According to an implementation, an example method of detecting unexpected control states of an autonomous driving system includes generating environment data of a vehicle; determining, by the autonomous driving system, a first control state based on the environment data of the vehicle; determining, by reference to a model, a second control state based on the environment data, wherein the model defines at least one scenario, each scenario corresponding to a plurality of expected control states and a state switching condition, and in each of the expected control states corresponding to the scenario, actions of the vehicle in the scenario follow traffic rules; and determining an unexpected control state of the autonomous driving system by comparing the first control state and the second control state.
