AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Micro gas turbines with external heating face efficiency losses when external gas, typically exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, is mixed with compressed air, as it compromises the efficiency of the internal combustion engine.

Method used

The proposed arrangement heats compressed air using a recuperator without mixing it with exhaust gases, and the heated air drives the turbine, optionally connected to an independent generator or the internal combustion engine.

Benefits of technology

Improves the efficiency of the internal combustion engine by maintaining its overall efficiency without compromising it, and allows for independent power generation.

Description

[0001] Micro gas turbines are known to be heated via their own combustion chamber [Figure 1], and micro gas turbines with external heating, where the external hot gas is mixed with the compressed gas [Figure 2]. Micro gas turbines with heating often have a recuperator to improve efficiency [Figure 3]. In micro gas turbines with external heating, the external gas must have approximately the same pressure as the gas supplied by the compressor. If the external gas is the exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, the efficiency of the internal combustion engine will be impaired.

[0002] The proposed arrangement is suitable for improving the efficiency of an internal combustion engine without compromising its overall efficiency [Figure 4]. The exhaust gases are not mixed with the compressed air, but they do heat the compressed air. The compressed air, heated by the recuperator, drives the turbine. The proposed arrangement can have its own generator or be mechanically connected to the internal combustion engine [Figure 5]. The compressor can be driven by its own electric motor [Figure 6].
