Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to skin care lotion compositions containing cleansing polymers, and in particular the skin care lotions are stable viscous compositions containing cleansing polymers such as acrylates, taurate copolymers and natural or naturally derived emulsifiers such as cetearyl olivate and sorbitan olivate. Background Art
[0002] Some consumers want skin care products to be effective, have a silky texture, absorb quickly into the skin, and be formulated without petroleum-derived ingredients, ethoxylated ingredients, sulfates, parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, and mineral oil.
[0003] Polymers are frequently used in skin care products to enhance the viscosity of the product and can also act as moisturizers. Many skin care products contain a variety of polymers, which may include polyacrylamide, petroleum-derived ingredients (e.g., isoparaffins, petrolatum), and / or ethoxylated ingredients. However, some consumers prefer products that are formulated without these ingredients, and may also want products that meet the requirements to be marketed under the name "Clean at Sephora" (see Best Clean Beauty Products 2022. Sephora. "Clean at Sephora", retrieved on June 13, 2022 from www.sephora.com / beauty / clean-beauty-products, is an initiative by the beauty retailer to label more than 2,000 products as "clean," which in this case means free of ingredients such as sulfates, parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, and mineral oil.
[0004] One polymer that can be used in these cleaning products is a copolymer of acrylates and taurates (e.g., Sodium Acrylate / Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer & C15-19 Alkane & Polyglyceryl-6 Laurate & Polyglyceryl-6, available as SEPILIFE TM NUDE is available from Seppic.) Such polymers deliver excellent texture, feel and performance while also meeting the definition of "clean" in Sephora standards.
[0005] The polymer is typically provided as a dispersed phase in the oil and is part of the continuous phase of an oil-in-water emulsion. Emulsifiers can facilitate the formation of the emulsion and can also help maintain product stability. However, many traditional emulsifiers do not meet the "Clean at Sephora" guideline method and therefore may not be liked by some consumers. Other emulsifiers are incompatible with the copolymer of acrylate and taurate thickeners, for example, and the product is not a stable emulsion, it has a silky texture that can be quickly absorbed by the user's skin.
[0006] Therefore, there is a need for one or more emulsifiers that are compatible with the copolymer of acrylates and taurate to form a stable emulsion, are non-ethoxylated and are clean. In some instances, it is also desirable for the emulsifier to be natural, naturally derived and / or biodegradable. Summary of the invention

[0015] Figure 5 Shows the setup of the adhesion method DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0016] Skin care compositions may contain synthetic polymers. The polymers can enhance the texture and viscosity of the composition. However, these polymers may contain polyacrylamide, petroleum-derived ingredients, and / or ethoxylated ingredients. Some consumers prefer products that are formulated without these ingredients while also being clean. One polymer that has found use in these cleansing products is a copolymer of acrylates and taurates, such as sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer, such as sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer & C15-19 alkane & polyglyceryl-6 laurate & polyglyceryl-6 (can be SEPILIFE TM NUDE is commercially available from Seppic), such as Figure 1Another polymer that can be used is Sodium Acrylate / Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer & C15-19 Alkane & Lauryl Glucoside (available from Natursol TM EMI132 from SNF TM Commercially available).
[0017] In skin care compositions, polymers are typically provided in oil and then converted to become part of the continuous phase in an oil-in-water emulsion. It can be difficult to form a stable emulsion, especially if the skin care product is a moisturizer with a relatively high oil content. Emulsifiers can facilitate the formation of the emulsion and can also help maintain product stability.
[0018] However, it is difficult to select one or more emulsifiers to effectively increase the viscosity of the composition and form a stable emulsion in products containing acrylate and taurate copolymers. In addition, many consumers want cleaning products that can include one or more natural, naturally derived and / or biodegradable emulsifiers.
[0019] In addition, it may be advantageous that one or more emulsifiers are effective because emulsifiers are generally used at the lowest level that provides the desired product viscosity and stability to obtain optimal product performance. If the emulsifier is only effective when used at relatively high levels, the product may be difficult to spread and may remain on top of the skin as a white layer rather than being absorbed into the skin. In these cases, the product may also feel heavy and / or sticky. In addition, it may be advantageous if there is a synergistic effect between the polymer and the emulsifier, which may allow the emulsifier to be incorporated at even lower levels, thereby producing a smooth, lightweight moisturizer with sufficient viscosity.
[0020] Skin care compositions may include a range of emollients that soften, moisturize and / or protect the skin from irritation, as well as aid in the solubilization of various skin care benefit ingredients. These emollients may have a range of polarities, and regardless of the polarity of the emollient, it may be advantageous to select an emulsifier that is effective in the skin composition system.
[0021] Example BJ (see Tables 1 to 3 below) is prepared with a clean and natural or naturally derived emulsifier. These examples are compared with Examples A-1 and 2 (see Table 1 below) including PEG-100 stearate as an emulsifier, which is currently used in some commercial products. Examples A-1 and 2 have sufficient viscosity (1082 Pa*s and 842 Pa*s, respectively), indicating that the emulsifier is compatible with sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer. However, some consumers prefer to be formulated into skin care products without PEG. Regarding Example BJ, three emulsifiers (see Examples E, G and H) have sufficient viscosity (e.g., ≥550 Pa*s) for a composition including a non-polar emollient (isohexadecene) and a more polar emollient (triheptanoin). However, it was found that the emollient from Example H can be accepted by consumers because the composition not only has sufficient viscosity, but also has a silky, smooth texture, and no obvious unpleasant odor. The emulsifiers in Examples H-1 and 2 are cetearyl olivate and sorbitan olivate (can be 1000 from Commercially available). Similar emulsifiers including waxy esters made from fatty alcohols and fatty acids derived from natural sources with carbon chain lengths ranging from C12-C22 are believed to be compatible with the sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer.
[0022] The composition may include at least 50% natural or naturally derived ingredients, alternatively at least 60%, alternatively at least 70%, alternatively at least 75%, alternatively at least 80%, alternatively at least 85%, and alternatively at least 90%. In some examples, one or more ingredients, other than naturally derived, have a molecular weight of greater than 60% of natural origin, alternatively greater than 70%, alternatively greater than 80%.
[0023] In some examples, the composition can be formulated to be free, substantially free, or free of the following ingredients: triethanolamine, ethanol, glyceryl monostearate, sodium hydroxide, sodium chloride, tocopherol, and combinations thereof. Some consumers consider these ingredients to be irritating and / or acne-causing. In some examples, the composition can be formulated to be free, substantially free, or free of silicone.
[0024] Adhesion usually refers to the peak force required for separating an object from the composition after contacting the composition. At least some users associate good moisturizing with high adhesion, especially during and / or shortly after application of the product (e.g., less than 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 or even less than 1 minute after application). However, the increase in adhesion is usually accompanied by an increase in viscosity, and the moisturizing agent feels heavy on the top of the user's skin. Although the user can tolerate or even expect to have some stickiness and / or heaviness as a signal of moisturizing during and / or after application, it may not be expected that stickiness continues for example more than 1, 5, 7, 10 or even more than 20 minutes after application of the product.
[0025] The composition may have an average adhesion of less than 750 g between 20 minutes and 40 minutes, alternatively less than 725 g, alternatively less than 710 g, and alternatively less than 705 g. The composition may have an average adhesion of about 250 g to about 750 g between 20 minutes and 40 minutes, alternatively about 400 g to about 725 g, alternatively about 500 g to about 710 g, and alternatively about 550 g to about 705 g.
[0026] In addition, the composition can be a physically stable emulsion. The composition is physically stable if there is no phase separation or less than a 40% change in viscosity by visual inspection when stored in a finger-tightly closed glass jar between t=0 (i.e., immediately after preparation of the composition) and between freeze-thaw cycles, wherein the sample is kept at -18°C for 24 hours and then returned to room temperature, or stored at 40°C for one month and then returned to room temperature. As used herein, "visual inspection" means that a human observer can visually discern whether the product separates into two distinct layers in a 2 ounce clear glass jar with the naked eye (except for standard corrective lenses suitable for correcting myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism or other corrective vision) under lighting at least equal to the illumination of a standard 100-watt incandescent bulb at 30 cm.
[0027] Unless otherwise specifically stated, all percentages are by weight of the cosmetic composition. Unless otherwise specifically stated, all ratios are by weight. All ranges are inclusive and combinable. The number of significant figures expresses neither a limitation on the amount shown nor a limitation on the accuracy of the measurement. All numerical values should be understood to be modified by the word "about", unless otherwise specifically stated. Unless otherwise stated, all measurements are understood to be made at approximately 25°C and ambient conditions, where "ambient conditions" means conditions at about 1 atmosphere and about 50% relative humidity. All numerical ranges are narrower ranges including the end values; the upper and lower limits of the ranges described are interchangeable to further form ranges that are not explicitly described.

The skin care composition may hydrate to visibly firmer skin for an enhanced appearance. The skin composition may strengthen the skin's moisture barrier, making the skin elastic, firm and younger looking. The skin care composition may reduce and / or soften wrinkles and fine lines.
[0096] Test Method
[0097] Adhesion method
[0098] The method provides a suitable means for determining the viscosity of the compositions described herein. The method uses a texture analyzer to contact a probe with a film formed by the composition. The texture analyzer then measures the force required to separate the probe from the composition film. Adhesion can be measured in this way. The adhesion method is configured to run for 100 minutes. Without being limited by theory, it is believed that the adhesion properties exhibited by the composition during the adhesion test are similar to the adhesion properties exhibited by the composition within the first few minutes (e.g., less than 10 minutes, between 30 seconds and 5 minutes, or between 1 minute and 3 minutes) of the user using the composition.
[0099] Figure 5 An exemplary test apparatus for adhesion testing is shown. A TA.XT2i brand texture analyzer (available from Texture Technologies Corporation (MA)) 50 or equivalent is used to measure the adhesion of a film formed from a composition of interest. The texture analyzer is equipped with an adhesion probe 52 in the form of a 12.75 mm diameter acrylic cylinder having a flat surface. During the test, the flat surface of the probe 52 is brought into contact with the surface of the film of the composition. Therefore, the flat surface of the probe and the surface of the film must be parallel to each other during the test to ensure that the film has sufficient contact over the entire effective test surface of the probe 52. The film is prepared by filling or overfilling a rectangular channel 54 (e.g., 25 cm long × 30 mm wide × 0.25 mm deep) with the composition to be tested (and then pulling it down).
[0100] Adhesive test scheme is used to test with the pre-test speed of 0.10mm / s, the test speed of 0.10mm / s and the post-test speed of 1.0mm / s. The force applied is 200g, the return distance is 4mm, and the contact time is 5.0s. The trigger type of the designated sample contact is set to automatic, and the trigger force is 5.0g. The test is run and immediately after the film is prepared, it is run with the following time increments: <1 minute (that is, immediately after the film is prepared), 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 40 minutes, 50 minutes, 60 minutes, 80 minutes and 100 minutes. Each time point is run on the previously undisturbed / untested area of the sample. Each sample is run in parallel three times, and the average value is recorded.
[0101] The average tack between 20 minutes and 40 minutes can be used to determine if the product is too sticky to be accepted by consumers. To calculate the average tack between 20 minutes and 40 minutes, add the tack at 20 minutes, 30 minutes, and 40 minutes and divide by 3 and report in grams (g).
[0102] Rheological test methods
[0103] This method provides a suitable means for measuring the viscosity of the compositions herein. The instrument used in this method is a TA Instruments brand rheometer or equivalent. The instrument is set up to perform a rotating ramp under controlled stress conditions, from 0.01 Pa to 2000 Pa in 240 seconds, using serrated parallel plates of 40 mm diameter and 1.0 mm gap for the upper and lower geometries. The temperature is set to 25°C. The instrument protocol is set to collect 100 data points per decade of logarithmic distribution, with the shear rate exceeding 110s -1 Set to stop measuring.
[0104] After performing the automatic gap calibration, approximately 5 grams of sample are placed in the center of the plate. The plate is positioned to provide a gap of 1.05 mm, and any excess material extruded from the peripheral gap of the parallel plates is carefully trimmed. The plate is then moved the last 0.05 mm to provide a gap of 1.00 mm, and the measurement is started. At the end of the run, the data file is saved for subsequent plotting and analysis. Viscosity is reported in Pascal-seconds (PaS) for a shear rate of 0.10 s -1 or close to 0.10s -1 The value at time.
[0105] Example
[0106] The following data and examples are provided to help illustrate the skin care compositions described herein. The exemplified compositions are given for illustrative purposes only and should not be construed as limitations of the present disclosure, as many variations are possible without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure. Unless otherwise indicated, all parts, percentages and ratios herein are by weight.
[0107] The examples in Tables 1 to 3 and 5 to 11 below are prepared by the following method. First, an aqueous phase is prepared by mixing water and water-soluble ingredients, including but not limited to glycerin, chelating agents (e.g., disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate, EDDS), water-soluble skin care actives (e.g., panthenol), and antioxidants (e.g., hydroxyacetophenone). The aqueous phase is mixed and heated to about 50° C. until the ingredients are dissolved and / or dispersed. The aqueous phase may contain from about 70% to about 98%, alternatively from about 75% to about 95%, alternatively from about 80% to about 94%, alternatively from about 85% to about 93%, or alternatively from about 88% to about 92% water by weight of the aqueous phase.
[0108] In a second container, prepare an oil phase premix. The premix includes a liquid emollient and a waxy emollient and one or more emulsifiers. The premix is mixed and heated to about 50°C until the ingredients are fully dispersed in the premix.
[0109] The premix is added to the water phase. The mixture is then ground to emulsify the oil phase premix into the water phase to form an emulsion in which the water phase is the continuous phase and the oil phase is the dispersed phase. One or more additional ingredients are added after emulsification while continuously mixing with an overhead mixer. Additional ingredients, including but not limited to polymeric thickeners (e.g., SEPILIFE TM NUDE、NATURSOL TM EMI 132), silicones, colorants, pigments, powders, mica, preservatives, fragrances and additional skin actives.
[0110] The viscosities of the examples in the table below were determined using the Rheology Test Method as disclosed herein.
[0111] For Tables 1 to 3 below and Figure 2 In the embodiments detailed in, various clean, natural and / or naturally derived emulsifiers without cetearyl alcohol were tested in skin care compositions including sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer and other ingredients. Each emulsifier was tested in a composition containing an emollient including isohexadecane (a non-polar hydrocarbon oil) or triheptanoin (a triglyceride with greater polarity than isohexadecane). If the emulsifier helps to form sufficient viscosity, as indicated by the rheological test method described herein, such as when the composition has a viscosity greater than or equal to 550 Pa*s, the emulsifier may be acceptable to consumers. This viscosity is considered to be the minimum necessary to produce an acceptable composition that can be packaged in a can that is opened during consumer use, and compositions with higher viscosities may be more popular with consumers, and in some embodiments, the viscosity can be increased by adding more emulsifiers and / or polymers. It is preferred to select an emulsifier that produces a composition containing isohexadecene and triheptanol emollients of sufficient viscosity because this shows that the emulsifier develops viscosity in a range of products having different emollient polarities. In addition, many skin care products use more than one emollient of different polarities to help solubilize various skin care benefit ingredients, including ingredients that improve skin texture, tone, or protect against UV damage.
[0112] Some embodiments are made with modified corn starch, and other embodiments are made with maize corn starch (which may be HTP Pure Commercially available). It was found that there was no significant difference in viscosity and stability when formulated with either starch. It was found that in some large-scale production, maize corn starch may be preferred.

[0136] The emulsifier used in Examples A-1 and 2 includes PEG-100 stearate emulsifier, a polyethylene glycol ester of stearic acid. These compositions have a viscosity acceptable to consumers. However, some consumers prefer compositions that are PEG-free, natural or naturally derived, and / or biodegradable.
[0137] Examples BJ include a PEG-free and clean emulsifier. In addition, the emulsifier in Examples BJ is natural or naturally derived and biodegradable. Examples where the viscosity of both emollients is greater than or equal to 550 Pa*s are Examples E, G and H. Examples E-1 and 2 are not preferred because both examples have a significant malodor that will be unpleasant to many consumers.
[0138] Example G-1 may be acceptable to consumers. However, Example G-2 is noticeably tacky, which makes the product difficult to spread on the user's skin, and the product may feel heavy and sticky after application. This emulsifier may not be preferred because it does not produce a consumer preferred product in a range of emollients (see Figure 3 , Table 4, and additional text for additional data and discussion regarding the viscosity of Example G-2).
[0139] Examples H-1 and 2 both have a viscosity greater than or equal to 550 emollients and no significant unpleasant odor. In addition, both examples are stable emulsions with a smooth, silky texture. The emulsifier in Examples H-1 and 2 is cetearyl olive oil ester. It is believed that other emulsifiers including waxy ester mixtures made from fatty alcohols and fatty acids derived from natural sources with carbon chain lengths ranging from C12 to C22 (e.g., olive, palm, corn, palm, rapeseed, soybean, sunflower, coconut, tallow, rapeseed oil, castor oil) can be used in stable skin care compositions with sufficient viscosity (e.g., ≥550 Pa*s).
[0140] Figure 3Table 4 shows the adhesion of Examples G-2 (Table 2) and H-2 (Table 3). Adhesion was measured according to the Adhesion Test Method described herein. Both Examples included the emollient triheptanoin at 6.0% and 0.20% of the emulsifier, respectively. The emulsifier in Example G-2 was polyglyceryl-3 cetearyl ether olive oil emulsifier (can be Bioten Commercially available). Figure 2 Examples G-1 and 2 are shown to have the highest viscosities of Inventive Examples BJ, which initially indicates Bioten may be preferred by consumers. However, Figure 3 Table 4 shows that Example G-2 has greater adhesion than Example H-2, especially in the 20-minute to 40-minute time range of the Adhesion Method. The higher adhesion is significant in that Example G-2 is expected to feel sticky and tacky, especially when compared to Example H-2.
[0141] Table 4
[0142]
[0143] Figure 4 The viscosities of Examples H-1 and H-2 (see Table 3) are shown after preparation, after freeze / thaw cycles and under accelerated stability conditions (i.e., after 2 weeks storage at 50° C. and after 1 month storage at 40° C.). If the viscosity does not change by more than 40% under these conditions, the composition is considered stable and acceptable to the consumer. Figure 4 It is shown that both Examples H-1 and H-2 meet the stability criteria and are acceptable to consumers.
[0144] The skin care composition examples in Tables 5-9 were prepared and are believed to be stable, have adequate viscosity, and are acceptable to consumers.
