Description

Technical Field

[0001] This disclosure generally relates to herbicidal compositions for controlling unwanted vegetation, the herbicidal compositions comprising (a) a triazolopyrimidine herbicide and (b) a mixture thereof; and methods of using the herbicidal compositions thereof to control unwanted vegetation. Background Technology

[0002] Many recurring problems in agriculture involve controlling the growth of unwanted vegetation. If left uncontrolled, unwanted vegetation can negatively impact or inhibit the growth of desired vegetation, such as crops, lawns, pastures, gardens, and recreational area plants. To help control unwanted vegetation, researchers have developed a variety of chemicals and chemical compositions that effectively control this unwanted growth.

[0003] However, there remains a continuous need for new compositions and methods to control the growth of unwanted vegetation, including vegetation that has developed resistance or tolerance to previous herbicides. In many locations, herbicide resistance can be a significant problem because previously effective herbicides become less effective in controlling unwanted vegetation with herbicide resistance. In this disclosure, the applicant has developed weed control compositions comprising a unique combination of two or more herbicides that improve herbicide effectiveness and reduce the problem of herbicide resistance. Summary of the Invention

None of the language in this specification should be construed as indicating that any unclaimed element is necessary for the practice of this disclosure.

[0022] As used herein, the terms “herbicide,” “herbicidal active ingredient,” or “herbicidal compound” refer to an active ingredient that, when applied in appropriate amounts, kills, controls, or otherwise adversely alters the growth of vegetation, particularly undesirable vegetation such as weed species.

[0023] As used herein, the term "herbicidal effect" refers to the adverse alteration of vegetation by an active ingredient, including, for example, deviation from natural growth or development, killing, regulating, drying, growth inhibition, weakening, and delaying. The term "herbicidal activity" generally refers to the herbicidal effect of the active ingredient.

[0024] As used herein, the term "herbicide resistance" refers to the genetic ability of an individual plant to survive the application of a herbicide that would kill a normal population of the same plant species. Herbicide resistance in a plant species typically results from the application of a herbicide to that species at a specific location.

[0025] As used herein, the term "herbicide tolerance" refers to the inherent ability of a plant species to survive and reproduce after treatment with herbicides at normal application rates. Therefore, herbicide tolerance is the natural tolerance within a normal population of a plant species, rather than resistance selected in the species through herbicide application.

[0026] As used herein, "composition" means a mixture that contains at least one herbicide and other ingredients for enhancing the properties or effectiveness of the mixture in some way. Other ingredients may include, but are not limited to, diluents, surfactants, adjuvants, antifoaming agents, emulsifiers, colorants, dispersants, antifreeze agents, and other such ingredients.

[0027] As used herein, a "safety agent" is a compound that protects vegetation by preventing or reducing the weeding effects caused by herbicides applied to the vegetation. Safety agents are typically used to protect desired vegetation (e.g., crops) from the effects of applied herbicides used to control unwanted vegetation (e.g., weeds) in or around the location of the desired vegetation.

[0028] As used herein, "combination formulation" refers to an active ingredient, such as a herbicide or a safener, added to a herbicidal composition containing another active ingredient. For the purposes of this disclosure, it should be understood that a combination formulation comprises one or more active ingredients, such as a herbicide or a safener, which are added to a composition that also contains a triazolopyrimidine herbicide.

[0029] As used herein, “application” of a herbicide or herbicidal composition means the direct delivery of it to the target vegetation or its location or to an area where unwanted vegetation is to be controlled. Methods of application include, but are not limited to, contact with soil or water before emergence, contact with unwanted vegetation after emergence, or contact with an area adjacent to unwanted vegetation.

[0030] In some respects, the herbicidal composition can be applied pre-emergence by contacting the soil or water in the target area. In some respects, the herbicidal composition can be applied post-emergence by contacting unwanted vegetation or by contacting areas adjacent to unwanted vegetation. In some respects, the herbicidal composition can be applied post-emergence at different phenological developmental stages of the plant as indicated by the BBCH scale. As used herein, the term "BBCH scale" is used to identify phenological developmental stages of plants, including crop and weed species. It is a plant species-specific version of the BBCH scale. BBCH scales have been developed for a range of plant species, where similar growth stages of each plant are assigned the same code. Detailed BBCH values for phenological growth stages are shown in Table 1 below (Hess, M.; G. Barralis; H. Bleiholder; L. Buhr; Th. Eggers; H. Hack; R. Stauss (1997) "Use of the extended BBCH-scale - general for the description of the growth stages of mono- and dicotyledonous weed species" Weed Research. 36(6):433-441. doi:10.1046 / j.1365-3180.1997.d01-70.x).

[0031] Table 1. The BBCH scale indicates the phenological growth stages of weeds. Note: Plant type codes are listed below: D = dicotyledonous; G = grass; M = monocotyledonous; P = perennial; and V = developed from vegetative parts or reproductive organs. If the description applies to all plant groups, no coding letter is used.

[0032] As used herein, the term “vegetation” may include, for example, dormant seeds, germinating seeds, emerging seedlings, plants propagated from vegetative propagules, immature vegetation, mature vegetation, and grown vegetation.

[0033] As used herein, the term "crop" refers to desired vegetation, such as plants that grow to provide food, shelter, pasture, erosion control, etc. Examples of crops include wheat, cereals, rice, beans, vegetables, orchards and timber trees, grapevines, etc. Preferably, the herbicide or herbicidal composition has zero or minimal herbicidal effect on the crop.

[0034] As used herein, the term "undesirable vegetation" refers to vegetation that is not desired in a given area, such as weed species. Herbicides or herbicidal compositions are used to control undesirable vegetation. Preferably, the herbicide or herbicidal composition has a high or complete weeding effect on undesirable vegetation, such as about 95% or higher efficacy.

[0035] As used in this article, the term "site" refers to an area where vegetation or plants are growing or will grow, typically a field.

[0036] As used herein, the term "ALS inhibitor" or "ALS-inhibiting herbicide" can refer to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Examples of ALS-inhibiting herbicides include imidazolinones, sulfonylureas, sulfonylaminocarbonyltriazolinones, and triazolopyrimidine herbicides, which prevent the production of three essential branched-chain amino acids by inhibiting a key plant enzyme—acetolactate synthase (ALS enzyme). These herbicides can migrate to newly growing areas in the xylem and phloem and are absorbed through the plant's leaves and roots. Herbicides in this family vary considerably in selectivity and can control annual and perennial broadleaf or grassy weeds, and can be applied to the soil or leaves.

[0037] As used herein, the term "ALS-R" weeds can refer to weeds that have developed resistance to one or more ALS-suppressing herbicides. For example, if ALOAE (a type of wild oat) weeds are resistant or tolerant to one or more ALS-suppressing herbicides, such weeds will be referred to as ALS-R ALOAEs in this disclosure.

[0038] As used in this article, the term "ALOSS" or "ALOSS" refers to the genus name of different species of *Alopecurus aequalis*.

[0039] As used herein, the term "agriculturally acceptable salt" refers to a salt approved for agricultural use. Agriculturally acceptable salts of herbicides can be converted into the herbicide mentioned in plants, water, or soil, and can be in a dissociated or non-dissociated form (depending on pH). Exemplary agriculturally acceptable salts include, but are not limited to: cationic alkali metals or alkaline earth metals; ammonium ions; mono-, di-, tri-, or tetra-alkylammonium ions; mono-, di-, tri-, or tetra-alkylhydroxyammonium ions; and unsubstituted or substituted morpholinium ions.

[0040] As used herein, “agriculturally acceptable N-oxides” can be understood to include N-oxides that exhibit herbicidal activity or that are converted or can be converted into a reference herbicide in plants, water, or soil.

[0041] As used herein, the term "agriculturally acceptable ester" can refer to an ester that exhibits herbicidal activity or is converted or can be converted into a reference herbicide in plants, water, or soil. Exemplary agriculturally acceptable esters are, for example, those that are hydrolyzed, oxidized, metabolized, or otherwise converted into the corresponding carboxylic acid in plants, water, or soil, or those that can be hydrolyzed, oxidized, metabolized, or otherwise converted into the corresponding carboxylic acid, and which, depending on pH, can be in a dissociated or non-dissociated form.

[0042] As used herein, “active ingredient” or “ai” refers to a compound or composition that has an effect on vegetation (e.g., a herbicidal or safety effect on vegetation). The term “active ingredient” or “ai” may also be used in expressions relating to concentration or application rate, such as “grams of active ingredient per hectare” or “g ai / ha”, to clarify that the amount of the ingredient is measured as is by the compound, including salts, esters, N-oxides, hydrates, etc.

[0043] As used herein, “acid equivalent” or “ae” refers to the amount of the acid form of the active ingredient calculated from the amount of the salt or ester form of the active ingredient. For example, if the acid form of active ingredient “Z” has a molecular weight of 120 Daltons and the salt form of Z has a molecular weight of 150 Daltons, then applying 75 grams of active ingredient per hectare (g ai / ha) of the salt of Z will be equivalent to applying 60 grams of acid equivalent per hectare (g ae / ha) of the acid form of Z. 75g ai / ha Z salt * (120Da Z acid / 150Da Z salt) = 60g ae / ha Z acid. The terms “acid equivalent” or “ae” can also be used in expressions relating to concentration or application rate, such as “gram acid equivalent per hectare” or “g ae / ha”, to clarify that the amount of the component is measured in the acid form of the compound, corrected to eliminate the mass contribution of associated salts, esters, N-oxides, hydrates, etc.

[0065] The herbicidal compositions disclosed herein can be applied using any known herbicide application technique. Exemplary application techniques include, but are not limited to, spraying, atomizing, dusting, sprinkling, broadcasting, or direct application of the herbicidal compositions. Application methods may vary depending on the intended purpose. In some respects, the application method may be selected to ensure the optimal possible distribution of the compositions disclosed herein.

[0066] In some respects, this document discloses a method for controlling unwanted vegetation, the method comprising contacting the unwanted vegetation or its location with any composition or applying any composition to soil or water to prevent the germination or growth of the unwanted vegetation.

[0067] The herbicidal compositions disclosed herein can be applied pre-emergence (before the emergence of unwanted vegetation) or post-emergence (e.g., during and / or after the emergence of unwanted vegetation). In some aspects, the herbicidal compositions are applied to unwanted vegetation post-emergence.

[0068] When the herbicidal composition is used on crops, it can be applied after sowing and before or after crop emergence. In some aspects, the herbicidal compositions disclosed herein exhibit good crop tolerance even when crops have already emerged and can be applied during or after crop emergence. In some aspects, when said composition is used on crops, it can be applied before crop sowing.

[0069] A particular advantage of the herbicidal compositions disclosed herein lies in their excellent post-emergence herbicidal activity, meaning they exhibit good herbicidal activity against emerging unwanted vegetation. In some respects, the compositions are applied after the emergence of unwanted vegetation, i.e., during and / or after the emergence of unwanted vegetation. Post-emergence application of the herbicidal compositions disclosed herein is particularly advantageous when unwanted vegetation is in the process of leaf development from leaf development to flowering. Because the compositions exhibit good crop tolerance, they can be applied after crop sowing, and especially during or after crop emergence, even when the crop has already emerged.

[0070] In some respects, the herbicidal composition can be applied after emergence at different phenological developmental stages of the plant, as indicated by the BBCH scale shown in Table 1. For example, the herbicidal composition can be applied after emergence at the weed growth stages of BBCH 0-89, BBCH 1-79, BBCH 3-69, BBCH 5-59, BBCH 6-49, BBCH 6-49, BBCH 6-39, BBCH 7-29, BBCH 8-23, BBCH 9-22, BBCH 10-19, BBCH 10-15, BBCH 10-13, or BBCH 11-12. Preferably, the herbicidal composition is applied after emergence at the weed growth stages of BBCH 9-19, BBCH 10-15, BBCH 10-13, or BBCH 11-12.

[0071] In some respects, the triazolopyrimidine herbicide and the second herbicide in the herbicidal composition of this disclosure, as well as optional additional active ingredients (safeners and other optional herbicides), can be applied simultaneously or sequentially.

[0072] In some aspects, the herbicidal compositions disclosed herein are applied by spraying (e.g., foliar spraying) to unwanted vegetation or areas adjacent to unwanted vegetation, or to soil or water, to prevent the emergence or growth of unwanted vegetation. In some aspects, the compositions disclosed herein are applied by low-volume or ultra-low-volume methods, wherein the application is in the form of microparticles. In some aspects, where certain crop plants are not very tolerant of the herbicidal compositions disclosed herein, the compositions can be applied by means of spraying equipment in a manner that allows them to reach the leaves of unwanted vegetation growing in the bottom or bare soil with minimal contact (if any) with the leaves of the sensitive crop plants (e.g., post-directed or lay-by). In some respects, the compositions disclosed herein can be applied as dry compositions (e.g., granules, powders, or powders).

[0073] In some respects, where unwanted vegetation is treated post-emergence, the compositions disclosed herein are applied via foliar application. In other respects, the compounds of the mixture exhibit herbicidal activity when applied directly to plants or the site of plants at any stage of growth or before planting or emergence. The observed effects may depend on the type of unwanted vegetation to be controlled, the growth stage of the unwanted vegetation, application parameters such as dilution and spray droplet size, particle size of the solid components, environmental conditions at the time of application, the specific compound used, the specific adjuvants and carriers used, soil type, etc., and the amount of chemical applied. In some respects, these and other factors can be modulated to promote non-selective or selective herbicidal action.

[0083] The herbicidal compositions described herein can be used to control undesirable vegetation, such as herbicide-resistant or tolerant weeds, that are resistant to or tolerant of herbicides. Methods using the herbicidal compositions described herein can also be used to control undesirable vegetation, such as herbicide-resistant or tolerant weeds, that are resistant to or tolerant of herbicides.

[0084] In some respects, undesirable vegetation can include undesirable vegetation that has developed resistance or tolerance to certain herbicides (herbicide-resistant or tolerant weeds).

[0085] In many locations, herbicide resistance can be a significant problem because previously effective herbicides become less effective at controlling unwanted vegetation with herbicide resistance. Any weed population may contain or develop natural resistance to a particular herbicide and other herbicides with the same mode of action (MoA). If these herbicides are used repeatedly in the same field, the resistant biotype may dominate the weed population. Appropriate resistance management strategies should be followed. To delay herbicide resistance, farmers can rotate the use of herbicides from the same group (with the same MoA) within the growing season sequence or use different herbicide groups (with different MoA) between growing seasons to control the same weeds in the field. Farmers can also incorporate crop rotation strategies to rotate crops in the same field between growing seasons, where different herbicide groups (with different MoA) can be used to control and rotate crops. However, even with the use of herbicides with different modes of action (MoA) and / or repeated crop rotation within a growing season sequence or between multiple growing seasons in the same field, weeds with herbicide resistance or tolerance may still emerge.

[0086] In this disclosure, the applicant has developed a herbicidal composition comprising a unique combination of two or more herbicides, which improves herbicide efficacy and reduces the problem of herbicide resistance. The combined use of two or more herbicides can effectively control undesirable vegetation resistant or tolerant to certain herbicides, particularly if the herbicides in the composition have different modes of action in the vegetation. In some aspects, one herbicide may be a herbicide typically used post-emergence; and the other herbicide may be a herbicide typically used pre-emergence. In some aspects, both herbicides may be herbicides typically used post-emergence. In some aspects, both herbicides may be herbicides typically used pre-emergence. The applicants have unexpectedly discovered that the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure, comprising a unique combination of two or more herbicides with different modes of action, can effectively control undesirable vegetation, wherein the herbicidal efficacy is equal to or greater than 95%; can reduce the problem of herbicide resistance in a particular field; and can further maintain crop safety.

[0087] The applicant has unexpectedly discovered that the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure are effective in controlling certain weeds, as well as some herbicide-resistant or tolerant weeds. Furthermore, the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure exhibit good crop safety for both the crop and the rotating crop when farmers rotate crops in the same field between growing seasons.

[0088] The herbicidal compositions described herein can be used to control herbicide-resistant or tolerant weeds. Methods using the compositions described herein can also be used to control herbicide-resistant or tolerant weeds.

Such tolerant crops may possess single, multiple, or additive traits that confer tolerance to single or multiple chemicals and / or multiple modes of action. These compositions and methods can be used to control unwanted vegetation in crops that exhibit agronomic stress tolerance (including but not limited to drought, cold, high temperature, salinity, water, nutrients, fertility, pH), pest tolerance (including but not limited to insects, fungi, and pathogens), and crop-modifying traits (including but not limited to yield, protein, carbohydrate, or oil content; protein, carbohydrate, or oil composition; plant height, and plant structure).

[0091] In some aspects, undesirable vegetation may include weeds that have developed resistance or tolerance to certain herbicides, including acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitory herbicides, following repeated application. Exemplary resistant or tolerant weeds include, but are not limited to, biotypes resistant or tolerant to acetolactate synthase (ALS) or acetylhydroxy acid synthase (AHAS) inhibitors (e.g., imidazolinones, sulfonylureas, pyrimidinyl thiobenzoates, triazolopyrimidines, sulfonylaminocarbonyltriazolinones). In some aspects, ALS inhibitory herbicides may include imidazolinones, sulfonylureas, sulfonylaminocarbonyltriazolinones, and triazolopyrimidine herbicides, which prevent the production of three essential branched-chain amino acids by inhibiting a key plant enzyme—acetolactate synthase (ALS enzyme). These herbicides can move into newly growing areas in the xylem and phloem and are absorbed through the plant's leaves and roots. Herbicides within these families vary considerably in selectivity and can control annual and perennial broadleaf or grassy weeds, and can be applied to the soil or leaves. In some respects, ALS-suppressing herbicides can include triazolidine herbicides. In some respects, undesirable vegetation can include biotypes of weeds that are resistant or tolerant to ALS-suppressing herbicides (ALS-R). In some respects, undesirable vegetation includes or is ALS-R weeds.

In some respects, undesirable vegetation includes ALS-R weeds. In some respects, undesirable vegetation includes triazolopyrimidine-resistant or tolerant weeds. In some respects, undesirable vegetation is sulfadiazon-resistant or tolerant weeds.

[0093] In some aspects, undesirable vegetation may include one or more of the following: SCMKE (Gun's hardgrass), ALOMY (large spikenard), BECSY (Beckmannia syzigachne / sloughgrass), ALOAE (alopecuroides), ALOSS (alopecuroides), BROJA (bromegrass), and LOLMU (flora ryegrass). In some aspects, undesirable vegetation may include one or more of the following: SCMKE, ALOMY, BECSY, and ALOAE. In some aspects, undesirable vegetation may include one or more of the following: ALS-R SCMKE, ALS-R ALOMY, ALS-RBECSY, and ALS-R ALOAE weeds. In some respects, undesirable vegetation may include ALS-R SCMKE weeds that have developed resistance to ALS-suppressing herbicides such as acesulfame K. In some respects, undesirable vegetation may include ALS-R ALOMY weeds that have developed resistance to ALS-suppressing herbicides such as acesulfame K. In some respects, undesirable vegetation may include ALS-R BECSY weeds that have developed resistance to ALS-suppressing herbicides such as acesulfame K. In some respects, undesirable vegetation may include ALOAE weeds that have developed resistance to ALS-suppressing herbicides such as acesulfame K.

[0094] To delay herbicide resistance, farmers can choose to rotate crops or herbicides in the same field between growing seasons. For example, a farmer can use a herbicide in one growing season and then use a different herbicide with a different MoA (MoAs) for the field crop in another growing season. Farmers can also plant a crop (e.g., winter wheat) in the field in one growing season and use a herbicide with a certain MoA for the crop, and then grow a rotation crop (e.g., rice, corn, or soybean) in the same field in another growing season and use a different herbicide with a different MoA. Even with rotation of herbicides and / or crops, farmers have observed that weeds gradually develop herbicide resistance or tolerance with repeated crop and herbicide rotations. The applicant has unexpectedly discovered that the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure can effectively control weeds or herbicide-resistant or tolerant weeds in field crops, while achieving good crop safety for both the crop (e.g., winter wheat) and the rotation crop (e.g., rice, corn, or soybean) when farmers rotate crops and herbicides in the same field.

In some aspects, the weight ratio of the triazolopyrimidine herbicide to the second herbicide is from about 1:100 to about 5:1, or from about 1:30 to about 1:1.

[0097] The application rate of a composition of pure active compounds (i.e., triazolopyrimidine herbicides, secondary herbicides, and optionally safeners or other optional herbicides) depends on the density of the unwanted vegetation, the developmental stage of the plants, the climatic conditions of the location where the composition is applied, and the method of application. Typically, the application rate of the herbicidal composition (the total amount of triazolopyrimidine herbicides, secondary herbicides, and optionally additional active ingredients) is 0.1 to 5000 g ai / ha, preferably 1 to 500 g ai / ha of active substance.

[0098] In some respects, the required application rate of triazolopyrimidine herbicides (such as pyrazosulfuron) is in the range of 0.1 g ai / ha to 500 g ai / ha, and preferably in the ranges of 1 g ai / ha to 400 g ai / ha, 2 g ai / ha to 300 g ai / ha, 4 g ai / ha to 200 g ai / ha, 5 g ai / ha to 100 g ai / ha, 6 g ai / ha to 80 g ai / ha, 7 g ai / ha to 60 g ai / ha, 8 g ai / ha to 50 g ai / ha, 9 g ai / ha to 40 g ai / ha, 10 g ai / ha to 30 g ai / ha, 10 g ai / ha to 20 g ai / ha, 11 g ai / ha to 25 g ai / ha, 12 g ai / ha to 20 g ai / ha, and 12 g ai / ha to 15 g ai / ha. ai / ha, or within the range of 5g ai / ha to 30g ai / ha.

[0099] In some respects, the required application rate of the second herbicide (such as sulfanilamide) is in the range of 0.1 g ai / ha to 1000 g ai / ha, and preferably in the range of 0.5 g ai / ha to 500 g ai / ha, 1 g ai / ha to 450 g ai / ha, 5 g ai / ha to 400 g ai / ha, 10 g ai / ha to 350 g ai / ha, 15 g ai / ha to 300 g ai / ha, 20 g ai / ha to 300 g ai / ha, 22 g ai / ha to 280 g ai / ha, 25 g ai / ha to 250 g ai / ha, 26 g ai / ha to 240 g ai / ha, 27 g ai / ha to 230 g ai / ha, 28 g ai / ha to 220 g ai / ha, and 29 g ai / ha to 210 g ai / ha. The range is: ai / ha, 30g ai / ha to 200g ai / ha, 30g ai / ha to 180g ai / ha, 35g ai / ha to 160g ai / ha, 40g ai / ha to 140g ai / ha, 50g ai / ha to 130g ai / ha, 60g ai / ha to 120g ai / ha, or 20g ai / ha to 200g ai / ha.

[0100] The required application rate of the safety agent (if applied) is generally in the range of 0.1 g ai / ha to 5000 g ai / ha, and preferably in the range of 2 g ai / ha to 1000 g ai / ha or 5 g ai / ha to 500 g ai / ha. It is preferable not to apply the safety agent or to apply almost no safety agent, and therefore the application rate is less than 5 g ai / ha, particularly less than 2 g ai / ha, less than 2 g ai / ha, or less than 0.1 g ai / ha.

[0101] Surprisingly, the applicants have discovered that the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure exhibit better herbicidal activity against unwanted vegetation than the additive herbicidal activity of the individual compounds would have expected. In other words, the combined action of the triazolopyrimidine herbicide and the second herbicide produces unexpectedly enhanced herbicidal activity against unwanted vegetation compared to the additive herbicidal activity of the individual herbicides at the corresponding application rates and conditions. The applicants have further discovered that the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure exhibit good crop compatibility. Compared to at least one of the individual herbicides alone at the corresponding application rates and conditions, the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure result in reduced damage to crop plants. The herbicidal compositions of this disclosure cause less than about 30%, less than about 25%, less than about 20%, less than about 15%, less than about 10%, less than about 9%, less than about 8%, less than about 7%, less than about 6%, less than about 5%, less than about 4%, less than about 3%, less than about 2%, or less than about 1% of observed or unobserved damage to crops, as well as to rotating crops (if crop rotation is used between growing seasons). Therefore, the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure exhibit enhanced efficacy and improved crop safety in controlling unwanted vegetation.

[0111] In some respects, the weight ratio of the triazolopyrimidine herbicide to the second herbicide is about 500:1 to about 1:500, or about 1:500 to about 100:1, or about 1:500 to about 10:1, or about 1:100 to about 5:1, or about 1:100 to about 1:1, or about 1:50 to about 2:1, or about 1:40 to about 1:1, or about 1:30 to about 1:1, or about 1:30 to about 1:5, or about 1:20 to about 1:2, or about 1:18 to about 1:2, or about 1:15 to about 1:2, or about 1:15 to about 1:3, or about 1:15 to about 1:4, or about 1:15 to about 1:5.

[0112] In some respects, the mixture is a safener. In some respects, the herbicidal composition comprises a triazolopyrimidine herbicide and a safener. A safener is a compound that results in better crop compatibility when applied in combination with a herbicide. In some respects, the safener itself has herbicidal activity. In some respects, the safener acts as an antidote or antagonist in the crop plant and thus can reduce or even prevent additional damage to the crop plant that might occur due to the applied herbicide (protecting the crop plant from damage). Exemplary safeners include, but are not limited to, AD-67 (MON). 4660)(4-(dichloroacetyl)-1-oxa-4-azaspiro[4.5]decane[CAS No. 71526-07-03]), chlorpyrifos, chlordane, blasinolone, quinoxyacetic acid, chlorpyrifos, chlorpyrifos nitrile, cyclopropanesulfonamide, chlorpyrifos, dichloropropeneamine, dicyclohexane, phosmet, chlorpyrifos, chlorpyrifos-ethyl, chlorpyrifos-ethyl, chlorpyrifos-ethyl, fluroxypyr, chlorpyrifos-oxazol, hypersensitive protein, bis(phenyloxazolyl)-ethyl, chlorpyrifos-ethyl, chlorpyrifos-ethyl Pyrazolium oxalate, pyrazolium oxalate-diethyl, toluene, naphthalenecarboxylic anhydride, 2,2,5-trimethyl-3-(dichloroacetyl)-1,3-oxazolidine (also known as R29148 [CAS No. 52836-31-4]), 4-(dichloroacetyl)-1-oxa-4-azaspiro[4.5]decane, oxaloacetamide, and N-phenyl-sulfonylbenzoic acid amide, as well as their agriculturally acceptable salts and their agriculturally acceptable derivatives (provided they have a carboxyl group). In some aspects, the safener may include allyl oxalamide.

[0113] In the herbicidal compositions disclosed herein, the relative weight ratio (in g ai / ha) of the triazolopyrimidine herbicide to the safener or its agriculturally acceptable salt or ester may be in the range of about 1:500 to about 500:1, about 1:250 to about 250:1, about 100:1 to about 1:100.In some respects, the weight ratio of triazolopyrimidine herbicide (in g ai / ha) to a safener or its agriculturally acceptable salt or ester (in g ai / ha) can be 1:5 or greater, such as 1:4.75 or greater, 1:4.5 or greater, 1:4.25 or greater, 1:4 or greater, 1:3.75 or greater, 1:3.5 or greater, 1:3.25 or greater, 1:3 or greater, 1:2.75 or greater, 1:2.5 or greater, 1:2.25 or greater, 1:2 or greater, 1:1.9 or greater, 1:1.8 or greater, 1:1.7 or greater, 1:1.6 or greater, 1:1.5 or greater, 1:1.4 or greater, 1:1.3 or greater, 1:1.2 or greater, 1:1.1 or greater, 1:1 or greater, 1.1:1 or greater, 1.2:1 Or greater, 1.3:1 or greater, 1.4:1 or greater, 1.5:1 or greater, 1.6:1 or greater, 1.7:1 or greater, 1.8:1 or greater, 1.9:1 or greater, 2:1 or greater, 2.25:1 or greater, 2.5:1 or greater, 2.75:1 or greater, 3:1 or greater, 3.25:1 or greater, 3.5:1 or greater, 3.75:1 or greater, 4:1 or greater, 4.25:1 or greater, 4.5:1 or greater, 4.75:1 or greater, or 5:1 or greater; the weight ratio of (a) to (b) may be 5:1 or less, such as 4.75:1 or less, 4.5:1 or less, 4.25:1 or less. 4:1 or less, 3.75:1 or less, 3.5:1 or less, 3.25:1 or less, 3:1 or less, 2.75:1 or less, 2.5:1 or less, 2.25:1 or less, 2:1 or less, 1.9:1 or less, 1.8:1 or less, 1.7:1 or less, 1.6:1 or less, 1.5:1 or less, 1.4:1 or less, 1.3:1 or less, 1.2:1 or less, 1.1:1 or less, 1:1 or less, 1:1.1 or less, 1:1.2 or less, 1:1.3 or less, 1:1.4 or less, 1:1.5 or less, 1:1.6 or less, 1:1.7 or less, 1: The weight ratio of triazolopyrimidine herbicide to safener or its agriculturally acceptable salt or ester may be any of the minimum to maximum ratios provided above, such as 1:5 to 5:1, 1:2 to 5:1, 1:1 to 3:1, 1:3 to 4:1, or 1:1.5 to 3:1.

[0114] In some respects, the mixture may include the respective safener and second herbicide disclosed above.

[0115] In some respects, safeners are generally not required in the herbicidal compositions disclosed herein. In some embodiments, the herbicidal compositions contain no or very little safener (i.e., less than 1% by weight based on the total amount of herbicides present in the herbicidal composition comprising a triazolopyrimidine herbicide and / or a second herbicide).

[0116] In some aspects, when the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure, containing a unique combination of a triazolopyrimidine herbicide (e.g., sulfadiazine) and a second herbicide (e.g., sulforaphane), are applied post-emergence to unwanted vegetation, at least 70%, 75%, 80%, 85%, 90%, 91%, 92%, 93%, 94%, 95%, 96%, 97%, 98%, 99%, 99.5%, or even 100% herbicidal efficacy in controlling certain types of unwanted vegetation can be achieved. In some aspects, the herbicidal compositions may not contain any safener. In some aspects, the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure contain a unique combination of sulfadiazine and sulforaphane without any added safener. The applicant has unexpectedly discovered that, even without any added safener, these herbicidal compositions of this disclosure can achieve good crop safety with no or minimal crop damage, such as less than about 30%, less than about 25%, less than about 20%, less than about 15%, less than about 10%, less than about 9%, less than about 8%, less than about 7%, less than about 6%, less than about 5%, less than about 4%, less than about 3%, less than about 2%, or less than about 1% of observed or unobserved damage to the desired crop (e.g., winter wheat). This result achieved in this disclosure is particularly unexpected, given that sulforaphane is a well-known pre-emergence herbicide that inhibits the production of very long-chain fatty acids in plants. The herbicidal composition of this disclosure, when applied post-emergence to a pre-emergence herbicide containing triazolopyrimidine herbicides (such as sulfadiazine) and sulforaphane, can unexpectedly achieve enhanced herbicidal efficacy than the combined effect of the individual triazolopyrimidine herbicides (such as sulfadiazine) and sulforaphane under the same corresponding application rates and conditions.

[0117] The applicant further evaluated the potential residual effects of the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure on the rotational crop in the next growing season after application of the herbicidal composition to the desired crop in the previous growing season. The applicant unexpectedly observed that when the crop (e.g., winter wheat) is switched to the rotational crop (e.g., rice or maize), the residues (if any herbicidal composition from the previous growing season) cause minimal to no damage to the rotational crop in the next growing season, such as less than about 30%, less than about 25%, less than about 20%, less than about 15%, less than about 10%, less than about 9%, less than about 8%, less than about 7%, less than about 6%, less than about 5%, less than about 4%, less than about 3%, less than about 2%, or less than about 1% of observed or unobserved damage to the rotational crop (e.g., rice or maize).

[0118] In some respects, the herbicidal composition may further contain agriculturally acceptable adjuvants or carriers.

If the composition contains one or more additional active ingredients, such as surfactants or spreaders, the composition may also be in the form of three- or four-package formulations.

[0146] Examples of some aspects of this disclosure are given below by way of non-limitation. Unless otherwise specified, parts and percentages are on a per-weight basis. Example

[0147] In the following examples, the inhibitory effect of the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure on the growth of certain undesirable vegetation and their compatibility with desired crops have been evaluated, and further compared with the effects of individual herbicidal active compounds.

[0148] Specifically, a series of field trials have been conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the herbicidal compositions disclosed herein against major weed species in winter wheat in different fields (hereinafter referred to as fields I, II, III, IV, V, VI, and VII for convenience).

[0149] The main weed species tested in the study included SCMKE (Geng's hardgrass), ALOMY (large spike alopecuroides), BECSY (alopecuroides), ALOAE (alopecuroides), ALOSS (alopecuroides), BROJA (bromegrass), and LOLMU (flora ryegrass). When first applied to the listed fields, sulfadiazine was observed to be an effective herbicide against those weeds, achieving a herbicidal efficacy of over 95% at a post-emergence application rate of approximately 10–20 g ai / ha. However, after several years of repeated field application of ALS-suppressing herbicides (such as acesulfame K), some of these weeds in the test fields were observed to have developed resistance or tolerance to ALS-suppressing herbicides (such as acesulfame K), as shown in Tables 4-10, exhibiting approximately 5%-72.1% herbicidal efficacy as measured 120 days after post-emergence application at application rates of 10.125-16.875 g ai / ha. Weeds exhibiting resistance or tolerance to ALS-suppressing herbicides (such as acesulfame K) with less than 50% efficacy at the tested acesulfame K application rates are likely or suspected to be ALS-resistant or tolerant weeds (hereinafter referred to as ALS-R weeds or suspected ALR-R weeds in this disclosure). For all tests, the herbicidal compositions were applied post-emergence at the early application window of BBCH 11-12 for the weeds. Information on the target weeds, fields, and application stages for different field trials is detailed in Table 2 below.

[0151] The herbicidal efficacy of the test and control herbicidal compositions against different target weeds was evaluated by visual assessment, weed count, and fresh weight of SCMKE weeds at 30 and 120 days after application of each composition. The visual assessment criteria for herbicidal efficacy against unwanted vegetation are detailed in Table 3 below. Details of the test methods and results are illustrated in the following examples.

[0152] Table 3. Visual evaluation criteria for weed control efficacy

[0153] Example 1

[0154] In this study, field trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of herbicidal compositions containing sulfadiazine and sulforaphane at different application rates and concentrations against the unwanted SCMKE (Geng's hard grass) vegetation in winter wheat. First, sulfadiazine and sulforaphane were tank-mixed at different ratios to form herbicidal compositions as a suspension concentrate (containing a small amount of water) or water-dispersible granules, as detailed in Table 4 below. Subsequently, the mixtures were diluted with water at weight ratios of 1:1120–1:3250 (based on the total weight of the mixture of sulfadiazine and sulforaphane to the weight of water) to form ready-to-use test compositions, Test Compositions 1–6 (listed as Test 1–6 in Table 4). Similarly, compositions containing sulfadiazine alone and sulforaphane alone were prepared to form Control Compositions 1–5 (listed as Control 1–5 in Table 4). The silicone spreader, SILWET 806 (siloxane-polyepoxy copolymer and polyepoxy) (Momentive Advanced Materials, New York, Waterford, 260 Hudson River Road, 12188), was added to test compositions 1–6 and control compositions 1–3, respectively, at a rate of 0.1% v / v based on the total volume of the compositions. The test compositions were allowed to stabilize for at least 72 days. The test and control compositions were then applied (by spray) to SCMKE weeds at BBCH 11–12 stages after emergence. The application rate of the ready-to-use compositions was 225 L / ha. The application rate of sulfadiazine was controlled at approximately 10.125–16.875 g ai / ha; and the application rate of sulfadiazine was controlled at approximately 120–180 g ai / ha, as detailed in Table 4. The detailed formulations and herbicidal efficacy of the tested and control compositions against SCMKE (Geng's hard grass) in field trials are shown in Table 4 below.

[0155] The field trial results in Table 4 show that the control composition 6, containing only acesulfame K, exhibited low herbicidal efficacy of approximately 45% to 72.1% in controlling SCMKE weeds at application rates of 10.125–16.876 g ai / ha. Acetylsulfame K is an acetyllactate synthase (ALS) inhibitory herbicide introduced around 2009. Past observations have shown that acesulfame K is an effective herbicide in controlling weeds such as ALOMY, ALOAE, SCMKE, BECSY, BROJA, and LOLMU, with herbicidal efficacy equal to or greater than 95% at similar application rates and conditions. The field trial results in Table 4 indicate that the SCMKE weeds in the test fields of this invention have developed resistance or tolerance to the ALS-inhibiting herbicide acesulfame K, and are suspected to be ALS-R SCMKE.

[0156] The applicants have developed the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure comprising a unique combination of sulfadiazine and the pre-emergence herbicide sulforaphane to control SCMKE weeds that have developed resistance or tolerance to ALS-suppressing herbicides (such as sulfadiazine) in test fields. The field trial results in Table 4 clearly demonstrate that each of the test compositions 1-6 containing a mixture of sulfadiazine at an application rate of 10.125-16.875 g ai / ha and sulforaphane at an application rate of 120-180 g ai / ha, as measured by visual assessment, weed count, and weighing of the fresh weight of SCMKE weeds at the corresponding application rates, provided significantly better control of SCMKE weeds than each of the individual control compositions 1-3 of sulfadiazine alone at the corresponding application rates, and also the individual control compositions 4-5 of sulforaphane alone.

[0157] The applicant further and unexpectedly discovered that, as measured by visual assessment, weed count, and weighing of the fresh weight of SCMKE weeds at 120 days after post-emergence application, each of the test compositions 1-3 containing a mixture of 10.125-16.875 g ai / ha of sulforaphane and 120 g ai / ha of sulforaphane unexpectedly achieved better herbicidal efficacy in controlling SCMKE (Geng's hard grass) and suspected ALS-SCMKE weeds than the sum of sulforaphane and sulforaphane alone at the corresponding application rates.

[0158] Furthermore, 120 days after post-emergence application of the test composition, no observable crop response or damage was observed in winter wheat. This indicates that the herbicidal composition of this disclosure has good crop safety. Following the trial, crop rotation was conducted to evaluate whether the test composition had any residual effect on the desired rotation crop in the next growing season immediately following the trial. Rice was planted in the next growing season after the trial. No observable crop response or damage was observed in the rice. This indicates that the herbicidal composition of this disclosure will not cause any observable crop damage to rice in the next growing season following the trial.

[0159] Example 2

[0160] In this study, field trials were conducted to evaluate the herbicidal efficacy of herbicidal compositions containing sulfadiazine and sulfosulfuron at different application rates and concentrations against the undesirable plant ALOMY (large-spike wild oats) in winter wheat. First, sulfadiazine and sulfosulfuron were barrel-mixed to form herbicidal compositions as a suspension concentrate (containing a small amount of water) or water-dispersible granules, as detailed in Table 5 below. Subsequently, the mixture was diluted with water at weight ratios of 1:1120–1:3250 (based on the total weight of the mixture of sulfadiazine and sulfosulfuron to the weight of water) to form ready-to-use test compositions, Test Compositions 7–10 (listed as Test 7–10 in Table 5). Similarly, compositions containing sulfadiazine alone and sulfosulfuron alone were prepared to form Control Compositions 6–10 (listed as Control 6–10 in Table 5). The organosilicone spreader, SILWET 806 (siloxane-polyepoxy copolymer and polyepoxy), was added to each of test compositions 7-10 and control composition 6 at a rate of 0.1% v / v based on the total volume of the compositions. The test and control herbicides were then applied (by spraying) to ALOMY after emergence at the BBCH 11-12 stage of weed growth. The application rate for each ready-to-use composition was approximately 225 L / ha. The application rate of sulfadiazine was controlled at approximately 13.5 g ai / ha; and the application rate of sulfadiazine was controlled at approximately 60-180 g ai / ha, as detailed in Table 5. The herbicidal efficacy of the test and control compositions on ALOMY was then evaluated by visual assessment, weed count, and weighing of the fresh weight of weeds in ALOMY at 30 and 120 days after application, respectively. The detailed formulations and field efficacy of the test and control herbicides against ALOMY are shown in Table 5 below.

[0161] The results shown in Table 5 indicate that ALOMY weeds in the test fields during the current trial period have developed resistance or tolerance to the ALS-suppressing herbicide sulfadiazine, exhibiting very low herbicidal efficacy of 16.8% to 43.3% as measured at both 30 and 120 days after application of control composition 6 of sulfadiazine alone at 13.5 g ai / ha to ALOMY weeds in BBCH 11-12. As noted above in Example 1, sulfadiazine was an effective herbicide for controlling ALOMY in the same test fields in the past. The field trial results in Table 5 indicate that ALOMY weeds in these fields have developed resistance or tolerance to ALS-suppressing herbicides such as sulfadiazine. The ALOMY weeds in the test fields are suspected to be ALS-R ALOMY weeds.

[0162] The field trial results in Table 5 clearly demonstrate that, as measured 120 days after application to ALOMY weeds at BBCH stage 11–12, the test herbicidal composition containing a mixture of 13.5 g ai / ha of sulfadiazine plus 60–120 g ai / ha of sulfadiazine provided significantly better control of ALOMY (large spike clover) than either sulfadiazine alone or sulfadiazine alone at the corresponding application rates.

[0163] Furthermore, no crop response was observed in winter wheat 120 days after post-emergence application of the test composition. This indicates that the herbicidal composition of this disclosure has good crop safety. Following the trial, crop rotation was conducted to evaluate whether the test composition had any residual effect on the desired rotation crop in the next growing season immediately following the trial. Maize was planted immediately in the next growing season following the trial. No observable crop response or damage was observed in maize. This indicates that the herbicidal composition of this disclosure will not cause any observable crop damage to maize in the next growing season immediately following the trial.

[0164] The applicant further and unexpectedly discovered that each of the test compositions 7-8, containing a mixture of 13.5 g ai / ha of sulfadiazine and low application rates of 60 and 90 g ai / ha of sulforaphane, as measured by visual assessment, weed count, and weighing of fresh ALOMY weeds at 120 days after post-emergence application, unexpectedly achieved better herbicidal efficacy in controlling ALOMY (Oryza sativa) and suspected ALS-R ALOMY weeds than the sum of sulfadiazine and sulforaphane alone at the corresponding application rates.

[0165] Example 3

[0166] In this study, field trials were conducted to evaluate the herbicidal efficacy of test herbicides containing mixtures of sulfadiazine and sulforaphane at different application rates and concentrations against the unwanted vegetation *Bechys edulis* in winter wheat. At the BBCH 11-12 stage of the weeds, test compositions 7-10 and control compositions 6-10 prepared in Example 2 were applied post-emergence (by spraying) to *Bechys edulis* at different combinations of application rates of 13.5 g ai / ha of sulfadiazine and 60-180 g ai / ha of sulforaphane. The herbicidal efficacy of the test and control compositions against *Bechys edulis* was then evaluated at 30 and 120 days after application by visual assessment, weed count, and weighing of the fresh weight of the *Bechys edulis* weeds. Detailed formulations and efficacy of the test and control herbicides against *Bechys edulis* in the field trials are shown in Table 6 below.

[0167] Field trial results showed that the control composition 6, containing only acesulfame K, exhibited low herbicidal efficacy of approximately 15% to 74.1% in controlling Becsy weeds at application rates of 10.125–16.876 g ai / ha. As noted above, acesulfame K is an effective herbicide in controlling Becsy weeds (with efficacy equal to or greater than 95% at similar application rates and conditions). Data indicate that Becsy weeds in the test fields of this invention have developed resistance or tolerance to ALS-suppressing herbicides such as acesulfame K. The Becsy weeds in the test fields are suspected to be ALS-RBECSY.

[0168] The field trial results in Table 6 clearly demonstrate that, 30 days after application at the BBCH 11-12 stage to BECSY and suspected ALS-R BECSY weeds, test compositions 7-10, containing a mixture of 13.5 g ai / ha of sulfadiazine plus 60-180 g ai / ha of sulforaphane, provided significantly better control of BECSY (Beckmannia syzigachne / sloughgrass) than either sulfadiazine alone or sulforaphane alone at the corresponding application rates. Furthermore, no crop response was observed in winter wheat 120 days after post-emergence application. This indicates that the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure have good crop safety. The applicant further and unexpectedly discovered that, as measured by visual evaluation at 30 and 120 days after post-emergence application, test compositions 7-8 containing a mixture of sulforaphane and roxaflutole unexpectedly achieved better herbicidal efficacy in controlling Becsy or suspected ALS-R Becsy weeds than the sum of sulforaphane and roxaflutole alone at the corresponding application rates.

[0169] Example 4

[0170] In this study, two field trials were conducted to evaluate the herbicidal efficacy of test compositions containing mixtures of sulfadiazine and sulforaphane at different application rates and concentrations against the unwanted vegetation ALOAE (alopecuroides oleracea) in two different winter wheat fields (Fields IV and V). At the BBCH 11-12 stage of weed growth, test compositions 7-10 and control compositions 6-10 prepared in Example 2 were applied (by spraying) to the ALOAE after emergence at different combinations of application rates of 13.5 g ai / ha of sulfadiazine and 60-180 g ai / ha of sulforaphane. The herbicidal efficacy of the test and control compositions against ALOAE was then evaluated at 30 and 120 days after application by visual assessment, weed count, and / or weighing of the fresh weight of the ALOAE weeds. The detailed formulations and herbicidal efficacy of the herbicidal compositions tested and controlled in different field trials against ALOAE are shown in Tables 8-9 below, and the average herbicidal efficacy in two different fields is shown in Table 7 below.

[0171] The test results shown in Tables 8-9 and the average results shown in Table 7 clearly demonstrate that ALOAE weeds in fields IV and V during the current trial period have developed resistance or tolerance to the ALS-suppressing herbicide sulfadiazine, exhibiting very low herbicidal efficacy of 12.3% to 46.4% as measured at both 30 and 120 days after application of control composition 6 of sulfadiazine alone at 13.5 g ai / ha to ALOAE weeds in BBCH 11-12. As noted above, sulfadiazine is an effective herbicide for controlling ALOAE when first applied in the same field, with herbicidal efficacy equal to or greater than 95%. The test results suggest that the ALOAE weeds in these fields are likely ALS-R ALOAE weeds.

[0172] The field trial results shown in Tables 8-9 and the average results shown in Table 7 clearly demonstrate that, at both 30 and 120 days after application to ALOAE weeds at BBCH stage 11-12, as measured by visual assessment, weed count, and weighing of the fresh weight of ALOAE, test compositions 7-10 containing a mixture of 13.5 g ai / ha of sulfadiazine plus 60-180 g ai / ha of sulfadiazine provided significantly better control of ALOAE (alopecuroides) than either sulfadiazine alone or sulfadiazine alone at the corresponding application rates.

[0173] The applicant has further and unexpectedly discovered that test compositions 7-9, containing a mixture of 13.5 g ai / ha of sulfadiazine and low-application rates of 60, 90, and 120 g ai / ha of sulforaphane, as measured by visual evaluation and weighing of ALOAE weeds at both 30 and 120 days post-emergence application to BBCH 11-12 stage weeds, unexpectedly achieved better herbicidal efficacy in controlling ALOAE (eyegrass) or suspected ALS-R ALOAE weeds than the sum of sulfadiazine and sulforaphane alone at the corresponding application rates. Furthermore, no crop response was observed in winter wheat at 120 days post-emergence application. This indicates that the herbicidal compositions of this disclosure have good crop safety.

[0174] Example 5

[0175] In this study, two field trials were conducted to evaluate the herbicidal efficacy of test compositions containing mixtures of sulfadiazine and sulforaphane at different application rates and concentrations against the unwanted LOLMU (flora ryegrass) vegetation in two different winter wheat fields (Fields VI and VII). At the BBCH 11-12 stage of the weeds, test compositions 1-6 and control compositions 1-5 prepared in Example 1 were each applied (by spray) to the LOLMU weeds at an application rate of 225 L / ha (different combinations of application rates of 10.125-16.875 g ai / ha of sulfadiazine and 120-180 g ai / ha of sulforaphane) after emergence. The herbicidal efficacy of the test and control compositions against LOLMU was then evaluated at 30 and 120 days after application by visual assessment, weed count, and / or weighing of the fresh weight of the ALOAE weeds. The detailed formulations and herbicidal efficacy of the herbicidal compositions tested and controlled in different field trials against LOLMU are shown in Tables 11-12 below, and the average herbicidal efficacy in two different fields is shown in Table 10 below.

[0176] The test results shown in Tables 11-12 and the average test results shown in Table 10 clearly demonstrate that, as measured at 30 and 120 days after application, all the control compositions of either sulforaphane or roxaflutole alone showed very low herbicidal efficacy against LOLMU weeds in both test fields at all tested application rates. Furthermore, the test compositions containing mixtures of sulforaphane and roxaflutole at different application rates exhibited even lower herbicidal efficacy than the sum of the control compositions at the corresponding application rates. The results of this study indicate that the herbicidal efficacy of the test compositions is unpredictable relative to different weed types, and test results for one type of weed cannot be extrapolated to other types.

[0177] As used in Table 4-12 of Examples 1-5 in this paper, the term “O” refers to the actual observed herbicidal efficacy (in %) of the test and control compositions against unwanted vegetation; the term “E” refers to the expected herbicidal efficacy of the test composition containing a mixture of sulfadiazine and sulforaphane against unwanted vegetation, calculated based on the following Colby equation; and the term “O vs. E” refers to the difference between the observed herbicidal efficacy of the test herbicidal composition and the calculated expected herbicidal efficacy. The Colby equation is used to calculate the synergistic and antagonistic responses of herbicide combinations, as detailed in reference (SR, Colby, “Calculating Synergistic and Antagonistic Responses of Herbicide Combinations”, Weeds, Vol. 15, No. 1 (January 1967), pp. 20-22 (3 pages)). If the activity of individual compounds is simply additive, the expected value E is calculated using the following Colby equation: E = X + Y - (X·Y / 100) Where X = the effect of applying herbicide A at the application rate a (in percentage); Y = The effect of applying herbicide B at the application rate b (in percentage); E = the expected effect of A and B at application rates a and b, respectively (in percentage). If the actual value “O” observed during field trials is higher than the expected value “E” calculated according to the Colby equation, then a synergistic effect exists.
