Abstract
Description
[0001] Cross-reference to related applications
[0002] This application claims the benefit of priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 489,017, filed March 8, 2023, entitled “Personal Care Compositions,” the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety for all purposes. Background Technology
[0003] Skin care offers numerous benefits beyond restoring a youthful, radiant appearance. Every day, skin naturally sheds dead skin cells; however, due to aging, sun damage, or exposure to environmental pollutants, this natural shedding process can slow down and may even stop completely. Our skin becomes dull, dry, flaky, and wrinkled. By gently removing accumulated dead skin cells, you can restore firm, beautiful, and even-toned skin.
[0004] Many personal care products currently available to consumers primarily focus on improving skin health and / or appearance. For example, a variety of topical skin care products are available that address delaying, reducing, or even eliminating dry skin, wrinkles, and other histological changes typically associated with skin aging or environmental damage to human skin. Consequently, the sale of personal care products has become a booming industry in a youth-conscious society.
[0005] There is an increasing demand for personal care formulations with anti-aging, exfoliating, and brightening effects, which provide a healthy-looking glow while evening out skin tone. Summary of the Invention

[0060] For illustrative purposes, the principles of the invention are described by reference to various exemplary embodiments thereof. While certain embodiments of the invention have been specifically described herein, those skilled in the art will readily recognize that the same principles are equally applicable to and can be used in other devices and methods. Before detailing the disclosed embodiments of the invention, it should be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of any particular embodiment disclosed herein. The terminology used herein is for descriptive purposes and not for limiting purposes.
[0061] As used herein and in the appended claims, the singular form includes the plural reference unless the context otherwise requires. The singular form of any class of ingredients refers not only to a single chemical substance within that class but also to mixtures of such chemical substances. The terms “an,” “one or more,” and “at least one” are used interchangeably herein. The terms “comprising,” “including,” and “having” are used interchangeably. The term “comprising” should be interpreted as “including, but not limited to.”
[0062] As used throughout, a range is used as a shorthand to describe the individual values within the range and each value. Any value within the range can be chosen as an endpoint of the range. Thus, the range 1 to 5 specifically includes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as subranges such as 2 to 5, 3 to 5, 2 to 3, 2 to 4, 1 to 4, etc.
[0063] The term “about” refers to any number within 10% of that number when referring to a number. For example, the phrase “about 2% by weight” refers to a number between 1.8% by weight and 2.2% by weight, and includes both 1.8% by weight and 2.2% by weight.
[0064] All references cited in this document are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. In the event of any conflict between the limitations set forth in this disclosure and the limitations set forth in the cited references, the limitations set forth in this disclosure shall prevail.
[0065] Unless otherwise stated, abbreviations and symbols used herein have their ordinary meanings. The abbreviation “weight%” means a percentage by weight relative to the personal care composition. The symbol “°” refers to a degree, such as a temperature or angle. The symbols “h,” “min,” “mL,” “nm,” and “μm” refer to hours, minutes, milliliters, nanometers, and micrometers, respectively. The abbreviation “UV-VIS,” referring to a spectrometer or spectroscopy, means ultraviolet-visible. The abbreviation “rpm” means revolutions per minute.
[0066] When referring to chemical structures and names, the symbols "C", "H", and "O" represent carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, respectively. The symbols "–", "=", and "≡" represent single, double, and triple bonds, respectively.
[0067] As used herein, “volatile” means having a flash point below approximately 100°C. As used herein, “non-volatile” means having a flash point above approximately 100°C.
[0068] Any member of the species list used to exemplify or define a genus may be distinct from, overlap with, be a subset of, be equivalent to, be nearly identical to, or be identical to any other member of the species list. Furthermore, unless explicitly stated otherwise, for example when enumerating the Markush groups, the list of species used to define or exemplify a genus is open-ended, and it is permissible for other species to exist that define or exemplify the genus that are exactly as good as or better than any other species listed.
[0069] The phrases “its mixture,” “its combination,” or “combination of two or more thereof” do not require that the mixture contain all of A, B, C, D, E, and F (although it may contain all of A, B, C, D, E, and F). Rather, it indicates a mixture that may contain any two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F. In other words, it is equivalent to the phrase “a mixture of one or more elements selected from A, B, C, D, E, and F, and any two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F.” Similarly, the term “its salt” also refers to “its various salts.” Therefore, when this disclosure refers to "elements selected from A, B, C, D, E, F, their salts, and mixtures thereof", it can mean one or more of A, B, C, D, and F, one or more of salts of A, B, C, D, E, and F, or a mixture of any two of salts of A, B, C, D, E, F, salts of A, B, C, D, E, and F.
[0070] All components and elements affirmatively set forth in this disclosure may be negatively excluded from the claims. In other words, the personal care compositions of this disclosure may contain no or substantially no components and elements affirmatively recited throughout this disclosure. In some cases, the personal care compositions of this disclosure may contain substantially no non-incidental amounts of the ingredients or compounds described herein. A non-incidental amount of an ingredient or compound is the amount of that ingredient or compound added alone to the personal care composition. For example, a personal care composition may contain substantially no non-incidental amounts of an ingredient or compound, although such an ingredient or compound may be present as part of raw materials included in a blend of two or more compounds.
[0071] Some of the identified different categories of components may overlap. In cases where overlap is possible and a personal care composition contains two components (or more than two overlapping components), overlapping compounds do not indicate more than one component. For example, some compounds may be called both a β-hydroxy acid and an anti-acne agent. If a particular personal care composition contains salicylic acid (which may be called both a β-hydroxy acid and an anti-acne agent), then salicylic acid will function as either a β-hydroxy acid or an anti-acne agent, not both.
[0072] For readability purposes, chemical functional groups are presented in their adjective form; for each of these adjectives, the word "group" is assumed to be used. For example, the adjective "alkyl" without a noun should be interpreted as "alkyl group".

[0107] In some embodiments, polyols and polyether derivatives may be used as solvents and / or surfactants in topical formulations. Suitable polyols and polyethers include propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, polypropylene glycol 2000 and 4000, poly(ethylene oxide-copoly-propylene oxide) glycol, glycerol, sorbitol, ethoxylated sorbitol, hydroxypropyl sorbitol, polyethylene glycol 200 to 6000, methoxy polyethylene glycol 350, 550, 750, 2000 and 5000, polyethylene oxide homopolymers (100,000 to 5,000,000), polyalkylene glycols and derivatives, hexanediol, 2-methyl-2,4-pentanediol, 1,3-butanediol, 1,2,6-hexanetriol, 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol, vicinal diols having 15 to 18 carbon atoms, and polyoxypropylene derivatives of trimethylolpropane.
[0108] In some embodiments, the solvent may increase permeability by encapsulating polar pathways and / or by fluidizing lipids. Examples include water, alcohols (e.g., methanol and ethanol); alkyl methyl sulfoxides (e.g., dimethyl sulfoxide, alkyl homologues of methyl sulfoxide, dimethylacetamide, and dimethylformamide); pyrrolidones (e.g., 2-pyrrolidone, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone); laurocapram (azone); and other solvents (e.g., propylene glycol, glycerol, organosilicon fluids, isopropyl palmitate).
[0109] In some implementations, surfactants can enhance polar pathway delivery, particularly for hydrophilic drugs. The ability of surfactants to alter permeation is a function of the polar head group and hydrocarbon chain length. Anionic surfactants include, but are not limited to, dioctyl sulfosuccinate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and decodecylmethylsulphoxide. Nonionic surfactants include, but are not limited to, Pluronic F127 and Pluronic F68. Bile salts include, but are not limited to, sodium ms taurocholate, sodium deoxycholate, and sodium tauroglycocholate. [0111] Suitable emulsifiers for topical formulations include anionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, and amphoteric surfactants. Preferred ionic emulsifiers include phospholipids, such as lecithin and its derivatives. Lecithin and other phospholipids can be used to prepare liposomes comprising peptide compositions as described herein. Lipid vesicles form when phospholipids, such as lecithin, are placed in water and subsequently, upon supplying sufficient energy, form a bilayer or a series of bilayers (separated by individual water molecules). Liposomes can be produced by sonicating phospholipids in water. Low shear rates produce multilayered liposomes. Sustained high-shear sonication tends to form smaller monolayer liposomes. Hydrophobic chemicals can dissolve into the phospholipid bilayer membrane. The lipid bilayer of liposomes delivers peptide compositions as described herein.
[0112] The personal care compositions described herein may comprise micelles, or aggregates of surfactant molecules dispersed in an aqueous solution. Micelles can be prepared by dispersing an oil solvent in an aqueous solution containing a surfactant, wherein the surfactant concentration exceeds a critical micelle concentration. The resulting formulation comprises micelles, i.e., spherical oil droplets surrounded by a film of polar surfactant molecules dispersed in an aqueous solvent.
[0113] Sterols (including, for example, cholesterol and cholesterol fatty acid esters); amides (such as fatty acid amides, ethoxylated fatty acid amides and fatty acid alkanolamides) can also be used as emollients and / or penetration enhancers.
