Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention generally relates to a basketball net. More specifically, at least one embodiment relates to a basketball net that removes moisture and bacteria from a basketball when the basketball enters the basket and passes through the net. Background Art

[0002] Referring to FIG. 1, a conventional basketball goal 100 is shown. The basketball goal 100 includes a basket 102, a basketball net 103, and a backboard 104. The basketball goal 100 can be fixed in place such that the basket 102 is positioned at a desired height (e.g., a regulation height) or a lower height when used by children. Although the basketball goal 100 can be wall-mounted, suspended, or otherwise fixed in place, the basketball goal is most often fixed to a pole for recreational basketball play.

[0003] The basketball net 103 is conventionally configured to provide a generally conical shape. The construction material can include cotton, polyester, or metal (links). Regardless of the construction material, a typical basketball net 103 includes a series of openings having generally triangular or diamond-shaped shapes, where the upper portion of the net 103 includes larger openings and the lower portion of the net 103 includes smaller diamond-shaped openings. The ring forming the uppermost opening in the basketball net 103 is attached to the basket 102. When a basketball is thrown through the net 103, the fall of the ball is slowed and the ball is partially guided as it passes through the net 103.

[0004] During a game, the basketball is constantly being passed from hand to hand. During play, some basketball players find the basketball slippery due to the moisture and sweat transferred from their hands to the ball when controlling the ball. A slippery basketball gives the player less control of the ball when dribbling, passing, and shooting. To improve the accuracy of their ball control, players can run to the sidelines and wipe their hands with a towel, or alternatively, wipe their hands with their shorts or jersey to remove some of the moisture. These practices are routine at all levels of play. Additionally, although the effort may temporarily dry the player's hands, it does not remove any moisture from the basketball. Therefore, the underlying problem caused by the sweat on the basketball remains.

[0005] Sometimes, a game or practice will be temporarily stopped in order to wipe the ball with a towel to dry it. However, these interruptions prevent the flow or momentum of the game and are frustrating for the players, coaches, referees, and fans.

[0006] In addition to moisture, bacteria can also be transferred from the player's sweat to the ball and come into contact with the hands. This can lead to a build-up of bacteria as the ball is constantly passed from hand to hand during a game or practice. As the bacteria build up and the basketball is constantly passed around, an increasingly unhygienic situation is created. These situations create an environment where infections can easily spread among the participants.

[0007] In addition, towels available on the sidelines during a basketball game are unhygienic because they are thrown on benches or the gym floor and because the same towel is used repeatedly to wipe away sweat. Thus, wiping the ball with a towel does not reduce bacteria. Instead, the towel may actually spread bacteria onto the ball's surface. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0008] Accordingly, there is a need for devices, systems, and methods for reducing the risk of transmitting infectious diseases through a basketball. There is also a need for devices, systems, and methods that help remove both bacteria and moisture (such as sweat) from a basketball. [0038] The application of the present invention is not limited to the construction details and component arrangements set forth in the following description or shown in the drawings. The present invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Moreover, the language and terminology used herein are for the purpose of description and should not be regarded as limiting. The use herein of "comprising", "including" or "having", "containing", "involving" and variations thereof is intended to cover the items listed thereafter and equivalents thereof as well as additional items.

[0039] Reference Figure 2 , shows a basketball goal 200 including a net 205 according to a first embodiment. The basketball goal 200 also includes a basket 202 and a backboard 204. The basket 202 includes a flange for securing the basket 202 to the backboard 204. The basket 202 also includes a series of hooks evenly spaced at positions around the basket. Various types of support structures (not shown) can be employed to secure the basketball goal 200 in a desired position and height.

[0040] According to the illustrated embodiments, the net 205 includes a first plurality of cords 206, a second plurality of cords 207, a first plurality of knots 208, a second plurality of knots, and a plurality of openings 210. According to the illustrated embodiments, the first plurality of cords 206 are positioned in an upper region of the net 205. The first plurality of cords 206 are referred to as loops and are used to attach the net 205 to the basket 202. According to these embodiments, the second plurality of cords 207 are positioned in a region below the first plurality of cords 206. The second plurality of cords 207 are referred to as the mesh. The loops are attached to the mesh by the first plurality of knots 208. The second plurality of cords 207 are connected to each other by the second plurality of knots 209 to form the openings 210. The openings 210 generally have a substantially triangular or diamond shape, with the knots 208, 209 positioned at some attachment points of the cords 206. The top of the net 205 is attached to the basket 202 using the loops by hooks. As used herein, the term "loop region" refers to the portion of the net 205 between the attachment to the basket 202 and the first plurality of knots 208. As used herein, the term "mesh region" refers to the portion of the net 205 from the first plurality of knots 208 to the bottom of the net 205.

[0041] When the net 205 is fixed to the basket 202 and suspended in a slack state, the net 205 has a generally conical shape. That is, the diameter of the central opening defined by the top of the net 205 is substantially the same as the inner diameter of the opening defined by the basket 202. In each case, the diameter is slightly larger than the outer diameter of a basketball. However, the upper half of the net 205 tapers inwardly such that the central region and the lower region (i.e., the mesh region) of the net 205 define a central opening in the net, the diameter of which is less than the diameter of the opening at the top of the net 205. Thus, the central opening in the lower half of the net 205 is smaller than the outer diameter of a basketball. According to one embodiment, the net 205 has a length of 15" to 18", and the cords 206 are made of a braided material with a thread count between 30 and 120 threads.

[0042] When a basketball falls through the net 205, the construction of the net provides a dynamic response to the basketball. Specifically, when the basketball enters the basket 202 and enters the net 205, the openings 205 are temporarily deformed. The deformation temporarily shortens the total length of the net 205 and temporarily increases the inner diameter of the central opening in the central region and the lower region of the net 205. As a result, the downward fall of the basketball is slowed, and its direction of travel is affected to reduce the distance traveled from the basketball goal 200 when the ball exits the net 205.

[0043] According to the illustrated embodiments, the net 205 has a conventional appearance but has wicking, moisture-absorbing, odor-resistant, and / or antibacterial properties. According to one embodiment, the cord 206 comprises a conventional basketball net 205 made of woven fibers (e.g., cotton, polyester, or other materials). According to some embodiments, the construction material is selected because the material has wicking properties. The net 205 can be treated with antibacterial chemicals or compounds. According to some embodiments, the antibacterial compound is sprayed onto the surface of the net 205. According to other embodiments, the net 205 is immersed in an antibacterial solution. According to other embodiments, the net 205 is made of a high-performance material having antibacterial properties inherent in the material. For example, the thread or yarn used to weave the cord 206 can include inherent antibacterial properties while also promoting moisture movement and / or moisture absorption. According to additional embodiments, the cord 206 can comprise a plurality of individual woven cords that are woven together or secured within another fiber sheath or another material (e.g., a moisture-wicking material). In one embodiment, when the plurality of individual cords are woven separately and then loaded into a sheath or otherwise joined together, the individual cords comprise the same wicking, moisture-absorbing, odor-resistant, and / or antibacterial properties. According to another embodiment, each of the individual cords provides a subset of the desired properties throughout the net 205. For example, a first type of cord can include antibacterial properties. A second type of cord can include wicking and / or moisture-absorbing properties. In this embodiment, the first type of cord and the second type of cord are woven, loaded into a sheath, joined, or otherwise secured together to provide the entire net 205 with each of the desired properties.

[0044] According to an embodiment, compounds or materials containing silver or copper can be used to achieve antibacterial properties. According to another embodiment, antibacterial properties are provided by soaking the net 205 in a solution having a high ethanol content. According to one embodiment, the solution comprises at least 60% ethanol. According to one embodiment, the net 205 is treated with a gel containing at least 60% ethanol. Using ethanol is suitable when moisture on the net 205 is not a problem. The rapid drying property of ethanol is also advantageous because the surface of the basketball can be cleaned for any length of time without leaving moisture on the ball.

[0045] According to additional embodiments, only the cords 206 in a limited area of the net 205 have wicking, moisture-absorbing, and / or antibacterial properties. For example, the cords 206 in either or both of the central area and the lower area of the net 205 comprise a high-performance material having any one or any combination of wicking, moisture-absorbing, and / or antibacterial properties. In one embodiment, conventional materials are used for the cords in the upper half of the net 205, and high-performance materials form the lower half of the net 205. The high-performance cords can be attached to the lower ends of the conventional upper cords by splicing, tying loops, and / or applying adhesives using knots.

[0046] In yet another embodiment, a set of cords is added to either or both of the central region and the lower region of the net 205. In this embodiment, the set of cords added is made of a high-performance material having any one or any combination of wicking moisture, absorbing moisture, and / or antibacterial properties. The set of cords added may be attached to the cord 206 at one or both ends of the cords added. In a first method, the cords added dangle downward from their attachment points, with the opposite ends free to move when the ball passes through the net 205 into the basket. In either method, the set of cords added is positioned inside the net 205 to ensure contact between the cords added and the ball.

[0047] When in use, the net 205 operates to wipe the surface of the basketball each time a shot passes through the net 205. In this way, the antibacterial and moisture-wicking properties are applied to various portions of the outer surface of the ball in order to clean and dry the ball in a manner that removes sweat and removes or inhibits microbial growth.

[0048] Now referring to Figure 3 , a basketball goal 300 including an outer basketball net 305 and an inner basketball net 315 according to a second embodiment is shown. The basketball goal 300 also includes a basket 312 and a backboard 314. The basket 312 includes a flange for securing the basket 312 to the backboard 314. The basket 312 further includes a series of hooks evenly spaced apart at positions around the basket 312. Various types of support structures (not shown) may be employed to secure the basketball goal 300 in a desired position and height.

[0049] According to the illustrated embodiment, the inner net 315 includes a plurality of cords 316, a plurality of attachment points 318A, 318B, 318C, and a plurality of openings 319. The cords 316 are connected to each other at the attachment points 318A, 318B, 318C to form the openings 319. The openings 319 in the regions between the cords 316 generally have a substantially triangular or diamond-like shape. The top of the inner net 315 is attached to the basket 312 using hooks. According to the illustrated embodiment, the outer net 305 and the inner net 315 are attached to the basket using the same set of hooks. When the net 315 is fixed to the basket 312 and suspended in a slack state, the size of the openings 319 positioned in the upper region of the net 315 is larger than the size of the openings 319 positioned in the lower half of the net. For example, the opening 319 at the top of the net 315 fixed to the basket 312 provides the largest opening 319. Additionally, when suspended from the basket 312 in a slack state, the inner net 315 has a generally conical overall shape. That is, the diameter of the central opening defined by the top of the inner net 315 is substantially the same as the inner diameter of the opening defined by the basket 312. In each case, the diameter is slightly larger than the outer diameter of a basketball. However, the upper half of the inner net 315 tapers inwardly such that the central region and the lower region of the inner net 315 define a central opening in the net, and the diameter of the central opening is less than the diameter of the opening at the top of the inner net 315. Thus, the central opening in the lower half of the inner net 315 is smaller than the outer diameter of a basketball. When a basketball passes through the inner net 315, the construction of the inner net provides a dynamic response to the basketball, as described above with reference to net 205.

[0050] The inner net 315 can be made of a high-performance material having wicking, moisture-absorbing, odor-resistant, and / or antibacterial properties. The antibacterial, wicking, moisture-absorbing, and / or odor-resistant properties can be achieved using reference Figure 2Any of the methods described above with respect to the net 205 is provided. For example, antimicrobial properties can be provided by treating the material of the inner net 315 with an antimicrobial compound. According to some embodiments, the antimicrobial compound is sprayed onto the surface of the inner net 315, i.e., onto the surface of the cord 316. According to other embodiments, the inner net 315 is immersed in an antimicrobial solution to provide a cord 316 having antimicrobial properties. According to other embodiments, the cord 316 included in the inner net 315 is made of a high-performance material having antimicrobial properties inherent in the manufacturing material. According to any of the foregoing embodiments, the inner net 315 includes a cord 316 made of braided synthetic fibers. According to some embodiments, the tightness of the braid is adjusted to enhance the wicking moisture and / or antimicrobial properties of the inner net 315. For example, a looser braid can provide an increased surface area for applying the antimicrobial compound by increasing the available surface area of the cord 316. A looser braid can also enhance the wicking moisture ability of the cord 316. According to other embodiments, a tighter braid is used to provide a greater mass of material available for wicking and absorbing moisture from the surface of the ball.

[0051] Attachment points 318A, 318B, 318C are used to secure different segments of the cord 316 to each other. This maintains the overall shape of the inner net 315 through repeated use. For example, the inner diameter of the inner net 315 and the generally conical shape of the net 315 are maintained by securing different segments of the cord 316 to each other at the attachment points 318A, 318B, 318C. According to an embodiment, the attachment points 318A, 318B, 318C can include knots, stitches, or a combination of the foregoing to secure different cords 316 to each other. Additionally, as described with reference to Figure 5 The thickness of the material in the attachment area can be increased to increase the contact pressure applied to the basketball when the basketball enters the basket through the inner net 315. In various embodiments, this feature helps to remove sweat from the basketball while also helping to clean the outer surface of the basketball to remove bacteria when the basketball passes through the inner net 315.

[0052] According to the illustrated embodiment, when suspended from the basket 312, the inner net 315 has a generally conical shape. However, the length and average diameter of the inner net 315 are less than the length and average diameter of the outer net 305. This allows the inner net 315 to be received within the outer net 305.

[0053] In various embodiments, the outer net 305 is constructed of a traditional and standard basketball net made of materials such as cotton or polyester for indoor and outdoor play or chain link metal for outdoor play. According to some embodiments, the inner net 315 is sewn or otherwise attached to the outer net 305 at selected locations. This close integration of the inner net 315 with the outer net 305 can help give the basketball goal 300 a traditional appearance. According to another aspect, the manner in which the inner and outer nets are sewn together allows the combined net to look like a standard basketball net and function as such while also providing wicking / absorbing moisture and antimicrobial properties.

[0054] According to still further embodiments, the inner net 315 can be installed and removed independently of the outer net 305. These embodiments provide the flexibility to allow an athlete or group of athletes to access a basketball court (e.g., a public basketball court) having a wicking / absorbing moisture and antimicrobial inner net 315. The inner net 315 can be temporarily secured to the basket 312 in a conventional manner to position the inner net 315 within the conventional outer net 305. Athletes can participate in practices or games with the inner net 315 installed to improve their performance and player safety. Specifically, the wicking moisture aspect of the inner net 315 delivers a drier ball to the athlete after a successful shot. The antimicrobial aspect of the inner net 315 reduces the risk of infection transmission between athletes via the ball. The owner of the inner net 315 can remove the inner net 315 after the practice or game is completed and leave the conventional inner net 305 in place for other athletes to continue using.

[0055] Regardless of whether the inner net 315 and the outer net 305 are permanently attached to each other, the net can be removed to allow the inner net 315 to be removed for reapplication of the antimicrobial compound. For example, the compound is applied by spraying the antimicrobial compound onto the surface of the inner net 315 or dipping the inner net 315 in an antimicrobial solution or gel.

[0056] Now referring Figure 4 , a front view of a basketball goal 300 according to a second embodiment is shown. Figure 4 The outer net 305, the basket 312, the backboard 314, and the inner net 315 are shown. Figure 4 The inner diameter D of the basket 312 is also shown. As is apparent in Figure 4 , both the inner diameter of the inner net 315 and the inner diameter of the outer net 305 are substantially equal to the inner diameter D at the point where the nets 305, 315 are attached to the basket 312.

[0057] Some embodiments include a net having regions of increased thickness to increase the contact pressure exerted by the net on the surface of the basketball. Now referring Figure 5, an embodiment of a basketball goal includes a basketball net 525, the basketball net including cords 526, a first set of knots 528, and a second set of knots 530. The net 525 is constructed from the cords 526 and knots 528, 530 so as to define a series of openings 529 in the manner generally described above with reference to Figure 2 and 3 substantially described. The generally conical shape of the net 525 includes an upper region 532, a central region 534, and a lower region 536. The second set of knots 530 includes a plurality of knots 531, the plurality of knots including a high-performance material having any one or any combination of wicking, moisture-absorbing, odor-resistant, and / or antibacterial properties.

[0058] In various embodiments, the outer diameter of the plurality of knots 531 is larger than the outer diameter of a conventional knot. The larger diameter may be the result of adding a material having any one of wicking, moisture-absorbing, odor-resistant, and / or antibacterial properties. These properties may be provided in the manner described above with respect to nets 205 and 315. Further according to an embodiment, the increased diameter may be achieved by "double knotting" the connection points between the cords or adding additional material to wrap around the outside of a knot of otherwise conventional dimensions (e.g., knot 528). According to one embodiment, the net 525 is a conventional net made of woven fibers (e.g., cotton, polyester, or other material). In this embodiment, the net 525 may have wicking, moisture-absorbing, odor-resistant, and / or antibacterial properties only at the plurality of knots 531. According to another embodiment, the entire net is made of a high-performance material having wicking, moisture-absorbing, odor-resistant, and / or antibacterial properties. In either embodiment, the high-performance material is wrapped around the conventional knot as an additional layer to create a denser surface area that will allow additional contact and friction with the ball as the ball passes through the net.

[0059] According to the illustrated embodiment, the plurality of knots 530 includes a first knot 531A, a second knot 531B, a third knot 531C, and a fourth knot 531D. Although not shown, these larger-diameter knots may be positioned 360 degrees around the net 525. In the illustrated embodiment, the upper region 532 does not include any large-diameter knots 530. The lower region 536 also does not include any large-diameter knots 530. Instead, the second set of knots 530 is disposed in the central region 534. The central region 534 has the smallest inner diameter. Thus, the maximum amount of contact and contact pressure between the net 525 and the basketball is available in the central region 534. With the second set of knots 530 positioned in the central region 534, the basketball experiences the maximum amount of wiping pressure as the ball enters the basket through the net 525.

[0060] Now refer to Figure 6A and 6B, which shows the construction details of a basketball net 640 according to various embodiments. The basketball net 640 is constructed from a cord 642, which includes an outer cord 644 and an inner cord 646. According to an embodiment, the cord 642 can be used to construct any one of the following: Refer to Figure 2 the net 205 shown and described; Refer to Figure 3 the outer basketball net 305 and / or the inner basketball net 315 described; Refer to Figure 5 the net 525 shown and described. Given the disclosure provided herein, it will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art that in various alternative embodiments, the cord 642 can be used to construct other types of basketball nets or other nets for sports equipment. According to various embodiments, either or both of the outer cord 644 and the inner cord 646 include antibacterial and moisture-wicking properties. In these embodiments, the construction of the cord used in the basketball net provides a layered construction having an outer layer provided by the outer cord 644 and an inner layer provided by the inner cord 646. The applicant has found that using antibacterial, moisture-wicking fibers in both the inner and outer layers provides a very effective method for reducing the moisture and microorganisms that would otherwise be present on the outer surface of the basketball during use.

[0061] According to the illustrated embodiment, the inner cord 646 includes a plurality of cords, which includes a first cord 647, a second cord 648, and a third cord 649. In various embodiments, the materials and construction of the first cord 646, the second cord 648, and the third cord 649 are selected together such that the inner cord 646 provides a combination of antibacterial and moisture-wicking properties with the strength and durability required for a basketball net. According to one embodiment, the outer cord 644 is made of an antibacterial moisture-wicking yarn, which is woven into a cord to form a wall that defines a hollow central region that extends axially along the longitudinal axis of the cord. For example, Figure 6B a cross-sectional view of the cord 642 is provided. The cross-sectional view shows the hollow central region 643 formed within the outer cord 644. According to the illustrated embodiment, each of the first cord 647, the second cord 648, and the third cord 649 is axially positioned within the hollow central region 643. In various embodiments, each of the outer cord 644 and the inner cord 646 is flexible. Thus, the shape of the hollow central region can vary dynamically during use. Similarly, the three inner cords 647, 648, 649 can flex within the hollow central region 643 and can contact each other and / or the inner region of the wall formed by the outer cord 644. According to one embodiment, AEROSILVER antibacterial moisture-wicking yarn can be used to manufacture each of the outer cord 644 and the inner cord 646.

[0062] According to various embodiments, the outer drawstring 644 is made of a synthetic yarn that is antibacterial and wicks moisture (e.g., a polyester yarn). In some embodiments, the yarn includes nanoparticles within the yarn volume. In additional embodiments, the nanoparticles can include silver, copper, combinations of the foregoing, or combinations of any of the foregoing and nanoparticles that include other materials. In some embodiments, the yarn is manufactured such that the nanoparticles are substantially uniformly distributed within the yarn. In one embodiment, the outer drawstring 644 is made of polyester fibers woven with silver nanoparticles.

[0063] The applicant has found that when the inner drawstrings 647, 648, 649 provide a combination of these features, the overall strength, antibacterial, and moisture-wicking performance of the net 640 are improved. Additionally, using multiple inner drawstrings can improve both the performance and manufacturability of the net 640. According to some embodiments, the first drawstring 647 is made entirely of a synthetic yarn that is antibacterial and wicks moisture. In one embodiment, the first drawstring 647 can include a plurality of yarns that include the antibacterial and moisture-wicking characteristics. According to one embodiment, the linear density of the antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn used to manufacture the first drawstring 467 is 300 denier or greater. According to another embodiment, the first drawstring 647 includes four yarns having the same denier and the same antibacterial and moisture-wicking characteristics.

[0064] According to some embodiments, the second drawstring 648 includes both a synthetic yarn that is antibacterial and wicks moisture and a monofilament yarn. For example, the second drawstring 648 can include a combination of yarns that include a synthetic yarn that is antibacterial and wicks moisture and a monofilament yarn woven together.

[0065] According to one embodiment, the third drawstring 649 is manufactured as a synthetic monofilament, e.g., polyethylene that does not include antibacterial or moisture-wicking characteristics. In additional embodiments, a plurality of polyethylene monofilaments are included in the third drawstring 649. According to one embodiment, twenty individual synthetic monofilaments are included in the third drawstring 649.

[0066] The inner drawstring 646 manufactured using the foregoing embodiments of the first drawstring 647, second drawstring 648, and third drawstring 649 provides an antibacterial and moisture-wicking net 640 that has a strength and durability suitable for long-term use while also delivering a net material that rapidly absorbs moisture to allow the net 640 to maintain a dry feel during use with a basketball that may be covered in sweat.

[0067] In additional embodiments, the construction materials of the first cord 647, the second cord 648, and the third cord 649 can be varied respectively to increase selected characteristics of the basketball net 640. For example, by including antimicrobial and moisture-wicking fibers in each of the three cords 647, 648, 649, the antimicrobial and moisture-wicking characteristics can be increased. According to one embodiment, each of the first cord 647, the second cord 648, and the third cord 649 is made of only antimicrobial and moisture-wicking yarns respectively. In other instances, by including single fibers in each of the three cords 647, 648, 649, the strength and durability of the basketball net 640 are improved. According to one embodiment, each of the first cord 647, the second cord 648, and the third cord 649 is made of only single fibers respectively. In yet another embodiment, each of the first cord 647, the second cord 648, and the third cord 649 includes both antimicrobial moisture-wicking yarns and single fiber yarns respectively. For example, each of the three cords 647, 648, 649 can include a combination of yarns that includes antimicrobial moisture-wicking yarns and single fiber yarns woven together.

[0068] According to some embodiments, the first plurality of cords 206 are configured to be different from the second plurality of cords 207. These embodiments can be used to increase the strength and durability of the loop region of the net (i.e., the upper region of the net directly attached to the basket) relative to the mesh (or lower) region of the net. For example, the first plurality of cords 206 can include an outer cord of antimicrobial, moisture-wicking fibers, as described above with reference to the outer cord 644, and include inner cords in which there are no antimicrobial, moisture-wicking fibers. In one embodiment, the first plurality of cords 206 are constructed using three inner cords positioned within the hollow central region formed by the outer cord, where each of the three inner cords includes only single fiber yarns.

[0069] The antimicrobial and moisture-wicking fibers and yarns described herein are silver-infused. For example, embodiments of the basketball nets 205, 305, 525, and 640 include silver nanoparticle polyester fibers and can be made by melt blends. In addition to the silver nanoparticle resin, the blend can include one or more of the following: UV stabilizers, antioxidants, nitrogen oxide gas yellowing inhibitors, adhesion promoters, dechlorinating agents, quenchers, or other elements alone or in combination with one or more of the foregoing. According to some embodiments, these additives can be added to the melt blend together with the antimicrobial silver nanoparticle resin.

[0070] The applicant has found that the strength of available antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarns may not be sufficient for use in a basketball net. For example, the applicant has found that a 150 denier antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn by itself is not suitable for constructing a basketball net. According to some embodiments, a conventional antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn (e.g., a conventional yarn made of AEROSILVER) is covered by another antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn to increase the linear density and strength of the yarn. This covered antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn is then used to manufacture the outer cord 644. The covered antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn can also be used to manufacture the first cord 647 and the second cord 648. According to one embodiment, the antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn used to construct the basketball net 640 comprises a first antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn having a first denier and a first yarn count, the first antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn being covered by a second antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn having a second denier and a second yarn count. In various embodiments, the first antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn and the second antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn have the same denier as each other and the same yarn count as each other. According to these embodiments, the denier and yarn count of the antibacterial and moisture-wicking yarn produced by covering the first yarn with the second yarn are twice the denier and yarn count of the individual yarns. As used herein, the terms "cover", "covering", or "covered" when referring to the construction of a yarn mean wrapping at least one yarn around another yarn.

[0071] While the foregoing has described various embodiments that include one or more materials that are combined to construct the basketball net 640, other combinations of manufacturing techniques and materials may also be employed in some embodiments. For example, in some embodiments, an antibacterial solution may be applied to the basketball net. The foregoing includes embodiments of applying an antibacterial spray to a net that includes antibacterial fibers and also includes embodiments of applying an antibacterial spray to a basketball net having a conventional construction. According to one embodiment, an emulsion is sprayed onto a silver-infused fabric used to construct the basketball net. Additionally, the embodiments described with reference to the basketball net 640 may include different variations to provide a desired combination of antibacterial, moisture-wicking, and durability properties. In one embodiment, the outer cord 644 includes antibacterial and moisture-wicking fibers, but the inner cord 646 does not. In this embodiment, the inner cord 646 may be made of only single fibers to maximize the strength and durability of the net 640.

[0072] In another embodiment, the inner cord 646 includes antibacterial and moisture-wicking fibers, but the outer cord 644 does not. In this embodiment, the net construction can improve the antibacterial and moisture-wicking properties of the net when compared to a conventional net while still providing a durable and long-lasting product.

[0073] In yet another embodiment, a plurality of antimicrobial pins are positioned within the hollow central region 643 of the net 640. According to an embodiment, a "pin" may comprise a solid or tubular cylindrical element having antimicrobial properties. The pins may be provided in various lengths to allow use at different locations in either or both of the loop region and the mesh region of the net.

[0074] When in use, the net 640 wipes the surface of the basketball each time the ball passes through the net 640 during a basket. The outer cord 644 provides a first layer to wick moisture wiped from the surface of the basketball. In this way, the antimicrobial and moisture-wicking properties are applied to various portions of the outer surface of the ball so as to clean and dry the ball in a manner that removes sweat and removes or inhibits microbial growth. According to some embodiments, the outer cord 644 comprising antimicrobial properties also traps bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms carried by the absorbed moisture. Additionally, the inner cord 646 provides a second layer to wick moisture from the outer cord 644 to the interior region of the cord. This further reduces the likelihood that an athlete will come into contact with moisture containing microorganisms. The applicant has found that using moisture-wicking antimicrobial fibers in multiple layers removes moisture from the exterior of the net 640 such that when the outer surface of the net becomes wet, the net feels almost immediately dry.

[0075] Given the size of the sports memorabilia market, the market for unique tangible items directly related to a sporting event or athlete has received significant attention. Historically, these items have been created in an organized manner, such as folding chairs removed from an arena or other venue prior to renovation or demolition of the venue, a series of sports equipment used during an event, or photographs capturing a decisive moment of a game or other sporting event.

[0076] In today's world, the brands of teams and athletes are a significant part of the value creation of any sports memorabilia item. FIGS. 7-13 show various durable, removable markers that can include customized branding and be affixed to a basketball net to create a sports memorabilia item. According to some embodiments, the removable marker includes branding for marketing purposes. That is, the marker can promote the brand being displayed during the time the marker is adhered to the net. The basketball net is the focus of fan attention, whether present at the game or watching on TV / video. Thus, the marketing markers included on the marker affixed to the front of the net will be repeatedly viewed by fans. The various embodiments allow for a durable marker that can be easily and securely fastened to a basketball net. Additionally, any form of the marking can be printed on the front surface of the marker. These forms can include alphabetic and numeric text as well as artwork. According to one embodiment, a logo or other marking is applied to the front surface of the marker using heat transfer technology. These embodiments are also configured such that the marker does not interfere with the game and can be quickly removed by hand without the use of any tools. The marker is also configured to be securely attached to the net such that the marker does not pose a risk of injury to the player and also does not interfere with the performance of the net.

[0077] Now referring to Figures 7A - 7D , a marker 750 according to a first embodiment is shown. Figure 7A A front view of the marker 750 is shown. The marker 750 includes a body 752, a front surface 753, and a plurality of tabs 754A-754D. Each of the plurality of tabs 754A, 754B, 754C, and 754D extends radially outward from a respective corner of the body 752. A logo 755 is positioned at the center of the front surface 753. According to some embodiments, the marker 750 is made of a synthetic material that includes elastic fibers (e.g., Lycra or Spandex synthetic fibers).

[0078] Figure 7BShows a rear view of marker 750. In various embodiments, the rear sides of the plurality of tabs 745A - 754D include an adhesive. The rear side includes a rear surface 757 and a plurality of adhesive regions 756A - 756D, each adhesive region being positioned on the rear surface of one of the plurality of tabs 745A - 754D. Marker 750 also includes a central adhesive region 758 positioned on the rear surface 757. Non - adhesive regions 761 are present between each of the adhesive regions 756A - 756D and the central adhesive region 758. In some embodiments, the surface area of the non - adhesive regions 761 is controlled by selecting the desired radius of the central adhesive region 758 and the radial length of each of the plurality of adhesive regions 756A - 756D. Appropriate selection of these dimensions provides sufficient space to position cord 760 included in a basketball net. Specifically, when the tabs 745A - 745D are folded backward, the dimensions are determined to allow cord 760 to be securely enclosed while avoiding contact between cord 760 and the central adhesive region 758 or any of the plurality of adhesive regions 756A - 756D. The applicant has found that this prevents damage to cord 760, which would otherwise occur.

[0079] Figure 7C Shows a front view of marker 750 in a configuration in which the plurality of tabs 754A - 754D are folded backward to place each of the plurality of tabs 754A - 754D in contact with the rear portion of marker 750, as shown and described in more detail below with reference to Figure 7E According to this embodiment, folding backward allows each of the plurality of adhesive regions 756A - 756D to be placed in contact with the central adhesive region 758. In various embodiments, the bond formed between each of the respective plurality of adhesive regions 756A - 756D and the central adhesive region 758 is strong but temporary. According to various embodiments, VELCRO hook - and - loop fastening material is used for each of the plurality of adhesive regions 756A - 756D and the central adhesive region 758. In various embodiments, other forms of adhesives may be used if they will remain securely attached while also providing a releasable attachment when subjected to the typical wear and tear that a basketball net undergoes. In various embodiments, the adhesive strength and fastening method allow the marker to be removed from the net by hand without the use of tools. These alternative fastening devices may include snaps, laces, other mechanical fastening devices, or glues that provide a releasable bond.

[0080] Figure 7DShows a front view of marker 750, where the marker is fixed to cord 760 contained within a basketball net. When attached as shown, the front surface 753 of the body 752 is unobstructed when viewed from the net. This clearly shows logo 755 when attached to the net. Additionally, the attachment method provides a secure attachment for the marker at each of the four corners.

[0081] As Figure 7E shown, when in operation, each of the plurality of tabs 754A - 754D folds backward toward the rear surface 757 to wrap around cord 760. Each of the plurality of tabs 754A - 754D is pressed against the body 752 to engage. This presses each of the corresponding adhesive areas contained in the plurality of adhesive areas 756A - 756D against the central adhesive area 758. Thus, the cord is securely captured within the corners of marker 750. The applicant has found that adhesives such as Velcro fasteners can cause wear or other damage to the cord when the cord is repeatedly placed in contact with each other. Both the shape and position of the adhesive allow marker 750 to be firmly and temporarily fastened to the basketball net using marker 750 without contact between the adhesive area located on the back of marker 750 and cord 760. The applicant has found that the combination of the shape of marker 750 and the size and shape of the plurality of adhesive areas 756A - 756D and the central adhesive area 758 respectively provides the benefits described herein.

[0082] Now refer to Figures 8A - 8D , which shows a marker according to a second embodiment. Figure 8A Shows a front view of marker 850. Marker 850 includes a body 852, a front surface 853, and a plurality of tabs 862A - 862D.
