Description

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0002] This patent application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 013,373, filed on April 21, 2020, entitled “TECHNIQUES FOR RANDOM ACCESS CHANNEL BEAM SWEEPING ACROSS MULTIPLE PHYSICAL CELL IDENTIFIERS OF A SERVING CELL,” and U.S. Non-Provisional Patent Application No. 17 / 198,483, filed on March 11, 2021, entitled “TECHNIQUES FOR RANDOM ACCESS CHANNEL BEAM SWEEPING ACROSS MULTIPLE PHYSICAL CELL IDENTIFIERS OF A SERVING CELL,” which are hereby expressly incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field

[0003] Aspects of the present disclosure relate generally to wireless communications and techniques and apparatus for random access channel (RACH) beam scanning across multiple physical cell identifiers (PCIs) of a serving cell. Background Art

[0004] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide a variety of telecommunication services, such as telephony, video, data, messaging, and broadcasting. Typical wireless communication systems may employ multiple access technologies that can support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., bandwidth, transmit power, etc.). Examples of such multiple access technologies include code division multiple access (CDMA) systems, time division multiple access (TDMA) systems, frequency division multiple access (FDMA) systems, orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) systems, time division synchronous code division multiple access (TD-SCDMA) systems, and long term evolution (LTE). LTE / LTE-Advanced is a set of enhancements to the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) mobile standard promulgated by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

[0005] A wireless communication network may include multiple base stations (BSs) that can support communications for multiple user equipments (UEs). The UE may communicate with the BS via a downlink and an uplink. The downlink (or forward link) refers to the communication link from the BS to the UE, while the uplink (or reverse link) refers to the communication link from the UE to the BS. As will be described in more detail herein, the BS may be referred to as a Node B, gNB, access point (AP), radio head, transmit receive point (TRP), new radio (NR) BS, 5G Node B, etc.

[0006] The above-mentioned multiple access technologies have been adopted in various telecommunication standards to provide a common protocol that enables different user equipment to communicate at the city, country, region, and even global level. NR (also known as 5G) is an enhancement set of the LTE mobile standard promulgated by 3GPP. NR is designed to use orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) (CP-OFDM) with cyclic prefix (CP) on the downlink (DL) and CP-OFDM and / or SC-FDM (e.g., also known as discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM)) on the uplink (UL) to improve spectrum efficiency, reduce costs, improve services, utilize new spectrum, and better integrate with other open standards, as well as support beamforming, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna technology, and carrier aggregation, and better support mobile broadband Internet access. However, as the demand for mobile broadband access continues to grow, there is a need to further improve LTE and NR technologies. Preferably, these improvements should be applicable to other multiple access technologies and telecommunication standards that adopt these technologies. Summary of the invention

[0182] The various aspects of the present disclosure will be described more fully below with reference to the accompanying drawings. However, the present disclosure can be implemented in many different forms, and the present disclosure should not be interpreted as being limited to any specific structure or function presented throughout the present disclosure. On the contrary, these aspects are provided so that the present disclosure will become comprehensive and complete, and these aspects will fully convey the scope of the present disclosure to those skilled in the art. Based on the teachings of this article, it should be understood by those skilled in the art that the scope of the present disclosure is intended to cover any aspect of the present disclosure disclosed herein, whether it is realized independently of any other aspect of the present disclosure or realized in combination with any other aspect of the present disclosure. For example, any number of aspects set forth herein can be used to implement a device or practice method. In addition, the scope of the present disclosure is intended to cover such a device or method practiced using other structures, functions, or structures and functions other than the various aspects of the present disclosure set forth herein or different from the various aspects of the present disclosure set forth herein. It should be understood that any aspect of the present disclosure disclosed herein can be implemented by one or more elements of the claim.

[0183] Several aspects of telecommunication systems will now be presented with reference to various devices and techniques. These devices and techniques will be described in the following detailed description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings by various blocks, modules, components, circuits, steps, processes, algorithms, etc. (collectively referred to as "elements"). These elements may be implemented using hardware, software, or a combination thereof. Whether such elements are implemented as hardware or software depends on the specific application and the design constraints imposed on the overall system.

[0184] It should be noted that although various aspects may be described herein using terminology generally associated with 3G and / or 4G wireless technologies, various aspects of the present disclosure may be applicable in communication systems based on other generations, such as 5G and later generations, including NR technology.

[0185] Figure 1 is a diagram illustrating a wireless network 100 in which various aspects of the present disclosure may be practiced. The wireless network 100 may be an LTE network or some other wireless network, such as a 5G or NR network. The wireless network 100 may include a plurality of BSs 110 (shown as BS 110a, BS 110b, BS 110c, and BS 110d) and other network entities. A BS is an entity that communicates with a user equipment (UE), and it may also be referred to as a base station, NR BS, Node B, gNB, 5G Node B (NB), access point, transmit receive point (TRP), etc. Each BS may provide communication coverage for a specific geographic area. In 3GPP, the term "cell" may refer to a coverage area of a BS and / or a BS subsystem serving this coverage area, depending on the context in which the term is used.

[0186] A BS may provide communication coverage for macro cells, pico cells, femto cells, and / or other types of cells. A macro cell may cover a relatively large geographic area (e.g., a radius of several kilometers) and may allow unrestricted access by UEs with service subscriptions. A pico cell may cover a relatively small geographic area and may allow unrestricted access by UEs with service subscriptions. A femto cell may cover a relatively small geographic area (e.g., a home) and may allow restricted access by UEs associated with the femto cell (e.g., UEs in a Closed Subscriber Group (CSG)). The BS of a macro cell may be referred to as a macro BS. The BS of a pico cell may be referred to as a pico BS. The BS of a femto cell may be referred to as a femto BS or a home BS. In Figure 1 In the example shown, BS 110a may be a macro BS of macro cell 102a, BS 110b may be a pico BS of pico cell 102b, and BS 110c may be a femto BS of femto cell 102c. A BS may support one or more (e.g., three) cells. The terms "eNB", "base station", "NR BS", "gNB", "TRP", "AP", "Node B", "5G NB", and "cell" may be used interchangeably herein.

[0187] In some aspects, the cell may not necessarily be fixed, and the geographic area of the cell may move depending on the location of the mobile BS. In some aspects, the BSs may be interconnected with each other and / or with one or more other BSs or network nodes (not shown) in the wireless network 100 via various types of backhaul interfaces (such as direct physical connections, virtual networks, and / or similar interfaces using any suitable transport networks).

[0188] The wireless network 100 may also include a relay station. A relay station is an entity that can receive transmissions of data from an upstream station (e.g., a BS or a UE) and transmit transmissions of data to a downstream station (e.g., a UE or a BS). A relay station may also be a UE that can relay transmissions for other UEs. Figure 1 In the example shown, a relay station 110d may communicate with a macro BS 110a and a UE 120d to facilitate communication between the BS 110a and the UE 120d. A relay station may also be referred to as a relay BS, a relay base station, a relay, or the like.

[0189] The wireless network 100 may be a heterogeneous network including different types of BSs (e.g., macro BSs, pico BSs, femto BSs, relay BSs, etc.). These different types of BSs may have different transmit power levels, different coverage areas, and different effects on interference in the wireless network 100. For example, a macro BS may have a high transmit power level (e.g., 5 to 40 watts), while a pico BS, a femto BS, and a relay BS may have a lower transmit power level (e.g., 0.1 to 2 watts).

[0190] A network controller 130 may be coupled to a set of BSs and may provide coordination and control for these BSs. The network controller 130 may communicate with the BSs via a backhaul. The BSs may also communicate with each other (eg, directly or indirectly via a wireless or wired backhaul).

[0191] UE 120 (e.g., 120a, 120b, 120c) can be dispersed throughout the wireless network 100, and each UE can be fixed or mobile. UE can also be referred to as an access terminal, terminal, mobile station, subscriber unit, station, etc. UE can be a cellular phone (e.g., a smart phone), a personal digital assistant (PDA), a wireless modem, a wireless communication device, a handheld device, a laptop computer, a cordless phone, a wireless local loop (WLL) station, a tablet computer, a camera, a gaming device, a netbook, a smart book, an ultrabook, a medical device or apparatus, a biosensor / device, a wearable device (smart watch, smart clothing, smart glasses, smart wristband, smart jewelry (e.g., smart ring, smart bracelet)), an entertainment device (e.g., a music or video device, or a satellite radio), a vehicle component or sensor, a smart meter / sensor, an industrial manufacturing device, a global positioning system device, or any other suitable device configured to communicate via a wireless or wired medium.

[0192] Some UEs may be considered as machine type communication (MTC) or evolved or enhanced machine type communication (eMTC) UEs. For example, MTC and eMTC UEs include robots, drones, remote devices (such as sensors, meters, monitors, location tags), etc. that can communicate with a base station, another device (e.g., a remote device), or some other entity. For example, a wireless node may provide connectivity for a network or to a network (e.g., a wide area network such as the Internet or a cellular network) via a wired or wireless communication link. Some UEs may be considered as Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and / or may be implemented as NB-IoT (narrowband Internet of Things) devices. Some UEs may be considered as customer premise equipment (CPE). UE 120 may be included inside a housing that houses components of UE 120 (such as a processor component, a memory component, etc.).

[0193] Generally, any number of wireless networks can be deployed in a given geographic area. Each wireless network can support a specific RAT and can operate on one or more frequencies. RAT can also be referred to as radio technology, air interface, etc. Frequency can also be referred to as carrier, channel, etc. In a given geographic area, each frequency can support a single RAT to avoid interference between wireless networks of different RATs. In some cases, NR or 5G RAT networks can be deployed.

[0194] In some aspects, two or more UEs 120 (e.g., shown as UE 120a and UE 120e) may communicate directly using one or more sidelink channels (e.g., without using base station 110 as an intermediary for communicating with each other). For example, UE 120 may communicate using peer-to-peer (P2P) communication, device-to-device (D2D) communication, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) protocols (e.g., which may include vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) protocols, vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) protocols, etc.), mesh networks, etc. In this case, UE 120 may perform scheduling operations, resource selection operations, and / or other operations described elsewhere herein as being performed by base station 110.

[0195] The devices of the wireless network 100 may communicate using an electromagnetic spectrum, which may be subdivided into various categories, frequency bands, channels, etc. based on frequency or wavelength. For example, the devices of the wireless network 100 may communicate using an operating frequency band having a first frequency range (FR1), which may range from 410 MHz to 7.125 GHz, and / or may communicate using an operating frequency band having a second frequency range (FR2), which may range from 24.25 GHz to 52.6 GHz. Frequencies between FR1 and FR2 are sometimes referred to as mid-band frequencies. Although a portion of FR1 is greater than 6 GHz, FR1 is often referred to as a "sub-6 GHz" band. Similarly, FR2 is often referred to as a "millimeter wave" band, although it is different from the extremely high frequency (EHF) band (30 GHz-300 GHz) recognized as a "millimeter wave" band by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Therefore, if used herein, unless otherwise expressly stated, it should be understood that the term "sub-6 GHz" and the like can broadly refer to frequencies less than 6 GHz, frequencies within FR1, and / or mid-band frequencies (e.g., greater than 7.125 GHz). Similarly, if used herein, unless otherwise expressly stated, it should be understood that the term "millimeter wave" and the like can broadly refer to frequencies within the EHF band, frequencies within FR2, and / or mid-band frequencies (e.g., less than 24.25 GHz). It is contemplated that the frequencies included in FR1 and FR2 can be modified, and the techniques described herein are applicable to those modified frequency ranges.

[0196] As shown above, Figure 1 Other examples can be found in the Figure 1 Different than described.

[0197] Figure 2 A block diagram of a design 200 of a base station 110 and a UE 120 is shown, which may be Figure 1 BS 110 may be equipped with T antennas 234a through 234t, and UE 120 may be equipped with R antennas 252a through 252r, where in general T≥1 and R≥1.

[0198] At the base station 110, the transmit processor 220 may receive data for one or more UEs from the data source 212, select one or more modulation and coding schemes (MCS) for each UE based at least in part on a channel quality indicator (CQI) received from the UE, process (e.g., encode and modulate) the data for each UE based at least in part on the (multiple) MCS selected for the UE, and provide data symbols for all UEs. The transmit processor 220 may also process system information (e.g., for semi-static resource partitioning information (SRPI), etc.) and control information (e.g., CQI requests, grants, upper layer signaling, etc.), and provide overhead symbols and control symbols. The transmit processor 220 may also generate reference symbols for reference signals (e.g., cell-specific reference signals (CRS)) and synchronization signals (e.g., primary synchronization signals (PSS) and secondary synchronization signals (SSS)). The transmit (TX) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) processor 230 may perform spatial processing (e.g., precoding) on data symbols, control symbols, overhead symbols, and / or reference symbols, if applicable, and may provide T output symbol streams to T modulators (MOD) 232a to 232t. Each modulator 232 may process a corresponding output symbol stream (e.g., for OFDM, etc.) to obtain an output sample stream. Each modulator 232 may also process (e.g., convert to analog, amplify, filter, and up-convert) the output sample stream to obtain a downlink signal. T downlink signals from modulators 232a to 232t may be transmitted via T antennas 234a to 234t, respectively. According to various aspects described in more detail below, a synchronization signal may be generated using location coding to convey additional information.

[0199] At the UE 120, antennas 252a to 252r may receive downlink signals from the base station 110 and / or other base stations, and may provide received signals to demodulators (DEMODs) 254a to 254r, respectively. Each demodulator 254 may condition (e.g., filter, amplify, downconvert, and digitize) the received signal to obtain input samples. Each demodulator 254 may also process the input samples (e.g., for OFDM, etc.) to obtain received symbols. The MIMO detector 256 may obtain received symbols from all R demodulators 254a to 254r, perform MIMO detection on the received symbols (if applicable), and provide detected symbols. The receive processor 258 may process (e.g., demodulate and decode) the detected symbols, provide decoded data for the UE 120 to the data sink 260, and provide decoded control information and system information to the controller / processor 280. The channel processor may determine reference signal received power (RSRP), received signal strength indicator (RSSI), reference signal received quality (RSRQ), channel quality indicator (CQI), etc. In some aspects, one or more components of UE 120 may be included in a housing.

[0200] On the uplink, at the UE 120, a transmit processor 264 may receive and process data from a data source 262 and control information from a controller / processor 280 (e.g., for reports including RSRP, RSSI, RSRQ, CQI, etc.). The transmit processor 264 may also generate reference symbols for one or more reference signals. The symbols from the transmit processor 264 may be precoded by a TX MIMO processor 266 (if applicable), further processed by modulators 254a through 254r (e.g., for DFT-s-OFDM, CP-OFDM, etc.), and transmitted to the base station 110. At the base station 110, uplink signals from the UE 120 and other UEs may be received by the antenna 234, processed by the demodulator 232, detected by the MIMO detector 236 (if applicable), and further processed by the receive processor 238 to obtain decoded data and control information transmitted by the UE 120. The receive processor 238 may provide decoded data to a data sink 239 and decoded control information to a controller / processor 240. The base station 110 may include a communication unit 244 and communicate with the network controller 130 via the communication unit 244. [0206] As shown above, Figure 2 Other examples can be found in the Figure 2 Different than described.

[0207] Figure 3is a diagram illustrating an example beamforming architecture 300 that supports determining suboptimal clusters in a millimeter wave (mmW) channel in accordance with the present disclosure. In some aspects, the architecture 300 can implement aspects of the wireless network 100. In some aspects, the architecture 300 can be implemented in a transmitting device (e.g., a first wireless communication device, UE, or base station) and / or a receiving device (e.g., a second wireless communication device, UE, or base station), as described herein.

[0208] Broadly speaking, Figure 3 300 is a diagram illustrating example hardware components of a wireless communication device according to certain aspects of the present disclosure. The components shown may include components that can be used for antenna element selection and / or for beamforming for wireless signal transmission. There are a variety of architectures for antenna element selection and implementing phase shifting, only one example of which is shown here. Architecture 300 includes a modem (modulator / demodulator) 302, a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) 304, a first mixer 306, a second mixer 308, and a splitter 310. Architecture 300 also includes a plurality of first amplifiers 312, a plurality of phase shifters 314, a plurality of second amplifiers 316, and an antenna array 318 including a plurality of antenna elements 320.

[0209] Transmission lines or other waveguides, wires, traces, etc. are shown connecting various components to illustrate how signals to be transmitted can propagate between components. Reference numerals 322, 324, 326, and 328 indicate areas in the architecture 300 where different types of signals propagate or are processed. Specifically, reference numeral 322 indicates an area in which digital baseband signals propagate or are processed, reference numeral 324 indicates an area in which analog baseband signals propagate or are processed, reference numeral 326 indicates an area in which analog intermediate frequency (IF) signals propagate or are processed, and reference numeral 328 indicates an area in which analog radio frequency (RF) signals propagate or are processed. The architecture also includes a local oscillator A 330, a local oscillator B 332, and a processor 334.

[0210] Each antenna element 320 may include one or more sub-elements for transmitting or receiving RF signals. For example, a single antenna element 320 may include a first sub-element that is orthogonally polarized with a second sub-element that can be used to independently transmit a cross-polarized signal. The antenna element 320 may include a patch antenna, a dipole antenna, or other types of antennas arranged in a linear pattern, a two-dimensional pattern, or other patterns. The spacing between the antenna elements 320 may be such that signals having a desired wavelength transmitted individually by the antenna elements 320 may interact or interfere (e.g., to form a desired beam). For example, given an expected range of wavelengths or frequencies, the spacing may provide a quarter wavelength, half a wavelength, or other fraction of a wavelength of the spacing between adjacent antenna elements 320 to allow interaction or interference of signals transmitted by separate antenna elements 320 within the expected range.

[0211] The modem 302 processes and generates digital baseband signals, and may also control the operation of the DAC 304, the first and second mixers 306, 308, the splitter 310, the first amplifier 312, the phase shifter 314, and / or the second amplifier 316 to transmit signals via one or more or all of the antenna elements 320. The modem 302 may process signals and control operations according to a communication standard such as the wireless standard discussed herein. The DAC 304 may convert the digital baseband signal received from the modem 302 (and to be transmitted) into an analog baseband signal. The first mixer 306 uses the local oscillator A 330 to up-convert the analog baseband signal into an analog IF signal within the IF. For example, the first mixer 306 may mix the signal with an oscillating signal generated by the local oscillator A 330 to "move" the baseband analog signal to the IF. In some cases, some processing or filtering (not shown) may occur on the IF. The second mixer 308 uses the local oscillator B 332 to up-convert the analog IF signal into an analog RF signal. Similar to the first mixer, the second mixer 308 can mix the signal with an oscillating signal generated by the local oscillator B 332 to "move" the IF analog signal to the RF or frequency at which the signal will be transmitted or received. The modem 302 and / or the processor 334 can adjust the frequency of the local oscillator A 330 and / or the local oscillator B 332 in order to generate and use the desired IF and / or RF frequencies to facilitate the processing and transmission of signals within the desired bandwidth.

[0212] In the illustrated architecture 300, the signal up-converted by the second mixer 308 is split or copied into multiple signals by the splitter 310. The splitter 310 in the architecture 300 splits the RF signal into multiple identical or nearly identical RF signals. In other examples, any type of signal can be split, including baseband digital, baseband analog or IF analog signals. Each of these signals can correspond to an antenna element 320, and the signal propagates through amplifiers 312, 316, phase shifters 314 and / or other elements corresponding to the corresponding antenna element 320 and is processed by them to be provided to the corresponding antenna element 320 of the antenna array 318 and transmitted by it. In one example, the splitter 310 can be an active splitter connected to a power source and providing a certain gain so that the RF signal leaving the splitter 310 is at a power level equal to or greater than the signal entering the splitter 310. In another example, the splitter 310 is a passive splitter not connected to a power source, and the RF signal leaving the splitter 310 may be at a power level lower than the RF signal entering the splitter 310.

[0213] After being split by the splitter 310, the resulting RF signal may enter an amplifier (such as the first amplifier 312), or enter a phase shifter 314 corresponding to the antenna element 320. The first amplifier 312 and the second amplifier 316 are shown with dashed lines because one or both of them may not be necessary in some aspects. In some aspects, both the first amplifier 312 and the second amplifier 316 exist. In some aspects, neither the first amplifier 312 nor the second amplifier 316 exists. In some aspects, one of the two amplifiers 312, 316 exists, but the other does not exist. For example, if the splitter 310 is an active splitter, the first amplifier 312 may not be used. As a further example, if the phase shifter 314 is an active phase shifter that can provide gain, the second amplifier 316 may not be used.

[0214] The amplifiers 312, 316 can provide a desired level of positive gain or negative gain. Positive gain (positive dB) can be used to increase the amplitude of the signal transmitted by a particular antenna element 320. Negative gain (negative dB) can be used to reduce the amplitude and / or suppress the transmission of the signal of a particular antenna element. Each of the amplifiers 312, 316 can be independently controlled (e.g., by the modem 302 or the processor 334) to provide independent control of the gain of each antenna element 320. For example, the modem 302 and / or the processor 334 can have at least one control line connected to each of the splitter 310, the first amplifier 312, the phase shifter 314, and / or the second amplifier 316, which can be used to configure the gain to provide a desired amount of gain for each component and thereby for each antenna element 320.

[0215] The phase shifter 314 can provide a configurable phase shift or phase offset to the corresponding RF signal to be transmitted. The phase shifter 314 can be a passive phase shifter that is not directly connected to the power supply. The passive phase shifter may introduce some insertion loss. The second amplifier 316 can enhance the signal to compensate for the insertion loss. The phase shifter 314 can be an active phase shifter connected to the power supply so that the active phase shifter provides a certain amount of gain or prevents insertion loss. The setting of each phase shifter 314 is independent, which means that each phase shifter can be set to provide a desired amount of phase shift or the same amount of phase shift or some other configuration. The modem 302 and / or the processor 334 can have at least one control line connected to each phase shifter 314, and the control line can be used to configure the phase shifter 314 to provide a desired amount of phase shift or phase offset between the antenna elements 320.

[0216] In the illustrated architecture 300, the RF signal received by the antenna element 320 is provided to one or more of the first amplifiers 356 to enhance the signal strength. The first amplifiers 356 can be connected to the same antenna array 318 (e.g., for time division duplex (TDD) operation). The first amplifiers 356 can be connected to different antenna arrays 318. The enhanced RF signal is input to one or more of the phase shifters 354 to provide a configurable phase shift or phase offset for the corresponding received RF signal. The phase shifter 354 can be an active phase shifter or a passive phase shifter. The settings of the phase shifters 354 are independent, which means that each phase shifter can be set to provide a desired phase shift amount or the same phase shift amount or some other configuration. The modem 302 and / or the processor 334 can have at least one control line connected to each phase shifter 354, and the control line can be used to configure the phase shifter 354 to provide a desired amount of phase shift or phase offset between the antenna elements 320.

[0217] The output of phase shifter 354 can be input to one or more second amplifiers 352 for signal amplification of the received RF signal after phase shifting. Second amplifier 352 can be configured separately to provide a configured amount of gain. Second amplifier 352 can be configured separately to provide a certain amount of gain to ensure that the signals input to combiner 350 have the same amplitude. Amplifiers 352 and / or 356 are shown in dotted lines because they may not be necessary in some aspects. In some aspects, amplifier 352 and amplifier 356 are both present. On the other hand, amplifier 352 and amplifier 356 are not present. In other aspects, there is one of amplifiers 352, 356 but not the other.

[0218] In the illustrated architecture 300, the signals output by the phase shifter 354 are combined (via the amplifier 352 (when present)) in the combiner 350. The combiner 350 in the architecture 300 combines the RF signals into one signal. The combiner 350 can be a passive combiner (e.g., not connected to a power source), which may result in some insertion loss. The combiner 350 can be an active combiner (e.g., connected to a power source), which can produce some signal gain. When the combiner 350 is an active combiner, it can provide a different (e.g., configurable) amount of gain for each input signal so that the input signals have the same amplitude when combined. When the combiner 350 is an active combiner, the combiner 350 may not need a second amplifier 352, because the active combiner can provide signal amplification.

[0219] The output of combiner 350 is input to mixers 348 and 346. Mixers 348 and 346 typically down-convert the received RF signal using inputs from local oscillators 372 and 370, respectively, to produce intermediate or baseband signals carrying coded and modulated information. The outputs of mixers 348 and 346 are input to analog-to-digital converter (ADC) 344 for conversion to analog signals. The analog signals output from ADC 344 are input to modem 302 for baseband processing, such as decoding, deinterleaving, etc.

[0220] Architecture 300 is given as an example only to illustrate an architecture for sending and / or receiving signals. In some cases, architecture 300 and / or each part of architecture 300 can be repeated multiple times within the architecture to accommodate or provide any number of RF chains, antenna elements and / or antenna panels. In addition, many alternative architectures are also possible and can be considered. For example, although only a single antenna array 318 is shown, two, three or more antenna arrays may be included, each with their own corresponding amplifiers, phase shifters, splitters, mixers, DACs, ADCs and / or modems. One or more. For example, a single UE may include two, four or more antenna arrays for sending or receiving signals at different physical locations on the UE or in different directions.

[0221] In addition, mixers, splitters, amplifiers, phase shifters and other components can be located in different signal type areas (e.g., represented by different reference numerals 322, 324, 326, 328) in different implementation architectures. For example, in different examples, the signal to be transmitted can be divided into multiple signals at analog RF, analog IF, analog baseband or digital baseband frequencies. Similarly, amplification and / or phase shifting may also occur at different frequencies. For example, in some aspects, one or more of the splitter 310, amplifiers 312, 316 or phase shifters 314 can be located between the DAC 304 and the first mixer 306 or between the first mixer 306 and the second mixer 308. In one example, the functions of one or more of the components can be combined into one component. For example, the phase shifter 314 can perform amplification to include or replace the first amplifier 312 and / or the second amplifier 316. As another example, the phase shift can be implemented by the second mixer 308 to eliminate the need for a separate phase shifter 314. This technique is sometimes referred to as local oscillator (LO) phase shifting. In some aspects of this configuration, there may be multiple IF-to-RF mixers within the second mixer 308 (eg, for each antenna element chain), and the local oscillator B 332 may provide a different local oscillator signal (with a different phase offset) to each IF-to-RF mixer.

[0222] The modem 302 and / or the processor 334 can control one or more of the other components 304 to 372 to select one or more antenna elements 320 and / or form a beam for transmitting one or more signals. For example, the antenna element 320 for transmitting a signal (or multiple signals) can be individually selected or deselected by controlling the amplitude of one or more corresponding amplifiers (such as the first amplifier 312 and / or the second amplifier 316). Beamforming includes generating a beam using multiple signals on different antenna elements, wherein one or more or all of the multiple signals are offset in phase relative to each other. The formed beam can carry a reference signal or information of the physical layer or higher layers. When each of the multiple signals is transmitted from the corresponding antenna element 320, the transmitted signals interact, interfere (constructively and destructively), and amplify each other to form the resulting beam. The shape (such as the amplitude, width, and / or presence of side lobes) and direction (such as the angle of the beam relative to the surface of the antenna array 318) may be dynamically controlled by modifying the offset or phase shift imparted by the phase shifter 314 of the multiple signals relative to each other and the amplitude imparted by the amplifiers 312, 316. The processor 334 may be partially or fully located within one or more other components of the architecture 300. For example, in some aspects, the processor 334 may be located within the modem 302.

[0223] As shown above, Figure 3Other examples can be found in the Figure 3 Different than described.

[0224] Figure 4 An example logical architecture of a distributed RAN 400 is illustrated in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure.

[0225] The 5G access node 405 may include an access node controller 410. The access node controller 410 may be a central unit (CU) of the distributed RAN 400. In some aspects, a backhaul interface to the 5G core network 415 may terminate at the access node controller 410. The 5G core network 415 may include a 5G control plane component 420 and a 5G user plane component 425 (e.g., a 5G gateway), and the backhaul interface for one or both of the 5G control plane and the 5G user plane may terminate at the access node controller 410. Additionally or alternatively, a backhaul interface to one or more neighboring access nodes 430 (e.g., another 5G access node 405, an LTE access node, etc.) may terminate at the access node controller 410.

[0226] The access node controller 410 may include and / or may communicate with one or more TRPs 435 (e.g., via an F1 control (F1-C) interface and / or an F1 user (F1-U) interface). The TRP 435 may be a distributed unit (DU) of the distributed RAN 400. In some aspects, the TRP 435 may correspond to the above in conjunction with Figure 1 The base station 110 described. For example, different TRPs 435 may be included in different base stations 110. Additionally or alternatively, multiple TRPs 435 may be included in a single base station 110. In some aspects, the base station 110 may include a CU (e.g., an access node controller 410) and / or one or more DUs (e.g., one or more TRPs 435). In some cases, a TRP 435 may be referred to as a cell, a panel, an antenna array, an array, etc. In some aspects, different TRPs 435 may be associated with different physical cell identifiers (PCIs). Different TRPs 435 and / or different PCIs may be associated with the same serving cell (e.g., the same base station 110, the same 5G access node 405, the same access node controller 410, the same cell identifier, etc.).

[0227] The TRP 435 may be connected to a single access node controller 410 or to multiple access node controllers 410. In some aspects, there may be a dynamic configuration of split logic functions within the architecture of the distributed RAN 400. For example, a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer, a radio link control (RLC) layer, a medium access control (MAC) layer, etc. may be configured to terminate at an access node controller 410 or a TRP 435.

[0228] In some aspects, multiple TRPs 435 may transmit communications (e.g., the same communication or different communications) in the same transmission time interval (TTI) (e.g., time slot, mini-slot, subframe, symbol, etc.) or in different TTIs using different quasi-co-location (QCL) relationships (e.g., different spatial parameters, different transmission configuration indicator (TCI) states, different precoding parameters, different beamforming parameters, etc.). In some aspects, the TCI state may be used to indicate one or more QCL relationships. A TRP 435 may be configured to provide services to a UE 120 individually (e.g., using dynamic selection) or jointly (e.g., using joint transmission with one or more other TRPs 435).

[0229] As shown above, Figure 4 Other examples can be found in the Figure 4 Different than described.

[0230] Figure 5 is a diagram illustrating an example 500 of multi-TRP communication (sometimes referred to as multi-panel communication) according to the present disclosure. Figure 5 As shown, multiple TRPs 505 can communicate with the same UE 120. TRP 505 can correspond to the above combined Figure 4 TRP 435 as described.

[0231] Multiple TRPs 505 (shown as TRP A and TRP B) can communicate with the same UE 120 in a coordinated manner (e.g., using coordinated multi-point transmission, etc.) to improve reliability, increase throughput, etc. The TRPs 505 can coordinate such communication via an interface between the TRPs 505 (e.g., a backhaul interface, an access node controller 410, etc.). When the TRPs 505 are co-located at the same base station 110 (e.g., when the TRPs 505 are different antenna arrays or panels of the same base station 110), the interface can have less latency and / or higher capacity, and when the TRPs 505 are located at different base stations 110, there may be greater latency and / or lower capacity (compared to co-location). Different TRPs 505 can communicate with the UE 120 using different QCL relationships (e.g., different TCI states), different demodulation reference signal (DMRS) ports, different layers (e.g., different layers of multi-layer communication), etc.

[0232] In a first multi-TRP transmission mode (e.g., Mode 1), a single physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) can be used to schedule downlink data communications for a single physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH). In this case, multiple TRPs 505 (e.g., TRP A and TRP B) can send communications to UE 120 on the same PDSCH. For example, for different TRPs 505, communications can be sent using a single codeword with different spatial layers (e.g., where one codeword is mapped to a first set of layers sent by a first TRP 505 and is mapped to a second set of layers sent by a second TRP 505). As another example, communications can be sent using multiple codewords, where different codewords are sent by different TRPs 505 (e.g., using different sets of layers). In either case, different TRPs 505 can use different QCL relationships (e.g., different TCI states) for different DMRS ports corresponding to different layers. For example, the first TRP 505 may use a first QCL relationship or a first TCI state for a first DMRS port set corresponding to a first layer set, and the second TRP 505 may use a second (different) QCL relationship or a second (different) TCI state for a second (different) DMRS port set corresponding to a second (different) layer set. In some aspects, the TCI state in the downlink control information (DCI) (e.g., sent on the PDCCH, such as DCI format 1_0, DCI format 1_1, etc.) may indicate a first QCL relationship (e.g., by indicating a first TCI state) and a second QCL relationship (e.g., by indicating a second TCI state). The first TCI state and the second TCI state may be indicated using a TCI field in the DCI. Typically, the TCI field may indicate a single TCI state (for single TRP transmission) or multiple TCI states (for multi-TRP transmission discussed herein) in such a multi-TRP transmission mode (e.g., mode 1).

[0233] In a second multi-TRP transmission mode (e.g., mode 2), multiple PDCCHs may be used to schedule downlink data communications for multiple corresponding PDSCHs (e.g., one PDCCH for each PDSCH). In this case, a first PDCCH may schedule a first codeword sent by a first TRP 505, and a second PDCCH may schedule a second codeword sent by a second TRP 505. In addition, for the first TRP 505, a first DCI (e.g., sent by the first TRP 505) may schedule a first PDSCH communication associated with a first DMRS port set having a first QCL relationship (e.g., indicated by a first TCI state), and for the second TRP 505, a second DCI (e.g., sent by the second TRP 505) may schedule a second PDSCH communication associated with a second DMRS port set having a second QCL relationship (e.g., indicated by a second TCI state). In this case, a DCI (e.g., having a DCI format 1_0, a DCI format 1_1, etc.) may indicate a corresponding TCI state of the TRP 505 corresponding to the DCI. The TCI field of the DCI indicates a corresponding TCI state (eg, the TCI field of the first DCI indicates a first TCI state, and the TCI field of the second DCI indicates a second TCI state).

[0234] In some aspects, different TRPs 505 may be associated with different PCIs of the same serving cell. Additionally or alternatively, different TRPs 505 may use different beam pairs (e.g., UE Tx beam and corresponding TRP or base station Rx beam, UE Rx beam and corresponding TRP or base station Tx beam, etc.) to communicate with UE 120. In some aspects, a serving cell may associate multiple synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) with a TRP 505, as described below in conjunction with Figure 6 When the serving cells use different PCIs, the serving cells may divide multiple SSBs between different TRPs 505 so that different PCIs do not share SSBs. The division of SSBs between different TRPs 505 may result in suboptimal selection of beams for communicating with UE 120, for example, as described below in conjunction with Figures 7 and 8 The RACH process described.

[0235] As shown above, Figure 5 Other examples can be found in the Figure 5 Different than described.

[0236] Figure 6 6 is a diagram illustrating an example 600 of a synchronization signal (SS) hierarchy according to the present disclosure. Figure 6As shown, the SS hierarchy may include an SS burst set 605, which may include multiple SS bursts 610, shown as SS burst 0 to SS burst N-1, where N is the maximum number of repetitions of the SS burst 610 that can be sent by the base station. As further shown, each SS burst 610 may include one or more SS blocks (SSBs) 615, shown as SSB 0 to SSB M-1, where M is the maximum number of SSBs 615 that can be carried by the SS burst 610. In some aspects, different SSBs 615 may be beamformed differently (e.g., transmitted using different beams) and may be used for beam management, beam selection, etc. (e.g., as part of an initial network access procedure). The SS burst set 605 may be sent by a wireless node (e.g., base station 110) periodically, for example, every X milliseconds, as shown. Figure 6 In some aspects, the SS burst set 605 may have a fixed or dynamic length. Figure 6 In some cases, SS burst set 605 or SS burst 610 may be referred to as a discovery reference signal (DRS) transmission window, an SSB measurement time configuration (SMTC) window, or the like.

[0237] In some aspects, the SSB 615 may include resources that carry a primary synchronization signal (PSS) 620, a secondary synchronization signal (SSS) 625, a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) 630, and the like. In some aspects, multiple SSBs 615 are included in the SS burst 610 (e.g., transmitted on different beams), and the PSS 620, SSS 625, and / or PBCH 630 may be the same on each SSB 615 of the SS burst 610. In some aspects, a single SSB 615 may be included in the SS burst 610. In some aspects, the SSB 615 may be at least four symbols (e.g., OFDM symbols) in length, wherein each symbol carries one or more of the PSS 620 (e.g., occupying one symbol), the SSS 625 (e.g., occupying one symbol), and / or the PBCH 630 (e.g., occupying two symbols). In some aspects, the SSB 615 may be referred to as an SS / PBCH block.

[0238] In some aspects, the symbols of SSB 615 are consecutive, such as Figure 6 As shown. In some aspects, the symbols of the SSB 615 are non-contiguous. Similarly, in some aspects, one or more SSBs 615 of the SS burst 610 may be sent in contiguous radio resources (e.g., consecutive symbols) during one or more time slots. Additionally or alternatively, one or more SSBs 615 of the SS burst 610 may be sent in non-contiguous radio resources.

[0239] In some aspects, the SS burst 610 may have a burst periodicity, and the SSB 615 of the SS burst 610 may be sent by a wireless node (e.g., base station 110) according to the burst periodicity. In this case, the SSB 615 may be repeated during each SS burst 610. In some aspects, the SS burst set 605 may have a burst set periodicity, such that the SS bursts 610 in the SS burst set 605 are sent by the wireless node according to a fixed burst set periodicity. In other words, the SS burst 610 may be repeated during each SS burst set 605.

[0240] In some aspects, the SSB 615 may include an SSB index, which may correspond to a beam used to carry the SSB 615. The UE 120 may monitor and / or measure the SSB 615 using different receive (Rx) beams during an initial network access procedure. Based at least in part on the monitoring and / or measurement, the UE 120 may indicate to the base station 110 one or more SSBs 615 having the best signal parameters (e.g., reference signal received power (RSRP) parameters, etc.). The base station 110 and the UE 120 may use the one or more indicated SSBs 615 to select one or more beams to be used for communication between the base station 110 and the UE 120 (e.g., for a random access channel (RACH) procedure, etc.). Additionally or alternatively, the UE 120 may use the SSB 615 and / or the SSB index to determine the cell timing of a cell (e.g., a serving cell) via which the SSB 615 is received.

[0241] As shown above, Figure 6 Other examples can be found in the Figure 6 Different than described.

[0242] Figure 7 is a diagram illustrating an example of a four-step random access procedure according to the present disclosure. Figure 7 As shown, base station 110 and UE 120 may communicate with each other to perform a four-step random access procedure.

[0243] As indicated by reference numeral 705, the base station 110 may send and the UE 120 may receive one or more SSBs and random access configuration information. In some aspects, the random access configuration information may be sent and / or indicated by system information (e.g., in one or more system information blocks (SIBs), etc.) and / or SSBs, such as for contention-based random access. Additionally or alternatively, the random access configuration information may be transmitted in a radio resource control (RRC) message and / or a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) command message that triggers a RACH procedure, such as for contention-free random access. The random access configuration information may include one or more parameters to be used in a random access procedure, such as one or more parameters for sending a random access message, one or more parameters for receiving a RAR, etc.

[0244] As shown by reference numeral 710, UE 120 may send a random access message, which may include a preamble (sometimes referred to as a random access preamble, a PRACH preamble, etc.). The message including the preamble may be referred to as message 1 in a four-step random access procedure, msg1, MSG1, a first message, an initial message, etc. The random access message may include a random access preamble identifier.

[0245] As indicated by reference numeral 715, the base station 110 may send a RAR as a reply to the preamble. The message including the RAR may be referred to as message 2, msg2, MSG2, or a second message in the four-step random access procedure. In some aspects, the RAR may indicate a detected random access preamble identifier (e.g., received from the UE 120 in msg1). Additionally or alternatively, the RAR may indicate a resource allocation to be used by the UE 120 to send message 3 (msg3).

[0246] In some aspects, as part of the second step of the four-step random access procedure, the base station 110 may send a PDCCH communication for the RAR. The PDCCH communication may schedule a PDSCH communication including the RAR. For example, the PDCCH communication may indicate a resource allocation for the PDSCH communication. Also as part of the second step of the four-step random access procedure, the base station 110 may send a PDSCH communication for the RAR, as scheduled by the PDCCH communication. The RAR may be included in the MAC PDU of the PDSCH communication.

[0247] As indicated by reference numeral 720, UE 120 may send an RRC connection request message. The RRC connection request message may be referred to as message 3, msg3, MSG3, or the third message of the four-step random access procedure. In some aspects, the RRC connection request may include a UE identifier, UCI, PUSCH communication (e.g., RRC connection request), etc.

[0248] As indicated by reference numeral 725, the base station 110 may send an RRC connection setup message. The RRC connection setup message may be referred to as message 4, msg4, MSG4, or a fourth message of the four-step random access procedure. In some aspects, the RRC connection setup message may include a detected UE identifier, a timing advance value, contention resolution information, etc. As indicated by reference numeral 730, if the UE 120 successfully receives the RRC connection setup message, the UE 120 may send a HARQ ACK.

[0249] In some aspects, base station 110 and / or UE 120 may determine one or more optimal beams (and / or SSBs) for use in Figure 7 1. For example, base station 110 and / or UE 120 may determine the optimal beam (and / or SSB) for a particular RACH opportunity (RO) between base station 110 and / or UE 120 using a mapping such as defined in the 3GPP standard. However, if the serving cell uses multiple PCIs, base station 110 and / or UE 120 may have a limited subset of beams (and / or SSBs) from which to select the optimal beam (and / or SSB), depending on which PCI the base station 110 is using with the UE 120. Therefore, base station 110 and / or UE 120 may select a suboptimal beam (and / or SSB) based on the PCI being used.

[0250] As shown above, Figure 7 Other examples can be found in the Figure 7 Different than described.

[0251] Figure 8 8 is a diagram illustrating an example 800 of a two-step random access procedure according to the present disclosure. Figure 8 As shown, base station 110 and UE 120 may communicate with each other to perform a two-step random access procedure.

[0252] As indicated by reference numeral 805, the base station 110 may send and the UE 120 may receive one or more synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) and random access configuration information. In some aspects, the random access configuration information may be sent and / or indicated by system information (e.g., in one or more system information blocks (SIBs), etc.) and / or SSBs, such as for contention-based random access. Additionally or alternatively, the random access configuration information may be sent in a radio resource control (RRC) message and / or a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) command message that triggers a RACH procedure, such as for contention-free random access. The random access configuration information may include one or more parameters to be used in a two-step random access procedure, such as one or more parameters for sending a random access message, receiving a random access response (RAR) to the random access message, and the like.

[0253] As indicated by reference numeral 810, the UE 120 may send and the base station 110 may receive a random access message preamble. As indicated by reference numeral 815, the UE 120 may send and the base station 110 may receive a random access message payload. As shown, as part of the initial (or first) step of the two-step random access procedure, the UE 120 may send a random access message preamble and a random access message payload to the base station 110. In some aspects, the random access message may be referred to as message A, msgA, first message, initial message, etc. in the two-step random access procedure. In addition, in some aspects, the random access message preamble may be referred to as message A preamble, msgA preamble, preamble, physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble, etc., and the random access message payload may be referred to as message A payload, msgA payload, payload, etc. In some aspects, the random access message may include some or all of the contents of message 1 (msg1) and message 3 (msg3) of the four-step random access procedure, which will be described in more detail below. For example, the random access message preamble may include some or all of the contents of message 1 (e.g., a PRACH preamble), and the random access message payload may include some or all of the contents of message 3 (e.g., a UE identifier, uplink control information (UCI), a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) transmission, etc.).

[0254] As indicated by reference numeral 820, the base station 110 may receive the random access message preamble transmitted by the UE 120. If the base station 110 successfully receives and decodes the random access message preamble, the base station 110 may receive and decode the random access message payload.

[0255] As shown in the reference numeral 825, the base station 110 may send a RAR (sometimes referred to as a RAR message). As shown, the base station 110 may send a RAR message as part of the second step of the two-step random access procedure. In some aspects, the RAR message may be referred to as message B, msgB, or a second message in the two-step random access procedure. The RAR message may include some or all of the contents of message 2 (msg2) and message 4 (msg4) of the four-step random access procedure. For example, the RAR message may include a detected PRACH preamble identifier, a detected UE identifier, a timing advance value, contention resolution information, etc.

[0256] As shown at 830, as part of the second step of the two-step random access procedure, the base station 110 may send a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) communication for the RAR. The PDCCH communication may schedule a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) communication including the RAR. For example, the PDCCH communication may indicate (e.g., in downlink control information (DCI)) a resource allocation for the PDSCH communication.

[0257] As shown at 835, as part of the second step of the two-step random access procedure, the base station 110 may send a PDSCH communication for the RAR, as scheduled by the PDCCH communication. The RAR may be included in a medium access control (MAC) protocol data unit (PDU) of the PDSCH communication. As shown at 840, if the UE 120 successfully receives the RAR, the UE 120 may send a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) acknowledgment (ACK).

[0258] In some aspects, such as the above combined Figure 7 As explained, base station 110 and / or UE 120 may determine one or more optimal beams (and / or SSBs) for use in Figure 8 1. For example, base station 110 and / or UE 120 may determine the optimal beam (and / or SSB) for a particular RO between base station 110 and / or UE 120 using a mapping such as defined in the 3GPP standard.

[0259] As shown above, Figure 8 Other examples can be found in the Figure 8 Different than described.

[0260] Fig. 9 9 is a diagram illustrating an example 900 of an association between one or more downlink reference signals and a corresponding PCI associated with a serving cell according to the present disclosure. Fig. 9 As shown, the base station (gNB) can use multiple SSBs (in Fig. 9 In the example shown in Figure 1, three SSBs are shown. Fig. 9 In the example of , the base station uses multiple SSBs in multiple ROs with the UE. Additionally or alternatively, the base station can use multiple SSBs in multiple ROs with multiple UEs.

[0261] like Fig. 9 As further shown, the UE may send a random access message (also referred to as Msg1 or MsgA or "Msg1 / A") to the base station requesting a RO on a particular beam or SSB. Based at least in part on the random access message transmission, the UE monitors a RAR message (also referred to as Msg2 or MsgB or "Msg2 / B") from the base station during a RAR window (e.g., as defined in 3GPP specifications). When the UE does not detect a RAR message during the RAR window, the UE waits for a minimum gap after the RAR window expires and then retransmits the random access message.

[0262] To reduce RACH delay, the UE can retransmit the random access message before the RAR window expires. The retransmission of the random access message is also called beam scanning. To improve the reliability of beam scanning, the UE can use a different beam or SSB for each retransmission, such as Fig. 9 The SSB used for the random access message is associated with the PCI of the serving cell in which the base station operates, as shown in Fig. 9 As further shown in .

[0263] When a serving cell including a base station uses multiple PCIs, the base station attempts to avoid confusion with the PCI of a UE that is communicating with the base station. For example, PCI confusion may result in reduced quality and / or reliability of one or more RACHs between the UE and the base station, or even complete loss of communication on one or more RACHs. Therefore, the PCI is associated with a subset of the SSBs used within the serving cell, such that no SSB is associated with multiple PCIs. However, as described above in conjunction with Figures 7 and 8 As described, a base station and one or more UEs communicating with the base station can select a suboptimal SSB based on a subset of SSBs associated with a PCI used by the base station and the one or more UEs. Some techniques and apparatus described herein enable a base station to use beam scanning across PCIs, thereby allowing the full set or at least a larger subset of SSBs used in a serving cell to be used without PCI confusion. The beam scanning described herein can improve the quality and reliability of communication between a base station and a UE communicating in an RO.

[0264] As shown above, Fig. 9 Other examples can be found in the Fig. 9 Different than described.

[0265] Fig.10 1 is a diagram illustrating an example 1000 of RACH beam scanning across multiple PCIs of a serving cell according to the present disclosure. Fig.10 As shown, base station 110 and UE 120 can communicate with each other. Fig.10As further shown, base station 110 and UE 120 may communicate to establish one or more ROs.

[0266] As indicated by reference numeral 1005, the base station 110 may associate one or more downlink reference signals (DL-RS) with corresponding PCIs in a plurality of PCIs associated with a serving cell in which the base station 110 is operating. In some aspects, some or all of the plurality of PCIs may be included in the same timing advance group (TAG). In some aspects, different PCIs included in the plurality of PCIs may be associated with different TAGs. For example, the plurality of PCIs may be included in the same TAG or in different TAGs based at least in part on the purpose of the RACH process in which the plurality of PCIs are used, as described below.

[0267] In some aspects, some or all of the multiple PCIs may be associated with a co-located base station or transmit receive point (TRP). For example, some or all of the multiple PCIs may be associated with any base station and / or transmit receive point co-located with base station 110. Additionally or alternatively, different PCIs included in the multiple PCIs may be associated with base stations or TRPs in different locations. For example, a first subset of the multiple PCIs may be associated with base station 110, and a second subset of the multiple PCIs may be associated with different base stations and / or TRPs in a serving cell.

[0268] In some aspects, each of the one or more DL-RSs has a corresponding PCI among a plurality of PCIs associated with a serving cell. For example, a first DL-RS included in the one or more DL-RSs may be associated with a first PCI of a serving cell, and a second DL-RS included in the one or more DL-RSs may be associated with a second PCI of a serving cell.

[0269] In some aspects, the one or more DL-RS may include at least one of a set of SSBs, a set of channel state information reference signals, or a combination thereof. As further shown by reference numeral 1005, multiple SSBs may be associated with a single PCI (e.g., SSB1, SSB4, and SSB5 are associated with PCI1). Additionally or alternatively, multiple PCIs may be associated with a single SSB.

[0270] As indicated by reference numeral 1010, the base station 110 may send an indication of an association between one or more DL-RSs and corresponding PCIs of a plurality of PCIs associated with a serving cell to the UE 120. For example, the UE 120 may receive the indication in an RRC message for contention-free random access (RA), a PDCCH order message triggering a RACH procedure, or a combination thereof.

[0271] In some aspects, one or more DL-RSs may be used to identify one or more beams (or SSBs) associated with one or more ROs for a RACH procedure. For example, as indicated by reference numeral 1015, the UE 120 may measure the DL-RS (e.g., in the form of a channel quality indicator (CQI) and / or other metric of signal quality and / or reliability) and identify or select one or more SSBs for one or more ROs for a RACH procedure with the base station 110. Fig.10 As shown, UE 120 may identify or select one or more SSBs associated with one or more PCIs of a serving cell in which base station 110 operates. Thus, UE 120 may initiate multiple ROs with base station 110 using multiple PCIs.

[0272] In some aspects, the indication may further indicate a beam scanning pattern for one or more DL-RSs, indicating an association between the one or more DL-RSs and a PCI in a plurality of PCIs associated with a serving cell. For example, the beam scanning pattern may indicate a directionality, a pulse duration, a pulse frequency, etc. of the DL-RS.

[0273] Additionally or alternatively, the indication may indicate an association between one or more PDCCH monitoring opportunities in a PDCCH monitoring opportunity set for a RACH process and a PCI in a plurality of PCIs associated with a serving cell. For example, a first PDCCH monitoring opportunity included in a PDCCH monitoring opportunity set may be associated with a first PCI of a serving cell, and a second PDCCH monitoring opportunity included in a PDCCH monitoring opportunity set may be associated with a second PCI of a serving cell. In some aspects, the indication may define one or more PDCCH monitoring opportunities within a common RAR window for various multiple PCIs and / or within a separate RAR window for a single PCI in a plurality of PCIs.

[0274] As indicated by reference numeral 1020, UE 120 may send one or more first random access messages (Msg1 or MsgA) to base station 110 in one or more corresponding ROs associated with one or more PCIs in the plurality of PCIs. For example, the one or more first random access messages may include a random access preamble identifier, as described above in conjunction with Figure 7 as described.

[0275] In some aspects, the UE 120 may send one or more first random access messages according to a pattern defined by or associated with an indication received from the base station 110. For example, the UE 120 may send one or more first random access messages in one or more shared opportunities, as described below with respect to Fig.11 and Fig.12as described, and / or sent in one or more separate occasions, as described below with respect to Fig.13 as described.

[0276] As indicated by reference numeral 1025, the UE 120 may receive one or more second random access messages (RAR or Msg2 or MsgB) associated with one or more PCIs from the base station 110, at least in part based on sending the one or more first random access messages, which include a PDCCH portion and a PDSCH portion. For example, the one or more second random access messages may indicate a detected random access preamble identifier (e.g., received from the UE 120 as described above). In some aspects, the base station 110 may send a PDCCH communication that schedules a PDSCH communication including one or more RARs. For example, the UE 120 may monitor a PDCCH communication from the base station 110 that is addressed to a random access radio network temporary identifier (RA-RNTI) associated with the UE 120.

[0277] In some aspects, the UE 120 may monitor the one or more second random access messages according to a pattern defined by or associated with an indication received from the base station 110. For example, the UE 120 may monitor one or more PDCCH opportunities in the PDCCH portion of the one or more second random access messages. The one or more PDCCH opportunities may correspond to a PCI associated with one or more corresponding RACH opportunities in which the one or more first random access messages are sent, e.g., as described above in conjunction with reference numeral 1020.

[0278] The UE 120 may further receive a PDCCH portion of one or more second random access messages based at least in part on monitoring one or more PDCCH opportunities. In some aspects, the PDCCH portion may include scheduling information for at least one of a PDSCH portion of the one or more second random access messages, one or more subsequent random access messages, or a combination thereof. Additionally or alternatively, the PDCCH portion may indicate a different association between a PCI of the plurality of PCIs and at least one of a PDSCH portion of the one or more second random access messages, one or more subsequent random access messages, or a combination thereof.

[0279] In some aspects, some or all RACH opportunities corresponding to one or more DL-RSs may occur before the RAR window corresponding to these RACH opportunities, as described below in conjunction with Fig.11 and Fig.12For example, UE 120 may perform transmissions as indicated by reference numeral 1020 for these RACH opportunities before UE 120 performs monitoring as indicated by reference numeral 1025 for these RACH opportunities. In some aspects, UE 120 may use one RAR window with PDCCH monitoring opportunities associated with all or some PCIs, as described below in conjunction with Fig.11 As described above, and / or different RAR windows having PDCCH monitoring opportunities associated with different PCIs may be used, as described below in conjunction with Fig.12 as described.

[0280] In some aspects, the UE 120 may apply the timing advance value received in the second random access message in the one or more second random access messages from the base station 110 to all PCIs included in the TAG including the PCI associated with the second random access message. For example, when some or all of the multiple PCIs are included in the same TAG, the UE 120 may apply the tag to all PCIs in the TAG based on a single second random access message in the one or more second random access messages from the base station 110.

[0281] Additionally or alternatively, one or more first RACH opportunities corresponding to a first subset of one or more DL-RSs may occur before a first RAR window that includes a PDCCH monitoring opportunity associated with a first PCI (of the plurality of PCIs) associated with the first subset, and one or more second RACH opportunities corresponding to a second subset of one or more DL-RSs may occur before a second RAR window that includes a PDCCH monitoring opportunity associated with a second PCI (of the plurality of PCIs) associated with the second subset and that may occur after the first RAR window, as described below in conjunction with Fig.13 For example, before UE 120 performs one or more transmissions as indicated by reference numeral 1020 and one or more monitorings as indicated by reference numeral 1025 for the second subset, UE 120 may perform one or more transmissions as indicated by reference numeral 1020 and one or more monitorings as indicated by reference numeral 1025 for the first subset.

[0282] As shown at reference numeral 1030, UE 120 and / or base station 110 may send one or more subsequent messages to each other. For example, UE 120 may send or receive one or more subsequent RO messages, such as Msg3 described above in conjunction with reference numeral 720; one or more confirmation messages, such as HARQ ACK described above in conjunction with reference numeral 730; and the like. Additionally or alternatively, base station 110 may send one or more subsequent RO messages, such as Msg4 described above in conjunction with reference numeral 725; one or more confirmation messages, such as HARQ ACK described above in conjunction with reference numeral 840; and the like.

[0283] Use combination Fig.10 The described process enables the base station 110 to establish a RO with the UE 120 across multiple PCIs. Fig.10 The described process enables base station 110 to use the same SSB on multiple PCIs as UE 120. Therefore, base station 110 can avoid PCI confusion and not have to select a suboptimal SSB for RO with UE 120, thereby improving communication quality and reliability with UE 120.

[0284] As shown above, Fig.10 Other examples can be found in the Fig.10 Different than described.

[0285] Fig.11 1 is a diagram illustrating an example 1100 of cross-cell scanning of random access messages and cross-cell scanning of RAR messages in a common RAR window according to the present disclosure. Fig.11 As shown, a base station (gNB) (e.g., base station 110) may use multiple SSBs (in Fig.11 In the example shown in Figure 1, three SSBs are shown. Fig.11 In the example of , the base station uses multiple SSBs in multiple ROs with a UE (e.g., UE 120). Additionally or alternatively, the base station can use multiple SSBs in multiple ROs with multiple UEs.

[0286] Similar to Fig.10 , a base station can use multiple PCIs associated with multiple SSBs. Fig.11 In the example of , the base station associates different PCIs with different SSBs. Additionally or alternatively, the base station may associate the same PCI with two or more SSBs.

[0287] Similar to Fig.10 , the UE may select an SSB for RACH timing with the base station based on one or more DL-RS received from the base station. Fig.11As shown, all RACH opportunities corresponding to one or more DL-RSs occur before the RAR window corresponding to these RACH opportunities. Therefore, the UE can send a first random access message to the base station using all selected SSBs (regardless of which PCIs are associated with the selected SSBs) during a common time period. The UE can also monitor a second random access message from the base station on all selected SSBs (regardless of which PCIs are associated with the selected SSBs) during the common RAR window. Therefore, the RAR window can include PDCCH monitoring opportunities associated with all PCIs in multiple PCIs.

[0288] Fig.11 The example depicts a serving cell using three PCIs. Fig.11 The techniques shown in are also applicable to serving cells using more than three PCIs.

[0289] Use combination Fig.11 The described cross-cell opportunities and common RAR windows enable the base station to establish RO with the UE across multiple PCIs. Fig.11 The described process enables the base station and the UE to minimize the delay with respect to the first random access message and the second random access message. Thus, the base station can be enabled to avoid confusion with the UE's PCI while reducing delay and not having to select a suboptimal SSB for the RO with the UE.

[0290] As shown above, Fig.11 Other examples can be found in the Fig.11 Different than described.

[0291] Fig.12 1 is a diagram illustrating an example 1200 of cross-cell scanning of random access messages and single-cell scanning of RAR messages in a separate RAR window for each cell according to the present disclosure. Fig.12 As shown, a base station (gNB) (e.g., base station 110) may use multiple SSBs (in Fig.12 In the example shown in Figure 1, three SSBs are shown. Fig.12 In the example of , the base station uses multiple SSBs in multiple ROs with a UE (e.g., UE 120). Additionally or alternatively, the base station can use multiple SSBs in multiple ROs with multiple UEs.

[0292] Similar to Fig.10 , a base station can use multiple PCIs associated with multiple SSBs. Fig.12 In the example of , the base station associates different PCIs with different SSBs. Additionally or alternatively, the base station may associate the same PCI with two or more SSBs.

[0293] Similar to Fig.10, the UE may select an SSB for RACH timing with the base station based on one or more DL-RS received from the base station. Fig.12 As shown, all RACH opportunities corresponding to one or more DL-RSs occur before the RAR window set corresponding to these RACH opportunities. Therefore, the UE can send a first random access message to the base station using all selected SSBs (regardless of which PCIs are associated with the selected SSBs) during a common time period. The UE can monitor a second random access message from the base station during a separate RAR window based on which PCIs are associated with the selected SSBs. Therefore, different RAR windows in the RAR window set can include PDCCH monitoring opportunities associated with different PCIs in the multiple PCIs.

[0294] Fig.12 The example depicts a serving cell using three PCIs. Fig.12 The techniques shown in are also applicable to serving cells using more than three PCIs.

[0295] Use combination Fig.12 The described cross-cell opportunities and separate RAR windows enable the base station to establish RO with the UE across multiple PCIs. Fig.12 The described process enables the base station and the UE to minimize the delay of the first random access message while improving the quality and / or reliability of the second random access message. Therefore, the base station can avoid confusion with the PCI of the UE while balancing the delay with the quality and / or reliability, and does not have to select a suboptimal SSB for the RO with the UE.

[0296] As shown above, Fig.12 Other examples can be found in the Fig.12 Different than described.

[0297] Fig.13 1 is a diagram illustrating an example 1300 of single-cell scanning of random access messages and single-cell scanning of RAR messages in a separate RAR window for each cell according to the present disclosure. Fig.13 As shown, a base station (gNB) (e.g., base station 110) may use multiple SSBs (in Fig.13 In the example shown in Figure 1, three SSBs are shown. Fig.13 In the example of , the base station uses multiple SSBs in multiple ROs with a UE (e.g., UE 120). Additionally or alternatively, the base station can use multiple SSBs in multiple ROs with multiple UEs.

[0298] Similar to Fig.10 , a base station can use multiple PCIs associated with multiple SSBs. Fig.13In the example of , the base station associates different PCIs with different SSBs. Additionally or alternatively, the base station may associate the same PCI with two or more SSBs.

[0299] Similar to Fig.10 , the UE may select an SSB for RACH timing with the base station based on one or more DL-RS received from the base station. Fig.13 As shown, one or more first RACH opportunities corresponding to a first subset of one or more DL-RSs occur before the first RAR window, and one or more second RACH opportunities corresponding to a second subset of one or more DL-RSs occur before the second RAR window. Therefore, the UE can send a first random access message to the base station using a subset associated with the first PCI in the selected SSB before the first RAR window, and can send a first random access message to the base station using a subset associated with the second PCI in the selected SSB after the first RAR window. Similarly, the UE can monitor a second random access message from the base station on a subset associated with the first PCI in the selected SSB during the first RAR window, and can monitor a second random access message from the base station on a subset associated with the second PCI in the selected SSB during the second RAR window. Therefore, the first RAR window includes a PDCCH monitoring opportunity associated with a first PCI associated with the first subset among multiple PCIs, and the second RAR window includes a PDCCH monitoring opportunity associated with a second PCI associated with the second subset among multiple PCIs and occurring after the first RAR window.

[0300] Fig.13 The example further shows that the UE sends a first random access message to the base station using a subset associated with the third PCI in the selected SSB after the second RAR window, and monitors a second random access message from the base station on the subset associated with the third PCI in the selected SSB during the third RAR window. Fig.13 The techniques shown in are also applicable to serving cells using more than three PCIs.

[0301] Use combination Fig.13 The described single cell opportunity and separate RAR window enable the base station to establish RO with the UE across multiple PCIs. Fig.13 The described process enables the base station and the UE to maximize the quality and / or reliability of the first random access message and the second random access message. Therefore, the base station can avoid confusion with the PCI of the UE while improving the quality and / or reliability and not having to select a suboptimal SSB for the RO with the UE.

[0302] As shown above, Fig.13Other examples can be found in the Fig.13 Different than described.
