[0001] Cross-references to related applications

[0002] This application claims the benefits of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 514,617, filed July 20, 2023; U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 648,694, filed May 17, 2024; U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 648,696, filed May 17, 2024; and U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 657,288, filed June 7, 2024, all of which are expressly incorporated herein by reference in their entirety.

[0003] background

[0004] Hydrogen peroxide is used as a biocide in fast-acting disinfectant compositions across various fields due to its broad biocidal activity against a wide range of organisms and its excellent environmental properties. Hydrogen peroxide offers advantages and benefits as both a disinfectant and a biocide because it decomposes into oxygen and water, making it very safe to use.

[0005] Typically, such fast-acting disinfectant compositions containing hydrogen peroxide are used to kill and / or prevent the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, yeasts, fungi, and spores. These fast-acting disinfectant compositions are used, for example, in the food service industry, healthcare industry, industrial settings, and for consumer home use to disinfect or sanitize items. They are also used for sanitizing or disinfecting surfaces, such as hard, non-porous surfaces.

[0006] Unfortunately, many disinfectant compositions require extended exposure times to effectively combat a wide variety of microorganisms. Typically, such disinfectant compositions maintain a kill time of 15 minutes or more, even 30-60 minutes.

[0007] However, it is important to effectively reduce or eliminate various microorganisms with the least possible amount of contact time, while still maintaining a reasonable cost for the product, thus allowing it to be used, for example, for commercial purposes.

[0008] Furthermore, given that hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing agent, it is generally unstable in most formulations. For example, many hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectant products have a shelf life of less than one year. In this regard, when formulating disinfectant products, hydrogen peroxide is often combined with one or more stabilizers to achieve the desired shelf life. Examples of common stabilizers used for hydrogen peroxide include phosphoric acid, 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP), pyridinecarboxylic acid, pyridinedicarboxylic acid, ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid, etc. However, these stabilizers significantly increase product costs. Various stabilizers are disclosed, for example, in U.S. Patent No. 9,321,664, which is incorporated herein by reference.

[0009] Alternatively, to achieve the desired stability, hydrogen peroxide is typically converted to peracetic acid when formulating disinfectant products. In such embodiments, hydrogen peroxide is combined with a large amount of acetic acid to produce peracetic acid in situ. For example, U.S. Patent Publication No. 2015 / 0291520, incorporated herein by reference, discloses a method for preparing peracetic acid by reacting acetic acid with hydrogen peroxide. However, acetic acid and peracetic acid produce an unpleasant odor. Furthermore, peracetic acid can cause skin irritation and is less environmentally friendly than hydrogen peroxide.

[0010] In view of the above, there is currently a need for hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectant compositions that are stable and fast-acting without the need for stabilizers.

[0011] Overview

[0012] This disclosure generally relates to rapidly acting disinfectant compositions comprising, upon equilibrium, at least about 3% by weight of hydrogen peroxide, an organic sulfonic acid or a salt thereof, and C1-C 14 Carboxylic acid. [0036] Other features and aspects of this disclosure will be discussed in more detail below.

[0037] Detailed Explanation

[0038] Those skilled in the art will understand that this discussion is merely a description of exemplary embodiments and is not intended to limit the broader aspects of this disclosure.

[0039] In general, this disclosure relates to rapidly acting disinfectant compositions containing a relatively high concentration of hydrogen peroxide. In one embodiment, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition contains a unique combination of hydrogen peroxide, an organic sulfonic acid, and a carboxylic acid (such as acetic acid and / or methanesulfonic acid). It has been found that this unique combination of an organic sulfonic acid or its salt with a relatively low amount of a carboxylic acid can activate the efficacy of hydrogen peroxide, making the rapidly acting disinfectant composition highly effective against a broad range of microorganisms. Furthermore, it has been found that this unique combination of an organic sulfonic acid or its salt with a relatively low amount of a carboxylic acid can be very rapidly effective against a broad range of microorganisms.

[0040] For example, the fast-acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure can reduce the presence of microorganisms to undetectable levels or completely eliminate any such microorganisms within a contact time ranging from about 1 second to about 10 minutes. In one aspect, the fast-acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure can immediately reduce or eliminate microorganisms upon contact. On the other hand, the rapid-acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure can reduce or eliminate microorganisms within about 1 second of contact, such as within about 2 seconds of contact, such as within about 3 seconds of contact, such as within about 4 seconds of contact, such as within about 5 seconds of contact, such as within about 6 seconds of contact, such as within about 7 seconds of contact, such as within about 8 seconds of contact, such as within about 9 seconds of contact, such as within about 10 seconds of contact, such as within about 15 seconds of contact, such as within about 20 seconds of contact, such as within about 30 seconds of contact, such as within about 40 seconds of contact, such as within about 50 seconds of contact, such as within about 1 minute of contact, such as within about 2 minutes of contact, such as within about 5 minutes of contact, such as within about 7 minutes of contact, and such as within about 10 minutes of contact, including all 0.1-second increments in between.

[0041] The rapidly acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure have been found to exhibit excellent efficacy against test microorganisms even after a short contact time. Notably, for example, the rapidly acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure eliminate Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa upon a 1-second contact time. Unexpectedly, such rapid activity provides near-instantaneous microbial killing efficacy.

[0042] It has also been found that the rapid-acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure are particularly well-suited for killing and inhibiting the growth of *Clostridium difficile*, even with relatively short contact times. For example, the rapid-acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure are able to achieve control of *Clostridium difficile* (*Clostridium difficile*) after 10 minutes of contact, 5 minutes of contact, or even 2 minutes of contact, when tested according to ASTM test methods ASTM E2197-11 and E2839-11. C. difficile At least 6 logs 10 The reduction.

[0043] In one aspect, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition can demonstrate efficacy against at least one non-enveloped or enveloped virus after a 15-second contact time, as tested according to ASTM test e1053. In one aspect, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition can demonstrate efficacy against at least one fungus after a 1-minute contact time, as tested according to the AOAC disinfectant spray / swab method. In one aspect, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition can demonstrate efficacy against at least one bacterium after a 15-second contact time, as tested according to the AOAC disinfectant spray / swab method. In one aspect, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition can demonstrate efficacy against at least one Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacillus after a 1-minute contact time, as tested according to the AOAC disinfectant's tuberculosis activity test.

[0044] In one respect, the rapid-acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure can demonstrate efficacy against hepatitis B virus [HBV], hepatitis C virus [HCV], HIV-1 [HTLC-IIIB strain], SARS-CoV-2, norovirus (ATCC VR-782 F-9 strain) or poliovirus type 1 (ATCC VR-1562).

[0046] In one respect, the rapid-acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure can demonstrate efficacy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 15442), Salmonella enterica (ATCC 10708), or Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538).

[0047] In one aspect, the rapid-acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure can exhibit efficacy against each of the following viruses: hepatitis B virus [HBV], hepatitis C virus [HCV], HIV-1 [HTLC-IIIB strain], SARS-CoV-2, norovirus (ATCC VR-782 strain F-9) or poliovirus type 1 (ATCC VR-1562).

[0048] In one respect, the rapid-acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure can exhibit efficacy against Mycobacterium bovis-BCG.

[0049] In addition to the exceptionally rapid efficacy described above, the compositions of the present invention are also unexpectedly stable. Previously, acetic acid and methanesulfonic acid were combined with hydrogen peroxide to destabilize it and convert it to peracetic acid. However, in this disclosure, it has been unexpectedly discovered that hydrogen peroxide becomes stable when present in a composition with carboxylic acids and organic sulfonic acids in specific ratios to each other. The inventors have found that when hydrogen peroxide is combined with carboxylic acids and organic sulfonic acids in specific weight percentages relative to each other, it is less likely to be converted to peracetic acid, thereby stabilizing hydrogen peroxide in solution.

[0050] In one aspect, the composition is formulated to be free of any hydrogen peroxide stabilizer. Therefore, the composition can be considered self-stabilizing, containing a relatively high amount of hydrogen peroxide, and has a shelf life of at least one year, such as at least two years.

[0051] Because the fast-acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure contain relatively low amounts of carboxylic acids and trace amounts of peracetic acid (if present), they exhibit significantly lower odor properties compared to many conventional products. For example, the fast-acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure can be formulated to be substantially free of peracetic acid and / or chlorine bleach.

[0052] The fast-acting disinfectant compositions disclosed herein can be used in many and different applications. In one embodiment, for example, the fast-acting disinfectant compositions can be used for sanitation or disinfection of hard, non-porous surfaces. For example, the fast-acting disinfectant compositions are well-suited for disinfecting or sanitation of flooring materials, countertops, ceramic surfaces, metal surfaces, glass surfaces, stone surfaces, etc.

[0053] The fast-acting disinfectant composition is also well-suited for hygienic treatment of soft surfaces. Examples of soft surfaces include, but are not limited to, upholstery, fabrics, upholstered benches, sofas, chairs, cushions, upholstered mats, pillows, upholstered furniture, fabric window coverings, curtains, drapes, shower curtains, fabric gym / laundry diaper bags, backpacks, fabric baskets, fabric dog / pet bedding, blankets, fabric upholstered car seats, fabric stuffed animals, toys, etc.

[0054] The rapidly acting disinfectant composition can be used to clean surfaces, disinfect surfaces, kill microorganisms on surfaces, and / or prevent the growth of microorganisms on surfaces. The rapidly acting disinfectant composition can be used in many different fields. For example, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition is ideally suited for use in the healthcare industry for disinfecting surfaces and / or instruments. The rapidly acting disinfectant composition can be used in hospitals, for example, to prevent the spread of Clostridium difficile, Staphylococcus aureus, and / or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

[0055] The fast-acting disinfectant composition can be used in the food service industry for disinfecting and sanitation of food processing equipment and other food processing surfaces, or for cleaning products such as vegetables. The fast-acting disinfectant composition can also be sold for consumer home use. Depending on the application, the composition can be used in concentrated or diluted form.

[0056] The rapidly acting disinfectant composition typically contains a combination of a hydrogen peroxide source and an organic sulfonic acid and a carboxylic acid. The hydrogen peroxide source may comprise hydrogen peroxide. However, in other embodiments, the hydrogen peroxide source may comprise a compound that generates hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide source may include, for example, alkali metal hydrogen peroxide solutions, alkali metal salts of percarbonates and persulfates, and organic peroxides. Organic peroxides may include dicumyl peroxide, dialkyl peroxides, urea peroxide, etc. Hydrogen peroxide itself offers many advantages and benefits. It is not only active against a wide range of microorganisms but is also relatively safe to use. Hydrogen peroxide can oxidize and / or bleach surfaces while degrading into very safe byproducts, namely oxygen and water.

[0057] As described above, the fast-acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure not only contains a relatively high concentration of hydrogen peroxide, but also contains hydrogen peroxide in a relatively stable state.

[0058] For example, the composition may contain an amount greater than about 1% by weight, such as greater than about 2% by weight, such as greater than about 3% by weight, such as greater than about 4% by weight, such as greater than about 5% by weight, such as greater than about 6% by weight, such as greater than about 7% by weight, such as greater than about 8% by weight, such as greater than about 9% by weight, such as greater than about 10% by weight, such as greater than about 11% by weight, such as greater than about 12% by weight, such as greater than about 13% by weight, in a ready-to-use composition. Hydrogen peroxide in amounts greater than about 14% by weight, greater than about 15% by weight, greater than about 16% by weight, greater than about 17% by weight, greater than about 18% by weight, greater than about 19% by weight, greater than about 20% by weight, greater than about 21% by weight, greater than about 22% by weight, greater than about 23% by weight, greater than about 24% by weight, and greater than about 25% by weight, including all 0.1% by weight increments therein.

[0059] For example, hydrogen peroxide in ready-to-use compositions may be present in amounts less than about 24.5% by weight, such as less than about 23.5% by weight, such as less than about 22.5% by weight, such as less than about 21.5% by weight, such as less than about 20.5% by weight, such as less than about 19.5% by weight, such as less than about 18.5% by weight, such as less than about 17.5% by weight, such as less than about 16.5% by weight, such as less than about 15.5% by weight, such as less than about 14.5% by weight, such as less than about 13.5% by weight. If present in the composition in amounts less than about 12.5% by weight, less than about 11.5% by weight, less than about 10.5% by weight, less than about 9.5% by weight, less than about 8.5% by weight, less than about 7.5% by weight, less than about 6.5% by weight, less than about 5.5% by weight, less than about 4.5% by weight, less than about 3.5% by weight, less than about 2.5% by weight, or less than about 1.5% by weight, including all 0.1% by weight increments therein.

[0060] As described above, the fast-acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure contains hydrogen peroxide in a relatively stable state, although the concentration of hydrogen peroxide is relatively high.

[0061] To determine stability, the percentage of active hydrogen peroxide in the formulation was measured at the time of formulation preparation and then weekly thereafter. The percentage of hydrogen peroxide loss was calculated using the following formula:

[0062] [Initial H2O2 % - H2O2 % (after storage in the oven)] / Initial H2O2 % x 100.

[0063] The rapid-acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure is also formulated to inhibit the conversion of hydrogen peroxide to peracetic acid, thereby providing hydrogen peroxide stability in the composition of this disclosure. The rapid-acting disinfectant composition is formulated such that peracetic acid is substantially absent from the composition. In one aspect, the rapid-acting disinfectant composition contains less than about 5% by weight, such as less than about 3% by weight, such as less than about 1% by weight, such as less than about 0.75% by weight, such as less than about 0.50% by weight, such as less than about 0.25% by weight, such as less than about 0.1% by weight, including all increments of 0.1% therein. In one particular embodiment, the composition is substantially free of peracetic acid. In one particular embodiment, peracetic acid (if present) is present in undetectable amounts.

[0064] In one aspect, after reaching equilibrium and being stored at 54°C for two weeks, the rapid-acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure retains more than about 80% by weight of the amount of hydrogen peroxide present in the initial composition. For example, the rapid-acting disinfectant composition can retain at least about 81% by weight, such as at least about 85% by weight, such as at least about 90% by weight, such as at least about 95% by weight, such as at least about 99% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein. Surprisingly, this is achieved by means of the unique combination of hydrogen peroxide, organic sulfonic acid, and carboxylic acid of this disclosure.

[0065] According to this disclosure, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition, in addition to hydrogen peroxide, contains a combination of an organic sulfonic acid or its salt and a relatively small amount of a carboxylic acid. Unexpectedly, the presence of the organic sulfonic acid and hydrogen peroxide stabilized the hydrogen peroxide, thereby maintaining the hydrogen peroxide level in the solution close to its initial level. The inventors have discovered that when hydrogen peroxide and at least an organic sulfonic acid are present in solution in a specific ratio, the conversion of hydrogen peroxide to peracetic acid is minimized if not prevented. In one aspect, when hydrogen peroxide is present in the composition with both a carboxylic acid and an organic sulfonic acid, the hydrogen peroxide becomes stable without any additional stabilizers.

[0066] Organic sulfonic acids can be non-surfactant sulfonic acids. Examples of sulfonic acids that can be used include C1-C7 alkyl sulfonic acids, sulfonated C1-C7 carboxylic acids, substituted or unsubstituted aromatic sulfonic acids, mixtures thereof, and their salts. In one aspect, organic sulfonic acids can be methanesulfonic acid (MSA), p-toluenesulfonic acid (TSA), dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, and / or benzenesulfonic acid (BSA).

[0067] In another embodiment, the alkyl sulfonic acid and sulfonated carboxylic acid have C1-C5 chains. In the case of substituted aromatic sulfonic acids, the aromatic ring can be substituted by at least one C1-C3 alkyl group. In other words, if the aromatic ring is substituted, the alkyl group can contain three (3) carbon atoms or fewer. Salts of non-surfactant organic sulfonic acids are alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts, such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Salts may also include ammonium salts. Representative examples of non-surfactant organic sulfonic acids are methanesulfonic acid, dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, benzenesulfonic acid, toluenesulfonic acid, xylenesulfonic acid, ethylbenzenesulfonic acid, and mixtures thereof. In one aspect, for example, the composition comprises sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate.

[0068] Organic sulfonic acids are typically present in rapidly acting disinfectant compositions in amounts from about 0.1% by weight to about 6% by weight, such as from about 0.2% by weight to about 4% by weight, including all 0.1% by weight increments therein. For example, organic sulfonic acids may be present in rapidly acting disinfectant compositions in amounts greater than about 0.5% by weight, such as greater than about 1% by weight, such as greater than about 1.5% by weight, and typically in amounts less than about 5% by weight, such as less than about 4% by weight, such as less than about 3% by weight.

[0069] In one aspect, the organic sulfonic acid comprises methanesulfonic acid and is present in the composition in an amount of about 1.5% by weight to about 2.5% by weight, such as in an amount of about 1.8% by weight to about 2.2% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein. In another aspect, methanesulfonic acid is present in the composition in an amount of about 0% by weight, about 1% by weight, about 2% by weight, about 3% by weight, and about 4% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein.

[0070] In one aspect, the organic sulfonic acid comprises BSA and is present in the composition in an amount of about 1% to about 4% by weight, such as in an amount of about 1.4% to about 3.2% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein. In another aspect, BSA is present in the composition in an amount of about 0% by weight, about 1% by weight, about 1.4% by weight, about 1.5% by weight, about 3% by weight, and about 3.5% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein.

[0071] In one aspect, the organic sulfonic acid comprises TSA and is present in the composition in an amount of about 1% to about 3% by weight, such as in an amount of about 1.4% to about 3.1% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein. In another aspect, TSA is present in the composition in an amount of about 0% by weight, about 1% by weight, about 1.4% by weight, about 1.5% by weight, about 2.8% by weight, and about 2.9% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein.

[0072] In one aspect, the organic sulfonic acid comprises dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid or sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, and is present in the composition in an amount of about 0.05% by weight to about 3% by weight, such as in an amount of about 0.1% by weight to about 2.9% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein. In another aspect, dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid or sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate is present in the composition in an amount of about 0% by weight, about 0.25% by weight, about 0.5% by weight, about 0.75% by weight, about 1% by weight, about 2% by weight, and about 2.8% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein.

[0073] As described above, the fast-acting disinfectant composition, in addition to hydrogen peroxide and organic sulfonic acids, may also be combined with a relatively small amount of carboxylic acids. In one aspect, the carboxylic acid may contain C1 to C2. 14 Carboxylic acids. For example, carboxylic acids can include C1 to C4 carboxylic acids, such as C1 to C2 carboxylic acids. In one embodiment, a carboxylic acid can include formic acid, carbonic acid, and / or acetic acid. It should be noted that although carbonic acid is not generally classified as a carboxylic acid, it is considered one of the possible C1 to C2 carboxylic acids within the context of this invention.

[0074] For example, carboxylic acids may be present in a fast-acting disinfectant composition in an amount less than about 7% by weight, such as less than about 6% by weight, such as less than about 5% by weight, such as less than about 4% by weight, such as less than about 3% by weight, such as less than about 2.5% by weight, such as less than about 2.2% by weight, including all 0.1% by weight increments therein. Carboxylic acids may be present in the composition in an amount greater than about 0.1% by weight, such as greater than about 0.5% by weight, such as greater than about 0.8% by weight, such as greater than about 1.2% by weight, such as greater than about 1.5% by weight, such as greater than about 1.8% by weight, such as greater than about 2.1% by weight, such as greater than about 1.8% by weight, such as greater than about 4.8% by weight, such as greater than about 5.9% by weight, including all 0.1% by weight increments therein.

[0075] Surprisingly, it was found that the relative amounts of organic sulfonic acids and carboxylic acids combined with a relatively large amount of hydrogen peroxide could "self-stabilize" hydrogen peroxide, preventing its degradation or conversion into peracetic acid. It was also believed that organic sulfonic acids and carboxylic acids could activate the efficacy of hydrogen peroxide, making the fast-acting disinfectant composition highly effective against various microorganisms (e.g., Clostridium difficile).

[0076] The weight ratio of hydrogen peroxide to organic sulfonic acid and the weight ratio of hydrogen peroxide to carboxylic acid can vary depending on the specific application and the desired results. In one aspect, the weight ratio of hydrogen peroxide to organic sulfonic acid can be from about 40:1 to about 1:20, such as from about 20:1 to about 1:10, such as from about 5:1 to about 1:5, such as from about 2:1 to about 1:2. The weight ratio of hydrogen peroxide to carboxylic acid can be from 500:1 to about 2:1, such as from about 100:1 to about 2:1, such as from about 40:1 to about 2:1, such as from about 20:1 to about 2:1, such as from about 12:1 to about 4:1.

[0077] In one aspect, the weight ratio between hydrogen peroxide, organic sulfonic acid or its salt, and carboxylic acid may be, for example, about 15:4:6, about 15:4:5, about 15:4:4, about 15:2:3, about 15:1:3, about 15:2:2, about 19:0:6, about 19:4:6, or about 19:3:6.

[0078] The rapidly acting disinfectant composition may also contain a liquid carrier. The liquid carrier may be a solubilizer for one of the components in the composition. The liquid carrier may comprise water, alcohol, or mixtures thereof. For example, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure may comprise an aqueous solution. Alcohol solvents that can be used include ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, benzyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butanediol, or mixtures thereof.

[0079] The amount of liquid carrier in the composition can be adjusted to adjust the hydrogen peroxide level in the composition. The liquid carrier can be present in amounts from about 20% to about 95% by weight, such as from about 50% to about 80% by weight. For example, one or more liquid carriers can be present in a fast-acting disinfectant composition in amounts greater than about 60% by weight, such as greater than about 70% by weight, such as greater than about 75% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein.

[0080] The solubility and compatibility of fast-acting liquid disinfectant compositions can be further improved by adding appropriate amounts of other solubilizers, such as water-soluble agents, surfactants, or mixtures thereof, to improve the solubility and physical properties of the solution.

[0081] Examples of water-soluble co-solubilizers include n-octane sulfonate, xylene sulfonate, naphthalene sulfonate, or mixtures thereof. One or more water-soluble co-solubilizers may typically be included in a rapidly acting disinfectant composition in an amount less than about 5% by weight, such as less than about 2% by weight, or less than about 1% by weight. One or more water-soluble co-solubilizers may be present in the composition in an amount greater than about 0.01% by weight, such as greater than about 0.1% by weight, or greater than about 0.5% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein.

[0082] Suitable surfactants can be selected from the group consisting of ionic, nonionic, and amphoteric surfactants, with nonionic and / or ionic surfactants or mixtures thereof being preferred. Compatible nonionic surfactants include alkoxylated alcohols, such as ethoxylated alcohols; and alkoxylated diols, such as those having C6 to C6... 18 Alkyl groups in alkyl-containing alkoxylated ethylene glycol or propylene glycol; alkylated diols; or mixtures thereof. When present, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition may contain one or more nonionic surfactants in an amount greater than about 0.1% by weight, such as greater than about 0.5% by weight, such as greater than about 1.5% by weight, such as greater than about 2.5% by weight, such as greater than about 3% by weight, such as greater than about 5% by weight, such as greater than about 7% by weight, such as greater than about 8% by weight. One or more nonionic surfactants may be present in the composition in amounts less than about 25% by weight, such as less than about 15% by weight, such as less than about 10% by weight, such as less than about 5% by weight. In one aspect, relatively small amounts of nonionic surfactants may be incorporated into the composition, such as in amounts less than about 2.5% by weight, such as in amounts less than about 1.5% by weight, such as in amounts less than about 1% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein.

[0083] Instead of one or more nonionic surfactants, or in addition, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition may also contain one or more anionic surfactants. Suitable anionic surfactants include alkyl sulfates, alkyl ether sulfates, alkyl ether sulfonic acids and their salts, alkylbenzene sulfonates, alkanolamide sulfates, ethoxylated alkylphenols, or mixtures thereof. Other surfactants that may be used include quaternary ammonium salts or tertiary amine N-oxides. In one embodiment, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition contains an alkylbenzene sulfonate, such as sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate.

[0084] One or more anionic surfactants are typically included in the rapidly acting disinfectant composition in relatively small amounts. For example, one or more anionic surfactants may be present in the composition in amounts less than about 5% by weight, such as less than about 3% by weight, such as less than about 1.5% by weight, such as less than about 1% by weight, such as less than about 0.8% by weight, including all increments of 0.1%. One or more anionic surfactants may be present in the composition in amounts greater than about 0.001% by weight, such as greater than about 0.01% by weight, such as greater than about 0.1% by weight, such as greater than about 0.3% by weight, including all increments of 0.1%.

[0085] Previously, fast-acting disinfectant compositions containing hydrogen peroxide typically required the use of hydrogen peroxide stabilizers. However, it has been unexpectedly discovered that the compositions of this disclosure are self-stabilizing hydrogen peroxide without the addition of any hydrogen peroxide stabilizer. Therefore, in one embodiment, the fast-acting disinfectant composition is free of hydrogen peroxide stabilizers.

[0086] For example, the fast-acting disinfectant composition may be free of one or more hydrogen peroxide stabilizers, including phosphorus compounds, polycarboxylic acids, and phosphates. For example, the composition may be free of phosphoric acid or its derivatives, including phosphates. The composition may also be formulated to be free of metal chelating agents. More specifically, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition can be formulated to be free of one or more of the following hydrogen peroxide stabilizers: phosphoric acid, 1-hydroxyethylidene bisphosphonic acid (HEDP), phytic acid, aminophosphate, phosphonates and monosodium glutamate, ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid, NaH2PO4, sodium tripolyphosphate, organophosphonic acid, aminophosphonates, silver dihydrogen citrate, bisphosphonic acid, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), N-(hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediaminetriacetic acid (HEDTA), ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid, pyridine carboxylic acid stabilizers such as pyridinecarboxylic acid or pyridinedicarboxylic acid, tris(methylene phosphoric acid), diethylenetriaminepenta(methylene phosphoric acid), 2-hydroxyethyliminobis(ethylene phosphoric acid), citric acid, nitriotriacetic acid. (NTA), 2-hydroxyethyliminodiacetic acid (HEIDA) and its salts, cyclohexane-1,2-diaminotetramethylenephosphonic acid or water-soluble (water-sol), diethylenetriaminepenta (methylenephosphonic acid), colloidal stannate, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), citrate, gallate, malate, malonate, oxaloacetate, oxalate, pyruvate, succinate or mixtures thereof.

[0087] As discussed above, the rapid-acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure is also formulated to promote the stability of hydrogen peroxide and inhibit the conversion of hydrogen peroxide to peracetic acid. Furthermore, the rapid-acting disinfectant composition is formulated such that substantially no peracetic acid is added to the composition as a component. In one aspect, the rapid-acting disinfectant composition contains less than about 1% by weight, such as less than about 0.75% by weight, such as less than about 0.50% by weight, such as less than about 0.25% by weight, including all increments of 0.1% therein. In one specific embodiment, the composition is substantially free of peracetic acid.

[0088] Other additives may also be added to the fast-acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure to provide suitable properties for the end-use application. Common examples include corrosion inhibitors, pH adjusters, emulsifiers, fragrances, dyes, preservatives, defoamers, and mixtures thereof.

[0089] For example, in one embodiment, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition may contain a corrosion inhibitor. Corrosion inhibitors that may be used include borates, phosphates, polyphosphates, sodium benzoate, sodium gluconate, sodium silicate, sodium molybdate, sodium bisulfate, benzotriazole, or mixtures thereof. When present, the corrosion inhibitor may be included in the composition in an amount from about 0.001% by weight to about 2% by weight, such as from about 0.01% by weight to about 1% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein.

[0090] The rapidly acting disinfectant composition may also contain one or more pH adjusters. For many applications, the composition has a pH of less than about 7, such as less than about 5, such as less than about 4, such as less than about 3, such as less than about 2, such as less than about 1. In one aspect, the pH adjuster may contain an alkali that raises the pH. For example, the alkali may contain hydroxides such as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, or mixtures thereof. The pH adjuster may typically be present in the rapidly acting disinfectant composition in an amount from about 0.01% by weight to about 4% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein. For example, the pH adjuster may be present in the composition in an amount greater than about 0.1% by weight, such as greater than about 0.3% by weight and less than about 1.5% by weight, such as less than about 1.3% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein.

[0091] In one embodiment, a relatively concentrated, fast-acting disinfectant composition is prepared and sold or otherwise distributed to an end user. The end user can then dilute the concentrated solution during or before use. Particularly advantageously, the fast-acting disinfectant composition can be diluted with water (such as tap water).

[0092] In one embodiment, a relatively concentrated, fast-acting disinfectant composition is prepared, containing about 20% to about 70% by weight, such as about 22% to about 65% by weight, of one or more organic sulfonic acids, such as about 5% to about 35% by weight, such as about 15% to about 25% by weight, and about one or more carboxylic acids, including all 0.1% increments therein. Other ingredients that may reduce water content may be present.

[0093] In another embodiment, the concentrated composition contains only inert components and / or all components except hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide may be added to the concentrate at the time of use. For example, the concentrated composition may contain one or more organic sulfonic acids in amounts from about 5% to about 35% by weight, such as from about 15% to about 25% by weight, and one or more carboxylic acids in amounts from about 5% to about 35% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein. Then, an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide may be added to the concentrated composition at the time of use in a manner that produces the desired concentration of the component. The aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide may contain hydrogen peroxide in amounts from about 5% to about 80% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein. In one aspect, the aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide may contain less than about 24.5% by weight, such as from about 18% to about 24% by weight, including all 0.1% increments therein.

[0094] The fast-acting disinfectant composition can be used in any suitable application where disinfection, sanitation, cleaning, and / or bleaching are desired. The fast-acting disinfectant composition can be used for consumer home use, in the healthcare field, in the food processing or food service field, for sterilizing surfaces in dairy and brewery plants, in the veterinary field, and / or in cleanrooms.

[0095] The fast-acting disinfectant composition can be applied to opposing surfaces using various methods and techniques. For example, the fast-acting disinfectant composition can be sprayed onto opposing surfaces, or objects can be immersed in the composition.

[0096] One particularly useful application method is to impregnate the fast-acting disinfectant composition into a wiping cloth substrate. The wiping cloth may be a single-use wiping cloth impregnated with the fast-acting disinfectant composition and stored in a container to be dispensed to a user. The container with the wiping cloth may contain a single wiping cloth or multiple wiping cloths. Suitable containers include pouches containing a single wiping cloth, such as damp wipes torn open by the user; or pouches or other containers with resealable openings that contain multiple wiping cloths in a stacked, rolled, or other suitable manner, allowing a single wiping cloth to be removed from the opening each time. Pouches are typically made of a fluid-impermeable material, such as a membrane, coated paper, or foil, or other similar fluid-impermeable material. Another way to dispense the wiping cloths of this disclosure is to place the wiping cloths into a fluid-impermeable container with an opening for accessing the wiping cloths in the container. The container may be a molded plastic container with a fluid-impermeable lid. Typically, the lid will have an opening for accessing the wiping cloths in the container. The wipes in the container can be stacked in a staggered manner, such that when a wipe is removed from the container, the next wipe is positioned in the container's opening, ready for the user to retrieve. Alternatively, the wipes can be a continuous material with perforations between individual wipes of the continuous material. The perforated continuous wipe material can be folded or rolled up. Typically, in a rolled up form, the wipe material is supplied from the center of the rolled material. As with staggered stacking, when a wipe is removed from the container, the next wipe is positioned in the opening for easy retrieval when needed.

[0097] The fast-acting disinfectant composition can be impregnated into a wiping material, pre-wetting the material, and the composition will be squeezed out or released onto the surface as the wiping material moves across it. Typically, the fast-acting disinfectant composition is saturated in the wiping material, allowing it to release the composition onto the surface through the wiping action. Typically, the fast-acting disinfectant composition is present in an amount of about 2 to 6 parts by weight, more preferably about 3 to 5 parts by weight, per part by weight of the wiping material substrate. Complete saturation of the substrate can be achieved within these ranges. It should be noted that the amount of the fast-acting disinfectant composition can be increased or decreased depending on the specific wiping material substrate to achieve complete saturation.

[0098] Suitable wiping substrates include woven and nonwoven materials. Virtually any nonwoven web material can be used. Exemplary nonwoven materials may include, but are not limited to, meltblown, coform, spunbond, air-laid, hydroentangled nonwovens, spunlace, bonded carded webs, and laminates thereof. Optionally, the nonwoven may also be laminated with a membrane material. The fibers used to prepare the wiping substrate can be cellulose fibers, thermoplastic fibers, and mixtures thereof. The fibers can also be continuous fibers, discontinuous fibers, short fibers, and mixtures thereof. The base weight of the nonwoven web can vary from about 12 grams per square meter to 200 grams per square meter or more.

[0099] Once applied to a surface, the fast-acting disinfectant composition is allowed to remain on the surface for a period of time. As mentioned, it was unexpectedly found that the described fast-acting disinfectant composition significantly reduces the contact time required to kill microorganisms.

[0125] As shown in Table 5 below, the fast-acting disinfectant compositions of this disclosure are found to be effective against microorganisms.

[0126] Table 5

[0127]

[0128] Standards: ≥6.0 log 10 reduce

[0129] As shown above, the fast-acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure exhibits excellent efficacy against microorganisms even after a short contact time.

[0130] As further shown in Table 6 below, it was found that when the carboxylic acid used in the composition has a carbon chain length of C1 to C5 (e.g., formic acid, acetic acid, citric acid), the fast-acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure exhibits 6 log [amount missing]. 10 The good effect of reducing [something].

[0131] Table 6

[0132]

[0133] Standards: ≥6.0 log 10 reduce

[0134] Samples 13-15, each containing formic acid, acetic acid, and glycolic acid, were effective against *Clostridium difficile* when the composition contained approximately 8% w / w hydrogen peroxide and approximately 1-4% w / w MSA. Surprisingly, these example compositions showed efficacy against *Clostridium difficile* after 6 logs of contact time of 3 minutes or less when tested according to ASTM test method E2197-11. 10 Or a greater reduction.

[0135] The efficacy of ready-to-use and pre-saturated wipes was also tested. The wipes were loaded with a fast-acting disinfectant composition of the present disclosure, such as sample 7. The methods used are shown in Table 7.

[0136] Table 7

[0137]

[0138] Table 8 lists various enveloped and non-enveloped viruses for which this disclosure was tested. The tests were conducted at room temperature in the presence of 5% fetal bovine serum organic contaminants with a 15-second contact time, demonstrating GLP-compliant results for hospital-associated organisms.

[0139] Table 8

[0140]

[0141] Table 9 lists various fungi and bacteria for which this disclosure's rapid-acting disinfectant compositions were tested. Tests were conducted for fungi and Mycobacterium tuberculosis with a 1-minute exposure time, and for other bacteria with a 15-second exposure time. Tests were performed at room temperature in the presence of 5% fetal bovine serum organic contaminants. Results were GLP-compliant for hospital-associated organisms.

[0142] Table 9

[0143]

[0144] Samples 17-20 were further tested for Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with contact times of only 1 second and 5 seconds. The Germicidal Spray Product Test Method (GST) was used according to AOAC Methods of Analysis, 18th Edition (2013).

[0145] For each test sample, 20 carriers were used in these tests, and no organic contaminants were applied. Surprisingly, for Staphylococcus aureus, all four test formulations showed zero positive growth in all 20 carriers at both 1-second and 5-second contact times. Equally surprising, for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, all four test formulations showed zero positive growth in all 20 carriers at a 1-second contact time.

[0146] Table 10 shows the microbial efficacy test results for Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 (1-second contact time and 5-second contact time) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442 (1-second contact time). Unexpectedly, immediate killing efficacy was observed.

[0147] Table 10

[0148]

[0149] As shown above, the rapidly acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure exhibits excellent efficacy against the tested microorganisms even after a short contact time. Notably, 100% of Staphylococcus aureus positive carriers were disinfected after 1 second and 5 seconds of contact with the rapidly acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure. Equally unexpectedly, 100% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa positive carriers were disinfected after 1 second of contact with the rapidly acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure. The inventors have discovered a composition that provides near-immediate antimicrobial efficacy.

[0150] In addition, it was noted that formulations containing lower amounts of acetic acid (especially 2% w / w acetic acid), as shown in Table 1, have a significantly lower odor than known commercial products containing higher levels of acetic acid and peracetic acid.

[0151] The stability of samples 1-12 was also tested. Specifically, the formulations were stored in an oven at 54°C. The percentage of active hydrogen peroxide in the formulations was measured at the time when the formulations were prepared and had reached equilibrium, and then weekly during the stability storage period. The percentage of hydrogen peroxide loss was calculated using the following formula:

[0152] [Initial H2O2 % - H2O2 % (after storage in the oven)] / Initial H2O2 % x 100.

[0153] The stability test results for samples 1-8 are shown in Table 11 below.

[0154] Table 11

[0155]

[0156] The formulation is at approximately 5.0-5.2% H 2 O 2 Preparation

[0157] As shown above, all formulations exhibited less than 5% hydrogen peroxide loss after two weeks at 54°C, which corresponds to a one-year shelf life at room temperature. This stability result is unexpected and significant, especially considering the absence of hydrogen peroxide stabilizers in the formulations. Reducing the amount of carboxylic acid in the formulations yields even more stable products.

[0158] As shown above, the fast-acting disinfectant composition of this disclosure can show a loss of less than about 2%, such as less than about 1%, of hydrogen peroxide after storage at 54°C for one or two weeks.

[0159] The wiping substrate was saturated with samples 6 and 7, and the stability of the wiping substrate was also tested. The wiping substrate was made of 100% polypropylene fiber. The wiping substrate was ERHT bonded and not pretreated with any surfactant. The liquid to wiping substrate loading ratio was 4:1 by weight. The wiping materials were stored in an oven at 54°C for four weeks. The initial hydrogen peroxide concentration was determined and then measured weekly during the stability study. The results are shown in Tables 12 and 13. Table 12 shows the results using sample 6, while Table 13 shows the results using sample 7.

[0160] Table 12

[0161] Table 12 shows the stability test results of sample 6.

[0162]

[0163] Table 13

[0164] Table 13 shows the stability test results of sample 7.

[0165]

[0166] As shown above, even after four weeks, the hydrogen peroxide concentration did not decrease by more than 5%. After three weeks, the hydrogen peroxide concentration decreased by no more than 2%, such as no more than about 1.5%. These results are unexpected and significant because the composition does not contain a hydrogen peroxide stabilizer.

[0167] As shown in Table 14 below, it is noted that in formulations containing high levels of hydrogen peroxide, organic sulfonic acids (i.e., BSA (sample 10), TSA (sample 11), and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (sample 12)) exhibit similar stability properties.

[0168] Table 14

[0169]

[0170] The fast-acting disinfectant compositions of samples 10 and 11 showed the lowest percentage of hydrogen peroxide loss. For example, sample 10 lost approximately 4.77% of hydrogen peroxide, and sample 11 lost approximately 4.39% of hydrogen peroxide. However, it is noted that sample 9, which does not contain any organic sulfonic acid or its salts, showed a higher percentage of hydrogen peroxide loss than samples 10 and 11, which contain BSA and TSA respectively, mentioned above.

[0171] Surprisingly, it was found that less hydrogen peroxide was lost when the composition contained at least one organic sulfonic acid or its salt (even in small amounts) compared to similar or otherwise nearly identical compositions that did not contain any organic sulfonic acid or its salt. These results were unexpected and significant because the composition did not contain a hydrogen peroxide stabilizer.

[0172] In fact, as mentioned above, it would have been assumed that compositions containing high levels of hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid would react to produce peracetic acid, thereby significantly reducing the percentage of hydrogen peroxide in the composition. However, this disclosure unexpectedly reveals that when compositions containing high levels of hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid are further combined with an organic sulfonic acid or its salt (even in small amounts), the percentage loss of hydrogen peroxide is minimized, thereby stabilizing the composition without any stabilizers. Such stability, as tested, after two weeks of storage at 54°C, is equivalent to a shelf life of at least one year at room temperature.
