Abstract
Description
Technical FieldThe present invention relates to a brake system for braking an electric vehicle and to an electric vehicle having such a brake system.BackgroundCurrent electric vehicles, particularly hybrid vehicles, employ regenerative and / or regenerative braking techniques to substantially utilize the kinetic energy of the vehicle by using the electric machine (electric engine) as a generator to charge a traction battery of the vehicle and / or to propel devices of the vehicle during a braking maneuver. By employing regenerative braking, the range of the electric vehicles may be significantly increased and the fuel consumption and thus CO2 emissionen may be significantly reduced, particularly in city traffic situations involving frequent braking and / or acceleration. In the case of conventional brake systems, normally both a mechanical brake (e.g., a vacuum pressure-operated friction brake for braking the wheels of the vehicle) and a regenerative brake operate in parallel, i.e., simultaneously, so that actually an optimal amount of energy can be recovered. To improve such conventional systems, sophisticated cooperative braking systems have been introduced by certain suppliers and / or manufacturers. These systems, e.g., iBlue from Bosch, provide a direct distribution of braking power to a mechanical brake and an electric machine brake depending on the specific driving situation. For example, in the regenerative mode, under average driving conditions, the braking power of the electric machine may be used. However, the available power of the electric machine may vary depending on factors such as speed and state of charge of the battery. As a result, in specific cases and / or for specific states of charge of the battery, the friction brake may be used to assist and / or replace regenerative braking, e.g., for rapid deceleration, low speed, and / or in stationary situations.Such sophisticated systems are particularly useful in the case of electric motors with a high power output. However, in some applications, e.g., mild hybrids or other hybrids with small electric motors, regenerative braking may be limited. In these and other cases, the above-mentioned solutions may be overtechnized and / or too costly.Document US 7 232 192 B2 describes a system for braking the wheels of a hydraulic hybrid vehicle having a fixed dead zone displacement range which decelerates the actuation of the wheel friction brakes while the pedal is being displaced. The document U.S. Pat. No. 9,266,507 B2 describes an adjustable brakeby wire pedal system in which an initial position of the pedal is adjusted.Furthermore, DE 10 2006 019 494 A1 discloses a brake system for braking an electric vehicle, having: a brake pedal having: a region of regenerative braking of the pedal displacement from a starting position of the brake pedal to a position of maximum recuperation of the brake pedal and a region of mechanical braking of the pedal displacement which begins at the position of maximum recuperation of the brake pedal; A brake controller configured to activate a deceleration of the electric vehicle based on pedal displacement, the brake controller configured to activate the deceleration of the electric vehicle based on regenerative braking within the range of regenerative braking and based on mechanical braking within the range of mechanical braking, the brake controller further configured to adjust the range of regenerative braking according to a state of charge of a traction battery of the electric vehicle.Disclosure of the InventionIt is therefore the object of the invention to provide simpler and more cost-effective solutions for brake systems of electric vehicles which make use of the recuperation potential and provide the driver with a consistent brake feel. The object is achieved by a brake system having the features of claim 1 and an electric vehicle having the features of claim 8.According to one aspect of the invention, a brake system for braking an electric vehicle comprises a brake pedal having a region of regenerative braking of the pedal displacement from an initial position of the brake pedal to a position of maximum recuperation of the brake pedal and a region of mechanical braking of the pedal displacement beginning at the position of maximum recuperation of the brake pedal; and a brake controller configured to activate a deceleration of the electric vehicle based on the pedal displacements, wherein the brake controller is configured to activate the deceleration of the electric vehicle based on the regenerative braking within the region of regenerative braking and based on the mechanical braking within the region of mechanical braking, wherein the brake controller is further configured to set the region of regenerative braking according to a state of charge of a traction battery of the electric vehicle. Here, the brake controller includes a pedal adjuster configured to adjust the range of regenerative braking, and the pedal adjuster includes at least one eccentric pedal adjuster configured to adjust the range of regenerative braking with an eccentric member and / or a rotating pedal adjuster with a lead screw configured to rotatably adjust the range of regenerative braking.According to another aspect of the invention, an electric vehicle includes an electric motor, a traction battery, and a brake system according to the invention. An idea of the present invention is to provide a defined range of non-frictional braking in a brake pedal which is used only for regenerative braking and is activated in a first phase of the braking after the brake pedal has been actuated. In order to avoid a potential undefined and / or inconsistent driver brake pedal feel, for example when the traction battery is fully charged, the brake controller adjusts the range of regenerative braking accordingly. As a result, it is possible to apply the maximum available recuperation power in a first stage of the braking process. The mechanical friction brakes are used subsequently, if any, only when the driver actuates the brake pedal beyond the range of regenerative braking. This is relevant in particular if the capacity of the regenerative braking is not sufficient for the braking maneuver. The present solution thus improves fuel efficiency and CO2 verringerung and generally extends the range of driving. In addition, wear on the mechanical (friction) brakes is reduced and, finally, costs are saved. Changes in the regenerative braking due to the state of charge of the traction battery are compensated for and thus a constant brake feel is provided to the driver. The brake controller of the present invention may be incorporated in the brake pedal, in particular. In this case, the present system can be retrofitted primarily to vehicles with conventional brake systems, since only the brake pedal itself has to be replaced. It will be understood that the term "electric vehicle" or other similar term as used herein generally includes motor vehicles having at least one electric motor, and motor bicycles and passenger cars including off-road vehicles (SUVs), buses, trucks, various business vehicles, and the like, as well as hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered vehicles, and vehicles with other alternative fuels having at least one additional electric machine (e.g., fuels derived from resources other than petroleum). As referred to herein, a hybrid vehicle is a vehicle having two or more sources of power, such as both gasoline-powered and electric-powered vehicles. Moreover, it should be appreciated that electric vehicles according to the invention further include other vehicles having an electric motor, e.g., electric bicycles. In the latter case, the braking system of the invention may relate, for example, to a bicycle brake. The term "brake pedal" as used herein generally refers to a mechanical brake control device that can be operated by a driver to brake the electric vehicle. It is clear that a brake pedal according to the invention relates not only to devices operated by a foot (a brake pedal in the literal sense) but also to devices operated by a hand or the like (e.g. a brake lever of a bicycle).Advantageous embodiments and improvements of the present invention are found in the dependent claims.According to one embodiment of the invention, the brake controller may be configured to reduce the range of regenerative braking as the state of charge of the traction battery increases. The brake controller may be configured to continuously reduce the range of regenerative braking as the state of charge of the traction battery increases. The range of regenerative braking may thus be decreased in accordance with the state of charge of the traction battery. In principle, the range of regenerative braking can be reduced until it reaches a negligible length, which means that the regenerative braking is not used at all and the mechanical brake is activated immediately after the brake pedal is actuated.According to an embodiment of the invention, the brake controller may be configured to begin reducing the range of regenerative braking when the state of charge of the traction battery exceeds a predefined charge threshold. In this case, the regenerative braking can be used completely as long as the state of charge of the traction battery does not exceed the predefined threshold value. As soon as this occurs, the range of regenerative braking can be reduced, for example continuously.According to an embodiment of the invention, the brake controller may be configured to set the range of regenerative braking so that a maximum available recuperation of the electric vehicle is achieved at the position of maximum recuperation of the brake pedal. In this case, the recuperation potential of the electric motor and / or of the traction battery is fully used. The use of mechanical braking, e.g., vacuum assisted friction braking, may be reduced to cases where the full performance of regenerative braking is not sufficient to perform the requested braking maneuver.According to an embodiment of the invention, the brake controller may be configured to reduce the range of regenerative braking to substantially zero when the traction battery is in a fault condition and / or the traction battery is fully charged. A traction battery fault condition may be, for example, any case of traction battery system failure where the battery is not (fully) operable. More generally, a traction battery fault condition may be more generally defined as any case of system failure where the electrical components of the powertrain are not fully operational. In a particular example, the electric motor, i.e., the electric machine, may be turned off, disconnected from the traction battery, and / or inoperative.According to an embodiment of the invention, the brake controller may be integrated into and / or mounted on the brake pedal. In other embodiments, only the pedal adjuster may be integrated with and / or mounted on the brake pedal. In this particular example, the brake system can be easily retrofitted to existing systems because only the brake pedal needs to be replaced with the brake pedal of the present invention (the latter having the pedal adjuster and / or brake controller).According to the invention, the pedal adjustment device has at least one eccentric pedal adjustment device and / or one rotating pedal adjustment device. In one example, an electric motor may move, e.g., rotate, an eccentric member that, due to its specific shape, may provide different areas of regenerative braking by closing an elongated hole that defines the area of regenerative braking. The electric motor and the eccentric member may be mounted on the brake pedal. In another example, the pedal adjuster may be configured as a rotatable lever or the like, e.g., a threaded shaft of a spindle (drive) driven by an electric motor mounted on the brake pedal. Clockwise rotation may increase the slot and counterclockwise rotation may decrease the slot or vice versa, thus increasing or decreasing the range of regenerative braking. Alternatively, the spindle drive may be used to extend or shorten a push rod of the brake system that defines the response of the mechanical braking. In this case, the electric motor can be fastened to the push rod.According to an embodiment of the invention, the area of regenerative braking may be defined by an elongated opening within the brake pedal. The elongated opening may be adjustable in length to adjust the range of regenerative braking. The elongated opening can be adjustable in length, in particular by the pedal adjustment device, in order to adjust the range of regenerative braking. For example, a push rod of the brake system for activating the mechanical brake may be mounted within a horizontally disposed elongated hole of the brake pedal via a bearing element that is slidably locked with the elongated hole such that the brake pedal only starts to push the push rod, and thus activates the mechanical brake when the bearing element contacts a distal end of the elongated hole with respect to the push rod.The invention will be explained in more detail with reference to exemplary embodiments which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings.Brief Description of the DrawingsThe accompanying drawings are included to provide a further understanding of the present invention and are incorporated in and constitute a part of this specification. This application is generally intended to cover all adaptations or variations of the specific embodiments discussed herein.Detailed Description of EmbodimentsFIG. 1 schematically illustrates an example of brake output 22 as a function of pedal displacement 21 according to a conventional brake system 10', e.g., as shown in FIG. 6. This example of a conventional brake system 10' includes a brake pedal 1 having a foot rest 12 attached to a brake lever 11 mounted on an electric vehicle (not shown) at a pivot point 14. The brake pedal is furthermore connected to a push rod 13 in such a way that the push rod 13 activates a mechanical brake of the brake system 10' when the foot rest 12 is pressed downwards and / or pressed or pushed forwards (on the left in FIG. 6, cf. arrows). The brake system 10' may be configured such that two brake mechanisms operate in parallel with each other, namely a mechanical brake operated by the pushrod 13 and a regenerative brake driven by an electric motor and a traction battery of the electric vehicle. The mechanical brake can be, for example, a vacuum-boosted friction brake of the wheels of the electric vehicle. As seen in FIG. 1, a total braking power 22 dis the sum of the regenerative brake regenerative braking power 22 aand the mechanical brake mechanical braking power 22 c, where the regenerative braking power provides 40% of the total braking power 22 din this particular example. As can also be seen, the maximum regenerative braking power 22 bis only fully exhausted at the extreme right end of the function plan, i.e. for very high values of the pedal displacement 21. However, at lower values of the pedal displacement 21, only a fraction of the maximum regenerative braking power 22 bis used. As a result, in this conventional case, the fuel saving potential of the regenerative braking is not fully exhausted. On the other hand, FIG. 2 shows the braking power 22 as a function of the pedal displacement 21 for a brake system 10 according to one specific embodiment of the present invention. In this case, the pedal displacement 21 is divided into two ranges, a pedal displacement regenerative braking range 2 which extends from an initial position 2a of the brake pedal 1 to a maximum recuperation position 2b of the brake pedal and a pedal displacement mechanical braking range 3 which starts at the maximum recuperation position 2b of the brake pedal 1. That is, a typical braking process has two stages: a regenerative braking process as a first stage (immediately after the brake pedal 1 is activated) and a subsequent mechanical braking process as a second stage (when the brake pedal 1 is moved beyond the maximum recuperation position 2 b). The brake system 10, particularly the brake pedal 1, may be configured as one embodiment of the embodiments of Figs. 7 to 9, which will be described in more detail below. The brake systems 10 may be integrated into an electric vehicle 100, as exemplarily shown in FIG. 10. The electric vehicle 100 can be, for example, a hybrid vehicle having, on the one hand, an internal combustion engine 24 and, on the other hand, an electric motor 23 connected to a traction battery 6.As can be seen in FIG. 2, the total braking power 22 dis again the sum of the regenerative braking power 22 aof the regenerative braking and the mechanical braking power 22 cof the mechanical braking. However, unlike the conventional case of FIG. 1, in this embodiment of the invention, the regenerative braking power 22a contributes only to the total braking power 22d within the regenerative braking region 2. The mechanical braking is activated only after the pedal displacement 21 reaches the maximum recuperation position 2b, and consequently the mechanical braking power 22c contributes to the total braking power 22d only after this point (within the mechanical braking range 3). This provision ensures that the braking and consequently the energy saving potential of the regenerative braking is fully exhausted. The mechanical braking is used only when the maximum regenerative braking power 22 bis not sufficient to perform the requested braking maneuver, i.e. when the brake pedal 1 is pressed beyond the position 2 bof the maximum recuperation.FIG. 3 shows, by way of example, the regenerative braking power 22 aof the brake system 10 of FIG. 2 as a function of the pedal displacement 21 for different states of charge 5 of the traction battery 6. the solid line relates to a state of charge 5 of between 0 and 70%, the dotted line relates to a state of charge 5 of 80%, the line provided with short dashed lines to a state of charge 5 of 90% and the line provided with long dashed lines to a state of charge 5 of 100%. As may be inferred from FIG. 3 for this particular example, the maximum regenerative braking power 22 bmay be used only in the event that the state of charge 5 of the traction battery 6 is between 0 and 70%. For higher values of the state of charge 5, only a reduced amount of the regenerative braking power 22 ais available. In the extreme case of a fully charged traction battery 6, regenerative braking is not possible and consequently cannot contribute to the regenerative braking power 22 b.FIG. 4 schematically illustrates a braking power 22 as a function of pedal displacement 21 for various states of charge 5 of the traction battery 6 of the brake system 10 of FIG. 2. As can be seen here, the region 2 of regenerative braking decreases when the state of charge 5 of the traction battery 6 passes the threshold value of 70%, and decreases in the case of a fully charged traction battery 6 until it is essentially zero. In this case, only the mechanical braking power 22 cadds to the total braking power 22 d. It will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that the specific values of battery charges and the function values for braking power are provided by way of example only and will differ from these particular values in other embodiments of the invention.FIG. 5 illustrates an opening length 9 of a horizontal elongated opening 8 used in the brake system 10 of FIG. 2 for various states of charge 5 of the traction battery 6. As will be explained in detail with reference to Figures 7 to 9, the elongated opening 8 will be used to define the region 2 of regenerative braking. By varying the length of the elongated opening 8, the length of the regenerative braking region 2 can be adjusted. The elongated opening 8 defines in this sense a range of the "free stroke" of the brake pedal 1, in which no mechanical braking takes place and only the regenerative braking is used. The arrow in FIG. 5 indicates that the opening length 9 of the elongate opening 8 can be continuously reduced from a state of charge 5 of between 0 and 70% to a fully charged traction battery 6 of 100% (cf. arrow in FIG. 4 ). In this case, the elongated opening 8 reduces to a circular opening that does not provide a regenerative braking region 2, and the brake system 10 immediately activates the mechanical braking as soon as the brake pedal 1 is operated.FIG. 7 schematically shows a brake system 10 in which a linear pedal adjusting device 7a for linearly adjusting the regenerative braking region 2 does not belong to the invention. As described above, the brake system 10 includes a brake pedal 1 having a pedal displacement regenerative braking region 2 from an initial position 2 aof the brake pedal 1 to a maximum recuperation position 2 bof the brake pedal 1 and a pedal displacement mechanical braking region 3 starting at the maximum recuperation position 2 bof the brake pedal 1. The regenerative braking region 2 is defined by an elongated opening 8 inside the brake pedal 1, in which a push rod 13 of the brake pedal 1 is mounted and which is adjustable in length 9 to vary the regenerative braking region 2 (see black arrow on the right side in FIG. 7 ).The brake system 10 further includes a brake controller 4 configured to activate deceleration of the electric vehicle 10 based on the pedal displacement. In particular, the brake controller 4 is configured to activate the deceleration of the electric vehicle 100 exclusively based on the regenerative braking within the regenerative braking region 2 and based on the mechanical braking within the mechanical braking region 3.The brake controller 4 is further configured to set the regenerative braking region 2 according to the state of charge 5 of the traction battery 6 of the electric vehicle 100. For this purpose, the brake controller 4 has a control unit 20 which can be communicatively connected to the traction battery 6 and / or the electric motor 23 and / or other components of the electric vehicle 100 and can be a processor, a microcontroller or the like. The brake controller 4 of this embodiment further includes a pedal adjuster 7 amounted on the brake pedal 1 and configured to adjust the regenerative braking region 2. Specifically, the pedal adjuster 7 ais configured as a linear pedal adjuster 7 afor linearly adjusting the regenerative braking region 2. More specifically, the linear pedal adjuster 7a comprises a toothed wheel 16 driven by an electric adjusting motor 15 and in turn drives a sliding toothed and / or slotted rod 17, the latter enlarging or reducing the elongated opening 8. The thus set opening length 9 of the elongated opening 8, on the other hand, defines at which point the push rod 13 is activated within the elongated opening 8 by actuating / depressing the brake pedal 1 after a defined range of "free stroke" through the elongated opening 8 in which only regenerative braking is used. As a result, the linear pedal adjuster 7 ais capable of continuously reducing and / or enlarging the regenerative braking region 2. The brake controller 4 is configured in particular to reduce the regenerative braking region 2 via the linear pedal adjuster 7 awith an increasing state of charge 5 of the traction battery 6 when the state of charge 5 of the traction battery 6 exceeds a predefined charge threshold value, e.g. 70%, as explained above. The brake controller 4 is configured together with the linear pedal adjuster 7 aand the elongated opening 8 for adjusting the regenerative braking region 2 such that a maximum available recuperation of 100% of the electric vehicle 100 is achieved after a pedal displacement equal to the regenerative braking region 2.The brake controller 4 is further configured to reduce the regenerative braking region 2 to substantially zero when the traction battery 6 is in a fault condition and / or the traction battery 6 is fully charged. A failure condition of the traction battery 6 may be, for example, any case of a system failure of the traction battery 6 in which the battery 6 is not fully operational, or more generally any case of a system failure in which the electrical components of the powertrain of the electric vehicle 100 are not fully operational. The brake controller 4 may then first check whether the traction battery 6 is operational. In the event of a fault, the region 2 of the regenerative braking is set to zero. Otherwise, the brake controller 4 evaluates the state of charge 5 of the traction battery 6. If the state of charge 5 is between 0% and 70%, for example, the region 2 of the regenerative braking can be set to a maximum value (MAX). If the state of charge 5 exceeds a charge threshold y, in this example y=70%, the brake controller 4 may continuously set the regenerative braking region 2 according to the following formula: where rbr is the regenerative braking region 2 (regenerative braking range) and SOC is the state of charge 5 (state of charge). As a result, in this case, the regenerative braking range 2 can be varied between a maximum value (for y from 0% to 70%) and zero (for y=100%).FIGS. 8 and 9 illustrate similar embodiments of a brake system 10 wherein different configurations of the pedal adjuster 7 b, 7 care provided. FIG. 8 includes an eccentric pedal adjuster 7b configured to adjust the regenerative braking region 2 with an eccentric member 11 driven by a gear 16b, which in turn is driven by another gear 16a connected to an electric adjusting motor 15. Due to the eccentricity of the eccentric element 11, non-linear adjustments and / or variations of the region 2 of regenerative braking are possible. The embodiment of Fig. 9, on the other hand, is provided with a rotating pedal adjuster 7c configured as a spindle drive having an electric adjusting motor 15 and a lead screw 19 for rotatably adjusting the regenerative braking portion 2. For example, clockwise rotation may enlarge the elongated opening 8, while counterclockwise rotation may reduce the elongated opening 8.Finally, the regenerative braking range 2 is adjusted according to the state of charge 5 of the traction battery 6 such that the movement of the brake pedal 1 compensates for charge variations and thus provides a constant brake feel to the driver. The potential of regenerative braking is fully exhausted because mechanical braking is activated only after the maximum regenerative braking power 22 bis provided by the regenerative braking. This leads to a higher CO2 verringerung and / or extension of the range of driving and reduced wear of the mechanical brakes, e.g. vacuum-boosted friction brakes. Finally, costs are reduced. In principle, the embodiments of Figures 7 to 9 may replace conventional systems such as that of Figure 6. For this purpose, it may be sufficient to replace only the brake pedal 1 with the brake pedals 1 of FIGS. 7 to 9, since the brake adjusting devices or brake actuators 4 are integrated in the brake pedals 1.Reference list1 Brake pedal 2 Regenerative braking region 2 a Ausgangs position 2 b Maximalen recuperation position 3 Mechanical braking region 4 Brake control 5 State of charge 6 Traction battery 7 aLinear pedal adjuster 7 b Exzentrische pedal adjuster 7 c Drehende pedal adjuster 8 Elongated opening 9 Opening length 10, 10' Brake system 11 Brake lever 12 Foot rest 13 Push rod 14 Fulcrum 15 Electric adjusting motor 16, 16 a, 16 b Zahnrad 17 Shifting toothed / slotted rod 18 Eccentric member 19 Threaded spindle 20 Control unit 21 Pedal shifting 22 Braking power 22 a Regenerative braking power 22 b Maximale regenerative braking power 22 cMechanism braking power 22 d Gesamt braking power 23 Electric motor 24 Internal combustion engine 100 Electric vehicle
