Description
[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0002] Pursuant to 35 U.S.C. §119(e), this application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 374,236, filed on August 31, 2022, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field
[0003] The present invention relates to systems for converting roll packaging materials, such as paper-based rolls, and other materials into protective packaging, and more particularly to a roll dispenser for supporting a roll of packaging material. Background Art
[0004] Protective packaging or padding is produced by wrinkling or otherwise deforming raw material. For example, padding can be produced by moving a generally continuous strip of raw material through a padding converter. The padding converter converts the raw material into a lower density padding material. The resulting padding can be cut to a desired length so as to effectively fill the void space within the container holding the product. Padding material can be produced as needed for an individual or machine performing the packaging operation. Summary of the invention
[0005] Rollstock used to produce protective packaging materials include plastic- and paper-based rollstock, including heavy-duty, commercial and industrial bubble rolls, void-fill paper packaging, surface protection papers, grocery and food service papers, and printed / laminated films.
[0006] When used as padding material, paper-based padding materials have various advantages. On the one hand, paper-based padding materials can provide protection to prevent damage from shock and vibration. On the other hand, compared with other types of packaging materials (such as plastics), paper has a higher biodegradation rate. On the other hand, paper is very easy to recycle. In addition, paper is a sustainable material because it is mainly composed of forest products in nature.
[0007] Expandable paper (or "expandable paper") is an example of a paper-based dunnage material. The raw paper material includes slits formed therein. As the raw paper is pulled from a dispenser, tension is applied to the dispensed paper, causing the slits to open, forming a grid structure. This grid structure can provide a protective cushion or spacing for fragile products. Additionally, the grid structure of the expandable paper can nest with itself, reducing or eliminating the need for tape or other adhesives to hold the expandable paper in place.
[0008] However, it can be appreciated that the realization of these advantages of expandable paper depends, at least in part, on the ability of the dispenser to apply tension to the dispensed paper approximately uniformly and at an appropriate target level. In one aspect, when tension is not applied approximately uniformly, with tension in certain areas being significantly higher or lower than in other areas, the resulting grid structure may be non-uniform. In one aspect, applying tension significantly below the target level can result in localized or no formation of a grid structure. In another aspect, applying tension significantly above the target can result in damage (e.g., tearing) of the dispensed paper. In either case, the grid of the dispensed paper may be incomplete and / or damaged, thereby compromising its protective cushioning or spacing capabilities.
[0009]
[0006] Therefore, there is a need for a dispenser that is capable of dispensing a continuous, expandable / expandable stock material, such as paper, while applying a substantially uniform tension thereto.
[0010] The roll dispenser may include a chuck assembly and a base. The chuck assembly preferably includes a first chuck unit and a base for receiving the first chuck unit. The first chuck unit includes a compression system, which includes a first side and a second side. The first side of the compression system may include at least one anti-rotation element. The second side of the compression system may include at least a first plug, which is arranged to engage the core of the raw material roll. The first brake is operatively connected to the first plug and the anti-rotation element so as to establish friction between the first plug and the anti-rotation element, and the friction resists the rotation of the first plug relative to the anti-rotation element when the packaging material is pulled out of the roll. The first handle assembly may be arranged to adjust the compression force applied between the first side and the second side of the compression system. The base is arranged to support the chuck assembly at the anti-rotation element. When the chuck assembly is supported by the base, the second side of the compression system is arranged to rotate about the rotation axis, and the first side of the compression system is prevented from rotating about the rotation axis by the anti-rotation element and the base. By providing the above arrangement of the chuck assembly and the base, a substantially uniform tension can be applied to open the expandable paper preferably provided as a raw material roll. In particular, expandable paper (also referred to as expandable paper) is typically formed with a plurality of slits that can be opened under tension, wherein the compression force can be adjusted by a first handle assembly.
[0011] According to the present invention, a roll dispenser for supporting a roll of packaging material comprises: a base; and a chuck assembly, the chuck assembly comprising a first chuck unit, wherein the first chuck unit comprises: a first mounting member, the first mounting member being mounted on the base so that the base limits the rotation of the first mounting member mounted thereon; a first plug, the first plug being arranged to be inserted into a first axial end of a core of the roll of packaging material and locked to rotate together with the core; and a first brake, the first brake being operatively connected to the first plug and the first mounting member so as to establish friction between the first plug and the first mounting member, the friction resisting the rotation of the first plug relative to the first mounting member when the packaging material is pulled out of the roll.

[0045] A system for converting a high density raw material into a low density padding material is disclosed. The raw material is processed by a dispenser that is configured to apply tension substantially uniformly across the width of the material dispensed from the dispenser. The supply of raw material can be stored in rolls, and the raw material can be continuous or perforated. When the raw material is an expandable material, the applied tension causes the slits to open, thereby forming a grid structure. Padding containing such a grid structure can provide a protective cushion or spacing for fragile products. In yet another embodiment of the dispenser, the amount of tension applied can be easily adjusted so that a grid can be substantially formed without damaging the dispensed padding material.
[0046] Dispenser embodiments of the present invention are discussed herein in the context of paper stock. However, it will be appreciated that the disclosed embodiments may be used with any suitable type of material. Examples may include, but are not limited to, virgin and recycled paper based on pulp, newsprint, cellulose and starch compositions, and polymeric or synthetic materials (e.g., thermoplastic materials, such as plastic material webs), etc. Other examples of paper materials may have a basis weight of about 20 lbs to about 100 lbs. The stock may also have any other suitable characteristics, such as thickness, weight, and size.
[0047] Figure 1is a perspective view showing a roll dispenser 10 and a chuck assembly 12 according to a first embodiment of the present invention, the chuck assembly 12 including a first chuck unit 20 and a second chuck unit 80, and Figure 2 yes Figure 1 An exploded perspective view of the roll dispenser 10. Figure 1 and 2 The first chuck unit 20 is configured to axially apply a substantially uniform tension to the raw material roll 2 arranged on the roll dispenser 10, including applying a compressive force in the axial direction.
[0048] refer to Figure 1-2 , the roll dispenser 10 includes a base 30 and first and second chuck units 20, 80, which are configured to be mounted on the base 30. According to the first embodiment, the chuck assembly 12 includes the first chuck unit 20 and the second chuck unit 80. In other embodiments, the first and second chuck units 20, 80 can be replaced by a single chuck unit, as described herein.
[0049] refer to Figure 3 , the first chuck unit 20 may include a compression system having a first side 42 and a second side 44 and an interface 50. The interface 50 is configured to adjust the compressive force applied between the first side 42 and the second side 44 of the compression system. The base 30 may be configured to engage and support the first chuck unit 20. When the first chuck unit 20 engages with the base 30, the second side 44 of the compression system and the raw material roll 2 connected thereto can be configured to rotate around the rotation axis of the roll 2. In addition, when the first chuck unit 20 engages with the base 30, the first side 42 of the compression system can be prevented from rotating around the rotation axis.
[0050] As described in more detail below, in certain embodiments, the interface 50 can include a first threaded rod 52, which is connected to a part (e.g., a first handle 54) that can be gripped by a user (i.e., an operator) or otherwise engaged with a machine for rotating the threaded rod, such as a first handle 54, a knob, etc. For purposes of discussion below, the term "handle" or "knob" will be used. However, it will be appreciated that the parts included as a part of the interface 50 can be in other forms without limitation.
[0051] The first threaded rod 52 can extend along the local or whole length of the compression system. For example, the first threaded rod 52 preferably ends at the first plug 60. When arranged like this, the handover 50 can be manually rotated by the user, or automatically rotated by the machine. The contact between the surfaces of the parts of the first chuck unit 20 causes friction. Therefore, the friction force of the rotation of the second side 44 of the resistance compression system and the raw material roll 2 connected with it can depend on the compressive force applied, and can be regulated by the handover 50.
[0052] In an alternative embodiment (not shown), the rotation of the interface 50 can be controlled by a machine. For example, the machine can be directly connected to the first threaded rod 52 (e.g., through a motor and a drive train). In such a configuration, a handle or knob can be omitted because the machine can directly control the rotation of the first threaded rod 52 without the need to manually grasp any components.
[0053] The compression system may optionally include one or more components to facilitate adjusting the rotational resistance. One or more components may be positioned on the first side 42 of the compression system, the second side 44 of the compression system, or both sides. Therefore, the compressive force applied between the first side 42 and the second side 44 of the compression system becomes the net value of the compressive force applied by the interface 50 and the opposing tension force generated by the friction between the components on the first side 42 and the second side 44 of the compression system. Alternatively or in addition, one or more components can include a bearing surface (not shown) for transmitting the compressive force within the compression system.
[0054] Furthermore, in one embodiment, one or more components can include a spring 55 (see Figure 3 ). Generally, the spring 55 can be configured to allow for a more gradual change in the compressive force. For example, when the spring 55 is compressed from its equilibrium position, it applies an opposing force (tension) in a direction toward the equilibrium position. This attenuation of the compressive force applied by the interface 50 can provide a more gradual change in the compressive force than would be provided by the interface 50 alone. This in turn allows for a more gradual change in the resistance to rotation of the raw material roll 2 relative to the base 30.
[0055] In use, the core 4 of the roll 2 of packaging material (e.g., expandable raw material) can be axially connected to the first plug 60 for installation on the roll dispenser 10. When the roll 2 of expandable raw material is installed in the roll dispenser 10 and the first layer / outer layer of the expandable raw material is pulled away from the roll 2, the roll 2 is urged to rotate around the rotation axis together with the second side 44 of the compression system. This rotation is opposite to the rotational resistance provided by the compression force applied between the first side 42 and the second side 44 of the compression system. The rotational resistance provided by the compression force can be adjusted to a value that allows the expandable raw material to expand substantially uniformly while the roll 2 is rotated and the expandable raw material is dispensed. In this way, the development of uneven areas of expansion and / or tearing of the expandable raw material can be substantially avoided during dispensing.
[0056] Embodiments of roll dispensers having different configurations will be described in more detail below.
[0057] Figure 2-9 is a view of a first embodiment of a roll dispenser. For example, referring to Figure 2-6The roll dispenser 10 includes a base 30 and a chuck assembly 12, the chuck assembly 12 including a first chuck unit 20 and a second chuck unit 80. The base 30 includes: a base support 32 extending in a longitudinal (or axial) direction; and a pair of supports 34, 36 extending in an upright manner from a first end 31 and a second end 33 of the base support 32, respectively (see Figure 7 ). Each of the pair of supports 34, 36 can be mounted on the base support 32 so that the pair of supports 34, 36 are offset from each other by a longitudinal offset 35. At least one slot (e.g., a first slot 38 and a second slot 39) can be formed adjacent to a free end 37 of each of the pair of supports 34, 36. As described in more detail below, the at least one slot 38, 39 is configured to receive the first and second chuck units 20, 80 for mounting the raw material roll 2 on the roll dispenser 10.
[0058] exist Figure 3-4 The first chuck unit 20 is shown in more detail in FIG. Figure 3 is an exploded view of the first chuck unit 20, Figure 4 2 is an assembled cross-sectional view of the first chuck unit 20. As shown, the first chuck unit 20 corresponds to the first side 42 and the second side 44 of the compression system and the interface 50. The first side 42 of the compression system preferably includes a first liner 70 of a generally planar shape and a first mounting member 72 connected to the first side of the first liner 70, wherein the first mounting member 72 serves as an anti-rotation element. The second side 44 of the compression system preferably includes a second liner 74 of a generally planar shape. The first shaft 62 is connected to the first side of the second liner 74, and the first plug 60 is connected to the second side of the first liner 70.
[0059] As provided herein, the first and second pads 70, 74 constitute a first brake and can be arranged to form a surface contact area or region (e.g., a plane) to establish frictional contact, wherein the first and second pads 70, 74 are preferably formed to be substantially the same size and shape. The friction force generated by the contact between the first pad 70 and the second pad 74 can be adjusted by adjusting the compression force by the interface (e.g., the first handle assembly) 50. Preferably, when the packaging material roll 2 is made of expandable paper, the first brake is operable to adjust the friction between the first mounting member 72 and the first plug 60 (e.g., between the first pad 70 connected to the first mounting member 72 and the second pad 74 connected to the first plug 60) so as to be sufficient to open one or more slits of the expandable paper without tearing the expandable paper.
[0060] The first chuck unit 20 includes at least an interface (e.g., a first handle assembly) 50 operatively connected to the first plug 60, and also includes a first mounting member 72, which is configured to engage the first plug 60, such as by surrounding or encircling the first plug 60 so that the first plug 60 can rotate within the first mounting member 72. The base 30 is configured to support the first chuck unit 20 through a fixed contact point with the first mounting member 72, wherein the first plug 60 is configured to rotate about a rotation axis, and the first mounting member 72 is prevented from rotating about the rotation axis by being fixed to the base 30.
[0061] refer to Figure 3 For example, the first mounting member 72 preferably includes a non-circular outer surface 73 (e.g., a square or hexagonal surface with straight edges) so that the outer surface 73 can be restricted and prevented from rotating when mounted on the base 30. In particular, when the first mounting member 72 is mounted on the base 30, because the first mounting member 72 includes the non-circular outer surface 73, its rotation within the base 30 will be substantially restricted or prevented.
[0062] The first plug 60 includes a distal portion for insertion into a first axial end of the core 4 of the expandable raw material roll 2, and a proximal portion defining a first axis 62. In particular, the first plug 60 can be formed into an interference fit or otherwise received in the core 4 of the expandable raw material roll 2, thereby being locked to rotate with the core 4. In addition, the first plug 60 and the first axis 62 are configured to rotate together around a rotation axis, wherein the first axis 62 is configured to be operatively connected to the interface (first handle assembly) 50. The first axis 62 can be coaxially received inside the first mounting member 72, but preferably is in minimal contact with the first mounting member 72 received in the base 30, thereby allowing the first plug 60 connected to the first axis 62 to rotate freely in the axial direction.
[0063] The interface 50 includes: a first handle 54; a first threaded rod 52 extending from the first handle 54; and a channel 63 formed in the first shaft 62. The first threaded rod 52 extends through the channel 63 and is fixed to the first shaft 62. In one example, the first shaft 62 can be hollow, and a nut 64 (such as a locking nut) can be positioned therein. The nut 64 can threadably engage the first threaded rod 52 to fix the first threaded rod 52 (and the first handle 54) to the first shaft 62. The interface 50 adjusts the compression force by rotating the first handle 54 to push the first gasket 70 and the second gasket 74 toward or away from each other.
[0064] Optionally, a friction layer 66 may be provided on at least one of the first and second pads 70, 74. The friction layer 66 is formed of a material that increases the friction caused by the rotation of the second pad 74 relative to the first pad 70 when the first pad 70 and the second pad 74 are arranged in contact with each other. In some embodiments, the friction layer 66 may be formed of vinyl. However, other materials that increase the friction between the two surfaces in contact may be used. In embodiments where two friction layers are used (a first friction layer on the first pad 70 and a second friction layer on the second pad 74), the first friction layer and the second friction layer may be formed of the same material or different materials.
[0065] like Figure 3-4 As shown, the first side 42 of the compression train can also include a pressure cap 58 and a spring 55. The pressure cap 58 is positioned between the first mount 72 and the first handle 54 and can also define a cavity that is sized to receive a portion of the first shaft 62. The spring 55 can be positioned around the periphery of the first shaft 62 and between the end of the first mount 72 opposite the first gasket 70 and the end of the pressure cap 58 opposite the first handle 54. As described above, when the first handle 54 is rotated to force the first gasket 70 and the second gasket 74 into contact, the spring 55 is compressed (e.g., between the first mount 72 and the pressure cap 58). The compression spring applies tension when compressed, thereby reducing the compressive force applied to the first side 42 and the second side 44 of the compression train according to the rotation of the first handle 54. Therefore, with the spring 55, the rotation of the first handle 54 results in a more gradual increase in the compressive force than without the spring 55.
[0066] It will be appreciated that in alternative embodiments, the spring 55 may be positioned on the second side 44 of the compression train or at other locations within the first side 42 of the compression train.
[0067] exist Figure 5-6 The second chuck unit 80 is shown in more detail in FIG. Figure 5 It is an exploded view. Figure 6 The second chuck unit 80 includes: a substantially planar gasket 82 ; a second plug 84 connected to a first side of the third base 82 ; a second shaft 86 connected to a second side of the third base 82 ; a second mounting member 88 ; and a second handle 90 .
[0068] The second handle 90 and the second plug 84 can be rigidly connected together. As an example, a second threaded rod 92 can be connected to the second handle 90 and configured to engage with the second shaft 86 and the second plug 84. For example, the channel 83 can be formed in the second mounting member 88. The second threaded rod 92 is configured to extend through the channel 83 and can be fixed to the second shaft 86 by corresponding threads (e.g., the channel) in the second shaft 86. In one example, the second shaft 86 can be hollow and a nut 94 (e.g., a locking nut) can be positioned therein. The nut 94 can threadably engage the second threaded rod 92 to fix the second threaded rod 92 (and the second handle 90) to the second shaft 86.
[0069] like Figure 5-6 As shown, the second threaded rod 92 can be tightened by the second handle 90 to fix the handle 90 on the second plug 84. As a result, the second chuck unit 80 is locked to rotate with the core 4 of the packaging material roll 2. The second mounting member 88 can be received on the base 30, wherein the second mounting member 88 can have a circular or non-circular outer surface to be received in the base 30.
[0070] Reference again Figure 1-2 , the first and second chuck units 20, 80 can be received in at least one slot 38, 39 on the base 30. In particular, once assembled, the first chuck unit 20 and the second chuck unit 80 are arranged so that the first plug 60 and the second plug 84 are configured to engage opposite ends of the core 4 of the raw material roll 2. Figure 3 As shown, the first plug 60 may include a first plurality of ribs 61 mounted circumferentially around the inner axis of the first plug 60. Figure 5 As shown, the second plug 84 may include a second plurality of ribs 85 mounted circumferentially around the inner axis of the second plug 84. The first plurality of ribs 61 and the second plurality of ribs 85 may each extend radially outward from the rotation axis when the first chuck unit 20 and the second chuck unit 80 are mounted to the base 30.
[0071] The first plurality of ribs 61 and the second plurality of ribs 85 are sized so that radially facing surfaces of the first plurality of ribs 61 and the second plurality of ribs 85 can contact the inner circumference of the core 4 of the raw material roll 2. In this way, the first chuck unit 20 and the second chuck unit 80 can be connected to the raw material roll 2 by interference fit between the core 4 and the first plug 60 and the second plug 84, respectively.
[0072] As provided herein, according to one or more embodiments of the present invention, the first and second chuck units 20, 80 can be disposed on opposite ends of the raw material roll 2. For example, in one embodiment, two first chuck units 20 can be disposed on opposite ends of the roll 2. Alternatively, in another embodiment, two second chuck units 80 can be disposed on opposite ends of the roll 2. In some embodiments, the opposite ends of the roll 2 will include one first chuck unit 20 and one second chuck unit 80.
[0073] Figure 7 yes Figure 1-2 1 is a perspective view of a base 30 of a roll dispenser 10. As shown, the base 30 includes a base support 32 extending in a longitudinal direction and a pair of supports 34, 36. The supports 34, 36 extend from a first end 31 and a second end 33 of the base support 32 to respective free ends 37. The pair of supports 34, 36 may be generally planar and mounted on the base support 32 substantially parallel to each other while being arranged substantially orthogonal to the base support 32. In addition, the pair of supports 34, 36 are longitudinally offset from each other by a longitudinal offset 35.
[0074] At least one slot (e.g., first and second slots 38, 39) is also formed at the free ends 37 of the pair of supports 34, 36, i.e., away from the intersection between the supports 34, 36 and the base support 32. In one embodiment, the at least one slot includes a first slot 38 extending from the free end 37 of each of the pair of supports 34, 36. In another embodiment, the at least one slot may also include a second slot 39 extending from the side of each of the pair of supports 34, 36. In some embodiments, only the first slot 38 or the second slot 39 is provided. In other embodiments, both the first slot 38 and the second slot 39 are provided.
[0075] The at least one slot of the first support member 34 is configured to receive the first mounting member 72 of the first chuck unit 20 (see Figure 3-4 ), and the at least one slot of the second support member 36 is configured to receive the second mounting member 88 of the second chuck unit 80 (see Figure 5-6 ). In this way, the chuck assembly 12 can be supported by the base 30 together with the raw material roll 2 connected to the chuck assembly 12. Because the first mounting member 72 is received in at least one slot of the base 30, for example, the base 30 itself does not need to be adjustable. Instead, the resistance is generated in the chuck assembly 12 itself. In the case of the first mounting member 72 (which can be fixed to the base 30 when in use), the adjustability of the compression force is performed by the interface (e.g., the first handle assembly) 50.
[0076] like Figure 8-9As further shown in FIG. 1 , the first and second slots 38, 39 are configured to facilitate mounting the raw material roll 2 in different orientations relative to the base support 32 of the base 30. For example, the supports 34, 36 may each include a first slot 38 and a second slot 39 arranged in a substantially similar or identical manner, wherein the first slot 38 and the second slot 39 are present on both supports 34, 36.
[0077] Figure 8 yes Figure 1-2 1 is a view of the roll dispenser 10 in a first orientation, for example, wherein the first and second chuck units 20, 80 are received within the first slot 38. When the roll dispenser 10 is arranged on a horizontal surface (i.e., the base layer 30 is arranged in contact with the horizontal surface), the first slot 38 extends from the free end 37 of the support members 34, 36 toward the base support member 32. Therefore, gravity is applied to the roller 2 to retain the first and second chuck units 20, 80 within the first slot 38.
[0078] Fig. 9 yes Figure 1-2 1 is a view of the roll dispenser 10 in a second orientation, wherein the first and second chuck units 20, 80 are received in the second slot 39. When the roll dispenser 10 is mounted on a vertical wall, for example, when the base support 32 is arranged in contact with the vertical wall, the second slot 39 is oriented vertically. Therefore, gravity is applied to the roller 2 to keep the first and second chuck units 20, 80 in the second slot 39.
[0079] Figure 10-12 A second embodiment of a roll dispenser according to the invention is shown. In the second embodiment, the roll dispenser is provided with a chuck assembly which preferably comprises a single chuck unit 120, as opposed to the multiple chuck units described in relation to the first embodiment.
[0080] Fig.10 1 is an exploded perspective view of a roll dispenser 110 including a base 130 and a single cartridge unit 120 having a plurality of plugs. The single cartridge unit 120 will be referred to below as Fig.11 The base 130 will be described in more detail below. Fig.12 More details.
[0081] Fig.11 yes Fig.10 1. As shown, the compression system may include: a first side 142 having an interface 150 for adjusting the compressive force acting on the roll dispenser 110; and a second side 144 including a shaft 162, which is configured to be received by at least one slot disposed in the base 130 (see Fig.12). The shaft 162 preferably extends between a first end 163 and a second end 165. The shaft 162 is configured to receive a generally planar second liner 174. In addition, the first portion 164 of the shaft 162 can be used as an anti-rotation element, wherein the first portion 164 is preferably disposed near the first end 163 of the shaft 162.
[0082] The first side 142 of the compression train includes: a generally planar first gasket 170; a first plug 160 connected to the first gasket 170; a second plug 184; a first mounting member 172 disposed between the first plug 160 and the second plug 184; and a second mounting member 188 located on a side of the second plug 184 opposite the first mounting member 172. The first gasket 170, the first plug 160, the second plug 184, the first mounting member 172, and the second mounting member 188 each include a corresponding slot extending therethrough that is sized to receive the shaft 162.
[0083] The interface 150 may include a knob 154 (or handle), a threaded rod 152 extending from the knob 154, and a threaded channel 167 formed in the second end 165 of the shaft 162. In use, the shaft 162 is preferably inserted into the channels of the second liner 174, the first plug 160, the second plug 184, the first mounting member 172 and the second mounting member 188, and the threaded rod 152 is preferably engaged with the threaded channel 167 formed in the shaft 162. When so configured, the first liner 170 and the second liner 174 face each other. The compression force between the first side 142 and the second side 144 of the compression system is adjusted by the rotation of the knob 154, which will push the first liner 170 and the second liner 174 toward or away from each other.
[0084] Optionally, as described above, a single chuck unit 120 may include one or more springs to allow for a more gradual adjustment of the compression force than would be possible without the springs. The springs may be disposed in the first side 142 of the compression system, the second side 144 of the compression system, or both the first side 142 and the second side 144 of the compression system. For example, Fig.11 As shown, the spring 155 may be disposed between the second plug 184 and the second mount 188 , and the additional spring 157 may be disposed between the first plug 160 and the first mount 172 .
[0085] Optionally, a friction layer 166 may be disposed on at least one of the first and second pads 170, 174. The friction layer 166 is preferably formed of a material that increases friction caused by rotation of the second pad 174 relative to the first pad 160 when the first pad 160 and the second pad 174 are disposed in contact with each other. In certain embodiments, the friction layer 166 may be formed of vinyl. However, other materials that increase friction between two surfaces in contact may be employed. In embodiments where two friction layers are employed (e.g., a first friction layer disposed on the first pad 160 and a second friction layer disposed on the second pad 174), the first friction layer and the second friction layer may be formed of the same material or of different materials.
[0086] The first plug 160 and the second plug 184 are configured to engage the core 4 of the raw material roll 2. In one embodiment, the first plug 160 may include an internal mounting member (not labeled) and a first plurality of ribs 161 circumferentially mounted thereon. The second plug 184 may include an internal mounting member (not labeled) and a second plurality of ribs 186 circumferentially mounted thereon. When a single chuck unit 120 is mounted to the base 130, the first plurality of ribs 161 and the second plurality of ribs 186 may each extend radially outward from the axis of rotation.
[0087] The first and second pluralities of ribs 161, 186 are sized so that radially facing surfaces of the first and second pluralities of ribs 161, 186 contact the inner periphery of the core 4 of the stock roll 2. In this way, a single chuck unit 120 can be connected to the stock roll 2 by an interference fit between the core 2 and the first and second plugs 160, 184, respectively.
[0088] Fig.12 is set to Fig.10 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a base 130 for use with a roll dispenser 110. As shown, the base 130 includes a base support 132 extending in a longitudinal direction and a pair of supports 134, 136 extending from a first end 131 and a second end 133 of the base support 132 to respective free ends 137. The pair of supports 134, 136 may be generally planar and mounted on the base support 132 substantially parallel to each other while being arranged substantially orthogonal to the base support 132. In addition, the pair of supports 134, 136 are longitudinally offset from each other by a longitudinal offset 135.
[0089] First and second slots 175, 177 may be formed at opposite free ends 137 of a pair of support members 134, 136, respectively, and are positioned away from the intersection between the support members 134, 136 and the base support member 132. The first slot 175 is preferably configured to receive the first portion 164 of the shaft 162. The second slot 177 is preferably configured to receive the second mounting member 188. Therefore, when the first portion 164 of the shaft 162 is received in the first slot 175 and the second mounting member 188 is received in the second slot 177, the single chuck unit 120 and the raw material roll 2 mounted thereon are supported by the base 130.
[0090] In an embodiment, the cross-sectional shape of the first portion 164 of the shaft 162 has two substantially parallel sides, and the first slot 175 includes a locking portion 179 having two substantially parallel sides sized to receive the first portion 164 of the shaft 162. The locking portion 179 of the first slot 175 is configured to prevent rotation of the first side 142 of the compression train about the axis of rotation when the first portion 164 of the shaft 162 is received therein.
[0091] like Figure 11-12 As shown, the second mounting member 188 preferably has a generally curved cross-sectional shape, and the second slot 177 includes a bearing portion 181 having a curved surface. The bearing portion 181 of the second slot 177 is configured to allow the second side 144 of the compression system to rotate about the rotation axis when the second mounting member 188 is received therein.
[0092] The locking portion 179 and / or the support portion 181 constitute a recessed area of the pair of support members 134, 136, and are therefore configured to receive and support the first and second mounting members 172, 188 by gravity.
[0093] Optionally, in Fig.12 17, the first slot 175 and the second slot 177 may each further include a respective mouth portion 183, 185 having a stepped entrance area. When present, the mouth portion 183 of the first slot 175 is disposed between the locking portion 179 and the free end 137 of the first support member 134 and has a greater width than the locking portion 179. When present, the mouth portion 185 of the second slot 177 is disposed between the support portion 181 and the free end 137 of the second support member 136 and preferably has a greater width than the support portion 181. The greater width of the mouth portions 183, 185 of the first and second slots 175, 177 as compared to the width of the locking portion 179 and the support portion 181 may facilitate the insertion of a single chuck unit 120 (e.g., the first portion 164 of the shaft 162 and the second mounting member 188) into the first and second slots 175, 177.
[0094] In yet another embodiment, the lengths of the first and second slots 175, 177 can extend at a non-zero angle relative to a reference line (e.g., a vertical axis) perpendicular to the base support. Combined with the mouth portions 183, 185 of the first and second slots 175, 177, the angles of the first and second slots 175, 177 relative to the reference line can facilitate the insertion of a single chuck unit 120 into the first and second slots 175, 177.
[0095] like Fig.12 As shown, the first and second slots 175, 177 extend from the free ends 137 of the first and second supports 134, 136. However, in an alternative embodiment (not shown), the first slot 175 can extend from a side of the first support 134 that extends along at least a portion of the length of the first support 134, and the second slot 177 can extend from a side of the first support 136 that extends along at least a portion of the length of the first support 136. As described above, the above-described arrangement of the first slots 175 and the second slots 177 can facilitate mounting the base 130 in different orientations (e.g., a desktop mount and a wall mount). In some embodiments, the base 130 can include multiple pairs of first slots 175 and second slots 177 extending from the ends and / or sides of the first and second supports 134, 136.
[0096] Figure 13-15 A third embodiment of a roll dispenser 210 according to the present invention is shown. In the third embodiment, the roll dispenser is provided with a chuck assembly, which preferably comprises a single chuck unit 220, wherein Fig.15 yes Figure 13-14 An alternative variation of the single chuck unit 220 shown in FIG.
[0097] refer to Fig.13 , a single chuck unit 220 is provided to be fixed in a cantilever configuration on a base 230 on which a raw material roll 2 is mounted. Fig.14 It is indicated in Fig.13 Exploded view of the chuck assembly.
[0098] like Fig.13 As shown, the base 230 includes: a base support 232 extending in the longitudinal direction; and a single substantially planar support 234 mounted on a first surface of the base support 232. In contrast to the above-described embodiment, the end of the single chuck unit 220 is configured to be connected to the support 234 instead of being received in the slot.
[0099] Fig.13 The chuck assembly is similar to Fig.11However, the first end 263 of the shaft 262 is arranged to be rigidly connected to the support 234. Therefore, the second side 244 of the compression system includes the support 234 of the base 230, and the first end 263 of the shaft 262 is rigidly connected to the support 234 of the base 230 and acts as an anti-rotation element.
[0100] Similar to Fig.11 In the embodiment of the present invention, the first side 242 of the compression system includes a generally planar gasket 270, a first plug 260 connected to the base 270, a second plug 284, a first mounting member 272 disposed between the first plug 260 and the second plug 284, and a second mounting member 288 located on a side of the second plug 284 opposite the first mounting member 272. The base 270, the first plug 260, the second plug 284, the first mounting member 272, and the second mounting member 288 each include a corresponding slot extending therethrough that is sized to receive the shaft 262.
[0101] Likewise, similar to Fig.11 In the embodiment of the present invention, the interface 250 includes a knob (or handle) 254, a threaded rod 252 extending from the knob 254, and a threaded channel 267 formed in the second end 265 of the shaft 262. The interface 250 is configured to adjust the compression force by rotating the knob 254 so as to push the base 270 toward or away from the support 234.
[0102] Alternatively, as described above, the friction layer 266 may be disposed on a surface of the support 234 that is opposite the base 270 , on a surface of the base 270 , or both.
[0103] Optionally, one or more springs (eg, spring 255) may be disposed in the first side 242 of the compression train, in the second side 244 of the compression train, or in both.
[0104] The first plug 260 and the second plug 284 can be configured to engage the core 4 of the raw material roll 2 as described above. In an embodiment, the first plug 260 can include an inner mounting member (not labeled) and the first plurality of ribs 261 can be circumferentially mounted on the inner mounting member. The second plug 284 can include an inner mounting member (not labeled) and a second plurality of ribs 286 circumferentially mounted on the inner mounting member. Each of the first plurality of ribs 261 and the second plurality of ribs 286 can extend radially outward from the axis of rotation.
[0105] The raw material roll 2 may be mounted on the roll dispenser 210 by horizontally moving the roll 2 while the core 4 and the single chuck unit 220 are axially aligned. The first plurality of ribs 261 and the second plurality of ribs 286 are sized so that radially facing surfaces of the first plurality of ribs 261 and the second plurality of ribs 286 contact the inner circumference of the core 4 of the raw material roll 2. In this way, the single chuck unit 220 may be connected to the raw material roll 2 by interference fit between the core 4 and the first plug 260 and the second plug 284, respectively.
[0106] Fig.15 A variation of the chuck assembly is shown, which includes a single chuck unit 330 as Fig.13 The roll dispenser 210 is replaced by a single chuck unit 230 . Fig.15 The single chuck unit 330 is Fig.12 The single chuck unit 230 of the embodiment of the present invention is constructed and operated in a similar manner, except that the first and second plugs 260, 284 are replaced by a single plug 360 operatively connected to the shaft 363, wherein the single plug 360 is composed of a plurality of radial fins 361 mounted on the outer surface of the first mounting member 372, wherein the radial fins 361 can be arranged circumferentially around the first mounting member 372. When so constructed, the radial fins 361 can extend along at least a portion of the length of the first mounting member 372. The second mounting member 388 has a plurality of radial fins 361 and a plurality of radial fins 361. Fig.12 The second mounting member 288 shown in FIG. 350 has a similar structure and function. In particular, the compression force in the longitudinal / axial direction can be adjusted by using a knob 354 or a handle.
