Restricted dissemination of topology information in a communication network

A communication network comprises a plurality of nodes interconnected by communication links. A node maintains a database of topology information relating to the network. A node receives a topology advertisement from another node of the network which provides information about a part of the network. The topology advertisement includes a metric which is related to aggregate distance or cost of the path travelled by the topology advertisement. The node compares the metric in the newly received topology advertisement with one previously received for the same part of the network. The database is updated with the newly received topology advertisement if the value of the metric in the newly received topology advertisement is lower than the metric in the topology advertisement previously received for the same part of the network. The method can be used during flooding or database synchronisation. The metric can be carried within a header or body of a topology advertisement, such as a Link State Advertisement (LSA).

Method and apparatus for disseminating topology information and for discovering new neighboring nodes

A proactive link-state routing protocol designed for mobile ad-hoc networks is disclosed, which provides hop-by-hop routing along shortest paths to each destination. Each node running the present protocol will compute a source tree (providing paths to all reachable nodes) based on partial topology information stored in its topology table. To minimize overhead, each node reports only “part” of its source tree to neighbors. The present invention employs a combination of periodic and differential updates to keep all neighbors informed of the reportable part of its source tree. The present invention performs neighbor discovery using “differential” HELLO messages that report only “changes” in the status of neighbors. This results in HELLO messages that are much smaller than those of other link-state routing protocols.

Protocol for secure and energy-efficient reprogramming of wireless multi-hop sensor networks

A protocol for optimizing the energy for code upload to sensors in a wireless sensor network and speeding up the dissemination if multiple sources of code are available. Energy optimization is achieved by equipping each node with limited non-local topology information, which it uses to determine the time when it can go to sleep since code is not being distributed in its vicinity. Another aspect of the invention is a protocol that facilitates secure upload of code in the wireless sensor network. The secure communication protocol divides the sensor field into control groups each with a control node, and manages data exchange between nodes within a control group through the mediation of a control head which provides the common key. The keys are refreshed periodically and the control nodes are changed periodically to enhance security. The protocol facilitates secure communication between sensor nodes despite the compromise of any number of other nodes in the network.

Adaptive topology discovery in communication networks

A topology discovery process is used to discover all of the links in an ad hoc network and thereby ascertain the topology of the entire network. One of the nodes of the network, referred to as the coordinator, receives the topology information which can then be used to, for example, distribute a routing table to each other node of the network. The process has a Diffusion phase in which a k-resilient mesh, k>1, is created by propagating a topology request message through the network. Through this process, the nodes obtain information from which they are able to discern their local neighbor information. In a subsequent, Gathering phase, the local neighbor information is reported upstream from a node to its parents in the mesh and thence to the parents' parents and so forth back to the coordinator. The robustness of the Diffusion phase is enhanced by allowing a node to have more than one parent as well as by a number of techniques, including use of a so-called diffusion acknowledgement message. The robustness of the Gathering phase is enhanced by a number of techniques including the use of timeouts that ensure that a node will report its neighbor information upstream even if it never receives neighbor information from one or more downstream neighbors and the use of a panic mode that enhances the probability that a node will get its neighbor information, and its descendents' neighbor information, reported upstream even if that node has lost connectivity with all of its parents.

Method and system for discovering network paths

One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that identifies network switches along a path. During operation, the system receives an address of a source node and an address of a destination node. The system maintains a set of topology information for a network. The system further simulates a data packet originated at the source node and destined for the destination node. During the simulation, the system determines whether a current-hop node performs layer-3, layer-2, or sub-layer-2 switching. The system sends a query to the current-hop node over a separate control channel to determine the status of the current-hop node and discover a next-hop node. The system then receives a reply. The system determines the next-hop node based on the reply and sets the next-hop node as the current-hop node.

Identifying nodes in a ring network

A master node in a packet ring network periodically sends a packet containing a discovery marker into the packet ring network. As each node in turn receives the packet, each adds its own discovery marker, which contains its topology information, to the packet, saves the topology information of others, and resends the packet to the next node in the ring. Eventually, the master node receives the packet containing a chain of discovery markers for all active nodes terminated by the master's own discovery marker, so the master node then removes its own discovery marker and resends the packet in to the ring network. Each node in turn then removes its own discovery marker. In this way, all nodes in the ring see topology information for every other active node.

Method of routing point-to-multipoint traffic on an MPLS network

The present invention relates to a point-to-multipoint traffic routing method that routes a multicast traffic through a determined tree on an MPLS network. A node on an MPLS network conducting a point-to-multipoint traffic routing method receives a message with an object including topology information on a determined tree, determines whether itself is a copy node or not based on the topology information, and copies, if determined to a copy node, the received message to transmit to at least two nodes specified as next by the topology information. The present routing method ensures smooth operations of a copy and a merge node as well as an overall network.
