AI Technical Summary
Existing exhaust oxygen sensors in internal combustion engines are prone to degradation when water contacts the sensor, leading to inaccurate oxygen concentration readings and affecting air-fuel ratio control, which in turn impacts engine performance.
The exhaust oxygen sensor operates in a variable voltage mode (VVs) to detect water presence based on sensor parameters such as pumping current, transitioning to this mode when water is detected and returning to a non-VVs mode when water evaporates, allowing accurate air-fuel ratio estimation by other sensors during water presence.
This approach reduces sensor degradation and maintains accurate air-fuel ratio estimation, thereby improving engine efficiency and performance by using alternative sensors during water contact.
