Description

[0001] SYSTEM FOR CONNECTING COMPONENTS OF A PIECE OF FURNITURE, PIECE OF FURNITURE COMPRISING SAID SYSTEM, METHOD OF ASSEMBLING SAID PIECE OF FURNITURE

[0002] The present invention relates to a system for connecting components of a piece of furniture, a piece of furniture and a method of assembling said piece of furniture.

[0003] In the furniture manufacturing sector, and more generally in the furniture item manufacturing sector, it is known to use connecting devices to join and tighten different furniture components together, either at the connecting angles between panel-shaped elements and in the attachment of crossbars, shelves or other elements, in order to assemble the piece of furniture and / or provide it with specific accessories.

[0004] To date, two types of systems are mainly known: interlocking or expanding.

[0005] Interlocking systems are particularly interesting for the present disclosure, generally involving the use of a first element, provided with an eyelet, and a second component, provided with a stud, such that they fit together after the stud has been inserted and subsequently slid into the eyelet.

[0006] The eyelet is usually shaped like a “lock” and is provided with an insertion portion, which is larger, and a tightening portion, defining an undercut such as to hold the stud therein and prevent the components from detaching.

[0007] To date, however, such systems are little used and exploited on the market because the connection they define is poorly reliable or convenient in terms of production, requiring in most cases inserts for both the male and female components of the coupling.

[0008] There are also solutions which provide for a direct coupling of the stud with the chipboard / core of the wood component, which is milled beforehand so as to avoid the need for inserts that are expensive and difficult to assemble. Examples of such systems may be found in several Patent documents, such as DE8708112, US20140059829 and EP3212945.

[0009] All of the documents listed above show fastening systems wherein the female component of the coupling is obtained by processing the side of the panel in such a way as to create an oblong eyelet provided with, along its extension, at least a couple of undercuts to hold a suitably shaped stud therein.

[0010] Disadvantageously, in practice such systems are not very suitable for sliding the stud into the eyelet, making the movement during the assembly step difficult or, on the contrary, resulting in a poor coupling hold. In other words, the coupling tolerance in such systems is very limited, leading to inaccurate systems with tightening difficulties or loose couplings.

[0011] To overcome this problem, the document EP3212945 provides for the presence of corrugated studs, shaped in such a way that, in the tightening position, each groove of the stud is coupled with a corresponding protrusion of the eyelet and vice versa.

[0012] Thanks to this interlock multiplication, the hold of the coupling is undoubtedly improved, but still has substantial risks of reversal.

[0013] Due to the possibility that the two components disengage, to date, this type of systems are only used in components that require at least two stud / eyelet couplings and preferably also require the coupling of a third component adapted to prevent the sliding in the release direction.

[0014] Typical examples of applications are the side panels of a piece of furniture, wherein the bottom (or top) walls are used as an abutment suitable for preventing disengagement.

[0015] This clearly limits considerably the spread of these connecting systems, reducing their appeal to furniture manufacturers and preventing widespread use thereof.

[0016] A further solution, developed by the Applicant itself and protected by the International Patent Application WO2021 / 245591 , involves the creation of a “key-hole” slot provided with a sliding ramp between the insertion and tightening portions which eases the relative sliding of the two components and the consequent tightening.

[0017] This solution, however, introduces a critical issue as far as processing is concerned, as the “ramp” is difficult to produce with the 3-axis machines usually used by furniture manufacturers.

[0018] The purpose of the present invention is therefore to make available a connecting system for components of a piece of furniture, a piece of furniture and a method of assembling said piece of furniture that overcome the drawbacks of the above-mentioned prior art.

[0019] In particular, one of the purposes of the present invention is to make available a connecting system for components of a piece of furniture, a piece of furniture and a highly efficient method of assembling said piece of furniture, which is simple and cost-effective to manufacture obtaining a high coupling hold.

[0020] Said purposes are achieved by a connecting system between components of a piece of furniture, a piece of furniture and a method of assembling said piece of furniture having the characteristics of one or more of the following claims.

[0021] In particular, said purposes are achieved by a connecting system between the components of a piece of furniture comprising a stud made of a plastic material and inserted into a hole made in a first surface of a first component of a piece of furniture and a slot made in a second surface of a second component of the piece of furniture.

[0022] The stud preferably comprises an anchoring portion which may be inserted within a hole made in the first surface of a first component of a piece of furniture, a stem departing from said anchoring portion along an insertion direction and a head extending from said stem.

[0023] The head preferably has a width (i.e. a dimension transversal to the insertion direction) greater than a width of said stem to define a shoulder with the stem itself.

[0024] The shoulder, in use, is facing said first surface of the first component. The slot extends along a tightening direction transversal to said insertion direction.

[0025] Such slot is sized to accommodate therein the head of the stud.

[0026] The slot has an insertion portion provided with an enlarged insertion section, such as to allow the head of the stud to be introduced into said slot along said insertion direction.

[0027] The slot also has a retaining portion, provided with at least one abutment shoulder extending along said tightening direction and shaped to prevent said head from coming out along the insertion direction.

[0028] The abutment shoulder has a thickness defined by a distance between said second surface of the second component and a sliding face for the shoulder of the head of the stud.

[0029] The stud may therefore be inserted into said slot along said insertion direction at said insertion portion and is movable within the slot, along the tightening direction, towards a tightening position.

[0030] According to one aspect of the invention, the thickness of the abutment shoulder is equal to or slightly greater than an axial dimension of the stem of the stud.

[0031] Preferably, the thickness of the abutment shoulder and the axial dimension of the stem of the stud have a different nominal size, even if only slightly.

[0032] In particular, the axial dimension of the stem and the thickness of the abutment shoulder differ by an amount between 1% and 5% of the nominal size of the stem or abutment shoulder.

[0033] Preferably, furthermore, the head of the stud also has a tapered shape or is dome-shaped.

[0034] Advantageously, the abutment shoulder is thereby sized to interfere with the head of the stud, forcing the stem to flex (elastically) so as to increase the space between the head and the first surface of the component of the piece of furniture and allow both the stud to slide relative to the abutment shoulder and the elastic return of the stud itself, thus optimising the hold. In other words, the stem of the stud is configured to flex in response to a pushing action along said tightening direction by an end edge of the sliding face of the abutment shoulder, increasing, in a half-part of the stud proximal to the abutment shoulder, the distance between the shoulder of the head of the stud and the first surface of the first component until a value exceeding said abutment shoulder thickness is reached.

[0035] Preferably, moreover, the stem of the stud has a maximum dimension transversal to the insertion direction greater than a corresponding maximum transverse dimension of the anchoring portion, defining an annular abutment between the stem and the anchoring portion, which, in use, abuts the first surface.

[0036] This advantageously promotes the strength of the stud and the elastic return following the insertion of the abutment shoulder.

[0037] Preferably, the slot has a bottom surface counter-shaped at an extrados of the stud head.

[0038] Advantageously, the presence of a tapered or dome-shaped head allows, together with a similarly shaped bottom surface, a slight rotation of the head during the flexion of the stem.

[0039] A piece of furniture is also an object of the present invention, comprising the first and second components mentioned above and the connecting system which is the object of the invention, wherein the stud is fixed to the first surface of said first component, the slot is made in the second surface of said second component and the head of the stud is placed in the slot at the tightening position.

[0040] Another object of the present invention is a method of assembling the above-mentioned piece of furniture.

[0041] The method involves preparing the first component of the piece of furniture, with the stud protruding from the first surface, and the second component of the piece of furniture, with the slot made in the second surface.

[0042] The stud is then inserted at the insertion portion of the slot, along said insertion direction, until the first surface abuts the second surface. An end edge of the sliding face of the abutment shoulder is aligned along the tightening direction with a portion of the head of the stud.

[0043] A pushing action is then exerted, by said end edge of the sliding face of the abutment shoulder, along said tightening direction on the head of the stud in order to achieve a flexion of the stem of the stud in the pushing direction and until a predetermined inclination of the stem of the stud is reached, such that the abutment shoulder fits between the shoulder and the first face of the first component.

[0044] It is thus possible to translate the first component relative to the second component along said tightening direction until said tightening position is reached.

[0045] These and other characteristics, together with their relative advantages, will become clearer from the following exemplary, therefore non-limiting, description of a preferred, therefore non-exclusive, embodiment of a connecting system between components of a piece of furniture as well as a piece of furniture, as well as a method of assembling said piece of furniture, according to what shown in the attached drawings, wherein:

[0046] - Figure 1 -3 show the steps of a method of assembling a piece of furniture provided with a connecting system between components of a piece of furniture according to the present invention;

[0047] - Figure 4 shows a detail of Figure 1 ;

[0048] - Figures 5 and 6 schematically show portions of the connecting system between components of a piece of furniture of Figures 1 -3.

[0049] With reference to the appended figures, a connecting system for components of a piece of furniture according to the present invention is referred to as number 1 .

[0050] In particular, the connecting system 1 is configured to connect a first 101 and a second component 102 of a piece of furniture 100 with each other, where the term component both refers to structural elements (doors, panels, uprights, cross-pieces) and accessory elements of the piece of furniture itself.

[0051] In particular, the first component 101 may be defined either by a door or panel, possibly made of wood, but also by a component of another nature such as a bar, a crosspiece, a wall unit, and so on.

[0052] The second component 102, on the other hand, is preferably shaped as a wooden panel, preferably with an MDF, chipboard or veneered structure.

[0053] The connecting system 1 comprises a stud 2 that may be fitted into a slot 6 made in the second component 102 of the piece of furniture 100.

[0054] The stud 2 is preferably made of a plastic material, more preferably provided with such a flexibility / elasticity as to allow a small amount of elastic deformation when subjected to a predetermined load.

[0055] In the preferred embodiment, the stud 2 is made of a high-strength and flexible plastic material.

[0056] In the preferred embodiment, the stud 2 is made of polyamide, preferably glass-fibre reinforced polyamide.

[0057] The stud 2 has an anchoring portion 3 that can be attached to the first component 101 of the piece of furniture, a stem 4 departing from said anchoring portion along an insertion direction and a head 5.

[0058] The anchoring portion 3 is inserted into a hole made in a first surface 101a of the first component 101 of the piece of furniture 100.

[0059] Preferably, said anchoring portion 3 is provided with a plurality of radial flexible fins adapted to increase the hold within the hole once said anchoring portion 3 is inserted.

[0060] Preferably, the flexible fins are arranged in sequence along the insertion direction A.

[0061] In the preferred embodiment, each fin has a plurality of angularly spaced notches; such notches, in addition to allowing for increased flexibility of the fin, define openings useful for the passage of any glues present in the hole of the first component 101 .

[0062] In other words, the set of notches makes it possible to define an outflow for the glue, facilitating the correct distribution of the adhesive and the fixing of the stud 2.

[0063] In addition, a plurality of angularly spaced grooves are defined between each fin and the following one; in detail, two circumferentially adjacent grooves are spaced by a longitudinal rib, so that the glue is uniformly housed and distributed irrespective of the orientation of the stud 2.

[0064] The stem 4 extends from the anchoring portion 3 along the insertion direction A.

[0065] Such stem 4 preferably has a cylindrical or polygonal shape, preferably but not necessarily with a constant cross-section (or diameter).

[0066] In some embodiments, the stem may have a tapered or moderately flared shape.

[0067] Note that the stem 4 has a greater width D2 than a corresponding width D3 of the anchoring portion 3, defining an annular abutment 4a between the stem 4 and the anchoring portion 3 which, in use, abuts the first surface 101 a.

[0068] The term “width” refers, in the present specification, to the maximum dimension of the stem 4, anchoring portion 3 or head 5 measured in a plane that is transversal, preferably orthogonal, to the insertion direction A. In the preferred embodiment, the width corresponds to the diameter of the respective component.

[0069] Preferably, the ratio between the width D2 of the stem 4 and the width D3 of the anchoring portion 3 may be quantified between 1 .05 and 1 .35, more preferably of about 1 .2.

[0070] The head 5 extends from said stem 4 and has a width D1 greater than a width D2 of said stem 4 to define a shoulder 5a with the stem 4 itself.

[0071] The shoulder 5a therefore faces the first surface 101a of the first component 101 , preferably spaced from it by the stem 4 alone.

[0072] In the preferred embodiment, the shoulder 5a extends orthogonally to the insertion direction; more preferably, such abutment 5a lies in a (geometric) plane parallel to the flat face 101 a of the first component 101 . Preferably, the shoulder 5a is peripherally delimited by a rounded annular edge 5b; in other words, the annular edge 5b of the shoulder 5a is connected to an extrados of the head 5. Preferably, the head 5 of the stud 2 has a tapered shape or is dome-shaped. In other words, the head 5 is shaped in such a way that one central portion thereof, aligned with its own central axis parallel to the insertion direction, has a greater axial dimension than one peripheral portions thereof.

[0073] In the preferred embodiment, the head 5 is mushroom-shaped. More preferably, the end of the head is truncated, defining a transverse face 5c parallel to the shoulder 5a.

[0074] Advantageously, this reduces the axial dimension of the stud 2 (and head 5), to the benefit of tightening efficiency, which is optimised with a reduced axial extension head.

[0075] The slot 6 is, as mentioned, made in the second surface 102a of the second component 102 of the piece of furniture.

[0076] Preferably, such a slot 6 is made by hollowing out a flat face 102a of the second component 102, preferably by means of special milling tools.

[0077] Such slot 6 extends along a tightening direction B transversal to the insertion direction A.

[0078] In the preferred embodiment, the insertion direction A is orthogonal to the flat face 102a of the second component 102.

[0079] Preferably, furthermore, the tightening direction B is parallel to the flat face 102a of the second component 102

[0080] The slot 6 is specifically sized to house the head 5 of the stud 2 therein.

[0081] In this respect, preferably, the slot 6 has an insertion portion 7 and a retaining portion 8 arranged in sequence along the tightening direction B.

[0082] The insertion portion 7 is provided with an enlarged insertion section such that the head 5 of the stud 2 can be introduced into the slot 6 along said insertion direction A.

[0083] The retaining portion 8, on the other hand, is provided with at least one (preferably two) abutment shoulder 9 extending along said tightening direction B and shaped to prevent said head 5 from coming out along the insertion direction A.

[0084] Preferably, the abutment shoulders 9 of the slot 6 are two, arranged on either side of the slot and, preferably, facing and parallel to each other.

[0085] The stud 2 may be therefore inserted into the slot 6 along said insertion direction A at the insertion portion 7 and, once inserted, is movable within slot 6 along the tightening direction B to a tightening position.

[0086] During the assembly step, therefore, the stud 2 is inserted into the slot 6 along said insertion direction A at the insertion portion 7 and is subsequently translated inside the slot 6 in the tightening direction B until the tightening position is reached. Note in this respect that what matters is the creation of a relative movement between the stud 2 and the slot 6 in the tightening direction B, whether this is achieved by the movement of the stud 2 alone, slot 6 alone (i.e. the second component 102) or both.

[0087] Once the system is assembled, therefore, the enlarged portion 5 of the stud 2 is placed in the slot 6 at the tightening position.

[0088] The slot 6 therefore has a substantially keyhole shape, such as to allow the introduction of the stud 2 in a predetermined first position (i.e. aligned with the insertion direction A) and to prevent it from coming out along the insertion direction A in one or more second positions (e.g. tightening position).

[0089] In other words, the slot 6 has:

[0090] - an “outer” portion with a variable cross-section between an enlarged portion corresponding to the insertion portion and a narrow portion corresponding to the retaining portion

[0091] - an “inner”, deeper portion having a substantially constant width and approximately corresponding to that of said enlarged portion of the stud.

[0092] The inner portion is internally bounded by a bottom wall, which is preferably counter-shaped to an extrados of the head 5 of the stud.

[0093] Preferably, the “inner” portion has a substantially constant width (i.e. dimension orthogonal to both insertion directions A and tightening direction B) and corresponding to the width (or diameter of the enlarged portion 5 of the stud 2).

[0094] The “outer” portion has a first section, at the insertion portion 7, having a width (preferably a diameter) substantially corresponding to that of the enlarged portion 5 of the stud 2 and a second section, at the retaining portion 8, having a width substantially corresponding to that of the stem 4 of the stud 2.

[0095] Preferably, therefore, the width of the first section is about 1 / 3 greater than that of the second section.

[0096] In the preferred embodiment, the second section has a width of approximately 8 mm and the first section has a width of approximately 12 mm.

[0097] Preferably, the at least one abutment shoulder 9 (preferably both) has a thickness S defined by a distance between said second surface 102a of the second component 102 and a sliding face 11 for the shoulder 5a of the head 5 of the stud 2.

[0098] According to one aspect of the invention, said thickness S of the abutment shoulder 9 (or abutment shoulders) is equal to or slightly greater than an axial dimension X of the stem 4 of the stud 2.

[0099] In the preferred embodiment, the thickness S of the abutment shoulder 9 and the axial dimension X of the stem 4 of the stud 2 have a different nominal dimension, even if minimally.

[0100] In particular, the axial dimension X of the stem 4 and the thickness S of the abutment shoulder 9 differ by an amount between 1% and 5% of the nominal size of the stem 4 or abutment shoulder 9.

[0101] Alternatively, the thickness S of the abutment shoulder 9 and the axial dimension X of the stem 4 of the stud 2 have a same nominal dimension, but have, respectively, a positive deviation and a negative deviation from said nominal dimension. In other words, therefore, the abutment shoulder 9 has at least one end edge 10, facing the insertion portion 7 of the slot 6 and, during the assembly, aligned with and partly incident upon the head 5 of the stud 2, at a peripheral zone proximal to the shoulder 5a.

[0102] The stem 4 of the stud 2 is thus configured to flex in response to a pushing action along said tightening direction B by the end edge 10 of the sliding face 11 of the abutment shoulder 9, exerted after inserting the stud 2 along the insertion direction A and during the relative movement between the stud 2 and the slot 6 along the tightening direction B

[0103] This flexion increases the distance between the shoulder 5a of the head 5 of the stud 2 and the first surface 101a of the first component 101 at a half-part of the stud 2 proximal to the abutment shoulder 9 until it reaches a value greater than said thickness S of the abutment shoulder 9.

[0104] This allows the abutment shoulder 9 to fit between the shoulder 5a of the head 5 and the first surface 101 a, allowing the stud 2 to slide along the tightening direction B and to reach the tightening position.

[0105] At the same time, the absence of the pushing action allows the stem 4 to straighten elastically, helping to generate a tightening action between the two components 101 , 102 of the piece of furniture 100; the interference coupling between the stud and the abutment shoulder, in fact, also due to the deformability of the stud 2, ensures that the two components are tightened together.

[0106] Preferably, in this respect, the end edge 10 of the sliding face 11 is placed at a height aligned with the annular edge 5b of the abutment 5a; such an annular edge 5b thus defines a pilot element for the end edge 10, which encourages the sliding of the abutment shoulder 9 with respect to the stud 2 as a result of its flexion.

[0107] Once assembled, therefore, the first 101 and the second component 102 constitute all or part of the piece of furniture 100, which is also the object of the invention.

[0108] The piece of furniture 100 thus comprises at least a first component 101 comprising said first surface 101 a, at least a second component 102 having said second surface 102a and a connecting system 1 between said first component 101 and said second component 102.

[0109] In greater detail, in the piece of furniture 100 the stud 2 is fixed to the first surface 101 a of said first component 101 , the slot 6 is made in the second surface 102a of said second component 102 and the head 5 of the stud 2 is placed in the slot 6 at the tightening position.

[0110] A special assembly method has therefore been implemented for manufacturing the piece of furniture 100, which is also an object, complementary or alternative to the previous ones, of the invention.

[0111] We will therefore proceed hereinafter to describe the method in greater detail, emphasising from the outset that all of the features mentioned and described in connection with the system or piece of furniture, where not expressly indicated or in the event of incompatibilities, are to be considered applicable mutatis mutandis to the following description of the method object of the present invention.

[0112] In fact, the method involves preparing the first component 101 of the piece of furniture, with the stud 2 protruding from the first surface 101 a, and the second component 102 of the piece of furniture, with the slot 6 made in the second surface 102a.

[0113] At this point, the stud 2 is inserted at (i.e. into) the insertion portion 7 of the slot 6, along said insertion direction A.

[0114] Such insertion step continues until the first surface 101 a abuts the second surface 102a of the two components 101 , 102.

[0115] Thus, due to the relationship between the thickness S of the abutment shoulder 9 and the axial dimension X of the stem 4, the end edge 10 of the sliding face 11 of the abutment shoulder 9 is aligned, along the tightening direction B, with a portion of the head 5 of the stud 2.

[0116] A pushing action along said tightening direction B is now exerted by said end edge 10 of the sliding face 11 of the abutment shoulder 9 on the head 5 of the stud 2 in order to obtain a flexion of the stem 4 of the stud 2 in a pushing direction.

[0117] The pushing action is maintained until a predetermined inclination of the stem 4 of the stud 2 is reached, such that the abutment shoulder 9 is inserted between the shoulder 5a and the first face 101 a of the first component 101 .

[0118] At this point, the first component is translated relative to the second component 102 along said tightening direction B until said tightening position is reached.

[0119] It should be noted that, preferably, following the insertion of the abutment shoulder 9 between the shoulder 5a and the first face 101 a of the first component 101 , the stem 4 of the stud 2 elastically returns to its original orientation, generating a tightening action between the two components 101 , 102 of the piece of furniture 100 and, in greater detail, increasing the friction force between the first 101 a and the second surface 102a.

[0120] The invention achieves its intended purposes and obtains important advantages.

[0121] In fact, the use of a sliding connecting system having an interference coupling between the stud and the abutment shoulder of the slot allows to obtain a high tightening degree without complicating the structure of the component.

[0122] The assembly method is therefore simple, with pushing and tightening actions generated autonomously by the components being moved along the tightening direction by the operator.
