TECHNICAL FIELD
[0002] The present disclosure is directed to systems, kits, assemblies, and methods relating to a bassinet for holding a child, and more particularly it is directed to a bassinet that is connectable to a playard and adjustable between different configurations. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] Approximately 3,500 infants die from sleep-related infant deaths annually in the United States. Research indicates that sleep-related death can occur when an infant with an intrinsic vulnerability to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is placed in an unsafe sleep environment. There was a substantial decline in the number of sleep-related infant deaths in the 1990’s as the result of a national educational campaign to put babies on their backs to sleep; however, the number of sleep-related infant deaths has remained consistent since the year 2000. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that parents sleep in the same room, but not in the same bed as a baby, preferably for at least the first six months. The AAP understands and respects that many parents choose to routinely bed share for a variety of reasons, including facilitation of breastfeeding, cultural preferences, and a belief that it is better and safer for their infant. However, the AAP is unable to recommend bed sharing under any circumstances.
[0004] Therefore, there is a need for a versatile and safe child sleeping device, such as a bassinet, that can be positioned next to the parent’s bed, to aid in a safe sleeping environment for infants and babies alike. 8548153.1SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0005] According to one aspect, the present disclosure is directed to a bassinet which is connectable to a playard. The bassinet can include a frame and a height adjustment mechanism connected to the frame. The height adjustment mechanism can be connectable to the playard, and the height adjustment mechanism is height adjustable to adjust a height of the bassinet relative to a top rail of the playard.
[0006] In one aspect, the bassinet can include a first height adjustment mechanism connected to a first side of the frame, and a second height adjustment mechanism connected to a second side of the frame. The first side of the frame and the second side of the frame are opposite lateral sides of the frame.

The bassinet and playard combination can provide multiple modes of use and provide a separate sleeping surface for a child. The multiple modes of use include, for example: a pack-n-play (PnP) or playard mode, an adjustable height bed-side sleeper mode, an adjustable height bassinet mode, a stand-alone bassinet mode, and a Montessori bed mode for a developing child. The multiple modes of the bassinet and playard combination increases the range of beds and bed heights (of the parents) with which the bassinet and playard combination can be utilized with. For example, for a parent bed having a greater height from the floor, the bassinet can be raised to a higher position relative to the playard to align the bassinet and playard combination with the higher parent bed. Similarly, for a parent bed having a lower height from the floor, the bassinet can be lowered to a lower position relative to the playard to align the bassinet and playard combination with the lower parent bed.

[0054] The bassinet 100 includes a frame 102 and a base 104. The frame 102 includes a plurality of corner supports 106, two top bars 108, two or more bottom bars 110, a rear bar 112, and a drop bar 114. As illustrated, the plurality of corner supports 106 can comprise four corner supports 106. Each of the corner supports 106 can have a generally L-shaped cross-sectional shape, viewing from the top down when the bassinet 100 is in a standing or in-use position. A lower end or surface of each of the corner supports 106 can be configured for contacting a supporting surface to support the bassinet 100 when in the upright, in-use position and on a ground or other supporting surface. The corner supports 106 can be arranged such that the bassinet 100 has a generally rectangular shape, viewing from the top down when in the upright, in-use position.
[0055] Top bars 108 can be coupled to and extend between a front corner support 106 and a rear corner support 106. The top bars 108 can be positioned adjacent and extend between an upper end or surface of the corner supports 106, opposite the lower end or surface of the corner supports 106. As illustrated, in some examples, the top bars 108 can be tubes or bars that have a curved shape extending between the front corner support 106 and the rear corner support 106. In other examples, the top bars 108 can be tubes or bars that are straight and extend between the front corner support 106 and the rear corner support 106. [0057] The drop bar 114 is coupled to and extends between the two front corner supports 106 of the bassinet 100. As such, the drop bar 114 is positioned offset from and generally parallel to the rear bar 112, and the drop bar 114 is positioned generally perpendicular or orthogonal with the top bars 108. In other words, the top bars 108 can be described as being positioned along first and second sides of the frame 102 of the bassinet 100, the drop bar 114 can be described as being positioned along a third side of the frame 102 of the bassinet 100, and the rear bar 112 can be described as being positioned along a fourth side of the frame 102 of the bassinet 100. [0058] The drop bar 114 is configured to transition between a first position (FIG. 1A) and a second position (FIG. 1B). The first position of the drop bar 114 can also be referred to as the top position of the drop bar 114, meaning the drop bar 114 is positioned at its top or highest position relative to the base 104. The second position of the drop bar 114 can also be referred to as the bottom position of the drop bar 114, meaning the drop bar 114 is positioned at its bottom or lowest position relative to the base 104. When the drop bar 114 is positioned in the bottom position, the drop bar 114 is positioned vertically lower than the rear bar 112 and closer to the base 104 of the bassinet 100 than the rear bar 112. The drop bar 114 can transition between the top position (FIG.1A) and the bottom position (FIG. 1B) to adjust a height of the drop bar 114 relative to a height of a parent’s bed, and also to allow easy access to the child positioned within the bassinet 100 and laying upon the base 104.
[0059] As illustrated best in FIGS.1A-1B, the drop bar 114 can be positioned between drop bar slides 116, which are coupled at each distal end of the drop bar 114. Specifically, a portion of each of the drop bar slides 116 can be positioned and slidably coupled within a channel 118 in each of the two front corner supports 106. The lock 120 can extend through and be secured within apertures in the front corner supports 106 and the drop bar slides 116, to prevent vertical translation of the drop bar 114 relative to the base 104 or corner supports 106. To adjust the height of the drop bar 114, a user removes the locks 120 from the apertures in the front corner supports 106 and the drop bar slides 116, the user adjusts the drop bar 114 height to the desired position, and the user inserts the locks 120 back into the apertures in the front corner supports 106 and the drop bar slides 116 to secure and hold the drop bar 114 at the desired height. As will be appreciated by those having skill in the art, the lock 120 can be a pin, dowel, clevis pin, clip, latch, or other component capable of securing the height of the drop bar 114. The drop bar 114 is configured to transition between the first (top) position and the second (bottom) position independently of the height adjustable height adjustment mechanism 122, discussed further below.
[0061] Referring again to FIGS. 1A-1B, the bassinet 100 can also include at least one height adjustment mechanism 122 that is connected to the frame 102. Further, the height adjustment mechanism 122 is connectable to and separable from a playard 150 to adjust a height of the bassinet 100 relative to a top rail of the playard 150, discussed further below. As illustrated, in some examples, the bassinet 100 can include a first height adjustment mechanism 122 connected to a first side of the frame 102 and a second height adjustment mechanism 122 connected to a second side of the frame 102, with the first side of the frame 102 being an opposite lateral side of the frame 102 as the second side. The first and second height adjustment mechanisms 122 are identical, and therefore in an effort to avoid redundancy only a discussion of one of the height adjustment mechanisms 122 is discussed below. With that said, it is to be understood that the following disclosure equally applies to both height adjustment mechanisms 122 of the bassinet 100.
[0062] The height adjustment mechanism 122 of FIGS. 1A-B, 2A-B, and 3 can include an adjustment bar 124, a first slide 126, a second slide 128, and a coupler 130. The adjustment bar 124 can be positioned between the first slide 126 8548153.1and the second slide 128, and the first slide 126 and the second slide 128 can be securely coupled to opposite distal ends of the adjustment bar 124. The first slide 126 and the second slide 128 are configured to facilitate altering a height of the adjustment bar 124 relative to the corner supports 106, the base 104, and the overall frame 102 of the bassinet 100. Specifically, a portion of each of the first slide 126 and the second slide 128 can be positioned and slidably coupled within a groove 132 in each of the front and rear corner supports 106. The grooves 132 can be positioned and oriented with the corner supports 106 such that the grooves 132 are generally orthogonal to the channels 118 within the front corner supports 106. The grooves 132 can be vertically extending grooves 132 that extend at least partially into the corner supports 106 and in a vertical direction from the lower end of the corner supports 106 towards the upper end of the corner supports 106. Therefore, the first slide 126 and the second slide 128 are configured to slide vertically within the grooves 132 of the corner supports 106 to facilitate adjusting or altering a height of the adjustment bar 124 relative to the corner supports 106, the base 104, and the overall frame 102 of the bassinet 100.
[0063] The coupler 130 can be connected to the adjustment bar 124 at a generally central location extending between the first slide 126 and the second slide 128. The coupler 130 can be connected to the adjustment bar 124 through a fastener, an adhesive, or other known fastening techniques. The coupler 130 includes a coupler end 130A extending from the coupler 130. The coupler end 130A is the end of the coupler 130 that is not connected to the adjustment bar 124. The coupler end 130A extends from the coupler 130 in a direction away from the adjustment bar 124 and towards the base 104 or a supporting surface on which the bassinet 100 is supported when in an upright, in-use position. The coupler 130, specifically the coupler end 130A, is configured to latch onto the playard 150 when the bassinet 100 is connected to the playard 150, such that the coupler 130 prevents the bassinet 100 from releasing from the playard 150.
[0064] Referring to FIGS.2A-B and 3, the bassinet 100 can include softgoods 160 coupled to the frame 102 of the bassinet 100. The softgoods 160 can surround and cover all sides of the bassinet 100 besides the top or upper surface of the bassinet 100, allowing access to the child positioned within the bassinet 100. More 8548153.1specifically, the bassinet 100 can include softgoods 160 that cover the front side, rear side, left side, right side, and bottom side, with reference to the orientation illustrated in FIG. 2A. The softgoods 160 are configured to aid in keep a child securely and comfortably within the bassinet 100. The softgoods 160 can be constructed from a soft fabric, mesh, or other similar material that is comfortable to the touch of a child within the bassinet 100.
[0065] As illustrated in FIG.2B, in some examples, a pin 134 can be utilized to secure the adjustment bar 124 at a desired height position. The pin 134 can extend through and be secured within apertures in the corner supports 106 and the first slide 126 and the second slide 128, to prevent vertical translation of the adjustment bar 124 relative to the base 104 or corner supports 106. To alter the height of the adjustment bar 124, a user removes or releases the pins 134 from the apertures in the first and second slides 126, 128, the user translates the adjustment bar 124 to the desired position height, and the user inserts or allows the pins 134 back into the apertures in the first and second slides 126, 128 to secure and hold the adjustment bar 124 at the desired height.
[0066] In some examples, the pins 134 can be coupled to the corner supports 106 and the pins 134 can be spring biased to cause engagement with apertures within the first and second slides 126, 128. As will be appreciated by those having skill in the art, the pins 134 can be a pin, dowel, clevis pin, clip, latch, or other component capable of securing the height of the adjustment bar 124. The adjustment bar 124, the first slide 126, and the second slide 128 are configured to facilitate changing and securing the height of the coupler 130 relative to the base 104 of the bassinet 100, allowing the user to adjust a height of the base 104 of the bassinet 100 relative to the top rail of the playard 150, discussed below.
[0067] FIG. 3 illustrates a perspective end view of the bassinet 100 connected to a playard 150. As illustrated, when the bassinet 100 is coupled to the playard 150, the corner supports 106 of the bassinet 100 are positioned within a perimeter defined by the legs 152 of the playard 150, such that the bassinet 100 can translate vertically within an interior of the playard 150. As will be appreciated by those having skill in the art, the latch member 34 can be a pin, lock, dowel, extension, protrusion, clip, or other component capable of engaging the latch 36 and securing the height of the drop bar 24. The latch member 34 is a component that is configured to disengage from the latch 36, allowing the drop bar 24 to translate vertically (up / down). Further, it is to be understood that the positioning of the latch member 34 and the latch 36 could be switched, while maintaining the same functionality. Specifically, in some examples, the latch member 34 could be positioned on the drop bar supports 30A, 30B, and the latch 36 could be positioned on the drop bar slides 26A, 26B. The drop bar 24 is configured to transition between the first (top) position and the second (bottom) position independently of the height adjustable height adjustment mechanism 38, discussed further below.

A bassinet connectable to a playard, the bassinet comprising: a frame; a height adjustment mechanism connected to the frame, the height adjustment mechanism being connectable to the playard, and the height adjustment mechanism is height adjustable to adjust a height of the bassinet relative to a top rail of the playard.

The bassinet of claim 1, wherein the bassinet includes a first height adjustment mechanism connected to a first side of the frame, and a second height adjustment mechanism connected to a second side of the frame, the first side of the frame and the second side of the frame being opposite lateral sides of the frame.
3. The bassinet of claim 2, further comprising a drop bar transitionable between a top position and a bottom position relative to the frame of the bassinet, the drop bar is positioned on a third side of the frame, separate from the first side and the second side of the frame.
4. The bassinet of claim 3, wherein the drop bar is transitionable between the top position and the bottom position independently of the height adjustment mechanism.
5. The bassinet of claim 1, wherein the height adjustment mechanism includes: a first slide connected through an adjustment bar to a second slide, the first slide and the second slide each being translatably coupled to corner supports of the bassinet, with the first slide and the second slide being vertically translatable relative to the corner supports; and a coupler connected to the adjustment bar, wherein when the bassinet is connected to the playard, the coupler secures the bassinet to the playard. 8548153.

The bassinet of claim 1, wherein the height adjustment mechanism includes: a first mount height adjustably coupled to a first corner bar of the frame, wherein when the bassinet is connected to the playard, a mount face of the first mount contacts the playard and supports the bassinet relative to the playard; and a second mount height adjustably coupled to a second corner bar of the frame, wherein when the bassinet is connected to the playard, a mount face of the second mount contacts the playard and supports the bassinet relative to the playard.
7. The bassinet of claim 6, wherein: the first mount further includes a stop extending from a side of the first mount, wherein the stop contacts a protrusion of the first corner bar to fix a height of the first mount relative to the first corner bar; and the second mount further includes a stop extending from a side of the second mount, wherein the stop contacts a protrusion of the second corner bar to fix a height of the second mount relative to the second corner bar.
8. An assembly for holding a child, the assembly comprising: a bassinet removably connected to a playard; the bassinet comprising: a frame; a height adjustment mechanism connected to the frame, the height adjustment mechanism being connectable to the playard, and the height adjustment mechanism is height adjustable to adjust a height of the bassinet relative to a top rail of the playard; and the playard comprising: a plurality of legs with a height adjustable foot coupled to each of the plurality of legs, each height adjustable foot being transitionable between a first position and a second position, when in the first position the playard 8548153.1stands at a first height, and when in the second position the playard stands at a second height that is less than the first height.
9. The assembly of claim 8, wherein the bassinet further comprises a drop bar transitionable between a top position and a bottom position relative to the frame of the bassinet.
10. The assembly of claim 9, wherein the drop bar is vertically level or aligned with a rear bar of the frame in the top position, and the drop bar is positioned vertically lower than the rear bar and closer to a base of the bassinet in the bottom position.
11. The assembly of claim 9, wherein the drop bar is vertically translatable within a channel of a corner support of the bassinet.
12. The assembly of claim 9, wherein the drop bar is vertically translatable within a channel of a drop bar support of the bassinet, the drop bar support being separate from a corner bar of the bassinet.
13. The assembly of claim 9, wherein the drop bar includes a latch and a latch member for securing the drop bar in the top position.
14. The assembly of claim 8, wherein the bassinet includes a softgoods coupled to the frame of the bassinet, and wherein the playard includes a softgoods coupled to a playard frame of the playard.
15. An assembly for holding a child, the assembly comprising: a bassinet removably connected to a playard, the playard comprising: a playard frame including a plurality of legs; a foot coupled to a lower end of each of the plurality of legs; and 8548153.1an extension coupled to each foot of the playard, wherein each extension extends from the foot in a direction towards a support surface in which the playard stands when in use; wherein the playard is transitionable between a first position and a second position, when in the first position the playard stands at a first height, and when in the second position the playard stands at a second height that is less than the first height.
16. The assembly of claim 15, wherein the extension coupled to each foot is removably coupled to each foot, when the extension is coupled to each foot the playard stands at the first height, and when the extension is removed from each foot the playard stands at the second height.
17. The assembly of claim 15, wherein the extensions are swivel extensions rotatably coupled to each foot, when the swivel extensions are rotated into an extended position the playard stands at the first height, and when the swivel extension are rotated into a folded position the playard stands at the second height.
18. The assembly of claim 15, wherein the playard frame further includes a plurality of center supports and a center foot coupled to each of the plurality of center supports, wherein a central extension is coupled to each center foot of the playard and each central extension extends from the center foot in the direction towards the support surface in which the playard stands when in use.
19. The assembly of claim 18, wherein the central extension is removably coupled or rotatably coupled to each foot of the playard to transition between the first height and the second height.
20. The assembly of claim 15, wherein the first height and the second height are a vertical distance measured from the support surface to a top rail of the playard. 8548153.

A method of adjusting a height of a base of a bassinet relative to a support surface upon which a playard is supported, the method comprising: removably connecting the bassinet to the playard; and raising or lowering the bassinet relative to the support surface by: transitioning an extension coupled to a foot of the playard between a first position and a second position, when in the first position the playard stands at a first height, and when in the second position the playard stands at a second height that is less than the first height; or adjusting a height adjustment mechanism connected to a frame of the bassinet, the height adjustment mechanism being connectable to the playard, and the height adjustment mechanism is height adjustable to adjust a height of the bassinet relative to a top rail of the playard. 8548153.1
