FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a piece of furniture, in particular a sofa or lounge sofa, with an adjustable backrest. The backrest is adjustable to extend the seating section of the piece of furniture. BACKGROUND
[0002] In today's fast-paced environment, the demand for versatile and comfortable home furnishings has become increasingly critical. Modern households require furniture that not only serves multiple functions but also enhances the overall living experience. While traditional sofas offer a simple seating option, they often lack the adaptability to provide customizable comfort levels or maximize space efficiency.
[0003] Adjustable backrests in sofas are well-known in the art, but existing solutions often suffer from significant drawbacks. Many contain complex mechanisms requiring numerous components, making their manufacturing, installation, and maintenance difficult. Others feature adjustable backrests that, while adjustable, do not change the size of the seating section, limiting their usefulness in space optimization.
[0004] For example, US11690549 describes a sofa with an adjustable backrest that doubles as a sofa bed. In this design, the backrest slides over the seating section, extending or shrinking its area. While this invention bears some similarity to the present innovation, it suffers from increased complexity and reduced practicality. Adjusting the backrest requires multiple locking mechanisms, necessitating multiple manipulations, complicating the user experience. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0005] To meet these needs, the novel design of the present invention allows users to adjust the seating arrangement and convert the sofa from a standard seating position to a more extended, lounge-like, or even bed-like configuration. The invention and embodiments thereof relate to a piece of furniture according to claim 1. Preferred embodiments are shown in claims 2 to 15. Furthermore, the particular features, structures, or characteristics may be combined in one or more embodiments in any suitable manner, as would be apparent to one skilled in the art from this disclosure.Furthermore, while some embodiments described herein include some, but not other, features included in other embodiments, combinations of features of different embodiments are intended to be within the scope of the invention and to constitute various embodiments, as understood by those skilled in the art. For example, in the following claims, any of the claimed embodiments may be used in any combination.
[0015] The invention relates to a piece of furniture comprising a base frame having a seating section. This piece of furniture can be a sofa, a lounge sofa, or a garden chair. In one embodiment, the sofa is designed to accommodate a single person, or it can be configured as a two-, three-, or multi-seater.
[0016] The piece of furniture further comprises a movable backrest and a pivoting mechanism, wherein the movable backrest is pivotally connected to the base frame by the pivoting mechanism. In one embodiment, the pivoting mechanism comprises at least one pivot arm having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the distal end of the pivot arm is coupled to the movable backrest. The pivoting mechanism further comprises at least a first and second rest position and at least one pivot point, wherein the base frame and the proximal end of the pivot arm are pivotally connected to one another by the pivot point, which enables rotation of the pivot arm over a distance between the first and second rest positions.
[0017] In one embodiment, the movable backrest of the piece of furniture has two pivot mechanisms, each positioned on opposite lateral sides of the backrest. These mechanisms connect the sides of the movable backrest to the base frame, ensuring a secure and stable connection that improves the robustness and comfort of the piece of furniture. Placing the pivot mechanisms on opposite lateral sides of the backrest—i.e., placing them externally rather than integrating them into the movable backrest or base frame—simplifies the manufacturing process of the piece of furniture. Additionally, this external placement facilitates easier maintenance and repair, as the mechanisms are easily accessible. An additional advantage of this placement is its versatility; the same swivel mechanism can be used regardless of the size of the movable backrest, streamlining production and reducing the need for multiple component variants.
[0018] In one embodiment, the pivot arm has a length between 5 cm and 50 cm, preferably between 10 cm and 40 cm, and more preferably between 10 cm and 30 cm. The length of the pivot arm is crucial for distinguishing between the first and second rest positions of the movable backrest. The pivot arm must preferably be long enough to create a meaningful difference between these positions, thereby achieving a significant change in the seating configuration. However, the arm should preferably not be excessively long to ensure that the rotational movement remains practical and manageable.
[0019] In one embodiment, the pivoting mechanism includes a first rest position, wherein the distance between the edge of the base frame and the movable backrest is in the range of 50 cm to 90 cm, preferably 60 cm to 80 cm. This distance is defined as the space between the movable backrest and the edge of the base frame on the opposite side of the piece of furniture.
[0020] Furthermore, in the second rest position, when the swivel arm is rotated, the distance between the edge of the base frame and the movable backrest is between 60 cm and 100 cm, preferably between 75 cm and 90 cm. This distance is measured in the same way as described above.
[0021] In an additional embodiment, the pivot arm is rotatable through an angle of 180 degrees between the first and second rest positions. This allows the movable backrest, which is connected to the pivot arm, to rotate 180 degrees relative to the base frame. The two rest positions thus correspond to either a shorter or longer distance between the movable backrest and the edge of the base frame, allowing for an easy transition between a more compact seating arrangement and an extended seating or lounge configuration. In one rest position, a specific side of the movable backrest is the front, while in the second rest position, the same side is the back of the movable backrest, and vice versa.
[0022] The advantage of such a movable backrest is the increased versatility of the piece of furniture. The movable backrest allows the sofa to transform from a standard seating arrangement into a more lounge-like configuration, making it adaptable to various sitting or reclining positions. Furthermore, users can adjust the movable backrest to their preferred sitting angle, taking into account factors such as body size, improving overall comfort and supporting different postures and personal preferences.
[0023] In a further embodiment, the piece of furniture has a pivoting mechanism with two pivot arms and two pivot points per lateral side of the movable backrest. The pivot arms are each pivotally connected to the base frame at their proximal ends via the pivot points. At their distal ends, the pivot arms are coupled to the movable backrest. In one embodiment, the pivot arms can be positioned next to each other, one above the other, or diagonally from each other on one side. In a preferred embodiment, the pivot arms are positioned next to each other. The pivot arms move parallel to each other and rotate through an angle of less than 180 degrees, preferably between 60 and 180 degrees, more preferably between 75 and 100 degrees.
[0024] An advantage of a design with two pivot arms per side is that the movable backrest can be adjusted between two configurations without requiring a full 180-degree rotation. This configuration allows the movable backrest to be integrated with armrests that adjust simultaneously with the movable backrest. Additionally, in a design with two pivot arms, the same side of the movable backrest always faces the front of the piece. This allows for the integration of features such as upholstery that provide consistent comfort and aesthetic appeal. In this design, both pivot mechanisms are placed outside the movable backrest, in the same manner as described above.
[0025] In one embodiment, the pivot arm has one or more recesses. Preferably, the pivot arm has at least two recesses. Accordingly, the base frame has an equal number of projections; one or more, preferably two. These projections and recesses are positioned so that in each rest position, a recess exactly overlaps a projection. This alignment ensures a stable rest position for the pivot arm and facilitates a 180-degree rotation.
[0026] The projections may be selected from the group consisting of bolts, dowels, pins, studs, hooks, pegs, rivets, tabs, studs, clips, buttons, or combinations thereof. These projections may have a diameter or length, defined as the longest dimension of the projection end, that is in the range of 0.1 cm to 3 cm, preferably 0.5 cm to 2.5 cm, and more preferably 1 cm to 2.5 cm. The recesses in the pivot arm are shaped and sized to accommodate the aforementioned projections. For example, if the projection is round, the recess will also be round with a slightly larger diameter. Preferably, the recesses have a diameter or length, defined as the longest dimension of the recess, that is 5% to 25% larger than the diameter or length of the projection, and more preferably 10% to 20% larger.
[0027] In one embodiment, the pivot arm has a locking system. The locking system allows the pivot arm to be locked in a rest position. The locking system can be selected from the group consisting of a detent mechanism, a cam lock, a latch lock, a ratchet mechanism, a pin lock, a spring-loaded lock, a quick release, a screw lock, or combinations thereof. The locking system can be present in one or both rest positions. Preferably, the locking system is present in both rest positions using the same mechanism.
[0028] In one embodiment, the pivot arm and the movable backrest are designed such that, when the pivot arm is in a rest position, the largest surface of the plane of the movable backrest forms an angle of between 30 and 90 degrees, preferably between 45 and 90 degrees, and more preferably between 60 and 90 degrees, relative to the largest surface of the plane of the seat portion. In one embodiment, this angle is the same in both the first and second rest positions. In a second embodiment, the angle differs between the first and second rest positions.
[0029] In another embodiment, the connection between the distal end of the pivot arm and the movable backrest includes a hinge mechanism. This hinge mechanism allows the angle of the movable backrest to be adjusted according to the user's preferences, thereby improving the ergonomic design of the piece of furniture. The hinge mechanism can be selected from a group including a butt hinge, a through hinge, a friction hinge, a torque hinge, a pivot hinge, a drum hinge, a spring-loaded hinge, a knuckle hinge, an adjustable angle hinge, or a combination thereof. In one embodiment, the movable backrest can be hinged relative to the pivot arm in both rest positions. In another embodiment, the movable backrest can be hinged relative to the pivot arm in either the first or second rest position.
[0030] In one embodiment, the pivot arm is connected to the movable backrest such that the movable backrest can rest on the seat portion of the piece of furniture in any resting position. In another embodiment, the movable backrest does not rest on the seat portion, leaving a gap between the movable backrest and the seat portion. This gap can be in the range of 5 to 30 cm, preferably 10 to 25 cm. This gap can be used to attach removable cushioning material to the seat portion, improving the comfort of the piece of furniture. In one embodiment, the movable backrest rests on the seat portion in one resting position—such as the position where the seat portion is at its largest—while not resting on it in, for example, the other resting position where the seat portion is at its smallest.
[0031] The integration of removable upholstery into the furniture significantly improves its adaptability, allowing users to customize the piece to their specific ergonomic and aesthetic preferences. Users can adjust the upholstery configuration by adding or removing layers to achieve the desired level of comfort, thus accommodating different needs and preferences. For example, multiple layers of upholstery can be used, allowing the user to select the optimal number of layers for a comfortable seating experience. Additionally, the upholstery can be easily removed when the piece is not in use, such as when a garden chair is stored during the winter months. This removable feature also facilitates easier maintenance, allowing for more efficient cleaning of both the furniture and the upholstery, thus preserving the longevity and appearance of the items. In another embodiment, the removable upholstery has a massage function or a heating and / or cooling function.
[0032] In one embodiment, the base frame and the movable backrest comprise the same material. This material can be selected from the group consisting of steel, aluminum, wood, plastic, composite materials, carbon fiber, or any other material known in the art. In another embodiment, the movable backrest comprises a different material than the base frame.
[0033] In one embodiment, the movable backrest can be enhanced with a removable headrest. Integrating a headrest into the design improves the comfort and ergonomics of the piece of furniture. However, adding a permanent headrest would be challenging in a system where the movable backrest rotates 180 degrees. Therefore, the movable backrest can be designed to include a mechanism for attaching a removable headrest. This headrest can be connected to the movable backrest via a click connection, a hook connection, a magnetic connection, a push button, a slide-rail system, suction cups, a twist-lock mechanism, or a combination thereof. In one embodiment, the movable backrest can be enhanced with a headrest in any resting position. In a further embodiment, the movable backrest can be extended with a headrest only in the first or second rest position.
[0034] In one embodiment, the pivot mechanism is driven by a motor, allowing electronic adjustment of the movable backrest. A motorized mechanism may be appropriate for larger pieces of furniture or when heavy materials are used for construction. In another embodiment, the motorized mechanism can be activated via a remote control and / or a mobile app. Additionally, the motorized mechanism can have one or more default settings, with a specific setting corresponding to a specific position of the movable backrest and, for example, the backrest's hinge mechanism.
[0035] In one embodiment, the base frame of the piece of furniture can be extended with wheels, allowing for easy movement of the piece of furniture. In another embodiment, storage compartments can be integrated beneath the seat section of the base frame. The storage compartments can be used, for example, for storing cushions or other materials.
[0036] In one embodiment, the piece of furniture can be a sofa, a lounge sofa, or a garden chair. In another embodiment, the piece of furniture is a sofa bed, wherein the piece of furniture has a dual use. When positioned in the first rest position, for example, with a smaller seating section, the piece of furniture can be used as a sofa or a lounge chair. When positioned in the second rest position, the piece of furniture can be used as a bed.
[0037] In one embodiment, the piece of furniture is foldable. This offers greater convenience for places with limited space, where the piece of furniture can be folded and stored when not in use.
[0038] In one embodiment, the base frame itself is height-adjustable. The height can be adjustable via a telescopic system, additional parts that can be added to the base frame, or any other system known in the art. In another embodiment, the armrests are adjustable in height, width, or angle.
[0039] A second aspect of the present invention relates to an arrangement of two or more pieces of furniture, wherein the pieces of furniture comprise a base frame having a seat portion, as well as a movable backrest and a pivoting mechanism. The movable backrest is pivotally connected to the base frame by the pivoting mechanism. The pivoting mechanism comprises at least one pivot arm having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the distal end of the pivot arm is coupled to the movable backrest. Furthermore, the pivoting mechanism comprises at least first and second rest positions and at least one pivot point, wherein the base frame and the proximal end of the pivot arm are pivotally connected to one another by the pivot point, which enables rotation of the pivot arm over a distance between the first and second rest positions.Preferably, the pieces of furniture are pieces of furniture according to one of the embodiments according to the first aspect of the invention.
