The invention relates to a charging cable (100) which has: -- a first and second connector (110, 120) and a connecting line (130) with at least two electrical conductors (P, N, PE); -- a disconnect switch (140) having an open position in which at least one of the conductors (P, N, PE) is interrupted; -- a fault signal line (150), wherein the charging cable (100) is configured to bring the disconnect switch (140) into the open position when a fault signal is present on the fault signal line (150); -- a fault current sensor (170) wherein the charging cable (100) is configured to apply a fault signal to the fault signal line (150) when a fault current is detected between the electrical conductors (P, N, PE); -- a computing unit (180) configured to move the disconnect switch (140) to the open position via a control line (190) when the computing unit (180) detects a fault, wherein the at least one control line (190) is different from the fault signal line (150), wherein the charging cable (100) is configured to apply a fault signal to the fault signal line (150) when a physical quantity has an impermissible value, wherein the computing unit (180) is configured to test at least one sensor (200, 201, 202, 203) for the physical quantity and to detect a fault in the charging cable (100) when the test indicates a faulty sensor.
