Abstract
Description
Background Art
[0001] The present disclosure relates to computing devices and, more particularly, to systems and methods for automatic profile switching by computing devices.
[0002] User profiles can provide customized experiences for users on a domain or website based on stored settings (such as browsing settings, bookmarks, or saved passwords). For example, when a user visits a website, the website can request user profile information (e.g., username and password). Once the user profile information is entered, the browser can save the user profile information, and the website can store browsing information (e.g., cookies) related to the user profile information. In this example, the website can remember the products viewed by the user to provide recommendations to the user during the current visit or the next visit to the website. Typically, users do not provide any user profile information when visiting a website, or the browser automatically provides the website with the user profile information entered during a previous visit to the website. However, in some cases, the browser can provide user profile information to the website, but the user may prefer to use an alternative user profile associated with the website.
[0003] Therefore, there is a need in the art for improvements in user profile switching. Summary of the invention

[0015] The present disclosure provides systems and methods for automatic user profile switching by a computing device. In an example, the systems and methods disclosed herein can allow a computing device to switch user profiles based on user profile information, the user profile information including one or more of user preferences, past use of the user profile, favorites settings, domain names, subdomains, query parameters of a uniform resource locator (URL), or administrative settings.
[0016] For example, a browser may support multiple user profiles, such as @microsoft.com or @outlook.com. When a user visits a website for personal reasons (e.g., an online shopping site), the user may want to use a user profile under @outlook.com, and when a user visits a website for business reasons (e.g., sharepoint.microsoft.com), the user may want to use a user profile under @microsoft.com. In another example, when a user clicks on a link sent in an email, a browser may start, but the browser does not know which account or user profile the user wants to use. If the URL associated with the link is work-related, a work-related user profile would be ideal, and if the URL is social, a personal-related user profile would be ideal. According to various aspects of the present disclosure, a browser may switch user profiles based on user profile information. In addition, when a user manually switches a user profile, the browser may be configured to prompt the user to provide an indication of whether the switch is a permanent switch, and record the indication accordingly.
[0017] Turning now to the drawings, examples of systems and methods for automatic user profile switching by a computing device are depicted. It should be understood that various aspects of the drawings may not be drawn to scale but are drawn for illustrative purposes.
[0018] Reference Figure 1 , depicts a conceptual view of an example user interface 100 for a computing device. Examples of computing devices may include a cellular phone, a smart phone, a laptop computer, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a multimedia device, a video device, a digital audio player (e.g., an MP3 player), a camera, a game console, a tablet computer, a smart device, a wearable device, a large or small kitchen appliance, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, or any other similarly functional device capable of displaying the user interface 100.
[0019] As shown, the user interface 100 may display a first application 110 (e.g., an email application) for interacting with a user. In an example, the content 112 of the first application 110 may display a link 114 for the user to access a website (e.g., www.businesssite.com). In response to the link 114 being selected by the user, the user interface 100 may switch to a browser 120 to display the content 124 of a website 122 corresponding to the link 114.
[0020] In some cases, browser 120 may determine whether website 122 was accessed under first user profile 126 (e.g., profile 1) during a previous visit to website 122, and reuse the first user profile from the previous visit to website 122. In other words, a profile manager for browser 120 typically maintains user profile information including website 122 and credentials (e.g., username and password) associated with (or used during) the last visit to website 122. However, in some examples, a user may want website 122 to be displayed under a different user profile (e.g., profile 2) than the last user profile used to access website 122.
[0021] Aspects of the present disclosure describe a profile manager for browser 120 that allows browser 120 to switch user profiles based on one or more of a password list, a user profile history, an administrative setting, or a profile favorites setting. In some examples, the profile manager of browser 120 may also use domain names, subdomain names, and / or query parameters when determining which user profile to use.
[0022] refer to Figure 2 , depicts a conceptual view of an example computing device 200 for profile switching. In one aspect, the computing device 200 may include a profile manager 210 configured to manage a plurality of user profiles 222 and to select a user profile from the plurality of user profiles 222 to launch a website in the browser 120.
[0023] In one aspect, profile manager 210 can communicate with originating application 204 to receive a request (e.g., link 114) to access a website (e.g., website 122), and can provide information to browser 120 for the website to be launched under the selected user profile based on user profile information 220. In an example, originating application 204 can be any application installed on computing device 200 (e.g., first application 110 or browser 120) or any online application accessed by computing device 200 (e.g., an online email application).
[0024] In an example, profile manager 210 may include URL component manager 212 configured to receive a request from originating application 204 and determine URL component data 240 corresponding to a URL associated with the request. For example, URL component manager 212 may determine URL component data 240 by parsing a domain name, subdomain name, path, and / or query parameters from a URL associated with the request (e.g., www.businesssite.com).
[0025] In one aspect, profile manager 210 may further include profile determiner 214 configured to determine a first user profile corresponding to a domain name from among a plurality of user profiles 222 based on user profile information 220. In an example, profile determiner 214 may receive user profile information 220 from memory 216.
[0026] In one aspect, user profile information 220 may include user profile 222, credential data 224, profile history data 226, profile favorites data 228, or administrative settings data 230. In one example, user profile 222 may include data indicative of a user profile, such as a profile name or profile identifier corresponding to a website.
[0027] In an example, credential data 224 may include data indicating credential information that corresponds to user profile 222 and is used for the visited website. For example, credential data 224 may include a username and / or password corresponding to user profile 222 and the website.
[0028] In an example, the profile history data 226 may include data indicating historical visit information of the user profile 222 when visiting a website. For example, the profile history data 226 may include the number of visits that the user profile 222 has made to the website, the duration of these visits to the website, and / or the schedule of these visits to the website (e.g., time of day, day of the week).
[0029] In an example, the profile favorites data 228 may include data indicating favorites settings (e.g., as indicated by the user) corresponding to the user profile 222 and the website. For example, the profile favorites data 228 may indicate that the user has selected a user profile to be used when accessing the corresponding website.
[0030] Administrative settings data 230 may include data indicating settings (or restrictions) corresponding to user profiles 222 and websites. In some examples, administrative settings data 230 may allow or restrict websites to be launched under user profiles, such as restrictions on personal profiles of commercial intranet websites.
[0031] In an example, to determine the first user profile, the profile determiner 214 may examine the user profile information 220 and the URL component data 240 and determine one or more user profiles 222 corresponding to the domain name of the requested URL. When a single user profile is determined to correspond to the domain name of the requested URL, the profile determiner 214 may determine whether to open the URL under the single user profile 222 based on the user profile information 220. For example, the profile determiner 214 may verify that the management settings data 230 allows the single user profile 222 to be used when launching the website.
[0032] When multiple user profiles 222 correspond to the domain name of the requested URL, the profile determiner 214 can determine which user profile of the multiple user profiles 222 is provided to the browser 120 to launch the website. In an example, the profile determiner 214 can view the profile history data 226, the profile favorites data 228, and the management settings data 230 to determine whether a user profile 222 should be selected over another user profile 222. For example, the data of the user profile information 220 can be weighted so that some data is weighted relative to other data. In some examples, the user profile information 220 can be weighted based on the order of the descending order of the weight, such as the management settings data 230 can have a greater weight than the profile favorites data 228, and the profile favorites data 228 can have a greater weight than the profile history data 226.
[0033] Additionally, the profile determiner 214 can review the URL component data 240 to further determine one of the plurality of user profiles 222 to provide to the browser 120. For example, the URL component data 240 can be compared to the credential data 224, the profile history data 226, the profile favorites data 228, and / or the administrative settings data 230 to determine whether the URL component data 240 (e.g., a subdomain name or a query parameter) indicates which of the plurality of user profiles 222 to provide to the browser 120.
[0034] Once the user profile 222 has been determined (or selected), the profile determiner 214 may send the determined user profile 222 to the browser 120 to launch the website under the determined user profile 222. In an example, if the current browser window is open, the browser 120 may use the current browser window to launch the website under the determined user profile 222. In another example, if there are more than one browser windows open, the browser 120 may use the most recently used browser window to launch the website under the determined user profile 222. In another example, if no browser window is open, the browser 120 may open a new browser window and launch the website under the determined user profile 222 using the new browser window.
[0035] Reference Figure 3 , depicts another conceptual view of the example user interface 100. In this example, the browser 120 may have transitioned to the website 322 under a first profile (e.g., Profile 1) received from the profile manager 210 based on the user profile information 220. However, there may be multiple user profiles 326 corresponding to the website 322. Therefore, the user may select a second profile (e.g., Profile 2) as the user profile for the website 322.
[0036] In response to manually changing to the second profile, the content 324 of the website 322 may reflect the change in the user profile. Figure 3 As shown, content 324 of website 322 may display couches based on the second profile (eg, profile 2) having been selected, while content 324 may display furniture types other than couches based on the first profile (eg, profile 1).
[0037] Further in response to the manual change to the second profile, a profile favorite settings window 340 can be displayed in the user interface 100. The profile favorite settings window 340 can include content 342 that provides the user with one or more selections 344 to select whether the second profile (i.e., the profile selected by the user) should be designated as a permanent profile switch (e.g., a "favorite" profile) for the next visit to the website 322. The user can select one or more selections 344 and save the selections 344 (e.g., by selecting a save button 346) as the profile favorites data 228.
[0038] refer to Figure 4 , depicts an example method 400 for performing profile switching by a computing device. In an example, the method 400 may be performed by Figure 2 The computing device 200 and one or more components of the computing device 200 are executed as described herein (see, e.g. Figure 2 and Figure 5 ). An example of the operation of method 400 may be based on Figures 1 to 3 and Figure 5 is described.
[0039] At 402, method 400 may include receiving a request to initiate a new instance of a website. For example, computing device 200 and / or one or more components of computing device 200 (e.g., processor 502, profile manager 210, and / or URL component manager 212) may receive a request to initiate a new instance of website 122. In an example, the request may be received from originating application 204. An example of originating application 204 may be any application installed on computing device 200 (e.g., first application 110 or browser 120) or any online application accessed by computing device 200 (e.g., an online email application). In an example, the request may include a URL (e.g., URL 114) of a website (e.g., website 122).
[0040] At 404, method 400 may include determining a domain name of a website in response to the request. For example, computing device 200 and / or one or more components of computing device 200 (e.g., processor 502, profile manager 210, and / or URL component manager 212) may determine a domain name of website 122 in response to the request. For example, URL component manager 212 may parse components of a URL from the request to determine the domain name of the website.
[0041] At 406, method 400 may include determining, based on the user profile information, a first user profile corresponding to the domain name from the plurality of user profiles. For example, computing device 200 and / or one or more components of computing device 200 (e.g., processor 502, profile manager 210, and / or profile determiner 214) may determine, based on the user profile information corresponding to one or more of credential data 224, profile history data 226, profile favorites data 228, or management settings data 230, a first user profile corresponding to the domain name from the plurality of user profiles 222.
[0042] In some examples, method 400 may also include comparing the user profile information to the domain name and determining whether the user profile information corresponding to the first user profile corresponds to the domain name. For example, computing device 200 and / or one or more components of computing device 200 (e.g., processor 502, profile manager 210, and / or profile determiner 214) may compare user profile information 220 to the domain name to determine the first user profile, and determine whether the user profile information 220 corresponding to the first user profile corresponds to the domain name.
[0043] In some examples, method 400 may also include: determining multiple user profiles from a plurality of user profiles corresponding to the domain name, wherein the multiple user profiles include a first user profile, and selecting the first user profile from the multiple user profiles based on user profile information corresponding to one or more of the subdomain name or query parameters of the URL. For example, computing device 200 and / or one or more components of computing device 200 (e.g., processor 502, profile manager 210, and / or profile determiner 214) may compare user profile information 220 with URL component data 240 to determine the first user profile.
[0044] At 408, method 400 may include launching a new instance of the website in the browser according to the first user profile. For example, computing device 200 and / or one or more components of computing device 200 (e.g., processor 502, profile manager 210, and / or profile determiner 214) may launch a new instance of website 122 in browser 120 according to the first user profile. In an example, profile manager 210 may send information to browser 120 to launch website 122 under the first user profile.
