Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of an invention patent application with an application date of November 5, 2020, application number 202080075932.6, and invention name “Indication of User Equipment Capabilities for Beam Failure Detection and Beam Management”. Technical Field

[0002] The following relates generally to wireless communications, and more particularly to indication of user equipment (UE) capabilities for beam failure detection and beam management. Background Art

[0003] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, etc. These systems may be able to support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power). Examples of such multiple access systems include fourth generation (4G) systems such as long term evolution (LTE) systems, advanced LTE (LTE-A) systems, or LTE-A Pro systems, and fifth generation (5G) systems that may be referred to as new radio (NR) systems. These systems may employ techniques such as code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), or discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiple access (DFT-S-OFDM). A wireless multiple access communication system may include one or more base stations or one or more network access nodes, each of which simultaneously supports communication with multiple communication devices, which may be referred to as user equipment (UE).

[0004] In a wireless communication system utilizing beamforming, a UE and a base station may communicate using multiple uplink beams and downlink beams. To facilitate such communication, a UE may perform beam failure detection (BFD) and generate beam measurements for a particular beam. Conventional BFD and beam monitoring techniques have drawbacks. Summary of the invention

[0005] The described technology relates to improved methods, systems, devices and apparatuses for supporting indication of user equipment (UE) capabilities for beam failure detection (BFD) and beam management. In some cases, the capability may indicate a defined number (e.g., a maximum value) of resources or beams that the UE is capable of monitoring or using for communication. Based on the capabilities of the UE, the base station may send a monitoring configuration to the UE indicating a set of resources (e.g., link quality monitoring resources, CSI measurement RS resources, RS resources) or an active beam set that the UE is to monitor or use for communication in one or more component carriers (CCs). [0176] In some wireless communication systems, the complexity of beam failure detection (BFD) performed by a user equipment (UE) may be based on a defined number (e.g., a maximum number) of channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) resources or synchronization signal blocks across multiple component carriers (CCs) that the UE is able to monitor. BFD in conventional wireless communication systems may not take into account the frequency of CSI-RS resources or SSB resources to be monitored within a given duration. As a result, a base station may attempt to configure a UE to monitor more resources than the UE is able to monitor within a given duration, which may result in unsatisfactory performance. In addition, a beam management (BM) measurement complexity may be based on a maximum number of CSI-RS resources or SSB resources for layer 1 (e.g., L1) reference signal received power (RSRP) (e.g., L1-RSRP) across all CCs in a transmission time interval (TTI) such as a time slot. Some BM measurement procedures may not include resources for L1 signal to interference plus noise ratio (L1-SINR) as an option for reporting a metric, because the BM procedure may only include resources for L1-RSRP reporting as a metric. As a result, interference may negatively impact data throughput, and legacy procedures may lack a mechanism for reporting interference observed by a UE on a specific beam. Legacy procedures may also lack a definition of the duration of a TTI, which prevents the UE from meaningfully reporting how many beams the UE supports, how many resources the UE can monitor, etc. within a given duration. Specifically, in the case of mixed parameter sets across CCs, a common definition of a TTI may lead to ambiguity in the indicated monitoring resources and / or UE capabilities to support multiple beams.

[0177] In some wireless communication systems, when a transmission configuration indicator (TCI) state identifier (ID) set for a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) is activated by a medium access control (MAC) control element (MAC-CE) for at least a set of CCs or bandwidth parts (BWPs) for the same frequency band, the applicable CC list may be indicated by radio resource control (RRC) signaling, and the same TCI state ID set may be applied to all BWPs in the indicated CCs. Applying the same TCI state ID set to all BWPs in the indicated CCs may lead to ambiguity in the definition of the number of active downlink beams, uplink beams, or both, resulting in the wireless network exceeding the number of active downlink or uplink beams that a UE can simultaneously support for uplink or downlink transmissions in some cases.

[0178] Various aspects of the present disclosure are initially described in the context of a wireless communication system. Various aspects of the present disclosure are then described in the context of a process flow. Various aspects of the present disclosure are further illustrated and described with reference to apparatus diagrams, system diagrams, and flow charts relating to indication of UE capabilities for BFD and beam management.

[0179] Figure 1 An example of a wireless communication system 100 that supports indication of UE capabilities for BFD and beam management in accordance with various aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The wireless communication system 100 may include one or more base stations 105, one or more UEs 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may be a long term evolution (LTE) network, an advanced LTE (LTE-A) network, an LTE-A Pro network, or a new radio (NR) network. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may support enhanced broadband communications, ultra-reliable (e.g., mission-critical) communications, low-latency communications, communications with low-cost and low-complexity devices, or any combination thereof.

[0180] The base stations 105 may be dispersed throughout a geographic area to form the wireless communication system 100, and may be different forms of devices or devices with different capabilities. The base stations 105 and the UEs 115 may communicate wirelessly via one or more communication links 125. Each base station 105 may provide a coverage area 110 over which the UEs 115 and the base stations 105 may establish one or more communication links 125. The coverage area 110 may be an example of a geographic area over which the base stations 105 and the UEs 115 may support communication of signals according to one or more radio access technologies.

[0181] The UEs 115 may be dispersed throughout the coverage area 110 of the wireless communication system 100, and each UE 115 may be stationary, or mobile, or both at different times. The UEs 115 may be different forms of devices or devices with different capabilities. Figure 1 Some example UEs 115 are shown in FIG. The UEs 115 described herein may be capable of communicating with various types of devices, such as Figure 1 Other UEs 115, base stations 105, or network equipment (eg, core network nodes, relay devices, integrated access and backhaul (IAB) nodes, or other network equipment) are shown.

[0182] The base stations 105 may communicate with the core network 130, or the base stations 105 may communicate with each other, or both. For example, the base stations 105 may interface with the core network 130 via one or more backhaul links 120 (e.g., via S1, N2, N3, or other interfaces). The base stations 105 may communicate with each other via the backhaul links 120 (e.g., via X2, Xn, or other interfaces) directly (e.g., directly between the base stations 105) or indirectly (e.g., via the core network 130), or both. In some examples, the backhaul links 120 may be or include one or more wireless links.

[0183] The one or more base stations 105 described herein may include or may be referred to by those skilled in the art as a base station transceiver, a radio base station, an access point, a radio transceiver, a NodeB, an eNodeB (eNB), a next generation NodeB or a giga NodeB (any of which may be referred to as a gNB), a Home NodeB, a Home eNodeB, or other suitable terminology.

[0184] UE 115 may include or be referred to as a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a handheld device, or a subscriber device, or some other suitable terminology, where "device" may also be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, a client, and other examples. UE 115 may also include or be referred to as a personal electronic device, such as a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a tablet computer, a laptop computer, or a personal computer. In some examples, UE 115 may include or be referred to as a wireless local loop (WLL) station, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, an Internet of Everything (IoE) device, a machine type communication (MTC) device, etc., which may be implemented in various objects such as appliances, vehicles, meters, etc.

[0185] The UE 115 described herein may be capable of communicating with various types of devices, such as Figure 1Other UEs 115 as well as base stations 105 and network equipment including macro eNBs or gNBs, small cell eNBs or gNBs, relay base stations, etc. are shown, which may sometimes act as relays.

[0186] UE 115 and base station 105 can communicate with each other wirelessly via one or more communication links 125 on one or more carriers. The term "carrier" can refer to a set of radio spectrum resources with a defined physical layer structure for supporting communication link 125. For example, a carrier for communication link 125 may include a portion of a radio frequency spectrum band (e.g., BWP) operated according to one or more physical layer channels of a given radio access technology (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, NR). Each physical layer channel may carry acquisition signaling (e.g., synchronization signals, system information), control signaling for coordinating operations for carriers, user data, or other signaling. The wireless communication system 100 may support communication with UE 115 using carrier aggregation or multi-carrier operation. According to the carrier aggregation configuration, UE 115 may be configured with multiple downlink CCs and one or more uplink CCs. Carrier aggregation can be used with both frequency division duplex (FDD) and time division duplex (TDD) CCs.

[0187] In some examples (e.g., in a carrier aggregation configuration), a carrier may also have acquisition signaling or control signaling that coordinates the operation of other carriers. A carrier may be associated with a frequency channel (e.g., an Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System Terrestrial Radio Access (E-UTRA) Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number (EARFCN)) and may be located according to a channel grid for discovery by a UE 115. A carrier may operate in a standalone mode, where initial acquisition and connection may be performed by a UE 115 via the carrier, or a carrier may operate in a non-standalone mode, where a different carrier (e.g., with the same or different radio access technology) is used to anchor the connection.

[0188] The communication link 125 shown in the wireless communication system 100 may include an uplink transmission from the UE 115 to the base station 105, or a downlink transmission from the base station 105 to the UE 115. A carrier may carry downlink or uplink communications (e.g., in FDD mode), or may be configured to carry both downlink and uplink communications (e.g., in TDD mode).

[0189] A carrier may be associated with a particular bandwidth of a radio frequency spectrum, and in some examples, the carrier bandwidth may be referred to as the "system bandwidth" of the carrier or wireless communication system 100. For example, the carrier bandwidth may be one of a plurality of determined bandwidths of a carrier for a particular radio access technology (e.g., 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, or 80 megahertz (MHz)). A device of the wireless communication system 100 (e.g., a base station 105 or a UE 115 or both) may have a hardware configuration that supports communication on a particular carrier bandwidth, or may be configured to support communication on one of the carrier bandwidths in a carrier bandwidth set. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may include a base station 105 or a UE 115 that supports simultaneous communication via carriers associated with multiple carrier bandwidths. In some examples, each served UE 115 may be configured to operate on a portion (e.g., a subband, a BWP) or all of a carrier bandwidth.

[0190] The signal waveform transmitted on the carrier may be composed of multiple subcarriers (e.g., using multicarrier modulation (MCM) techniques such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM)). In a system employing MCM techniques, a resource element may be composed of a symbol period (e.g., the duration of a modulation symbol) and a subcarrier, where the symbol period and the subcarrier spacing are inversely related. The number of bits carried by each resource element may depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme, the codec rate of the modulation scheme, or both). Therefore, the more resource elements received by UE 115 and the higher the order of the modulation scheme, the higher the data rate of UE 115 may be. Wireless communication resources may refer to a combination of radio frequency spectrum resources, time resources, and spatial resources (e.g., spatial layers or beams), and the use of multiple spatial layers may also increase the data rate or data integrity of communications with UE 115.

[0191] One or more numerologies may be supported for a carrier, where the numerologies may include subcarrier spacing (Δf) and cyclic prefixes. A carrier may be divided into one or more BWPs with the same or different numerologies. In some examples, a UE 115 may be configured with multiple BWPs. In some examples, a single BWP for a carrier may be active at a given time, and communications by the UE 115 may be limited to one or more active BWPs.

[0192] The time interval of the base station 105 or the UE 115 may be expressed as a multiple of a basic time unit, which may be, for example, T s =1 / (Δf max ·N f ) seconds sampling period, where Δf maxIt can represent the maximum supported subcarrier spacing, and N f The maximum supported discrete Fourier transform (DFT) size may be indicated. The time intervals of the communication resources may be organized according to radio frames each having a specified duration (e.g., 10 milliseconds (ms)). Each radio frame may be identified by a system frame number (SFN) (e.g., ranging from 0 to 1023).

[0193] Each frame may include multiple consecutively numbered subframes or time slots, and each subframe or time slot may have the same duration. In some examples, the frame may be divided (e.g., in the time domain) into subframes, and each subframe may be further divided into multiple time slots. Alternatively, each frame may include a variable number of time slots, and the number of time slots may depend on the subcarrier spacing. Each time slot may include multiple symbol periods (e.g., depending on the length of the cyclic prefix placed before each symbol period). In some wireless communication systems 100, the time slot may also be divided into multiple mini-slots containing one or more symbols. Excluding the cyclic prefix, each symbol period may contain one or more (e.g., N f ) sampling period. The duration of a symbol period may depend on the subcarrier spacing or the operating frequency band.

[0194] A subframe, a time slot, a mini-time slot, or a symbol may be a minimum scheduling unit (e.g., in the time domain) of the wireless communication system 100 and may be referred to as a TTI. In some examples, the TTI duration (e.g., the number of symbol periods in a TTI) may be variable. Additionally or alternatively, the minimum scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 may be dynamically selected (e.g., in a burst of a shortened TTI (sTTI)).

[0195] Physical channels may be multiplexed on a carrier according to various techniques. For example, physical control channels and physical data channels may be multiplexed on a downlink carrier using one or more of a time division multiplexing (TDM) technique, a frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technique, or a hybrid TDM-FDM technique. A control region (e.g., a control resource set (CORESET)) of a physical control channel may be defined by a number of symbol periods and may extend across the system bandwidth of a carrier or a subset of the system bandwidth. One or more control regions (e.g., CORESETs) may be configured for a group of UEs 115. For example, one or more UEs 115 may monitor or search for a control region for control information according to one or more search space sets, and each search space set may include one or more control channel candidates in one or more aggregation levels arranged in a cascaded manner. The aggregation level of a control channel candidate may refer to the number of control channel resources (e.g., control channel elements (CCEs)) associated with coded information of a control information format having a given payload size. A search space set may include a common search space set configured to send control information to multiple UEs 115 and a UE-specific search space set for sending control information to a specific UE 115.

[0196] Each base station 105 can provide communication coverage via one or more cells (e.g., macro cells, small cells, hot spots, or other types of cells, or any combination thereof). The term "cell" may refer to a logical communication entity used to communicate with the base station 105 (e.g., via a carrier), and may be associated with an identifier (e.g., a physical cell identifier (PCID), a virtual cell identifier (VCID), or other identifier) used to distinguish adjacent cells. In some examples, a cell may also refer to a geographic coverage area 110 or a portion of a geographic coverage area 110 (e.g., a sector) on which a logical communication entity operates. Depending on various factors such as the capabilities of the base station 105, the range of these cells may range from smaller areas (e.g., structures, subsets of structures) to larger areas. For example, a cell may be or include a building, a subset of a building, or an external space between or overlapping a geographic coverage area 110, etc.

[0197] A macro cell typically covers a relatively large geographic area (e.g., a radius of several kilometers) and may allow unrestricted access to a UE 115 with a service subscription to a network provider that supports the macro cell. Compared to a macro cell, a small cell may be associated with a low-power base station 105, and the small cell may operate in the same or different (e.g., authorized, unauthorized) frequency band as the macro cell. A small cell may provide unrestricted access to a UE 115 with a service subscription to a network provider, or may provide restricted access to a UE 115 with an association to a small cell (e.g., a UE 115 in a closed subscriber group (CSG), a UE 115 associated with a user in a home or office). A base station 105 may support one or more cells, and may also support communications on one or more cells using one or more CCs.

[0198] In some examples, a carrier may support multiple cells, and different cells may be configured according to different protocol types (e.g., MTC, narrowband IoT (NB-IoT), enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB)) that may provide access to different types of devices.

[0199] In some examples, base stations 105 may be mobile and, therefore, provide communication coverage for mobile geographic coverage areas 110. In some examples, different geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may overlap, but the different geographic coverage areas 110 may be supported by the same base station 105. In other examples, overlapping geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may be supported by different base stations 105. The wireless communication system 100 may include, for example, a heterogeneous network in which different types of base stations 105 provide coverage for various geographic coverage areas 110 using the same or different radio access technologies.

[0200] The wireless communication system 100 may support synchronous or asynchronous operation. For synchronous operation, the base stations 105 may have similar frame timing, and transmissions from different base stations 105 may be approximately aligned in time. For asynchronous operation, the base stations 105 may have different frame timing, and in some examples, transmissions from different base stations 105 may not be aligned in time. The techniques described herein may be used for synchronous or asynchronous operation.

[0201] Some UEs 115, such as MTC or IoT devices, may be low-cost or low-complexity devices and may provide automatic communication between machines (e.g., via machine-to-machine (M2M) communication). M2M communication or MTC may refer to data communication technology that allows devices to communicate with each other or with a base station 105 without human intervention. In some examples, M2M communication or MTC may include communications from devices that integrate sensors or meters to measure or capture information and relay such information to a central server or application that utilizes the information or presents it to a person interacting with the application. Some UEs 115 may be designed to collect information or enable automated behavior of machines or other devices. Examples of applications for MTC devices include smart metering, inventory monitoring, water level monitoring, equipment monitoring, healthcare monitoring, wildlife monitoring, weather and geological event monitoring, fleet management and tracking, remote security sensing, physical access control, and transaction-based service charging.

[0202] Some UEs 115 may be configured to employ a reduced power consumption mode of operation, such as half-duplex communication (e.g., a mode supporting unidirectional communication via transmission or reception but not simultaneous transmission and reception). In some examples, half-duplex communication may be performed at a reduced peak rate. Other power saving techniques for UE 115 include entering a power saving deep sleep mode when not engaged in active communications, or operating over a limited bandwidth (e.g., according to narrowband communications), or a combination of these techniques. For example, some UEs 115 may be configured to operate using a narrowband protocol type associated with a defined portion or range (e.g., a subcarrier or resource block (RB) set) within a carrier, within a guard band of a carrier, or outside a carrier.

[0203] The wireless communication system 100 can be configured to support ultra-reliable communication, or low-delay communication, or various combinations thereof. For example, the wireless communication system 100 can be configured to support ultra-reliable low-delay communication (URLLC) or mission-critical communication. UE 115 can be designed to support ultra-reliable, low-delay or critical functions (e.g., mission-critical functions). Ultra-reliable communication can include private communication or group communication, and can be supported by one or more mission-critical services (such as mission-critical push-to-talk (MCPTT), mission-critical video (MCVideo), or mission-critical data (MCData). Support for mission-critical functions can include prioritization of services, and mission-critical services can be used for public safety or general commercial applications. The terms ultra-reliable, low-delay, mission-critical, and ultra-reliable low-delay are used interchangeably herein.

[0204] In some examples, UE 115 may also be able to communicate directly with other UE 115 via a device-to-device (D2D) communication link 135 (e.g., using a peer-to-peer (P2P) or D2D protocol). One or more UEs 115 utilizing D2D communication may be within a geographic coverage area 110 of a base station 105. Other UEs 115 in such a group may be outside the geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105 or otherwise unable to receive transmissions from the base station 105. In some examples, groups of UEs 115 communicating via D2D communication may utilize a one-to-many (1:M) system in which each UE 115 transmits to each other UE 115 in the group. In some examples, the base station 105 facilitates resource scheduling for D2D communication. In other cases, D2D communication is performed between UEs 115 without the involvement of the base station 105.

[0205] In some systems, the D2D communication link 135 can be an example of a communication channel (such as a sidelink communication channel) between vehicles (e.g., UE 115). In some examples, vehicles can communicate using vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, or some combination of these communications. Vehicles can signal information about traffic conditions, signal scheduling, weather, safety, emergency events, or any other information related to the V2X system. In some examples, vehicles in a V2X system can communicate with roadside infrastructure such as roadside units, or communicate with a network via one or more network nodes (e.g., base station 105) using vehicle-to-network (V2N) communication, or communicate with both.

[0206] The core network 130 may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 130 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) or a 5G core (5GC), which may include at least one control plane entity (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME), an access and mobility management function (AMF)) for managing access and mobility, and at least one user plane entity (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW), a packet data network (PDN) gateway (P-GW), or a user plane function (UPF)) for routing packets to or interconnecting with an external network. The control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management of UE 115 served by a base station 105 associated with the core network 130. User IP packets may be transmitted through user plane entities, which may provide IP address allocation and other functions. The user plane entity may be connected to a network operator IP service 150. The operator IP service 150 may include access to the Internet, (one or more) intranets, an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS), or a packet-switched streaming service.

[0207] Some network devices, such as base stations 105, may include subcomponents such as access network entities 140, which may be examples of access node controllers (ANCs). Each access network entity 140 may communicate with UE 115 through one or more other access network transport entities 145, which may be referred to as radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmit / receive points (TRPs). Each access network transport entity 145 may include one or more antenna panels. In some configurations, the various functions of each access network entity 140 or base station 105 may be distributed across various network devices (e.g., radio heads and ANCs), or merged into a single network device (e.g., base station 105).

[0208] The wireless communication system 100 may operate using one or more frequency bands typically in the range of 300 megahertz (MHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz). Generally, the region from 300 MHz to 3 GHz is referred to as the ultra-high frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the length of the wavelength ranges from about 1 decimeter to 1 meter. UHF waves may be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features, but these waves can penetrate structures sufficiently to allow macro cells to provide services to UEs 115 located indoors. Transmission of UHF waves may be associated with smaller antennas and shorter ranges (e.g., less than 100 kilometers) compared to transmission of smaller frequencies and longer waves in the high frequency (HF) or very high frequency (VHF) portions of the spectrum below 300 MHz.

[0209] The wireless communication system 100 may also operate in the super high frequency (SHF) region (also known as the centimeter band) using a frequency band from 3 GHz to 30 GHz, or in the extremely high frequency (EHF) region of the spectrum (e.g., from 30 GHz to 300 GHz) (also known as the millimeter band). In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may support millimeter wave (mmW) communications between the UE 115 and the base station 105, and the EHF antennas of each device may be smaller and more closely spaced than the UHF antennas. In some examples, this may facilitate the use of antenna arrays within the device. However, the propagation of EHF transmissions may be subject to even greater atmospheric attenuation and a shorter range than SHF or UHF transmissions. The techniques disclosed herein may be employed across transmissions using one or more different frequency regions, and the designated use of frequency bands across these frequency regions may vary by country or regulatory agency.

[0210] The wireless communication system 100 can utilize both the licensed video spectrum band and the unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band. For example, the wireless communication system 100 can adopt licensed assisted access (LAA), LTE unlicensed (LTE-U) radio access technology, or NR technology in an unlicensed band such as the 5GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band. When operating in an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band, devices such as base stations 105 and UEs 115 can use carrier sensing for collision detection and avoidance. In some examples, operations in unlicensed bands can be based on a combination of carrier aggregation configurations and CCs operating in licensed bands (e.g., LAA). Operations in unlicensed spectrum can include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, P2P transmissions, or D2D transmissions, and the like.

[0211] The base station 105 or UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas, which may be used to employ technologies such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, or beamforming. The antennas of the base station 105 or UE 115 may be located within one or more antenna arrays or antenna panels that may support MIMO operations, or transmit or receive beamforming. For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be co-located at antenna accessories such as antenna towers. In some examples, the antennas or antenna arrays associated with the base station 105 may be located at different geographical locations. The base station 105 may have an antenna array with multiple rows and columns of antenna ports, which the base station 105 may use to support beamforming for communications with the UE 115. Similarly, the UE 115 may have one or more antenna arrays that may support various MIMO or beamforming operations. Additionally or alternatively, the antenna panel may support radio frequency beamforming for signals sent via the antenna ports.

[0212] The base station 105 or UE 115 can use MIMO communication to exploit multipath signal propagation and increase spectral efficiency by sending or receiving multiple signals via different spatial layers. This technology may be referred to as spatial multiplexing. Multiple signals may be sent, for example, by a transmitting device via different antennas or different combinations of antennas. Similarly, multiple signals may be received by a receiving device via different antennas or different combinations of antennas. Each of the multiple signals may be referred to as a separate spatial stream and may carry bits associated with the same data stream (e.g., the same codeword) or different data streams (e.g., different codewords). Different spatial layers may be associated with different antenna ports for channel measurement and reporting. MIMO technology includes single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO) in which multiple spatial layers are sent to the same receiving device and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) in which multiple spatial layers are sent to multiple devices.

[0213] Beamforming (which may also be referred to as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception) is a signal processing technique that can be used at a transmitting device or a receiving device (e.g., a base station 105, a UE 115) to shape or steer an antenna beam (e.g., a transmit beam or a receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting device and the receiving device. Beamforming can be achieved by combining signals communicated via antenna elements of an antenna array so that some signals propagating at a particular orientation relative to the antenna array experience constructive interference, while other signals experience destructive interference. Adjustments to signals communicated via antenna elements may include the transmitting device or the receiving device applying an amplitude offset, a phase offset, or both to signals carried via antenna elements associated with the device. Adjustments associated with each antenna element may be defined by a set of beamforming weights associated with a particular orientation (e.g., relative to the antenna array of the transmitting device or the receiving device, or relative to some other orientation).

[0214] The base station 105 or the UE 115 may use beam scanning techniques as part of a beamforming operation. For example, the base station 105 may use multiple antennas or antenna arrays (e.g., antenna panels) to perform beamforming operations for directional communications with the UE 115. Some signals (e.g., synchronization signals, reference signals (RS), beam selection signals, or other control signals) may be sent multiple times by the base station 105 in different directions. For example, the base station 105 may send signals according to different sets of beamforming weights associated with different transmission directions. Transmissions in different beam directions may be used (e.g., by a transmitting device such as the base station 105, or a receiving device such as the UE 115) to identify the beam direction for subsequent transmission or reception by the base station 105.

[0215] Some signals, such as data signals associated with a particular receiving device, may be sent by base station 105 in a single beam direction (e.g., a direction associated with a receiving device, such as UE 115). In some examples, a beam direction associated with transmissions along a single beam direction may be determined based on signals sent in one or more beam directions. For example, UE 115 may receive one or more of the signals sent by base station 105 in different directions, and UE 115 may report to base station 105 an indication of the signal it received having the highest signal quality or other acceptable signal quality.

[0216] In some examples, transmissions by a device (e.g., base station 105 or UE 115) may be performed using multiple beam directions, and the device may generate a combined beam for transmission (e.g., from base station 105 to UE 115) using a combination of digital precoding or radio frequency beamforming. UE 115 may report feedback indicating precoding weights for one or more beam directions, and the feedback may correspond to a configured number of beams across a system bandwidth or one or more subbands. Base station 105 may send RS (e.g., cell-specific RS (CRS), channel state information RS (CSI-RS)) that may be precoded or unprecoded. UE 115 may provide feedback for beam selection, which may be a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) or codebook-based feedback (e.g., a multi-panel type codebook, a linear combination type codebook, a port selection type codebook). Although these techniques are described with reference to signals sent by base station 105 in one or more directions, UE 115 may employ similar techniques to send signals multiple times in different directions (e.g., to identify a beam direction for subsequent transmission or reception by UE 115), or to send signals in a single direction (e.g., to send data to a receiving device).

[0217] When receiving various signals such as synchronization signals, RS, beam selection signals, or other control signals from the base station 105, the receiving device (e.g., UE 115) can try multiple reception configurations (e.g., directional listening). For example, the receiving device can try multiple reception directions by receiving via different antenna subarrays, processing received signals according to different antenna subarrays, receiving according to different reception beamforming weight sets (e.g., different directional listening weight sets) applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of the antenna array, or processing received signals according to different reception beamforming weight sets applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of the antenna array, any of which can be referred to as "listening" according to different reception configurations or reception directions. In some examples, the receiving device can receive along a single beam direction using a single reception configuration (e.g., when receiving a data signal). The single reception configuration can be aligned on a beam direction determined based on listening according to different reception configuration directions (e.g., a beam direction with the highest signal strength, the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), or other acceptable signal quality determined based on listening according to multiple beam directions).

[0218] The wireless communication system 100 may be a packet-based network that operates according to a layered protocol stack. In the user plane, the communication at the bearer or packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer may be IP-based. The radio link control (RLC) layer may perform packet segmentation and reassembly to communicate on a logical channel. The MAC layer may perform priority processing and multiplexing of logical channels to transport channels. The MAC layer may also use error detection techniques, error correction techniques, or both to support retransmission at the MAC layer to improve link efficiency. In the control plane, the RRC protocol layer may provide the establishment, configuration, and maintenance of an RRC connection (which supports radio bearers for user plane data) between a UE 115 and a base station 105 or a core network 130. At the physical layer, transport channels may be mapped to physical channels.

[0219] UE 115 and base station 105 can support retransmission of data to increase the possibility of successfully receiving data. Hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) feedback is a technology that increases the possibility of correctly receiving data through communication link 125. HARQ can include a combination of error detection (e.g., using cyclic redundancy check (CRC)), forward error correction (FEC) and retransmission (e.g., automatic repeat request (ARQ)). HARQ can improve the throughput at the MAC layer under poor radio conditions (e.g., low signal-to-noise ratio conditions). In some examples, the device can support simultaneous slot HARQ feedback, where the device can provide HARQ feedback for data received in the previous symbol in the slot in a specific time slot. In other cases, the device can provide HARQ feedback in subsequent time slots or according to some other time interval.

[0220] One or more UEs 115 and one or more base stations 105 may communicate using beams in a beamforming wireless communication system. A UE 115 in a beamforming wireless communication system may perform BFD and beam monitoring. A UE 115 performing beamforming communication (including BFD and beam monitoring) may send a capability message to a base station 105. The capability message may indicate the ability of the UE 115 to monitor a defined number of link quality monitoring RS resources, a defined number of CSI measurement RS resources, a defined number of RS resources, a defined number of different active beams, or any combination thereof. Based on the capabilities of the UE 115, the base station 105 may send a monitoring configuration to the UE 115 indicating a set of resources (e.g., link quality monitoring resources, CSI measurement RS resources, RS resources) or an active beam set that the UE is to monitor and / or utilize in one or more CCs. The UE 115 may monitor the defined resources or communicate using the beams indicated in the monitoring configuration.

[0221] Figure 2 An example of a wireless communication system 200 that supports UE capability indication for BFD and beam management in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure is shown. In some examples, the wireless communication system 200 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. The UE 115-a can communicate with the base station 105-a within the coverage area 110-a using beamforming communication techniques. The UE 115-a can transmit to the base station 105-a using one or more uplink beams 210 (e.g., uplink beams 210-a, 210-b, and 210-c). The base station 105-a can communicate with the UE 115-a using one or more downlink beams 205 (e.g., downlink beams 205-a, 205-b, and 205-c).

[0222] UE 115-a may perform BFD during communication with base station 105-a using uplink beam 210 and downlink beam 205. UE 115-a and base station 105-a may communicate on multiple different CCs and frequency ranges (e.g., FR1 and FR2). Each CC or frequency range may have a configured number of resources for different communication types (such as CSI-RS, SSB, and other RS). The amount of resources used for each type of communication and measurement may also vary over time.

[0223] The UE 115-a may be configured by the network (e.g., via signaling from the base station 105-a) to monitor some or a combination of these resources to perform BFD. Monitoring of resources for BFD may be based on the maximum number of CSI-RS resources or SSBs for BFD that the UE 115-a is able to monitor across multiple CCs within a given duration (e.g., one or more symbol periods, time slots, subframes, frames, etc.). Thus, the monitoring configuration 220 indicated by the base station 105-a may be based on the UE's ability to monitor CSI-RS and SSB resources within a given duration. Although the base station 105-a may configure the monitoring configuration 220 for the UE 115-a, conventional systems do not take into account the frequency with which CSI-RS resources or SSB resources occur within a particular duration, and may result in the UE 115-a being required to monitor resources beyond its capabilities.

[0224] For example, the complexity of beam failure recovery can be based on the maximum number of CSI-RS resources across all CCs in the system that UE 115-a can use to monitor physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) quality. In another example, beam failure recovery can be based on the maximum number of different SSBs across all CCs that UE 115-a uses to monitor PDCCH quality. In another example, beam failure recovery can be based on different CSI-RS resources or SSB resources across all CCs for new beam identification. Beam failure recovery can be CSI-RS based BFD, where UE 115-a monitors the CSI-RS to determine whether a beam failure has occurred.

[0225] For example, for the first CC, the candidate values may be set from 1 to 16. For the second CC, the candidate values may be set from 1 to 16. For the third CC, the candidate values may be set from 1 to 128. In some cases, the UE 115-a may be forced to support at least 64 CC candidate values. In some cases, there may be mandatory capability signaling for FR2 and optional capability signaling FR1. In some cases, the UE 115-a may be forced to support at least 32 candidate values for FR2.

[0226] In order to improve the efficiency of beam failure recovery and ensure the flexibility and adaptability of beam failure recovery configuration, UE 115-a can signal that UE 115-a is able to monitor a defined number of resources across CC sets within a given duration (e.g., time slot), and the network (e.g., via signaling from base station 105-a) can configure UE 115-a to monitor a defined number of CSI-RS or SSB resources when UE 115-a performs BFD. The BFD complexity can be based on the maximum number of CSI-RS resources or SSB resources used for BFD or radio link monitoring (RLM) across CCs within a given time period. These resources can be used for BFD, RLM, or both. The CC list can include serving CCs in all frequency bands, CCs for a specific cell group, CCs for a specific frequency band, or an indicated CC list.

[0227] UE 115-a may additionally or alternatively perform beam management. A monitoring configuration 220 of resources and processes used by UE 115-a for beam management and measurement may be indicated to UE 115-a by base station 105-a via signaling on downlink beam 205. The beam management measurement complexity, which depends on the capabilities of UE 115-a, may be based on the maximum number of CSI-RS or SSB resources used for L1-RSRP across all CCs in a time slot. In some cases, as indicated by the monitoring configuration 220, the beam management measurement configuration may include only resources for measurement of L1-RSRP and may not include resources for measurement of L1-SINR. If UE 115-a uses L1-RSRP measurement instead of L1-SINR measurement, UE 115-a may not have an indication of potential interference on one or more beams, and UE 115-a may be restricted from reporting RSRP for beams that do not indicate interference. In addition, UE115-a can measure L1-RSRP on specific time slots for beam management, and in the case of mixed parameter sets across CCs, the time slots may not be specifically defined.

[0228] For example, the maximum number of SSB resources or CSI-RS resources across all CCs configured for measuring L1-RSRP in a time slot (e.g., for one transmission) may not exceed a specific configuration (e.g., MB_1). A specific configuration (e.g., MB_1) may be an example of capability signaling. For example, for the first CC 1, the candidate value set for MB_1 may be {0,8,16,32,64}. On frequency band FR2, UE 115-a may be forcefully signaled that MB_1≥8. On FR1, based on capability signaling sent by UE 115-a indicating that UE 115-a supports, UE 115-a may support MB_1≥8.

[0229] The available CSI-RS resources may be the sum of aperiodic, periodic, or semi-persistent resources, or a combination of one or more of these resources. In addition, the maximum number of CSI-RS resources across all CCs configured for measuring L1-RSRP (e.g., the sum of aperiodic, periodic, and semi-persistent resources) may not exceed MC_1. On CC 1a, the set of candidate values for MC_1 may be {0, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64}. In some examples, for FR1, UE 115-a may be forced to report at least 8 as its capability signaling.

[0230] In another example, the maximum number of CSI-RS resources (e.g., the sum of periodic, periodic, and semi-persistent resources) across all CCs used to measure L1-RRP in a time slot (e.g., two transmission resources) may not exceed MB_2. On this second CC, the candidate value set for MB_2 may be {0, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64}.

[0231] In some cases, there may be supported CSI-RS resource densities. The maximum number of non-periodic CSI-RS resources across all CCs configured for measuring L1-RSRP may not exceed MD_1. This candidate set may be a candidate value set of {"not supported", "only 1", "only 3", "both 1 and 3"}. On FR2, UE 115-a may be forced to signal "only 3" or "both 1 and 3". On FR1, "only 3" or "both 1 and 3" may be forced for UE capability signaling, but not both. For the fourth CC, the candidate value set of MD_2 may be {0,1,4,8,16,32,64}. For both FR1 and FR2, UE 115-a may be forced to report at least 4.

[0232] Thus, the UE 115-a may ensure both power and interference measurements by signaling a defined number of resources that the UE 115-a can monitor for L1-RSRP and L1-SINR across the CC set. The UE capabilities may be sent by the UE 115-a in a capabilities message 215. A monitoring configuration 220 may be sent by the base station 105-a in response to the capabilities message 215. The base station 105-a may configure the UE 115-a to monitor no more than a defined number of resources so that the UE 115-a performs beam management measurements.

[0233] In the case of a mixed parameter set, specific characteristics and boundaries of the time slot can be defined across CCs. In one option, the time slot can be defined for all CCs with the same parameter set. In a second option, the time slot can be based on a parameter set (e.g., the highest parameter set) across all available CCs. In another option, the time slot can be defined as any overlapping time set across CCs. In another option, the time slot can be defined independently of any parameter set, and the time slot can be defined with an absolute duration. Depending on the parameter set and the time slot definition, the specific characteristics of the resources that the UE 115-a can monitor can be indicated to the base station 105-a via a capability message. The capability message can indicate the number of resources that the UE 115-a can monitor with respect to the time slot definition.

[0234] The UE 115-a may also be capable of supporting a set number of unique active uplink beams 210 and a set number of unique downlink beams 205. The UE 115-a may indicate the ability to support the number of uplink beams 210 and downlink beams 205 in a capability message 215 sent to the base station 105-a. The base station 105-a may respond with a monitoring configuration 220 indicating to the UE 115-a which beams to monitor.

[0235] Figure 3 An example of a processing flow 300 for supporting UE capability indication for BFD and beam management in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure is shown. In some examples, the processing flow 300 can implement aspects of wireless communication systems 100 and 200. UE 115-b can communicate with base station 105-b in a beamforming communication system. UE 115-b can send an indication of UE capabilities to base station 105-b, and base station 105-b can send an indication of resources for UE 115-b to monitor based on the capabilities of UE 115-b. The techniques described herein can provide frequency limits on the occurrence of BFD link quality monitoring RS resources across CC sets within a TTI to avoid exceeding the ability of the UE to monitor those resources.

[0236] At 305, UE 115-b may send a capability message indicating the ability of UE 115-b to monitor a defined number (e.g., a maximum number) of link quality monitoring RS resources across CC sets within a TTI. In some examples, the capability message may indicate a defined number of RS resources (e.g., CSI-RS resources), SSB resources, or both. UE 115-b may send a capability message indicating the ability of UE 115-b to monitor a defined number of link quality monitoring RS resources, which are new beam ID resources. UE 115-b may send a capability message indicating the ability of UE 115-b to monitor a defined number of link quality monitoring RS resources across CC sets, which are serving CC sets in a band set.

[0237] In some examples, UE 115-b may send a capability message indicating the ability of UE 115-b to monitor a defined number of link quality monitoring RS resources across a CC set, which is a serving CC set in a cell group. UE 115-b may also send a capability message indicating the ability of UE 115-b to monitor a defined number of link quality monitoring RS resources across a CC set, which is a serving CC set in a single frequency band. UE 115-b may also send a capability message indicating the ability of UE 115-b to monitor a defined number of link quality monitoring RS resources across a CC set and a CC list identifying one or more CCs in the CC set.

[0238] In some examples, UE 115-b may send a capability message indicating the ability of UE 115-b to monitor a defined number of link quality monitoring RS resources across a set of CCs within a TTI, where the TTI is a time slot. The time slot may be defined according to a parameter set across CCs.

[0239] At 310, UE 115-b may receive a monitoring configuration based on the capability message indicating a set of link quality monitoring RS resources that UE 115-b is to monitor in one or more CCs within a TTI. The link quality monitoring RS resources may include one or more RLM RSs. The link quality monitoring RS resources may include one or more BFD RSs.

[0240] At 315, the base station 105-b may send the set of RSs in the link quality monitoring RS resource set indicated in the monitoring configuration. At 320, the UE 115-b may monitor the set of link quality monitoring RS resources indicated in the monitoring configuration within a TTI.

[0241] When UE 115-b detects a beam failure based on measurement of one or more link quality monitoring RS resources, at 325, UE 115-b may send a beam failure message corresponding to a first link quality monitoring RS resource in the set of link quality monitoring RS resources based on the monitoring. In some cases, after reporting beam failure on one or more beams, UE 115-b may receive a second monitoring configuration from base station 105-b indicating a second link quality monitoring RS resource different from the first link quality monitoring RS resource. UE 115-b may communicate using a new beam corresponding to the second link quality monitoring RS resource and may measure the second link quality monitoring RS resource to detect beam failure, if any, on the new beam.

[0242] Figure 4An example of a process flow 400 for supporting indication of UE capabilities for BFD and beam management in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure is shown. In some examples, the process flow 400 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. The UE 115-c can communicate with the base station 105-c in a beamforming communication system. The UE 115-c can send an indication of UE capabilities to the base station 105-c, and the base station 105-c can send an indication of resources to be monitored by the UE 115-c based on the capabilities of the UE 115-c.

[0243] At 405, the UE 115-c may send a capability message indicating the ability of the UE 115-c to monitor a defined number (e.g., a maximum number) of CSI measurement RS resources for RSRP measurement, SINR measurement, or both across CC sets within a TTI. In some cases, the UE 115-c may send a capability message indicating the ability of the UE 115-c to monitor a defined number of CSI measurement RS resources, which are RS resources, SSB resources, or both. The UE 115-c may also send a capability message indicating the ability of the UE 115-c to monitor a defined number of CSI measurement RS resources, which are non-periodic resources, periodic resources, semi-static resources, or a combination of these resources. The UE 115-c may also send a capability message indicating the ability of the UE 115-c to monitor a defined number of CSI measurement RS resources, which are RSRP resources (e.g., L1-RSRP resources), channel measurement reports, interference measurement reports, or a combination of these.

[0244] At 410 , the UE 115 - c may receive a monitoring configuration based on the capability message indicating a set of CSI measurement RS resources that the UE 115 - c is to monitor in one or more CCs within a TTI.

[0245] At 415 , the base station 105 - c may send a set of RSs in a CSI measurement RS resource set indicated in the monitoring configuration within a TTI.

[0246] At 420, the UE 115-c may monitor the CSI measurement RS resource set indicated in the monitoring configuration within the TTI. The RS resources may be used for L1-RSRP measurement, L1-SINR measurement for CSI-RS channel measurement resources (CMR), L1-SINR measurement for interference measurement resources (IMR), or a combination of these.

[0247] At 425, the UE 115-c may send a beam measurement report indicating at least one measurement, the at least one measurement being an L1-RSRP measurement, an L1-SINR measurement for CMR, an L1-SINR measurement for IMR, or a combination thereof. The base station 105-c may receive the report and may utilize to configure which beams to use for communications with the UE 115-c. In some cases, the base station 105-c may maintain one or more currently configured beams based on the report, or may change one or more configured beams.

[0248] Figure 5 An example of a processing flow 500 for supporting an indication of UE capabilities for BFD and beam management in accordance with various aspects of the present disclosure is shown. In some examples, the processing flow 500 can implement aspects of wireless communication systems 100 and 200. A UE 115-d can communicate with a base station 105-d in a beamforming communication system. The UE 115-d can send an indication of UE capabilities to the base station 105-d, and the base station 105-d can send an indication of resources for the UE 115-d to monitor based on the capabilities of the UE 115-d. In some cases, the UE 115-d can be configured to communicate with the base station 105-d via a set of CCs, and in some cases, the CCs may not all have the same set of parameters. The techniques described herein provide a definition of UE capabilities and a method for defining TTI durations corresponding to the UE capabilities.

[0249] At 505, UE 115-d may send a capability message indicating the UE 115-d's ability to monitor a defined number (e.g., a maximum number) of RS resources across a CC set within a TTI and indicating the duration of the TTI, wherein a first parameter set for a first CC in the CC set is different from a second parameter set for a second CC in the CC set.

[0250] In some examples, UE 115-d may send a capability message indicating a TTI duration based on a subset of a CC set with the same parameter set. UE 115-d may send a capability message indicating a duration of a TTI based on a parameter set of a CC set. A parameter set may be the highest parameter set of a CC set, or any other parameter set.

[0251] The UE 115-d may send a capability message based on indicating a TTI duration based on a set of TTIs that overlap in time across a set of CCs. The UE 115-d may send a capability message indicating a TTI duration based on a reference time duration (e.g., an absolute duration independent of any parameter set). The RS resource set may include an RS for link quality monitoring, one or more RLM RSs, one or more BFD RSs, an RS for CSI measurement, an RS for L1-RSRP measurement, L1-SINR measurement, or both, or a combination of these.

[0252] UE 115-d may support a specific density of these resources. For example, UE 115-d may support a maximum number of non-periodic CSI-RS resources across example time slots in CC525, and UE 115-d may be configured to measure L1-RSRP for a parameter set that does not exceed UE capabilities. UE 115-d may send UE capabilities in the form of candidate time slots numbered in a candidate set. The candidate time slot numbers may indicate the resources or parameter sets supported by UE 115-d. This candidate set may be, for example, a set of candidate values such as {"not supported", "only 1", "only 3", "both 1 and 3"}.

[0253] At 510, the base station 105-d may determine a definition of the TTI duration of the indicated UE capability. In some cases, the UE capability may be for a TTI with a duration defined for all CCs with the same parameter set. In a second option, the UE capability may be for a TTI with a duration defined on a parameter set (e.g., the highest parameter set) across all available CCs. In another option, a time slot may be defined independently of any parameter set, and the time slot may be defined with an absolute duration. In another option, a time slot may be defined as any overlapping time set across CCs. For example, CC0, CC1, and CC2 may overlap in time and may have TTIs of different durations. In the described example, the TTI of CC0 may have the longest duration, the TTI of CC1 may be half of the TTI duration of CC0, and the TTI of CC2 may be half of the TTI duration of CC1. For overlapping TTIs of different durations, the base station 105-d may configure the UE 115-d to be up to its reported RS resource monitoring capability. For example, 7 TTIs fall within the TTI duration of CC0. If UE 115-d reports the ability to monitor 7 or more RS resources, base station 105-d may configure UE 115-d to monitor RS resources in each of 7 overlapping TTIs across CC0, CC1, and CC2. If UE 115-d reports the ability to monitor 6 or fewer RS resources, base station 105-d may configure UE 115-d to monitor no more than the reported number of RS resources across 7 overlapping TTIs CC0, CC1, and CC2. For example, if UE 115-d reports the ability to monitor 3 RS resources, base station 105-d may configure UE 115-d to monitor 3 RS resources across 7 overlapping TTIs CC0, CC1, and CC2 (e.g., TTI7, TTI5, and TT2).

[0254] At 515, UE 115-d may receive a monitoring configuration based on the capability message indicating a set of RS resources that UE 115-d is to monitor in one or more CCs within a TTI. The monitoring configuration may be determined by base station 105-d based on information in the capability message. For example, for FR2 as described herein, and based on the capability message, UE 115-d may be configured by base station 105-d signaling a specific CC or candidate time slot value. For example, on FR2, UE 115-d may be configured to signal "only 3" or "both 1 and 3" depending on which time slot or TTI UE 115-d may measure based on a parameter set for CC 525. For FR1, UE 115-d may be configured to signal "only 3" or "both 1 and 3". For the fourth CC, the candidate value set for MC_2 may be {0, 1, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64}. For both FR1 and FR2, in this case of the fourth CC, UE 115-d may be forced to report at least 4 candidate time slots.

[0255] At 520, the base station 105-d may send a set of RS resources in a set of RS resources indicated in the monitoring configuration within a TTI (e.g., one or more of slots 1 through 7 in CC 525). At 525, the UE 115-d may monitor the set of RS resources indicated in the monitoring configuration within the TTI. In some cases, as described herein, the UE 115-d may generate measurements of RS resources for detecting whether a beam failure has occurred or for beam measurement reporting.

[0256] Figure 6An example of a process flow 600 for supporting an indication of UE capabilities for BFD and beam management according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. In some examples, the process flow 600 can implement aspects of the wireless communication systems 100 and 200. The UE 115-e can communicate with the base station 105-e in a beamforming communication system. The UE 115-e can send an indication of UE capabilities to the base station 105-e, and the base station 105-e can send an indication of resources to be monitored by the UE 115-e based on the capabilities of the UE 115-e. In some examples, the base station 105-e can send control signaling (e.g., RRC signaling) indicating a list of CCs. When the base station 105-e activates a TCI state ID set for a PDSCH via a MAC CE for at least a set of CCs or BWPs of the same frequency band, where the applicable list of CCs is indicated by RRC signaling, the same TCI state ID set is applied to all BWPs in the indicated CCs. The UE 115-e can report its ability to support a unique beam of a defined number (e.g., a maximum value) of a set of CCs or BWPs. The present technology may provide a UE 115-e with an indication of the maximum number of supported active beams that avoids ambiguity, and the following technology provides for defining the maximum number based on a unique TCI state ID, a spatial relationship information ID, or both.

[0257] At 605, the UE 115-e may send a capability message indicating the ability of the UE 115-e to monitor a defined number of different active beams across a CC set or a BWP set. In some cases, the UE 115-e may send a capability message indicating the ability of the UE 115-e to monitor a defined number of different active beams, which are one or more downlink beams (e.g., downlink beam 205), one or more uplink beams (e.g., uplink beam 210), or any combination of these.

[0258] The defined number of beams may be the maximum supported number of different active beams. In some cases, the maximum supported number of different active beams that are downlink beams may be defined based on the number of different active TCI state IDs. In some cases, the maximum supported number of different active beams that are downlink beams may be defined based on the number of different quasi-co-located (QCL) RS IDs for different activated TCI state ID sets. In some cases, the maximum supported number of different active beams that are downlink beams may be defined based on the number of different QCL RS IDs for different activated TCI state ID sets.

[0259] In some cases, the maximum number of different active beams that are uplink beams can be defined based on the number of different activated spatial relationship IDs corresponding to the active beam sets that are uplink beams. In some cases, the maximum supported number of different active beams that are uplink beams is defined based on the number of different spatial RS IDs of different activated spatial relationship ID sets.

[0260] At 610, the UE 115-e may receive a monitoring configuration indicating an active beam set to be monitored by the UE 115-e across one or more CCs or one or more BWPs based on the capability message. The UE 115-e may receive a monitoring configuration indicating different activated TCI state sets corresponding to active beam sets that are downlink beams. For example, the monitoring configuration may indicate one or more unique activated TCI state IDs to identify one or more unique active downlink (DL) beams (e.g., the unique active DL beams may be identified by unique activated TCI state IDs). In another example, the UE 115-e may also receive a monitoring configuration indicating different activated TCI state ID sets, wherein the active beam set is a downlink beam and corresponds to different QCL RS ID sets of the different activated TCI state ID sets. The different QCL RS ID sets may be QCL type D RS ID sets. For example, the monitoring configuration may indicate one or more activated TCI states, and the unique active downlink beam set corresponds to one or more unique QCL type D RS IDs in one or more activated TCI states.

[0261] In another example, the UE 115-e may receive a monitoring configuration indicating different activated TCI state ID sets, where the active beam sets may be downlink beams and may correspond to different QCL RS ID sets for the different activated TCI state ID sets. In some cases, the different root QCL RS ID sets may be different root QCL type-D RS ID sets in a QCL chain. For example, the monitoring configuration may indicate one or more activated states in a QCL chain, and the unique active downlink beam sets may correspond to one or more unique root QCL type-D RS IDs for the one or more activated TCI states in the QCL chain.
