Description

USER EQUIPMENT, NETWORK NODE AND METHODS FOR ENHANCED CELL (RE-) SELECTION AND HANDOVER CRITERIATECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to wireless communications and, more particularly, to enhanced designs for cell (re-) selection and handover criteria.BACKGROUND

[0002] In 5G NR systems, based on Chapter 5.2.3 of 3GPP technical specification (TS) 38.304, the cell selection criterion S is fulfilled when

[0003] Srxlev > 0 AND Squal > 0

[0004] where

[0005] Srxlev= Qrxlevmeas - (Qrxlevmin + Qrxlevminoffset) -Pcompensation-Qoffsettemp

[0006] Squal= Qqualmeas - (Qqualmin + Qqualminoffset) -Qoffsettemp

[0007] Srxlev           Cell selection RX level value (dB)

[0008] Squal            Cell selection quality value (dB)

[0009] Qrxlevmeas       Measured cell RX level value (RSRP)

[0010] Qquahneas        Measured cell quality value (RSRQ)

[0011] It can be seen that RSRP (Reference Signal Received Power) and RSRQ (Reference Signal Received Quality) are used as the measurement metrics in cell selection.

[0012] Furthermore, RSRP and RSRQ are also used as the measurement metrics in cell reselection:

[0013] - for inequal priority inter-frequency or inter-RAT cell reselection, based on Chapter 5.2.4.5 of 3GPP TS 38.304, Srxlev or Squal will be used to make a comparison with some certain threshold;

[0014] - for intra-frequency or equal priority inter-frequency cell reselection, based on Chapter 5.2.4.6 of 3GPP TS 38.304, RSRP measurement is used in the cell-ranking criterion Rs for serving cell and the cell-ranking criterion Rn for neighboring cells, while the cell selection criterion S (which utilizes RSRP and RSRQ measurements) needs to be used to determine all candidate cells that shall be ranked.

[0015] In 5G NR systems, the typical handover rule used in commercial mobile  communication systems is to utilize some measurement events defined in 3GPP TS 38.331 (e.g., Event A4 (neighboring cell becomes better than threshold) , Event A3 (neighboring cell becomes offset better than serving cell) , Event A5 (serving cell becomes worse than one threshold and neighboring cell becomes better than another threshold) , etc. ) to trigger handover process, where RSRP (or RSRQ) is chosen as the specific measurement metric.

[0016] In particular, considering an example where RSRP is used as the measurement metric and Event A3 is used to trigger handover process: if “RSRP measured at the target cell of handover” minus the sum of “RSRP measured at the serving cell” and “a pre-defined offset” becomes larger than a hypothesis, and can keep being larger than (or at least not smaller than) the hypothesis for a given period of time (called “Time To Trigger (TTT) ” ) , the handover process is triggered.

[0017] For any one given UE, in theory, the best measurement metric which can be used to check the radio condition of a wireless link between it and a candidate serving cell is SINR (signal to interference plus noise ratio) . However, RSRQ is not as useful as SINR. According to 3GPP TS 38.215, RSRQ=RSRP /  (RSSI / N) , where RSRP is the linear average over the power contributions (in Watt) of resource elements (REs) that carry reference signal, RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) comprises the linear average of the total received power (in Watt) observed only in certain OFDM symbols of measurement time resource (s) over N resource blocks (RBs) , including co-channel serving and non-serving cells, adjacent channel interference, thermal noise etc.

[0018] It can be seen that RSRQ can only provide an estimation for the ratio of “signal power” to “signal power + interference power + noise power, ” but obviously different than SINR. In addition, the numerator in RSRQ (i.e., RSRP) represents the power level per RE, while the denominator in RSRQ (i.e., RSSI) represents the power level per RB; thus, RSRQ is also a rough estimation with the unaligned resource unit for the numerator and the denominator.

[0019] In fact, based on experiences obtained in running 4G LTE networks, some key operators have explicitly expressed that RSRQ is useless (or not useful as expected) .

[0020] Then, in 3GPP TS 38.215 for 5G NR systems, measurement metrics entitled “SS-SINR” and “CSI-SINR” have been defined to measure signal power and interference power over the same set of REs. Here, the reference signals used for measuring SS-SINR and CSI-SINR are SSB (Synchronization Signal and PBCH block) and CSI-RS (Channel State Information Reference Signal) respectively. Nevertheless, the interesting thing is that, although the actual interference means the undesired signals which are propagated over the  same REs which carry the desired signals, for many scenarios, the desired and undesired reference signals are intentionally configured to transmit over orthogonal resources (with orthogonality in time / frequency / spatial / code domain) , to get a clean reception and exact detection for desired reference signals.

[0021] These scenarios can be typically illustrated by requirements of some operators on SSB configuration in commercial 5G NR deployment (e.g., China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) NR deployment at 2.6GHz band and China Telecom &China Unicom (CTC&CU) NR deployment at 3.5GHz band) . When multiple relatively narrow SSB beams are supported, SSB signals from neighboring cells need to be transmitted over orthogonal resources, where the orthogonality can be done in spatial domain (i.e., beam domain) and / or time domain.

[0022] For some key company in the communications field, its 5G RAN product only support single sector-level wide SSB beam in sub-6GHz spectrum. As a result, a dedicated “SSB time shift” feature is used to enable S SB signals from neighboring cells to be transmitted over different symbols / slots (i.e., orthogonal resources in time domain) .

[0023] For these scenarios, the “SS-SINR” or “CSI-SINR” defined in 3GPP TS 38.215 cannot work well, because when doing measurement for the desired reference signal, the undesired reference signals (which are actually interferences) cannot be measured, so that an effective estimation for SINR cannot be obtained. In another words, the estimated SINR cannot really demonstrate how large the interference is and how good / bad the radio condition is, so that the subsequent transmissions of service traffic (e.g., PDSCH) may experience severe interferences.

[0024] Further, under these scenarios, the effect of RSRQ will even be further deteriorated for most cases; that is, in this case, RSRQ actually can only provide the estimation for a ratio of “signal power” to “signal power + noise power. ” This is because, for most cases, the RSSI measurement can only be performed based on the reception of the corresponding reference signals, so that the interfering reference signals (which are transmitted over other orthogonal resources) cannot be received when performing RSSI measurement.

[0025] - upon 38.215, for SS-RSRQ: “For cell selection, according to Clause 4.1 of TS 38.211, the measurement time resources (s) for NR Carrier RSSI are not constrained. Otherwise, the measurement time resource (s) for NR Carrier RSSI are confined within S SB measurement time configuration window duration. ”

[0026] - upon 38.215, for CSI-RSRQ: “The measurement time resource (s) for CSI-RSSI  corresponds to OFDM symbols containing configured CSI-RS occasions. ”

[0032] SUMMARY

[0033] Based on the above, certain challenges currently exist with cell (re-) selection and handover processes. Because wireless propagation environments of a cellular mobile communication network are inherently interference-limited, for either cell (re-) selection or handover, it will be meaningful to design a simple but really useful method for evaluating SINR when desired and undesired reference signals are transmitted over orthogonal resources. Certain aspects of the present disclosure and their embodiments may provide solutions to these or other challenges. Particular embodiments include methods in a UE and in a network node.

[0034] According to some embodiments, a method performed by a UE is provided. The method may include performing RSRP measurement for a plurality of cells that can be detected by the UE on a frequency band; and performing a process by use of at least a first metric that is derived based on the measured RSRP for a currently checked candidate cell from the cells and a sum of the measured RSRPs for all of the other cells.

[0035] According to some embodiments, a method performed by a network node is provided. The method may include performing a process by use of at least a first metric that is derived based on a measured RSRP for a currently checked candidate cell from a plurality of cells that can be detected by a UE on a frequency band and a sum of the measured RSRPs for all of the other cells.

[0036] According to some embodiments, the first metric may be derived by calculating a ratio of the measured RSRP for the currently checked candidate cell to the sum of the measured RSRPs for all of the other cells plus noise power estimation for the UE.

[0037] According to some embodiments, the first metric may be derived by calculating a ratio of the measured RSRP for the currently checked candidate cell to the sum of the measured RSRPs for all of the other cells.

[0038] According to some embodiments, a UE is provided including one or more processors, and memory storing instructions. The instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the UE to perform a method of any one of the embodiments.

[0039] According to some embodiments, a network node is provided including one or more processors, and memory storing instructions. The instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the network node to perform a method of any one of the embodiments.

[0040] According to some embodiments, a computer-readable storage medium having computer-readable instructions stored therein is provided. The computer-readable instructions, when executed by a processor of a UE or network node, configure the UE or network node to perform a method of any one of the embodiments.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0063] In some embodiments, a computer program is provided to include instructions which, when executed by at least one processor, causes the at least one processor to carry out the functionality of the network node 200 according to any of the embodiments described herein, for example, one or more of the steps included in methods shown in Figure 5 to be described  later. In some embodiments, a carrier comprising the aforementioned computer program product is provided. The carrier is one of an electronic signal, an optical signal, a radio signal, or a computer readable storage medium (e.g., a non-transitory computer readable medium such as memory) .

[0064] In some embodiments, the network node 200 includes one or more modules, each of which is implemented in software. The module (s) provide the functionality of the network node 200 according to any of the embodiments described herein.

[0065] Figure 3 is a schematic diagram for explaining the concept of enhanced designs for cell (re-) selection and handover criteria according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For any one given UE, there may be a plurality of cells that can be detected by the UE on a frequency band, referred to as “detectable cells, ” for example, based on measurement results of some metrics (e.g., RSRP) obtained by the UE. Figure 3 shows UEj and several detectable cells including a currently checked candidate serving cell (also referred to as “currently checked candidate cell” ) and neighboring cells 1 to M, where M≥1. Here, we may denote, for the UE j, the frequency band (or briefly referred to as “frequency” ) of the currently checked candidate cell as. f, the cell index of the currently checked candidate cell as f0, and the set of cell indices of all the other detectable cells on frequency f as {f1, f2, ......, fM} . Further, RSRP measurements resulted from the reference signal transmissions of cell fm (m∈ {0, 1, ..., M} ) may be denoted as Pfm, j (in Watt) . At the UE receiver, noise power estimation may be denoted as Pnoise (in Watt) which is the mean power of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) . For the sake of simplicity, Pnoise may be used as a unified denotation for any UEs including UE j.

[0066] Now, we may propose a “novel measurement metric” that is based on the measured RSRP for the currently checked candidate cell and a sum of the measured RSRPs for all of the other detectable cells. In some embodiments, the measurement metric may be calculated as a ratio of the measured RSRP for the currently checked candidate cell to the sum of the measured RSRPs for all of the other detectable cells plus noise power estimation at the UE. With reference to Figure 3, for any one UE j, this ratio may be denoted as:

[0067]

[0068] There exist mature ways to obtain Pnoise, similar as what have been used for existing measurement metrics (e.g., RSRQ) . More details are described as below:

[0069] 1) For cell selection and reselection, UE does not need to report measurement results  to a network node, the calculation of the “novel measurement metric” is performed at the UE side. In this case, Pnoise (i.e., the mean power of AWGN at the UE receiver) can be easily estimated by UE itself.

[0070] 2) For handover, UE needs to report measurement results to a network node (e.g., base station) ; specifically, there are the following alternative ways:

[0071] 2.1) The “novel measurement metric” is directly calculated at the UE side and then reported to a network node (e.g., base station) . In this way, there is no need for the network node to estimate Pnoise.

[0072] 2.2) UE reports the measurement results of RSRPs and the estimated Pnoise to a network node (e.g., base station) ; then, the “novel measurement metric” is calculated by the network node. As a reference, similarly, for RSRQ, the typical implementation way in live networks is: UE reports RSRP and RSSI (the estimated Pnoise is included by the reported RSSI) to base station, then, RSRQ is calculated by base station.

[0073] 2.3) Another optional way: UE reports the measurement results of RSRPs; then, at a network node (e.g., base station) , as generally used in engineering design for practical systems, Pnoise is estimated as Pnoise per Hz × working bandwidth × noise figure, where Pnoise per Hz = 10-174[dBm] / 10 ×10-3 (in Watt) , working bandwidth (in Hz) is a given system parameter, noise figure = 107 [dB] / 10 or 109 [dB] / 10 when considering ITU or 3GPP SCM channel model respectively. At last, the “novel measurement metric” is calculated by the network node.

[0074] Actually, because cellular mobile communication systems (e.g., 2G / 3G / 4G / 5G / future 6G system) are inherently interference-limited, even if we ignore Pnoise, the resulting modified “novel measurement metric, ” that is, a ratio of the measured RSRP for the currently checked candidate cell to the sum of the measured RSRPs for all of the other detectable cells, will also be much more useful than the currently used RSRP and RSRQ, considering the fact that the desired and undesired reference signals are intentionally configured to transmit over orthogonal resources in practical networks.

[0075] The proposed “novel measurement metric” can effectively check SINR over a candidate serving cell in a cell (re-) selection or handover process, through exploiting RSRPs measured by the considered UE for the detectable cells on the same frequency band as that of the candidate serving cell, where the RSRPs measured for all the other detectable cells may be considered as interference with reference to the currently checked candidate serving cell. In this regard, the “novel measurement metric” may be called “RSRP-formulated SINR  estimation, ” which can work well for an effective estimation of SINR in practical networks where desired and undesired reference signals are transmitted over orthogonal resources. Because SINR is effectively taken into account, the proposed solution can have more reliable selection of a serving cell when compared with the existing approach, and the serving cell selected from the candidate cells will have more stable and reliable link with the UE. In particular, compared with the existing approach, the link failure after cell (re-) selection or handover will be greatly mitigated, and the undesirable phenomena, such as “doing a new round of cell (re-) selection soon right after completing cell (re-) selection” and “ping-pong handover effect” , can be avoided.

[0076] The use of the measurement metric “RSRP-formulated SINR estimation” in cell (re-)selection and / or handover will be described below with reference to Figs. 4 and 5.

[0077] Figure 4 is a flowchart illustrating a method 400 performed by a UE according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The UE may be structured the same as the UE in Figure 1. The method 400 may include operations of performing RSRP measurement for a plurality of cells that can be detected by the UE on a frequency band (S402) , and performing a process by use of at least a first metric that is derived based on the measured RSRP for a currently checked candidate cell from the cells and a sum of the measured RSRPs for all of the other cells (S404) . Here, the “first metric” refers to the above “novel measurement metric” or “RSRP-formulated SINR estimation. ” That is, the first metric may be derived by calculating a ratio of the measured RSRP for the currently checked candidate cell to the sum of the measured RSRPs for all of the other cells plus noise power estimation for the UE. Alternatively, the first metric may be derived by calculating a ratio of the measured RSRP for the currently checked candidate cell to the sum of the measured RSRPs for all of the other cells, without considering noise power estimation for the UE.

[0078] In some embodiments, the process may be a cell selection process, and the frequency band is a currently checked frequency band from at least one frequency band for cell selection by the UE. The operation S404 may include determining, for the currently checked candidate cell, whether a cell selection criterion is fulfilled based on comparison of the first metric and a SINR-related cell selection threshold that is a predefined threshold or a combination of multiple predefined threshold-related parameters. In one embodiment, the UE may determine, for the currently checked candidate cell, that the cell selection criterion is fulfilled if the first metric is greater than the SINR-related cell selection threshold.

[0079] In some embodiments, the UE may determine whether the cell selection criterion is fulfilled further based on the measured RSRP for the currently checked candidate cell. In this case, the operation S404 may further include determining, for the currently checked candidate cell, that the cell selection criterion is fulfilled if the first metric is greater than the SINR-related cell selection threshold and the measured RSRP is greater than a RSRP-related cell selection threshold.

[0080] In some embodiments, the UE may determine whether the cell selection criterion is fulfilled further based on the measured RSRP and a measured RSRQ for the currently checked candidate cell. In this case, the operation S404 may further include determining, for the currently checked candidate cell, that the cell selection criterion is fulfilled if the first metric is greater than the SINR-related cell selection threshold, the measured RSRP is greater than the RSRP-related cell selection threshold, and the measured RSRQ is greater than a RSRQ-related cell selection threshold.

[0081] In some embodiments, the currently checked candidate cell is the cell with the largest value of the first metric among the plurality of cells that can be detected by the UE on the frequency band, and the cell with the largest value of the first metric has the largest RSRP.

[0082] In some embodiments, the process may be a process of inequal priority inter-frequency or inter-RAT cell reselection, and the process involves a currently checked neighboring cell on a currently checked neighboring frequency band, and further involves a serving cell on a current serving band for the UE in a situation where the currently checked neighboring cell has a lower priority than the serving cell. In this case, the operation S404 may include one of:

[0083] - using the first metric to make at least one comparison with at least one corresponding SINR-related cell reselection threshold;

[0084] - using the first metric or the measured RSRP to make at least one comparison with at least one corresponding SINR-related cell reselection threshold or at least one corresponding RSRP-related cell reselection threshold respectively; or

[0085] - using the measured RSRP or a measured RSRQ to make at least one comparison with at least one corresponding RSRP-related cell reselection threshold or at least one corresponding RSRQ-related cell reselection threshold respectively, on top of which the first metric is further used to make at least one comparison with at least one corresponding SINR-related cell reselection threshold.

[0086] In some embodiments, the process may be a process of intra-frequency or equal priority inter-frequency cell reselection, the intra-frequency cell reselection process involves a current serving band on which a serving cell for the UE is camping, while the equal priority inter-frequency process involves the current serving band and a currently checked neighboring frequency band. In this case, the operation S404 may include one of:

[0087] - applying the first metric to a cell selection criterion to determine the cells that shall be ranked for cell reselection, and then performing ranking among the determined cells, which include the serving cell and / or one or more neighboring cells, by making comparisons between the values of a SINR-related cell reselection weight corresponding to the determined cells, wherein the SINR-related cell reselection weight is the first metric or a combination of the first metric and predefined parameters;

[0088] - applying the first metric and the measured RSRP to a cell selection criterion to determine the cells that shall be ranked for cell reselection, and then performing ranking among the determined cells, which include the serving cell and / or one or more neighboring cells, by making comparisons between the values of a RSRP-related cell reselection weight corresponding to the determined cells, wherein the RSRP-related cell reselection weight is the measured RSRP or a combination of the measured RSRP and predefined parameters;

[0089] - applying the first metric, the measured RSRP and a measured RSRQ to a cell selection criterion to determine the cells that shall be ranked for cell reselection, and then performing ranking among the determined cells, which include the serving cell and / or one or more neighboring cells, by making comparisons between the values of the RSRP-related cell reselection weight corresponding to the determined cells, wherein the RSRP-related cell reselection weight is the measured RSRP or a combination of the measured RSRP and predefined parameters;

[0090] - applying the first metric and the measured RSRP to a cell selection criterion to determine the cells that shall be ranked for cell reselection, and then performing ranking among the determined cells, which include the serving cell and / or one or more neighboring cells, by making comparisons between the values of the SINR-related cell reselection weight corresponding to the determined cells, wherein the  SINR-related cell reselection weight is the first metric or a combination of the first metric and predefined parameters;

[0091] - applying the first metric to a cell selection criterion to determine the cells that shall be ranked for cell reselection, and then performing ranking among the determined cells, which include the serving cell and / or one or more neighboring cells, by making comparisons between the values of the RSRP-related cell reselection weight corresponding to the determined cells, wherein the RSRP- related cell reselection weight is the measured RSRP or a combination of the measured RSRP and predefined parameters; or

[0092] - applying the first metric, the measured RSRP and the measured RSRQ to a cell selection criterion to determine the cells that shall be ranked for cell reselection, and then performing ranking among the determined cells, which include the serving cell and / or one or more neighboring cells, by making comparisons between the values of the SINR-related cell reselection weight corresponding to the determined cells, wherein the SINR-related cell reselection weight is the first metric or a combination of the first metric and predefined parameters.

[0093] In some embodiments, applying the first metric to the cell selection criterion may include: for the serving cell or a neighboring cell of the UE, determining whether the cell selection criterion is fulfilled based on comparison of the first metric and a SINR-related cell selection threshold. In some embodiments, applying the first metric and the measured RSRP to the cell selection criterion may include: for the serving cell or a neighboring cell of the UE, determining whether the cell selection criterion is fulfilled based on comparison of the first metric and the SINR-related cell selection threshold and comparison of the measured RSRP and a RSRP-related cell selection threshold. In some embodiments, applying the first metric, the measured RSRP and the measured RSRQ to the cell selection criterion may include: for the serving cell or a neighboring cell of the UE, determining whether the cell selection criterion is fulfilled based on comparison of the first metric and the SINR-related cell selection threshold, comparison of the measured RSRP and the RSRP-related cell selection threshold, and comparison of the measured RSRQ and a RSRQ-related cell selection threshold.

[0094] In some embodiments, the process may be a handover process, and the currently checked candidate cell is a target cell for the UE. In this case, in the operation S404, the UE may perform a handover to the target cell if the occurrence of one or more measurement  events holds for a given period of time. Here, the first metric is used in the one or more measurement events to make at least one comparison with at least one corresponding SINR-related handover threshold. Alternatively, the first metric or the measured RSRP is used in the one or more measurement events to make at least one comparison with at least one corresponding SINR-related handover threshold or make at least one comparison with at least one corresponding RSRP-related handover threshold respectively. Still alternatively, both of the first metric and the measured RSRP are used in the one or more measurement events to make at least one comparison with at least one corresponding SINR-related handover threshold and make at least one comparison with at least one corresponding RSRP-related handover threshold respectively. In some other embodiments, the UE may perform a handover to the target cell, if

[0095] - firstly, the occurrence of one or more measurement events holds for a given period of time; here the measured RSRP is used in the one or more measurement events to make at least one comparison with at least one corresponding RSRP-related handover threshold, and

[0096] - then the first metric calculated for the target cell is greater than the first metric calculated for the serving cell.

[0097] In some embodiments, the decision of the handover process may be made by a serving cell of the UE, and the UE may report information about the first metric to a source network node corresponding to the serving cell of the UE. In one example, the UE reports the first metric calculated by the UE to the source network node. In another example, the UE reports the RSRP measurements that correspond to the plurality of cells being on the same frequency band as the currently checked candidate cell to the source network node, and reports the noise power estimated by the UE to the source network node if the noise power at the UE side is needed for the source network node to calculate the first metric.

[0098] Figure 5 is a flowchart illustrating a method 500 performed by a network node according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The network node may be structured the same as that of Figure 2. The method 500 may include an operation of performing a process by use of at least the first metric that is derived based on a measured RSRP for a currently checked candidate cell from a plurality of cells that can be detected by a UE on a frequency band and a sum of the measured RSRPs for all of the other cells (S502) .

[0099] In some embodiments, the process may be a handover process, the network node corresponds to a serving cell of the UE, and the currently checked candidate cell is a target  cell for the UE. In order to make a decision of the handover process, the network node may receive information about the first metric reported from the UE. In one example, the network node receives from the UE the first metric calculated by the UE. In another example, the network node is reported by the UE the RSRP measurements that correspond to the plurality of cells being on the same frequency band as the currently checked candidate cell, and is also reported by the UE the noise power estimation if the noise power at the UE side is needed for calculating the first metric. Then, the network node calculates the first metric based on the reported RSRP measurements or based on both of the reported RSRP measurements and the reported noise power estimation.

[0100] In some embodiments, in the operation S502, the network node may decide a handover to the target cell if the occurrence of one or more measurement events holds for a given period of time. In some other embodiments, the network node may decide a handover to the target cell if

[0101] - firstly, the occurrence of one or more measurement events holds for a given period of time; here, the measured RSRP is used in the one or more measurement events to make at least one comparison with at least one corresponding RSRP-related handover threshold, and

[0102] - then the first metric calculated for the target cell is greater than the first metric calculated for the serving cell.

[0103] In connection with the methods in Figures 4 and 5, some examples of different options, which may be used individually or in combination, will be further discussed in detail as to the use of the measurement metric “RSRP-formulated SINR estimation” (i.e., the above first metric) in cell (re-) selection and / or handover.

[0104] Option 1 -Replace all the existing measurement metrics

[0105] In this case, only the “RSRP-formulated SINR estimation” is utilized to check the quality of a wireless channel.

[0106] ● Cell selection

[0107] - The cell selection criterion S is modified from “Srxlev > 0 AND Squal > 0” to be “Ssinr > 0” , where Ssinr = Qsinrmeas -SINRthreshold;

[0108] - Qsinrmeas is RSRP-formulated SINR estimation, and SINRthreshold is a pre-defined threshold or a combination of several pre-defined threshold-related parameters.

[0109] ● Cell reselection:

[0110] - For inequal priority inter-frequency or inter-RAT cell reselection: the criterion is modified from “using Srxlev or Squal to make comparisons with some certain thresholds” as “using only Ssinr to make comparisons with some certain thresholds” , where the values of the corresponding SINR-related thresholds also need to be designed accordingly.

[0111] - For intra-frequency or equal priority inter-frequency cell reselection: the measurement metric used in the cell-ranking criterion Rs for serving cell and the cell-ranking criterion Rn for neighboring cells is modified from RSRP to be RSRP-formulated SINR estimation; also, when determining all candidate cells that shall be ranked, the used cell selection criterion S is the modified version as described above in the scenario of “Cell selection” in Option 1.

[0112] ● Handover:

[0113] - When utilizing some certain measurement event (s) (e.g., Event A4, Event A3, Event A5, Event B1, Event B2, etc. ) to trigger a handover process, the used measurement metric is modified from RSRP (or RSRQ) to be RSRP-formulated SINR estimation.

[0114] Option 2 -Replace only RSRQ whenever RSRQ is used in the existing criteria

[0115] In this case, RSRP measurement and / or RSRP-formulated SINR estimation are utilized to check the quality of a wireless channel.

[0116] ● Cell selection:

[0117] - The cell selection criterion S is modified from “Srxlev > 0 AND Squal > 0” to be “Srxlev > 0 AND Ssinr > 0” , where Ssinr is the same as that described above in Option 1.

[0118] ● Cell reselection:

[0119] - For inequal priority inter-frequency or inter-RAT cell reselection: the criterion is modified from “using Srxlev or Squal to make comparisons with some certain thresholds” as “using Srxlev or Ssinr to make comparisons with some certain thresholds. ”

[0120] - For intra-frequency or equal priority inter-frequency cell reselection: in the cell-ranking criterion Rs for serving cell and the cell-ranking criterion Rn for neighboring cells, the measurement metric keeps using RSRP; but, when determining all candidate cells that shall be ranked, the used cell selection criterion S is the modified version as described above in the scenario of “Cell selection” in Option 2.

[0121] ● Handover:

[0122] - When utilizing some certain measurement event (s) (e.g., Event A4, Event A3, Event A5, Event B 1, Event B2, etc. ) to trigger a handover process, if RSRQ is chosen as the measurement metric, then let RSRQ be modified as RSRP-formulated SINR estimation.

[0123] Option 3 -Other flexible processings with certain reasonability

[0124] Here, with the help of RSRP-formulated SINR, the following cases have flexible processings for enhancement, which are different than the enhanced processings described in the above Options 1 and 2 but still have certain reasonability.

[0125] ● Cell selection:

[0126] - To use the enhanced design without modifications on the existing 3GPP specification for 5G systems, make the usage of “RSRP-formulated SINR estimation” be additional checking on top of the already defined checking. In particular, the cell selection criterion S is modified from “Srxlev > 0 AND Squal > 0” to be “Srxlev > 0 AND Squal > 0 AND Ssinr > 0” , where Ssinr is the same as that described in the above Option 1.

[0127] ● Cell reselection:

[0128] - To use the enhanced design without modifications on the existing 3GPP specification for 5G systems, make the usage of “RSRP-formulated SINR estimation” be additional checking on top of the already defined checking, which may include the following subcases:

[0129] for inequal priority inter-frequency or inter-RAT cell reselection: the criterion is modified from “using Srxlev or Squal to make comparisons with some certain thresholds” to “firstly using Srxlev or Squal to make comparisons with some certain thresholds (same as the existing way) and then using Ssinr to make additional comparisons with some certain thresholds; ”

[0130] for intra-frequency or equal priority inter-frequency cell reselection: in the cell-ranking criterion Rs for serving cell and the cell-ranking criterion Rn for neighboring cells, still use RSRP as the measurement metric (same as the existing way) ; when determining all candidate cells that shall be ranked, the used cell selection criterion S is the modified version  as described above in the scenario of “Cell selection” in Option 3.

[0131] - There may be other flexible processings for the case of “intra-frequency or equal priority inter-frequency cell reselection” , which need to modify the existing 3GPP specification and may include the following subcases:

[0132] in the cell-ranking criterion Rs for serving cell and the cell-ranking criterion Rn for neighboring cells, still use RSRP as the measurement metric (same as the existing way) ; but, when determining all candidate cells that shall be ranked, the used cell selection criterion S is the modified version as described above in the scenario of “Cell selection” in Option 1;

[0133] in the cell-ranking criterion Rs for serving cell and the cell-ranking criterion Rn for neighboring cells, the measurement metric is modified from RSRP to be RSRP-formulated SINR estimation; further, when determining all candidate cells that shall be ranked, the used cell selection criterion S is the modified version as described above in the scenario of “Cell selection” in Option 2;

[0134] in the cell-ranking criterion Rs for serving cell and the cell-ranking criterion Rn for neighboring cells, the measurement metric is modified from RSRP to be RSRP-formulated S.[NR estimation; further, when determining all candidate cells that shall be ranked, the used cell selection criterion S i s the modified version as described above in the scenario of “Cell selection” in Option 3.

[0135] ● Handover:

[0136] - To use the enhanced design without modifications on the existing 3GPP specification for 5G systems, make the usage of “RSRP-formulated SINR estimation” be additional checking on top of the already defined checking. In particular, when utilizing some certain measurement event (s) (e.g., Event A4, Event A3, Event A5, Event B1, Event B2, etc. ) to trigger a handover process, use both RSRP and RSRP-formulated SINR estimation as the measurement metrics to make comparisons with respective threshold (s) ; then, only when both measurement metrics can keep making the corresponding measurement event (s) occur during the TTT, the handover process is triggered.

[0137] - There is another flexible processing which also does not need to modify the existing 3GPP specification. When utilizing some certain measurement event (s) (e.g., Event A4, Event A3, Event A5, Event B1, Event B2, etc. ) to trigger a handover process, firstly use only RSRP as the measurement metric to make comparison (s) with the corresponding threshold (s) ; then, if the measured RSRP can keep making the corresponding measurement event (s) occur during the TTT, make an additional comparison of the RSRP-formulated  SINR estimation between the current serving cell and the target cell of handover. The handover process will be eventually triggered if the RSRP-formulated SINR estimation at the target cell of handover is larger.

[0138] Implementation issues

[0139] Hereafter, implementation issues will be discussed for different scenarios in connection with Figure 4.

[0140] ● Cell selection:

[0141] For cell selection, the number of RSRP measurements performed for the plurality of cells on the currently checked frequency band (as in the operation S402 of Figure 4) may be at least a first number. This first number is configured at the UE side if the UE has never entered into an RRC-connected state or configured by a network node if the UE entered and then left an RRC-connected state with respect to the network node. Examples are given as follows:

[0142] - for cell selection where UE has never entered into RRC-connected state, a parameter “minimum #ofRSRP measurements” can be set at the UE side for each supported frequency band, to let UE collect enough information of the interfering cells, to make “RSRP-formulated SINR estimation” really play a role; .

[0143] - for cell selection where UE entered and then left RRC-connected state for the current state, the parameter “minimum #of RSRP measurements” can be configured by the network node, for example in RRC Release message, for each supported frequency band.

[0144] Here, the value of the parameter “minimum #of RSRP measurements” (also referred to as the first number for the scenario of “Cell selection” ) can be configured reasonably and properly taking into account requirements in practical implementations.

[0145] ● Cell reselection:

[0146] For the cell reselection process, the number of RSRP measurements performed for the plurality of cells on the currently checked frequency band (as in the operation S402 of Figure 4) may be at least a second number. This second number can be set by reusing a parameter in a corresponding system information sent by the serving cell of the UE if the neighboring cell list for the currently checked frequency band is provided by the serving cell or can be configured by the serving cell if the neighboring cell list for the currently checked frequency band is not provided by the serving cell. Examples are given as follows:

[0147] - in SIB3 (carrying NeighborCellList of intra-frequency cell reselection) , SIB4 (carrying NeighborCellList of inter-frequency cell reselection) , and SIB5 (carrying  NeighborCellList of inter-RAT cell reselection) messages, there already exist parameters maxCellIntra, maxCellInter, and maxCellEUTRA; the values of these parameters can be more reasonably set when considering the usage of “RSRP-formulated SINR estimation” . For example, when the really useful SINR metric ( “RSRP-formulated SINR estimation” ) is taken into account, the value of each of these parameters does not need to be too large; probably, a value in the range [3, 5] is enough.

[0148] - According to Chapter 4.2.1 of 3GPP TS 38.133, “for intra-frequency and inter-frequency cells the serving cell may not provide explicit neighbor list but carrier frequency information and bandwidth information only” . Thus, for intra-frequency or inter-frequency cell reselection, if no neighbor list is provided by the serving cell, a parameter “minimum #of RSRP measurements” can be configured for each supported frequency band, like what have been described above for the scenario of “Cell selection” .

[0149] ● Handover:

[0150] For the plurality of cells which are on the same frequency band as the currently checked candidate cell, the RSRP measurement (as in the operation S402 of Figure 4) is performed according to a measurement configuration for the UE configured by a source network node that corresponds to a serving cell of the UE. Then, the RSRP measurement may not be performed anymore with the measurement configuration being released, if the number of the measured RSRPs reaches a predefined value or a predefined timer expires. Examples are given as follows:

[0151] - to let the considered RRC-connected UE report its measured RSRPs for all the detectable cells over a checked frequency band, the network node will perform a corresponding measurement configuration for the considered UE through the air interface.

[0152] When inter-frequency measurement is needed, a dedicated measurement gap in time domain will be used so that there will exist a loss of usable resource in time domain. To avoid the unacceptable loss of usable resource in time domain, the following strategies can be exploited:

[0153] i) define a maximum number of RSRP measurements resulted from detectable cells (except for the candidate serving cell) , for each checked frequency band; once this maximum number is reached, the corresponding measurement event (s) is released; or

[0154] ii) set a dedicated timer to release the corresponding measurement event (s) .

[0155] So far, embodiments have been described to provide effective approaches for evaluating SINR in practical networks where the desired and undesired reference signals are  transmitted over orthogonal resources, and thus provide enhanced designs for cell (re-)selection and handover criteria, which allows more reliable selection of serving cell when compared with the existing approach.

[0156] Figure 6 shows an example of a communication system QQ100 in accordance with some embodiments.

[0157] In the example, the communication system QQ100 includes a telecommunication network QQ102 that includes an access network QQ104, such as a radio access network (RAN) , and a core network QQ106, which includes one or more core network nodes QQ108. The access network QQ104 includes one or more access network nodes, such as network nodes QQ110a and QQ110b (one or more of which may be generally referred to as network nodes QQ110) , or any other similar 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) access nodes or non-3GPP access points. Moreover, as will be appreciated by those of skill in the art, a network node is not necessarily limited to an implementation in which a radio portion and a baseband portion are supplied and integrated by a single vendor. Thus, it will be understood that network nodes include disaggregated implementations or portions thereof. For example, in some embodiments, the telecommunication network QQ102 includes one or more Open-RAN (ORAN) network nodes. An ORAN network node is a node in the telecommunication network QQ102 that supports an ORAN specification (e.g., a specification published by the O-RAN Alliance, or any similar organization) and may operate alone or together with other nodes to implement one or more functionalities of any node in the telecommunication network QQ102, including one or more network nodes QQ110 and / or core network nodes QQ108.

[0158] Examples of an ORAN network node include an open radio unit (O-RU) , an open distributed unit (O-DU) , an open central unit (O-CU) , including an O-CU control plane (O-CU-CP) or an O-CU user plane (O-CU-UP) , a RAN intelligent controller (near-real time or non-real time) hosting software or software plug-ins, such as a near-real time control application (e.g., xApp) or a non-real time control application (e.g., rApp) , or any combination thereof (the adjective “open” designating support of an ORAN specification) . The network node may support a specification by, for example, supporting an interface defined by the ORAN specification, such as an A1, F1, W1, E1, E2, X2, Xn interface, an open fronthaul user plane interface, or an open fronthaul management plane interface. Moreover, an ORAN access node may be a logical node in a physical node. Furthermore, an ORAN network node may be implemented in a virtualization environment (described further  below) in which one or more network functions are virtualized. For example, the virtualization environment may include an O-Cloud computing platform orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an 0-2 interface defined by the O-RAN Alliance or comparable technologies. The network nodes QQ110 facilitate direct or indirect connection of user equipment (UE) , such as by connecting UEs QQ112a, QQ112b, QQ112c, and QQ112d (one or more of which may be generally referred to as UEs QQ112) to the core network QQ106 over one or more wireless connections.

[0159] Example wireless communications over a wireless connection include transmitting and / or receiving wireless signals using electromagnetic waves, radio waves, infrared waves, and / or other types of signals suitable for conveying information without the use of wires, cables, or other material conductors. Moreover, in different embodiments, the communication system QQ100 may include any number of wired or wireless networks, network nodes, UEs, and / or any other components or systems that may facilitate or participate in the communication of data and / or signals whether via wired or wireless connections. The communication system QQ100 may include and / or interface with any type of communication, telecommunication, data, cellular, radio network, and / or other similar type of system.

[0160] The UEs QQ112 may be any of a wide variety of communication devices, including wireless devices arranged, configured, and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with the network nodes QQ110 and other communication devices. Similarly, the network nodes QQ110 are arranged, capable, configured, and / or operable to communicate directly or indirectly with the UEs QQ112 and / or with other network nodes or equipment in the telecommunication network QQ102 to enable and / or provide network access, such as wireless network access, and / or to perform other functions, such as administration in the telecommunication network QQ102.

[0161] In the depicted example, the core network QQ106 connects the network nodes QQ110 to one or more hosts, such as host QQ116. These connections may be direct or indirect via one or more intermediary networks or devices. In other examples, network nodes may be directly coupled to hosts. The core network QQ106 includes one more core network nodes (e.g., core network node QQ108) that are structured with hardware and software components. Features of these components may be substantially similar to those described with respect to the UEs, network nodes, and / or hosts, such that the descriptions thereof are generally applicable to the corresponding components of the core network node QQ108. Example core network nodes include functions of one or more of a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) ,  Mobility Management Entity (MME) , Home Subscriber Server (HSS) , Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) , Session Management Function (SMF) , Authentication Server Function (AUSF) , Subscription Identifier De-concealing function (SIDF) , Unified Data Management (UDM) , Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP) , Network Exposure Function (NEF) , and / or a User Plane Function (UPF) .

[0162] The host QQ116 may be under the ownership or control of a service provider other than an operator or provider of the access network QQ104 and / or the telecommunication network QQ102, and may be operated by the service provider or on behalf of the service provider. The host QQ116 may host a variety of applications to provide one or more service. Examples of such applications include live and pre-recorded audio / video content, data collection services such as retrieving and compiling data on various ambient conditions detected by a plurality of UEs, analytics functionality, social media, functions for controlling or otherwise interacting with remote devices, functions for an alarm and surveillance center, or any other such function performed by a server.

[0163] As a whole, the communication system QQ100 of Figure 6 enables connectivity between the UEs, network nodes, and hosts. In that sense, the communication system may be configured to operate according to predefined rules or procedures, such as specific standards that include, but are not limited to: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) ; Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) ; Long Term Evolution (LTE) , and / or other suitable 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G standards, or any applicable future generation standard (e.g., 6G); wireless local area network (WLAN) standards, such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standards (WiFi) ; and / or any other appropriate wireless communication standard, such as the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) , Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Near Field Communication (NFC) ZigBee, LiFi, and / or any low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) standards such as LoRa and Sigfox.

[0164] In some examples, the telecommunication network QQ102 is a cellular network that implements 3GPP standardized features. Accordingly, the telecommunications network QQ102 may support network slicing to provide different logical networks to different devices that are connected to the telecommunication network QQ102. For example, the telecommunications network QQ102 may provide Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) services to some UEs, while providing Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services to other UEs, and / or Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC)  / Massive IoT services to yet further UEs.

[0165] In some examples, the UEs QQ112 are configured to transmit and / or receive information without direct human interaction. For instance, a UE may be designed to transmit information to the access network QQ104 on a predetermined schedule, when triggered by an internal or external event, or in response to requests from the access network QQ104. Additionally, a UE may be configured for operating in single-or multi-RAT or multi-standard mode. For example, a UE may operate with any one or combination of Wi-Fi, NR (New Radio) and LTE, i.e. being configured for multi-radio dual connectivity (MR-DC) , such as E-UTRAN (Evolved-UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) New Radio -Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) .

[0166] In the example, the hub QQ114 communicates with the access network QQ104 to facilitate indirect communication between one or more UEs (e.g., UE QQ112c and / or QQ112d) and network nodes (e.g., network node QQ11Ob) . In some examples, the hub QQ114 may be a controller, router, content source and analytics, or any of the other communication devices described herein regarding UEs. For example, the hub QQ114 may be a broadband router enabling access to the core network QQ106 for the UEs. As another example, the hub QQ114 may be a controller that sends commands or instructions to one or more actuators in the UEs. Commands or instructions may be received from the UEs, network nodes QQ110, or by executable code, script, process, or other instructions in the hub QQ114. As another example, the hub QQ114 may be a data collector that acts as temporary storage for UE data and, in some embodiments, may perform analysis or other processing of the data. As another example, the hub QQ114 may be a content source. For example, for a UE that is a VR headset, display, loudspeaker or other media delivery device, the hub QQ114 may retrieve VR assets, video, audio, or other media or data related to sensory information via a network node, which the hub QQ114 then provides to the UE either directly, after performing local processing, and / or after adding additional local content. In still another example, the hub QQ114 acts as a proxy server or orchestrator for the UEs, in particular if one or more of the UEs are low energy IoT devices.

[0167] The hub QQ114 may have a constant / persistent or intermittent connection to the network node QQ11Ob. The hub QQ114 may also allow for a different communication scheme and / or schedule between the hub QQ114 and UEs (e.g., UE QQ112c and / or QQ112d) , and between the hub QQ114 and the core network QQ106. In other examples, the hub QQ114 is connected to the core network QQ106 and / or one or more UEs via a wired connection. Moreover, the hub QQ114 may be configured to connect to an M2M service  provider over the access network QQ104 and / or to another UE over a direct connection. In some scenarios, UEs may establish a wireless connection with the network nodes QQ110 while still connected via the hub QQ114 via a wired or wireless connection. In some embodiments, the hub QQ114 may be a dedicated hub -that is, a hub whose primary function is to route communications to / from the UEs from / to the network node QQ110b. In other embodiments, the hub QQ114 may be a non-dedicated hub -that is, a device which is capable of operating to route communications between the UEs and network node QQ110b, but which is additionally capable of operating as a communication start and / or end point for certain data channels.

[0168] Figure 7 shows a UE QQ200 in accordance with some embodiments. As used herein, a UE refers to a device capable, configured, arranged and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with network nodes and / or other UEs. Examples of a UE include, but are not limited to, a smart phone, mobile phone, cell phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phone, wireless local loop phone, desktop computer, personal digital assistant (PDA) , wireless cameras, gaming console or device, music storage device, playback appliance, wearable terminal device, wireless endpoint, mobile station, tablet, laptop, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , smart device, wireless customer-premise equipment (CPE) , vehicle, vehicle-mounted or vehicle embedded / integrated wireless device, etc. Other examples include any UE identified by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) , including a narrow band internet of things (NB-IoT) UE, a machine type communication (MTC) UE, and / or an enhanced MTC (eMTC) UE.

[0180] A UE, when in the form of an Internet of Things (IoT) device, may be a device for use in one or more application domains, these domains comprising, but not limited to, city wearable technology, extended industrial application and healthcare. Non-limiting examples of such an IoT device are a device which is or which is embedded in: a connected refrigerator or freezer, a TV, a connected lighting device, an electricity meter, a robot vacuum cleaner, a voice controlled smart speaker, a home security camera, a motion detector, a thermostat, a smoke detector, a door / window sensor, a flood / moisture sensor, an electrical door lock, a connected doorbell, an air conditioning system like a heat pump, an autonomous vehicle, a surveillance system, a weather monitoring device, a vehicle parking monitoring device, an electric vehicle charging station, a smart watch, a fitness tracker, a head-mounted display for Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR) , a wearable for tactile augmentation or sensory enhancement, a water sprinkler, an animal-or item-tracking device, a sensor for monitoring a plant or animal, an industrial robot, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) , and any kind of medical device, like a heart rate monitor or a remote controlled surgical robot. A UE in the form of an IoT device comprises circuitry and / or software in dependence of the intended application of the IoT device in addition to other components as described in relation to the UE QQ200 shown in Figure 7.

[0181] As yet another specific example, in an IoT scenario, a UE may represent a machine or other device that performs monitoring and / or measurements, and transmits the results of such monitoring and / or measurements to another UE and / or a network node. The UE may in this case be an M2M device, which may in a 3GPP context be referred to as an MTC device. As one particular example, the UE may implement the 3GPP NB-IoT standard. In other scenarios, a UE may represent a vehicle, such as a car, a bus, a truck, a ship and an airplane, or other equipment that is capable of monitoring and / or reporting on its operational status or other functions associated with its operation.

[0182] In practice, any number of UEs may be used together with respect to a single use case. For example, a first UE might be or be integrated in a drone and provide the drone’s speed information (obtained through a speed sensor) to a second UE that is a remote controller operating the drone. When the user makes changes from the remote controller, the first UE may adjust the throttle on the drone (e.g. by controlling an actuator) to increase or decrease the drone’s speed. The first and / or the second UE can also include more than one of the functionalities described above. For example, a UE might comprise the sensor and the  actuator, and handle communication of data for both the speed sensor and the actuators.

[0183] Figure 8 shows a network node QQ300 in accordance with some embodiments. As used herein, network node refers to equipment capable, configured, arranged and / or operable to communicate directly or indirectly with a UE and / or with other network nodes or equipment, in a telecommunication network. Examples of network nodes include, but are not limited to, access points (APs) (e.g., radio access points) , base stations (BSs) (e.g., radio base stations, Node Bs, evolved Node Bs (eNBs) and NR NodeBs (gNBs) ) , O-RAN nodes or components of an O-RAN node (e.g., O-RU, O-DU, O-CU) .

[0184] Base stations may be categorized based on the amount of coverage they provide (or, stated differently, their transmit power level) and so, depending on the provided amount of coverage, may be referred to as femto base stations, pico base stations, micro base stations, or macro base stations. A base station may be a relay node or a relay donor node controlling a relay. A network node may also include one or more (or all) parts of a distributed radio base station such as centralized digital units, distributed units (e.g., in an O-RAN access node) and / or remote radio units (RRUs) , sometimes referred to as Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) . Such remote radio units may or may not be integrated with an antenna as an antenna integrated radio. Parts of a distributed radio base station may also be referred to as nodes in a distributed antenna system (DAS) .

[0188] In some embodiments, the processing circuitry QQ302 includes a system on a chip (SOC) . In some embodiments, the processing circuitry QQ302 includes one or more of radio frequency (RF) transceiver circuitry QQ312 and baseband processing circuitry QQ314. In some embodiments, the radio frequency (RF) transceiver circuitry QQ312 and the baseband processing circuitry QQ314 may be on separate chips (or sets of chips) , boards, or units, such as radio units and digital units. In alternative embodiments, part or all of RF transceiver circuitry QQ312 and baseband processing circuitry QQ314 may be on the same chip or set of chips, boards, or units.

[0189] The memory QQ304 may comprise any form of volatile or non-volatile computer-readable memory including, without limitation, persistent storage, solid-state memory, remotely mounted memory, magnetic media, optical media, random access memory (RAM) , read-only memory (ROM) , mass storage media (for example, a hard disk) , removable storage media (for example, a flash drive, a Compact Disk (CD) or a Digital Video Disk (DVD) ) , and / or any other volatile or non-volatile, non-transitory device-readable and / or computer-executable memory devices that store information, data, and / or instructions that may be used by the processing circuitry QQ302. The memory QQ304 may store any suitable instructions, data, or information, including a computer program, software, an application including one or  more of logic, rules, code, tables, and / or other instructions capable of being executed by the processing circuitry QQ302 and utilized by the network node QQ300. The memory QQ304 may be used to store any calculations made by the processing circuitry QQ302 and / or any data received via the communication interface QQ306. In some embodiments, the processing circuitry QQ302 and memory QQ304 is integrated.

[0190] The communication interface QQ306 is used in wired or wireless communication of signaling and / or data between a network node, access network, and / or UE. As illustrated, the communication interface QQ306 comprises port (s)  / terminal (s) QQ316 to send and receive data, for example to and from a network over a wired connection. The communication interface QQ306 also includes radio front-end circuitry QQ318 that may be coupled to, or in certain embodiments a part of, the antenna QQ310. Radio front-end circuitry QQ318 comprises filters QQ320 and amplifiers QQ322. The radio front-end circuitry QQ318 may be connected to an antenna QQ310 and processing circuitry QQ302. The radio front-end circuitry may be configured to condition signals communicated between antenna QQ310 and processing circuitry QQ302. The radio front-end circuitry QQ318 may receive digital data that i s to be sent out to other network nodes or UEs via a wireless connection. The radio front-end circuitry QQ318 may convert the digital data into a radio signal having the appropriate channel and bandwidth parameters using a combination of filters QQ320 and / or amplifiers QQ322. The radio signal may then be transmitted via the antenna QQ310. Similarly, when receiving data, the antenna QQ310 may collect radio signals which are then converted into digital data by the radio front-end circuitry QQ318. The digital data may be passed to the processing circuitry QQ302. In other embodiments, the communication interface may comprise different components and / or different combinations of components.

[0191] In certain alternative embodiments, the network node QQ300 does not include separate radio front-end circuitry QQ318, instead, the processing circuitry QQ302 includes radio front-end circuitry and is connected to the antenna QQ310. Similarly, in some embodiments, all or some of the RF transceiver circuitry QQ312 is part of the communication interface QQ306. In still other embodiments, the communication interface QQ306 includes one or more ports or terminals QQ316, the radio front-end circuitry QQ318, and the RF transceiver circuitry QQ312, as part of a radio unit (not shown) , and the communication interface QQ306 communicates with the baseband processing circuitry QQ314, which is part of a digital unit (not shown) .

[0199] Figure 10 is a block diagram illustrating a virtualization environment QQ500 in which functions implemented by some embodiments may be virtualized. In the present context, virtualizing means creating virtual versions of apparatuses or devices which may include virtualizing hardware platforms, storage devices and networking resources. As used herein,  virtualization can be applied to any device described herein, or components thereof, and relates to an implementation in which at least a portion of the functionality is implemented as one or more virtual components. Some or all of the functions described herein may be implemented as virtual components executed by one or more virtual machines (VMs) implemented in one or more virtual environments QQ500 hosted by one or more of hardware nodes, such as a hardware computing device that operates as a network node, UE, core network node, or host. Further, in embodiments in which the virtual node does not require radio connectivity (e.g., a core network node or host) , then the node may be entirely virtualized. In some embodiments, the virtualization environment QQ500 includes components defined by the O-RAN Alliance, such as an O-Cloud environment orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an 0-2 interface.

[0200] Applications QQ502 (which may alternatively be called software instances, virtual appliances, network functions, virtual nodes, virtual network functions, etc. ) are run in the virtualization environment Q400 to implement some of the features, functions, and / or benefits of some of the embodiments disclosed herein.

[0201] Hardware QQ504 includes processing circuitry, memory that stores software and / or instructions executable by hardware processing circuitry, and / or other hardware devices as described herein, such as a network interface, input / output interface, and so forth. Software may be executed by the processing circuitry to instantiate one or more virtualization layers QQ506 (also referred to as hypervisors or virtual machine monitors (VMMs) ) , provide VMs QQ508a and QQ508b (one or more of which may be generally referred to as VMs QQ508) , and / or perform any of the functions, features and / or benefits described in relation with some embodiments described herein. The virtualization layer QQ506 may present a virtual operating platform that appears like networking hardware to the VMs QQ508.

[0202] The VMs QQ508 comprise virtual processing, virtual memory, virtual networking or interface and virtual storage, and may be run by a corresponding virtualization layer QQ506. Different embodiments of the instance of a virtual appliance QQ502 may be implemented on one or more of VMs QQ508, and the implementations may be made in different ways. Virtualization of the hardware is in some contexts referred to as network function virtualization (NFV) . NFV may be used to consolidate many network equipment types onto industry standard high volume server hardware, physical switches, and physical storage, which can be located in data centers, and customer premise equipment.

[0203] In the context ofNFV, a VM QQ508 may be a software implementation of a physical  machine that runs programs as if they were executing on a physical, non-virtualized machine. Each of the VMs QQ508, and that part of hardware QQ504 that executes that VM, be it hardware dedicated to that VM and / or hardware shared by that VM with others of the VMs, forms separate virtual network elements. Still in the context of NFV, a virtual network function is responsible for handling specific network functions that run in one or more VMs QQ508 on top of the hardware QQ504 and corresponds to the application QQ502.

[0204] Hardware QQ504 may be implemented in a standalone network node with generic or specific components. Hardware QQ504 may implement some functions via virtualization. Alternatively, hardware QQ504 may be part of a larger cluster of hardware (e.g. such as in a data center or CPE) where many hardware nodes work together and are managed via management and orchestration QQ510, which, among others, oversees lifecycle management of applications QQ502. In some embodiments, hardware QQ504 is coupled to one or more radio units that each includes one or more transmitters and one or more receivers that may be coupled to one or more antennas. Radio units may communicate directly with other hardware nodes via one or more appropriate network interfaces and may be used in combination with the virtual components to provide a virtual node with radio capabilities, such as a radio access node or a base station. In some embodiments, some signaling can be provided with the use of a control system QQ512 which may alternatively be used for communication between hardware nodes and radio units.

[0205] Although the computing devices described herein (e.g., UEs, network nodes, hosts) may include the illustrated combination of hardware components, other embodiments may comprise computing devices with different combinations of components. It is to be understood that these computing devices may comprise any suitable combination of hardware and / or software needed to perform the tasks, features, functions and methods disclosed herein. Determining, calculating, obtaining or similar operations described herein may be performed by processing circuitry, which may process information by, for example, converting the obtained information into other information, comparing the obtained information or converted information to information stored in the network node, and / or performing one or more operations based on the obtained information or converted information, and as a result of said processing making a determination. Moreover, while components are depicted as single boxes located within a larger box, or nested within multiple boxes, in practice, computing devices may comprise multiple different physical components that make up a single illustrated component, and functionality may be partitioned between separate  components. For example, a communication interface may be configured to include any of the components described herein, and / or the functionality of the components may be partitioned between the processing circuitry and the communication interface. In another example, non-computationally intensive functions of any of such components may be implemented in software or firmware and computationally intensive functions may be implemented in hardware.

[0206] In certain embodiments, some or all of the functionality described herein may be provided by processing circuitry executing instructions stored on in memory, which in certain embodiments may be a computer program product in the form of a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium. In alternative embodiments, some or all of the functionality may be provided by the processing circuitry without executing instructions stored on a separate or discrete device-readable storage medium, such as in a hard-wired manner. In any of those particular embodiments, whether executing instructions stored on a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium or not, the processing circuitry can be configured to perform the described functionality. The benefits provided by such functionality are not limited to the processing circuitry alone or to other components of the computing device, but are enjoyed by the computing device as a whole, and / or by end users and a wireless network generally.
