Abstract

A smart parking system and control logic for assisting occupants to exit a vehicle are provided. A method of operating a master vehicle includes: a vehicle controller, communicating with vehicle dynamic sensors and / or a vehicle control module, determining whether the master vehicle is parked; if so, the controller responsively retrieves sensor data from a vehicle sensor array to detect any open points near the lateral side of the master vehicle. For each detected open point, the vehicle controller determines whether an occupant in a vehicle seat is leaving the master vehicle to enter that open point; if so, the controller responsively activates a different subset of sensors from the sensor array assigned to the corresponding vehicle seat. Using real-time sensor data received from the sensor subsets, the vehicle controller determines whether a target vehicle is approaching the corresponding open point; if so, the controller responsively commands a vehicle subsystem to perform remedial actions to prevent an occupant from leaving the passenger compartment to enter the open point.
