[0024] The present disclosure describes methods and apparatus for coordinating user equipment (UE) capabilities for a dual standby state.

[0025] Next-generation (NG) mobile communication systems are driving the world towards an increasingly connected and networked society. High-speed and low-latency wireless communications rely on efficient network resource management and allocation between user devices and wireless access network nodes (including but not limited to wireless base stations). The next-generation network is expected to provide high-speed, low-latency and ultra-reliable communication capabilities, as well as meet the needs of different industries and users.

[0026] The present disclosure describes various embodiments for coordinating multiple networks in a dual-active state. In one or more scenarios, a user equipment (UE) may be connected to more than one network node at the same time. The network nodes may include, for example, one or more radio access network (RAN) nodes, and / or one or more core network (CN) nodes. In one implementation, the UE may be connected to two network nodes at the same time, which may be referred to as a "dual-active state", which requires the UE and / or one or more network nodes to coordinate multiple connections, thereby providing an efficient system for one or more scenarios.

[0027] One scenario may include that for a UE with multiple subscriber identity modules (multi-SIM) (or multiple universal user identity modules (multi-USIM)), the UE may be connected to multiple networks simultaneously. In another scenario, a UE with a single SIM may be connected to multiple networks simultaneously. Another scenario may include that a roaming UE may connect to multiple networks for different slices.

[0028] When a UE is configured to connect to multiple networks simultaneously, coordination of UE capabilities may be required. In some implementations with Radio Access Capability Signaling (RACS), UE radio access capabilities may be packaged as a predefined or network defined UE capability ID.

[0029] In various embodiments, for multiple SIMs (or multiple USIMs), the UE may connect to multiple networks simultaneously for different situations.

[0030] In some implementations with paging received on the second subscriber identity module (SIM2) when the first subscriber identity module (SIM1) is in a connected state, this can be solved by time division multiplexing (TDM), such as reserving a scheduling gap for SIM2. For connections with two networks that are not established simultaneously, there may be no coordination. However, for dual receive / transmit (RX) UEs, this solution may affect the performance of SIM1 by reserving a scheduling gap with a paging cycle. Another solution for dual RX UEs is to reserve some radio frequency or physical (RF / PHY) resources for paging reception. In some implementations with a short dual connection state, SIM1 may be in a connected state, while SIM2 has to perform some mobility updates, such as periodic registration, moving to a new registration area, or responding to paging. The UE may require collaborative capabilities during the short dual connection state. In some implementations with a long dual connection state, the UE may have a voice call on SIM1 and some other data services on SIM2 at the same time. The UE may require collaborative capabilities.

[0031] There may be some issues / problems that need to be addressed. For example, the hardware capabilities of a multi-SIM (or multi-USIM) UE may be shared by more than one SIM. In order to use the hardware efficiently and economically, the relevant capabilities need to be dynamically divided between more than one SIM. This may cause temporary hardware conflicts. For example, a UE is connected to one network (network A) and it will have some capability restrictions on another network (network B). Therefore, when the UE enters the connected state with network B, the UE needs to indicate the capability restrictions to network B.

[0032] The present disclosure describes various embodiments for coordinating user equipment (UE) capabilities for dual standby state, addressing at least one of the above issues / problems, providing solutions and / or improving the performance of wireless communications.

[0033] Figure 1 A wireless communication system 100 is shown that includes more than one radio network node (118 and 119) and one or more user equipments (UEs) (110, 111, and 112).

[0034] For the fifth generation mobile communication technology, UE 110 (e.g., a smart phone) may have a single subscriber identity module (SIM) or multiple subscriber identity modules (multi-SIM). When the UE has a single SIM, the UE may be connected to one network node 118, such as a radio access network (RAN) node and / or a core network (CN) node, or may be connected to more than one network node (118 and 119), such as two RAN nodes and / or two CN nodes. When the UE has multiple SIMs, the UE may be connected to more than one network node (118 and 119), such as two RAN nodes, two CN nodes, and / or one RAN node and one CN node.

[0035] The radio network nodes (118 and 119) may include network base stations, which may be nodeBs (NBs, such as eNBs or gNBs) in the context of mobile telecommunications. Each UE (110, 111, and / or 112) may wirelessly communicate with a radio network node (118 and / or 119) via one or more radio channels 115. For example, a first UE 110 may wirelessly communicate with a first network node 118 via a channel comprising a plurality of radio channels during a certain period of time; during another period of time or at the same time, the first UE 110 may wirelessly communicate with a second network node 119 via a channel comprising a plurality of radio channels.

[0067] This disclosure describes various exemplary embodiments for coordinating user equipment (UE) capabilities for a dual standby state, which are provided as examples and do not impose any limitations on the present disclosure.

[0068] Various embodiments address at least the issue of how a UE indicates a temporary capability restriction during connection establishment. The UE may send an early indication indicating the presence of a temporary capability restriction before reconfiguring the UE. The UE may send an early indication in a message during connection establishment or connection recovery. For non-limiting examples, the message may include Msg 1, Msg A, Msg 3, or Msg 5. Msg 3 may include an RRC setup request message or an RRC recovery request message; and / or Msg 5 may include an RRC setup complete message or an RRC recovery complete message.

[0069] In some implementations, reference Figure 6 , the UE (680) may include an early indication indicating a temporary capability restriction in Msg 3 in step 602 (or step 602A) or Msg 5 in step 604 (or step 604A). The UE 680 may include a SIM1 access stratum (AS) 682 and a SIM2 AS 684, which are configured to connect to SIM1 e / gNB A 692 and SIM2 e / gNB B 694, respectively.

[0070] Referring to step 600: the UE may be in a connected state with network A (692), and the UE may be in an idle or inactive state with network B.

[0071] Referring to step 601: the UE may need to establish a connection with network B (when the UE is in an idle state with network B); or the UE may need to resume a connection with network B (when the UE is in an inactive state with network B).

[0072] When the UE is in an idle state with network B and needs to establish a connection with limited capabilities, steps 602, 603 and 604 may be performed.

[0073] Referring to step 602, the UE may send an RRC setup request message (or Msg 3) to the network B. Referring to step 603, in response to receiving the RRC setup request message, the network B may send an RRC setup message. Referring to step 604, in response to receiving the RRC setup message, the UE sends an RRC setup complete message (or Msg 5) to the network B. In some implementations, the RRC setup request message in step 602 may include a UE capability limitation indication. In some other implementations, the RRC setup complete message in step 604 may include a UE capability limitation indication.

[0074] When the UE is in an inactive state with network B and needs to resume a connection with limited capabilities, steps 602A, 603A, and 604A may be performed.

[0075] Referring to step 602A, the UE may send an RRC recovery request message (or Msg 3) to network B. Referring to step 603A, in response to receiving the RRC recovery request message, network B may send an RRC recovery message. Referring to step 604A, in response to receiving the RRC recovery message, the UE sends an RRC recovery complete message (or Msg 5) to network B. In some implementations, the RRC recovery request message in step 602A may include a UE capability limitation indication. In some other implementations, the RRC recovery complete message in step 604A may include a UE capability limitation indication.

[0076] In some implementations, Asn.1 encoding may be used for UE capability limitation indication. For non-limiting example, the Asn.1 encoding for UE capability limitation indication in the RRC setup complete message may be as follows:

[0077] CapRestrictIndication ENUMERATED{true}Optional CapRestrictIndication can be used to indicate that there is a temporary capability restriction on the UE side.

[0078] Various embodiments address at least the issue of how a network node behaves upon receiving a temporary capability limitation.Upon receiving an early indication that a temporary capability limitation exists, the network may request the UE to report temporary capabilities.

[0079] In some implementations, the network may request the UE to report the temporary capability restriction in an RRC message or MAC CE. For example, the RRC message may be a reconfiguration message.

[0080] In some implementations, once the UE receives the request, the UE may report the temporary capability limitation in UE Assistance Information (UAI).

[0081] In some implementations, once the network acquires a temporary capability limitation, the network may reconfigure the UE.

[0082] In some implementations, reference Figure 7 Referring to step 700 of the method, the UE may be in a connected state with network A, and the UE may be in an idle state with network B. Referring to step 701, when the UE is in an idle state with network B, the UE may need to establish a connection with network B. Referring to step 702, the UE may send an RRC setup request message to network B. Referring to step 703, in response to receiving the RRC setup request message, network B may send an RRC setup message. Referring to step 704, in response to receiving the RRC setup message, the UE sends an RRC setup complete message including a temporary capability restriction indication to network B. Referring to step 705, in response to receiving the temporary capability restriction indication from the UE, network B may send an RRC message (or MAC CE) including a reconfiguration (e.g., other configuration) to request a temporary capability restriction. Referring to step 706, in response to receiving a request for a temporary capability restriction from network B, the UE may send UE assistance information including a temporary capability restriction to network B. Referring to step 707, in response to receiving the temporary capability restriction from the UE, network B may reconfigure the UE by sending a reconfiguration message to the UE.

[0083] In some implementations, the Asn.1 encoding may be used for requests for capability restrictions (or restrictions). For non-limiting example, for a request for capability restrictions included in a reconfiguration (reconfiguration->other configuration), the Asn.1 encoding may be as follows:

[0084] CapRestrictRequestIndication ENUMERATED{true}Optional CapRestrictRequestIndication can be used to request the UE to report temporary capability restrictions.

[0085] Various embodiments at least address the issue of when the UE sends an early indication (i.e., a trigger condition for the UE). The UE needs to know whether network B supports early indication indicating the presence of a temporary capability restriction. The network may indicate in system information that the network supports temporary capability restriction reporting.

[0086] In some implementations, an indication may be included in SIB1 indicating whether the UE is allowed to send an early indication indicating the presence of a temporary capability limitation and / or indicating whether it supports temporary capability limitation reporting.

[0087] In some implementations, reference Figure 8 : In step 800, network B may broadcast system information indicating that network B supports temporary capability limitation indication. Steps 600, 601, 602, 603, and 604 (or 602A, 603A, and 604A) may be the same as described above in other embodiments. Step 800 may be performed in other orders relative to other steps: for example, step 800 may occur before step 600; for another example, step 800 may occur after step 600; for another example, step 800 may occur before step 601; and / or for another example, step 800 may occur after step 601.

[0088] In some implementations, Asn.1 encoding may be used to indicate whether the network supports temporary capability restriction reporting. For non-limiting examples, Asn.1 encoding may be as follows to indicate whether the network supports temporary capability restriction reporting in SIB1:

[0089] CapRestrictSupportIndication ENUMERATED{true}Optional

[0090] Among them, CapRestrictSupportIndication can indicate whether the UE is allowed to send an "early indication indicating the existence of temporary capability restriction", or indicate whether the network supports temporary capability restriction reporting.

[0091] Various embodiments describe some enhancements for UEs in an inactive state with limited capabilities. When the UE is in an inactive state, the UE may send an RRC recovery request to network B. Due to temporary capability limitations, for example, when the network is not aware of the temporary capability limitations, the connection may not be successfully recovered. For this situation, when early indication is required, the UE has to send an early indication in the recovery request message. However, due to the size limit of the recovery request message, it may not be desirable to use the remaining 1 spare bit for the MUSIM feature. Therefore, as an enhanced mechanism / solution, the UE can directly enter the idle state.

[0092] In some implementations, for situations where the UE may not be able to restore the connection, the UE may immediately enter the idle state; and / or when it is necessary, the UE may send the RRC establishment procedure after entering the idle state.

[0093] In some implementations, reference Fig. 9 Referring to step 900: the UE may be in a connected state with network A, and the UE may be in an inactive state with network B. Referring to step 901: the UE may need to connect to network B. Referring to step 902, the UE may determine that the UE needs to return to an idle state because the UE determines that the UE may not be able to resume connection with network B due to a temporary capability (restriction). Referring to step 903, the UE returns to an idle state. Referring to step 904, the UE may send an RRC setup request message to network B. Referring to step 905, in response to receiving the RRC setup request message, network B may send an RRC setup message. Referring to step 906, in response to receiving the RRC setup message, the UE sends an RRC setup complete message to network B. In some implementations, the RRC setup request message may include a temporary capability restriction (or indication). In some implementations, the RRC setup complete message may include a temporary capability restriction (or indication).

[0094] refer to Fig. 9 , step 902 may be optional and may not be necessary for some implementations, where the UE enters the idle state and it is not certain whether the UE needs to return to the idle state and / or it is not certain whether the UE may be unable to resume connection with network B due to temporary capabilities (limitations).
