Abstract
Description
[0001] The invention relates generally to an electronic assembly. In particular, the invention relates to an electronic assembly, especially for a wiring harness of a vehicle, as well as to a method for manufacturing the electronic assembly and to a wiring harness with such an electronic assembly.
[0002] To electrically connect an electrical component or assembly, such as an SMD (surface-mounted device) component, a printed circuit board (PCB) is typically required. To electrically connect a PCB to a vehicle's wiring harness, a connector system is usually needed, which includes a pin header soldered to the PCB and a connector on the wiring harness side.
[0003] An example of this is known from US 2019 / 0306996 A1. US 2019 / 0306996 A1 relates to a device comprising an electronic assembly and a housing. The electronic assembly includes a sensor module mounted on or encapsulated within a substrate. The housing generally has a sensor cavity configured to receive the electronic assembly, a connector cavity configured to connect to a wiring harness connector, a wall separating the sensor cavity and the connector cavity, and a plurality of terminals with a first end extending from the wall into the sensor cavity and a second end extending from the wall into the connector cavity. The first end of each terminal is generally configured to form an electrical and mechanical connection with a corresponding conductive pad of the substrate.
[0004] Recently, attempts have been made to eliminate the need for PCBs in such connections.
[0005] Such an approach is known from US 2019 / 0305491 A1. US 2019 / 0305491 A1 relates to a device comprising a sensor package, a housing, and one or more connectors. The housing includes a first cavity configured to receive the sensor package, a second cavity configured to receive an electrical connector, and a wall separating the cavities. In the first cavity, the ends of the connectors are soldered to the sensor package. In the second cavity, an electrical connection is made between the connectors and a vehicle wiring harness.
[0006] There is a need for an improved approach to providing an electronic assembly, particularly for a vehicle wiring harness, as well as for providing a method for manufacturing such an assembly. Furthermore, there is a need for a wiring harness incorporating such an assembly.
[0007] According to a first aspect, an electronic assembly, particularly for a vehicle wiring harness, is proposed. The electronic assembly comprises an electronic component, a housing, at least two pin contacts, and at least two contact elements. The housing has a recess. The recess is configured to receive the electronic component. The at least two pin contacts are at least partially embedded in the housing. The at least two pin contacts are connected to the electronic component. The at least two contact elements are, at least partially, embedded in the housing, forming a positive-locking connection with the housing. Each of the at least two contact elements is configured to make contact, at least partially, with one of the at least two pin contacts. The at least two contact elements are connectable to, or connected to, at least one conductor at one end.
[0008] In the finished electronic assembly, the electronic component is mounted in the housing's recess. The at least two contact elements can each be connected, for example, to at least one wire at one of their respective ends.
[0009] The at least two contact elements are each configured to make contact, at least partially, with one of the at least two pin contacts. In the area where contact exists between the at least two contact elements and the at least two pin contacts, the contacting parts of the at least two contact elements and the at least two pin contacts can connect, particularly in a common space. This common space is not, for example, divided into a separate area for the pin contacts and a separate area for the contact elements.
[0010] The electronic assembly allows for the simple integration of an electronic component. It also provides a straightforward connection between the electronic component and wiring, particularly a wiring harness. The electronic assembly can thus function simultaneously as a connector for connecting both an electronic component and wiring, for example, as a wiring harness connector for connecting an electronic component to a vehicle's wiring harness. This provides a (highly) integrated component for connecting an electronic component to wiring, such as a wiring harness. An additional connector housing for connecting the at least one wire is not required.
[0011] The at least two pin contacts are connected to the electronic component. This connection can be understood to be, in particular, an electrical connection. It can also be understood to be a mechanical connection. The mechanical connection of the at least two pin contacts to the electronic component can lead to an electrical connection between the at least two pin contacts and the electronic component.
[0012] The at least two contact elements are each configured to make contact, at least partially, with one of the at least two pin contacts. The contact between the at least two contact elements and the respective pin contact can be understood to be, in particular, an electrical contact. The contact between the at least two contact elements and the respective pin contact can also be understood to be a mechanical contact. The mechanical contact between the at least two contact elements and the at least two pin contacts can each lead to an electrical contact between the at least two contact elements and the at least two pin contacts.
[0013] The pin contacts can be designed to correspond to the pin contacts of a pin header. A pin header is a connector with several pin contacts arranged in a series, sometimes in multiple rows.
[0014] The electronic component can include a sensor element or be designed as a sensor element. The sensor element can, for example, include an NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) element for temperature measurement or be designed as an NTC element for temperature measurement.
[0015] The at least one conductor can be a conductor in a wiring harness or within a vehicle's wiring harness. The at least one conductor can also be referred to as an electrical conductor. Each conductor can have at least one electrically conductive core. Each conductor can have at least one layer of insulation. The at least one conductor can have one or more cores through which energy and / or information can be transmitted. Several conductors or cables form the wiring harness. The wiring harness can also be referred to as a wiring box, cable set, or vehicle electrical system. A vehicle's wiring harness typically connects several, in particular all, electrical and / or electronic components (e.g., drives, actuators, sensors, displays, control units, power sources, etc.) within the vehicle.
[0016] The electronic component can be connected to the at least two pin contacts via a material-bonded connection. This material-bonded connection can, for example, be a soldered joint or be designed as a soldered joint. For instance, the electronic component can be a surface-mount device (SMD). SMD components can typically be soldered directly onto a circuit board or onto copper pads or copper leads, etc. SMD components usually have solderable pads or leads for this purpose. Accordingly, the electronic component can have solderable pads or leads. These solderable pads or leads can be soldered to the at least two pin contacts. In particular, each of the at least two pin contacts can be soldered to a corresponding terminal pad or connecting leg. The housing can be made of plastic or be designed as a plastic housing.
[0017] The at least two contact elements can each be configured to establish a detachable contact, at least partially, with one of the at least two pin contacts. The detachable contact can also be referred to as a detachable connection. A detachable contact / connection can be understood, in particular, to mean that the detachable contact / connection and / or elements or components connected via the detachable contact / connection can be detached with normal force and / or without damage. Detachable contacts / connections can, in effect, be separated and reattached without damaging or destroying the connected components. Detachable contacts / connections comprise components that can be separated and reassembled without destroying the connected components and at least one connecting element.
[0018] The at least two contact elements can each be configured to surround at least the at least two pin contacts, at least partially. The at least two contact elements can each be configured to surround the at least two pin contacts, at least partially, such that at least one section of each pin contact and at least one section of each contact element are in contact with each other. The at least one section can, for example, extend at least partially, and in particular completely, in the circumferential direction of the at least two pin contacts. The at least one section can, for example, extend along a portion of the at least two pin contacts in the longitudinal direction of the at least two pin contacts. The at least two contact elements can each have one or more crimp contacts or be configured as one or more crimp contacts.
[0019] The at least two pin contacts can be received, at least partially, without play in at least two at least nearly columnar recesses in the housing. For example, a first section of the at least two pin contacts can be received without play in the at least two at least nearly columnar recesses in the housing. The first section can also be referred to as the fixing section or fixing area of the pin contacts, since in this section the pin contacts are fixed in the recesses or by side walls around the recesses (due to the lack of play). A columnar shape can be understood here as a shape that extends from a base surface of any two-dimensional shape, across a lateral surface, to another base surface of any two-dimensional shape. The lateral surface can have interruptions and / or can assume different shapes. The cross-section of the at least two at least nearly columnar recesses can be round, in particular circular, oval, or elliptical, or angular, in particular rectangular, square, or polygonal. A combination of a round and an angular cross-section is also conceivable. For example, the columnar recesses can be designed as at least nearly cuboid or cylindrical recesses, or as a combination thereof.
[0020] The at least two pin contacts can be received, at least partially, by a clearance in the at least two at least nearly columnar recesses in the housing. For example, a second section of the at least two pin contacts can be received, at least partially, by a clearance in the at least two at least nearly columnar recesses in the housing. The first section of the at least two pin contacts and the second section of the at least two pin contacts can have different circumferences or diameters.
[0021] The at least two at least nearly columnar recesses can each have at least two sections with different circumferences or diameters. For example, a first section of the at least two at least nearly columnar recesses can have a different circumference or diameter than a second section of the at least two at least nearly columnar recesses. The first section can be located closer to the electronic component than the second section. The first section can have a smaller circumference or diameter than the second section.
[0022] The at least two contact elements can, for example, be accommodated along their entire length in the housing, in particular in the at least two almost column-shaped recesses.
[0023] The at least two contact elements can be received, at least partially, in the at least two at least nearly columnar recesses in the housing. For example, the circumference or diameter of the at least two contact elements can be larger than the circumference or diameter of the at least two pin contacts. For example, the at least two contact elements can be received, at least almost completely, in the aforementioned second section of the at least two at least nearly columnar recesses. Each of the at least two pin contacts and each of the at least two contact elements can be arranged in the same of the at least two columnar recesses, in particular without being separated from each other by a wall or other partition.
[0024] The at least two contact elements can each have a locking element. The locking element can, for example, be designed as a latching or snapping element. The housing can have at least one locking opening. The respective locking element can be designed and arranged to form a positive-locking connection with the locking opening of the housing. For example, the respective latching element can be designed and arranged to engage with the locking opening of the housing to form the positive-locking connection. For example, the respective snapping element can be designed and arranged to snap into the locking opening of the housing to form the positive-locking connection.
[0025] The housing may have at least one inspection opening. This inspection opening may be located in an area where an end portion of the contact elements lies, provided the contact elements are fully inserted into the recesses. This allows verification through the inspection opening that the contact elements and pin contacts are in contact with each other as intended.
[0026] According to a second aspect, a method for manufacturing an electronic assembly, in particular for a vehicle wiring harness, is proposed. The method comprises receiving an electronic component, in particular a sensor element, in a receptacle of a housing. The method comprises receiving at least two pin contacts in the housing, at least partially. The method comprises connecting the at least two pin contacts to the electronic component. The method comprises receiving at least two contact elements in the housing, at least partially, forming a positive connection with the housing. The method comprises establishing contact, at least partially, between each of the at least two pin contacts and each of the at least two contact elements. The method involves connecting at least two contact elements at one end to at least one conductor each.
[0027] The electronic assembly is specifically designed like the electronic assembly according to the first aspect.
[0028] The process of integrating the at least two pin contacts into the housing can involve overmolding the at least two pin contacts with a material forming the housing. The material can, in particular, be a plastic or contain plastic components. Alternatively, the process of integrating the at least two pin contacts into the housing can involve inserting, in particular sliding or shooting, at least two pin contacts into the housing. In this case as well, the housing can be made of a plastic or contain plastic components.
[0029] Connecting the at least two pin contacts to the electronic component may involve soldering the at least two pin contacts to the electronic component.
[0030] The establishment of contact, at least in sections, between each of the at least two pin contacts and each of the at least two contact elements can include the establishment of a releasable contact between each of the at least two pin contacts and each of the at least two contact elements.
[0031] The establishment of contact, at least in sections, between each of the at least two pin contacts and each of the at least two contact elements can include sliding the at least two contact elements onto the at least two pin contacts.
[0032] The partial insertion of the at least two contact elements into the housing, forming a positive-locking connection with the housing, can include inserting the at least two contact elements into the housing. The partial insertion of the at least two contact elements into the housing, forming a positive-locking connection with the housing, can also include snapping or locking the at least two contact elements into the housing.
[0033] According to a third aspect, a wiring harness for a vehicle is proposed. The wiring harness has several wires. The wiring harness has at least one electronic assembly according to the first aspect.
[0034] The wiring harness can include at least one connected power source, such as a low-voltage power source or high-voltage power supply. The wiring harness can include multiple connected electrical and / or electronic components, such as sensors and / or actuators. In particular, the wiring harness may be intended for low-voltage applications, e.g., for signals and supply voltages in applications such as break-by-wire, axle wiring harnesses, etc.
[0035] The wiring harness can include a multitude of electronic assemblies as described in the first aspect. In other words, a multitude of electronic assemblies can be provided within the wiring harness. The electronic assemblies as described in the first aspect can be at least partially identical and / or at least partially different. More precisely, the electronic assemblies as described in the first aspect can contain at least some identical electronic components and at least some different electronic components within their respective housings. The wiring harness can include a multitude of wires. At least one wire can be arranged on each of the multiple electronic assemblies.
[0036] Even though some of the aspects described above have been described in relation to the electronic assembly according to the first aspect, these aspects may also be realized in a corresponding manner in the procedure according to the second aspect and / or the wiring harness according to the third aspect, and vice versa.
[0037] The present invention will be further explained with reference to figures. These figures schematically illustrate: Fig. 1 a top side of an electronic assembly according to an exemplary embodiment; Fig. 2. A perspective view of the top side of an electronic assembly according to the embodiment shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3. Perspective view of a bottom side of an electronic assembly according to the embodiment shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 a perspective view of an electronic assembly according to the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 without case. Fig. 5a to 5d Process steps for manufacturing an electronic assembly according to the embodiment from Fig. 1 in a top view.
[0038] In Fig. Figure 1 schematically shows a top view of an electronic assembly 1 according to an exemplary embodiment in a semi-transparent representation. The semi-transparent representation allows an internal view through the top of the electronic assembly 1.
[0039] The electronic assembly 1 is particularly suitable for use in or with a wiring harness of a vehicle. The electronic assembly 1 comprises an electronic component 20. The electronic component 20 is designed with respect to Fig. Figure 1 and the following figures are designed as an example sensor element and are therefore also referred to as sensor element 20 in the following. According to one example, the sensor element 20 can be designed as an SMD component. The electronic assembly 1 has a housing 10 with a receptacle 12 (see Figure 1). Fig. 3) The receptacle 12 is designed to accommodate the sensor element 20. As with regard to the Fig. 1, Fig. 2 to Fig. As can be seen in 3, the recording 12, for example, penetrates the housing 10 completely and is therefore visible from both the top (see Fig. 1 and Fig. 2) as well as from the underside (see Fig. 3) accessible.
[0040] The electronic assembly 1, in the embodiment shown in the figures, has exactly two pin contacts 30 as an example that at least two pin contacts 30 can be provided. The pin contacts 30 are housed in the casing 10. The pin contacts 30 are connected to the sensor element 20. As shown in Fig. As can be seen in Figure 3, the pin contacts 30 are completely covered by the back of the housing 10, except for any openings. As shown in Figure 3. Fig. 1 and Fig. As can be seen in Figure 2, the pin contacts 30 protrude from the top of the housing 10 in a front area. The sensor element 20 is located in this front area where the pin contacts 30 project from the top of the housing 10. This area can also be referred to as the connection area between the sensor element 20 and the pin contacts 30, or simply as the connection area.
[0041] In the embodiment shown in the figures, the electronic assembly 1 has exactly two contact elements 40 as an example that at least two contact elements 40 can be provided. The two contact elements 40 are at least partially enclosed in the housing 10. As shown in Fig. As can be seen in Figure 1, the two contact elements 40 in the example shown are completely enclosed in the housing 10. The two contact elements 40 form a positive-locking connection with the housing 10. Each of the two contact elements 40 is designed to form at least partial contact with one of the two pin contacts 30. In other words, at least one section of the two contact elements 40 and at least one section of the two pin contacts 30 are in contact with each other. The two contact elements 40 can each be connected to a conductor 100 at one end and are located in the housing 10. Fig. The example shown is connected. Line 100 is, for example, a line from a vehicle's wiring harness.
[0042] The sensor element 20 is connected to the two pin contacts 30 via a metallurgical connection in the connection area. In the example shown in the figures, the sensor element 20 is connected to the two pin contacts 30 via a soldered connection. More precisely, lateral contact surfaces of the sensor element are soldered to the pin contacts 30. In this way, an electrical and mechanical connection is established between the sensor element 20 and the two pin contacts 30.
[0043] As in Fig. As can be seen from Figure 1, the two contact elements 40 each surround at least partially one of the two pin contacts 30. This brings at least one section of each of the two pin contacts 30 and at least one section of each of the two contact elements 40 into contact with each other. In this way, an electrical connection / contact is established between each of the pin contacts 30 and the contact element 40 surrounding the respective pin contact 30. This establishes an electrical connection from the sensor element 20, via the pin contacts 30 and the contact elements 40, to the conductors 100.
[0044] In Fig. Figure 2 (also a semi-transparent illustration) shows two column-shaped recesses 14 in the housing 10 as an example that at least two such recesses 14 can be provided in the housing. As further shown in Fig. As can be seen in Figure 2, the two pin contacts 30 are received without play, at least in sections, in the two at least nearly column-shaped recesses 14 in the housing. In the embodiment shown in the figures, the two pin contacts 30 are received without play in the two recesses 14 in a front section SF, i.e., in a section oriented towards the sensor element 20. At the same time, the two pin contacts 30 are received with some play, at least in sections, in the two at least nearly column-shaped recesses 14 in the housing 10. In the embodiment shown in the figures, the two pin contacts 30 are received with some play in the two recesses 14 in a rear section SP, i.e., in a section oriented away from the sensor element 20. This is made possible by the fact that the two recesses 14 do not have the same circumference or diameter throughout. In the example shown, the front section SF of the two recesses 14 has a smaller circumference or diameter than the rear section SP. More precisely, the front section SF of the two recesses 14 has a circumference or diameter that is adapted or matched to the circumference or diameter of the two pin contacts 30. Even more precisely, the front section SF of the two recesses 14 has a circumference or diameter that is at least approximately equal to the circumference or diameter of the two pin contacts 30. In contrast, the rear section SP has a larger circumference or diameter than the two pin contacts 30.
[0045] The two contact elements 40 are, as in Fig. 1, at least partially, are incorporated into the two at least nearly column-shaped recesses 14 in the housing 10. The embodiment shown in the figures illustrates, by way of example, how in Fig. As can be seen in Figure 1, the two contact elements are received along their entire length in the two recesses 14. In particular, the contact elements 40 extend in the housing 10 along the rear section SP. The circumference or diameter of the contact elements 40 is matched to the circumference or diameter of the recesses 14 in the rear section SP such that the contact elements 40 can be received in the recesses 14. For example, the circumference or diameter and / or the cross-sectional shape of the contact elements 40 is minimally smaller than the circumference or diameter and / or the cross-sectional shape of the recesses 14 in the rear section SP.
[0046] As in Fig. As can be seen in Figure 1, the two contact elements 40 each have a locking element 46. In the illustrated embodiment, the housing 10 has two locking openings 16. The locking element 46 of each contact element 40 forms a positive connection with the corresponding locking opening 16 when it is located within the area of the corresponding locking opening 16. This is the case, for example, when the contact elements 40 have been inserted as far as possible or completely into the corresponding recesses 14, e.g., pushed in. Examples with one locking opening and with more than two locking openings are also conceivable.
[0047] In Fig. Figure 4 shows an example in which each of the locking elements 46 is implemented as a snap element 46. Each snap element 46 can be guided under tension in the associated recess 14. When the respective snap element 46 is in the area of its associated locking opening 16, the snap element 46 can snap open due to the tension and engage in the locking opening 16. The two contact elements 40 are thus held in the recesses 14 by a positive-locking connection formed between the respective snap element 46 and the associated locking opening 16.
[0048] Furthermore, an inspection opening 18 is provided in the housing 10 (see Fig. 1 and Fig. 2) The inspection opening 18 is located closer to the sensor element 20 compared to the locking openings 16. Instead of just one inspection opening 18, several inspection openings can also be provided. The inspection opening 18 allows for verification of correct contact between the pin contacts 30 and the contact elements 40. In the example shown, the locking opening 18 is located in the area where the contact elements 40 are situated when they are fully inserted into the recesses 14.
[0049] Regarding the Fig. 5a to 5d describes a method for manufacturing an electronic assembly according to Fig. 1 described. In a first step, S502, which is in Fig. As illustrated in Figure 5a, the pin contacts 30 are accommodated in the housing 10. The accommodation of the two pin contacts 30 in the housing 10 can be carried out in various ways. For example, the two pin contacts 30 can be overmolded with a material forming the housing 10. Alternatively, the housing 10 can be manufactured using an injection molding process, and then the two pin contacts 30 can be inserted, slid, or shot into the housing 10. In a second step S504, which is shown in Fig. As shown in Figure 5b, the sensor element 20 is inserted into a receptacle 12 of the housing 10. Steps S502 and S504 can also be performed in reverse order. For example, the housing 10 can first be manufactured by injection molding. Then, the sensor element 20 can be inserted into the receptacle 12 of the housing 10. Subsequently, or simultaneously, the pin contacts can be inserted into the housing 10.
[0050] In step S506, the two pin contacts 30 are connected to the sensor element 20. The connection is made by a metallurgical bond. For example, the two pin contacts 30 are soldered to the sensor element 20. Alternatively, two contact surfaces of the sensor element 20, e.g., two tinned solder pads of the sensor element 20, are soldered to the pin contacts 30 using a suitable soldering process, such as laser soldering, or conversely, the pin contacts 30 are soldered to the contact surfaces of the sensor element 20. It is also conceivable to first connect the sensor element 20 to the pin contacts 30 as described, e.g., by soldering, and then to overmold the assembly of sensor element 20 and pin contacts 30 with the housing, e.g., using a plastic injection molding process. This creates a suitable plastic housing around the assembly consisting of sensor element 20 and soldered pin contacts 30.
[0051] In step S508, which is in Fig. As can be seen in Figure 5d, the at least two contact elements 40 are received at least partially in the housing 10, forming a positive-locking connection with the housing 10. The positive-locking connection is formed as described in Figure 5d. Fig. 4 described, for example by snapping the snap elements 46 into the locking openings 16. This creates, at least section by section, a contact between each of the two pin contacts 30 and each of the two contact elements 40 in step S508. Furthermore, the contact between the two pin contacts 30 and the corresponding contact element 40 is releasable, i.e., a releasable contact is provided. As in Fig. As shown in Figure 5d, the two contact elements 40 are pushed onto the two pin contacts 30. The contact elements 40 can have crimped socket contacts. To position the contact elements 40 correctly so that the positive locking connection can be formed, the contact elements 40 have a Fig. 5d Each stop element 42 engages, which, when the contact elements 40 are inserted, abuts counter-stops provided in the recesses 14. The contact between the respective stop element 42 and the corresponding counter-stop in the respective recess 14 blocks further insertion of the contact elements 40. This ensures correct positioning of the contact elements 40 in the recesses.
[0052] In a step not shown, the two contact elements 40 are connected at one end to at least one line 100 each. This connection can be made before or after step S508. Fig. In step 5d, the conductors 100 are already connected to their associated contact elements 40. This means that, in this case, the conductors 100 were connected to the contact elements 40 before the contact elements 40 were inserted into the housing 10.
[0053] With the help of the in relation to Fig.The process steps described in sections 5a to 5d make it possible to process the electronic assembly 1 in a production line in a nearly fully automated manner and to assemble it with cables 100 or a cable set. In particular, an integrated electronic assembly 1 can be automatically connected to cables 100 / a cable set, both mechanically and electrically, in a single operation. This simplifies and / or accelerates the connection of electronic components, such as the sensor element 20, to cables 100 or cable sets. Depending on the specific application, the outer contour of the housing 10, for example, the plastic housing, can also be adapted to the surrounding environment. For example, fastening elements, such as clips, can be provided on the housing 10 to allow it to be attached, for example, clipped, to a desired location.
[0054] In the electronic assembly 1 described herein, a printed circuit board (PCB) can be omitted / saved. This reduces material and / or manufacturing effort and / or manufacturing costs. Furthermore, a connector housing on the cables / wiring harness can be omitted. This also reduces material and / or manufacturing effort and / or manufacturing costs.
