[0009] Technical issues
[0010] Depending on the function of the electronic device, its surface temperature can rise to a level that could burn a user. Therefore, to ensure user safety, the upper limit of the electronic device's surface temperature needs to be controlled (relaxed) to a level where the user is unlikely to be burned. Typically, this is achieved by reducing the performance of the electronic device to maintain this control (relaxation) so that the surface temperature does not exceed the upper limit.
[0011] In view of the above, the purpose of this disclosure is to achieve high performance in electronic devices while ensuring user safety.
[0012] Solution to the problem
[0013] Electronic devices according to embodiments of the present disclosure include
[0014] A temperature sensor that detects the temperature of a designated portion of the electronic device; and
[0015] A mode controller, when the electronic device is used without contact with a human body, activates a continuous mode, which is a mode that allows the surface temperature of the electronic device to rise to a second upper limit, the surface temperature being calculated based on the temperature detected by the temperature sensor, the second upper limit being higher than a first upper limit which is the upper limit of the temperature in normal mode.
[0016] When the electronic device is used without contact with the human body, this embodiment allows the surface temperature of the electronic device to rise to a temperature within the low-temperature burn temperature range (or the upper limit of the low-temperature burn temperature range) (continuous mode). This results in maintaining (not reducing) the performance level of the electronic device. This allows for high performance of the electronic device while ensuring user safety.
[0017] The electronic device also includes a cable interface, and
[0018] When the cable is inserted into the cable interface, the mode controller determines that the electronic device will be used without contact with the human body.
[0019] Depending on the function performed by the electronic device, the surface temperature may rise to a higher than normal level. Specific examples of such functions include 5G communication via USB cable using network sharing, and real-time display of high-definition motion images received via HDMI (registered trademark) cable. The electronic device can be used without human contact while employing these functions. When performing functions that might raise the surface temperature to a higher than normal level while using the electronic device without human contact, a continuous mode is activated. This allows for high performance of the electronic device while simultaneously ensuring user safety.
[0020] In response to activating the persistent mode, the mode controller outputs a start query message, which asks whether the user agrees to begin the persistent mode.
[0021] When "agree" is entered, the mode controller begins the continuous mode, and
[0022] When no consent is entered, the mode controller shuts down the continuous mode.
[0023] Obtaining user consent at regular intervals before enabling persistent mode allows for more reliable assurance of user security.
[0024] When the surface temperature exceeds the first upper limit while the continuous mode is active, the mode controller outputs a maintenance query message, which inquires whether to maintain the continuous mode.
[0025] When the input indicates agreement, the mode controller maintains the continuous mode, and
[0026] When no consent is entered, the mode controller shuts down the continuous mode.
[0027] Obtaining user consent at a timed interval when the surface temperature reaches the lower limit of the low-temperature burn range ensures user safety more reliably. Furthermore, disabling continuous mode when no consent is entered (including in cases of timeout) further ensures user safety. This prevents users from being burned by touching electronic devices without realizing the surface temperature has risen to the low-temperature burn range before they become aware of the persistent inquiry message.
[0028] When the surface temperature reaches a specific temperature higher than the first upper limit before the consent is entered while the continuous mode is enabled, the mode controller disables the continuous mode.
[0029] A surface temperature reaching a specific temperature refers to a state where the surface temperature has actually risen to a level that could suddenly cause low-temperature burns during brief contact, even if the user still perceives the electronic device to have a safe surface temperature. Touching the electronic device without being aware of this rise in surface temperature is dangerous. Therefore, shutting off continuous operation when the surface temperature reaches a specific temperature ensures user safety.
[0030] When the mode controller maintains the continuous mode in response to input of agreement, the mode controller periodically outputs the maintenance query message during the period when the surface temperature is above the first upper limit and equal to or below the second upper limit.
[0031] When the input indicates agreement, the mode controller maintains the continuous mode, and
[0032] When no consent is entered, the mode controller shuts down the continuous mode.
[0033] When the surface temperature is within the low-temperature burn range, users are regularly informed of the dangers and educated, and their consent is obtained. This leads to more reliable assurance of user safety.
[0034] The electronic device also includes a cable interface.
[0035] When the mode controller maintains the continuous mode in response to input consent, the mode controller periodically determines whether the cable is inserted into the cable interface while the surface temperature is above the first upper limit and equal to or below the second upper limit.
[0036] When the cable is inserted, the mode controller maintains the continuous mode, while
[0037] When no cable is inserted, the mode controller disables the continuous mode.
[0038] This results in user-friendliness without the hassle of repeated periodic user consent, and allows the device to maintain continuous mode only when it is highly likely to be used without human contact. This leads to a high level of security.
[0039] When the surface temperature exceeds the first upper limit while the continuous mode is on, the mode controller continues to output a warning icon and outputs a warning message when the warning icon is activated.
[0040] This leads to users being informed of dangers and educated at effective time intervals, thus ensuring user safety more reliably.
[0041] When the surface temperature drops to or below the first upper limit while the continuous mode is enabled, the mode controller hides the warning icon.
[0042] Therefore, the warning icon remains displayed on the main screen while the surface temperature is within the low-temperature burn range. This results in users being informed of the danger and educated more frequently at effective time intervals, thus leading to more reliable assurance of user safety.
[0043] When the continuous mode is enabled, the mode controller continues to output explanation messages until the surface temperature drops to or below the first upper limit. The explanation messages are messages that explain the continuous mode.
[0044] This allows users to be informed of and educated about potential dangers even when the surface temperature does not reach the lower limit of the low-temperature burn temperature range, thus ensuring user safety more reliably.
[0045] When the surface temperature exceeds the second upper limit while the continuous mode is on, the mode controller restarts the electronic device and turns off the continuous mode.
[0046] This makes it possible to more reliably ensure user safety.
[0047] The electronic device is a mobile device.
[0048] Mobile devices are general-purpose devices used by a large number of end users. Most users are unaware that the surface temperature of electronic devices can rise to temperatures that can cause low-temperature burns. In other words, most users are unaware of the potential dangers of electronic devices. Therefore, in this embodiment, when the surface temperature rises to a temperature within the range of low-temperature burns, users are frequently informed of the danger and educated at effective intervals, and their consent is obtained. This leads to more reliable assurance of user safety.
[0049] The mode control procedure according to embodiments of this disclosure causes the control circuitry of the electronic device to operate as a mode controller.
[0050] The electronic device includes a temperature sensor that detects the temperature at a designated location within the electronic device.
[0051] When the electronic device is used without contact with the human body, the mode controller activates a continuous mode, which is a mode that allows the surface temperature of the electronic device to rise to a second upper limit, the surface temperature being calculated based on the temperature detected by the temperature sensor, the second upper limit being higher than a first upper limit, which is the upper limit of the temperature in normal mode.

[0069] The embodiments according to this disclosure will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[0070] I. First Embodiment
[0071] 1. Hardware Components of Electronic Devices
[0072] Figure 1 The illustrations illustrate the hardware configuration of an electronic device according to a first embodiment of this disclosure.
[0073] Typically, electronic device 10 is a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet computer. More specifically, electronic device 10 is a device intended for use in contact with the human body (including contact with the human body through clothing). For example, electronic device 10 is used by the user holding it in his / her hand, or by placing it in the pocket of the user's clothing (e.g., when performing network sharing functions).
[0074] The electronic device 10 includes a control circuit 100, a storage device 14, a communication interface 15, an input device 16, an output device 17, a temperature sensor 18, a cable interface 19, and a bus B, which are interconnected via the bus B.
[0075] The control circuit 100 is a system-on-a-chip (SoC) including a central processing unit (CPU) 11, a read-only memory (ROM) 12, and a random access memory (RAM) 13. The CPU 11 loads an information processing program stored in the ROM 12 into the RAM 13 and executes the program. The ROM 12 permanently stores, for example, the program executed by the CPU 11, and data. The ROM 12 is an example of a non-transitory computer-readable recording medium. The control circuit 100 also includes, for example, dedicated hardware circuitry and a graphics processing unit (GPU) (not shown).
[0076] Storage device 14 includes high-capacity non-volatile recording media such as solid-state drives.
[0077] Input device 16 includes, for example, a touch panel and various switches. Input device 16 detects user actions and outputs the detected actions to CPU 11. Input device 16 may also include a voice input device such as a microphone.
[0078] Output device 17 may include, for example, an LCD or OLED display integrated with a touch panel. Output device 17 performs calculations based on information received from control circuitry 100 and displays the generated image signal on the screen. Output device 17 may also include a sound output device such as a speaker.
[0079] Communication interface 15 is an interface used to establish a connection with a network N such as the Internet.
[0080] Temperature sensor 18 detects the temperature of a designated part of electronic device 10. Typically, temperature sensor 18 detects the temperature of the part where the temperature rises. For example, temperature sensor 18 detects the temperature of control circuit 100. A single temperature sensor 18 or multiple temperature sensors 18 can be used.
[0081] A USB cable, or an HDMI (trademarked) cable, fiber optic cable, LAN cable, or DVI cable, is inserted into cable interface 19. For example, inserting a USB cable into cable interface 19 connects electronic device 10 to a personal computer (not shown). Electronic device 10 connects the personal computer to network N via, for example, 5G communication using network sharing, and the personal computer is connected via a USB cable. Alternatively, inserting an HDMI (trademarked) cable, fiber optic cable, LAN cable, or DVI cable into cable interface 19 connects electronic device 10 to a camera (not shown). Electronic device 10 continuously displays motion images captured by the camera on output device 17 (display) in real time.
[0082] 2. Functional Composition of Electronic Devices
[0083] Figure 2 Diagram illustrating the functional structure of an electronic device.
[0084] The control circuit 100 executes the mode control program, thus functioning as the mode controller 101. The control circuit 100 also functions as the temperature converter 102.
[0085] During operation of the electronic device 10, the temperature converter 102 periodically (e.g., every few seconds) acquires the temperature of a designated portion of the electronic device 10 (e.g., control circuitry 100), the temperature of which is detected by the temperature sensor 18. The temperature converter 102 periodically calculates a surface temperature ST based on the acquired temperature of the designated portion (i.e., the temperature converter 102 periodically converts the temperature of the designated portion into a surface temperature ST). The temperature converter 102 periodically outputs the calculated surface temperature ST (i.e., the estimated surface temperature ST) to the mode controller 101.
[0086] The mode controller 101 performs the following operation procedures ( Figure 3The control circuit 100 controls the electronic device 10 to turn the continuous mode on and off. "Continuous mode" is a mode that allows the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 to rise to a temperature within the low-temperature burn temperature range (or the upper limit Tmax of the low-temperature burn temperature range). Specifically, the continuous mode being on means that the control circuit 100 (controlling the electronic device 10) is relaxed so that the upper limit of the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 is equal to or lower than the upper limit Tmax of the low-temperature burn temperature range. In other words, if the continuous mode is off, the surface temperature ST will, in principle, not exceed the upper limit Tmax of the low-temperature burn temperature range.
[0087] In the following description, the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 is divided into three temperature ranges (safe temperature range, low-temperature burn temperature range, and high-temperature burn temperature range), and these three temperature ranges are used. The low-temperature burn temperature range is the temperature range that causes low-temperature burns. The safe temperature range is the temperature range equal to or lower than the upper limit Tmin (first upper limit) of the safe temperature range, and is the temperature range where low-temperature burns are unlikely to occur even if a person remains in contact with the surface of the electronic device 10 for an extended period. The low-temperature burn temperature range is the temperature range higher than the upper limit Tmin (first upper limit) of the safe temperature range, and equal to or lower than the upper limit Tmax (second upper limit). The low-temperature burn temperature range is the temperature range where low-temperature burns are likely to occur if a person remains in contact with the surface of the electronic device 10 for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. The high-temperature burn temperature range is the temperature range higher than the upper limit Tmax (second upper limit) of the low-temperature burn temperature range (Tmin < Tmax), and is the temperature range where high-temperature burns are likely to occur if a person remains in contact with the surface of the electronic device 10 for less than approximately 1 minute.
[0088] For example, it is sufficient if the upper limit of the safe temperature range, Tmin (the first upper limit), is defined within a safe temperature range (e.g., 45°C to 51°C) where low-temperature burns are unlikely to occur even if the human body remains in contact with the surface of the electronic device 10 for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. It is sufficient if the upper limit of the low-temperature burn temperature range, Tmax (the second upper limit), is defined within a temperature range (e.g., 55°C to 61°C) where high-temperature burns would occur if the human body remained in contact with the surface of the electronic device 10 for less than 1 minute, thus making it unacceptable for safety. It is sufficient if the low-temperature burn temperature range is defined based on, for example, ISO 13732-1 "Ergonomics of the thermal environment - Methods for the assessment of human responses to contact with surfaces," according to, for example, the material of the surface of the electronic device 10 and the duration of contact between the human body and the surface of the electronic device 10.
[0089] Depending on the function performed by electronic device 10, the surface temperature ST can rise to a higher temperature than usual. Specific examples of such functions include 5G communication via USB cable using network sharing, and real-time display of high-definition motion images received via HDMI (trademarked) cable, fiber optic cable, LAN cable, and DVI cable (hereinafter, only "HDMI (trademarked) cable" is described representatively). As an example of the function of using 5G communication via network sharing, electronic device 10 connects a personal computer to network N via, for example, 5G communication via network sharing, and the personal computer is connected to electronic device 10 via a USB cable inserted into cable interface 19. As an example of the function of receiving and displaying high-definition motion images, electronic device 10 maintains real-time display of motion images captured by a camera on output device 17 (display), and the camera is connected to electronic device 10 via HDMI (trademarked) cable, fiber optic cable, LAN cable, and DVI cable inserted into cable interface 19.
[0090] When using these functions, the electronic device 10 can be used without human contact. For example, in the case of network sharing, the user operates a personal computer, so the user does not touch the electronic device 10. Furthermore, in the case of displaying high-definition motion images, the electronic device 10 is placed in a bracket fixed to the camera, and the display of the electronic device 10 serves as a monitor. Especially during video production, mobile devices (electronic device 10) such as smartphones or tablet computers can be connected to high-performance cameras used for professional purposes and can be used as monitors by a large number of personnel to review the captured motion images.
[0091] On the other hand, electronic devices, such as smartphones or tablets, are general-purpose devices used by a large number of end users. Furthermore, these mobile devices are expected to be used in contact with the human body (including through clothing). For example, a mobile device may be used by a user holding it in their hand or by placing it in a pocket of clothing (e.g., when performing network sharing). Therefore, most users are unaware that the surface temperature of the electronic device may rise to a temperature that could cause low-temperature burns. In other words, most users are not aware of the potential danger of the electronic device. It is also conceivable to attach stickers to the electronic device to inform and educate users about the danger. However, using stickers makes it difficult to adequately educate all users about the danger. Therefore, typically, when an electronic device performs a function that may raise its surface temperature to a higher than normal, as described above, the upper limit of the electronic device's surface temperature is controlled (relaxed) to a level where the user is unlikely to be burned (corresponding to the safe temperature range in this embodiment) to ensure the safety of all users. Typically, the performance of the electronic device is reduced (e.g., the upper limit of the clock speed of the control circuit) to achieve control (relaxation) such that the surface temperature of the electronic device does not exceed the upper limit. This could result in the device not meeting the required specifications.
[0092] In view of the above, according to this embodiment, when the electronic device 10 is used without contact with the human body, the mode controller 101 allows the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 to rise to a temperature within the low-temperature burn temperature range (or the upper limit of the low-temperature burn temperature range) (continuous mode). This results in maintaining (not reducing) the performance level of the electronic device 10. Furthermore, in response to the possibility that the electronic device 10 will be used by a large number of personnel, and in response to differences in the level of hazard awareness among users, when the surface temperature ST rises to a temperature within the low-temperature burn temperature range, users are frequently informed of the danger and educated at effective intervals, and their consent is obtained. This results in more reliably ensuring user safety.
[0093] 3. Operation procedure of the mode controller
[0094] (1) Procedure for operations to be performed when continuous mode is set to enabled.
[0095] Figure 3 This diagram illustrates the operation process of the mode controller. Figure 4 and Figure 5 An illustrated example of a screen used to enable persistent mode.
[0096] As a prerequisite for operation, continuous mode is off; therefore, the surface temperature ST of electronic device 10 is within a safe temperature range. The user attempts to activate continuous mode by operating the touch panel. First, to activate continuous mode, the user selects the "Continuous Mode" menu 201 on the system settings screen 200. Figure 4 Then, the continuous mode setting screen 210 is displayed. The continuous mode setting screen 210 displays a message 211 indicating the definition of the continuous mode, a message 212 indicating that the continuous mode can only be used during USB network sharing or when connected via HDMI (registered trademark), and a sliding button 213. Figure 5 The user operates the sliding button 213 to activate the continuous mode. Figure 5 ).
[0097] The mode controller 101 determines whether the USB cable or HDMI cable is inserted into the cable interface 19 (step S101). When the USB cable or HDMI cable is not inserted (step S101, No), the mode controller 101 determines that there is a possibility that the electronic device 10 will be used in contact with a human body, and therefore does not allow the continuous mode to be turned on. In this case, the mode controller 101 performs the procedure to be performed when the continuous mode is turned off (described later) (step S113).
[0098] On the other hand, when a USB cable or an HDMI (registered trademark) cable is plugged in (step S101, yes), the mode controller 101 determines that the electronic device 10 will be used without contact with the human body and activates the continuous mode (step S102).
[0099] Note that, as a variation, the mode controller 101 may omit the determination of whether a USB cable or an HDMI (registered trademark) cable is plugged in (step S101). In this case, when the mode controller 101 detects that the user has pressed the open sliding button 213 ( Figure 5 When the mode controller 101 is in operation, it activates the continuous mode (step S102).
[0100] Figure 6 This illustration shows an example of a screen that prompts for a message.
[0101] In response to the activation of the continuous mode (step S102), the mode controller 101 outputs a start inquiry message 214 to the continuous mode setting screen 210 (step S103). The "start inquiry message" is a message for inquiring whether to agree to start the continuous mode. The user selects "Agree and Start" 215 to enter his / her agreement, or selects "Disagree" 216.
[0102] When no agreement is input (selecting "Disagree" 216 or timeout) (step S103, No), the mode controller 101 turns off the continuous mode (step S112), and proceeds with the process of operations to be performed when the continuous mode is turned off (described later) (step S113).
[0103] (2) Process of operations performed within the safe temperature range (ST ≤ Tmin)
[0104] On the other hand, when an agreement is input (step S103, Yes), the mode controller 101 starts the continuous mode. At this time, the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 is within the safe temperature range.
[0105] Figure 7 An example of a screen with an explanatory message is illustrated.
[0106] The mode controller 101 outputs an explanatory message 301 to the main screen 300 (step S104). The "explanatory message" is a message indicating that the continuous mode is activated and explaining the continuous mode. In other words, the "explanatory message" is a message indicating that the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 may rise to a temperature within the low-temperature scalding temperature range.
[0107] The mode controller 101 regularly (e.g., every few seconds) determines whether the surface temperature ST still remains within the safe temperature range or has changed to a temperature within the low-temperature scalding temperature range (step S105). When the surface temperature ST is equal to or lower than the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range (i.e., when the surface temperature ST is within the safe temperature range) (step S105, No), the mode controller 101 keeps outputting the explanatory message 301 to the main screen 300 (step S104) until the surface temperature ST exceeds the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range.
[0108] (3) Process of operations performed within the low-temperature scalding temperature range (Tmin < ST ≤ Tmax)
[0109] Figure 8 An example of a screen with a warning icon and a warning message is illustrated.
[0110] On the other hand, when the surface temperature ST exceeds the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range (step S105, Yes), the mode controller 101 outputs a warning icon 311 to the main screen 300 (step S106). When the user operates the warning icon 311, the mode controller 101 outputs a warning message 312. The "warning message" is a message that warns the user that the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 has risen to a temperature within the low-temperature burn temperature range. Note that while the surface temperature ST is within the low-temperature burn temperature range, the mode controller 101 maintains the display of the warning icon 311 on the main screen 300.
[0111] Figure 9 The illustration shows an example of a screen with warning messages and persistent inquiry messages.
[0112] When the surface temperature ST exceeds the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range (step S105, Yes), the mode controller 101 further outputs a warning message 313 (similar to warning message 312) and a maintenance inquiry message 314 to the main screen 300 (step S107). The "maintenance inquiry message" is used to ask whether the user agrees to maintain the continuous mode. The user selects "agree" 315 to enter his / her consent, or selects "disagree and close" 316.
[0113] When no consent is entered (select "Disagree and Close" 316 or timeout occurs) (step S107, No), the mode controller 101 closes the continuous mode (step S112) and proceeds with the operations to be performed when the continuous mode is closed (described later) (step S113). The mode controller 101 terminates functions that can raise the surface temperature to a higher than normal temperature (such as 5G communication using USB network sharing or displaying high-definition motion images using HDMI (registered trademark)). Note that it is sufficient as long as the timeout duration is set to a time when it is unlikely to cause low-temperature burns even if a human body remains in contact with the surface of the electronic device 10 (e.g., approximately 1 to 5 minutes). Note that an exception may be adopted where the timeout does not occur when the electronic device 10 performs functions that the user expects to use without placing the electronic device 10 in a pocket (such as USB network sharing).
[0114] In addition, when the surface temperature ST has reached a specific temperature greater than the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range before the input consent, the mode controller 101 also turns off the continuous mode (step S112), and proceeds with the process of operations to be performed when the continuous mode is turned off (described later) (step S113). The mode controller 101 terminates the function that may raise the surface temperature to a temperature higher than normal (such as using 5G communication sharing the network or displaying high-quality motion images using HDMI (registered trademark)). The "specific temperature" is a temperature that may cause low-temperature scalding within a contact time shorter than the contact time that causes low-temperature scalding when the human body is in contact with the electronic device 10 having a temperature corresponding to the lower limit Tmin. For example, the "specific temperature" is a temperature about 3°C higher than the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range.
[0115] Figure 10 and Figure 11 An example of a screen with a continuous mode termination message is illustrated.
[0116] When the mode controller 101 turns off the continuous mode (step S112), the mode controller 101 outputs continuous mode termination messages 317, 318 to the main screen 300. The "continuous mode termination message" indicates that the continuous mode is terminated by being turned off. When the mode controller 101 terminates the network sharing communication via the USB cable, the mode controller 101 outputs the continuous mode termination message 317 indicating this situation ( Figure 10 ). When the mode controller 101 turns off the continuous mode, the warning icon 311 continues to be displayed because the surface temperature ST is still higher than the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range.
[0117] On the other hand, when the input consent is given (step S107, yes), the mode controller 101 maintains the continuous mode. At this time, the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 is within the low-temperature scalding temperature range. When the mode controller 101 maintains the continuous mode in response to the input of consent, the mode controller inquires about maintenance messages 314 at regular intervals (step S108, yes) when the surface temperature ST is within the low-temperature scalding temperature range (right side in step S109) (Tmin < ST ≤ Tmax) (step S107). The mode controller 101 maintains the continuous mode when the input consent is given, and turns off the continuous mode when the input consent is not given. Note that it is sufficient if the time interval for regularly outputting the maintenance inquiry message 314 is set to a time when it is unlikely to cause low-temperature scalding even if the human body remains in contact with the surface of the electronic device 10 (for example, about 1 to 5 minutes) (step S107). The reason is that once consent to the maintenance inquiry message 314 is given (step S107, yes), this ensures that the user is currently using the electronic device 10 safely (not in contact with the electronic device 10), so it is not necessary to obtain consent frequently.
[0118] The mode controller 101 periodically (e.g., every few seconds) determines whether the surface temperature ST has changed to a temperature within the safe temperature range, or remains within the low-temperature burn temperature range, or has changed to a temperature within the high-temperature burn temperature range (step S109, which is similar to step S105). When the surface temperature ST drops to or below the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range (ST≤Tmin), this indicates that the surface temperature ST has changed from a temperature within the low-temperature burn temperature range to a temperature within the safe temperature range (left side of step S109). Then, the mode controller 101 hides (turns off) the warning icon 311 on the main screen 300 (step S110). The mode controller 101 repeats the operations to be performed when the surface temperature ST is within the safe temperature range (step S105 and subsequent operations).
[0119] (4) Procedures for operations performed within the high-temperature burn range (Tmax < ST).
[0120] If the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 exceeds the upper limit Tmax of the low-temperature burn temperature range (Tmax < ST), this indicates that the surface temperature ST has changed from a temperature within the low-temperature burn temperature range to a temperature within the high-temperature burn temperature range (the middle part of step S109). Then, the mode controller 101 restarts the electronic device 10 (step S111), turns off the continuous mode (step S112), and performs the procedures to be performed when the continuous mode is turned off (described later) (step S113).
[0121] Figure 12 Illustrated examples of environment screens with warning icons and warning messages.
[0122] Especially during network sharing communication, when the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 is within the low-temperature burn temperature range, the display may be turned off. In this case, the mode controller 101 continuously displays a warning icon 411 and a warning message 412 (similar to warning icon 311 and warning message 312) on the ambient screen 400 (black background).
[0123] (5) Procedure for operations to be performed when continuous mode is off (step S113)
[0124] Figure 13 The diagram illustrates the operation flow of the mode controller when continuous mode is off.
[0125] The mode controller 101 disables the continuous mode (step S201, which is similar to step S112). The continuous mode being disabled means that the electronic device 10 (control circuit 100) is controlled (relaxed) such that the upper limit of the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 is equal to or lower than the upper limit Tmin (first upper limit) of the safe temperature range. In other words, if the continuous mode is disabled, the surface temperature ST will, in principle, not exceed the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range.
[0126] The mode controller 101 periodically (e.g., every few seconds) determines whether the surface temperature ST is within a safe temperature range, a low-temperature burn temperature range, or a high-temperature burn temperature range (step S202, which is similar to step S109). When the surface temperature ST is within a safe temperature range, the mode controller 101 does not perform any special processing (left side of step S202).
[0127] If the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 exceeds the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range (middle part of step S202), the mode controller 101 outputs a warning icon 311 to the main screen 300 (step S203). Furthermore, if the surface temperature ST exceeds the upper limit Tmax of the low-temperature burn temperature range (i.e., the surface temperature ST is within the high-temperature burn temperature range) (right side of step S202), the mode controller 101 restarts the electronic device (step S204).
[0128] II. Second Embodiment
[0129] In the following text, descriptions and examples of components and operations similar to those described above are omitted; the focus will be on the differences from those described above.
[0130] Figure 14 The diagram illustrates the operation flow of the mode controller according to the second embodiment.
[0131] The operations of steps S101 to S103 are the same as those in the first embodiment. Figure 3 The steps S101 to S103 are similar.
[0132] When the input indicates agreement to begin continuous mode (step S103, Yes), the mode controller 101 periodically determines whether a USB cable or an HDMI cable is inserted into the cable interface 19 while the surface temperature ST is within a safe temperature range (step S105, No) (step S115). When a USB cable or an HDMI cable is inserted, the mode controller 101 determines that the electronic device 10 will be used without contact with a human body and begins continuous mode (step S115, Yes).
[0133] On the other hand, when the USB cable or HDMI (registered trademark) cable is not plugged in (step S115, no), the mode controller 101 determines that there is a possibility that the electronic device 10 will be used in contact with a human body, and turns off the continuous mode (step S112). Then, the mode controller 101 performs the procedures to be performed when the continuous mode is turned off (step S113).
[0134] The operations in steps S104 to S107 are the same as those in the first embodiment. Figure 3 The steps S104 to S107 are similar.
[0135] When the mode controller 101 maintains the continuous mode in response to input consent to maintain the continuous mode (step S107, Yes), the mode controller 101 periodically determines whether the USB cable or HDMI cable is inserted into the cable interface 19 while the surface temperature ST is within the low-temperature burn temperature range (left side of step S109) (step S114). When the USB cable or HDMI cable is inserted, the mode controller 101 determines that the electronic device 10 will be used without contact with the human body and maintains the continuous mode (step S114, Yes).
[0136] On the other hand, when the USB cable or HDMI (registered trademark) cable is not plugged in (step S114, no), the mode controller 101 determines that there is a possibility that the electronic device 10 will be used in contact with a human body, and turns off the continuous mode (step S112). Then, the mode controller 101 performs the procedures to be performed when the continuous mode is turned off (step S113).
[0137] As described above, the second embodiment eliminates the need to periodically (step S108, yes) output a sustain inquiry message 314 (step S107) as in the first embodiment. Instead, it determines whether the USB cable or HDMI cable is inserted into the cable interface 19 (steps S115 and S114). When the USB cable or HDMI cable is not inserted, the sustain mode is deactivated (step S112). Therefore, the second embodiment provides user-friendliness without the hassle of requiring the user to grant multiple consents periodically, and maintains sustain mode only when the electronic device 10 is likely to be used without contact with the human body. This results in a high level of security.
[0138] III. Third Embodiment
[0139] In the first embodiment, when no consent is given to the sustain inquiry message 314 (selecting "disagree and close" 316 or timeout) (step S107, no), the mode controller 101 closes the continuous mode (step S112) and terminates functions that can raise the surface temperature to a higher temperature than usual (such as 5G communication using USB network sharing or display of high-definition motion images using HDMI (registered trademark)).
[0140] On the other hand, according to the third embodiment, in the event of a timeout for the maintenance query message 314, when network sharing communication is performed via USB cable, the mode controller 101 maintains the continuous mode without the user's consent.
[0141] As described above, according to the third embodiment, in the event of a timeout for the persistent inquiry message 314, the continuous mode is maintained only when it is highly likely that the electronic device 10 will be used without contact with a human body. This results in a high level of security.
[0142] IV. Conclusion
[0143] Electronic devices, such as smartphones or tablets, are general-purpose devices used by a vast number of end users. Therefore, most users are unaware that the surface temperature of these devices can rise to temperatures that could cause low-temperature burns. In other words, most users are unaware of the potential dangers of these devices. It is also conceivable to attach stickers to electronic devices to make the dangers known and educate users. However, using stickers makes it difficult to adequately educate all users about the dangers. Therefore, typically, when an electronic device performs a function that may raise its surface temperature to higher than usual, as described above, the upper limit of the device's surface temperature is controlled (relaxed) to a level where users are unlikely to be burned (corresponding to the safe temperature range in this embodiment) to ensure the safety of all users. Typically, the performance of the electronic device is reduced (e.g., the upper limit of the clock speed of the control circuitry) to achieve this control (relaxation) so that the surface temperature of the device does not exceed the upper limit. This may result in non-compliance with the required specifications for the electronic device.
[0144] (1) On the other hand, the electronic device 10 according to this embodiment includes a temperature sensor 18 that detects the temperature of a designated part of the electronic device 10, and a mode controller 101 that activates a continuous mode when the electronic device 10 is used without contact with the human body. The continuous mode is a mode that allows the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 to rise to a temperature within the low-temperature burn temperature range. The surface temperature ST is calculated based on the temperature detected by the temperature sensor 18. The low-temperature burn temperature range is the range of temperatures that cause low-temperature burns.
[0145] When the electronic device 10 is used without contact with the human body, this embodiment allows the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 to rise to a temperature within the low-temperature burn temperature range (or the upper limit of the low-temperature burn temperature range) (continuous mode). This results in maintaining (not reducing) the performance level of the electronic device 10. This makes it possible to achieve high performance of the electronic device 10 while ensuring user safety.
[0146] (2) The electronic device 10 also includes a cable interface 19, and when a USB cable or an HDMI (registered trademark) cable is inserted into the cable interface 19, the mode controller 101 determines that the electronic device 10 will be used without contact with the human body (step S101, yes).
[0147] Depending on the function performed by the electronic device 10, the surface temperature ST can rise to a higher temperature than usual. Specific examples of such functions include 5G communication via a USB cable using network sharing, and real-time display of high-definition motion images received via an HDMI (registered trademark) cable. When using these functions, the electronic device 10 can be used without human contact. For example, in the case of network sharing, the user operates a personal computer, so the user does not come into contact with the electronic device 10. Furthermore, in the case of displaying high-definition motion images, the electronic device 10 is placed in a bracket fixed to a camera, and the display of the electronic device 10 functions as a monitor. As described above, when performing functions that might raise the surface temperature ST to a higher temperature than usual while using the electronic device 10 without human contact, a continuous mode is activated. This allows for high performance of the electronic device 10 while simultaneously ensuring user safety.
[0148] (3) In response to enabling the continuous mode (step S102), the mode controller 101 outputs a start query message (step S103), wherein the start query message 214 is a message used to ask whether the user agrees to enable the continuous mode. When the user agrees, the mode controller 101 enables the continuous mode (step S103, yes), and when the user does not agree (step S103, no), the mode controller 101 disables the continuous mode (step S112).
[0149] Obtaining user consent at regular intervals before enabling persistent mode allows for more reliable assurance of user security.
[0150] (4) When the surface temperature ST exceeds the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range while the continuous mode is on (step S105, Yes), the mode controller 101 outputs a maintenance inquiry message 314 (step S107), where the maintenance inquiry message 314 is used to ask whether the user agrees to maintain the continuous mode. When the user agrees, the mode controller 101 maintains the continuous mode (step S107, Yes), and when the user does not agree (step S107, No), the mode controller 101 disables the continuous mode (step S112).
[0151] Obtaining user consent at a timed interval when the surface temperature ST exceeds the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range ensures user safety more reliably. Furthermore, disabling continuous mode when no consent is entered (including in the case of timeout) further ensures user safety. Note that it is sufficient as long as the timeout period is set to a time when it is unlikely to cause low-temperature burns even if the human body remains in contact with the surface of the electronic device 10 (e.g., approximately 1–5 minutes). This prevents the user from being burned by touching the electronic device 10 without noticing the surface temperature ST rising to the low-temperature burn range before the user notices the persistent inquiry message 34. For example, this prevents low-temperature burns caused by the user falling asleep during communication using USB network sharing (i.e., falling asleep while doing something) and touching the electronic device 10 in the same posture for an extended period.
[0152] (5) When the surface temperature ST reaches a specific temperature higher than the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range before the input of consent while the continuous mode is on (step S107, no), the mode controller 101 turns off the continuous mode (step S112).
[0153] "Specific temperature" refers to the temperature at which a low-temperature burn may occur within a shorter contact time than the contact time that would cause a low-temperature burn when a human body remains in contact with the electronic device 10, which has a temperature corresponding to the lower limit Tmin. The state where the surface temperature ST reaches the specific temperature refers to a state where the surface temperature ST has actually risen to a temperature that could suddenly cause a low-temperature burn within a short contact time, even if the user still believes that the electronic device 10 has a safe surface temperature. Touching the electronic device 10 without being aware of this rise in surface temperature ST is dangerous. Therefore, the continuous mode is deactivated when the surface temperature ST reaches the specific temperature, which ensures the user's safety.
[0154] (6) When the mode controller 101 maintains the continuous mode in response to the input of consent, the mode controller 101 periodically outputs a maintenance query message 314 (step S107) while the surface temperature ST is within the low-temperature burn temperature range (step S108, yes). When consent is input, the mode controller 101 maintains the continuous mode (step S107, yes), and when no consent is input (step S107, no), the mode controller 101 closes the continuous mode (step S112).
[0155] While the surface temperature ST is within the low-temperature burn range, users are regularly informed of the dangers and educated, and their consent is obtained, all within a reasonable timeframe. This results in more reliable assurance of user safety.
[0156] (7) The electronic device 10 also includes a cable interface 19. When the mode controller 101 maintains the continuous mode in response to an input of consent, the mode controller 101 periodically determines whether a USB cable or an HDMI cable is inserted into the cable interface 19 while the surface temperature ST is within the low-temperature burn range (step S114). When a USB cable or an HDMI cable is inserted, the mode controller 101 maintains the continuous mode (step S114, Yes), and when no USB cable or HDMI cable is inserted (step S114, No), the mode controller 101 deactivates the continuous mode (step S112).
[0157] This results in user-friendliness without the hassle of repeated periodic user consent, and allows the device 10 to maintain continuous mode only when it is highly likely to be used without human contact. This leads to a high level of security.
[0158] (8) When the surface temperature ST exceeds the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range while the continuous mode is on (step S105, yes), the mode controller 101 maintains the output of warning icon 311 (step S106) and outputs warning message 312 when warning icon 311 is activated.
[0159] This leads to users being informed of dangers and educated at effective time intervals, thus ensuring user safety more reliably.
[0160] (9) When the surface temperature ST drops to or falls below the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range while the continuous mode is on, the mode controller 101 hides the warning icon.
[0161] Therefore, while the surface temperature ST is within the low-temperature burn temperature range, the mode controller 101 maintains the display of the warning icon 311 on the main screen 300. This results in the user being informed of the danger and educated more frequently during effective timing, thus leading to more reliable assurance of user safety.
[0162] (10) When the continuous mode is enabled, the mode controller 101 continues to output the explanation message 301 (step S104) until the surface temperature ST exceeds the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range, wherein the explanation message 301 is a message explaining the continuous mode.
[0163] This results in the continued output of messages in the interpretation mode, namely, messages indicating that the surface temperature ST of the electronic device 10 may rise to a temperature within the low-temperature burn temperature range. This ensures that the user is aware of the potential danger and is educated even when the surface temperature ST does not exceed the upper limit Tmin of the safe temperature range, thus leading to more reliable assurance of user safety.
[0164] (11) When the surface temperature ST exceeds the temperature range of low temperature burn while the continuous mode is on, the mode controller 101 restarts the electronic device 10 (step S111) and turns off the continuous mode (step S112).
[0165] This makes it possible to more reliably ensure user safety.
[0166] (12) Electronic device 10 is a mobile device.
[0167] Electronic device 10, as a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet computer, is a general-purpose device used by a large number of end users. Therefore, most users are unaware that the surface temperature of electronic device 10 can rise to a temperature that could cause low-temperature burns. In other words, most users are not aware of the potential danger of electronic device 10. Therefore, in this embodiment, in response to the possibility that electronic device 10 will be used by a large number of workers, and in response to differences in the level of hazard awareness among users, when the surface temperature ST rises to a temperature within the low-temperature burn temperature range, users are frequently informed of the danger and educated, and their consent is obtained, at an effective time. This results in more reliable assurance of user safety.
