AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current hydrogen cooling methods are inefficient in utilizing the heat of vaporization of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for precooling hydrogen, leading to suboptimal liquefaction processes and increased risks of hydrogen leakage.

Method used

A two-stage cooling process utilizing a cycle that transfers the heat of vaporization of LNG to hydrogen through a compressor and expansion turbine, with an intermediate fluid that undergoes indirect heat exchange and expansion, allowing for precise control and efficient precooling of hydrogen to -190°C, while minimizing hydrogen leakage risks.

Benefits of technology

This method enhances the efficiency of hydrogen liquefaction by utilizing LNG refrigeration, reduces hydrogen leakage risks, and allows for precise regulation of outlet conditions, enabling effective integration of hydrogen and LNG networks.

Abstract

The invention relates to a method for cooling hydrogen, in which method liquefied natural gas is heated by indirect heat exchange in a first heat exchanger (El) with an intermediate fluid flow, the intermediate fluid flow is cooled, a hydrogen gas flow (23) is cooled in a second heat exchanger without being condensed, and a gas flow derived from the cooled intermediate fluid is heated in a second heat exchanger (E2) to a temperature of between -150°C and -90°C, which gas flow is withdrawn from the second heat exchanger at said temperature and compressed in a compressor with an inlet temperature of between -150°C and -90°C.
