[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Application No. 17 / 325,846, filed on May 20, 2021, which claims the benefit and priority of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 028,812, filed on May 22, 2020, which is assigned to the assignee of this application and is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety as if fully set forth below and for all applicable purposes. Technical Field
[0003] Aspects of the present disclosure relate to wireless communications and, more particularly, to techniques for requesting scheduling. Background Art
[0004] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various telecommunication services such as telephony, video, data, messaging, broadcast, etc. These wireless communication systems may employ multiple access technologies capable of supporting communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., bandwidth, transmit power, etc.). Examples of such multiple access systems include 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems, Advanced LTE (LTE-A) systems, Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) systems, Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) systems, Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) systems, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) systems, Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA) systems, and Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA) systems, to name a few.
[0005] These multiple access technologies have been adopted in various telecommunication standards to provide a common protocol that enables different wireless devices to communicate at a city, country, region, and even global level. New radio (e.g., 5G NR) is an example of an emerging telecommunication standard. NR is an enhancement set to the LTE mobile standard released by 3GPP. NR is designed to better integrate with other open standards by improving spectrum efficiency, reducing costs, improving services, utilizing new spectrum, and using OFDMA with cyclic prefix (CP) on the downlink (DL) and on the uplink (UL), so as to better support mobile broadband Internet access. To this end, NR supports beamforming, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna technology, and carrier aggregation.
[0006] As the demand for mobile broadband access continues to grow, there is a need for further improvements to NR and LTE technologies. These improvements should also apply to other multiple access technologies and the telecommunication standards that employ them. Summary of the invention

[0038] Aspects of the present disclosure provide apparatus, methods, processing systems, and computer-readable media for requesting resource scheduling for data transmission. For example, a coverage enhancement scheduling request (SR) may be configured at a user equipment (UE) to enhance the coverage of a transmission. As used herein, enhancement of coverage for a transmission may refer to any improvement in a transmission, for example, improving reliability or throughput associated with the transmission.
[0039] A coverage-enhanced SR generally refers to an SR transmission that increases coverage for data scheduling, for example, by increasing the coverage of the SR transmission compared to a conventional SR, thereby indicating to a base station (BS) that a coverage enhancement procedure for scheduling data transmission or the data transmission itself, or both, is implemented. For example, the coverage of the SR transmission may be enhanced by multiple repetitions of a conventional SR. In another example, the coverage of the data transmission may be enhanced by triggering a channel state information (CSI)-reference signal (RS) transmission by the BS or by triggering the BS to apply repetitions to one or more data transmissions.
[0040] In some cases, the beam used for transmission may become weak or affected by partial shadowing. Certain aspects provide techniques for establishing a certain performance level for a channel, even though the weaker beam is still active. In addition, certain aspects provide techniques for the UE to trigger CSI operations so that the BS can use reliable CSI feedback for new beam allocations. Therefore, in order to establish this performance level and reliability for transmission when using a weaker beam, the UE may be configured with a coverage enhancement SR. In other words, in one or more aspects, the UE may detect coverage issues earlier than the BS and may take one or more actions to enhance coverage for the active beam. When the channel quality for request or data transmission has degraded or when there is a lack of response to the SR from the base station (BS), the UE may choose to use a coverage enhancement SR to send a scheduling request to improve transmission coverage.
[0041] The following description provides an example of a technology for requesting scheduling in a communication system. The functions and arrangements of the elements discussed may be changed without departing from the present disclosure. Various processes or components may be omitted, replaced or added in various examples as appropriate. For example, the method described may be performed in an order different from the order described, and various steps may be added, omitted or combined. In addition, the features described in some examples may be combined in some other examples. For example, using any number of aspects set forth herein, a device may be implemented or a method may be implemented. In addition, the scope of the present disclosure is intended to cover such devices or methods implemented using other structures, functions, or structures and functions other than or different from the various aspects of the disclosure set forth herein. It should be understood that any aspect of the disclosure disclosed herein may be embodied by one or more elements of the claims. The word "exemplary" is used herein to mean "used as an example, instance or illustration". Any aspect described as "exemplary" herein may not necessarily be interpreted as being preferred or more advantageous than other aspects.
[0042] Generally, any number of wireless networks may be deployed in a given geographic area. Each wireless network may support a specific radio access technology (RAT) and may operate on one or more frequencies. RAT may also be referred to as a radio technology, air interface, etc. Frequency may also be referred to as a carrier, subcarrier, frequency channel, tone, subband, etc. Each frequency may support a single RAT in a given geographic area in order to avoid interference between wireless networks with different RATs.
[0043] The techniques described herein can be used for various wireless networks and radio technologies. Although terms commonly associated with 3G, 4G, and / or new radio (e.g., 5G NR) wireless technologies may be used herein to describe various aspects, various aspects of the present disclosure may be applied to communication systems based on other generations.
[0044] NR access can support various wireless communication services, such as enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) targeting wide bandwidth (e.g., 80MHz or greater), millimeter wave (mmW) targeting high carrier frequency (e.g., 25GHz or greater), massive machine type communication MTC (mMTC) targeting non-backward compatible MTC technology, and / or mission critical targeting ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC). These services may include latency and reliability requirements. These services may also have different transmission time intervals (TTIs) to meet corresponding quality of service (QoS) requirements. In addition, these services can coexist in the same subframe. NR supports beamforming and can dynamically configure beam directions. MIMO transmission with precoding can also be supported. The MIMO configuration in the downlink (DL) can support up to 8 transmit antennas with multi-layer DL transmission of up to 8 streams and up to 2 streams per UE. Multi-layer transmission with up to 2 streams per UE can be supported. Aggregation of multiple cells with up to 8 serving cells can be supported.
[0045] Figure 1 An example wireless communication network 100 is shown in which aspects of the present disclosure may be performed. For example, the wireless communication network 100 may be a NR system (e.g., a 5G NR network). Figure 1 As shown in FIG, the wireless communication network 100 may be in communication with a core network 132. The core network 132 may be in communication with one or more BSs 110 and / or UEs 120 in the wireless communication network 100 via one or more interfaces.
[0046] like Figure 1 As shown in , the wireless communication network 100 may include multiple BSs 110a-z (each also individually referred to herein as BS 110 or collectively referred to as BS 110) and other network entities. BS 110 may provide communication coverage for a specific geographic area (sometimes referred to as a "cell"), which may be fixed or may move according to the location of the mobile BS 110. In some examples, BS 110 may be interconnected with each other and / or with one or more other BSs or network nodes (not shown) in the wireless communication network 100 through various types of backhaul interfaces (e.g., direct physical connections, wireless connections, virtual networks, etc.) using any suitable transport network. Figure 1In the example shown in FIG. 1 , BSs 110a, 110b, and 110c may be macro BSs for macro cells 102a, 102b, and 102c, respectively. BS 110x may be a pico BS for pico cell 102x. BSs 110y and 110z may be femto BSs for femto cells 102y and 102z, respectively. A BS may support one or more cells. A network controller 130 may be coupled to a set of BSs 110 and provide coordination and control (e.g., via a backhaul) for these BSs 110.
[0047] BS 110 communicates with UEs 120a-y (each also referred to herein individually as UE 120 or collectively as UE 120) in the wireless communication network 100. UEs 120 (e.g., 120x, 120y, etc.) may be dispersed throughout the wireless communication network 100, and each UE 120 may be fixed or mobile. The wireless communication network 100 may also include a relay station (e.g., relay station 110r) (also referred to as a repeater, etc.) that receives transmissions of data and / or other information from an upstream station (e.g., BS 110a or UE 120r) and sends transmissions of data and / or other information to a downstream station (e.g., UE 120 or BS 110), or relays transmissions between UEs 120 to facilitate communication between devices.
[0048] like Figure 1 As shown in FIG. 1 , one or more transmit (TX) and receive (RX) beams 140 may be used for communication (e.g., DL and uplink (UL) communication) between BS 110a and UE 120a. In some cases, beam 140 used for communication between BS 110a and UE 120a may fail, and a beam failure condition may be detected. Thus, a new candidate beam for resolving the beam failure condition may be identified, and a beam failure recovery procedure may be initiated using the candidate beam.
[0049] According to certain aspects, BS 110 and UE 120 may be configured to manage requests for scheduling. Figure 1 As shown in , BS 110a includes a scheduling manager 112. According to aspects of the present disclosure, the scheduling manager 122 may be configured to: receive an SR for requesting resource allocation for data transmission from a UE; and send an indication to the UE indicating resource allocation for data transmission, wherein the indication is generated based on whether the SR is generated according to at least one coverage enhancement SR configuration or another SR configuration. Figure 1As shown in , UE 120a includes a scheduling manager 122. According to aspects of the present disclosure, the scheduling manager 22 may be configured to: send an SR to a BS to request resource allocation for data transmission, wherein the SR is selected between at least one coverage enhancement SR configuration and another SR configuration for requesting resource allocation for data transmission at the UE; and receive an indication of resource allocation for data transmission.
[0050] Figure 2 1 shows example components 200 of a BS 110a and a UE 120a (eg, in Figure 1 In the wireless communication network 100), it can be used to implement various aspects of the present disclosure.
[0051] At BS 110a, transmit processor 220 may receive data from data source 212 and control information from controller / processor 240. Control information may be used for a physical broadcast channel (PBCH), a physical control format indicator channel (PCFICH), a physical hybrid ARQ indicator channel (PHICH), a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH), a group common PDCCH (GC PDCCH), etc. Data may be used for a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH), etc. A medium access control (MAC)-control element (MAC-CE) is a MAC layer communication structure that may be used for control command exchange between wireless nodes. A MAC-CE may be carried in a shared channel such as a PDSCH, a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH), or a physical sidelink shared channel (PSSCH).
[0052] The processor 220 may process (e.g., encode and symbol map) data and control information, respectively, to obtain data symbols and control symbols. The processor 220 may also generate reference signals, such as for primary synchronization signals (PSS), secondary synchronization signals (SSS), and channel state information reference symbols (CSI-RS). The transmit (TX) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) processor 230 may perform spatial processing (e.g., precoding) on data symbols, control symbols, and / or reference symbols (if applicable), and may provide an output symbol stream to the modulator (MOD) 232a-232t. Each modulator 232 may process a corresponding output symbol stream (e.g., for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), etc.) to obtain an output sample stream. Each modulator may further process (e.g., convert to analog, amplify, filter, and up-convert) the output sample stream to obtain a DL signal. The DL signals from modulators 232a-232t may be transmitted via antennas 234a-234t, respectively.
[0053] At UE 120a, antennas 252a-252r can receive DL signals from BS 110a and can provide received signals to demodulators (DEMODs) 254a-254r in the transceiver, respectively. Each demodulator 254a-254r in the transceiver can adjust (e.g., filter, amplify, downconvert, and digitize) the corresponding received signal to obtain input samples. Each demodulator can further process the input samples (e.g., for OFDM, etc.) to obtain received symbols. MIMO detector 256 can obtain received symbols from all demodulators 254a-254r in the transceiver, perform MIMO detection on the received symbols (if applicable), and provide detected symbols. Receive processor 258 can process (e.g., demodulate, deinterleave, and decode) the detected symbols, provide decoded data for UE 120a to data sink 260, and provide decoded control information to controller / processor 280.
[0054] On the UL, at the UE 120a, a transmit processor 264 may receive and process data from a data source 262 (e.g., for a PUSCH) and control information from a controller / processor 280 (e.g., for a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH)). The transmit processor 264 may also generate reference symbols for a reference signal (RS), such as a sounding reference signal (SRS). The symbols from the transmit processor 264 may be precoded by a TX MIMO processor 266 (if applicable), further processed by modulators 254a-254r (e.g., for SC-FDM, etc.) in the transceiver, and transmitted to the BS 110a. At the BS 110a, the UL signal from the UE 120a may be received by the antenna 234, processed by the modulator 232, detected by the MIMO detector 236 (if applicable), and further processed by the receive processor 238 to obtain decoded data and control information transmitted by the UE 120a. The receive processor 238 may provide decoded data to a data sink 239 and decoded control information to a controller / processor 240 .
[0055] Memories 242 and 282 may store data and program codes for BS 110a and UE 120a, respectively.A scheduler 244 may schedule UEs for data transmission on the DL and / or UL.
[0056] The antenna 252, processors 266, 258, 264 and / or controller / processor 280 of the UE 120a and / or the antenna 234, processors 220, 230, 238 and / or controller / processor 240 of the BS 110a may be used to perform the various techniques and methods described herein. Figure 2As shown in FIG. 1 , according to various aspects described herein, the controller / processor 240 of the BS 110a has a scheduling manager 112. For example, Figure 2 As shown in FIG. 1 , the controller / processor 280 of the UE 120a has a schedule manager 122 in accordance with various aspects described herein. Although shown at the controller / processor level, other components of the UE 120a and BS 110a may be used to perform the operations described herein.
[0057] NR can utilize OFDM with a cyclic prefix (CP) on UL and DL. NR can support half-duplex operation using time division duplex (TDD). OFDM and single carrier frequency division multiplexing (SC-FDM) can divide the system bandwidth into multiple orthogonal subcarriers, which are also commonly referred to as tones, frequencies, etc. Each subcarrier can be modulated with data. Modulation symbols can be sent using OFDM in the frequency domain, and modulation symbols can be sent using SC-FDM in the time domain. The spacing between adjacent subcarriers can be fixed, and the total number of subcarriers can depend on the system bandwidth. The minimum resource allocation, called a resource block (RB), can be 12 consecutive subcarriers. The system bandwidth can also be divided into subbands. For example, a subband can cover multiple RBs. NR can support a basic subcarrier spacing (SCS) of 15KHz, and other SCSs (e.g., 30KHz, 60KHz, 120KHz, 240KHz, etc.) can be defined relative to the basic SCS.
[0058] The electromagnetic spectrum is typically subdivided into various categories, bands, channels, etc. based on frequency / wavelength. In 5G NR, two initial operating bands have been identified with the frequency range names FR1 (410 MHz-7.125 GHz) and FR2 (24.25 GHz-52.6 GHz). It should be understood that although a portion of FR1 is greater than 6 GHz, FR1 is often (interchangeably) referred to as the "sub-6 GHz" band in various documents and articles. Similar naming issues sometimes arise with respect to FR2, which is often (interchangeably) referred to as the "millimeter wave" band in documents and articles, although it is different from the extremely high frequency (EHF) band (30 GHz-300 GHz) identified as the "millimeter wave" band by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
[0059] Frequencies between FR1 and FR2 are generally referred to as mid-band frequencies. Recent 5G NR research has identified the operating bands for these mid-band frequencies as the frequency range designation FR3 (7.125 GHz–24.25 GHz). The frequency bands falling within FR3 may inherit FR1 characteristics and / or FR2 characteristics, and thus may effectively extend the characteristics of FR1 and / or FR2 to mid-band frequencies. In addition, higher frequency bands are currently being explored to extend 5G NR operations above 52.6 GHz. For example, three higher operating bands have been identified as the frequency range designations FR4a or FR4-1 (52.6 GHz–71 GHz), FR4 (52.6 GHz–114.25 GHz), and FR5 (114.25 GHz–300 GHz). Each of these higher frequency bands falls within the EHF band.
[0060] In view of the above, unless otherwise specifically stated, it should be understood that if the term "sub-6 GHz" or the like is used herein, it can be broadly referred to as a frequency that can be less than 6 GHz, can be within FR1, or can include mid-band frequencies. In addition, unless otherwise specifically stated, it should be understood that if the term "millimeter wave" or the like is used herein, it can be broadly referred to as a frequency that can include mid-band frequencies, can be within FR2, FR4, FR4-a or FR4-1 and / or FR5, or can be within the EHF band.
[0061] Figure 3 300 is a diagram showing an example of a frame format for NR. The transmission timeline for each of DL and UL can be divided into units of radio frames. Each radio frame can have a predetermined duration (e.g., 10ms) and can be divided into 10 subframes with indices 0 to 9, each subframe being 1ms. Each subframe can include a variable number of slots (e.g., 1, 2, 4, 8, 16... slots), depending on the SCS. Each slot can include a variable number of symbol periods (e.g., 7 or 14 symbols), depending on the SCS. An index can be assigned to the symbol period in each slot. A microslot (which can be referred to as a subslot structure) refers to a TTI with a duration less than a slot (e.g., 2, 3, or 4 symbols). Each symbol in a slot can indicate a link direction (e.g., DL, UL, or flexible) for data transmission, and the link direction for each subframe can be dynamically switched. The link direction can be based on the slot format. Each slot can include DL / UL data and DL / UL control information.
[0062] Example Techniques for Request Scheduling
[0063] Beam reliability may affect the coverage of a unicast channel (e.g., in frequency range 2 (FR2)). In some cases, a narrow unicast beam may become weak or may be affected by partial shadowing. Certain aspects provide techniques for establishing a certain performance level for a unicast channel, even though the weaker beam is still active. In addition, certain aspects provide techniques for a UE to trigger a channel state information (CSI) operation so that a base station (BS) can use reliable CSI feedback to decide on a new beam assignment. In some cases, the UE may detect a coverage problem earlier than the BS and may take one or more actions to enhance the coverage of the active beam. Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to techniques for coverage enhancement for a scheduling request (SR) or indicated by an SR, as described in more detail herein.
[0064] Figure 4 4 is a flow diagram illustrating example operations 400 for wireless communications in accordance with certain aspects of the present disclosure. Operations 400 may be performed, for example, by a BS (eg, such as BS 110a in wireless communication network 100).
[0065] Operation 400 may be implemented as a processor on one or more processors (e.g., Figure 2 In addition, the BS may transmit and receive signals in operation 400, for example, through one or more antennas (e.g., Figure 2 In some aspects, the transmission and / or reception of signals by the BS may be implemented via a bus interface of one or more processors (eg, the controller / processor 240) for obtaining and / or outputting signals.
[0066] Operations 400 may begin at block 405 with the BS receiving an SR from a UE requesting resource allocation for data transmission. At block 410, the BS may send an indication to the UE indicating resource allocation for data transmission, wherein the indication is generated based on whether the SR is generated according to at least one coverage enhancement SR configuration or another SR configuration. In certain aspects, the indication may include downlink control information (DCI).
[0067] Figure 5 5 is a flow diagram illustrating example operations 500 for wireless communications in accordance with certain aspects of the present disclosure. For example, the operations 500 may be performed by a UE (eg, such as UE 120a in the wireless communications network 100).
[0068] Operation 500 may be an operation performed by the UE that is complementary to operation 400 performed by the BS. Operation 500 may be implemented as a processor (eg, Figure 2In addition, the UE may transmit and receive signals in operation 500, for example, through one or more antennas (e.g., Figure 2 In some aspects, the UE may transmit and / or receive signals via a bus interface of one or more processors (eg, controller / processor 280) for obtaining and / or outputting signals.
[0069] Operation 500 may begin at box 505 with the UE sending an SR to the BS to request resource allocation for data transmission, wherein the SR is selected between at least one coverage-enhanced SR configuration (also referred to as a coverage-enhanced SR configuration) and another SR configuration (also referred to as a conventional SR configuration or conventional SR) for requesting resource allocation for data transmission at the UE.
[0070] According to certain aspects, a coverage-enhanced SR configuration may include multiple coverage-enhanced SR configurations. The type of each coverage-enhanced SR configuration in the multiple coverage-enhanced SR configurations may be associated with a reason for selecting at least one coverage-enhanced SR configuration over another SR configuration. In some cases, a coverage-enhanced SR configuration may be a configuration for SR transmission with enhanced coverage. For example, a coverage-enhanced SR configuration may include a repetition of a conventional SR. In some cases, a coverage-enhanced SR may indicate to the BS to take one or more actions to enhance coverage (or scheduling of data transmission) of a data transmission (e.g., a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH)). For example, a coverage-enhanced SR may indicate to the BS to apply repetition to a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) transmission. In another example, a coverage-enhanced SR may indicate to the BS to trigger CSI-RS transmission to enhance coverage of a data transmission.
[0071] One type of coverage enhancing SR configuration may be used when experiencing degraded channel quality. Another type of coverage enhancing SR configuration may be used if there is no response from the BS.
[0072] In certain aspects, a coverage-enhanced SR configuration may be configured at a UE to request resource allocation on a channel experiencing degraded channel quality. In certain aspects, a coverage-enhanced SR configuration may be configured at a UE to request resource allocation in the absence of a response to a SR from a BS.
[0073] At block 510, the UE receives an indication of resource allocation for data transmission. In certain aspects, the indication may include downlink control information (DCI).
[0074] Figure 66 is a flow diagram illustrating example operations 600 performed by a BS for responding to a scheduling request, in accordance with certain aspects of the present disclosure. Operations 600 may be performed, for example, by BS 110a in wireless communication network 100.
[0075] Operation 600 may be implemented as a processor on one or more processors (e.g., Figure 2 In addition, the BS may transmit and receive signals in operation 400, for example, through one or more antennas (e.g., Figure 2 In some aspects, the transmission and / or reception of signals by the BS may be implemented via a bus interface of one or more processors (eg, the controller / processor 240) for obtaining and / or outputting signals.
[0076] Operations 600 may begin at block 605 with the BS receiving an SR from a UE requesting resource allocation for data transmission. At block 610, the BS may determine whether the SR is according to a coverage enhancement SR configuration (also referred to as a coverage enhancement SR configuration) or another SR configuration (e.g., a conventional SR configuration). At block 615, the BS may generate a DCI indicating the resource allocation for data transmission, and at block 620, send the DCI to the UE.
[0077] Figure 7 7 is a flow diagram illustrating example operations 700 for requesting scheduling by a UE, in accordance with certain aspects of the present disclosure. For example, the operations 700 may be performed by a UE 120a in the wireless communication network 100.
[0078] Operation 700 may be performed by the UE and may be complementary to operation 600 performed by the BS. Operation 700 may be implemented as a processor (eg, Figure 2 In addition, the UE may transmit and receive signals in operation 700, for example, through one or more antennas (e.g., Figure 2 In some aspects, the UE may transmit and / or receive signals via a bus interface of one or more processors (eg, controller / processor 280) for obtaining and / or outputting signals.
[0079] Operations 700 may begin at block 705 with the UE selecting between a coverage-enhancing SR configuration (also referred to as a coverage-enhanced SR configuration) and another SR configuration (e.g., also referred to as “conventional SR”) for requesting resource allocation for data transmission at the UE. For example, the coverage-enhancing SR configuration may be configured at the UE to request resource allocation on a channel experiencing degraded channel quality.
[0080] In some cases, a coverage-enhanced SR configuration may be a configuration for SR transmission with enhanced coverage. For example, a coverage-enhanced SR configuration may include a repetition of a conventional SR. In some cases, a coverage-enhanced SR may instruct the BS to take one or more actions to enhance coverage of a data transmission (or scheduling of a data transmission). For example, a coverage-enhanced SR may indicate to the base station to trigger CSI RS transmission to enhance coverage of a data transmission.
[0081] At block 710, the UE generates a SR according to the selection, and sends the SR to the BS to request resource allocation for data transmission at block 715. At block 720, the UE receives a DCI indicating resource allocation for data transmission.
[0082] In some cases, a coverage-enhanced SR configuration may be associated with a different strategy for triggering beam failure recovery (BFR) than a conventional SR configuration, as described in more detail herein. For example, a strategy for triggering BFR for a coverage-enhanced SR configuration may include a strategy for triggering BFR after a single failed attempt to request scheduling using the coverage-enhanced SR configuration.
[0083] In certain aspects, the BS may configure the UE with multiple SR configurations, one of which may be a coverage enhanced SR configuration as described herein. For example, the BS may indicate different formats or types of SRs with different resources, transmission parameters, duty cycles, or any combination thereof. The BS may send an indication of a coverage enhanced SR configuration to the UE, while in other aspects, the configuration of the SR may be pre-configured (e.g., according to a standard) at the UE. The coverage enhanced SR configuration may have a different format than a conventional SR configuration, may be associated with different time or frequency resources for transmitting the corresponding SR (compared to a conventional SR configuration), may be associated with a different duty cycle for transmitting the corresponding SR (compared to a conventional SR configuration), may be associated with different transmission parameters (e.g., transmit power) for transmitting the corresponding SR (compared to a conventional SR configuration), or any combination thereof. For example, in some cases, the timing for transmission of a coverage enhanced SR may be less frequent than the timing for a conventional SR.
[0084] In some aspects, a UE may be configured with a conventional SR and a coverage enhancement SR option. The use of a coverage enhancement SR by the UE may be implicitly interpreted as a request for coverage enhancement for other channels or processes. For example, as described herein, a coverage enhancement SR may trigger a pre-configured CSI-RS process, or may indicate to the BS that resources are allocated to provide enhanced coverage. In another example, a coverage enhancement SR may trigger a repetition of a PDCCH transmission by the BS. Thus, the UE may monitor the repetition of the PDCCH from the BS.
[0085] In some cases, as described herein, the coverage-enhanced SR may be pre-configured at the UE (e.g., according to a standard). In other cases, the coverage-enhanced SR may be configured by the BS. In certain aspects, the coverage-enhanced SR (e.g., pre-configured at the UE or configured by the BS) may be activated by the BS (e.g., using a DCI).
[0086] Figure 8 8 is a flow diagram illustrating example operations 800 for configuring and activating a coverage enhancing SR in accordance with certain aspects of the present disclosure. As shown, a UE 802 (e.g., such as UE 120a in wireless communication network 100) may optionally receive a message 806 (e.g., a radio resource control (RRC) message) indicating configuration for a coverage enhancing SR from a BS 804 (e.g., such as BS 110a in wireless communication network 100). The UE 802 may then receive a message 808 activating the coverage enhancing SR, thereby allowing the UE 802 to use the coverage enhancing SR in the event of degraded channel quality or when there is a lack of response from the BS 804 after sending more than one conventional SR. In some cases, the message 808 may deactivate the conventional SR configuration at the UE 802. For example, the network may determine that the UE 802 should use the coverage enhancing SR and may deactivate the conventional SR at the UE 802 accordingly. At block 810, the UE 802 may select between a regular SR and a coverage-enhanced SR and accordingly send a coverage-enhanced SR 812. The BS 804 and the UE 802 may then perform coverage enhancement 814 as described herein. The BS 804 may send an indication 816 (e.g., a DCI, a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE), or another dynamic indication) to the UE indicating resource allocation for data transmission. In some cases, the indication may indicate scheduling of CSI-RS transmissions. In some cases, the indication may indicate some change in the BS 804's transmission of the indication (e.g., repetition of a PDCCH transmission) and the UE 802's monitoring of the indication.
[0087] In some cases, there may be different rules (e.g., policies) for triggering beam failure recovery (BFR) based on unsuccessful trials of each type of SR. For example, a single unsuccessful trial of a coverage-enhanced SR may trigger BFR, while multiple unsuccessful trials of a conventional SR may trigger BFR. The rules for triggering BFR (based on the history of different types of SR trials) may be configured by the UE. In some cases, a coverage-enhanced SR may serve as an intermediate stage between a conventional SR and triggering BFR, as described in more detail herein. For example, after a certain number of unsuccessful trials of a conventional SR, the UE may attempt a coverage-enhanced SR before triggering BFR.
[0088] Fig. 9 9 is a flow diagram illustrating example operations 900 for triggering BFR in accordance with certain aspects of the present disclosure. As shown, a UE 902 (e.g., such as UE 120a in wireless communication network 100) may send a single conventional SR or multiple conventional SRs to a BS 904 (e.g., such as BS 110a in wireless communication network 100). For example, UE 902 may send conventional SR 1 to conventional SR n, where n is an integer equal to or greater than 1. At block 910, UE 902 may determine that an attempt to request scheduling through a conventional SR has failed, and therefore, UE 902 may transition to requesting resource allocation using a coverage-enhancing SR 912. For example, once a threshold number of scheduling attempts using a conventional SR have failed, UE 902 may send a coverage-enhancing SR. If an attempt to request scheduling using a coverage-enhancing SR also fails, UE 902 may initiate BFR. For example, as shown, UE 902 may send a BFR request (BFRQ) 914 to initiate a BFR procedure 916.

[0156] Additional considerations
[0157] The techniques described herein may be used for various wireless communication technologies, such as NR (e.g., 5G NR), 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE), Advanced LTE (LTE-A), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA), Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA), Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC FDMA), Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA), and other networks. The terms "network" and "system" are often used interchangeably. A CDMA network may implement radio technologies such as Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA), cdma2000, and the like. UTRA includes Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) and other variants of CDMA. cdma2000 covers IS-2000, IS-95, and IS-856 standards. A TDMA network may implement radio technologies such as Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). OFDMA networks may implement radio technologies such as NR (e.g., 5G RA), Evolved UTRA (E-UTRA), Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB), IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi), IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX), IEEE 802.20, Flash-OFDMA, etc. UTRA and E-UTRA are part of Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). LTE and LTE-A are versions of UMTS that use E-UTRA. UTRA, E-UTRA, UMTS, LTE, LTE-A, and GSM are described in documents from an organization named "3rd Generation Partnership Project" (3GPP). cdma2000 and UMB are described in documents from an organization named "3rd Generation Partnership Project 2" (3GPP2). NR is an emerging wireless communication technology under development.
[0158] In 3GPP, the term "cell" may refer to the coverage area of a Node B (NB) and / or a NB subsystem serving the coverage area, depending on the context in which the term is used. In NR systems, the term "cell" and BS, next generation Node B (gNB or gNodeB), access point (AP), distributed unit (DU), carrier or transmit receive point (TRP) may be interchangeable. A BS may provide communication coverage for macro cells, pico cells, femto cells and / or other types of cells. A macro cell may cover a relatively large geographic area (e.g., a radius of several kilometers) and may allow unrestricted access by UEs with service subscriptions. A pico cell may cover a relatively small geographic area and may allow unrestricted access by UEs with service subscriptions. A femto cell may cover a relatively small geographic area (e.g., a residence) and may allow restricted access by UEs associated with the femto cell (e.g., UEs in a closed subscriber group (CSG), UEs for users in a residence, etc.). A BS for a macro cell may be referred to as a macro BS. A BS for a pico cell may be referred to as a pico BS. A BS for a femto cell may be called a femto BS or a home BS.
[0159] UE may also be referred to as a mobile station, a terminal, an access terminal, a subscriber unit, a station, a customer premises equipment (CPE), a cellular phone, a smart phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a wireless modem, a wireless communication device, a handheld device, a laptop computer, a cordless phone, a wireless local loop (WLL) station, a tablet computer, a camera, a gaming device, a netbook, a smartbook, an ultrabook, an appliance, a medical device or medical apparatus, a biometric sensor / device, a wearable device (such as a smart watch, smart clothing, smart glasses, a smart wristband, smart jewelry (e.g., a smart ring, a smart bracelet, etc.)), an entertainment device (e.g., a music device, a video device, a satellite radio unit, etc.), a vehicle component or sensor, a smart meter / sensor, an industrial manufacturing device, a global positioning system device, or any other suitable device configured to communicate via a wireless or wired medium. MTC and eMTC UEs include, for example, robots, drones, remote devices, sensors, meters, monitors, location tags, etc., which can communicate with a BS, another device (e.g., a remote device), or some other entity. A wireless node can provide, for example, a connection to a network (e.g., a wide area network such as the Internet or a cellular network) or to a network via a wired or wireless communication link. Some UEs can be considered Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which can be narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) devices.
[0160] In some examples, access to the air interface can be scheduled. The scheduling entity (e.g., BS) allocates resources for communication between some or all devices and apparatuses in its service area or cell. The scheduling entity may be responsible for scheduling, allocating, reconfiguring, and releasing resources for one or more subordinate entities. That is, for scheduled communications, the subordinate entity utilizes the resources allocated by the scheduling entity. The BS is not the only entity that can be used as a scheduling entity. In some examples, the UE may be used as a scheduling entity, and resources may be scheduled for one or more subordinate entities (e.g., one or more other UEs), and other UEs may utilize the resources scheduled by the UE for wireless communication. In some examples, the UE may be used as a scheduling entity in a peer-to-peer (P2P) network or in a mesh network. In the mesh network example, in addition to communicating with the scheduling entity, the UEs may also communicate directly with each other.

For example, when a triggering event occurs, a software module may be loaded from a hard drive into a RAM. During the execution of a software module, a processor may load some of the instructions into a cache to increase access speed. Subsequently, one or more cache lines may be loaded into a general register stack to be executed by a processor. It will be understood that when the function of a software module is mentioned below, this function is implemented by a processor when executing instructions from the software module.
[0170] Additionally, any connection is properly termed a computer-readable medium. For example, if the software is transmitted from a website, server or other remote source using a coaxial cable, fiber optic cable, twisted pair, digital subscriber line (DSL), or wireless technology (e.g., infrared (IR), radio and microwave), then the coaxial cable, fiber optic cable, twisted pair, DSL, or wireless technology (e.g., infrared, radio and microwave) are included in the definition of medium.
