. 4 .

[0069] According to the Venturi effect, the narrowest part 13 of the chamber 10 is the point at which the airflow flows fastest through the aerosol guiding device 1. By controlling the size and configuration of the narrowest part 13 of the chamber 10, both the airflow speed and the airflow direction can be adjusted, and the particle size of the resulting aerosol can be more accurately controlled and in particular reduced relative to known devices. Moreover, the faster the airflow in the airflow path during use, the more aerosol can be delivered to the user, thereby resulting in a more efficient aerosol delivery mechanism and simultaneously improving the efficiency of the aerosol generating system into which the aerosol guiding device 1 can be inserted and the smoking experience of the user.

[0070] like Figure 1B As shown, the upstream portion 14 and the downstream portion 15 of the chamber 10 are each tapered inwardly from the air inlet 11 and the air outlet 12, respectively, toward the narrowest portion or constriction 13 of the chamber 10. The tapering of the chamber 10 advantageously provides improved control of the pressure differential along the airflow path. In particular, the gradual inclination of the tapered portion reduces the resistance in the chamber 10 and thereby regulates the airflow in a controlled manner.

[0071] Figure 1B The tapering angle of the upstream portion 14 of the chamber 10 is shown as being greater than the tapering angle of the downstream portion 15 of the chamber 10. The length of the upstream portion 14 is also shown as being less than the length of the downstream portion 15 of the chamber 10. Therefore, in use, air entering the aerosol guiding device 1 will accelerate from the air inlet 11 towards the narrowest portion or constriction 13, and then gradually decelerate from the narrowest portion or constriction 13 towards the air outlet 12, and the airflow will be fastest at the narrowest portion or constriction 13.

[0072] exist Figure 1B In FIG. 1 , the taper angle θ of the upstream portion 14 is 30 degrees and the taper angle φ of the downstream portion 15 is 5 degrees. The taper angles have been determined to provide an optimum increase in air flow velocity at the narrowest part or constriction 13 in the chamber 10 to produce an appropriate pressure differential across the chamber 10 of the aerosol guiding device 1 when in use. Figure 1B In the example shown, the aerosol guiding device 1 is 46.5 mm long, has a diameter at its widest part of 13.5 mm and a diameter at its narrowest part of 2 mm, the length of the upstream portion 14 is 9.25 mm and the length of the downstream portion 15 is 37.25 mm.

[0073] like Figure 1C As shown, the aerosol guiding device 1 comprises a circular cross-sectional shape. Figure 1B As shown, the cross-sectional shape of aerosol guiding device 1 decreases from air inlet 11 to narrowest portion or constriction 13 and then increases from narrowest portion or constriction 13 to air outlet 12. The cross-sectional shapes of air inlet 11 and air outlet 12 are substantially the same so that the pressure difference therebetween is substantially zero.

[0074] The aerosol guiding device 1 shown in FIG. 1 can be made, for example, of a plastic material, which is heat insulating. Other suitable heat insulating materials can be used and are known to those skilled in the art. The advantage is that when the aerosol guiding device 1 is inserted into an aerosol generating system, the system can have a better thermal efficiency because heat losses are reduced. This is particularly important if the aerosol generating device comprises a heater.

[0075] Although not shown in Figure 1, the interior of the chamber 10 of the aerosol guiding device 1 may be ribbed. Such a configuration may advantageously reduce the sheath flow of air along the walls of the chamber, thereby improving the efficiency of the system.

[0076] The chamber 10 of the aerosol guiding device 1 of Figure 1 can be manufactured using 3D printing technology. This technology can be used to manufacture a chamber 10 comprising a single body element as shown in Figure 1, which acts to reduce variability between components. The use of a single element also avoids the need to assemble multiple parts, thereby increasing the ease of use of the aerosol guiding device 1.

[0077] FIG. 2A to FIG. 2CAnother embodiment of the aerosol guiding device 2 of the present invention is shown. The aerosol guiding device 2 comprises a chamber 20 having an air inlet 21 and an air outlet 22. The aerosol delivery device of the aerosol generating system may be configured so that the aerosol is introduced into the chamber 10 from the aerosol generating device of the aerosol generating system when in use, and the air flow path is defined from the air inlet 21 to the air outlet 22 so as to deliver the aerosol to the air outlet 22. The relative sizes of the air inlet 21 and the air outlet 22 (as well as the relative taper of the upstream portion 26 and the downstream portion 27 of the chamber 20) may be selected to provide a pressure control device for controlling the pressure difference between the air inlet 21 and the air outlet 122 of the chamber 20 of the aerosol guiding device 2. In particular, the relative sizes of the air inlet 21 and the air outlet 22 may also affect the air flow speed and intensity within the chamber 20.

[0078] Figure 2B The air inlet 21 and the air outlet 22 shown in FIG. 2 are of the same size. In this case, the pressure difference between the air inlet and the air outlet is substantially zero. The pressure control means may also be provided by the shape of the chamber 10 of the aerosol guiding device 2. Figure 2B 2 shows a chamber 20 comprising a constriction 23 of the chamber 20, which is also the narrowest part 23 of the chamber 20. The narrowest part or constriction 23 of the aerosol guiding device 2 is shown between an upstream part 26 and a downstream part 27 of the chamber 20.

[0079] Between the inlet 21 and the narrowest portion 23, the size of the cross-sectional area of the chamber 10 decreases, so there is a pressure drop therebetween. Between the narrowest portion 23 and the outlet 22, the size of the cross-sectional area of the chamber 20 increases, so there is a pressure increase therebetween. Therefore, there is a low pressure area at the narrowest portion 23. In addition, as Figure 2B The tapering of the walls of chamber 20 shown provides a pressure control means through the gradual inclination of the tapered walls which acts to reduce drag and therefore even out pressure across a particular cross-section of chamber 20. In use, the pressure drop across the air inlet 21 and the narrowest portion 23 of chamber 20 of the aerosol guiding device 2 may preferably be between 75 and 110 mmWC, which is the range of pressure drop across the length of a conventional cigarette.

[0080] All features described with reference to Figure 1 and the configuration of said features can also be applied to the embodiment shown in Figure 2 equally.Relative to the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the embodiment shown in Figure 2 also includes a perforation 24 at the narrowest part 23 of the chamber 2, through which a capillary wick 25 is received. In this embodiment, the capillary wick 25 forms a part of an aerosol generating device, and the perforation 24 forms an aerosol delivery device. The capillary wick 25 can be connected with a reservoir (not shown), which is located at the outside or inside of the chamber 20.

[0081] In use, when the system including the aerosol guide device 2 is activated, the aerosol generating device vaporizes the liquid material to form a vapor with a maximum saturation, wherein the aerosol generating device may also include a heater (not shown). The vapor with a maximum saturation is mixed with air from at least one air inlet of the system and condenses to form an aerosol, which is delivered to the narrowest part 23 of the chamber 20 of the aerosol guide device 2 via the capillary wick 25 through the perforation 24. The aerosol is transported to the air outlet 22 of the chamber 20 of the aerosol guide device 2 through the suction action of the user's mouth, so that the air flow path is defined from the air inlet 21 to the air outlet 22 in the direction from the upstream part 26 to the downstream part 27 of the chamber 20.

[0082] refer to Figure 2B , a low pressure area is formed at the narrowest portion 23 of the chamber 20, so that the liquid material is sucked from the reservoir (not shown). At the same time, the low pressure area at the narrowest portion 23 of the chamber 20 causes the velocity of the air flow to increase by the Venturi effect, so that the air flow at the narrowest portion 23 of the chamber 20 is faster than the air flow upstream and downstream of the narrowest portion 23.

[0083] The liquid to be vaporized may have physical properties suitable for use in an aerosol generating system, for example, it may have a boiling point suitable for vaporizing the liquid at the narrowest portion 23 of the chamber 20. If the boiling point of the liquid is very high, the aerosol generating device will not be able to vaporize the liquid. If the boiling point of the liquid is very low, the liquid may be vaporized even before the aerosol generating device is activated.

[0084] The use of liquid material to be vaporized is combined with the delivery of aerosol at the narrowest part 23 of the chamber 20 to achieve special advantages. For example, the area of reduced air pressure at the narrowest point 23 makes the boiling point of such liquid drop, thereby making the aerosol guiding device 2 more efficient and saving power. Therefore, the narrowest part 23 of the chamber 20 can become an aerosol generating device 2 due to its shape. In addition, the reduced pressure at the narrowest part 23 of the chamber 20 can act to draw liquid from a reservoir (not shown) via the core 25 toward the narrowest part 23 of the chamber 20, resulting in better consistency of spray to spray and ensuring that there is always enough liquid to be vaporized, which eliminates the problem of dry spray. This also increases the flow rate of the aerosol flowing through the aerosol generating system 2 when in use, which will enhance the user experience by increasing the amount of aerosol generated at each spray. This also produces better control of the particle size of the aerosol droplets present in the vaporized liquid, and control of the spatial distribution of the aerosol particles.

[0085] The liquid material comprises tobacco or tobacco-containing flavors. In addition, or alternatively, the liquid material can comprise tobacco-free flavors. The liquid to be vaporized can also comprise glycerine or ethylene glycol derivatives, or mixtures thereof.

[0086] The aerosol generating device (not shown) may include a heater (not shown), wherein the heater includes any one of ceramic, a coil, an induction heating device, an ultrasonic heating device and / or a piezoelectric heating device.

[0087] The aerosol generating device (not shown) further comprises a core 25 received by the chamber 20 of the aerosol guiding device 2 at the narrowest part 23 of the chamber through at least one perforation 24, and the core 25 is in communication with a reservoir (not shown). The aerosol generating system 2 may further comprise said reservoir (not shown). In this example, the aerosol generating device (not shown) may preferably comprise a coil heater, which is located at or substantially at the narrowest part 23 of the chamber 20. The core 25 may draw liquid to be vaporized from at least one reservoir (not shown) located, for example, outside the chamber 20 of the aerosol guiding device.

[0088] Reference now FIG. 3A to FIG. 3C , showing the aerosol generating system 3. Figure 3A A schematic diagram and an exploded view of the aerosol generating system 3 are shown. Figure 3B A side view of the aerosol generating device 3 is shown. Figure 3C A side view of an aerosol generating device 3 is shown in a plane passing through the center of the system, wherein the system comprises an aerosol generating device (not shown), an aerosol delivery device (not shown) and an aerosol guiding device 30, wherein the aerosol guiding device 30 comprises a chamber 31 having an air inlet 32 and an air outlet 33.

[0089] The aerosol delivery device (not shown) is configured so that the aerosol is introduced into the chamber 31 from the aerosol generating device at its narrowest part 34 when in use, and the air flow path is defined from the air inlet 32 to the air outlet 33 so as to deliver the aerosol to the air outlet 33. The aerosol generating system 3 also includes a housing 37 and a mouthpiece 38. The aerosol guiding device 30 can be any of the embodiments shown in Figures 1 or 2, and has the same pressure control device to control the pressure difference between the air inlet and the air outlet, or the aerosol guiding device 30 can also be any other suitable aerosol guiding device.

[0090] Preferably, the aerosol generating device (not shown) may include a core (not shown) which is received by the chamber 31 of the aerosol guiding device 30 at the narrowest part 34 of the chamber through at least one perforation (not shown), and the core (not shown) may be in communication with a reservoir (not shown). The aerosol generating device (not shown) may include a coil heater located at or substantially at the narrowest part 34 of the chamber 31. The core (not shown) may draw liquid to be vaporized from at least one reservoir (not shown) located, for example, outside the chamber 31 of the aerosol guiding device 30.

[0091] The housing 37 of the aerosol generating system 3 accommodates the chamber 31 of the aerosol guiding device 30 when in use. The housing 37 is configured to receive the aerosol guiding device 30, which can be inserted into the aerosol generating system 3 and can be removed from the aerosol generating system 3. The specific advantage provided by this is that different aerosol guiding devices can be provided for the aerosol generating system 3 according to a variety of operating factors. The advantage of the removable nature of the aerosol guiding device is also that if the operating environment of the aerosol generating system 3 changes over time or the aerosol guiding device reaches the end of its service life, the device can be changed. The aerosol guiding device can also include a fixing device (e.g., an O-ring) that fixes it to the housing 37 of the aerosol generating system 3, which prevents the aerosol guiding device from moving unexpectedly in the aerosol generating system 3 when in use. The aerosol guiding device 30 can also provide structural integrity to the aerosol generating system 3.

[0092] FIG. 4A to FIG. 4C An alternative embodiment of an aerosol guiding device 40a, 50a, 60a is shown in an aerosol generating system 4, 5, 6. Each aerosol generating system 4, 5, 6 comprises a housing 44, 54, 64 and a mouthpiece 45, 55, 65.

[0093] exist Figure 4A In the embodiment, the chamber 40b of the aerosol guiding device 40a has an air inlet 41, which has a larger size than the air outlet 42. Through the Venturi effect, the air is accelerated from the air inlet 41 toward the air outlet 42, which is also the narrowest part 43 of the chamber 40b. The air can then decelerate after leaving from the air outlet 42. Figure 4A It can be seen that the aerosol generating device 46 comprises a liquid reservoir 47, a core 48 and a coil heater 49. In use, one end of the core is in communication with the liquid in the liquid reservoir 47, and the heater 49 heats the other end of the core 48. The core 48 also acts as an aerosol delivery device, with the aerosol being generated by the aerosol generating device 46 near the coil heater 49 so that the aerosol is guided to the chamber 40b of the aerosol guiding device 40a at the narrowest portion 43 of the chamber.

[0094] The aerosol generating device 46 is Figure 4A 4 is shown in chamber 40b of aerosol guide device 40a. Aerosol generating device 46 is also near the narrowest portion 43 of chamber 40b. Aerosol generating device 46 can act to further regulate the airflow in the airflow path by acting as a guide around which the air must flow. In this example, the aerosol generating device can also act as a capture component for capturing larger aerosol particles, wherein the above-mentioned larger aerosol particles have a diameter greater than about 1.0 microns. This not only removes larger aerosol particles that may not reach the user's lungs, but also acts to provide better uniformity by removing the larger aerosol particles.

[0095] exist Figure 4B In the embodiment, the chamber 50b of the aerosol guiding device 50a has an air inlet 51, which has a smaller size than the air outlet 52. By the Venturi effect, the air is accelerated when it enters the air inlet 51 (the air inlet is also the narrowest part 53 of the chamber 50b), and decelerated from the air inlet 51 toward the air outlet 52. Figure 4B It can be seen that the aerosol generating device 56 comprises a liquid reservoir 57, a core 58 and a coil heater 59. In use, one end of the core is in communication with the liquid in the liquid reservoir 57, and the heater 59 heats the other end of the core 58. The core 58 also acts as an aerosol delivery device, and the aerosol is generated by the aerosol generating device 56 near the coil heater 59 so that the aerosol is guided to the chamber 50b of the aerosol guiding device 50a at the narrowest part 53 of the chamber.

[0096] The aerosol generating device 56 of the aerosol generating system 5 is shown located inside the aerosol guiding device 50a. An advantage of the aerosol generating device 56 being located outside the aerosol guiding device 50a is that it will not affect or alter the airflow in the chamber 50b of the aerosol guiding device 50a.

[0097] It should be understood that although Figure 4A and Figure 4B The aerosol guiding device 40a, 50a shown in Figure 4 does not extend the full length of the housing 44, 54 of the aerosol generating system 4, 5, but other embodiments of the invention may include an aerosol guiding device having the same general appearance as the aerosol guiding device 40a, 50a, which extends the full length of the housing of the aerosol generating system.

[0098] Figure 4C An aerosol guiding device 60a is shown, which may be Figure 4A and Figure 4B Alternatively, the aerosol guiding device 60a may be manufactured from a single component and not have two separate parts. An advantage of having an aerosol guiding device 60a having a single component is that variability between parts can be reduced during the manufacturing process. Alternatively, the aerosol guiding device 60a may be manufactured from two separate parts (e.g., one in each case). Figure 4A and Figure 4B The aerosol guiding device 40a, 50a) shown in FIG.

[0099] exist Figure 4CIn the embodiment, the chamber 60b of the aerosol guiding device 60a has an air inlet 61, which has the same size as the air outlet 62. Therefore, the total pressure difference between the air inlet 61 and the air outlet 62 is zero. Between the air inlet 61 and the narrowest part 63, the size of the cross-sectional area of the chamber 60b decreases, so there is a pressure drop therebetween. Between the narrowest part 63 and the air outlet 62, the size of the cross-sectional area of the chamber 60b increases, so there is a pressure increase therebetween. There is a low pressure area at the narrowest part 63. In addition, as shown in FIG. Figure 4C The tapering of the walls of chamber 60b shown provides a pressure control means through the gradual inclination of the tapered walls which acts to reduce drag and therefore even out pressure across a particular cross-section of chamber 60b. In use, the pressure drop across air inlet 61 and narrowest portion 63 of chamber 60b of aerosol guiding device 60a may preferably be between 75 and 110 mmWC, which is the range of pressure drop across the length of a conventional cigarette.

[0100] By the Venturi effect, the air is accelerated from the air inlet 61 toward the narrowest portion 63 of the chamber 60b, and then decelerated from the air inlet 61 toward the air outlet 62. Figure 4C It can be seen that the aerosol generating device 66 comprises a liquid reservoir 67, a core 68 and a coil heater 69. In use, one end of the core is in communication with the liquid in the liquid reservoir 67, and the heater 69 heats the other end of the core 68. The core 68 also acts as an aerosol delivery device, and the aerosol is generated by the aerosol generating device 66 near the coil heater 69 so that the aerosol is guided to the chamber 60b of the aerosol guiding device 60a at the narrowest part 63 of the chamber.

[0101] exist FIG. 4A to FIG. 4C In the embodiment, each aerosol generating system 4, 5, 6 further comprises a core 48, 58, 68 and a coil heater 49, 59, 69, which is shown close to the narrowest portion 43, 53, 63 of the chamber 40b, 50b, 60b. In another example, the core 48, 58, 68 and the coil heater 49, 59, 69 may also extend towards the narrowest portion 43, 53, 63 and / or may extend to a position within the narrowest portion 43, 53, 63. The latter arrangement provides an advantageous effect of introducing aerosol into the chamber 40b, 50b, 60b due to the low pressure area formed at the narrowest portion 43, 53, 63 by means of the Venturi effect. The low pressure area acts to draw liquid particularly efficiently towards the core 48, 58, 68 and coil heater 49, 59, 69, thereby creating more liquid to be vaporised at the end of the core 48, 58, 68 so that more aerosol can be delivered to the user with each spray.

[0102] exist FIG. 4A to FIG. 4C In each of the Figures, the gradual inclination of the tapered portion reduces the resistance in the chamber and thereby regulates the airflow in a controlled manner.

[0103] It should be understood that the features described above in relation to one embodiment of the present invention may also be applied to any other embodiment, if desired. FIG. 4A to FIG. 4C The aerosol guiding devices 40a, 50a, 60a can be respectively FIG. 3A to FIG. 3C The housing 37 of the aerosol generating system 3 is removed and inserted therein.
