AI Technical Summary
Technical Problem
Color imaging systems in barcode readers and scanners require additional processing time and resources to convert color images to grayscale, leading to inefficient and inaccurate barcode decoding.
Method used
A method to directly generate grayscale images from color pixel data using a color image sensor, determining grayscale values from a neighborhood of pixels, such as a weighted sum of red, green, and blue pixel values, without intermediate color image conversion.
Benefits of technology

Abstract
Method and system for performing grayscale image generation. The method involves acquiring, by means of a color image sensor, color information from an environment within the field of view of an imaging assembly. The color image sensor comprises a plurality of color pixels, each configured to acquire specific color information from the environment. Each pixel in the array has a different detection spectrum than its nearby neighbors. A processor determines a grayscale value for each pixel in the plurality of color pixels, the grayscale value being derived from color information from a two-by-two array of pixels in the color image sensor. The processor then generates a grayscale image from the grayscale values for each pixel.
