Description

Field of the invention

[0001] The present invention relates to the provision of color effects in card-shaped data carriers. In particular, the invention relates to a card-shaped data carrier, the use of such a card-shaped data carrier as an identification document, identity document, chip card, or payment card, and a method for producing a card-shaped data carrier. Background of the invention

[0002] Card-shaped data storage devices are used in a wide variety of applications today. For example, such data storage devices can be used for cashless payment of goods or services, for personal identity verification, or for accessing internet-based applications. Accordingly, card-shaped data storage devices exist, for example, in the form of chip cards in general, payment cards such as credit cards or debit cards, as well as personal identification or identity cards. These card-shaped data storage devices typically have a layered structure, with electronics, coils, and contact interfaces for communication with external readers integrated into the layered structure. Furthermore, card-shaped data storage devices are provided with various externally visible colors to create a color effect or color impression for a viewer of the card-shaped data storage device. The colors can be provided in the form of printing layers in the card-shaped data carrier or as prints on a surface of the card-shaped data carrier.

[0003] However, signs of wear, such as abrasion of the paint on surface areas, can reduce the color effect over time. Description

[0004] It is an object of the present invention to provide a card-shaped data carrier which retains a color effect over longer periods of time.

[0005] This object is achieved by the subject matter of the independent claims. Exemplary embodiments emerge from the dependent claims and the following description.

[0006] According to one aspect, a card-shaped data carrier is provided. The card-shaped data carrier comprises a card body having a first card surface, a second card surface, and a peripheral edge. The peripheral edge connects the first card surface to the second card surface. The peripheral edge has a first edge portion with at least one recess, wherein the at least one recess is at least partially filled with a color material to thus provide a color effect for the first edge portion.

[0007] With the card-shaped data carrier according to the invention, it is possible to provide a receiving area for the ink material by geometrically shaping an edge region of the card body. This area offers protection for the received ink material, so that the ink material is less subject to wear even under external stress. In particular, precisely defined recesses are provided in the edge region in which the ink material is stored, with the recessed partial areas formed by the recesses being protected by adjacent, protruding parts.

[0008] Generally, card-shaped data storage devices, especially payment cards, are used daily. For example, a credit card or debit card is inserted into a card reader to initiate a payment process. When the card is inserted into a reader, the surfaces, particularly the edges and borders, of the card often come into contact with parts of the reader, which promotes abrasion in these areas of the card. Consequently, wear and tear occurs over time, with color layers on the surface gradually being removed. Even simply carrying a payment card in your wallet can cause wear and tear due to the constant movement of the card within the wallet.

[0009] In order to reduce wear of the ink material, at least in the edge region of the card-shaped data carrier, the ink material in the card-shaped data carrier according to the invention is accommodated in at least one recess. This can mean that the ink material, for example in the form of a paint application or ink insertion, is introduced into the recess and forms an accumulation of the ink material there. This accumulation of ink material is less likely to be abraded under external stress, since it is unlikely that sharp objects will penetrate this recess and thus damage or remove the ink material in the recess.

[0010] The at least one recess may comprise a plurality of recesses distributed along the peripheral edge. However, it is also possible for only a single recess to be provided, extending partially or completely along the peripheral edge.

[0011] The peripheral edge can be formed by a plurality of edge sections, which together define a length and a width of the card body. In a plan view of the card body, the card body has a rectangular shape, for example. The peripheral edge can define the lateral closures or ends of the card body, wherein the peripheral edge is formed in the form of a wall that extends substantially perpendicular to the first card surface and / or the second card surface. In this wall of the peripheral edge, the recess can be provided in the form of a depression, notch, groove, trough, groove, etc. Several such geometric formations can also be provided in the peripheral edge.

[0012] The peripheral edge has the first edge portion, in which the at least one recess is provided. The edge portion can be a part of the peripheral edge, in particular a straight edge portion of the card body, which defines a first lateral end of the card body.

[0013] The at least one recess is partially or completely filled with the color material. When completely filled with the color material, the recess is completely filled by the color material, so that an outer surface of the first edge portion assumes a flat or smooth shape. If not completely filled with the color material, a recessed part of the recess may not be completely filled, so that lateral boundaries of the recess protrude slightly from the color material. These protruding boundaries can be felt by a user of the card-shaped data carrier, so that a haptic effect is also created for the user by means of the recess partially filled with color material.

[0014] The color material can contain an arrangement of one or more color components. In other words, the color material can cause a viewer of the card-shaped data carrier to perceive one or more colors in the first edge portion of the card body when viewing the card-shaped data carrier. In this way, the color effect can be provided for the first edge portion. If multiple color components are provided in the recess, the viewer can perceive different colors in the first edge portion.

[0015] Advantageously, the ink material is not simply applied to the card body edge, but rather inserted into at least one recess in the card body edge, so that the ink material is better protected from external mechanical influences. Various types and shapes of recesses can be provided, which are explained in more detail below.

[0016] The card-shaped data carrier can be considered a card element, which can be flat and constructed in several layers, which are created in a lamination process during the manufacture of the card element. The card body can be manufactured in this way. For example, the card body can have a base structure and a surface layer, i.e., a so-called overlay. The card body can also comprise one or a plurality of security features, such as a security chip, in the area of the card element surface, etc.

[0017] An electronic contact interface can also be provided, which is located in the region of the first card surface. A coil or an antenna element can also be embedded in the card body to thus provide a contactless interface for the card-shaped data carrier.

[0018] According to one embodiment, the at least one recess is provided in the form of a depression in the first edge portion, which extends perpendicular to the first card surface and / or to the second card surface.

[0019] In this case, a recess wall of the recess, which represents a closure of the card body in the first edge section, can be arranged substantially perpendicular to the first card surface and / or the second card surface. The wall can be configured in the form of half of a cylindrical surface. A plurality of such recesses or recess walls extending perpendicular to the first and / or second card surface can be provided in the edge section.

[0020] According to one embodiment, the at least one recess is provided in the form of a depression in the first edge portion, which extends from the first card surface to the second card surface.

[0021] In other words, the depression and thus the depression wall extending perpendicular to the first and / or second card surface can extend across the entire thickness of the card body. In a plan view of the first and / or second card surface, the depression would therefore be visible through a lateral notch or depression. In the event that a plurality of such cutouts in the form of corresponding depressions are provided, a viewer in a plan view of the first and / or second card surface can see a grooved structure in the region of the first edge section of the card body. This grooved structure can ultimately also provide a haptic effect for the user. This is because the protruding areas of this grooved structure can be felt by the user, especially if the cutouts are not completely filled with ink material. The ribbed structure formed by a plurality of adjacent recesses can extend along the entire peripheral edge, i.e. along several edge sections.

[0022] According to one embodiment, the at least one recess is provided in the form of an elongated depression in the first edge portion, which extends parallel to the first card surface and / or to the second card surface.

[0023] In this case, a recess wall of the elongated recess, which represents a termination of the card body in the first edge section, can run substantially parallel to the first card surface and / or the second card surface. The wall can be designed in the form of an elongated hollow, groove, or groove. In a side view, viewed parallel to the first and / or second card surface, the elongated recess would therefore be visible through a lateral hollow, groove, or groove. The elongated recess can extend along the entire peripheral edge, i.e., along multiple edge sections.

[0024] According to one embodiment, the at least one recess has a curved shape, a rectangular shape, or a triangular shape in a cross-section parallel to the first card surface and / or the second card surface. The curved shape can be a semicircle or a parabolic shape. Additionally or alternatively, the at least one recess has a curved shape, a rectangular shape, or a triangular shape in a cross-section perpendicular to the first card surface and / or the second card surface. The curved shape can be a semicircle or a parabolic shape.

[0025] A wide variety of shapes can be provided for the recess, with the ink material being held or stored in a protected manner within the recess. In particular, the recess can be designed such that the probability that an object could penetrate the recess and thus release the ink material from the recess is very low. If the ink material were simply applied to a flat surface or outer surface of a card body edge, a portion of the ink material would potentially be released upon contact with objects from the surroundings. The card-shaped data carrier according to the invention can effectively counteract precisely this disadvantage, since the ink material is arranged in a protected manner within the recess or recesses.

[0026] According to one embodiment, the at least one recess is defined by a depressed part and two protruding parts, wherein the two protruding parts are adjacent to the depressed part and wherein the color material is provided at least in the depressed part.

[0027] This type of recess shape protects the ink material in the first edge section of the card-shaped data carrier from wear and tear. The two protruding parts and the recessed part can be formed by boundary walls of the recess, with the boundary walls defining the recess itself.

[0028] The protruding parts essentially shield the recessed part, so that an object approaching the edge of the card body would first come into contact with one or both of the protruding parts. The object therefore does not, or at least not completely, penetrate the recessed part, thus preventing the object from coming into contact with the ink material, or at least only to a limited extent, and potentially dissolving it from the recessed part.

[0029] According to one embodiment, the first edge portion has a plurality of recesses arranged at regular intervals from one another along the first edge portion, wherein each recess of the plurality of recesses is at least partially filled with a color material in order to thus provide the color effect for the first edge portion.

[0030] It can be provided that each recess of the plurality of recesses is completely filled with the color material in order to thus provide the color effect for the first edge section. In particular, an outer surface formed by the color material and outward-facing surfaces of the protruding parts of the recess can run flush. The first edge section can thus form a completely flat or smooth surface. However, it can also be provided that the outward-facing surfaces of the protruding parts are covered by color material. It can also be provided that the outward-facing surfaces of the protruding parts protrude slightly from the color material, resulting in a grooved structure in the first edge section, which in turn creates a haptic effect for the user.

[0031] According to one embodiment, the peripheral edge comprises the first edge portion, a second edge portion, a third edge portion and a fourth edge portion, wherein the first edge portion is opposite the third edge portion with respect to the card body and wherein the second edge portion is opposite the fourth edge portion with respect to the card body.

[0032] In other words, the card body can have four rectilinear edge regions, wherein an edge section is provided in each edge region or each edge region forms an edge section. The four edge sections can together form the peripheral edge of the card body. The features and properties explained above and below with respect to the first edge section can also apply to the second, third, and fourth edge sections. In particular, at least one recess or a plurality of recesses, as described herein, can be provided in some or more of said edge sections.

[0033] According to one embodiment, the at least one recess extends along the first edge portion, the second edge portion, the third edge portion and the fourth edge portion.

[0034] The recess can be an elongated recess in the form of a groove, channel, or depression that extends parallel to the first and / or second card surface. Since the first, second, third, and fourth edge sections can jointly form the peripheral edge, the elongated recess can extend along the entire peripheral edge. In this way, the color material can be provided along the entire peripheral edge in the recess extending there, so that the color effect is provided along the entire peripheral edge area of the card body.

[0035] According to one embodiment, the ink material is an ultraviolet-curing (UV-curing) printing ink. The ink can therefore be applied to the edge section by means of a printing process. However, a spraying process or a coating process, such as dip coating, are also possible.

[0036] According to one aspect, the card-shaped data carrier described herein is intended to be used as an identification document, identity document, chip card or payment card.

[0037] According to one aspect, a method for producing a card-shaped data carrier is provided. In one step of the method, a card body is provided which has a first card surface, a second card surface, and a peripheral edge, wherein the peripheral edge connects the first card surface to the second card surface. In a further step, at least one recess is provided in a first edge portion of the peripheral edge. In a further step, a color material is introduced into the at least one recess in order to thus provide a color effect for the first edge portion that is perceptible to a user of the card-shaped data carrier. The method steps can be carried out in the specified order.

[0038] According to one embodiment, the provision of the at least one recess in the first edge portion of the peripheral edge takes place during punching out of the card body.

[0039] The card body can be punched out of a card body semi-finished product, whereby the recesses can be simultaneously incorporated into the card body by appropriately shaping the punching tool.

[0040] According to one embodiment, the provision of the at least one recess in the first edge portion of the peripheral edge is carried out by means of a laser process or a milling process.

[0041] For example, the recesses can be made by milling or lasering in the first edge section after the card body has been punched out of the card body semi-finished product.

[0042] According to one embodiment, the color material is introduced into the at least one recess by means of a printing process or a spraying process.

[0043] The color material can be introduced after the provision of at least one recess in the edge section. [0044] The representations in the figures are schematic and not to scale. Where the same reference symbols are used in different figures in the following description, they refer to identical or similar elements. Identical or similar elements may also be designated by different reference symbols.

[0045] Fig. 1 shows a plan view of a first card surface 11 of a card body 10 of a card-shaped data carrier 1. The card body 10 has a peripheral edge 13, which is formed by four rectilinear edge sections 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d. The peripheral edge 13 comprises in particular a first edge section 13a, a second edge section 13b, a third edge section 13c and a fourth edge section 13d. These four edge sections 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d together define the peripheral edge 13. The first edge section 13a is opposite the third edge section 13c relative to the card body 10 and the second edge section 13b is opposite the fourth edge section 13d relative to the card body. Fig. 1 shown card format, for example an ID-1 format.

[0046] Fig. 2 shows a side view of the card body 10 of the card-shaped data carrier 1 from Fig. 1, wherein only a portion of the peripheral edge 13 is shown. As can be seen, the card body 10 has a first card surface 11 and a second card surface 12, wherein the peripheral edge 13 connects the first card surface 11 to the second card surface 12.

[0047] Fig. 3 shows a plan view of a part of the first card surface 11 of Fig. 1, with ink material 15 or ink application in the first edge section 13a of the card body 10. The irregular line pattern in the area of the first edge section 13a is intended to illustrate ink material abrasion in some sub-areas of the first edge section 13a. Such abrasion or wear is the result of continuous everyday wear and tear on the card-shaped data carrier 1. The edge or border may be uneven, and the applied ink is exposed to mechanical stress during daily use of the card-shaped data carrier 1. For example, when inserting the card-shaped data carrier 1 into a card reader, the edge or border of the card body 10 of the card-shaped data carrier 1 is subjected to severe mechanical stress, and the ink is gradually removed as a result.According to the invention, one or more recesses are to be provided in the region of the first edge section 13a, or in the region of the further edge sections 13b, 13c, 13d of the card body 10, wherein the ink material is received or stored in these recesses.

[0048] Fig. 4 shows recesses 14 with color material 15 received or stored therein in the first edge section 13a of the card body 10 from Fig. 1. It can be seen that the recesses 14 form a ridged structure in the first edge section 13a when viewed from above on the card body 10. In the Fig. In the example shown in Figure 4, exactly three adjacent recesses 14 are filled with color material 15. However, it should be understood that more or fewer recesses 14 in the edge portion 13a may be filled with color material 15. In particular, all recesses 14 may be filled with color material 15.

[0049] Further in Fig. 4 that by filling the recesses 14 with color material 15, a substantially flat surface is created in the edge section 13a. In other words, the recesses 14 can be filled with color material 15 in such a way that a substantially flat or smooth surface is created in the first edge section 13a. A dashed circle in Fig. 4, which is marked X, indicates a detailed area of the first edge section 13a, which in relation to the Fig. 5 is explained in more detail.

[0050] Fig. 5 now shows the detailed view X from Fig. 4. The two recesses 14 in this detailed view are not filled with color material 15 for explanatory purposes. The two recesses 14 are provided in the form of depressions in the first edge section 13a of the card body 10, wherein the depressions are perpendicular to the first card surface 11, i.e. in Fig. 5 from top to bottom or vice versa. In this example, the recesses even extend over the entire thickness of the card body 10, that is, from the first card surface 11 to the Fig. 5 not shown second map surface 12 (cf. Fig. 2).

[0051] The recesses can be defined by respective recess walls 16, which define an outer closure of the card body 10 in the first edge section 13a. The recess walls 16 are designed here similar to a semi-cylindrical surface. A plurality of such recesses or recess walls 16 extending perpendicular to the first and / or second card surface 11, 12 can be provided in the first edge section 13a, or also in the further edge sections 13b, 13c, 13d (cf. Fig. 1) should be provided.

[0052] The recesses 14 can be created, for example, during punching of the card body 10 from a semi-finished product. Alternatively, the recesses 14 can be created after the card body 10 has been punched or separated, for example, by means of a laser, milling, or similar processes. The color material 15 can then be introduced into the recesses 14 (see FIG. Fig. 4). The color material 15 can be applied, for example, by spraying or by using a digital printer with a UV-curing ink system. The color material 15 is then virtually sunk into the recesses 14 and thus better protected against external mechanical influences. The recesses 14 in the Fig. 4 and Fig. 5 are merely examples and can take any form.

[0053] Fig. 6 shows a further top view of the card body 10 from Fig. 1, where a section line through the card body 10 of the card-shaped data carrier 1 is indicated. This section line is intended to indicate a section AA through the card body 10, which in relation to Fig. 7 is explained in more detail.

[0054] Fig. 7 shows the cross-sectional view AA of the card body 10 from Fig. 6. In the cross section AA through the card-shaped data carrier 1, the card body 10, the first card surface 11, the second card surface 12 and one or two recesses 14 are provided.

[0055] In the case of a single recess 14, this recess 14 extends parallel to the first and second card surfaces 11, 12 around the entire card body 10. In the Fig. However, in the cross-section AA shown in Figure 7, the recess 14 can only be seen in the region of the first edge section 13a and in the region of the opposite third edge section 13c. The individual recess 14 is an elongated recess 14 in the form of a depression, groove, furrow, or groove, which extends completely around the peripheral edge 3 of the card body 10 (cf. Fig. 1).

[0056] In the case of multiple recesses 14, the recess 14 shown on the left in the first edge section 13a and the recess 14 shown on the right in the third edge section 13c are two different recesses 14. In this case, therefore, not a single recess 14 extends around the entire circumference of the card body 10.

[0057] In Fig. 7 further shows that the recess 14 provided in the first edge portion 13a is partially filled with color material 15 to provide a viewer with a color effect in the first edge portion 13a. In other words, the viewer can perceive the color introduced by the color material 15 in the recess 14. By countersinking the color material 15 in the recess 14, the color material 15 can be better protected against external influences, in particular against mechanical influences.

[0058] This protection can be ensured by defining the recess 14 by a depressed portion 14a and two protruding portions 14b, wherein the two protruding portions 14b adjoin the depressed portion 14a and the ink material 15 is arranged in the depressed portion 14a. The ink material 15 is thus virtually recessed into the depressed portion 14a, with the adjacent protruding portions 14b providing a type of shielding for the ink material 15 in the depressed portion 14a. For example, if an object such as a card reader is brought close to the card body 10, this object will first or exclusively come into contact with one or both of the protruding portions 14b.The object therefore does not, or at least not completely, penetrate into the recessed part 14a, meaning that the object does not come into contact with the ink material 15, or only to a limited extent, and potentially damages it or dislodges it from the recessed part 14a. Here, too, the ink material 15 can be applied, for example, using a spraying process or a digital printer with a UV-curing ink system. The ink material 15 is then virtually submerged in the recesses 14 and thus better protected against external mechanical influences.

[0059] Fig. 8 shows an exemplary cross section of an edge section of the card body 10 from Fig. 1. This edge portion may be formed by one or more of the first, second, third, or fourth edge portions 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d. The protruding portions 14b and the depressed portion 14a are visible, with the corresponding walls 16 defining the recess 14. The walls 16 may also be referred to as recess walls 16 of the recess 14. In Fig. 8 shows a triangular recess 14 which extends in the edge section between the first and second card surfaces 11, 12.

[0060] Fig. 9 shows a further exemplary cross-section of the edge section of the card body 10 from Fig. 1. This edge portion may be formed by one or more of the first, second, third, or fourth edge portions 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d. The protruding portions 14b and the depressed portion 14a can again be seen, with the corresponding walls 16 defining the recess 14. In Fig. 9 shows a rectangular or groove-shaped recess 14 which extends in the edge section between the first and second card surfaces 11, 12.

[0061] Fig. 10 shows a tool 20 for producing the card body 10 from the Fig. 4 and Fig. 5. The tool 20 may comprise a punch with an embossing surface 22, wherein the embossing surface 22 comprises a plurality of projections 21, protuberances 21 or embossments 21, which ultimately form the shape of the recesses 14, as shown in the Fig. 4 and Fig. 5, in the card body 10. During the manufacturing process, the tool 20 can be moved toward the punched-out card body 10 and then pressed against the edge 13 of the card body 10. For this purpose, the force F indicated by the arrow is applied, whereby the projections 21 are pressed into a portion of the peripheral edge 13 of the card body 10.

[0062] In Fig. Only one side is shown as an example in Figure 10. Four tools 20 can be provided, each of which creates the recesses 14 in one of the edge sections 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d (cf. Fig. 1). However, two tools 20 can also be provided, each positioned in an L-shape around the card body 10 such that one of the two tools 20 creates the recesses 14, for example, in the first edge section 13a and in the second edge section 13b, and the other of the two tools 20 creates the recesses 14, for example, in the third edge section 13c and in the fourth edge section 13d (cf. again Fig. 1).

[0063] During the manufacturing process, the tool 20 can be stationary, and the card body 10 can be rotated toward the tool 20. In this case, the card body 10 is moved toward the tool 20 to create the structure defined by the projections 21 in the form of the recesses 14 in the card body 10. The shape and configuration of the recesses 14 are determined by the tool 20, in particular by the projections 21. Embossing can be performed cold during the manufacturing process, or the tool 20 can be heated or ultrasonically activated. This can facilitate the embossing process.

[0064] Fig. 11 shows a tool 20 for producing the card body 10 from the Fig. 7 and a corresponding cross-section of the tool 20. The tool 20 can have a punch with an embossing surface 22, wherein the embossing surface 22 here has a single projection 23, which ultimately determines the shape of the individual recess 14, as in Fig. 7, is created in the card body 10. During the manufacturing process, the tool 20 can be moved toward the punched-out card body 10 and then pressed against the edge of the card body 10. For this purpose, the force F indicated by the arrow is applied, whereby the projection 23 is pressed into one part of the peripheral edge 13 of the card body 10 (cf. Fig. 1) is pressed in. The projection 23 has an elongated rounded shape, which can be seen in the sectional view BB of the Fig. 11. For example, the projection 23 is semicircular.

[0065] In Fig. 11, only one side of the tool 20 is shown as an example. Four tools 20 can be provided, each of which creates the recesses 14 in the edge sections 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d. However, two tools 20 can also be provided, each of which is positioned in an L-shape around the card body 10 such that one of the two tools 20 creates a first partial section of the recess 14, for example, in the first edge section 13a and in the second edge section 13b, and the other of the two tools 20 creates a second partial section of the recess 14, for example, in the third edge section 13c and in the fourth edge section 13d (cf. again Fig. 1).

[0066] During the manufacturing process, the tool 20 can be stationary, and the card body 10 can be rotated toward the tool 20. In this case, the card body 10 is moved toward the tool 20 to create the structure defined by the projection 23 in the form of the recess 14 in the card body 10. The shape and configuration of the recess 14 are determined by the tool 20, in particular by the projection 23. Embossing can be performed cold during the manufacturing process, or the tool 20 can be heated or ultrasonically activated. This can facilitate the embossing process.

[0067] Fig. 12 shows a flow chart for a method for producing a card-shaped data carrier, for example for producing the card-shaped data carrier 1 from Fig.1. In a step S10 of the method, a card body 10 is provided, which has a first card surface 11, a second card surface 12, and a peripheral edge 13, wherein the peripheral edge 13 connects the first card surface 11 to the second card surface 12. In a step S20 of the method, at least one recess 14 is provided in a first edge portion 13a of the peripheral edge 13. In a step S30 of the method, a color material 15 is introduced into the at least one recess 14 in order to thus provide a color effect for the first edge portion 13a.

[0068] The provision of at least one recess 14 in the first edge portion 13a of the peripheral edge 13 can be effected during punching of the card body 10 from a card semi-finished product.

[0069] The provision of at least one recess 14 in the first edge portion 13a of the peripheral edge 13 can be carried out by means of a laser process or a milling process.

[0070] The introduction of the color material 15 into the at least one recess 14 can be carried out by means of a printing process or a spraying process.
