AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing power supply units require a variety of protection levels in potentially explosive environments, while also suffering from a large number of components and high open-circuit power loss.

Method used

The system employs a combined design of power supply circuit, protection circuit, selection circuit, energy flow monitoring circuit, and control circuit. By switching the state of the selection circuit and controlling the signals of the control circuit, the system can activate and deactivate independent power supply paths, reduce the power consumption of unused paths, and meet the requirements of different protection levels.

Benefits of technology

It achieves diverse levels of protection in potentially explosive environments while reducing component count and open-circuit power loss, meeting the intrinsic safety requirements of IEC 60079-11.

Abstract

The power supply unit includes a power supply circuit (100) for providing internal operating voltage, a protection circuit, two selection circuits (311, 312), two energy flow monitoring circuits (321, 322), and a control circuit (400). A first protected power supply path for selective activation of the power supply unit is formed by means of the power supply circuit, protection circuit, selection circuit (311), and monitoring circuit (321), and a second protected power supply path for selective activation of the power supply unit is formed by means of the power supply circuit, protection circuit, selection circuit (312), and monitoring circuit (322). The control circuit (400) is specifically configured to output a selection signal for activating the first power supply path in a first operating mode and, alternatively, to output a selection signal for activating the second power supply path in a (alternative) second operating mode. Each of the monitoring circuits (321, 322) is also configured to monitor a corresponding energy flow based on at least one corresponding energy flow parameter, particularly to determine whether at least one energy flow parameter has exceeded at least one corresponding energy flow threshold, and optionally to output a fault signal to notify the protection circuit of this condition. The protection circuit is also configured to switch from a first operating mode to a second operating mode, controlled by one or more error signals, in the first operating mode, whereby the load input of the protection circuit is electrically connected to the load output of the protection circuit, which is electrically connected to the load output of the power supply circuit, and in the second operating mode, the load input of the power supply circuit or the load output connected thereto is short-circuited, thus equivalently interrupting each of the first and second power supply paths.
