Technical field
[0001] The present disclosure relates to machine tools, such as rotary tools. background
[0002] Power tools, such as rotary tools, are a popular tool among professional tradespeople, DIY enthusiasts, homeowners, and hobbyists. The typical rotary tool is a handheld power tool configured for use with a variety of accessory bits / tools that can be used for cutting, engraving, grinding, polishing, and many other applications collectively referred to as cutting operations. A specific example of a rotary tool is the DREMEL® rotary tool, distributed by the Robert Bosch Tool Corporation.
[0003] Many rotary tools incorporate a collet assembly coupled to the drive shaft of an electric motor. The collet assembly is configurable to couple or uncouple an accessory bit to the electric motor's drive shaft. The electric motor is operated to rotate the collet assembly and any coupled accessory bit. The accessory bit can be removed and replaced with another if it becomes unusable or if the user wishes to perform a different cutting operation. Typically, a collet tool is provided to loosen or tighten the collet assembly. The DREMEL® EZ Twist™ nose cap can be used as such a collet tool. The EZ Twist™ nose cap also provides a secure grip on the rotary tool near its accessory bit. The EZ Twist™ nose cap features an integrated wrench for quick accessory changes. It's always handy because it's already attached to the tool. It can be used on all rotary tools with a suitable threaded nose piece. Its soft grip provides added comfort.

[0023] The Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 3 and Fig. Figure 4 shows a rotary tool 10. The rotary tool 10 can have a handle part 12 extending away from the rotary tool 10, as shown in Fig. The rotary tool 10 is indicated by a dashed line. Instead of the depicted rotary tool 10, the disclosure can also refer to another machine tool, such as an oscillating tool, a saw, a brush, a drill, a screwdriver, a drill driver, a hammer drill, or a wrench. The rotary tool 10 comprises a housing part 14 extending along an axial direction 16. The housing part 14 can be the entire housing, as shown. It can also be part of a larger housing, as may be the case with a machine tool such as an angle drill or a drill driver. The rotary tool 10 contains a motor 18 (dashed box) with a drive shaft 20. The motor 18, and thus the rotary tool 10, is activated by a trigger 22.The rotary tool 10 further comprises a nose piece 24 that projects from the housing part 14 at a first axial end 26 of the rotary tool 10. The rotary tool 10 also includes a spindle 28 that is attached to the drive shaft 20. [0024] A nose cap 32 is detachably attached to the nose piece 24. The spindle 28 projects further from the nose cap 32. The nose cap 32 extends in an axial direction 16 and has an axis 34 running along the axial direction 16. The axis 34 is in line with the axis of rotation 30 of the spindle 28. The nose cap 32 is generally cylindrical in shape. For improved grip, the nose cap 32 may have a grip section 36 on its outer surface. The grip section 36 may have a smaller diameter in the middle and a larger diameter at the longitudinal ends of the nose cap 32.
[0025] The nose cap 32 is attached to the nose piece 24 by rotating it in a first direction 38. The nose cap 32 is removed from the nose piece 24 by rotating it in a second direction 40 opposite to the first direction 38. An electrically operated work light 42 is integrated into the nose cap 32 and is powered by an energy source of the rotary tool 10. The energy source is integrated into the rotary tool 10 and is activated by the trigger 22. This energy source also powers the motor 18 of the rotary tool 10. The work light 42 illuminates a work area in front of the rotary tool. The work light 42 is located on an end face of the nose cap 32 that extends transversely to the axial direction 16. [0029] The electrical connection 44 defines contact surfaces that extend transversely to the axial direction 16. These contact surfaces are arranged at a radial distance from the axis 34. The contact surfaces are therefore not mating in the sense that a plug is inserted into a socket with a movement along or parallel to the axial direction 16.The contact surfaces comprise a first pin extending in the axial direction 16, and a second pin extending in the axial direction 16, and a corresponding first contact surface 52 and a corresponding second contact surface 54, the first pin being aligned with the first contact surface 52, and the second pin being aligned with the second contact surface 54, when the first nose cap terminal 46 is brought into electrically conductive contact with the first housing terminal 58 and the second nose cap terminal 48 is brought into electrically conductive contact with the second housing terminal 60.
[0030] The first and second pins, or the first contact surface 52 and the second contact surface 54, are spring-loaded in the axial direction 16. The first contact surface 52 and the second contact surface 54 are flat. The first nose cap connection 46 and the second nose cap connection 48 are arranged on a first nose cap side 50, which extends transversely to the axial direction 16 and faces the housing part 14. The first conductive element 66 and the second conductive element 68 extend in an axial direction 16 through the nose cap 32 and are connected to the work light 42 or any other electrically operated arrangement, as shown in Fig. Figure 2 shows that the first conductive element 66 and the second conductive element 68 extend between the first nose cap side 50 and the nose cap front side 70 opposite the first nose cap side 50. The conductive elements 66, 68 are shorter in the longitudinal direction than the nose cap 32 along the axial direction 16. They can be manufactured as stamped and bent parts.
[0033] To retrofit existing rotary tools or other tools, a ring arrangement with a first housing-side connection and a second housing-side connection could be arranged on the end face of a rotary tool or other machine tool.
[0034] The Fig. 5, Fig. 6 and Fig. Figure 7 shows a second embodiment of a nose cap. The nose cap connections have a different orientation. Instead of two axial contacts on the same surface, there is only one axial contact and one radial contact.
[0035] The Fig. 8, Fig. 9 and Fig. Figure 10 shows a further embodiment of a rotary tool 10' and a nose cap 32'. Parts comprising parts of the Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 of the first embodiment have the same reference numerals. Modified parts have the suffix '. Instead of the illustrated rotary tool 10', the disclosure may also refer to another machine tool, such as an oscillating tool, a saw, a brush, a drill, a screwdriver, a drill driver, a hammer drill, or a wrench. The rotary tool 10' comprises a housing part 14' extending along an axial direction 16. The housing part 14' can be the entire housing, as shown. It can also be part of a larger housing, as may be the case with a machine tool such as an angle drill or a drill driver. The rotary tool 10' contains a motor with a drive shaft 20. The motor, and thus the rotary tool 10', is actuated by a trigger similar to that described in Fig.1 activated. The rotary tool 10' further comprises a nose piece 24 which projects from the housing part 14' at a first axial end 26 of the rotary tool 10'. The rotary tool 10' further comprises a spindle 28 which is attached to the drive shaft 20. The spindle 28 defines an axis of rotation 30 which extends along the axial direction 16 and projects from the nose piece 24.
[0036] The nose cap 32' is detachably attached to the nose piece 24. The spindle 28 projects further from the nose cap 32. The nose cap 32' extends in an axial direction 16 and has an axis 34 running along the axial direction 16. The axis 34 is in line with the axis of rotation 30 of the spindle 28. The nose cap 32' is generally cylindrical in shape. For improved grip, the nose cap 32' may have a grip section 36 on its outer surface. The grip section 36 may have a smaller diameter in the middle and a larger diameter at the longitudinal ends of the nose cap 32'.
[0037] The nose cap 32' is attached to and removed from the nose piece 24 by twisting it in the same way as the nose cap 32' of the first embodiment. A work light 42 is also powered by a power source of the rotary tool 10'. Instead of a work light 42, the nose cap 32' can also be part of a laser, an extraction system, or a fan. The nose cap 32' can contain or power another electrically operated device, such as the aforementioned laser, extraction system, or fan.
[0038] The rotary tool 10' further comprises an electrical connection 44 between the nose cap 32' and the housing part 14'. The electrical connection 44 is closed by rotating the nose cap 32' in a first direction of rotation 38. The electrical connection 44 is opened by rotating the nose cap 32' in a second direction of rotation 40.
[0039] The electrical connection 44 comprises a first nose cap terminal 46' and a second nose cap terminal 48', which are arranged on the nose cap 32'. The first nose cap terminal 46' and the second nose cap terminal 48' extend transversely to the axial direction 16. The first nose cap terminal 46' and the second nose cap terminal 48' are arranged on a first nose cap. The first nose cap terminal 46' comprises a first contact surface 52', and the second nose cap terminal 48' comprises a second contact surface 54'. The contact surfaces 52', 54' can be arranged at a radial distance from a central axis 34 of the nose cap 32'. They can be arranged at the same distance or at different distances. They are therefore radially spaced from the central axis 34. The first contact surface 52' is arranged opposite the second contact surface 54'. This results in an angle of 180 degrees. You can also look at it from a different angle, e.g.The first contact surface 52' and the second contact surface 54' may be arranged at 90 degrees. They may be tapered and extend in the axial direction 16 towards the housing part 14'. The first contact surface 52' and the second contact surface 54' may also be rounded or flat.
[0040] The electrical connection 44 further comprises a first housing terminal 58' and a second housing terminal 60', which are arranged on the housing part 14'. The first housing terminal 58' and the second housing terminal 60' are flat. The first nose cap terminal 46' is brought into electrically conductive contact with the first housing terminal 58', and the second nose cap terminal 48' is brought into electrically conductive contact with the second housing terminal 60', by rotating the nose cap 32' in the first direction of rotation 38. The first nose cap terminal 46' is removed from electrically conductive contact with the first housing terminal 58', and the second nose cap terminal 48' is removed from electrically conductive contact with the second housing terminal 60', by rotating the nose cap 32' in the second direction of rotation 40.The first housing port 58' is wider than the first nose cap port 46', and the second housing port 60' is wider than the second nose cap port 48'.
[0041] The electrical connection 44 defines contact surfaces that extend transversely to the axial direction 16. These contact surfaces are arranged at a radial distance from the axis 34. The contact surfaces are therefore not mating in the sense that a plug is inserted into a socket with a movement along or parallel to the axial direction 16. The contact surfaces comprise a first pin extending in the axial direction 16 (formed by the tapered first contact surface 52') and a second pin extending in the axial direction 16 (formed by the tapered second contact surface 54'), as well as a corresponding first nose cap terminal 46' and a corresponding second nose cap terminal 48'. The first pin is aligned with the first housing terminal 58', and the second pin is aligned with the second housing terminal 60'.The first nose cap terminal 46' is thus brought into electrically conductive contact with the first housing terminal 58', and the second nose cap terminal 48' is brought into electrically conductive contact with the second housing terminal 60'.
[0042] The first pin or contact surface 52' and the second pin or contact surface 54' are spring-loaded in the axial direction 16. The first nose cap connection 46' and the second nose cap connection 48' are arranged on a first nose cap side that extends transversely to the axial direction 16 and faces the housing part 14'. [0043] The nosepiece 24 has an external threaded portion 62, and the nose cap 32' has an internal threaded portion 64 that corresponds to the external threaded portion 62 of the nosepiece 24. The external threaded portion 62 and the internal threaded portion 64 are oriented at an angle about the axis 34 such that the first housing terminal 58' is in electrically conductive contact with the first nose cap terminal 46' and the second housing terminal 60' is in electrically conductive contact with the second nose cap terminal 48' when the electrical connection 44 is closed. Alternatively, the nose cap 32' and the nosepiece 24 can form a bayonet connection.
[0044] The first nose cap terminal 46' has a first conductive element 66', and the second nose cap terminal 48' has a second conductive element 68'. The first conductive element 66' and the second conductive element 68' extend in an axial direction 16 through the nose cap 32' and are connected to the work light 42 or any other electrically operated arrangement. The first conductive element 66' and the second conductive element 68' extend between the first nose cap side and the nose cap front 70 opposite the first nose cap side. The conductive elements 66', 68' may be shorter in the longitudinal direction than the nose cap 32 along the axial direction 16. They may also be manufactured as stamped or bent parts.
