Description

Technical Field

[0001] Aspects herein are directed to a support garment having features that facilitate hands-free breast milk expression. Background Art

[0002] Conventional support garments (e.g., bras) may include features that optimize the support garment for some uses or purposes (e.g., nursing a baby or for normal wear). However, these features may not be conducive to breast milk extraction, especially considering some common structures of breast pumps (e.g., hands-free breast pumps or wearable breast pumps). For example, a conventional nursing bra may not securely position a breast pump or hold the breast pump in place, and therefore, the breast pump may shift during use, which may adversely affect the pumping action of the breast pump. In addition, the breast pump is typically positioned by sliding the breast pump into the space between the wearer's breast and the inner surface of the support garment, and therefore, in addition to the displacement problem described above, the conventional support garment may not be able to expand to accommodate the breast pump, which may be uncomfortable for the wearer. In addition, conventional support garments that may also be worn when using a breast pump generally do not include features that facilitate physical activities (such as exercise, sports, and other fitness-related activities). While some aspects of the present disclosure describe subject matter related to breast pumps, aspects of the present disclosure further contemplate that these same factors may also raise issues regarding securely positioning and / or containing prostheses (e.g., such as breast prostheses) or other objects that may be held or maintained in place by support garments (e.g., pads, inserts, protective gear, etc.). [0014] The present disclosure relates to a support garment (e.g., a bra) that can help hold a breast pump, prosthesis, or other object in place (e.g., near a breast-covering portion of the support garment) and, in some instances, can facilitate wearing during physical activities (such as exercise, athletic activities, fitness activities, etc.). For example, the support garment can include a multi-layer structure that includes one or more interlayer compartments (e.g., compartments between layers) for accommodating objects. In addition, the support garment can include a material extension (e.g., a gusset or other sheet structure) secured near a central region of the support garment (e.g., a bridge or other portion near the midline and between the breast-covering portions) that can form a divider between the interlayer compartments. In some instances, the material extension can help hold the object in place and reduce the likelihood that the object may shift position when accommodated in the interlayer compartment.

[0015] In some cases, the support garment can include one or more different fabrics at different locations, the one or more different fabrics having different relative material properties (e.g., elasticity, breathability, permeability, warmth, etc.), which can contribute to enhanced support and comfort (e.g., for the wearer) while also providing a solid compartment for the object. Thus, the disclosed subject matter can provide, among other things, a support garment that facilitates holding an object (e.g., a breast pump, a prosthesis, etc.) in place while also providing a level of support, comfort, and other properties that facilitate physical activity and / or everyday wear.

[0016] In contrast to the subject matter of the present disclosure, conventional bras may include features that optimize the bra for some uses (e.g., nursing a baby or for normal wear), but these features may not be as advantageous or useful for breast milk pumping, especially in light of some common structures of hands-free "wearable" breast pumps (e.g., Elvie® breast pumps or Willow® breast pumps). For example, conventional nursing bras may not securely seat a breast pump, which allows the breast pump to shift during use, which may adversely affect the pumping action of the breast pump. In addition, these types of breast pumps are typically positioned by sliding the breast pump into the space between the wearer's breast and the inner surface of the bra. In addition to the shifting issues described above, conventional bras may not expand to accommodate the pump, which is uncomfortable for the wearer. While aspects discuss the disadvantages of conventional bras with respect to breast pumps, aspects of the present disclosure further contemplate that these same features may also cause problems with securely seating and / or accommodating prostheses (such as breast prostheses).

[0017] The subject matter of the present disclosure can include various aspects. For example, as described above, various aspects of the present disclosure are directed to a support garment, which can be in the form of a bra, that includes features that facilitate secure placement and accommodation of, for example, a breast pump (e.g., including a hands-free breast pump or a wearable breast pump) and / or other types of prostheses (e.g., including a breast prosthesis). In an example aspect, a front portion of the support garment includes a first layer (e.g., an outer layer or exterior layer) having a first breast-covering portion, a second breast-covering portion, and a first intermediate region positioned between the first breast-covering portion and the second breast-covering portion.

[0018] In an example, the first layer (e.g., outer layer or outer layer) may include features and characteristics that facilitate use with a breast pump (e.g., positioning, fixing, holding, etc.) and use without a breast pump (such as in daily use and / or sports or fitness-related). For example, the first layer may include a combination of different materials with different properties that work together to provide a set of properties, including compressibility, breathability, sense of fit, encapsulation, wicking, moisture blurring (e.g., related to breast milk, sweat, etc.), etc. Examples of materials that may be combined may include elastomeric fabrics (e.g., knitted elastic fibers), mesh fabrics, spacer meshes (e.g., spacer knitted fabrics), and other knitted fabrics, woven fabrics, non-woven fabrics, and films. In some examples, these fabrics may be layered, one on top of another. In some examples, these fabrics may include different pattern pieces sewn together to form the first layer.

[0019] In some examples, one or more portions of the first layer can include molded portions configured to help accommodate a breast pump. In addition, the molded portions can also be configured to help conform to or envelop the wearer's breasts. In addition, the molding can help accommodate changes in the wearer's breast size (e.g., before and after pumping; when milk production increases or decreases after childbirth; etc.). In at least some examples, the inner layer of the first layer can include molded portions (e.g., molded cups) and corresponding molded portions without further outer layers or outer layers, which can contribute to a neater aesthetic associated with the support garment and clothing worn over the support garment.

[0020] In some examples, the first layer (e.g., outer layer or outer layer) may include areas or zones made of different fabrics. For example, the first breast covering portion and the second breast covering portion may each include a corresponding central area formed by a relatively low-stretch material and a lower section formed by a relatively high-stretch material. The bottom edge of the lower section may be fixed to the bottom band, and in this configuration, the lower section formed by the relatively high-stretch material may act as an expandable gusset that may expand to accommodate a breast pump, a prosthesis, etc. The central area formed by the low-stretch material is positioned to cover the nipple area of the wearer or other central portions of the breast area of the wearer. For example, when a breast pump is attached to the wearer's nipple, the low-stretch central area helps fix or place the breast pump against the wearer's breast and minimizes displacement of the breast pump during use. In addition, when the breast pump is not held in the support garment (e.g., normal use), the lower-stretch central area and / or the higher-stretch lower section may (e.g., together) provide a support level that facilitates physical activity (e.g., by providing compressive support and encapsulation support).

[0021] The support garment may also include a second layer positioned inside the first layer. The second layer includes a third breast-covering portion, a fourth breast-covering portion, and a second intermediate region positioned between the third and fourth breast-covering portions. Each of the third and fourth breast-covering portions may include an opening sized to receive, for example, a flange of a breast pump. Alternatively, if the support garment is used for breastfeeding an infant, the opening is sized to accommodate the infant's mouth and a portion of the infant's face. The openings in the third and fourth breast-covering portions may be positioned inside a central region of the first and second breast-covering portions such that the central region covers the openings.

[0022] In an example, the second layer may be formed of an elastic resilient mesh material having a greater stretch characteristic than, for example, the stretch characteristic of the central area of the first and second breast-covering portions. The use of an elastic resilient mesh material for the second layer promotes permeability and breathability and allows the material to conform to the shape of the wearer's breasts, thereby improving the comfort of the wearer. In addition, the elastic resilient material surrounding the opening in the second layer may help secure, for example, the flange of a breast pump against the skin surface of the wearer.

[0023] In some examples, the edges of the opening can be reinforced with trim or other reinforcements, which can increase the structural integrity of the edges. Thus, the opening is less likely to become deformed or torn (e.g., due to repeated engagement with a breast pump) with the trim or reinforcement.

[0024] In an exemplary aspect, the support garment further comprises a material extension (e.g., a sheet, a webbing, etc.) connecting the first intermediate region of the first layer to the second intermediate region of the second layer, wherein the material extension extends from a position near the edge of the neck opening of the support garment to a position near the edge of the torso opening of the support garment (e.g., through a bottom strap). The material extension comprises a first edge secured to the first layer and a second edge secured to the second layer and a width extending between the first edge and the second edge. In an exemplary aspect, the width is from about 1 cm to about 4 cm. This construction effectively creates two separate "compartments," each of which can contain, for example, a breast pump or a prosthesis or another object (e.g., a pad, a liner, a protective article, etc.). The material extension helps position the breast pump or prosthesis so that they are not displaced beyond the midline when positioned in one of the compartments. Further, using a material extension having a width between the first edge and the second edge, rather than simply using stitching to secure the first intermediate region and the second intermediate region together, provides a compartment with a larger volume to better accommodate the volume of a breast pump or a prosthesis, thereby making the support garment more comfortable to wear.

[0025] In an example aspect, the first shoulder strap extends from an upper edge of the third breast-covering portion, and the second shoulder strap extends from an upper edge of the fourth breast-covering portion. In an example aspect, the upper edge of the first breast-covering portion can be releasably secured to the first shoulder strap, and the upper edge of the second breast-covering portion can be releasably secured to the second shoulder strap. When the wearer wishes to position a breast pump or prosthesis, the wearer can release the upper edge of one or more of the first breast-covering portion and the second breast-covering portion, lower the first layer to expose the opening in the second layer and position the article. This can be contrasted with a more traditional brassiere, in which the wearer may need to pull the edge of the bra down to position the pump, which may cause wear and tear on the brassiere.

[0026] As used herein, the term "support garment" refers to an upper body garment that is primarily configured to provide support to the wearer's breasts. Thus, the support garment may be in the form of a bra (including a nursing bra and / or a sports bra), a tank top, a sports top, a swimsuit top, etc. When the garment is in the form of a support garment or a bra, the term "breast covering portion" means the portion of the support garment that is configured to cover the wearer's breasts. In example aspects and with respect to the first breast covering portion and the second breast covering portion of the first layer, the breast covering portion may cover almost all of the wearer's breasts (e.g., up to about 90% of the surface area of the wearer's breasts). Thus, the breast covering portion generally extends from a top portion of each of the wearer's breasts (e.g., near the wearer's clavicle) to a lower portion (e.g., the wearer's inframammary fold), and from an inner edge of each of the wearer's breasts (e.g., near the wearer's sternum) to an outer edge (e.g., near the wearer's armpit). In other example aspects and with respect to the third breast covering portion and the fourth breast covering portion, the breast covering portion may cover portions of the wearer's breasts. For example, the breast covering portion may cover an area around the nipple region of the wearer, but the nipple region may not be covered by the breast covering portion (i.e., the nipple region may be positioned within an opening in the second layer). When used in connection with, for example, a support garment or a brassiere, the term "underband" refers to a portion of a brassiere that forms a lower boundary of at least a front portion of the brassiere. The underband is configured to encircle the torso region of the wearer and may comprise a separate piece or may comprise an integral extension of the front portion of the support garment.

[0027] Positional terms (such as top, bottom, lower, middle, inside, vertically, etc.) used when describing a support garment are relative to the support garment as intended to be worn with the wearer standing upright. For example, the term "inner" or "interior" means a layer or structure that is positioned closer to the surface of the wearer's body than other layers or structures of the support garment. The term "outer" means a layer or structure that is positioned outside the other layers or structures of the support garment. In example aspects, the inner layer may be the innermost layer of the support garment, and the outer layer may be the outermost layer of the support garment. Relative to the portion of the support garment described as lower or bottom being closer to the wearer's feet, the portion of the support garment described as upper is closer to the wearer's head. The term "vertical" means a direction along an axis extending from the wearer's head to the wearer's feet.

[0028] When describing the stretch properties of two different materials or layers, terms such as "stretch characteristics" as used herein refer to relative terms. Thus, a material or layer having a greater stretch characteristic than another material or layer will stretch or elongate further in response to an equal load. The term "elastic rebound" means that a material stretches or elongates in response to a load and generally returns to its resting length when the load is removed. Elastic rebound materials can include elastic yarns (such as spandex) that have the ability to stretch to 100% or more of their resting length and return to their resting length when the tension is removed.

[0029] As used herein, material properties for burst strength, elastic modulus, and relative softness (eg, based on flex or stiffness properties) can be determined using test methods known to those of ordinary skill in the fabric arts related to wearable garments and apparel.

[0030] As used herein, the term "about" means within ±10% of the indicated value. When referring to an angle, then "about" means ±10 degrees.

[0031] Now refer to Figure 1 , depicting an example support garment 110. The support garment 110 includes a front portion 112 and a rear portion 114, as well as a first shoulder strap 116, a second shoulder strap 118, and a bottom strap 119. In an example, the first shoulder strap 116 and the second shoulder strap 118 can support the support garment 110 on the shoulders of the wearer, and the bottom strap 119 can at least partially surround the torso of the wearer. In addition, the support garment 110 includes a neck opening 120 and a torso opening 122. The neck opening 120 is at least partially defined, formed, and / or surrounded by the upper edges or boundaries (e.g., neck opening edge 124) of the first shoulder strap 116 and the second shoulder strap 118 and the front portion 112 and the rear portion 114. The torso opening 122 is at least partially defined by a torso opening edge 126, which can be the lower edge of the bottom strap 119 and / or the lower edges of the front portion 112 and the rear portion 114. Figure 1 A bra is depicted, and in other examples, support garment 110 may include various other types of support garments that include the same or similar elements.

[0032] In examples of the present disclosure, at least a portion of the support garment 110 (e.g., the front portion 112) can include a multi-layer structure. For example, the front portion 112 includes a first layer 128 (e.g., a first breast covering layer) and a second layer 130 (e.g., a second breast covering layer). The first layer 128 can also be described as an outer layer or external layer, and the second layer 130 can be described as an inner layer or internal layer (e.g., relative to the first layer 128). For example, when the support garment 110 is worn, at least a portion of the second layer 130 can be positioned closer to the wearer than the first layer 128 and / or can be positioned between the first layer 128 and the wearer.

[0033] In an example, the multi-layer structure can facilitate various operations and features of the support garment 110. For example, in at least some cases, objects such as breast pumps, breast prostheses, pads, protective articles, etc. can be retained between the first layer 128 and the second layer 130. In this sense, one or more compartments (e.g., interlayer compartments) can be disposed between the first layer 128 and the second layer 130. In addition, the multi-layer structure can provide the ability to incorporate different materials with different properties into the support garment 110. For example, the first layer 128 and the second layer 130 can be composed of different materials, and the combination of different materials can provide different properties of the support garment 110 (e.g., breathability, permeability, support, comfort, softness, fit, moisture blurring, etc.). Examples of materials can include, but are not limited to, knitted fabrics, woven fabrics, non-woven fabrics, meshes, spacer meshes, foam sheets / pads, etc.

[0034] In addition, the first layer 128 can include a first breast-covering portion 132, a second breast-covering portion 134, and a first intermediate region 136 located between the first breast-covering portion 132 and the second breast-covering portion 134. In an example, the first breast-covering portion 132 can be releasably coupled to the first shoulder strap 116, and the second breast-covering portion 134 can be releasably coupled to the second shoulder strap 118. For example, an upper edge 138 (e.g., an edge, apex, or extension) of the first breast-covering portion 132 can be releasably attached to the first shoulder strap 116, and similarly, an upper edge 140 (e.g., an edge, apex, or extension) of the second breast-covering portion 134 can be releasably attached to the second shoulder strap 118. Various releasable couplings such as snaps, clips, buckles, hooks, posts, etc. can be used to attach the breast-covering portions to the shoulder straps. Furthermore, the releasable attachment of the first breast-covering portion 132 and the second breast-covering portion 134 may allow for easier access to the space or compartment between the first layer 128 and the second layer 130 .

[0035] Figure 1Depicted are first and second breast covering portions 132, 134 coupled to respective shoulder straps 116, 118. Figure 2 , the first breast covering portion 132 and the second breast covering portion 134 are separated from the corresponding shoulder straps 116 and 118 and folded down to reveal other features of the present disclosure. In at least some examples, the second layer 130 can include a third breast covering portion 142, a fourth breast covering portion 144, and a second intermediate region 146 between the third breast covering portion 142 and the fourth breast covering portion 144. In addition, the third breast covering portion 142 can include a first opening 148 defined or formed by the first peripheral edge 150, and the fourth breast covering portion 144 can include a second opening 152 defined or formed by the second peripheral edge 154.

[0036] The first opening 148 and the first peripheral edge 150 may include various elements, and although the second opening 152 may not be explicitly described, it is understood that in some examples, the second opening 152 and the second peripheral edge 154 may include similar elements. In an example, the first peripheral edge 150 may include an opening profile that defines the shape and size of the first opening 148, and in some cases, the opening profile may correspond to an object to be retained in the compartment between the first breast-covering portion 132 and the third breast-covering portion 142. For example, the opening profile defined by the first peripheral edge 150 may include any combination of one or more of spherical elements, elliptical elements, oval elements, horseshoe elements, and / or pear-shaped / conical elements. In some examples, the opening profile may be egg-shaped or pear-shaped or circular. In some examples, the opening profile may correspond to a shape associated with a breast pump (e.g., a hands-free breast pump), such as a shape corresponding to at least a portion of a flange or shield of a breast pump. For example, at least a portion of the flange can be inserted through the first opening 148 and positioned between the inner surface of the third breast-covering portion 142 and the wearer's skin surface. In addition, if the support garment 110 is used to feed an infant, the opening contour is configured to accommodate the infant's mouth and a portion of the infant's face.

[0037] In at least some examples, at least some portions of the second layer 130, including the third breast-covering portion 142 and the fourth breast-covering portion 144, can be formed of an elastic resilient mesh material. The use of an elastic resilient mesh material for the second layer can promote permeability and breathability, and allow the material to conform to the shape of the wearer's breasts, thereby improving the comfort of the wearer. In addition, the elastic resilient material surrounding the openings 148 and 152 in the second layer 130 can help secure, for example, the flange of a breast pump against the surface of the wearer's skin. In some examples, the second layer can include a single layer of mesh fabric. In some cases, the second layer 130 can include two or more layers of mesh material. In some examples, as an alternative to or in addition to a mesh, the second layer can include various other types of materials, such as other knitted fabrics, woven fabrics, non-woven fabrics, spacer fabrics, foam sheets / pads, films, etc.

[0038] In addition, at least a portion of the first peripheral edge 150 can be reinforced with a trim or other edge reinforcement 156, which can increase the structural integrity of the edge and / or reduce the likelihood that the first peripheral edge 150 may cause discomfort to the wearer (e.g., due to friction or washing). In some examples, the reinforcement 156 can include flocking or some other treatment that enhances softness or other material properties. In some cases, the reinforcement 156 can include a trim and / or a seam or stitching (e.g., an overlock). In an example, based at least in part on the edge reinforcement 156, the first peripheral edge 150 is less likely to become deformed or torn (e.g., due to repeated engagement with a breast pump).

[0039] Now refer to Figure 3 , depicts a support garment 110 that includes a first object 158 (e.g., a first hands-free breast pump) and a second object 160 (e.g., a second hands-free breast pump) retained between a first layer 128 and a second layer 130. The first object 158 and the second object 160 are depicted by dashed lines, which indicate that they are at least partially obscured from view by the first layer 128. In at least some examples, the first object 158 can be retained in a first mezzanine compartment between the first breast-covering portion 132 and the third breast-covering portion 142, and the second object 160 can be retained in a second mezzanine compartment between the second breast-covering portion 134 and the third breast-covering portion 142. For example, the first breast-covering portion 132 and / or the second breast-covering portion 134 can be detached from the corresponding straps to provide less obstructed access to the openings 148 and 152 to secure a breast pump for breast milk extraction. Once the breast pump is in place, the first breast-covering portion 132 and / or the second breast-covering portion 134 can be reattached to the corresponding straps. In some examples, portions 132 and 134 may be detached from the respective straps.

[0040] In some examples (not explicitly depicted), the first breast-covering portion 132 and / or the second breast-covering portion 134 may be more permanently attached to the second layer 130, such as by stitching, adhesives, heat bonding, integral knitting, etc. In such a configuration, the first object 158 and / or the second object 160 (e.g., a hands-free breast pump) may be inserted between the free edge of the first layer 128 and the free edge of the second layer 130 and manipulated into place. Furthermore, based on various features of the support garment 110, such as various gussets and combinations of different materials, the multi-layer construction may still effectively hold the objects in place.

[0041] In some examples, the first layer 128 may include a central region (e.g., Figure 3 , including a first central region 162a and a second central region 162b) and a lower section 164 positioned between the central regions 162a and 162b and the bottom band 119. The central region may include a continuous region spanning between the first breast-covering portion 132 and the second breast-covering portion 134. For example, the central region 162a may extend in a substantially uninterrupted manner with the central region 162b (e.g., the central regions 162a and 162b are a continuous piece or are directly coupled to each other at a seam). However, in some cases, the first breast-covering portion 132 and the second breast-covering portion 134 may include corresponding central regions (e.g., the central regions 162a and 162b are separated by some additional piece of the first layer 128 that forms a bridge between the two central regions 162a and 162b). The central regions 162a and 162b may have various sizes, and in some examples, the sizes of the central regions 162a and 162b are configured to cover at least a portion of the first opening 148 and the second opening 152 (eg, all of the first opening 148 and the second opening 152 ).

[0042] The central regions 162a and 162b and the lower section 164 may be constructed of a variety of materials. For example, the central regions 162a and 162b may include a relatively low stretch material, and the lower section 164 may be formed of a relatively high stretch material (e.g., an elastic resilient mesh). In addition, the relatively low stretch material of the central regions 162a and 162b may have a stretch characteristic that is lower than the stretch characteristics of, for example, the third breast covering portion 142 and the fourth breast covering portion 144 (e.g., lower than the portions surrounding the openings 148 and 152). In some examples, the central regions 162a and 162b may include one or more of a knitted fabric, a woven fabric, a non-woven fabric, a spacer mesh, a foam layer. For example, the central regions 162a and 162b may include a combination of a mesh, a spacer mesh, and a foam (e.g., an open-cell foam), which may be combined to provide a relatively low stretch material that is also comfortable, breathable, and permeable.

[0043] In some examples, the bottom edge of the lower section 164 can be directly secured to the bottom band 119. Thus, the lower section 164 formed of a relatively high stretch material can act as an expandable gusset that can expand to accommodate the first object 158 and / or the second object 160 (e.g., a breast pump, a prosthesis, etc.). In addition, the central regions 162a and 162b formed of a lower stretch material can be positioned to cover the nipple area of the wearer or other central portions of the wearer's breast area. For example, when a breast pump is attached to the wearer's nipple, the low-stretch central region 162 helps to secure or position the breast pump against the wearer's breast and minimize displacement of the breast pump during use. For example, referring to cross-section 3A-3A, the breast pump 158 (e.g., a hands-free breast pump) is positioned so that the flange 159 has been inserted through the opening 148 and is retained inside the inner surface of the third breast covering portion 142. Additionally, lower section 164 has expanded in the direction of arrow 165 to help accommodate breast pump 158, while lower stretch central region 162a can help reduce displacement. Additionally, when a breast pump is not retained within support garment 110 (e.g., normal use), lower stretch central regions 162a and 162b and / or higher stretch lower section 164 can (e.g., together) provide a level of support that facilitates physical activity.

[0044] Although object 158 is described as a breast pump, in other aspects, object 158 may be a prosthesis. For example, the prosthesis may include a flange or other extension that is inserted through opening 158 and held against the surface of the wearer's skin. Thus, third breast-covering portion 142, which may include a higher stretch material, and central portion 162a, which may include a lower stretch material, may help hold the prosthesis in place, while lower section 164 may expand to help accommodate the increased volume. In some cases, the prosthesis may not include a flange, and therefore, in at least some instances, opening 148 may be omitted from third breast-covering portion 142.

[0045] In another example, the present disclosure may include material extensions 166 (e.g., gussets or other panel structures) secured about a central region of the support garment (e.g., a bridge or other portion between breast covering portions). Figure 4 The material extension 166 can be seen in Figure 3 Direct viewing is obscured but indicated by dashed lines), Figure 4 Support garment 110 is depicted with at least a portion of first layer 128 omitted to show material extension 166. In some examples, material extension 166 can form a divider between the mezzanine compartments, and material extension 166 can help hold objects 158 and 160 in place and reduce the likelihood that one or more of objects 158 or 160 may shift position while contained in the mezzanine compartments.

[0046] The material extension 166 may include a piece of material (e.g., an elastic resilient mesh) that connects the first intermediate region 136 of the first layer 128 to the second intermediate region 146 of the second layer 130. In addition, the material extension 166 may extend from a first end 168 (e.g., an upper end or other upper edge) oriented toward the neck opening edge 124 to a second end 170 (e.g., a lower end or other lower edge) oriented toward the torso opening edge 126. In addition, the material extension 166 may include a first edge 172 secured to the first layer 128 (e.g., secured to an inner surface of the first intermediate region 136) and a second edge 174 secured to the second layer 130 (e.g., secured to an outer surface 147 of the second intermediate region 146).

[0047] In addition, material extension 166 can include a width 176 extending between first edge 172 and second edge 174, and a length 178 extending between first end 168 and second end 170. In exemplary aspects, width 176 is from about 1 cm to about 4 cm. In addition, length 178 can be configured to extend from a top edge of first layer 128 to an interface between a central region (e.g., 162a and / or 162b) of the first layer and lower section 164. In some examples, the top edge of first layer 128 can extend higher than first end 168.

[0048] In examples of the present disclosure, material extensions 166 and related configurations can help form two separate compartments, where each compartment can accommodate, for example, a breast pump or a prosthesis. In examples, material extensions 166 help position the breast pump or prosthesis so that they are not displaced beyond the midline of support garment 110 when positioned within one of the compartments. Further, using a material extension having a width 176 between first edge 172 and second edge 174 (rather than simply using stitching to secure the first and second intermediate regions together) can provide a compartment with a larger volume to better accommodate the volume of a breast pump or prosthesis, thereby making the support garment more comfortable to wear.

[0049] In at least one example, the first intermediate region 136 and the second intermediate region 146 can be directly coupled together along a seam. For example, the material extension 166 can be omitted, and the first intermediate region 136 and the second intermediate region 146 can be connected by sewing, bonding, integral knitting, etc. The first intermediate region 136 can include a higher stretch material, while the breast-covering portions 134 and 134 can still include a lower stretch material, so that the higher stretch material in the intermediate region 136 can expand away from the seam to accommodate a breast pump or other object. In some examples where the first intermediate region 136 is directly coupled to the second intermediate region 146, the first intermediate region 136 can include a lower stretch material (e.g., relative to the lower section 164) so that the lower section 164 provides an expansion function to accommodate the increased volume.

[0050] Now refer to Figure 5 , Figure 6 , Figure 7 , Fig. 8A and Figure 8B as well as Fig. 9 , an example support garment 210 is depicted, and the support garment 210 includes various features that provide functionality to hold a wearable or hands-free breast pump (or other device). In addition, the support garment 210 may also include other features, such as compressive and / or encapsulating support, breathability, moisture wicking, moisture blurring, etc.

[0051] Support garment 210 may include many of the same or comparable features as support garment 110 and, for the sake of brevity, may not be discussed further. Figures 5 to 9 At least some of these features are not explicitly described, but will be understood by a person of ordinary skill. Examples of similar or identical components may include: a front portion 212; a back portion 214; a first shoulder strap 216; a second shoulder strap 218; and a bottom strap 219; a neck opening 220; a neck opening edge 224; and a torso opening 222. In addition, the front portion 212 may include a first layer 228 (e.g., a first breast covering layer or first sheet) and a second layer 230 (e.g., a second breast covering layer or second sheet), which may be described as an outer layer / sheet or outer layer / sheet and an inner layer / sheet or inner layer / sheet, respectively.

[0052] Similar to the support garment 110, in at least some cases, objects such as breast pumps, breast prostheses, pads, protective articles, etc. can be retained between the first layer 228 and the second layer 230. In this sense, one or more compartments (e.g., sandwich compartments) can be disposed between the first layer 228 and the second layer 230. In addition, the multi-layer structure can provide the ability to incorporate different materials with different properties into the support garment 210. For example, the first layer 228 and the second layer 230 can be composed of different materials, and the combination of different materials can provide different properties of the support garment 210 (e.g., breathability, permeability, support, comfort, softness, fit, moisture blurring, etc.). Examples of materials can include, but are not limited to, knitted fabrics, woven fabrics, non-woven fabrics, meshes, spacer meshes, foam sheets / pads, etc.

[0053] In addition, the first layer 228 can include a first breast-covering portion 232, a second breast-covering portion 234, and a first intermediate region 236 located between the first breast-covering portion 232 and the second breast-covering portion 234. In an example, the first breast-covering portion 232 can be releasably coupled to the first shoulder strap 216, and the second breast-covering portion 234 can be releasably coupled to the second shoulder strap 218. Various releasable couplings such as snaps, clips, buckles, hooks, posts, etc. can be used to attach the breast-covering portions to the shoulder straps. In addition, the releasable attachment of the first breast-covering portion 232 and the second breast-covering portion 234 can make it easier to access the space or compartment between the first layer 228 and the second layer 230.

[0054] Figure 5 Depicted are a first breast covering portion 232 and a second breast covering portion 234 coupled to respective shoulder straps 216 and 218. Figure 6, the first breast covering portion 232 and the second breast covering portion 234 are separated from the corresponding shoulder straps 216 and 218 and folded down to reveal other features of the present disclosure. In at least some examples, the second layer 230 can include a third breast covering portion 242, a fourth breast covering portion 244, and a second intermediate region 246 between the third breast covering portion 242 and the fourth breast covering portion 244. In addition, the third breast covering portion 242 can include a first opening 248 defined or formed by the first peripheral edge 250, and the fourth breast covering portion 244 can include a second opening 252 defined or formed by the second peripheral edge 254.

[0055] The garment 210 may be similar to the garment 110 (e.g., such as Figure 3 228 and 230) to hold an object (e.g., a wearable breast pump) in the space or compartment between layer 228 and layer 230.

[0056] In an example, the first peripheral edge 250 may include an opening profile that defines the shape and size of the first opening 248. Figure 6 and Figure 7 , the opening profile may include an inverted horseshoe or other shape with a curved top edge (e.g., a semicircular or semi-elliptical shape). In some instances, the bottom edge of the opening includes the top edge 217a of the bottom band 219, which may be relatively straight. In some instances, such a larger opening profile with a bottom edge positioned lower on the garment (e.g., compared to an opening that terminates above the bottom band) may be more comfortable for some wearers based on a rounded top edge that conforms to the upper portion of the wearer's chest or breasts, while the absence of a lower edge may reduce friction or discomfort. In addition, by omitting the band of the inner layer 230 (which would otherwise form the lower edge of the opening), the construction may avoid the possibility of material wear over time, which may cause the inner layer 230 to be less effective or functional (e.g., due to overstretching or other wear-related conditions).

[0057] The first peripheral edge 250 may also include other features associated with the shape or profile. For example, the profile or shape of the first peripheral edge 250 may include a relatively straight inner edge 217b, a relatively straight outer edge 217c, or a combination thereof. In some examples, the orientation of the inner edge 217b and / or the outer edge 217c may be based on the edge 217a. For example, the inner edge 217b and / or the outer edge 217c may include an angle in the range of about 75 degrees to about 105 degrees relative to the edge 217a. In some examples, the angle may be about 90 degrees or substantially perpendicular. In some examples, the inner edge 217b associated with the opening 250 may be substantially parallel to (e.g., within 15 degrees of parallel) the inner edge associated with the opening 252. In at least some examples, the profile associated with the openings 250 and 252 omits material in the lower inner and outer quarters that otherwise may cause discomfort around the breast tissue (e.g., due to chafing or hot spots). In at least some examples, when evaluating the characteristics of an opening or a profile of an opening (eg, a profile shape or relationship of edges), when the inner layer 230 is flat (eg, as Figure 7 ) to evaluate these characteristics.

[0058] Reference Figure 7 In some examples, the inner layer 230 includes a central bridge 247 between the respective inner edges of the openings 250 and 252. In at least some examples, the width 249 of the central bridge 247 is configured to reduce the likelihood of discomfort along the inner portion of the breast. For example, the central bridge 247 can include a width 249 that is large enough to maintain the structural integrity of the inner layer 230 and small enough to reduce the likelihood of skin irritation along the inner portion of the breast. In some examples, the width 249 may be graded differently compared to other portions of the garment 210 for the purpose of maintaining a thinner band associated with the central bridge 247. In some examples, the width 249 may not change between garments 210 of various sizes because the minimum width for structural integrity of the smaller size may provide sufficient structural integrity for the larger size. For example, a garment 210 sized to be relatively small may have the same width 249 as a garment 210 sized to be relatively large, even though other portions of the corresponding garments may be graded differently (e.g., the circumference of the bottom band is different). Thus, in a large number of garments having a width 249 such as that of the garment 210, the width 249 may not change between the garments 210 of various sizes. Figures 5 to 9 The width 249 may be the same for associated garments of the same characteristics.

[0059] Figure 6 and Figure 7The opening profile in is an example. In other examples, the opening profile may correspond to an object to be held in the compartment between the first breast-covering portion 232 and the third breast-covering portion 242. For example, the opening profile defined by the first peripheral edge 250 may include any combination of one or more of a spherical element, an elliptical element, an oval element, a horseshoe element, and / or a pear-shaped / conical element. In some examples, the opening profile may be egg-shaped or pear-shaped or circular. In some examples, the opening profile may correspond to a shape associated with a breast pump (e.g., a hands-free breast pump), such as a shape corresponding to at least a portion of a flange or shield of a breast pump.

[0060] In at least some examples, at least some portions of the second layer 230, including the third breast-covering portion 242 and the fourth breast-covering portion 144, can be formed of an elastic resilient mesh material. The use of an elastic resilient mesh material for the second layer can promote permeability and breathability, and allow the material to conform to the shape of the wearer's breasts, thereby improving the comfort of the wearer. In addition, the elastic resilient material surrounding the openings 248 and 252 in the second layer 230 can help secure, for example, the flange of a breast pump against the skin surface of the wearer.

[0061] In some examples, the second layer may include a single layer of mesh fabric.

[0062] In some cases, the second layer 230 may include two or more layers of mesh fabric, which may be attached to each other as a sheet having multiple or more fabric layers (e.g., by seams along an edge or perimeter). For example, the second layer may include a first layer 230a (e.g., an inner layer) of mesh fabric and a second layer 230b (e.g., an outer layer) of mesh fabric. In some examples, the first layer 230a and the second layer 230b may include one or more different fabric properties that contribute to the overall function of the second layer 230. Examples of fabric properties that may differ between the first layer 230a and the second layer 230b may include the size of the openings in the mesh, the constituent materials of the yarn, the yarn diameter, the yarn denier, the knitting stitch structure, the post-processing reinforcement, the stitch tension, etc. In some examples, the first layer 230a and the second layer 230b may have different elongation properties, such that one of the layers includes a higher amount of elongation when subjected to a given load. In some examples, the first layer 230a and the second layer 230b include different amounts of elastic fibers.

[0063] In at least some cases, a double-layer mesh sheet can include various advantages. For example, a mesh fabric can provide fabric breathability, but in some cases, it may be challenging for a single-layer mesh fabric to include a combination of comfort (e.g., softness) and strength. By including mesh fabrics with different properties, a double-layer mesh first layer 230b can include breathability, comfort, and strength.

[0064] In at least some examples, the first layer 230a is a mesh fabric (e.g., a mesh knit fabric) that is softer (e.g., better feel, better drape, etc.) than a different mesh fabric of the second layer 230b, and the first layer 230a may include an innermost skin-facing surface (e.g., positioned to contact the wearer's skin). In some cases, the softer first layer 230a of the mesh may include yarns having a smaller diameter or denier (e.g., compared to the yarns comprising the second mesh layer 230b). In some cases, the softer first layer 230a of the mesh may include a finer mesh with smaller mesh openings (e.g., compared to the yarns comprising the second mesh layer 230b). In some examples, the softer first layer 230a may have a different elastic modulus than the second layer 230b. For example, the first layer 230a may have a lower elastic modulus. In some cases, the mesh fabric of the first layer 230a may include a higher amount of elastic yarn (e.g., spandex) as compared to the mesh fabric of the second layer 230b.

[0065] In at least some examples, the second layer 230b is a mesh fabric (e.g., a mesh knit fabric) that is stronger (e.g., better burst strength, higher elastic modulus, etc.) than the different mesh fabric of the first layer 230a. In some cases, the stronger second layer 230b of the mesh may include yarns having a larger diameter or denier (e.g., compared to the yarns comprising the second mesh layer 230b). In some cases, the stronger second layer 230b of the mesh may include a coarser mesh with larger mesh openings (e.g., compared to the yarns comprising the first mesh layer 230a). In some examples, the stronger second layer 230b may have a different elastic modulus than the softer first layer 230a. For example, the second layer 230b may have a higher elastic modulus. In some cases, the mesh fabric of the second layer 230b may include a lower amount of elastic yarn (e.g., spandex) as compared to the mesh fabric of the first layer 230a.

[0066] In some examples, the second layer may include various other types of materials, such as other knitted fabrics, woven fabrics, non-woven fabrics, spacer fabrics, foam sheets / pads, films, etc., instead of or in addition to the mesh.

[0067] In an example, at least a portion of the first peripheral edge 250 can be reinforced with a trim or other edge reinforcement, which can increase the structural integrity of the edge and / or reduce the likelihood that the first peripheral edge 250 may cause discomfort to the wearer (e.g., due to friction or washing). In some examples, the edge finishing can include flocking or some other treatment that enhances softness or other material properties. In some cases, the reinforcement can include a trim and / or a seam or stitching (e.g., an overlock). In an example, based at least in part on the edge reinforcement, the first peripheral edge 250 is less likely to become misaligned or torn (e.g., due to repeated engagement with a breast pump).

[0068] Now refer to Fig. 8A and Figure 8B , the outer layer 228 can include various properties. In at least one example, the outer layer 228 can include two or more fabrics that are coupled to form the outer layer 228. The two or more fabrics or layers can be attached to each other (e.g., by seams along edges or perimeters and / or by lamination) as a sheet having multiple layers or multiple fabric layers. For example, the two or more fabrics can include different sets of material properties that, when combined into the outer layer 228, impart or bring about a set of desired overall properties.

[0069] In some examples, the outer layer / sheet 228 may include an outermost layer 228a, an inner layer 228b, and an intermediate layer 228c disposed between the outermost layer 228a and the inner layer 228b.

[0070] In at least some examples, outermost layer 228a can include a high support fabric that can be more compressible than fabrics associated with layers 228b and 228c. For example, outer layer 228a can include an elastomeric fabric (eg, a knitted fabric including elastic fibers).

[0071] In at least some examples, the inner layer 228b can include a fabric configured to blur moisture (e.g., breast milk, sweat, etc.). For example, the inner layer 228b can include a spacer knit fabric having a more hydrophilic inner knit layer, a more hydrophobic outer knit layer, and a tie yarn (e.g., exposed elastic yarn) connecting the inner and outer knit layers. In some examples, the inner layer 228b can be combined with (e.g., laminated with) a breathable waterproof membrane.

[0072] In at least some examples, the middle layer 228c can include a mesh fabric configured to impart breathability and strength to the outer layer 228. For example, the middle layer 228c can include the same mesh fabric as the mesh fabric in the layer 230b of the inner layer 230.

[0073] In at least some examples, the inner layer 228b and the intermediate layer 228c can be molded to include a concave inner surface oriented toward the wearer. Figure 8B As depicted in FIG. 2 , the inner layer 228b and the intermediate layer 228c include a concave recess 229a including a shoulder 229b transitioning between the unmolded portion and the molded portion. In at least some cases, the shoulder 229b forms a perimeter around at least a portion of the molded portion and can facilitate enveloping support (e.g., for the breast area) when the outer sheet 228 is secured to the shoulder straps. In addition, when the breast pump is secured between the outer layer 228 and the wearer, the shoulder 229b can help prevent the breast pump from shifting or sliding out of position.

[0074] In at least some examples, while the inner layer 228b and the middle layer 228c can be molded, the outermost layer 228a may not be molded. Therefore, the outermost layer 228a can retain elastic properties that can otherwise be changed by applying heat and / or pressure during the molding process.

[0075] In another example, and similarly to Figures 1 to 4 The subject matter described herein may include material extensions 266 (e.g., Figure 6 liner or other sheet structure shown in FIG. Fig. 9 An illustration of an example of a material extension 266 is provided in FIG. Fig. 9 is based on Figure 5 In some examples, material extensions 266 may form dividers between mezzanine compartments, and material extensions 266 may help hold objects in place and reduce the likelihood that one or more of the objects may shift position while contained in the mezzanine compartments.

[0076] The material extension 266 may include a piece of material (e.g., an elastic resilient mesh similar to the material of pieces 230a and 230b or an elastic knit fabric similar to the fabric of layer 228a) that connects the first intermediate region 236 of the first layer 228 to the second intermediate region 246 of the second layer 230. The material extension may include a piece of material similar to the material of pieces 230a and 230b. Figures 1 to 4The material extension 266 may have similar characteristics to the material extension 166 described above. For example, the material extension 266 may include: a first edge 272 (e.g., an outer edge oriented away from the wearer and similar to the edge 172) attached to the first layer 228 (e.g., at least one of the first layers 228); a second edge 274 (e.g., an inner edge oriented toward the wearer and similar to the edge 174) attached to the second layer 230 (e.g., at least one of the second layers 230); and a top edge 268 (e.g., oriented toward the neck opening and similar to the first end 168), the top edge 268 connecting the first edge and the second edge and forming a span between the first edge and the second edge. In this sense, the top edge 268 may be connected to both the first layer 228 and the second layer 230 in some cases. The material extension 266 may also include a bottom edge 269, which is opposite the top edge and oriented toward the bottom band 219. In at least some examples, material extensions 266 are spaced apart from and not directly attached to bottom strip 219 , and thus, a space or gap may exist between bottom edge 269 and bottom strip 219 .

[0077] Edges 272 and 274 can be attached to the corresponding layers in various ways. In at least some instances, the seam that attaches edge 272 to first layer / sheet 228 includes one or more structures (e.g., portions of edge 272, stitches, seam tape, etc.), which can be attached to the surface (e.g., inner surface) of inner layer 228b and / or extend through inner layer 228b without being attached to outermost layer 228a. In some instances, the seam can be attached to layers 228b and 228c. In some instances, any portion of the seam is not attached to layer 228a. In some cases, the seam can be positioned between layers 228a to 228c, and is not visible on the outward-facing surface of layer 228a. In some cases, the construction can provide a neater aesthetic by limiting the seam on the front side of layer 228a (e.g., the visibility of the seam).

[0078] In at least some cases, the seam attaching edge 274 to second layer / sheet 230 includes one or more structures (e.g., portions of edge 274, stitching, seam tape, etc.) that may be attached to a surface (e.g., an outwardly facing surface) of outer layer 230b and / or extend through outer layer 230b without being attached to innermost layer 230a. In some instances, no portion of the seam is attached to layer 230a. In some cases, the seam may be positioned between layers 230a to 230b, and not positioned on the innermost surface of layer 230a. In some cases, the construction may reduce the possibility of potential skin irritation by limiting the seam on the inner face of layer 230a, which may face and contact the chest of the wearer.

[0079] Additionally, material extension 266 can include a width similar to width 176. In exemplary aspects, material extension 266 has a width from about 1 cm to about 4 cm. In some examples, the material extension can be rectangular. In some examples (e.g., Fig. 9 ), the material extension can taper from a wider top portion to a narrower bottom portion. In some examples, the material extension can be triangular.

[0080] Reference Figure 7 and Fig. 8A , dotted rectangle 280 indicates where the material extension may be attached to the corresponding layer. In at least some examples, garment 230 may include an offset 282 between the top line edge of the corresponding layer (e.g., neckline) and the upper edge of the connection between the layer and material extension 266. For example, the offset may be in the range of about 1 inch to about 6 inches. In operation, offset 282 may allow outer layer 282 to be more easily folded down to access the space between layers without affecting the ability of material extension 266 to help hold objects in place and resist displacement.

[0081] In examples of the present disclosure, material extensions 266 and related configurations can help form two separate compartments, where each compartment can accommodate, for example, a breast pump or a prosthesis. In examples, material extensions 266 help position the breast pump or prosthesis so that they are not displaced beyond the midline of support garment 210 when positioned in one of the compartments. Further, using a material extension having a width between the first edge and the second edge (rather than simply using stitching to secure the first and second intermediate regions together) can provide a compartment with a larger volume to better accommodate the volume of a breast pump or prosthesis, thereby making the support garment more comfortable to wear.

[0082] In examples of the present disclosure, one side (e.g., the left side) of the support garment 110 or 210 can be a mirror image of the other side (e.g., the right side) of the support garment 110 or 210, such that both the left and right sides include reflective structural symmetry and include features for holding an object (e.g., a multi-layer construction with one or more expansion gussets). In some examples, the sides of the support garment 110 or 210 can include reflective structural asymmetry, such that one side of the support garment 110 or 210 can include features for holding an object (e.g., a breast implant) while the other side omits one or more of these features. For example, the side of the support garment configured to hold an object (e.g., a breast implant) can include one or more of a multi-layer construction with a sandwich compartment, an opening in an inner layer, and / or different material types that form one or more expansion gussets (e.g., along a lower region of a breast covering portion and / or near the midline of the support garment). In addition, the opposite side of the support garment 110 or 210 that is not configured to hold an object can omit one or more features, such that the opposite side is a single layer (as opposed to multiple layers) or otherwise does not include a sandwich compartment, includes a solid inner layer that omits an opening, and / or omits one or more expansion gussets. A support garment with reflective structural asymmetry can be used in a variety of situations. For example, a support garment 110 or 210 can be customized for a wearer who uses a prosthetic breast only on one side and not on the other side (e.g., a wearer may have natural breast tissue on one side and a prosthesis on the other side).

[0083] Terms

In addition, "at least one of element A or element B" may include at least one of element A, at least one of element B, or at least one of element A and at least one of element B.
