[0001] Coolant system for an electric vehicle and thermal management system

[0002] Description

[0003] The present invention relates to a coolant system for an electric vehicle of the type mentioned in the preamble of claim 1 and a thermal management system for an electric vehicle with a coolant system and a refrigerant circuit of the type mentioned in the preamble of claim 10.

[0004] Such coolant systems for electric vehicles and thermal management systems for electric vehicles are already known in numerous design variants from the prior art. The known coolant systems for electric vehicles for circulating a liquid coolant comprise a plurality of components through which the coolant can flow, wherein the components can be connected to one another, at least in at least one subset, by means of valves and coolant lines. However, complex coolant systems and thermal management systems, such as those required in modern electric vehicles, require a very large number of valves and coolant lines in the prior art. Such systems require a large amount of installation space and are expensive.

[0005] This is where the present invention comes in.

[0006] The present invention is based on the object of improving a coolant system for an electric vehicle and a thermal management system for an electric vehicle with a coolant system and a refrigerant circuit.

[0007] This object is achieved by a coolant system for electric vehicles having the features of claim 1, which is characterized in that only a single multi-way valve and a single check valve are designed and arranged in such a way that one of the components and another of the components can be connected to one another in a flow-conducting manner solely by means of a further component designed as a coolant pump and a predetermined switching state of the multi-way valve for flow through the multi-way valve and the check valve, independently of the rest of the components. The one component and the other component can each be designed as any sensible and suitable component of the coolant system according to the invention through which the coolant can flow. Furthermore, this problem is solved by a thermal management system for electric vehicles having the features of claim 10.The subclaims relate to advantageous developments of the invention.

[0008] A significant advantage of the invention is, in particular, that a coolant system for an electric vehicle and a thermal management system for an electric vehicle with a coolant system and a refrigerant circuit are improved. Due to the invention, functionally complex coolant systems and thermal management systems for electric vehicles can be realized in a simpler manner in terms of design and production technology. Accordingly, the number of coolant lines and valves is significantly reduced. At the same time, the efficiency of such coolant systems and

[0009] Thermal management systems have increased their performance because the aforementioned systems enable greater functional complexity with significantly fewer components compared to the state of the art. Accordingly, a simple system with a few components, valves, and coolant lines can be used to implement a variety of operating states, i.e., system operating modes.

[0010] In principle, the thermal management system for an electric vehicle according to the invention and the coolant system for an electric vehicle according to the invention can each be freely selected within wide, suitable limits in terms of type, mode of operation, material, and dimensions. Furthermore, the invention is not limited to application in purely electric vehicles. For example, the invention can also be advantageously used in so-called hybrid vehicles.

[0011] A particularly advantageous development of the coolant system according to the invention provides that the valves are designed as only the single multi-way valve and the single check valve. This reduces the number of valves required for the coolant system according to the invention to a minimum.

[0012] A further particularly advantageous development of the coolant system according to the invention provides that one component, the other component, and the further component designed as a coolant pump are arranged in a separate coolant subcircuit from the rest of the components while coolant flows through them together. This enables complete fluidic separation of the three aforementioned components from the rest of the coolant system components.

[0013] Another advantageous development of the coolant system according to the invention provides that the plurality of components comprises at least a subset of the following components of a thermal management system: coolant tank, coolant pump, battery, chiller, coolant heater, powertrain with an electric motor and power electronics for the electric motor, cooling air radiator for heat exchange with the outside environment, condenser for a refrigerant circuit. The aforementioned components can also be installed in a plurality of the respective components in the coolant system according to the invention. This specifies essential components for a coolant system for the coolant system according to the invention.

[0014] An advantageous development of the aforementioned embodiment of the coolant system according to the invention provides that the two components, which can be connected in a flow-conducting manner only by means of the multi-way valve and the check valve, are, on the one hand, a cooling air radiator for heat exchange of the coolant with a free environment, and, on the other hand, a chiller for heat exchange with a refrigerant circuit for air conditioning a passenger compartment of the electric vehicle and / or for controlling the temperature of the coolant flowing in the coolant circuit. In this way, one of the components and the other of the components are implemented in a particularly suitable manner. By means of the chiller, the battery can usually be cooled to a temperature range required for its function, despite adverse ambient and / or operating conditions of the electric vehicle. However, the chiller can also be used additionally or alternatively for other cooling tasks, for example, for cooling the powertrain. The waste heat generated during any cooling process using the thermal management system according to the invention with the coolant system according to the invention, including the waste heat from the chiller, can, depending on the switching state of the multi-way valve, be usefully used to heat other areas of the vehicle, for example a passenger compartment, or to heat other components of the coolant system. According to the present development of the coolant system according to the invention, it is also possible for the coolant to be cooled below an ambient temperature and then reheated by ambient air through the cooling air radiator. The heat thus absorbed is transferred to the refrigerant circuit in the next circulation step by the chiller, provided that it is in heat transfer connection with the refrigerant circuit, and the described process begins again.

[0015] An advantageous refinement of the latter embodiment of the coolant system according to the invention provides that the chiller and a component configured as a battery are fluidically arranged in such a way that coolant can flow through the chiller independently of the battery. In this way, the chiller can be used independently of the battery, for example, solely in conjunction with the aforementioned cooling air radiator.

[0016] An advantageous development of the coolant system according to the invention according to one of claims 4 to 6 provides that the battery can be fluidically separated from the rest of the coolant system merely by means of an additional valve, preferably a 3 / 2-way valve, of the coolant system. As a result, the battery can be fluidically separated from the rest of the coolant system in a particularly simple manner in terms of design and circuitry. An advantageous development of the coolant system according to the invention according to one of claims 4 to 7 provides that the multi-way valve is designed such that the coolant can flow through the powertrain without interruption in all possible switching states of the multi-way valve and when the multi-way valve is transferred from one of these switching states to another of these switching states. This ensures that the powertrain, and thus the power electronics and the electric motor, are safely cooled to the temperature required for their proper functioning under all ambient and operating conditions of the electric vehicle.

[0017] An advantageous development of the coolant system according to the invention according to one of claims 4 to 8 provides that the coolant system is designed such that, depending on the switching state of the multi-way valve, the following coolant-conducting connections can be realized at least in a subset, preferably all, solely by means of the multi-way valve and the check valve: a) coolant-conducting connection of the chiller to the battery, b) coolant-conducting connection of the chiller to the powertrain, c) coolant-conducting connection of the chiller to the cooling air radiator, d) coolant-conducting connection of the chiller to the cooling air radiator and the powertrain, e) coolant-conducting connection of the chiller to the battery and the powertrain, and f) coolant-conducting connection of the chiller to the battery, the cooling air radiator, and the powertrain. This makes the coolant system according to the invention particularly flexible and thus suitable for use in an electric vehicle, even for temperature control tasks that are inherently very demanding in terms of circuitry. This applies in particular to the preferred embodiment of this further development.

[0018] The advantages associated with the coolant system according to the invention can also be used for the thermal management system according to the invention, comprising a coolant system and a refrigerant circuit.

[0019] An advantageous development of the thermal management system according to the invention provides that the refrigerant circuit is designed for air conditioning a passenger compartment of the electric vehicle and / or for controlling the temperature of a coolant flowing in the coolant system. This allows the refrigerant circuit to be used in a particularly advantageous manner.

[0020] An advantageous development of the aforementioned embodiment of the thermal management system according to the invention, referring back to claim 4, provides that the thermal management system is designed such that, if necessary, a heat transfer connection can be established between the coolant system on one side and the refrigerant circuit on the other side by means of the chiller. In this way, in addition to controlling the temperature of the refrigerant circuit, i.e., a refrigerant flowing in the refrigerant circuit, the thermal management system also enables the temperature of the coolant system in a very simple manner in terms of design and manufacturing technology. The chiller is thus a component of both the coolant system and the refrigerant circuit.

[0021] Furthermore, an advantageous development of the thermal management system according to the invention according to claim 11 or 12, with reference back to claim 4, provides that the thermal management system is designed such that, if necessary, a heat transfer connection can be established between the coolant system on the one side and the refrigerant circuit on the other side by means of the condenser, preferably that the condenser is arranged in the drive train sub-circuit in a coolant-conducting manner. As a result, for example, a component present in a conventional refrigerant circuit for an electric vehicle, namely the condenser, can be used both for the operation of the refrigerant circuit and for heat transfer between the coolant system on the one side and the refrigerant circuit on the other side. Accordingly, advantages arise here that are comparable to those of the aforementioned development of the thermal management system according to the invention.Combining the two aforementioned developments of the thermal management system according to the invention further enables even more energy to be exchanged between the coolant system and the refrigerant circuit. Furthermore, the flexibility of the thermal management system according to the invention is further increased.

[0022] The invention is explained in more detail below using the attached, roughly schematic drawing. It shows:

[0023] Fig. 1 shows an embodiment of the coolant system according to the invention for the thermal management system according to the invention in a process flow diagram,

[0024] Fig. 2 shows the embodiment in an analogous representation to Fig. 1, in a first operating state of the coolant system,

[0026] Fig. 4 shows the embodiment in an analogous representation to Fig. 1, in a third operating state of the coolant system,

[0027] Fig. 5 shows the embodiment in an analogous representation to Fig. 1, in a fourth operating state of the coolant system,

[0028] Fig. 6 shows the embodiment in an analogous representation to Fig. 1, in a fifth operating state of the coolant system and

[0029] Fig. 7 shows the embodiment in an analogous representation to Fig. 1, in a sixth operating state of the coolant system.

[0030] In Figures 1 to 7, an embodiment of the coolant system according to the invention of a thermal management system according to the invention (not shown in detail) is shown purely by way of example.

[0031] The thermal management system is designed as a thermal management system for a purely electric vehicle and comprises, on the one hand, a coolant system 2 and, on the other hand, a refrigerant circuit (not shown). The refrigerant circuit is designed for air conditioning a passenger compartment of the electric vehicle (also not shown) and for controlling the temperature of a coolant (not shown) flowing in the coolant system 2. The coolant system 2 is shown in Fig. 1.

[0032] The coolant system 2 for circulating the liquid coolant here comprises a plurality of components through which the coolant can flow, wherein the components can be connected to one another in a coolant-conducting manner, at least in at least one subset, by means of valves and by means of coolant lines.

[0033] According to the invention, the coolant system 2 is designed such that only a single multi-way valve 4 and a single check valve 6 are designed and arranged such that one of the components 20 and another of the components 16 can be fluidly connected to one another solely by means of a further component 10 designed as a coolant pump and a predetermined switching state of the multi-way valve 4 for flow through the multi-way valve 4 and the check valve 6, independently of the rest of the components 8, 12, 14, 18. See Fig. 4.

[0034] In the present embodiment, the components are designed as a coolant tank 8, a first coolant pump 10, a second coolant pump 12, a battery 14, a chiller 16, a powertrain 18 with an electric motor and power electronics for the electric motor, and a cooling air radiator 20 for heat exchange with a free environment.

[0035] The three aforementioned components, which can only be connected to one another in a flow-conducting manner by means of a previously defined switching state of the multi-way valve 4 for flow through the multi-way valve 4 and the check valve 6, are designed here as the cooling air radiator 20 for heat exchange of the coolant with a free environment, the chiller 16 for heat exchange with the refrigerant circuit (not shown in detail) for air conditioning the passenger compartment of the electric vehicle and for temperature control of the coolant flowing in the coolant circuit 2 and as the first coolant pump 10, wherein the cooling air radiator 20, the chiller 16 and the first coolant pump 10 are arranged in a sub-circuit of the coolant that is separate from the rest of the components 8, 12, 14, 18 of the coolant system 2 when coolant flows through them together.

[0036] In the present embodiment, the chiller 16 and the battery 14 are arranged fluidically such that coolant can flow through the chiller 16 independently of the battery 14. See, for example, Fig. 4.

[0037] Furthermore, the battery 14 can be fluidically separated from the remainder of the coolant system 2 by means of a 3 / 2-way valve 22 of the coolant system 2. Accordingly, the present embodiment of the coolant system according to the invention has only three valves in total, namely the multi-way valve 4, the check valve 6, and the 3 / 2-way valve 22. However, embodiments of the coolant system according to the invention are conceivable in which the coolant system has only a single multi-way valve and a single check valve.

[0038] Furthermore, in the present exemplary embodiment, the multi-way valve 4 is designed such that the coolant can flow through the powertrain 18 without interruption in all possible switching states of the multi-way valve 4 and when the multi-way valve 4 is transferred from one of these switching states to another of these switching states.

[0039] In the present exemplary embodiment, the coolant system 2 is designed such that, depending on the switching state of the multi-way valve 4, the following coolant-conducting connections can all be realized solely by means of the multi-way valve 4 and the check valve 6: a) coolant-conducting connection of the chiller 16 to the battery 14, b) coolant-conducting connection of the chiller 16 to the powertrain 18, c) coolant-conducting connection of the chiller 16 to the cooling air radiator 20, d) coolant-conducting connection of the chiller 16 to the cooling air radiator 20 and the powertrain 18, e) coolant-conducting connection of the chiller 16 to the battery 14 and the powertrain 18, and f) coolant-conducting connection of the chiller 16 to the battery 14, the cooling air radiator 20, and the powertrain 18.

[0040] The thermal management system is designed in such a way that, by means of the chiller 16, a heat transfer connection can be established, if required, between the coolant system 2 on the one side and the refrigerant circuit (not shown in detail) on the other side.

[0041] In the following, the functioning of the thermal management system according to the invention with the coolant system according to the invention according to the present embodiment is explained in more detail with reference to Figs. 1 to 7.

[0042] Depending on the operating state of the thermal management system with the coolant system 2 and taking into account the driving situation and the ambient temperature, the aforementioned components of the coolant system 2 can represent heat sources or heat sinks.

[0043] The efficiency of the overall system, i.e., the thermal management system with the coolant system 2, can be improved by connecting or disconnecting the individual aforementioned components as needed. According to the invention, this is achieved in a particularly simple manner in terms of design and manufacturing technology, while simultaneously ensuring high efficiency of the overall system.

[0044] For example, while driving, the battery 14 can be efficiently warmed up in a cold state using the waste heat from the powertrain 18, namely the power electronics and the electric motor. For this purpose, the battery 14 must be connected to the power electronics and the electric motor, i.e., the powertrain 18, in a coolant-conducting manner. However, at very high ambient temperatures, it is imperative that the battery 14 be separated from the powertrain 18 so that only the heat-sensitive battery 14 can be cooled by the chiller 16.

[0045] Heating the interior, i.e., the passenger compartment, in particular, presents a major challenge, since in an electric vehicle, the powertrain 18 typically generates too little waste heat compared to a vehicle with a combustion engine. For this reason, the chiller 16 is used to supply heat from all available heat sources of the coolant system 2 to the refrigerant circuit (not shown in detail), i.e., the heat pump. Accordingly, the waste heat from the battery 14, the powertrain 18, or from ambient air, which is transferred to the coolant by means of the cooling air radiator 20, must be supplied to the chiller 16, depending on availability, by creating a coolant-conducting connection between these components.

[0046] In order to optimally combine the waste heat from the battery 14 and / or the powertrain 18 and / or from the ambient air, taking into account all conceivable driving states and environmental conditions, a large number of coolant-conducting connections are required between the battery 14, the powertrain 18, the cooling air radiator 20, and the chiller 16. This is made possible according to the invention while simultaneously maintaining low structural complexity of the thermal management system with the coolant system 2, i.e., while simultaneously requiring a small number of coolant lines and valves. Fig. 1 shows the coolant system 2, with which the above-mentioned combinations a) to f) for utilizing various heat sources of the coolant system 2 are possible.

[0047] According to the invention, as realized in the embodiment, the structural system complexity is greatly reduced and the system efficiency is significantly improved.

[0048] The inventive combination of the components of the coolant system 2 enables the following six operating modes of the coolant system 2.

[0049] In a first operating state of the coolant system 2 and a corresponding switching state of the multi-way valve 4, the battery 14 is cooled separately via the chiller 16; the drive train, i.e. the powertrain 18, is connected to the cooling air radiator 20 in a parallel partial coolant circuit via the multi-way valve 4. See Fig. 2. The coolant lines of the coolant system 2 through which coolant flows are shown in bold, solid, or dashed lines in Figs. 1 to 7. This first operating state of the coolant system 2 corresponds to the above-mentioned coolant-conducting connection a.

[0050] In a second operating state of the coolant system 2, which is an alternative to the aforementioned waste heat utilization case and has a corresponding switching state of the multi-way valve 4, the battery 14 and the powertrain 18, together with the chiller 16, are combined in a common coolant sub-circuit. The cooling air radiator 20 is not connected. See Fig. 3. This second operating state of the coolant system 2 corresponds to the above-mentioned coolant-conducting connections b and e. The 3 / 2-way valve 22 can be used to implement this circuit, for example, to establish the coolant-conducting connection b. However, embodiments of the invention are also conceivable in which no such valve is used. Instead, the coolant is forcibly guided through the battery in the present circuit.

[0051] In a third operating state of the coolant system 2 with a corresponding switching state of the multi-way valve 4, the battery 14 and the powertrain 18 are connected to each other in a common coolant subcircuit. In this circuit, the cooling air radiator 20 is fluidly connected to the chiller 16. See Fig. 4. Accordingly, the third operating state of the coolant system 2 corresponds to the aforementioned coolant-conducting connection c.

[0052] In a fourth operating state of the coolant system 2 with a corresponding switching state of the multi-way valve 4, the battery 14, the powertrain 18, and the chiller 16 are fluidly connected to one another in a common partial coolant circuit; the cooling air radiator 20 is additionally arranged between the battery 14 and the powertrain 18. See Fig. 5. The 3 / 2-way valve 22 can, analogously to the above case, be used to implement this circuit, for example, to implement the coolant-conducting connection d. However, other embodiments of the invention are also conceivable here in which the coolant flows forcibly through the battery 14, so that the 3 / 2-way valve 22 is not absolutely necessary. This operating mode thus corresponds to the aforementioned coolant-conducting connections d and f.

[0053] In a fifth operating state of the coolant system 2 with a corresponding switching state of the multi-way valve 4, the battery 14 can be heated, for example, via a separate electric auxiliary heater (not shown) or the like; the powertrain 18 forms a parallel partial coolant circuit by means of the multi-way valve 4, bypassing the cooling air radiator 20. See Fig. 6. This fifth operating state again corresponds to the aforementioned coolant-conducting connection a.

[0054] In a sixth operating state of the coolant system 2, with a corresponding switching state of the multi-way valve 4, the battery 14 and the powertrain 18 form a common partial coolant circuit, in which the powertrain 18 can initially supply heat to the battery 14. The chiller 16 and the cooling air radiator 20 then follow in flow direction. See Fig. 7. This sixth operating state corresponds to the aforementioned coolant-conducting connection f.

[0055] Due to the invention, the functionally complex thermal management system with the coolant system 2 for an electric vehicle can be implemented in a structurally and technically simple manner. By means of the combination according to the invention, in particular with the multi-way valve 4 and the check valve 6, it is possible to implement the aforementioned operating states of the coolant system 2a to f. Accordingly, the number of coolant lines and valves is significantly reduced. At the same time, efficiency is increased by means of the thermal management system with the coolant system 2, since the coolant system 2 enables a higher functional complexity with significantly fewer components compared to the prior art. Accordingly, a multitude of operating states, i.e. operating modes of the thermal management system, can be implemented with the simply constructed thermal management system, in particular the simply constructed coolant system 2.

[0056] The invention is not limited to the present exemplary embodiment. See, for example, the relevant statements in the introduction to the description. In contrast to the exemplary embodiment explained, other embodiments of the invention may, for example, provide for a condenser, wherein, alternatively or in addition to the chiller 16, a heat transfer connection can be established, if required, between the coolant system 2 on the one side and the refrigerant circuit on the other side. The condenser can preferably be arranged in a drive train subcircuit with the powertrain in a coolant-conducting manner.
