Abstract

The invention relates to a process for converting magnesium chloride into magnesium oxide and HCl, comprising the steps of: - subjecting a magnesium chloride solution having a concentration of 30-50 wt% of magnesium chloride to thermal hydrolysis in a thermal hydrolysis reactor, which is a spray dryer, the reactor being at a temperature of at least 300°C, the heat in the thermal hydrolysis reactor being generated by combustion of a combustible gas provided by a burner, - withdrawing from the thermal hydrolysis reactor a solid magnesium oxide product and a gas stream containing HCl having a temperature of at least 300°C, characterized in that the combustible gas comprises at least 30 mole% of H2, calculated on the total number of moles of combustible compounds in the combustible gas, and in that the solid magnesium oxide product has a content of MgO of at least 97.5 wt% and a sum of basic magnesium chloride and magnesium chloride of less than 2.5 wt% (which corresponds to 1.2 wt% of chlorides), calculated on the total amount of these three components. It has been found that the use of hydrogen as combustible compound allows the formation of a high purity magnesium oxide product, while at the same time the processing temperature in the spray dryer can be kept relatively low. The latter is attractive from an economic point of view. Also claimed is a process for manufacturing a carboxylic acid, wherein the process for converting magnesium chloride into magnesium oxide and HCl is one of the steps.
